A Letter to Our Readers Writing a letter from the editor for a January issue is usually pretty easy – like the Roman god Janus, look back at the old year, and look forward to the new one. That works fine, unless the year that just transpired was one you don’t particularly want to look back at, unless it’s to make sure you drove that stake deep enough into its heart that it won’t rise from the grave. John Oliver, the former Daily Show correspondent who has an excellent weekly show on HBO, wrapped up the last show of his season in November, shortly after – well, you know. The last part consisted of folks on the street delivering their epitaphs for a year not even in its final month yet, most of which included a hand gesture and a suggestion for 2016, using a verb probably best not written out here. (If you see Kay, as the old blues song says, ask her.)
Ah well, it’s over now. Forget the old, look forward to the new, and – wait… Did the lid of that coffin just move? –Michael Abedin
SHE’S THE ONLY ONE A songwriting lesson with Melissa Etheridge B
ack in October, I wrote about how I used the Law of Attraction and the Law of Right Action to attract legendary singer-songwriter-guitarist Melissa Etheridge. At that time, I hadn’t met her yet, or had my songwriting lesson with her. Well, now I have. As I write this in Los Angeles, I’ve had my session with her yesterday, at her home. She met me outside her door, hugged me, gave me that Melissa million-dollar smile, and said, “I didn’t know you were a fan.” A fan is an understatement. I’m a fan-atic. I’ve been in awe of her performing and her music since around 1995.
To be standing with her was surreal. As it turns out, Melissa is a fan of my work, as well as the work of the rest of the teachers from the movie The Secret. She’s personal friends with Tony Robbins. (Tony introduced ho’oponopono to her and her sweet spouse.) She reads all the deep-end metaphysical books. She says she began around 2003 by picking up Ken Wilber’s The Theory of Everything, which is like learning how to swim by being dropped in the Atlantic Ocean. Her spirituality and understanding of manifestation has helped her awaken and achieve even greater levels of success in more recent years. She told me that lying on her back, with cancer, and watching the movie The Secret, forced her to think about what she wanted in her life. “If I am this powerful being who gave myself cancer and can create whatever I want, then I want healed, I want to make more music, and I want to win an Oscar.”

Of course, she went on and did all of that.

My time with Melissa was about songwriting, but she began it by asking about my life in music, my books, and then by showing me her guitar collection. Her favorite guitars are in the trailer that goes on the road with her. But she has a guitar room with them lining the walls, like playable art. And she has a studio with old and new and prototype guitars. (Ovation is releasing an ME electric in January). She also has more guitars in storage. Of course, I related, understood, and told her of my own collection, which she says she wants to see one day.
We went in her home studio to focus on my actual lesson. We each had a guitar. I had my songbook, where I jot ideas and snippets and songs. She said the songbook is sacred. (Later, I had her sign mine, making it even more priceless to me.) From there she had me pick a song idea. She wanted to know the why for writing a song. “What’s important to say in the song? Why do you want to write it? What’s the intention for it?” She told me how she wrote some of her own songs, first thinking about why she wanted to write them. She explained that for her song Pulse, she wanted people to know that the person who went into a nightclub and shot dozens of people did so because he was in pain. She also explained that for the Al Gore slide show about global warning, she wanted people to know that “I have to change,” not anyone else. I found her to be a deep thinker, cutting to the core with her messages. I told her about wanting to tell people how they could be happy now, and manifest their lives using the Law of Attraction, and more. She nodded, accepting my reasons.
From there, for Melissa, it all begins with what I call a brain dump. “Just write words,” she said. “Let it be okay whatever comes.”
She also advised me to “fall in love with words.” She uses a paperback thesaurus to look up other words, so she isn’t using words that are too common or too clichéd. While I had been using Masterwriter, a popular software for songwriters, I found using a printed thesaurus slower, but more enlightening. The time spent looking up a word gave my mind time to think, and the alternate words were often surprising and triggered other thoughts. We began with me wanting to write a song about miracles, since my new book is titled The Miracle. But within minutes, the song became about The Great Something, a concept I write about in my book The Secret Prayer. Instead of saying God, or Divine, or Universe, I refer to the super power behind all of life as “The Great Something.” Melissa loved “The Great Something” because it made you want to know more. In a song, it would make you want to listen. I got excited watching the song unfold with Melissa’s help. Melissa often writes pages of words and phrases, knowing that later she will edit them.
“Editing is the fun part,” she told me. She pointed to the back cover of my album, One More Day, to the line Self-help messages in 3 minutes or so. “That’s the challenge,” she said, smiling bright. “To condense pages of ideas into a three minute song.” “That’s why I’m here,” I said. Her songwriting template, more often than not, is to write a verse, then go right to the chorus, then to a verse, chorus, bridge, and chorus again. “It’s stating the problem in the verse, and often a solution in the chorus,” she explained. “The next verse might spell out the problem more, and the chorus will again offer the upbeat solution.”
