W

e sometimes ask ourselves here at Wyoming Magazine, “Why in a 21st century, internet-loving, social media-addicted society, hungry for nothing more than clickbait headlines and shallow content made up of false glimmers of inspiration and empty promises of prosperity and free tacos, would we continue to publish a print publication in the least populated state in the union?”

Published July 1, 2017 Wyoming Magazine is a publication aimed at showcasing the best (and most obscure) people, places, and events in this great square state we call home. Our team is full of people who are passionate about the lifestyle and personality of Wyoming, and with this magazine we do our best to share

Well … in short, because we do things a little differently in Wyoming.

Here in the Equality State, we've embraced modernity, but not at the expense of tradition. The culture of our home is unique in its embrace of the new world, and its reverence for the old. We have one of the highest museum-to-population ratios in the union, and we also have a few Tesla charging stations—talk about a dichotomy. We tackle pertinent issues—like how we can consider ourselves the rarest of Americans, whether or not we believe the super volcano in Yellowstone is something we should concern ourselves with, or what it’ll take to completely “unplug” ourselves this summer—but also to make a solid attempt to capture the spirit of Wyoming that drives local artisans and businessmen alike.

All of this is to say that we still take the time to enjoy some of the finer things in life—though we're not blind to the changing times, nor do they do much to overwhelm us. Of course, none of this is meant to disparage other forms of media. We ourselves have a presence online, one that we're proud of (follow us on Instagram, Facebook—we're a social bunch), but there's a palpable difference in flipping through the pages of a solid, physical magazine as opposed to clicking through one online. That said, our constituency is one to which we're loyal and eternally grateful.

Oftentimes, a writer will begin an article by introducing a concept softly, stating facts and/or examples that support his or her position on the aforementioned concept and then finish with a strong statement or claim on that position.

Well, in classic Wyoming fashion, I’m just gonna throw the status quo by the wayside and start with my strong statement. wyomingites (people from, or residents of, wyoming)

are the rarest americans.

’ll give you a moment to gather yourself after such a powerful claim ... (moment to gather yourself) ... good?

Good. now, you might ask what I mean when I say “rare,” and to be honest I hadn’t considered that the word was a homonym and had multiple definitions prior to this point in time. I mean all of the above definitions, or in the case, all of the below. Here are the definitions for “rare,” as told to us by the universally−accepted authority on all things worldly: Google.

rare1 | rer | adjective: rare; comparative adjective: rarer; superlative adjective: rarest

1. (of an event, situation, or condition) not occurring very often. “a rare genetic disorder” synonyms: infrequent, scarce, sparse, few and far between, thin on the ground, like gold dust, as scarce as hen’s teeth; More antonyms: common, frequent (of a thing) not found in large numbers and consequently of interest or value. “the jellyfish tree, one of the rarest plants on earth” synonyms: unusual, recherché, uncommon, unfamiliar, atypical, singular “rare stamps” antonyms: ordinary, common place or unusually good or remarkable. “he plays with rare strength and sensitivity”

Let’s take this first pitch and do as would the Great Bambino, the Sultan of Swat, the Colossus of Clout. That's right, we're gonna call our home run and knock it out of the park just for style points. Batter up.

Definition one: rer/ adjective: (of an event, situation, or condition) not occurring very often. it’s safe to say that as a state of the American union, we can start out, at the very least, tied with the other territories that have become American states. However, just as Greco−Roman wrestler and member of the society of rarest Americans himself, Rulon Gardner stated in the 2000 summer Olympics, we’ll take gold on this one. proof one: How often are you out exploring and run into steaming geysers, hot springs and colorful beds of water heated by WYOMING MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2017

Mother Earth to the ripe ol’ temp of 160° Fahrenheit? Well, the answer is once. And it happened, right here in Wyoming.

John Colter, good find, ol’ chap. one of the earliest explorers of Wyoming was John Colter in 1807. While exploring the Rocky Mountains, he discovered a region of steaming geysers and towering water falls so unusual that his written reports nicknamed the area “Colter’s Hell.” The same area, in 1872, was set aside forever as a place to be enjoyed by everyone. It became known as Yellowstone, the world’s first national park. (www.wyo.gov) proof two: Our first proof heated up our second proof. Not that our second proof needs any extra heat, but that’s beside the point. You can count on one finger how many states are home to not only the first ever national park (did we mention that Yellowstone is the first national park? It is. #boomstillgotit) Wyoming is also home to our country’s first national monument, Devil’s Tower. Did you count how many states can say that about their land? Do it now ... that one finger you’re holding up? That’s for us, for Wyoming. Hold it proudly. Number one, baby. #RarestAmerican the first definition was “not occurring very often.”

It’s safe to say those are some big occurrences, and they’ve happened only once in the history of history. In Wyoming.

Boom.

Definition two: rer/ adjective: (of a thing) not found in large numbers and consequently of interest or value. "the jellyfish tree, one of the rarest plants on earth" proof one: There is no argument against Wyomingites as the rarest American just by the very nature of this definition ... We do study the subject at our state’s university— that’s right, Wyoming has one university, so toss that in the bucket as another state rarity and another “W” for UW—but math isn’t necessarily our strong suit. Luckily, you don’t have to be Isaac Friggin’ Newton to understand the rarest American by the numbers. Ladies and gents, I present you ... the numbers:

here’s what you’re seeing: Wyoming is sitting pretty in 51st place for population by state at 582,658 of rare ‘mericans, give ‘er take. Followed by Vermont, then D.C., and then our good friends up der in ol’ Nor’ Dak−oh−tah, don’cha know.

We checked these figures with our friends, the gub’ment (census.gov) as well as, perhaps a more trustworthy source, Wikipedia, and the story checks out. The only flaw we found in the numbers was that Wyoming was listed as 51st. That figure should be changed to numero uno, amigos. We are number one. Wyoming accounts for approximately one−fifth of one percentage point of our nation’s population, making us officially ... the rarest Americans. #Boom Definition three: rer/ adjective: unusually good or remarkable. “he plays with rare strength and sensitivity”. uhhhhh... if you need proof of this one, let us just invite you to visit the greatest state in the union, and experience the rare American individual that inhabits our lands. Please, come see us. We play hard ball with visitors, until you actually visit, and then you’ll leave with an unusually good and remarkable experience. Let us know when you’re coming, and we’ll point you in the right direction. But heck, here are a few things you can look forward to enjoying and remarking about on your visit. (Tag us on IG, @WyomingMagazine) proof one: Zero traffic. “I can leave the house three minutes after I was supposed to be at work and STILL get there on time,” Lauren Perry, Thought Catalog. proof two: Wide open spaces. “Montana is a sneaky bastard because they must have paid someone to get the name Big Sky State.

That belongs to Wyoming. You’ve never seen a horizon so big.” (Also Lauren from Thought Catalog. We like her. She gets it.) proof three: Wyomingites are America’s most likely recipients of a rescue mission manned by Han Solo himself. Harrison Ford has used his helicopter (aka Millennium Falcon, duh) in multiple search and rescue missions, in one case picking up a stranded climber in the Teton Range and returning her to safety.

proof four: “Usually, people who move here trying to change things get booted by the locals. Which is amazing and maintains our Western traditions.”

Well here’s the meat of this one. If Wyomingites are the rarest Americans, Democratic Wyomingites are the rarest of the rare Americans. We try not to get too political, but for the sake of proving ourselves rare, and red being part of that definition, we’re gonna play the cards we’ve got on this one.

Wherever you stand on the politico−sphere, it’s easy to see that Wyoming is certainly “red on the inside.” Shout out to our homies in Teton County ... hashtag diversity. We also have our own beef council, and when you visit a steakhouse in our fine state, and use the word “well” in reference to anything other than ordering a drink, they’ll probably think you’re speaking French. Please, no jazz on the jukebox, Jean Girard.

So let’s recap.

First national monument, first national park, first state to give women the right to vote, first state to provide a first place in wrestling at the Olympics (shoutout Afton, Wyoming—ya done us proud!) and first place as the least populated state in the union.

