Native varieties are seldom seen except alongside creeks and rivers and in marshes, or many humid areas and are mostly deciduous in the C5:@1> 9-75:3 5@ 1B1: 9;>1 05ő/A8@ @; >1/;3:5F1 them. Typically Azaleas bloom in the springtime from April to May, but several bloom as late as August and September, with the blooms lasting as long as two weeks or so. In the Deep South some azalea varieties bloom again in the fall. This trait of re-blooming is being bred into several hybrids as well as traits for multi-colored blooms, larger blooms, and blooming at various times of the year other than the springtime.

Many of the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese varieties are now being crossed with Native Azalea varieties to produce hybrids that are disease resistant, have tougher cold-hardiness, and other advantageous characteristics. Both Native and Oriental Azaleas come in various sizes from two foot tall to twenty foot in some native varieties, and from small petite leaves to much larger ones.

has produced over 10,000 registered plants. Hybrids are usually produced from seed and are not usually true to the parent plant, whereas cuttings are true (clones) to the characteristics of the parent. Interestingly the non-native Azaleas have many shades of white, pink, reddish-orange, and purple, but not yellow. Only Native Azaleas and its hybrids have blooms with the color yellow. The blooms themselves come in various shapes and sizes…from large 3 inch single blooms, to small cluster blooms, to strap-like petal blooms.

Reminisces of an Azalea lover

rappie (white perch as the locals like to call them) is the second 9;?@ <;<A8-> Å&#x2039;?41>E ;: .;@4 %-9 Rayburn and Toledo Bend (by far, .8-/7 .-?? 5? @41 9;?@ <;<A8-> Å&#x2039;?41>EJ Generally anywhere from about 10 to VT <1>/1:@ ;2 -88 Å&#x2039;?45:3 1Å&#x160;;>@ -@ @41?1 two lakes is devoted to crappie, and we 31@ - 8;@ ;2 /-88? /;:/1>:5:3 @41?1 Å&#x2039;?4 As you might expect, when everything is going great you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hear much but C41: @41 Å&#x2039;?45:3 5? <;;> @41 <4;:1 rings. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the huge swings in population numbers we observe from one year to the next. Note that we have @C; 05Å&#x160;1>1:@ ?1@? ;2 >13A8-@5;:? 2;> crappie for Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Toledo Bend is a border lake that we share with Louisiana whose statewide >13A8-@5;:? 05Å&#x160;1> 2>;9 &1D-? %; -? - compromise between the two states, the Toledo Bend crappie regulations are a no-minimum size limit with a 25 Å&#x2039;?4 0-58E .-3 8595@

;?@ 4->0 /;>1 />-<<51 Å&#x2039;?41>91: /-: @188 E;A @4-@ Å&#x2039;?45:3 ?A//1?? /-: .1 0>-?@5/-88E 05Å&#x160;1>1:@ 2>;9 ;:1 E1-> @; the next. Fluctuations in population sizes for just about any species are common. Unfortunately, in the case of crappie it can be more noticeable and pronounced. There are several rea?;:? 2;> @45? C45/4 5:/8A01? 4534 1Å&#x160;;>@ and harvest, survival, and spawning success. Survival is by far the driving

Male Black Crappie force in our area of the country. We are lucky in regards to how fast crappie grow and reach spawning size given our climate. However, our climate can be somewhat unpredictable in the spring when the year class strength of crappie is determined.

Crappie is more of a cool water species especially in regards to spawning. The crappie spawn usually begins when water temperatures approach 60o and will continue until water temperatures begin to exceed 75o, usually early March to late April. The general rule of thumb is that earlier spawned Å&#x2039;?4 ->1 9;>1 ?A//1??2A8 5: @415> Å&#x2039;>?@ year of life simply due to the fact they had longer to grow leading up to winter which is the season that yields the highest mortality.

Crappie seems to be the outlier to this rule. Studies have found that early spawned crappie often have slower growth and higher mortality rates @4-: @4;?1 Å&#x2039;?4 @4-@ C1>1 ?<-C:10 -:0 hatched later in the spring. Reasoning 5? @4-@ @41 8-@1> ?<-C:10 Å&#x2039;?4 ->1 .;>: into a more stable environment. An especially hard spring with multiple cold fronts and one that fails to warm up until the tail end of the season can 0>-?@5/-88E -Å&#x160;1/@ - E1-> /8-?? 5: - :13-See Crappie, page 7

a senior writer for Bassmaster for more than 40 years. A popular host of the In-Fisherman radio shows, he authored six books and more than 3,000 magazine articles in his career.