One of the biggest insights for me was the idea of writing in the first person. Melissa says first person songs are more personal and hit home with people. Second person, or you oriented songs, are one step removed from the listener and have less impact. More often than not, she writes in the first person. I started to play with the idea of writing The Great Something song in the first person. I instantly felt more connected to the song, and felt more power in the message. I also saw myself get more excited and inspired. “Always write from inspiration,” she’d told me earlier. “Get to that place where you have tingles of excitement for whatever you are about to write,” she added. “Never write without the tingles.” She doesn’t meditate, but often walks in nature, looks at trees and flowers, reads some poetry, reviews songs from
people she admires, from Bruce Springsteen to Neil Diamond, all to ignite her inspiration. I told her I smoke cigars. She didn’t seem to relate to that. Of course, she lives in a state where cannabis is legal.
Ballsy, not girlie. Later, she asked me to sing for her. Now, try to imagine that. I’m a star-struck beginner at singing, sitting in the home studio of a rock and roll legend who has the most soaring voice of all time, and she says, “Sing for me.” That’s like having Elvis ask you to sing. Well, I did. I played a snippet of my song One More Day, off my One More Day album, and a snippet of my song Today’s the Day, off my Strut album. I also played a little instrumental, to give her a sense of what Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon and I create. I was off key, out of step, and out of tune, but I did it anyway. Melissa smiled big, and said she bets the recorded versions with the band are stellar. I then asked about singing advice. Melissa took a breath and gave me a long, wise, hypnotic answer about watching the Ed Sullivan Show on TV and being influenced by Tom Jones, Janis Joplin, Robert Plant, and others. She noticed their joy in singing was what was so captivating. She went on to say she wanted her music to be ballsy, not girlie. She didn’t want to sing head voice, though she could. She wanted something deeper and harder. I related, and told her I often felt more comfortable singing with a baritone guitar, which lowered my voice into my chest. “That’s a good place for your voice,” she said. “It’s at home there.”
She also gave advice on performing. “Never perform sitting down,” she said. “It cuts off your breathing.” “And always eat, be hydrated, and get plenty of rest, so you can deliver your performance with full power.” I’ll be processing my time with Melissa Etheridge for the rest of my life. I found her open, loving, generous, spiritual, fearless, talented, present, friendly and wise. Thanks to Melissa, my new album has a new title – The Great Something. She even invited me to speak on her next cruise ship concert. (!) I was a fan (fanatic) before meeting her in person. Today, I’m in love. Hey, Melissa, I want to come over – again! PS – Please note whenever you have an expert coach, you, your experience and expertise leap in incalculable measures. Melissa Etheridge heard a limiting belief come out of my mouth that I didn’t hear – and I was the one who said it. We all need a coach. (Consider Miracles Coaching.)

Now the Indians are dressing up like cowboys And the cowboys are putting leather and turquoise on – Michael Murphey, Cherokee Fiddle
F
ifty years ago, the Sixties had built up a pretty good head of crazy steam, slamming past Richard Nixon’s election in 1968, Woodstock (and its dark twin, Altamont) in 1969, churning straight into the Seventies. The Seventies were the Sixties in a lot of places, in fact, as fallout from a cosmic explosion of art, music, fashion, and all manner of new (and, occasionally, altered) forms of consciousness drifted down between the coasts. Cosmic is a pretty good description of the times, metaphorically and maybe literally, since all the hubbub was said to be from a rare and wonderful alignment of the stars and planets. C’mon, sing along – you know the words…
When the Moon is in the Seventh House, and Jupiter aligns with Mars… Guess what? It’s rumored that same alignment of planets and stars – or at least one close enough for anti-government work – has been driving the current round of craziness you’d have to be dumb as a bag of moon rocks not to have noticed. Not sure if Jupiter is aligned with Mars or what house the Moon is in lately, but someone did mention recently that Pluto is in Uranus, which seems like an odd and uncomfortable place for a cartoon dog. Explains a lot, though, since “odd” and “uncomfortable” tend to be words in widespread usage when cosmic tides are washing in like tsunamis on Adderall. If you were around way back when, you remember what else was going on in the middle of all the music and the fun.
Yep – protests. You can run from change, as they say, but you can’t hide. Sometimes you just have to cowboy up – hitch up your gun belt, plant your feet, get ready to take a stand.
8
Cosmic cowboys. Ironically, in Standing Rock, it’s Indians who are cowboying up – like Michael Martin Murphey’s, written and recorded around ’77 or so, when he only had two names and had drifted down to Austin from Dallas. Austin hipped up early. In the mid-Seventies, there wasn’t any talk of keeping it weird or being the capital of anything but Texas. Murphey. Ray Wylie, Buckwheat, Jerry Jeff, and Willie and Waylon and them had a couple of different nicknames. They were sometimes called Cosmic Cowboys, although usually not to their faces. Most often, they were called what they were – outlaws, long-haired troublemakers who cowboyed up against the music industry and its notion of what country music should be. Back when outlaws played tunes on six-guns instead of sixstrings, there were gunfighters and showmen, cosmic cowboys as wild and colorful as the Indians they sometimes fought. Wild Bill Hickock was one, and it would be easy enough to reckon he was the model for January’s cover by Amanda Sage, being as how it’s called Wild Bill.