Did we mention we have two escalators? We do, and we had to throw it in somewhere. That fact might as well grace our summation.

Speaking of summation, here’s ours: Our state is rare, our state of mind is rare, and our state of being is one that boasts the title without credible opposition. Our people are the rarest. We are Wyomingites, and if you are too, then share this article with a friend and claim it proudly. You are ‥. The Rarest American.

A

uthor kurt vonnegut says, “True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country”. I think there’s probably some truth to that. It’s fascinating to see the people I grew up with graduating and moving on to bigger and better things. Even though I think every generation has a little fear for the future, I feel confident that the students who have come out of Wyoming are some of the best prepared to face the uncertainty of the days to come. I say this having gone through the Wyoming K−12 school system, and having graduated from the University of Wyoming in May. wyoming sets up its students for success.

And, though there’s always room for improvement, the education system in the state has received many awards.

This past year alone, three Wyoming schools became United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools, and Sheridan High School was listed as one of the nation’s Most Challenging Schools by The Washington Post. Jeff Mowry, assistant principal at SHS and Wyoming’s native son, highlighted the success of Sheridan County School District #2 and the larger education world of the state.

The success of Wyoming’s schools hinges on supportive and innovative teachers—a fact obviously not lost on Mowry, or the students of the state. Joe Melia, a graduating senior from Cheyenne Central High School, said his teachers were very important to him over the years. “teachers in wyoming have a sincerity that makes you want to do well. Most of my teachers are from Wyoming.

Many went to Central. When they are from Wyoming, they understand Wyoming kids and give them opportunities,” Melia said.

these opportunities pay off as Mowry notes about SCSD#2. “I believe if you set high expectations, people will strive to meet those expectations.

The students of SCSD#2 are not any different than everyone else. They strive to meet the expectations set before them,” Mowry said. “In my opinion, our students handle these high expectations well and meet or exceed them year in and year out.” teachers’ high expectations and their desire to know and love their students and their state proves contagious. estela torres, a University of Wyoming music education and Spanish student from Gillette, typifies the pull that many Wyoming students feel to continue their education and later life in−state. Like many others, she turns to the idea of community to explain it.

this experience helps prepare students for the real world and prepares them to explore the world outside Wyoming as well as in it. Melia struggled with his decision to leave the state for college, but he’s excited for the opportunity to try something new. He will run track while studying business management at Black Hills State University. torres’ need for community is a beautiful testament to how education works in Wyoming, just as Melia experienced it and as Mowry has cultivated it. Mowry has worked in Wyoming for 12 years, and reflected on what brought him back from Colorado to teach, eventually what got him into administration.

“i want to stay in Wyoming once I graduate because I like the sense of community the state has to offer. When you’re in a small town, the school is definitely a focal point of the town and a music program can be integral,” she explained. “Right now, Gillette would be the ideal place to get my first job.

This is where my family lives and it would be really excellent to go back home after five years of school.” her ambition embodies what Melia appreciated in his teachers, who have seen the world, but came back to teach in Wyoming. “in wyoming, teachers know the kids, and the students can get life experience and knowledge by getting to know them,” Melia said. “The relationship goes beyond the classroom. Students can experience the world through them.”

“my main reason for moving back was to be closer to family. Once I moved back, I noticed some big differences between teaching in Colorado versus Wyoming. Wyoming’s educational system is in much better shape than Colorado’s, and I feel very fortunate to live and work in a state that graciously supports K−12 education,” Mowry said.

“All the opportunities Central offers—AP classes, its music department, sports—you don’t get that at Oakland High School,” he joked. melia reflected on these opportunities, thanking his choir teacher, David Hurst, and thinking of how his track coaches always pushed him forward. torres had similar thoughts on being pushed to succeed. “Overall, diversity of options is really important because every kid is going to have a different niche. One day, there could come a time when one kid doesn’t feel like they have a reason to stay in school except for that one class, and it’s important that the one class exists,” she said. Wyoming often does a good job of offering its students that one class, that one opportunity.

as the summer winds down and Wyoming students return to school, Melia offered his advice, and it’ll only help when Wyoming students head out to run the world. “it honestly flies by. That sounds so cliché .‥ but don’t try to think so much about the future. Live in the moment.

Counting down to graduation for three years is not to your advantage. Just enjoy all the opportunities high school offers you.” i don’t fear the day when my graduating class runs the country, because we are coming out of Wyoming schools.

I know we’ll be alright.

ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY BRADY MCLEAN if you live in wyoming, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, you’ve probably heard of the sturgis motorcycle rally. for one week in august, half a million strong gather to celebrate their freedom of expression through motorcycle runs, test rides, live music and eclectic entertainment ... what you may not have heard of, though, is a pig− roasting, live−music−boasting, harley− coasting wyoming tradition just over the south dakota border called .‥

that changes today. If you haven’t heard of the Ham & Jam before today, we are proud to be the first to tell you about this Wyoming−hosted event during Sturgis. If you like wild times, free food and live music, you’re going to have a good time. over the years, the Wednesday of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has come to be known as “Wyoming Wednesday,” a great reason to escape the hustle, bustle and muscle shirts that downtown Sturgis keeps aplenty. that wednesday, thousands of riders load up on their Great American freedom machines, “pack up the babies and grab the ol’ ladies, ‘cause everyone knows” and everyone goes to the Hulett Ham & Jam. (Sorry, Neil Diamond, we butchered “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show,” but we’re sure our readers will have it in their heads for at least 20 minutes after reading this article.) if you’ve been before, we hope to teach you something new about the event. If you haven’t been, pay close attention, because we’re going to do our best to take you there in your head. If ye be brave, we will give you an idea of how to do “Wyoming Wednesday” during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. the first thing you must know about the Ham & Jam is that you’re going to want to show up early. We’re going to assume you’re headed there from Sturgis, for the sake of having a reference (and hey, why not check out Sturgis beforehand?). Your ride is going to be about 53 miles headed out from the rally, and it can get hot. The last thing you want to do is get there at peak time.

Given that the event boasts free food in the middle of a week where many a folk tend to spend way too much money,

suffice it to say that it gets popular. You don’t want to be stuck two miles out of town sitting and waiting in a sea full of motorcycles that put out quite a bit of their own heat. Get there early! when you do get into town, if you’re on a motorcycle, there should be a good amount of parking on Hulett’s Main Street. The town closes the road to vehicle traffic and only motorcycles are allowed in. But remember where you parked!

Once you fill yourself with the delicious wares of the town and the vendors at the ham and jam, unnecessary walking in the heat will make you feel like YOU’RE the pig getting roasted. There will be a lot of motorcycles in a very long row, and it’s easy to lose one. If you’re riding with people, try your best to park together.

Odds are you’ll be headed for Devil’s Tower after lunch, and you don’t want to waste an hour of your day trying to find Allan because he parked his sportster closer to the action. Park together. Even you, Allan. next up is lunch! We know you’re hungry, but take the scenic route (as long as you show up early) and check out the vendors, the people, and feel the vibe of Hulett. Some old timers and Sturgis veterans prefer Hulett. They say it feels more like the Sturgis of ol’, before corporate sponsors and big money got involved. We can only speculate, as we sure weren’t at Sturgis 20 or 30 years ago, but that’s what we hear.

Either way, walk along Main Street and take it all in. Heck, we’d love to hear about it! Tag us in your recollects or live posts if you decide to attend! now, back to the food. The Hulett Chamber of Commerce hosts a free lunch, complete with delicious pulled pork sandwiches and a few other tasty

sides. Get in line in plenty of time. We’ve never heard of them running out, so at your convenience, load up, eat up, smile and be glad you’re in Wyoming! now that you’ve hammed, it’s time to complete event’s moniker. We’re not talking about Smuckers, or the delicious stuff your grandma used to make (but if she still does, we’ll give you an address and take a case). We’re talking about that old time rock and roll, the type of music that just soothes your soul. (Alright, alright, I’ll stop.) hulett hosts live music next door to the makeshift outdoor mess hall. Grab your lady, and do−si−do! It’s a good time to burn off lunch before you head out on the road to enjoy the gorgeous scenery. (It’s actually hard to avoid gorgeous vistas in the area. There’s a reason folks started riding their motorcycles here all those years ago.) if you don’t have a dance partner, you’re in luck.

