Welcome to Wickenburg Welcome to the NTR National Finals issue of The Arena. This edition is filled with useful information to help you enjoy your week in Wickenburg and included is the sale catalog for The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio. At the 2017 NTR National Finals we will be awarding $100,000 to the champion teams in the National 12, the National 9 and the National 8 Finales. To put that in perspective, the $100,000 awarded to the winning teams will tie the USTRC champions' cash award and is second only to the WSTR payoff. The USTRC has been doing this for over 25 years and the WSTR has been working toward their payoff for 11. This is only our third year!

Congratulations to the ropers who have qualified so far and good luck to those at the remaining qualifiers. There are still a few direct entry spots available (limited to 40 direct entry teams). So, if you haven't been able to make a qualifier this season and still want to rope at the Finals for $100,000, you can find the direct entry forms online—those fees are $1,000 per roper. And, if you don't have a partner, don't worry we can draw you one.

The #10 National Finale is new this year. We provided this division for a group of ropers who wanted to compete against fewer teams. Entries in this roping are $1,000 per roper with 80% payback. One wrinkle also new this year, if you win over $1,000 at a #10 Megabucks or #10 National Qualifier, the entry fees to enter the Finale are only $500 per roper.

Remember, ANYONE can enter the NTR National Finals, and there are chances to qualify for the big money Finales right up to the start of those $100,000 dollar ropings.

We are excited to once again host The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio. This year there are 56 performance horses on consignment for every level of roper. We will be erecting the same “Big Top” tent, hanging chandeliers from the ceiling and bringing in the best auctioneer in the business, Steve Friskup. It's guaranteed to be the most-fun a performance horse lover could want.

The Horse Sale preview is Wednesday, March 8, at 3:00 p.m., and The Horse Sale starts at 5:30 p.m., on Thursday, following the National 9 Finale. Again this year, we will offer a sizeable big screen in the sale ring to replay the horse preview while the horses sell.

To help reconcile the standing-room-only problem at The Horse Sale, we will be offering a limited number of VIP tickets. Those will be available for purchase at the Rancho Rio entry office and will guarantee you a premium spot to watch the sale.

aelee and Eskie Heart learned to ride their horses long before they ever learned to ride their bikes.

“I grew up on a ranch and my dad had cattle so the girls never really had a choice,” explained their mom, Corrine Heart. Their dad, Royce, came from a family of roughstock riders but after a few years on the amateur circuits he conceded that wasn't for him. By then, he was taking his two young daughters to rodeos of their own—Maelee entering her first rodeo at just 3 years old.

“We were hauling the girls to junior rodeos so eventually I just started picking up a rope,” explained Royce, who continues to enjoy the sport alongside his daughters today. “Since I was learning with them we became students of the sport together. We've gone to clinics, worked with some of the pros and we read up on it all the time.”

Maelee, now 16, and Eskie, 13, practice hard daily and are beyond passionate about horses and team roping. Both, are wise beyond their years when it comes to their mental game.

“I want to be the best I can be,” Maelee explained. “There's always going to be one person better than you, but you always have to strive to be better than you were yesterday.”

ELEVATED EXPECTATIONS From their home in rural Parshall, N.D., the Hearts are miles from the nearest big city and make practice a part of their daily routine.

For them, practice is all about friendly competition and it's not uncommon for them to be found roping the sled after dark or to hear a little light-hearted bantering about who's better than who.

“We do get aggressive with each other,” Maelee said. “We have high expectations of each other. I want her to beat me, but I'm not going to let her either.”

As sisters, the two share an inseparable bond and their constant stream of communication has helped them overcome obstacles and stick to their goals in and out of the arena.

“We talk during runs all the time,” Eskie explained. “Maelee was heading for me at a roping in Mobridge (South Dakota) and my horse started to go down. She had the steer roped and she looked back and told me to pull up, once she knew we were okay, she kept talking to me and turned off and we still got a time.”

There is no holding back when sisters, Eskie and Maelee Heart, back in the box.

“There's always going to be one person better than you, but you always have to strive to be better than you were yesterday.” - Maelee Heart GIVING BACK At home, the Hearts enjoy spending time at the local Boys & Girls Club of the Three Affiliated Tribes on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, teaching local kids how to swing a rope and rope the dummy.