Reckon again. It’s another Bill, just as wild. William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s Wild West shows travelled the world from 1887 to 1906, featuring sharpshooting, daredevil riding, and performances by legends of the West, including Siting Bull and Annie Oakley. Amanda painted him from a matchbox found in a Vienna flea market, from his European tours. “I admired his stance with Native Americans and women, using theater to educate people. I imagine he’d be sad to see what’s happened to the West, and would be a strong voice for waking people up.” She painted him as she thought he’d look now – an eccentric, inter-dimensional, time-travelling freedom fighter, in the shadow of chemtrails and the cookie-cutter grid of the West. Take a stand. Grow yourself some crazy hair, get gunfighter eyes, put leather and turquoise on. Cowboy the hell up – it’s time. www.AmandaSage.com

HAPPY H20! Drinking in the New Year
It’s that’s time again, starting out a new year full of intentions. How long will you make it this time? Everyone always has new fitness goals. Lose some holiday pounds, start exercising. First, though – and most importantly – start by hydrating yourself with fresh, clean water. Then get some exercise, maybe walk around outside barefoot (weather permitting), and get plenty of sleep.
Sounds easy, doesn’t it? With all the liquid options available, we often forget the simple choice, the basis of everything we consume – water. In the developed world, we ignore the health benefits of water in favor of the sugary beverages available at every corner. Over two-thirds of your body is made up of H20. How does that break down? t #MPPE øPXJOH UISPVHI ZPVS CPEZ BOE EFMJWFSJOH nutrients? 82% water. t .VTDMFT IPMEJOH ZPVS CPOFT BOE NPWJOH ZPVS CPEZ 75% water. t -VOHT QVNQJOH PYZHFO DSVDJBM UP ZPVS TVSWJWBM water. t #POFT QSPUFDUJOH ZPVS PSHBOT XBUFS t #SBJO " XIPQQJOH XBUFS
Water’s no secret weight loss tool. It will act as a thirst quencher, though, and kick calories by replacing high-calorie beverages. Subbing your daily can of a soft drink with a bottle of fresh water will cut out 130 calories a day – that equals 910 a week, 3900 a month, 47,450 a year – and that’s thirteen pounds a year. If you’re trying to lose weight, don’t drink your calories. Save that for food. Water-rich foods help fill you up faster, look like a bigger portion than they are, and help hydrate you. Foods with the health benefits of water include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, and oatmeal and other hot cereals. H20 is also a fountain of youth and energy. Water is responsible for powering your cells, generating electrical and magnetic energy inside the mitochondria, your cells’ energy factories, and serving as the cells’ primary bonding agent that enables them to maintain proper structure. Water is the main substance and source of life, integral to your body’s function and performance. Nutrients are metabolized and assimilated only after they are broken down into smaller particles – a function facilitated by water. Monkeys, Roosters, and leaving your Baggage Behind
by Leslie Anne 2016 brought a magnitude of negativity – anger, violence, hatred, fear, lies, pain – that fell in line with the egotistical, manipulative, and restless negative traits of the Year of the Monkey. Time to shed 2016 and make way for the Year of the Rooster, supposed to bring dawn, awakening, triumph, and success through hard work. There are several ways to work through negative energy brought on by outside influences, or by disagreements with loved ones, co-workers, even strangers. (Road rage is a way of taking on someone else’s energy.) You have the ability to eliminate negative energy through a variety of modalities and practices, but here’s a specific exercise to use when your Monkey Mind’s full of outside interference.

LBJ at Austin’s Zach, January 25-March 5.
by Michael Abedin Fifty-three years ago, John F. Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas. His vice-president, a good ol’ boy from the Texas Hill Country, took the oath of office with Kennedy’s widow standing beside him in a bloodstained pink dress. If you were old enough to know what was happening, particularly if you lived in Texas, it was probably one of the most defining moments of your life. The next five years were full of defining moments. The Sixties were shaped, for better or worse, by Lyndon Baines Johnson, and his legacy shaped the course of American society, right up to now.
He called it the Great Society. LBJ was a seasoned political hand when he took office, and he didn’t waste any time. Within a few months, he’d worked his magic on Congress and civil rights leaders to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, even though he reckoned it would hand the South to Republicans for a long time to come. He was right – from 1968 until 1992, there was only one Democratic presidential term. From 1964 to 1968, though, LBJ not only passed civil rights legislation, he created a network of nearly two hundred programs supporting education, healthcare, the arts, the environment, urban development, poverty, automotive and workplace safety, and voting rights, wresting a lot of power from corporations in the process.
Once upon a time, in a land slipping far, far away… What made all this possible was a notion now almost totally discredited – that political opponents could, even after bitter disputes, work together with some degree of respect, and support legislation they opposed if it turned out to be right for the American people. (The first two Republican presidents following LBJ, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, not only continued many of his programs, they expanded on them.) A lot of LBJ’s Great Society was a continuation of JFK’s New Frontier. Even more of it was influenced by Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal of the 1930’s. Johnson grew up in rural Texas near Austin, son of a tenant farmer during the Great Depression, and taught in poor Hispanic schools. He knew firsthand what could happen to regular folks when corporations rule, and what government could do about it.