There will more than likely be several others looking for a dance partner. Find ‘em and cut a little rug before you burn a little rubber. burn rubber? That’s right, tradition is to head over to Sundance after the Ham & Jam for the burnout contest.

If you’re unfamiliar with what a burnout is—well, we encourage you to attend. It’s an expression reserved for a special few who feel the urge to cause controlled damage to their motorcycle tires, just to feel the thrill of breaking the rules (or, at least, what it would feel like to break the rules if you were on the street in Sundance that day only, the town reserves a spot to enjoy burning that rubber legally. Hooray!) there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. The adage goes, “There is no such thing as a free lunch,” and we aren’t here to argue with that. But on Wyoming Wednesday in Hulett during the Sturgis Motorcycle rally, the lunch is about as close to free as it can be. For that one Wednesday in August, in one small town in Wyoming, there’s a free sandwich with your name on it. Go forth and get it. Tag us in your adventures.

e exist in a strange reality, dear readers. Have you ever thought about the fact that we live in the future? And the past. And the present. We live in a seamless continuity that, at all times, is, isn’t and might be. if you’re ever feeling existential, think about how you are one tiny ball of carbon sitting on a giant, water-covered rock dancing around an inconceivably large ball of fire, and the entire little group is hurling through space (which is a thing purely because it isn’t) that’s always expanding. the beefalo is the dr. moreau-esque hybrid of the domestic cow and the American bison. Long ago, Native Americans and non-native plainsmen alike took the measure of two proud, distinct beasts. They first looked at the bison, then they looked at the cow. Then they looked back at the bison, and then the cow again. Then back to the bison. And then, they sat back on their old-timey heels and thought, “Man, I sure wish I could mold these two together like some kind of biological Play-Doh.” what’s that? They didn’t have Play-Doh back then? Well, they thought of whatever people played with back then. Clay, maybe. Or did they even have recreation back in the day?

Was it just sadness and grit all the time?

anyhow, years later science caught up and gave us the miracle of the American beefalo, a title we think would also work well for a cattle-themed professional wrestler. cross-breeding between the two first happened accidentally as long ago as the 1740s in colonial North America. We like to imagine a simple farmer, with his bucklehat and his casual racism, walking outside and seeing some ungodly hybrid suckling at this teat or that. Then, he probably burned it or crushed it with rocks, because that’s what people did back then with things they didn’t understand. The beefalo does look just like someone spliced the head of a cow onto the giant body of a buffalo. It’s just as likely that the beefalo is so-called not because of its parentage but because of its bulky-ass body, which kinda looks like a dryer bag stuffed with bowling balls. the beefalo, pinnacle of modern biological engineering

milk producer than its pure-bred counterparts, and also had a more docile disposition. The meat is not only delicious, but lower in cholesterol and fat. Combine that with a considerably lower price tag per animal, and you’ve got yourself an animal with diverse accolades. did people in the ‘50s, with their retro-futuristic vision and their long, skinny cigarettes, envision the future as we live it today? Would they have guessed the ubiquitousness of the smartphone or those toasters that burn images on your toast?

Would they have conceived of such a mythical creature as the wily beefalo? Probably, but maybe not. it just goes to show: The future is totally unguessable, and we should all just get a beefalo burger and stop thinking about it.

Here’s the thing. From 2004 to 2008, Yellowstone—the whole place—rose a foot. Scientists are freaking about it.

IT’S A FREAKING FOOT. have these so−called “geologists” even heard of Gannett Peak?

The Grand Teton? Cloud Peak? yellowstone national park sits at roughly 8,000 feet, including that extra foot it grew. Gannett, Teton, and Cloud tower above that by an average of around 5,000 feet. That’s something like 162 percent the height of Yellowstone, on average.

I’m not at all sure why someone who went to some fancy school and got some fancy degree, and they’re now called “Dr.,” even though they can’t tell me if this thing on my leg is benign or not, can call this thing—a Park for cryin’ out loud—a supervolcano, just because it has a bunch of hot springs and little magma pocket things. the other “evidence” that people are using to try and disgrace the beauty that surrounds the Old Faithful Gift Shop and those deliciously protected buffalo are earthquakes. since when does an earthquake indicate volcanic activity? Some of the most recent sizable earthquakes in the United States have been in Oklahoma. Recent, that is, as of May. There are no volcanoes there. Just ask Wikipedia. There’s no correlation. It’s a coincidence. It’s gotta be. now that I think about it, how are we supposed to know that the government isn’t making this stuff up to scare us into paying more taxes, huh? It’s a ploy, a scam, and I’d bet money that Russia’s involved.

beyond the probability that this evidence isn’t even valid (where’s the proof?), why would anyone want to believe that Yellowstone poses a threat? Have you ever even been there? It’s awesome. It has everything! Rivers, deer, bears, grasses, magma craters, trees, and a few wolves, if those things are still even around. It’s the land of plenty, where anyone can go to immerse themselves in the outdoors. Take a breath of fresh air and be one with nature. Anything goes, except for anything that could be destructive to the park. Oh, and don’t try to put any buffalo in your car. No good will come of that.

why does that matter?

yellowstone national park was created in 1872. Originally, this explorer dude named Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden tried to go to Yellowstone from the East when the West was still virtually uncharted. He wanted to, well, chart the place. He’d heard about some cool geysers, bears and a cool hotel—or something like that.

what these scientists are suggesting with their ground risings and volcanic earthquakes is that Mr. President General Ulysses S. Grant was one of two things. Either he was an idiot, or a sadist with contempt for future Wyomingites.

the first try didn’t really work out.

well, mr. grant—excuse me, President Grant— excuse me again, President General Mr. Grant, was the commander of the Union Army in the Civil War. This man was a strategist and a master of the battlefield. Did he have some close calls, some missteps? Sure he did.

But he won. He was a winner, dammit. Not only that, but he was a faithful patriot. He believed in the strength of the Union, of our United States of America, as did his friend and commander−in−chief, Abraham Lincoln.

if you’re suggesting that Yellowstone is dangerous, perhaps you hate Ulysses S. Grant, and Abraham Lincoln, and even Wyoming. Or are you just jealous because you’re not on any money?

We live in an ephemeral world, my friends. Nothing in this cruel life is assured, and more than likely we'll all die well before we think we will. we’re not here to discuss the ultimate, unfortunate nihilistic truths that govern our world and crush our spirits. No that’s not why we’re here. We wouldn’t go on and on about how the only things that seperate us from the animal world is our own antiquated sense of purpose and morality, and that at the end, human bones blanch in the uncaring desert sun the same as any other animal. No, we wouldn’t do that.

Because that would be depressing. on the subject of something only slightly less depressing, we have the Yellowstone Supervolcano, a cauldron of nonsense and geological hatred bubbling in the northwestern corner of our fair state. We face a lot of existential threats to our safety nowadays: terrorism, climate change, weaponized tarantulas. Yet, in this humble writer’s opinion, there is no greater imminent death threat than Yellowstone itself. The entirety of the national park is essentially some cool geysers and a bunch of wolves sitting on top of large pockets of magma. The hot springs and seismic activity in Yellowstone are fueled by the churning mass of red− hot death desperately trying to find its way out of the ground. Recently, there has been a marked uptick in tectonic buggery in and around Yellowstone, news that has understandably rattled a few nerves.

the earth was last rocked with an eruption from the caldera more than 70,000 years ago, which may seem comforting at first, but that means we are well overdue for one.

Do you know what would happen if Yellowstone erupted? 87,000 people would die outright.