“They will occasionally contact us and we'll go to their events to teach the kids,” Corrine said. “It's really an emotional and spiritual experience for us as a family. It really makes us sit back and be thankful and grateful for everything we have and the opportunity we have to do what we do. Our roping family consists of extended family members and they also come volunteer with us. We truly enjoy helping anyone, of any age, who is interested in roping and riding and who might not have the resources."

ESCAPE TO ARIZONA For the last two years Royce and Corrine have home schooled their daughters and this year it allowed them the opportunity to escape the frigid winter weather and head south for an extended stay. From their winter base at Rancho Rio in Wickenburg, the team roping trio has picked up five buckles (and counting) and two saddles between them

in less than one month and are already starting to think about how they can spend even more time in Arizona in the future.

“I would love to live down here,” Eskie exclaimed. “We laugh, because it's eat, sleep and rope for us. This is the best place we could be.”

Two years ago, Eskie won her first-ever trophy saddle heeling at Rancho Rio. She was only 11.

“That morning they lined up all of the saddles and there was one with a pink seat,” she recalled. “I told my mom I was going to win that. In one of the first rounds my header called for the steer right as my horse turned around in the box. I caught up and we got a time.”

Eskie was heeling for Zach Milne and the duo came back to the short round 23rd high call leaving a very slim chance that they could finish in the top three and take home saddles. Despite the odds, Eskie didn't get discouraged.

“I knew it was a low-numbered roping so I kept telling myself anything could happen. I doubled and then I just watched. I was hoping people would try to be fast and drop out and they did. We finished second and I won the saddle.”

“I like to make goals, short-term and long-term, and that's what you keep pushing towards.” - Eskie Heart That same year the Hearts had the opportunity to rope in the Mike Cervi Memorial Pro-Am roping in Casa Grande.

“Eskie roped with Erich Rogers, Maelee with Dustin Bird and I roped with Aaron Tsinigine,” Royce recalled. “We all came up empty handed but that was such a cool experience.”

This year, no one will be leaving The Team Roping Capital of the World empty handed.

As of press time, Maelee's 2017 Arizona highlight was a toss-up between topping the #11 roping heeling at Downtown Arena in January and being the only girl to enter the chute dogging at the Tohono O'Odahm Nation Junior Rodeo.

Royce, while he has won saddles and prizes in other associations, picked up his first NTR buckle at Rancho Rio in January and followed it up in a big way, winning two trophy saddles at the Big NTR Rancho Rio Qualifier in early February.

“After a roping, it generally gets pretty heated on the way home,” Corrine laughed. “Most of the time it's everyone saying how they could have done better and analyzing what went wrong. I can usually tell what they did, and sometimes they didn't do anything wrong, it just

didn't work out. It can get tough trying to keep their spirits up because everyone is just so competitive.”

BIG DREAMS & SETTING GOALS The Hearts have taught their girls not only to dream big but to always follow those dreams, and both teens have set the bar high for themselves.

“We want to rope at the INFR (Indian National Finals Rodeo) and be the first all-girl team at the WNFR,” Eskie said. Her game plan?

“I like to make goals, short-term and long-term, and that's what you keep pushing towards,” she explained. “My long-term goal is to be roping with the pros. You have to go until your idols become your rivals.”

In the meantime, her short-term goal—to win another saddle—has an added incentive.

“My grandma promised me a golf cart,” she laughed.

With their consistent, aggressive roping style and remarkable determination, both girls will be topping the leader boards in route to their next big win in no time.

It doesn't get much better than winning a new RAM truck on your 18th birthday and Skylar Gishie, of Holbrook, Ariz., can tell you that first hand.

“I didn't know I was going to win until they actually announced my name,” he recalled. “I can't even tell you, I was so speechless.”

After getting rained out on its originally scheduled date, 851 teams showed up to rope at the La Fiesta Truck Roping at Rancho Rio on February 28.

The high call team of Nick Black and Marcus Begay held on to their lead and took home a sweet $8,140. In total $92,330 in cash was paid out over two ropings.

ALL ABOUT HORSEPOWER As the sun set to the west, Gishie was trying to collect himself with a swarm of family and friends circling him in the main arena.