14
He also saw America come together to win a world war, but another war broke his spirit and led him to decline the 1968 nomination after his landslide 1964 win, telling America in a somber televised announcement, “I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your president.”
V. It once stood for Victory. By the Sixties, it was the peace sign, and the first letter of the war the peace movement opposed. Vietnam was a hand-me-down war Johnson inherited from JFK, who inherited it from Eisenhower and the French, and opposition to it launched probably the greatest cultural revolution in American history, radicalizing an entire generation. It also undermined LBJ. Johnson took a hard line on Vietnam in his 1964 landslide win, trying to out-hawk Barry Goldwater. Making good on his hawkishness drained resources from the Great Society and made him the target of antiwar sentiments. The Tony-winning Broadway play All the Way dramatized LBJ’s fight for the Civil Rights Act, showing at Austin’s Zach Theatre in 2015. The Great Society picks up where it left off, documenting LBJ’s Shakespearean rise and fall as he crafted a society we’ve taken for granted for over fifty years – half a century, the blink of an eye in the course of history. Criticizing government is a luxury easily enjoyed rolling down interstate highways financed by federal funds, in a vehicle made safe by government oversight, strapped in by federally mandated seatbelts, listening to radio stations you can hear because a federal agency regulates frequencies. A lot of what made our society great was the work, not of corporations, but of initiatives launched by LBJ’s Great Society.
Synchronicity. At precisely this point in writing this article, the closing words of Charlie Wilson’s War, the true story of another political wheeler-dealer from Texas who masterfully worked the system to help defeat Russia in Afghanistan, flashed on TV: These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world. Then we f----d up the end game. – Charlie Wilson Charlie wouldn’t want us to do that again. Neither would LBJ. Tickets, showtimes: www.ZachTheatre.org
STANDING WITH THE ROCK Art that Feeds I
n 1876, a confederation of Plains tribes played on the vanity of General George Armstrong Custer, who hoped to follow in the footsteps of Andrew Jackson and ride a reputation as an Indian fighter into the presidency. They lured him into what he thought was an easy victory, but combined forces of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho, under the leadership of mystic Lakota warriors Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, wiped out Custer and his 7th Cavalry troops at the Battle of the Greasy Grass – the Little Bighorn. They were inspired by a vision from Sitting Bull, a holy man of the Hunkpapa Lakota, who later performed in Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. In 1890, another holy man, a Paiute, taught the People to dance the Ghost Dance, to drive whites from their lands and bring back the buffalo and the spirits of their ancestors. Tribal police were sent to arrest Sitting Bull so he wouldn’t support the Ghost Dance, and he was killed in the confrontation – on the Standing Rock Reservation.
The Black Snake. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Standing Rock has been the epicenter of a new gathering of the tribes, an encampment to protest the Black Snake – a pipeline of fracked crude oil destined for the Gulf of Mexico. Part of our grand move towards energy independence, you ask? Not really – it’s intended to be sold overseas. The Dakota Access Pipeline was originally set to run under the Missouri River near Bismarck, North Dakota, but Bismarckers were understandably upset about that, and the Black Snake was sent crawling to the Standing Rock Rez – where it would threaten drinking water for millions of people downstream, and encroach on sacred tribal lands, breaking one more treaty. It’s not the first broken treaty, not the first time something toxic has been dumped on indigenous land – but it’s also not the first rodeo for the Lakota, a tribe that kicked Custer’s butt and spawned the American Indian Movement and the Second Battle of Wounded Knee in 1973.
Protectors. By August of last year, young tribal members from Standing Rock were protesting the pipeline. Before long, tens of thousands of Water Protectors from around the world descended on Standing Rock, including thousands of military vets who vowed to stand, peacefully, between the Water Protectors and the weapons arrayed against them by law enforcement – tear gas, rubber bullets, and, ironically, water cannons. In the glare of international scrutiny, the Army Corps of Engineers backed off the project, although rumor has it the company financing the pipeline is biding their time until a
more favorable political climate comes along – around January 20, give or take a few days. Flush with what seemed like victory, a lot of Protectors have headed home, leaving about a thousand settled in for a bitter winter – and they could use some support. Visionary artist Amanda Sage, whose artwork has been on several Austin All Natural covers, is partnering with Conscious Alliance, a Boulder, Colorado non-profit that provides food, education, and other support to communities that need it – especially native American communities. Their slogan is Art That Feeds, and proceeds from the sale of limited edition prints of Amanda’s original piece, Sacred Alignment, will go to help those still standing at Standing Rock. At the height if the protest, a herd of buffalo was filmed running through the site. Maybe the Ghosts of the Ancestors are still dancing. To learn more about Conscious Alliance and purchase limited edition prints of Sacred Alignments, with all proceeds supporting the Water Protectors of Standing Rock, go to: bit.ly/SacredAlignmentPoster

hen someone has bad breath or a skunky body odor, you just have to back up a bit and get out of range. Well, our negative emotions can be just as offensive. Someone who’s always complaining, raging, or who puts a negative spin on every circumstance ends up alienating themselves in much the same way. There are also people who try to control others through their criticisms of them. Regardless of whether there’s intent behind these behaviors, no one wants to be caught in someone’s cyclones of pain and manipulation. Emotions are something all normal people feel in response to the ups and downs of life. They have an energy that’s meant to be felt, released, and moved through, as feedback about our circumstances. They are real, and feeling them is healthy. We all vibrate according to the emotional states we’re in. If we’re sad or angry, we vibrate at a very low frequency. Alternatively, if we’re in holy reverence, gratitude, or feeling love, we resonate at very high vibrational frequencies.