The lava would destroy everything in its path, and the eruption would essentially rain down natural artillery on our unforunate heads. That’s nothing compared to the pyroclastic flow. Gas hot enough to insantly evaporate all of the water from a human body (see Pompeii) and tephra, fragmented rock material, gathers in a cloud of destruction that can travel for miles and travel at hundreds of miles per hour. Toxic ash would rain from the sky, and two−thirds of the United States would be rendered instantly uninhabitable, say nothing of Canada. poor, poor canada. The blast would belch so much sulfur dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere that the resulting climate cool could last up to 10 years. This would affect rainfall patterns, atmospheric oxygen content, and would cause frosts so severe that crop loss and mass famine would be the only menu options. the unfortnuate reality of the Yellowstone Caldera is no Russian conspiracy, my friends.

Unlike geopolitical or other climate−based apocalypse scenarios, there’s not a single thing we can do about it. You can pray, you can hide, you can make blood sacrifices, but when that lid blows, we’re all going down.

Shaped roughly like a camping pan with a serious handle to dissuade the occasional bear in the middle of the night, Fremont County is a conglomeration of high desert plains, sweeping valleys, and a series of renowned canyons that wind their way through the southern part of the county. much like the diverse topography found within its lines, Fremont County also features a wide array of opportunities that offer something for just about anyone—and if you can’t seem to find a single thing to enjoy doing in county 10, you probably aren’t trying hard enough. because of its rich history of “come and gone” economies like fur trading, uranium and gold mining, and other boom and bust industries, Fremont County is home to a number of modern day, thriving communities. It's also a wealth of historical treasures like deserted mining towns and camps, rendezvous sites, ranches, and more locations that were frequent stops along the routes for early American

homesteaders. thousands of years of expansive Native American historical influence, the peak of the fur trading era, early homesteading efforts, and the discovery of South Pass (which proves that Wyoming played a crucial part in geographically shaping what America looks like today—you’re welcome) all contributed to the establishment of Fremont County and what it’s most known for today. But what is it known for, exactly?

What is there to do in this camp−pan− shaped, topographically confused west− central county? to begin, one must bear in mind not only the diversity of Fremont County’s landscape, but also its visiting audiences— what do you look for in your pursuit of Wyoming adventure, dear reader? Do you chase the 307’s best 5K and half−marathon routes, or would you rather get your steps in while you pursue a trophy bighorn sheep?

We’ve outlined some of the best aspects of Fremont County, its lesser−known historical gems, and what you should look forward to if you ever find yourself on the right parts of US Highways 26, 20, or 287:

IF YOU THINK YOU’RE LUCKY: wyoming may not have the lights, the excitement, or the shows of the Las Vegas Strip—but that also means we don’t have the lines of people, the bad moving billboard advertisements, or the weirdly up−close−and−personal guys who dress up like Abraham Lincoln and Jack Sparrow (at least most days, anyway). what we do have, however, are beautiful night skies, scenic byways, and four Vegas− style casinos along the Wind River Indian

Reservation. If you’re feeling particularly lucky during your time in county 10, pull into one (or all—depending on the amount of luck you seem to think you possess) of its four casinos and casino hotels in Riverton, Ethete, and Lander.

IF YOU LIKE TO ESCAPE FROM OTHER HUMAN BEINGS: trying to get away from it all (or them all)? Don’t worry—for those of us who feel that even 587,000 people spanning the 98,000 miles of Wyoming territory is a bit crowded at times, there are plenty of opportunities to be truly alone in Fremont County. for starters, if you happen to be traveling by way of Dubois, take a day or two and explore the volcanic lava− formed Absaroka mountain range. If you’re looking to stay overnight, choose to pitch a tent or stay at one of the area’s many dude and guest ranches. looking to camp? Try some of these top camping areas for both RV and tent sites as suggested by “Wyoming’s Wind River Country:” Togwotee Pass, Boysen State Park, Sinks Canyon, The Loop Road, or Double Cabin Campground.

Take a hike (we’re not being rude) and hit up one of the numerous trail systems found in Fremont County’s Wind River and Absaroka Mountains—including Lake Louise outside of Dubois and Christina Lake from Lander. the popo agie, Sweetwater, and Wind rivers, as well as their tributaries, are the most significant waterways in Fremont County. Try your hand (and rod) at some of the best fishing in Wyoming, with over 43,000 acres of water and another 2,000 miles of pure, snowmelt− fed streams.

if you or one of your traveling companions has mobility restrictions, or you’d simply prefer to stay behind the wheel on your county 10 adventure, there are numerous driving tours that “Wyoming’s Wind River Country” has outlined—visit windriver.org for more information.

IF YOU LIKE GHOST TOWNS & GOLD MINES: it may not have panned out for everyone, but many of Fremont County’s towns and camps were established because of the inescapable allure of gold and other natural resources during the 1800s and early 1900s. Each summer, South Pass City holds its “Gold Rush Days,” where visitors can pan for gold, watch a vintage baseball tournament and printing press demonstrations, and more. fremont county is also home to a number of ghost towns.

Some still maintain a small number of residents and others have been entirely abandoned, leaving behind untouched scenes from everyday life like cups and plates on the table just as they had been left after the residents’ last meal. Check out Atlantic City, Bonneville, Jeffrey City, and Miner’s Delight, to name just a few. have you inherited your uncle’s role as the family history buff? Fremont County Museums provide a plethora of countywide historical information and beyond.

These museums reside in Dubois, Lander, and Riverton, and all three and their hours of operation can be found at fremountcountymuseums.com. A historic walking tour is available in all three communities, as well as numerous programs for both children and adult visitors to learn more about Fremont County’s cultural heritage and historical significance. the “1838 rendezvous” is an annual event that takes place in Riverton along the banks of the Wind River, where vendors, craftsmen and women, and traders gather to commemorate the “men, women, and children who moved so lightly upon the world that only the land and the river remain a witness...”—these being the numerous “mountain men” who traversed the western mountain landscape. IF YOU'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU SHOULD BE A COWBOY: for years, the Wind River mountains and the surrounding lands have been a source of adventure—for both those looking for it and those who just “happened” upon it. Fremont County has historically been a frequent stop for those moving westward as well as a destination for numerous dude ranches, cattle and sheep operations, and rodeos. for a taste of cowboy living, Fremont County offers experiences for those of us who are well−versed in the western way of life, as well as those who are less familiar with the Wyoming lifestyle. A number of dude ranches are available for daily and longer−term excursions, and boast knowledgeable staff, fun for your entire family, and an adventure into some of Wyoming’s most stunning backcountry. if you’re looking for more of a sidelines kind of view, check out one of Fremont County’s numerous rodeos every year. The rodeos happen from June through September in Crowheart, Dubois, Fort Washakie, Lander, Pavillion, Riverton, and Shoshoni. Lander Pioneer Days Rodeo is the oldest paid rodeo in the world— it’s taken place each year in July for over 110 years.

For the biking enthusiast, map out a route along the Fremont Area Road Tour (landercyclingevents.org) or visit the “Johnny Behind the Rocks” trail system for a high desert experience ranging from beginner to intermediate trails. Check the Bureau of Land Management to see where Fremont County offers ATV−friendly trail systems to get an even closer look into some of the incredible scenery the county offers. for roads that are truly less traveled, take a look into Fremont County’s active rock and ice climbing communities. The county is now a renowned recreational hotspot for professional climbers, who love sharing their knowledge with others through classes, clubs, and yearly events that continue to spark interest in climbing. Check out Sinks and Wild Iris climbing locations for continually updated climbing routes.

IF YOU LIKE TAKING THE LESSER-TRAVELED ROAD: if you and your vehicle prefer dirt over pavement and you want your tires (or feet) to tread off the beaten path, look no further than the hundreds of miles of trail systems in Fremont County open to rock climbing, skiing, WYOMING MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2017

IF YOU LOVE NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE: fremont County encompasses the 2.2 million−acre Wind River Indian Reservation, home to the Eastern Shoshone (see the Pioneer Museum in Lander) and Northern Arapahoe (Riverton Museum) tribes, and artifacts from thousands of years of other Native American communities— including petroglyphs and pictographs throughout the Wind River region. Steatite bowls, embedded horns, and sheep traps once used by “Sheepeater” Indians can be found at the “Dubois Museum: Wind River Historical Center.” powwows are held in fremont county from April to September, where those of Native American heritage continue the long tradition of participating in powerful, energetic dances to honor tribal members, important events, and to seek protection from their people’s elders and ancestors.