Immediately, he reached over and clung to the neck of his buckskin head horse.

“I was thanking my horse for the win,” Gishie explained. “Eighty percent of that has to go to my horses. Without them I wouldn't be able to do what I do."

Coincidentally, he sold the buckskin gelding he calls Zorro to his grandpa (Roger Gishie Sr.) back in November and had borrowed him back for the day.

“My grandpa taught me to rope and he hauls me everywhere, so it was really cool to have him there. He has always gone out of his way to help me stay mounted and be better than I was yesterday.”

Gishie's no. 1 mount is a bay horse he calls Diesel.

“I rode my other horse earlier in the day and he started to get a little bit tired,” he explained. “I didn't jump on Zorro until my last two partners. I just thought I'd switch and it worked out.”

A senior at Holbrook High School, Gishie is looking to qualify for his first National High School Finals rodeo before he heads off to college where he plans to continue to rodeo.

“I think college rodeo is a great way to take my roping to the next level. I'd like to go to school somewhere in the Valley, but I haven't decided yet.”

Gishie and his high school team roping partner, Cody Lansing, are currently sitting 15th in the standings which will give them a good start heading into the spring rodeos.

“I finished 7th in the team roping my sophomore year, but haven't qualified for Nationals. I'm really hoping we can get it done this year.”

Although Lansing is only a freshman, the two have roped together for years.

“They live in Cortez, Colo., but they have a place in Queen Creek. His dad has helped me a lot. I'll go spend the weekend with them and practice.”

The La Fiesta roping wasn't the first time Gishie has come close to winning a truck.

“This was my third time I've ever come this close. I wasn't really nervous. I just focused on roping my steers with my partners and doing my job. It finally came together.”

With call backs at the 48th and 16th positions Gishie had plenty of time between runs.

“I just stayed in the back and walked my horse and tried to stay calm.

I really tried not to think about what was going on in the arena. I just stayed focused on what I needed to do.”

His best advice if you find yourself in the short round of a truck roping, “Don't get the truck in your head. Just focus on roping your steers. Just let your roping do the talking.”

DISPUTES: In the event a dispute should arise as to a particular defect which should have been, but was not announced, the buyer has the right to have a veterinarian examine the horse he had purchased to determine if the horse suffers from the defect. This examination is to be made and The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio is to be notified within 72 hours from the end of the sale in which the horse was sold. If the purchaser's veterinarian determined the horse to have the alleged defect, the Sales Management as agent shall appoint a veterinarian of its choice to determine if the horse has the defect and if the defect was present at the time of sale. His or her decision will be final. If the veterinarian determines that the defect was present at the time of the sale and it was not announced, the sale of said horse shall be null and void and the consignor must pay entry fee and commission as contained in the consignors contract, and the cost of the veterinary examination and veterinary work performed on the horse as a result of the said defect. The sale of the said horse is valid and enforceable and purchaser assumes all cost and examination and treatment.

RIGHTFUL REJECTION: If the buyer rightfully rejects the animal in the manner stated above and within the time provided. The animal will be returned by the buyer to the consignor will refund to the buyer the full purchase price of the animal.

TITLE: Title to and risk of loss passes to the buyer when the hammer drops.

BURKE MOORE

Burke Moore permanently resides in Marana, Ariz., but the explosive southpaw heeler leads a fiery lifestyle outside the roping pen, spending his days as a blasting engineer for M.C. Donegan—a company based out of Bluffdale, Texas. Moore covers mostly Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas, but has done some blasting work in other states as well.

Although he attended high school in Flagstaff, Moore fell in love with the Sonoran Desert lifestyle after spending time in the Phoenix and Tucson areas when his company sent him to the Catalina Mountains. There, he was assigned projects like flattening a mountaintop to allow for a new RitzCarlton hotel as well as preparations for the Stone Canyon Golf Course in Oro Valley.

“Controlled blasting is all about math,” Moore said. “We know exactly what it's going to do before it happens. We have done blasting in between highways and railroad tracks, where we can't damage either one. We can blast right up next to structures without vibrating the foundation of that building. It's all very precise.”

