RAW 1899a DOWNT a per By Rene Peckham SPECIAL TO DOWNTOWN SAN ANGELO

R

aw 1899 and Downtown San Angelo. It’s as delicious as pairing Cabernet and Black Pepper Steak. The Owners of the new art lounge, Lisa Curry and Nathana Cox, love their location. “Downtown is the heart of this city,” Lisa said, “and having a healthy heart is critical to having a strong city. We’re thrilled to be here and part of the revitalization effort, and we’re a proud member of Downtown San Angelo, Inc.!” Located at 38 North Chadbourne Street, the Raw 1899 Gratitude Opening was in June, and July 1 was the Grand Opening. Since then, thousands of customers have been there to sit, sip, taste, and ponder which piece of art to purchase. Fine wine, beer, and small bites, including Charcuterie -- specialty sliced meats -- are served amid walls covered with beautiful abstract art by artists here and beyond. And, the Facebook reviews tell the story: This is a 5-star place! It all started early last year with a search for an art studio, a place to paint with abandon, where spilled and splattered paint everywhere would be a beautiful thing. In March 2016, they found the current location, instantly fell in love with it, and purchased it. “The fact that this space was Downtown just added to its specialness,” said Nathana. “The energy and creativity of this part of our city is amazing. People of all ages are re-discovering Downtown and appreciating all it has to offer, as well as its historic significance.” Though the owners have not yet found a complete, documented

OWN rfect pairing history of the Raw 1899 space, they have been told it was once a cabinet shop, a liquor store, and a barn, among other things. Also, it was once owned by San Angelo First Baptist Church. “After we purchased the property, the space and our thinking evolved,” Lisa said. “As we chipped away at it, we discovered more of its beauty, and we knew we needed to share it.” On October 27, the two enlarged their vision by purchasing the adjoining space. Their original idea of an art studio had expanded to include an art gallery and lounge. Then, the transformation began from old, dusty, and rough to blackand-gold gorgeousness. Now, it’s a place that always elicits superlatives. The Owners named the place Raw 1899 in honor of its rough-hewn walls and approximate date of origin. The century-old walls, original tin ceiling, and floors made with Concho River sand echo the past. “We especially love our Downtown neighbors -- all of them -- including the San Angelo Performing Arts Center,” said Nathana. “We support the cultural arts and invite all who attend SAPAC performances to visit us before and after the performances when we are open.” Raw 1899 hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays. For more information about upcoming events and art shows, go to www.raw1899.com, or to their Facebook page. Raw 1899 is a member of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce. Mazur By Lucie Hofheins

David Mazur started in the construction business over 35 years ago. He began working on older custom homes in the Santa Rita area where he learned when remodeling older style homes special techniques are required. He learned that for the best results, corners could not be cut. David & his wife Jenice purchased a home on Mackenzie in Santa Rita. The home was previously owned by Dr. Parrish, a San Angelo optometrist. David started his construction projects in the downtown area with a remodel of the building just behind Fuentes Café. While demolition was taking place the crew discovered an oversized sign consisting of a pair of wooden eye glasses. Also uncovered was the optometrist’s name and certificate of accreditation to practice. The optometrist was Dr. Parrish. This was just one of the intriguing experiences that David would encounter as he embarked on downtown revitalization. Mazur Construction has tackled a variety of downtown projects which include “Coney Island” & “The Longhorn” privately owned special venue spaces on south Chadbourne. As David completed the renovation he asked owner, Guy Choate, “what are you thinking of calling the business?” Guy was considering “Lonestar Ballroom.”

Three Gables.

David was stunned as he had just uncovered a façade which had a handmade metal sign which read - Lonestar Ballroom. The sign is now a feature at The Longhorn. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

Chicken in the Rough

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12 Yet another project for Mazur Construction was The Gables at 506 S. Chadbourne. Does anyone remember “Chicken in the Rough” or “McIntyres Restaurant”? During the demolition phase at this site an old “Matheson Ice” Cooler was discovered. David later learned that the Matheson’s who operated an ice company based in San Antonio were in fact related to his family. David also discovered that in their early days both his mother and aunt worked as carhops at this location. Today the Gables, complete with courtyard/patio, is home to Cake Creations by Edwina, while the rear of the building is currently under renovation. In 2015, Mazur’s projects served as one of the catalysts for the development of businesses in the North Chadbourne corridor beginning with the remodel at 322 N. Chadbourne. This building once housed J.T. Welding. In 2016 Burlap & Paisley Primp & Shop, moved into the renovated building. At the January, 2016 ribbon cutting David spoke with Brenda Gunter, President of Downtown San Angelo, Inc. Brenda advised him that the First Baptist Church had a row of buildings on North Chadbourne that they were interested in selling. The two walked over to the buildings, David’s interest was piqued, and the rest is history. All 10 buildings were purchased and work commenced. As construction was launched, the crew discovered original tin ceilings, stone walls, vintage doors with art deco handles, and classic façades. This supplied just the sort of treasures that light a fire under someone with a vision. David states that when it comes to bringing old structures back to life, “I can’t get it out of my system”. In 1908, businesses located on this street included Palace Meat Market, Carter Robert Grocery Store, Three B Electric, Louis Passur Plumbing, Rushing R.A. Grocery Store and San Angelo Metal Works to name a few. Today, four renovated buildings are currently occupied. Raw Gallery 1899 at 38 N. Chadbourne opened its doors in early 2017. Brian Raymond selected the building at 12 N. Chadbourne as his personal residence. The unit is a two level living space that lends itself to downtown walking and exploring and right next door is the “Blue Burro” Art Studio and Gallery, 14 N. Chadbourne, owned and operated by Valerie Hague. A personal fitness center located at 30 N. Chadbourne is slated to begin operation soon. The 8000 square foot building at 18 N. Chadbourne, formerly a barber

college complete with the original black and white checkerboard floor, is available for sale at this location. “Just as some folks like to take old cars and restore them to their original luster, I like to take old buildings and bring them back to life” stated David. While he admits that these kinds of projects take more money to complete that something like a strip mall elsewhere, he loves the concept of a renewed downtown area which will be appealing to both locals and visitors now and in the future.