Find a full schedule of powwows online at windriver.org. the wild horse, or mustang, played a significant role in the shaping of the American West as we now know it, but it first served as an integral part of the way of life for the Plains Indian. The mustang’s role in modern−day Wyoming is one that is highly contested by ranchers, land owners, conservationists, and other parties—but one thing is for certain: wild horses have a place in the history of the American West, just like any other artifact. Their presence should be shared with those who care to preserve our state’s storied past. to learn more about just how significant the mustang was to the shaping of the many cultures of Fremont County’s Native American populations, plan to make a stop at the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary outside of Lander (windriverwildhorses.com).

H

e’s hard to miss. I say he, because no woman in their right mind, or even out of their mind, ventures out in public dressed like the black−socks−and−sandals, Hawaiian−shirted, overly hairy, obviously from out of town, camera−around−the−neck tourist. This may (or may not) be one of the most popular tourist looks, as many men from all over the world feel the need to dress like there’s some sort of secret code to uphold from a sick, twisted, deep, dark online club. A quick Google search on “socks and sandals” will suck you into an internet black hole that might take days from which to recover. “black socks sandals guy” confidently struts his freshly−pressed Hawaiian−esque shirt and bucket hat down Main Street as if he were in a parade of his own. His trusty DSLR camera swings around his neck to rub his coiffed, finely−groomed, hairy, sweaty chest as he continuously searches for the next tourist attraction to photograph. The only picture here that’s hard to get out of our heads is you, Black Socks Sandals Guy. Maybe you should write that down in your traveler’s Midori notebook to ponder later.

you can find Black Socks Sandals Guy reaching into one of his endless cargo pockets to pull out his printed agenda to get to the next street sculpture, city park or Yelp’s recommended ice cream stand. His cargo shorts hold an endless amount of information. His camera is famous for cutting off appendages, especially if you stand next to him at a famous landmark. It can be difficult for him to see through the lens of his camera with SPF 50 running down his red nose. He’s guaranteed everyone on the trip that this one will be like no other. maybe black socks sandals guy knows something we don’t .‥ but we’re guessing not. Black Socks Sandals Guy, we hate to break it to you, but we’re not staring because we’re jealous. We are a bit confused. From your wardrobe choice, it seems you’re a bit confused as well. The weather in Wyoming is perfect for vacation, and that’s one of the hundreds of reasons we live here. You’ve done your research, and you know this! Perfect sandal weather, you think to yourself .‥ If we could all just give you a simple word of advice though, we’d ask for commitment. No, it’s not to come back each summer just to check to see if the buffalo are still as glorious as you remember them. We’d simply ask you to commit to never wearing socks with sandals again. This has been a PSA. Thank you.

"COMES TO YELLOWSTONE & ATTEMPTS TO DOMESTICATE, (AHEM), STEAL INFANT BISON TOURIST" o all of us who live in wyoming, this one seems like a no brainer: Do not touch the wild animals. we get it. The baby bison calf is so fluffy you wanna die, and you’ve watched countless YouTube videos of how to approach one in distress. Here’s to you, tourist who steals, and/or tries to domesticate, bison upon arriving to Yellowstone.

while sitting in your all−wheel−drive suv, with your winterized UGG boots, drinking your thermos of Arabica coffee (which is soft, sweet and much fruitier than you ever could have hoped), you finally see that baby bison! With its button nose and bootless, cold little feet, who could honestly call themselves a human being and leave this cute little guy out in the cold to suffer? you know that the small herd would not accept your recent online doctorate in animal husbandry, so you jump out screaming, “Come to Momma!” flinging that succulent coffee all over your new North Face winter parka. It doesn’t matter though, because at this very moment, you are now hovering over a freezing and near−death baby bison. You appropriately name him Harambe. Quickly, you open the back hatch of your SUV and buckle Harambe in safely. You don’t want to get a ticket for an unbuckled child.

You then proceed to immediately call PETA to set up an intervention with the Yellowstone Office of the Superintendent. It’s turning into a fabulous day, right up until you get throat−punched with a huge fine and thrown in jail for your stupidity. dear tourist who steals, and/or tries to domesticate, bison upon arriving to Yellowstone, just stop. Please, for the love of all that is good and holy. Stop. The American bison weighs around 1,400 pounds and, although he may seem like a docile, overgrown puppy wanting his belly rubbed, he is actually an animal that can be very aggressive and run up to 40 mph (much faster than you). Do us all a favor and stay in your car. From there, you can enjoy the beauty that God has given us from the safety of your heated leather seats. Take home a photo of that cute little calf. He’ll be fine.

Yellowstone is an awesome place to visit. Let’s make sure it remains that way.

"WANNABE COWBOY WEARING A CORONA STRAW HAT FROM WALMART WITH JEANS TUCKED INTO HIS BOOTS TOURIST"

W

e’ve all seen him. The guy that comes to Wyoming just because he’s always dreamed of being “home on the range,” with his very own pair of boots, a good ol’ fashioned cowboy hat, and his trusty steed, Trigger. If. Only. He. Knew. Sorry, buddy. You aren’t doing a good job of blending in here, pard. You make locals wonder, “Who does this dimestore d−bag think he is?” So, what’s the dead giveaway? Well, we'll give it to you straight. for starters, your designer jeans should not, I repeat not, be tucked into your boots. Yeah, sure, you picked out some dandies with a fantastic pattern on the tops, but you really should have some pants with enough room in the legs to cover them. We’re just going to assume that you’re walking funny because of all the new blisters on your feet from those brand−new boots. Do us a favor and light your Corona cowboy hat on fire, never showing your face in public with it on again. We may not have too many outlaws around anymore, but your outfit should be a crime.

you can find this cowpoke at everything “cowboy” that your town has to offer. Rodeo? He’s there. Street dances? He was born for them. Trail rides? Is there another way get on your own steed? The local bar with the boys? He can tussle with the best of ‘em. The gun range? His middle name happens to be Colt. Heck, this guy would even herd your cattle and mend your fence for free. He’s a YouTube expert.

Just holler. He has new boots and is ready to break them in right. wannabe cowboy wearing the Corona straw−hat from Walmart and his jeans tucked into his boots, we’re flattered that you adore the west and all it has to offer. Quite honestly, we’re pretty fond of it too. And we’re happy that you like the whole cowboy thing. That’s totally fine. Here’s a tip: Money better spent on a hat would be a classic King’s Ropes trucker.

It will be better, trust us.

his girl—let's call her zoe—was forced to come on vacation with the #fam. There’s no doubt about it. You can tell by her resting frown. The only time it changes to a smile is when Zoe selfies to reassure her followers that her life is just about as exciting as it gets. Mom and Dad are looking forward to experiencing the “great outdoors,” and Zoe is determined to do it in heels, while keeping her makeup and hair #onfleek. *cue typical girly−girl voice: “How has it come to this?” she wonders. “What are we, barbarians?” you may mistake her for some sort of a young diva in town to do a show. But believe it or not, some people dress like Zoe all the time. She’s ahead of the curve. You might see someone who is actually from Wyoming wearing a piece of her outfit later that year, emphasis on the might. She has more jewelry on than Mr. T, and could potentially be carrying around a purse the looks like your weekend bag. No one has ever truly seen what Zoe looks like, because in her circle, it’s a crime to walk outside without your makeup looking #perfect. Also, she may use phrasing that sounds like a foreign language. #duh #getalife

where can you find her? Next to any open outlet. Her phone is her life. If you see a girl wearing something that you have never seen before at a local attraction, all while looking completely disgusted and fixated on her phone, there’s a good chance it’s a Zoe staying up−to−date on the rest of the world.