The thing is, others feel our vibration, whether we can or not. Some people don’t experience their emotions at all. They operate from a safe place of “pure” logic that’s out of touch with how they truly feel. They’ve been told their feelings are not of value. Since emotions are energy, repressing them means we’re choosing to store them in our bodies somewhere. This can often lead to somatic symptoms that elicit pain, or even illness. Repressed emotions do eventually find their way to the surface, however, but more often than not, they morph into rage or passive aggressiveness. For many, anger is the only emotion that’s acceptable to express, as it commands power instead of connoting weakness. There’s a power that comes from being the naysayer as well. When we criticize others, we’re willfully extinguishing their enthusiasm. As their balloons of hope hiss and deflate into nothing, the critic finds himself (or herself ) basking in a seductive sense of superiority.
16
Others find they feel safer if they expect the worst, so they focus on the impossibilities, rather than the possibilities, of any given situation. This keeps them from feeling disappointed and disillusioned – but they want to do this with your circumstances, too. There are others still who stay stuck in their emotions, instead of repressing them and lashing out unexpectedly, or raining on your parade. They stew, and even start to use them as weapons to manipulate others. They hold you hostage if you don’t behave according to their agenda. A volley of anger puts you in your place, or they suck you in, pulling you down into their dark undertow with tales of woe.
You may not even know it’s happening. You only know others are backing away. We all need to take stock and look at how we may be polluting our own environments with our unprocessed emotions. Do you need others to feel bad to even the playing field, for example? Perhaps you need others to feel good, so you can too? Do you need to make your point, and come out on top? What is all this about? Good emotional hygiene starts with taking responsibility for our own emotions and working through them. Instead of stuffing them, or bringing someone down to our level (or below), we need to address why we feel so small and threatened. This is the place to work. This is what stops us from feeling love and gratitude for others. We can all feel a fake happy – choose to bring in true light instead. Shine on brothers and sisters. Shine on. AUTISM AND MERCURY TThe he E Egyptian gyptian C Connection onnection CZ %S 5SFWPS #PUUT The cause of autism is one of the most heated healthcare debates in recent years. For every suggestion – diet, heredity, chemical toxicity – there’s a counter-argument. Some, like vaccines or gluten, have become social and political issues, saying a lot about our healthcare, social, and political systems. Part of the problem, on both traditional and holistic sides of the fence, is the Silver Bullet Syndrome – find a single cause, find a single, miraculous solution.
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. There’s no guaranteed, linear path for the progression of any disorder, disease, or discomfort, even, say, exposure to a virus – some “catchâ€? it, some don’t. Your body’s systems are way too complex to call every shot. A lot of autism factors are identified anecdotally, but get shot down by “no direct causal relationship has been proven‌â€? arguments. (Tell that to a parent who cut gluten from their kid’s diet and saw a complete turnaround in behavior, until the next bite of wheat. Be ready to duck, in case a dinner roll comes sailing your way.) Want hard research? One recent study indicates Vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy can contribute to autism. Another promises to be even more conclusive, and the lead-in to it doesn’t require any cautious wording.
Mercury isn’t good for your brain. It’s the second most potent neurotoxin on the planet, right after plutonium. It’s showing up in a lot of unexpected places in the environment, and some that are expected, since we put it there. Thimerosal, a preservative that’s 50% mercury by volume, has been used in multiple-dose vials of vaccines (including flu shots) for around eighty years, and mercury amalgam fillings have been used in dentistry since before the Civil War. (Fair warning – don’t dive into the vaccine autism debate without a wetsuit and tanks. It’s a deep, dark, sinkhole of craziness.) Instead, dive into a series of recent studies, including one published in 2016, indicating a direct correlation between mercury and autism, using research conducted by good scientific standards and published in reputable journals. Get a flu shot that doesn’t come from a single-dose vial or syringe, chances are you might get an injection of mercurybased preservative. Have amalgam fillings? Chance isn’t involved – you have a neurotoxin in your mouth, inches from your brain. Same for your kids, but even if they don’t have a single filling they can still theoretically be exposed to heavy metal toxicity if you or your spouse had them. One filling-free
18
Austin holistic practitioner, confused by tests revealing high blood levels of heavy metal toxicity, realized both parents had mouthfuls of decades-old amalgam fillings, and one was having them removed and being treated for toxicity.
A caveat, however. If you have amalgam removed, get it done properly. Dr. Matthew Carpenter, of Austin’s Transcend Dental Health, points out simply grinding them out, rinsing, and spitting exposes you – and dental professionals in the office, including receptionists – to mercury vapor, and flushes mercury into water systems. Carpenter uses state of the art testing, removal, recovery, and disposal systems for heavy metals, combined with IV Vitamin C, safe, needle-free chelation, and other supportive therapies. He’s also researched (and offers) testing for hereditary susceptibility to heavy metal poisoning. Oh, and those studies about Vitamin D and mercury? None of them were from this country. The mercury research was done in Egypt, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has something to say about that: Why can a chaotic society in a war-torn and relatively impoverished nation produce high quality science on‌ autism, while the science on environmental triggers of autism in the U.S. is stagnant, despite the NIH spending more than $1 billion on autism research since 2010?