Outside of his normal territory, Moore has worked on projects like Wolf Creek pass in Colorado and Beartooth pass in Montana—which even earned his company industry awards.

Not long after relocating to Arizona, Moore met Erika Barre', a school teacher who had made her way to Arizona to escape the high cost of living in her home state. The two are scheduled to tie the knot this June.

“We're getting married in a little town called Tubac, Ariz., which is a golf resort,” Moore said. “It's an old cattle ranch between Tucson and Nogales, Mexico. We've only been engaged for three years, so we figured it was time to go ahead and get married.”

Growing up, Moore was often horseback alongside his dad who was a horse broker in the West Texas and New Mexico areas. However, his true passion through high school and college was on the back of a 1,500-pound bucking bull. After competing on the rodeo team at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, Moore decided to try his luck on the professional circuit. Soon after he started he was involved in a wreck that resulted in a severely broken right arm. Following the injury he began team roping more often and focused on heeling with his left hand.

“I'm left handed naturally and I had tried roping with my left hand all my life,” Moore said. “I had always played with ropes with either hand but I didn't make heeling left handed a true habit until I came to Arizona in 2009, and really started roping a lot more.”

While Moore doesn't see any challenges in his left-handedness personally, he does think it is a little more difficult to find partners to rope with. Lamenting that many ropers see it as a disadvantage. But he's always managed to find his way to the pay window. One of his most memorable wins was at Yost Events’ Arizona Bowl roping in 2011 when he and his header, Kerry Black, won $10,000.

“Arizona is the greatest place to live because we get to rope year-round,” Moore finished. “In the summer we rope at night and we can literally rope all winter long. When I went to Texas for college I thought for sure I would stay there. Now, being back in Arizona, I think this will always be home.”

PROPOSAL

One lucky roper taking home a new RAM truck wasn't the only memorable moment at the La Fiesta Truck Roping at Rancho Rio on February 28. After the first 300 teams had ran their first steer the King of Country came over the loud speaker singing his 1992 hit, “I Cross My Heart,” from the classic movie, “Pure Country”—but the George Strait lyrics were no coincidence.

Erik Venegas, who was roping with Ramon Morales, had asked if he could roll his team so he could propose to his partner's daughter, and his long-time girlfriend Daisy Morales, in the arena before the drag.

“I was completely shocked, I had absolutely no idea,” Daisy said. “My aunt had said let's go down to the end of the arena so we can video their run. I heard “I Cross My Heart,” and thought it was such a coincidence that was playing while Erik and my dad were roping. It's one of our favorite songs. Then, I heard Ty say my name and call me into the arena.

I still didn't understand what was happening. After that, Erik got off his horse, reached into his pocket and got down on one knee.”

WITHOUT A HITCH “I knew she would say yes,” Venegas said. “I was still very nervous.”

The 23-year-old, Lavine, Ariz., cowboy had every detail of his proposal planned and it went off without a hitch. It was back in November that he first asked her parents for their permission. Then, he planned to be roping with her father and coordinated with the office staff on their draw number and had them cue the perfect song—all the while, keeping it a huge secret.

“Daisy and I met at a roping, and she's always there for me when I'm competing,” Venegas explained. “So I thought that was the perfect place to propose. I wanted to do something different.”

SHORT ROUND BOUND Venegas and his future father-in-law were clean on that first run and ended up making it back to the short round. They didn't have much luck there, but he says he still came out a winner.

“I was so nervous on my first steer because I had all the pressure of proposing and I really wanted to catch,” he laughed. “After she said yes, I figured I was good for the rest of the day, no matter what happened with the roping.”

Daisy confirmed the story of how they met—although, she admits he had caught her eye even before.

“I first saw him at a dance, but we didn't actually meet. The next weekend we were at a roping in Litchfield Park, and he was with a friend of mine. We started talking and have been together ever since.”

The newly-engaged couple had a lot of family with them at Rancho RIo to help celebrate.

“I thought we were supposed to be celebrating my mom's birthday after the roping,” Daisy laughed. “The party ended up being for us.”

While they still don't have a date set, it's possible there just might be another kind of La Fiesta at Rancho Rio sometime next year.

“We haven't picked a date or a location,” Daisy said. “But we both have big families so it will probably have to be somewhere outdoors.”