She may be at all the best tourist stops physically, but she’s really with her friends back home in spirit. #loveyouguys #blessed dear zoe: it’s not the end of the world. Wyoming can be scary in heels, but if you put on some hiking boots, you may just enjoy yourself. Stop using your front facing camera, and capture some of the gorgeous views. And remember, if your phone runs out of juice, it just means you were too busy having a good time. Aren’t you #downforwhatever?

ypical. You know the type. These “tourists” really want to help all the animals, because, clearly, they haven’t been getting along without them. A trip to Wyoming is just what they needed to really feel “in−tune” with nature and fully realize their purpose in life. All the animals in L.A. are so much better off with the millions of people living there and creating all that smog, right? Are there even are any animals living in L.A., besides toy poodles and the occasional quack, ‘er duck? so, down to business. Who are these tourists who won’t hesitate to introduce themselves to you and tell you about every single one of their causes? Keep your eyeballs peeled for the “all−natural” type. Sometimes they’ll come with an all−natural smell. You won’t find a scrap of real leather or fur on these philanthropists. They’re sporting the latest in hemp clothing and carrying a Nalgene bottle, because, “Keep that footprint small!” It’s kind of a toss−up between the ones that actually chugged the Kool−Aid and the ones that just tasted enough to pollute their minds. You may find that some are still very comfortable flying in a private jet, but are completely ready for you to take that F−350 “Powersmoke” to the scrapyard for recycling.

these tourists are attracted to local coffee shops like flies to a cow pie. The full on Kool−Aid drinkers roll up in Subaru Outbacks, which they drove cross−country to Wyoming.

They have to get right to work, learning about the state from the comfort of their booth with Macbooks and caramel macchiatos in hand. Just think of all those poor animals left out in the cold year after year! After a quick message to the BFF back home, a message that goes a little something like this: “It’s true, Brenda, these Wyomingites actually let these animals roam unprotected and hunt them for sport at different times of the year. I mean, really? Speaking of animals .‥ Disgusting. This place could really use some peace, love, and order. We’re looking into housing today, and then we’re going to do something about this!” And just like that, the vacay turns into an extended stay. At this point, it’s all over but the crying for Wyoming. we like to tell these tourists that Wyoming is a nice place to visit, but we don’t want you to live here. It’s not you, it’s us. We just need some space. Our animals are already happy, and we are too.

few hours before the rooster crowed on the second of june in the year 1898, the rooster had not yet crowed. At around 3 a.m., the union pacific’s overland flyer was hurtling through wilcox, wyoming, just north of rock river. Said overland flyer, of union pacific railroad, did not make it much past wilcox. it took an unscheduled stop, courtesy of butch cassidy and the hole−in−the−wall−gang. when they weren’t prowling the plains, this particular group of outlaws hitched their horses in Johnson County. Numerous gangs set up their hideouts in the Hole in the Wall pass just west of Kaycee, because of the seclusion and defense from lawmen it offered the desperados. Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch, Kid Curry, and Black Jack Ketchum frequented the hideout’s cabins and stables to escape from the pressures and law of the, well, law.

but back to the not−crowing− rooster. The Hole in the Wall Gang swung a lantern across the train tracks and signaled the Overland Flyer to halt immediately. They should not have done that. But they did do that, and when they did that, three of the gang members climbed into the engine. They forced Grindstone Jones, the engineer, along with the fireman, whose name we do not know, off of the train. Upon resisting, Grindstone was throttled atop his head with a revolver. He was ok, but he apparently just needed some convincing to disembark. the fireman ran the Overland Flyer engine a mile westward, over a small bridge traversing a dry creek.

Once across, the bridge, previously laden with dynamite, was reduced to twigs, rendering the rest of the train— passengers and all—immobile. after they were sure the train wasn’t going anywhere, the outlaws made way towards the safe, which ended up going the way of the bridge. Passengers and crew were corralled inside the train, and

the gang−members fired shots at both doors. By the time the sheriff ’s posse arrived on the scene, the Hole in the Wall Gang had made their escape, with all of the safe’s contents. They were, quite literally, headed for the hills.

this robbery, known as the “Wilcox Holdup,” was covered by newspapers across America, shedding a bit of light on the infamous bandits of the Wild West. Though we can’t be sure which men were involved that morning, we do know a bit about those who hung around the area, causing general havoc.

butch’s first offense was a little strange. He was in a nearby town, and decided he needed some jeans, like, really badly. Much to his disappointment, the clothing shop had closed. However, a strapping lad like himself with questionable morals and a life away from home wasn’t overly discouraged by the closed sign. He entered the shop, stole a pair of jeans and piece of pie, and left an IOU on the table, promising to pay when he found himself in the shop next.

Butch Cassidy obviously, when you’re an outlaw (whether you chose the bandit life or not), you need a name. A name that, when uttered even in the feeblest of whispers, has the power to turn cheese moldy. The name Robert Leroy Parker does not do that. So, Mr. Parker thought, and he thought some more, all while eating stinky cheese. Maybe. However, none of his thinking was very fruitful, and it was in Rock Springs working as

over the next few years, Cassidy robbed banks, stole horses, bought a ranch, and was briefly jailed in Laramie.

Then, he formed the Wild Bunch and became active in the Hole−In−The− Wall gang. The raid on the Overland Flyer created quite the spotlight for Cassidy and his fellows. Eventually,

they had to lay low or get out. Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fled to Bolivia, where they spent a few years living a life of crime before Butch met his end in November of 1908 in a gunfight.

Sundance Kid the sundance kid was another fellow with a less−than−exciting name: Harry Alonzo Longabaugh. Alonzo? Really? in 1882, Sundance left his home of Pennsylvania at 15 with his cousin George in a covered wagon. He then ended up in, any guesses? That’s right: Sundance, Wyoming, where a ranch robbery led to some jail time and the adoption of his nickname. sundance Kid is known for little other than his involvement with the Wild Bunch and Hole in the Wall Gang, but involved he was.

He had quite the reputation as a skilled and speedy marksman, though he doesn’t have any confirmed kills until the shootout in Bolivia where he came to his demise. It’s possible that the reason he never killed was because of his gangs’ aversion to outright violence. They were extremely successful with intimidation and negotiation, though if they had been caught robbing a bank or train, they would’ve been hanged regardless.

Kid Curry kid curry, legal name Harvey Logan, was the less famous “kid” of the Wild Bunch, though we’re not sure that he deserves the slight. Most news articles chronicling the gang’s criminal activity refer to one of the members as “the Kid,” so, perhaps it was Kid Curry the whole time and history has not given him the credit he deserves. Why weren’t the articles more specific? Couldn’t those news people track down some more details? Could they not have googled it? regardless of credit, Curry was known as a wild man, even to the Wild Bunch. He killed nine lawmen in various shootouts in his short 36 years. The first happened in late 1894, when Pike Landusky, a lawman and miner in what’s now Phillips County, Montana, attacked Logan after a false accusation that he was involved with his daughter Elfie. Turns out, Elfie was actually involved with Kid’s brother, Lonny, but that information came out much too late. After being arrested, beaten, and bailed out, Kid Curry ran into Landusky at a bar, where he gave him quite the knuckle sandwich. Curry was ready to leave, thinking he’d won the fight, when Landusky pulled his gun on the unarmed Harvey Logan. Curry took the gun from his friend Jim Thornhill, and when Landusky’s weapon jammed, put his first lawman down.

it was at hole in the wall where Kid Curry met his friend and namesake: “Flat Nose” George Curry.

Flat Nose George remember the whole thing about having a name so terrifying it can rot dairy? Well, that’s not the route Flat Nose took, mostly because he didn’t have much of a choice. There’s not a lot of photographical evidence of his schnoz, but the couple of pictures I could dig up certainly explain the moniker. Really though, if someone started calling you “flat nose,” what could you do about it but laugh and just play along? ol’ flat nose began rustling early in his life, after moving to a Nevada ranch from Canada. Not much is known about his specific activity, other than a couple of reported horse and cattle thefts, as well as involvement with the Wild Bunch. After his train robbin’ days, George headed to the Southwest, where he rustled his last cow in Utah before being caught and shot. upon hearing of flat nose’s death, Kid Curry, who had ridden with and learned from Flat Nose, rode to Utah to avenge him and his brother, Lonny (the one who was actually involved with Elfie), who had been killed by the deputy of the sheriff who took down George.