Why, indeed? The official CDC position is that mercury in medical products is “very safe. Data from many studies show no evidence of harm‌â€? Right – and to quote Levon Helm’s crusty gunsmith in Shooter, WMD’s were in Iraq and Anna Nicole married for love. In the case of neurodevelopmental conditions – autism, ADHD, Alzheimer’s – could mercury and other heavy metal exposure be a tipping point, after diet and heredity and such have set up the fall? The mechanisms that should answer such questions and protect you and your family from balance-tipping toxins probably won’t be improving anytime soon. It’s up to you to learn, make decisions, and find practitioners. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, natural alternatives to antibiotics, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, and consultations regarding the Detox Qube from Quicksilver Scientific to lower existing metal loads, including a panoramic x-ray for visualizing remaining metals in the oral cavity. THE
TRIAD
OF HEALTH by John Bandy, DC., and Norma Bell Bandy, RN The basic model of health in chiropractic, Rolfing, and other holistic practices is an equilateral triangle – the Triad of Health, representing mechanical, chemical, and psychological stresses that cumulatively cause disease. Chiropractic founder D. D. Palmer stated that if you think of these three combined stressors as environmental irritation, then both disease and health are a direct result of your level of resistance to them. If environmental irritation is greater than resistance, disease results – if resistance is greater, health results. In other words, disease and health are both products of the same relationship between stress and resistance, and it’s incorrect to say holistic practitioners treat disease – we treat health. Our job is to lower total stress loads and increase resistance, so the body can heal itself. When any stress becomes greater than resistance, there are three basic possibilities. The body (or organ or cell) can die, heal, or adapt. This is ongoing in everyone, beginning at conception, perhaps even before. Over time, you’ve made countless adaptations, each being made on top of all those previously made.

Want to Feel Better?
Symptom retracing. This process is responsible for the phenomenon Palmer called symptom retracing, going back through a symptom history – get your lower back fixed, your neck starts to feel like it did after a car wreck years ago. A layer of adaptation peeled back and allowed the car wreck symptoms to surface. That’s why chiropractic and Rolfing are whole-body modalities. Treat just the area of concern, and concern can pop up somewhere else. Treat the whole body, and the next area, the next layer of the onion, is better prepared to deal with the next combination of stress. Eventually, the process becomes one lowering stress factors and increasing resistance for preventive purposes – treating health, not disease. Your triangle becomes a tetrahedron, a three-dimensional assembly of triangles, a pyramid with your physical, mental, and emotional bodies as a base, and your spiritual body at the point. And that is the point, the point of your journey – to uncover enough layers to manifest spirit clearly through the physical, mental, and emotional bodies. John Bandy, D.C., and Norma Bell Bandy, RN are co-founders of Austin Holistic Health, 300 Beardsley Lane. Norma Bell-Bandy is an advanced Rolfer and Movement Teacher in partnership with Brianna Bell-Bandy. Personal consultations: (512) 328-4424, (512) 348-7474, or online at www.BNBRolfingAustin.com

If you’re diabetic, you’re not alone. The 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report by the Centers for Disease Control shows 29.1 million American adults have diabetes – that’s one out of eleven. The statistic is even more alarming for pre-diabetes, a condition marked by higher than normal blood sugar. It’s estimated approximately 86 million (or one out of three) American adults have pre-diabetes. It’s safe to say we, as a nation, are facing a diabetes crisis, and its complications can be staggering. Individuals with diabetes are at increased risk for heart disease, kidney failure, amputation, and blindness, to name just a few serious complications.
The low-fat, fat-free smoking gun. How did we get here? You may be surprised to know the low-fat diet embraced in this country for decades as the way to prevent heart disease or lose weight is one of the main culprits. As consumers sought more “heart-healthy” low-fat foods, manufacturers began developing products that are low-fat and fat-free, but chock full of sugar to make them palatable. The convenience of snacking on sugary foods instead of preparing healthy meals means people are no longer eating as many fresh, nutritious foods – fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, avocados – but turning to highly processed, sugar-laden packaged foods promising to be low in fat and calories. (And, yes, that includes organic, gluten-free, and “natural” snacks.) If you’re on medication to control blood sugar, it’s time to examine closely the food you’re eating. If you’re still on the fence about incorporating more fats into your diet, know that the 2015 Dietary Guidelines removed limits on total fat and dietary cholesterol and considers it “no longer a nutrient of concern.” Rather than focusing on single foods and counting calories, it’s important to adopt a whole-foods approach, cutting out refined carbohydrates and focusing on a wellbalanced diet with plenty of vegetables, healthy fats, and protein. Once this way of eating becomes a lifestyle, you’ll be surprised how your blood sugar levels respond. Min Kwon is a registered dietitian at Inspire Wellness Center with Dr. Trevor Botts, focusing on discovering joy and peace with food and developing a healthy, fulfilling foundation of self-care. Inspire Wellness Center offers free weekly seminars and dinners in January on hormone imbalances, and in February on diabetes and diet. RSVP and info: (512) 800-2026 , www.InspireAustin.com

Going deeper through Soul Integration
CZ $BSPMZO 5IPNQTPO It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma – but perhaps there is a key. – Winston Churchill As you move through life, tests and challenges arise on your soul’s journey. Energy medicine is an organic approach to your multi-faceted existence, assisting change, dispelling thought forms and attachments that no longer serve you, activating and accelerating your potential, bringing you harmony. You have many energy bodies, centers, and special codes at a spiritual level, and unifying them to become fully awake – to participate in life with gusto and contentment – truly is an enigma. When you need assistance, a convergence of modalities designed specifically for you brings the best results.