What can we take away from all this? well, they all got shot. None of them robbed banks until their knees got so bad that they retired to live the rest of their days sippin’ moonshine on their front porches, reminiscing about the good ol’ days. No, they were all dead before any of that could happen.

Did they live a life of excitement? Sure.

Did any of it actually pay off? Not really. they surely enjoyed their plunder for a while between heists, but these rough and tumble outlaws of the old west really were not good dudes. When your occupation is “outlaw,” you’d maybe think of turning over a new leaf. These men did not. Maybe it was because they never realized their mistakes, but they surely had every opportunity to do so. the moral of the story?

Don’t rob banks or trains, don’t steal people’s horses and cows.

It’s just not nice.

hat would summertime be without selfies by the pool, selfies on top of mountains, and selfies documenting the progress of your tan lines? well it just wouldn’t be summer, now would it?

while selfies are a summer must, wasting those gorgeous sunny Wyoming days checking email, chatting on the phone, and working is not how summer was meant to be spent. All Wyomingites know that our state is packed with scenic hikes, one−of−a−kind events, and endless beauty. So why not experience all of that unplugged, tuned−out to the rest of the world? Why not really disconnect this season?

we’ve laid out a few of our favorite ways to disconnect from reality in the great outdoors, and a handful of inside treats for those stormy days. We have “The Obvious” path for those wanting to experience the famous outdoor activities of Wyoming, “The Unique” path for those wanting something new and relaxing, and “The Adventurous” path for those up for multiple days of summer fun. Clear your calendars and slide your phone settings to do not disturb, because you’re headed on one epic summer voyage.

THE OBVIOUS there’s a whole lot of natural ground to cover in Wyoming. The best way to see it all is by hiking. Strap on your hiking boots or best walking shoes and get ready to experience some of the best trails in our state. Grab the dog, the water, and a snack or two. Here we go! we will start off easy. For beginners, a Yellowstone favorite is the must−see Artists Paintpots Trail. The one−mile hike may be small in length but is in big on natural wonders.

while yellowstone can be crowded in the summer months, this particular trail is a bit off the beaten path. As you wind around the wooded areas, you will come upon a group of hot springs that will take your breath away. The vibrant colors in the hot springs are the source for the site’s unique name. Stay awhile and you may even see some thrilling thermal activity. Head up the hill and bubbling mud pots will greet you on the path. If the summer has been rainy, the mud pots appear runny and extra bubbly. If the season is unusually dry, you may be able to catch the mud pots steaming, and the earth around the steam vent will look more crusty than muddy. This is a great beginner’s hike and perfect for a family. Just keep in mind the dangers of thermal areas, and always stay on the trail. ok hotshot, looking for more of a strenuous hike? We have your back—or should we say your glutes? Because after hiking the stairs on Uncle Tom’s Trail, you can feel free to skip legs day at the gym for a good, oh, six months! The stairs first take you about 500 feet down into the canyon,

where you can get the best view of the cascading waterfall. This view is a welcomed moment of peace after the downward trek, but prepare yourself for the climb back up! This trail is also located in Yellowstone, and is popular for those tough cookies who are looking for scenic spots to explore. This is a great day trip for the whole family—or at least those family members that are up for the challenge. Uncle Tom’s Trail is the perfect way to put the emails on hold and truly take in all that Mother Earth has to offer. And by the way, who doesn’t love their good ol’ Uncle Tom? hiking level: master? Then this one’s for you. Near Buffalo, you will find a trailhead that leads you to the tallest peak in the Bighorn National Forest: Cloud Peak. The view from the top doesn’t get much better than this. We strongly encourage shouting “I’m king of the world,” as loud as possible when you make it to the summit. This hike is no laughing matter though. The 22.5− mile stretch is only recommended for experienced hikers and backpackers.

While on this adventure, you will come across the stunning Mistymoon Lake.

Between your first steps onto the trail, and the 13,166 ft. destination, you will experience more than 4,000 ft. in elevation gain, so take it easy and pack appropriately. not a hiker? We still love you, and there are still plenty of lovely ways to take in the natural beauty of Wyoming.

Fishing, anyone? Camping, hello! The possibilities are endless, but here are a few ideas freshly picked from our list of favorites. camping is an absolute must, and is one of the best ways to experience the elements. The Firehole Campground southwest of Rock Springs and next

to Flaming Gorge Reservoir awaits those seeking a one−of−a−kind setting to pitch their tent. The red rock formations surrounding the area make for a striking selfie backdrop, but you will feel so at peace here that you won’t mind holding off on posting and updating your profile pic until the trip is over. central to all of wyoming is an angler’s paradise called Ocean Lake. Known for trout, crappie, and walleye, Ocean Lake has something for everyone. Take the boat out, pack a picnic, hop on and enjoy horseback riding—it can all be done around the reservoir. (Ocean Lake can be found approximately 17 miles north of Riverton on Highway 26.)

s we all know, Wyoming offers many different adventures, outdoor treks, history, and some of the best scenery you can find. Across the world, Wyoming is often in many a fly angler’s fishing fantasy. Wyoming offers more than 27,000 miles of fishable rivers and crystal−clear trout streams that meander their way through the state. Lakes glisten amid high mountain meadows and soaring peaks. The Snake, North Platte, and the Green River are all infamous with anglers. Wyoming offers 22 species of gamefish, but the most common fish are trout, including rainbow, brook, brown, and the cutthroat. Cutthroat trout are the only native trout to Wyoming, and if you manage to catch all four subspecies, (Colorado River, Bonneville, Snake River, and Yellowstone) you can get a Cutt−Slam certificate from the Wyoming Game and Fish. we live in a unique place for a fishery, offering both river and stillwater fishing. Besides trout, Wyoming offers warm water fishing with ample locations to fish for bass, crappie, walleye, pike and carp on the fly. Regardless of what species you are

casting for, fishing spots are special to any angler. With the advancement of technology, like geo−tagging and the instant gratification aspects of social media, avid anglers are seeing their favorite places over−run, littered with trash, and no longer offering the solitude we all seek. One can easily argue we live in a fly fishing paradise, and we should treat it as so. A Wyoming angler could fish a new lake, river, or small stream every day of their life and never fish the same place twice. west of casper, you’ll find a truly a phenomenal and world famous fishery.

The North Platte River is famous for its large brown and rainbow trout, and the tail water aspect means it can be fished year−round. You’ll find a wide variety of aquatic insects with an opportunity to fish subsurface, top water, and streamers.

That “slight Wyoming breeze” will test your casting abilities and the ever−changing weather patterns will keep you on your toes. As an added benefit, there are many local Wyoming based outfitters who are more than willing to guide you through the water and show you around. The North Platte gives anglers a chance to fish a wide variety of terrain ranging

from canyons to high arid plains, and is a large enough river that solitude can still be found for those willing to face the elements or hike. The North Platte River can get heavy pressure, but with fish counts in the thousands per mile, the fishing can be extremely memorable and rewarding. named for a distinctive rock formation that the Crow Indians believed looked like the tongue of a bison, the Tongue River is another scenic fishery that offers rainbow trout, brown trout, and cutthroat trout. A freestone, the Tongue River begins high in the mountains meandering through valleys, roars down through a canyon, and eventually flows to the east. The Tongue River offers anglers a wide variety of fishing opportunities and terrain. A well−presented dry fly can lead you on your way to a fun battle with an eager cutthroat trout. It is definitely a seasonal fishery, but in the summertime, the Tongue River drainage shines. Higher up the river, various hatches keep cutthroat as well as the occasional brook and rainbow trout looking up. Throughout the canyon, various stoneflies and other aquatic insects keep the trout occupied

both subsurface and top water. Due to the river’s smaller size, the Tongue River is susceptible to fishing pressure, however those willing to hike deeper into the canyon or further into the willows will be rewarded—but be sure to watch out for the moose. wyoming’s green river lies in some of the most beautiful country in the state, where the pronghorn roam through sagebrush and people are few and far between.

Fly fishing the Green can be done in complete solitude.

To start, there are 140 miles of freestone stream. The stream starts from the Green River Lakes just north of Pinedale on the west side of the Wind River Mountain Range. With an average trout size of 14−16 inches hidden in pocket water, pools, riffles and open runs, you’ll find plenty of chances to catch native cutthroat, brown trout, rainbow, brook, golden and even the rocky mountain whitefish.

a fly fishing journey through this great state wouldn’t be complete without a stop on the Snake River.

With its headwaters north of Jackson Hole, the mighty Snake makes its way south through Jackson and runs through Bridger Teton National Forest. A large portion of the river flows through what could be the most scenic sections of the United States: the ever−impressive soaring peaks of the Teton Range. In addition to eager native cutthroat trout, you will see a wide variety of wildlife including moose, elk, deer, and eagles. Perhaps one of the best rivers for both beginner and experienced anglers, the Snake is a fun river to throw attractor flies and imitations of large terrestrial insects. The Snake River cutthroat are not usually selective and will eagerly take a stonefly or terrestrial.

wyoming isn’t only known for its vast variety of river fishing. Splattered throughout the state are thousands of ponds, lakes, and reservoirs that offer any angler a shot at a wide variety of both warm and cold−water species. Ranging from the high plains, to high mountain alpines, and low lying valleys, various bodies of water provide ample opportunities for the stillwater angler. Trout are the primary target of many stillwater anglers who fish Wyoming, and many lakes and reservoirs are famous for producing trophy−sized fish. If size doesn’t matter to you, many high alpine lakes provide the opportunity to catch rare species of trout and solitude, as well as offering some very technical and challenging experiences. there are a more than a few bodies of water that offer the angler who may not be interested in trout fishing an opportunity to catch bass, walleye, crappie, pike, catfish, and carp on the fly. Anglers willing to challenge themselves and try something new will find that most warm water species fight hard, are aggressive and require different techniques to be caught. as you travel through Wyoming on your fly fishing quest, keep in mind that many of your fishing destinations will be in prime bear habitat. It’s likely that you’ll come across moose, deer, elk and a variety of other animals. Carry your bear spray and be alert. Large willows can easily hide a cow moose and her calf. Also keep private water laws in mind, and remain in your vessel and on marked trails. for local conditions, guided trips, and recommended flies, be sure to check out the local fly shops in each region.

here is one thing that Wyoming is certainly big on, and that’s small towns. Living in the country but having a strength in close communities is something that no Wyoming native takes for granted. While millions of people are raised looking out at the city lights, we get to look up at the stars. And while millions more hustle every morning through jam−packed highways, life happens at a much more comfortable pace in Wyoming. this could not be more true than for the town of Buford, Wyoming, the smallest town in America. Its population: One. That one is Brandon Hoover, an incredibly hard worker and employee of the the PhinDeli Town Buford Trading Post.

manager of the trading post and close friend of Hoover’s, Jason Hirsch proudly wears the title of “Town Manager” in Buford. He and Hoover are local celebrities, and have the pleasure of meeting just about every single person that passes through this quiet mountain town. from memorial day to labor day, the Trading Post is anything but slow. Nearly 1,000 people come through the doors each day during the busy season. With a prime location off of Interstate 80, people travel into Buford from the East Coast to the West Coast, and from Australia to Iceland. Hirsch has met customers from just about every part of the world, including the owner of the town, Pham Dinh Nguyen of Vietnam. yes, “owner.” A Vietnamese investor, Nguyen purchased the town of Buford in an online auction for $900,000 in 2013. First founded in 1866, Buford was once a railroad town. Now, it is perhaps best known for its population of one, and for having been purchased online.

at only 38−years−old, Nguyen had a goal in mind when he became owner of the smallest town in America.

That goal was to sell PhinDeli coffee.

Giving the town and Trading Post the rebranded name, “PhinDeli Town of Buford,” and “PhinDeli Town Buford Trading Post,” Nguyen has left a special mark on this town and those who know it. Many of the seasonal customers come in to try the coffee, which is only sold in this tiny Wyoming town ... and Vietnam. the gourmet blend “Giot Dang” is not only fun to say but is also well liked by customers and Hirsch himself.

Though Nguyen has only stopped through town a handful of times, he is a celebrity in Vietnam. Proudly wearing a cowboy hat around, he is known as “The Mayor,” in his home of Saigon.

The Trading Post is the one and only business in Buford. Functioning as a gas station, convenience store, gift shop, and more, it may seem as if the money flows in sweetly. Buford branded t−shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, and several souvenirs line the shelves.

Necessary supplies make it a go−to for many travelers and neighbors. And we all have to fill our tanks. There are dozens of ways the Trading Post brings in money to keep it afloat. Yet Hirsh spends many of his 12−hour shifts “flying by the seat of my pants,” wondering, “What bills can I pay?” winters can be cruel along I−80, as winds and snow often force the interstate to close. Hirsch said he spends his winters “trying to get from point A to point B.”

as the cold rolls in and the blizzards start building after Labor Day, the 1,000 customers per day falls to 50 per day.

Without financial assistance and promises unfulfilled, Hirsh worries that the future of this beloved town and his business could be dim. in october of 2015, the opportunity to lease the Trading Post became available. Then, as a store clerk, Hirsh saw his chance to help grow the business he had invested so much of his life and time in. Growing up just outside Buford, his heart is fully in this town. You can hear it in his voice, and in the way he worries about a possible shutdown. what would a shutdown of the Trading Post mean for a town of one? What would it mean for a business with a unique history that almost seems like fiction? with a hopeful heart, Hirsh is optimistic that the summer and the “close−knit community” will turn things around. it’s not only the popularity and convenience that help support the town. “summertime up here is spectacular,” Hirsch said, and

that’s exactly why so many people come through. nearby is mountain biking, countless outdoor adventures, and Vedauwoo, which is world−renowned for camping, climbing, and hiking. Coast to coast trips along I−80 are also incredibly popular for families on summer break. what better way to experience America than by visiting an exceptional town in each state? the surrounding community, along with Hirsch and Hoover, has been able to capitalize a bit on the summer business boom, in order to make Burford even more of a must−see. Hirsch has tried several times to plan events to bring the community close. One in particular has succeeded. last july, the first annual Windstock festival next to the Trading Post drew 200 people for live music and fun in the sun. The second annual Windsock will be July 8, and the crowd is expected to grow. A local motorcycle club will host a poker run with an expected participation of 200 people.

The Volunteer Fire Department will host a town fundraiser, and some big names will take center stage, including The Avenue, Moe Diggin, and Sean Hess.

if you’re not able to take in the sounds and sights of Windstock, perhaps you will be lucky enough to catch Hoover playing music in the Trading Post sometime. With his knack for drawing in customers, and Hirsch’s business mindset, Hirsch says the two of them make a pretty good team. for hirsch, the drive up the road from the Trading Post to his homestead relieves the stress and worry he carries as town manager. His horse Sugar Pie, his goats, and his chickens keep Hirsch company in his spare time. hirsch’s family lives in Denver, Colorado, and after living there once himself, he knows that he has no desire to leave Buford again. that makes his hard work keeping the store standing that much harder. “i absolutely love it here,” hirsch said.

once summer rolls out, it’s uncertain what lies ahead for Buford. The tale of Buford teaches us that small towns— even when the population is only one—do not equal small communities. Numerous calls from the media, support from friends of the Trading Post, and the seasonal customers that spend a summer day or two taking in the smallest town in America all build upon the story and strength that keep Hirsh, Hoover, and the heart of Buford holding on. add buford to the very top of your bucket list.

Make it a major stop on this summer’s vacation. Towns this special deserve a spot on the map. Be sure to venture into the PhinDeli Town Buford Trading Post for a souvenir, some Chugwater Chili, and you might just meet “the one!”

During the summer, the store is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and in the winter, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

and who wouldn’t? With breathtaking mountain views, a special claim to fame, and two of the friendliest faces running the town’s only business, we have to believe that this is one town that is going to pull through.