The time period we’re in right now is special. We’re feeling this deeply, as the consciousness we’re all connected with is pushing out what we can’t take forward, making us own up to what we really have as we uncover pieces of who we are. These pieces are collected like a scavenger hunt. Your individuated soul could have threads of existence in other worlds, be part of different groups in higher dimensions, hold untapped talents, resources, knowledge. You may not always know what the pieces are or what to do with them – yet, there they are. Time usually bonds them together, but when you feel stuck or need a nudge to move forward, Enigmatic Healing is a way to push through and advance your soul.
Most energy medicine practitioners acquire a lot of modalities. That doesn’t make them like an ice cream shop, where you pick a single flavor or a scoop of this and a scoop of that. Everyone’s unique, and what works with one person may not work with another – and what works for you in one session may not be what you need in the next. The artistry of Enigmatic Healing is to crack the enigma, unwrap the mystery, solve the riddle of how to release blocks, unhealthy attachments, and nagging thought forms so your soul is integrated – and divine energy flows through you in a unified field. Carolyn Thompson, CHTP, LMT, is an Energy Medicine practitioner working with new energies from her Soul Monad, bringing a variety of modalities to each session, including Hawaiian lomilomi, ortho-bionomy, shiastu, Chi Nei Tsang, Healing Touch, and more, blending them intuitively for each client. Hurts so good pain is a signal your physiology is readjusting. Stop right now pain’s a signal something’s amiss. Like any symptom, ignoring it causes problems down the line, ingraining incorrect function. Painkillers are about all you’ll get from mainstream docs once it’s determined no serious damage is done. If so, find a hands-on bodywork modality, preferably one dealing with structure, not just pain relief. New modalities can get you right back in the game, realigning whatever knocked you out of it. Ryan Osborne, an Austin-area chiropractor, evolved his practice to work primarily around Advanced Muscle Integration Technique (AMIT), which re-integrates specialized nerve cells responsible for functional stability, strength, and fine motor control. Even better, use these modalities regularly before you get hurt. You’ll perform better in all aspects of your life, which is what real fitness is. Dr. Ryan Osborne, DC, of Enhance Performance Center, studied with the creator of AMIT and is a certified AMIT practitioner, incorporating gentle chiropractic adjustments, AMIT, Nasal Specific technique, and other cutting-edge methods in a natural therapeutic approach to health and performance. Tappin ng the rhythms of Qi by Sharabella Fini What does space mean to you? Inner space, outer, inbetween? On the path to understanding that mystery, you can’t live in a box. To reach the freedom of being, you must be – be one with vital force, Qi. Qi (chee in Chinese) is everywhere, the quintessential energy of nature that, when awakened, liberates and protects. It’s the power behind thoughts, words, emotions, feelings – all you are, within and without. Want to awaken personal Qi? Connect with nature. Trees, grass, and sky are a comforting relief from the unnatural environments of offices, cubicles, malls, and indoor living spaces. Nature, your body, and your environment are alive, connected by the unseen, moving, flowing force of Qi.

Qi is like a musical rhythm. When you’re open and listen, you sense it playing within you. Before words there was sound, expressing the exact vibration at which all cells in your body move in a dynamic dance, maintaining health and balance. A song, even a single note, can touch you so deeply it may move you to tears. This feeling of being open to universal rhythms solidifies your relationship with self, your inner space, reaching into your surroundings and spreading peace and calm in your environment. How is your relationship with self? How calm is your internal landscape? You’ll know when you take time to stop and listen. As you feel changes on the inside, you’ll start to shift and transform on the outside, directly reflecting that energy to your surroundings. Getting clear about sensations and sounds from within brings us back to cultivating vital energy to be in harmony within yourself and in your outer world. One of the most important tools for making this connection is manipulating your Qi through QiGong. In doing so, you balance internal rhythms, and become balanced physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually – you’ll be a witness to the ease, comfort, and uplifting energies of your space. It’s time for a change. Globally and micro-cosmically, let’s build up reserves to tap into for future use. Make 2017 prosperous – commit to a disciplined practice, experiencing the flow of energies through inner, outer, and in-between spaces. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, What career would be best for me? I’ve been a vet tech for many years, and I’m looking for a change. Jill, 30, Las Vegas, NV
full pension unless there is a conflict. It looks like the back child support will work out in your favor. Sananda and Jesus have been guiding you since you were born and your angels are Gabriel and Uriel.
Dear Jill, When you were born, your vibration was to become an MD, but if not, a philanthropist and humanitarian. You are also here to become a writer and author, as well as an independent worker of some kind. You could also become a great artist. Your calling is to have your own small business and make it artistic, interesting, and entertaining. Your teachers are Ashtar, Zadkiel and Melchizedek. Your angel is Gabriel.
Dear Ashtara, I’m struggling on my path, which has been rife with obstacles, especially the last few years. Can my angels help guide me to deal effectively with my challenges? Will kindness, compassion, and reason return? Mary, 53, Austin, TX
Dear Ashtara, I have been working on my husband’s pension and back child support. My husband had health problems when he was in the Navy and health problems after he was discharged. He was told he had asbestosis, so we filed a claim through the V.A. Is there enough evidence in his medical reports to get his claim approved? We have worked on this for quite a while now. Can I expect to get his pension soon and the full amount? On the back child support, what do you see happening? Let me know what to expect. Neilia, Alba, TX Dear Neilia, The authorities will want detailed information regarding the time spent that the asbestos could have been hurting him. They also want X-rays and other tests stating that he actually has absorbed enough asbestos to get paid. It seems that your report may not have enough information. In the long run, you will see what I mean. Thus, continue getting all the records, names of doctors, hospitals, clinics, as well as the number of hours he spent working when he was breathing asbestos. As far as his pension, I can’t see that anyone would not get their

Dear Mary, When life begins to turn on us, we should examine our thoughts and feelings. When I look at you, I see an unbelievably frustrated, confused individual, as well as a genuinely warm and friendly, highly-charged individual. Every day examine yourself. Am I living, breathing and operating to the best of my ability? Or, am I operating from hurt rejections and frustrations? Try always coming from your High Self. Your Highest Master Teacher is Sananda, and your angel is Gabriel.

THE POWER OF CONFLICT 5IF )FBSUXBLFST $MVC XJUI ;BFMJ I have one major blind spot as a relationship coach – I’ve only dated extremely fair men. I hadn’t experienced the visceral reality of darker dynamics, until recently. This is a story about someone who isn’t my boyfriend or lover, but we affect each other’s energy because we’re creatively intimate – and it’s a story both of us agreed would be constructive to share. As collaborators, we match each other’s silliness, enthusiasm, and genuine love for others. Mutual acquaintances warned me he has a dark side, but in my line of work I know full well everyone has a dark side. He endeared himself to me by confiding early on about his issues, including issues with women. He knew he didn’t want to perpetuate the pain of his upbringing. He wanted help. I felt honored to offer it, to confirm he could change. I still believe that, and always will. But those beliefs were tested when the dark side showed its face to me. It started, appropriately enough, on a trip to North Dakota to document the standoff between the Standing Rock Sioux and builders of the Dakota Access Pipeline. I’d always wanted to do such a thing, but didn’t have the courage until I found the support of someone as effusive as him.
Right before we left, a small disagreement foreshadowed a power struggle. On the three-day drive to Standing Rock, tension mounted in the car, and I felt powerless to diffuse it. We both knew the trip would be stressful and we’d have to figure things out on the go, but by our first morning on site, the tender, playful, optimistic partner who’d pledged to support me was gone. Things got worse from there, compounded by bureaucratic delays, bad weather, and mutual naiveté. As the day went on, my confidence shrank until I felt too terrorized to make any decision. An impending snowstorm threated to trap us indefinitely, and that’s when I felt the inexplicable buzz of panic. Even though my project meant so much to me, I would’ve gladly called it off to escape the situation, but that simply wasn’t an option. And here’s the thing – there was no physical violence, nor did I seriously think there would be, but I couldn’t imagine feeling any worse if there had. That’s how painful, I was to learn, emotional abuse can be. Luckily, there was finally an apology. At first, it was just to smooth things over for the sake of the project, but somehow,
after a very tense back-and-forth, we emerged from the house of mirrors together. Upon realizing he was wrestling with his dark side, everything about him transformed. His face, his voice, his posture – it was like a ghost ceased to possess him, at long last. I realized then why abusive relationships are so hard to explain or leave if there’s real love there, real goodness. And usually the violence isn’t introduced until after a bond is forged, because the abuser must identify closely with their partner before “entrusting” them with the depths of their selfloathing.
While that trip began as a nightmare, I don’t doubt it was meant to be. We followed our hearts into a situation over our heads, because we wanted to be in service of a bigger story. What we learned is you can’t question the justice of giants while denying your own inner indifference and inner corruption. We had to engage in internal activism for our explicit, external activism to carry any weight. We were humbled and saddened by the power of the conflict, but that’s not the only power in this story. He’s determined to work on himself and set that example for other men. Change starts with admitting we don’t have control, aren’t always right, and aren’t always fine – and admitting that can make us feel crazy. The next step? Seeing even our lowest lows as a starting point toward the next level of reconciliation. Zaeli is a love coach, here to help bring consciousness and intention to your emotional life.
