giving back to our community at a time of need By Jimmy Galvan For 1000 Degrees Pizzeria, community comes first and that was no better apparent but in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey’s arrival in the Katy area. While first responders worked to rescue those flooded in their homes and residents started the cleanup process left in the storm’s wake, 1000 Degrees Pizzeria and its owners John Bock, Travis and Elizabeth Masterson, managers and staff stepped into action. “I don’t know how to do anything else to help out these victims but I thought if I could feed a crew of 30 or 40 people that were working on a house, then that is just a small piece of giving back to this community,” Bock said. “We just thought that if people could eat some pizza, that might bring a bit of normalcy to their life. “A lot of people thought the world was ending at that time,” Bock said. Methodist West Hospital, Memorial Hermann Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, the National Guard, Police, Fire and Rescue crews, area schools, First Methodist Church, Second Baptist Church and many more were helped and fed by the owners and staff of 1000 Degrees Pizzeria during this difficult time. “We had people that came in just looking for water and so at that point we purchased cases of water to donate to anyone that needed it.” Several community volunteers including Carmen Valderrama, Michelle Feild with The Katy Times, Katy 360, Katy Fort-Bend Foodies, and the Houston Chronicle also stepped up to deliver pizzas to volunteers and flooded families. Bock grew up on Avenue D in Katy and his contacts with people helped fuel the drive to lend a helping hand when this community sorely needed the help. Because 1000 Degrees Pizzeria works ahead of time to

prepare its dough, the business had prepared on the date of Hurricane Harvey’s arrival for possible business the days after. “When we make our dough, we are thinking three days out so we had already rolled for Sunday and Monday. So by the time we opened on Tuesday (after Harvey), we had dough for Sunday and Monday that was ready to be cooked.” “Since the dough is made from scratch, we were prepared to serve this community that had welcomed his business with open arms,” Bock said. “We knew when we opened up on Tuesday there would be people that wouldn’t be able to pay because of what they were going through,” Bock said. “We were already getting phone calls about people wanting to know if we could donate any pizzas. “We just decided then to just give it away,” Bock said. “We put it out on Facebook to come and get some pizza, it was on us. And we had a line at the door almost immediately and people were telling us they could pay for it.” It was then that Bock decided that for those who could pay, that money would be placed into a donation fund to help Harvey victims. It was during that time that Bock found out that one of his employees had been working at the pizzeria but was constantly being sent pictures from family members of the rising water at his house. “There he was working and watching his house flood,” Bock said. “We ended up taking a portion of the donated money and gave it to him to help his family.” The pizzeria ran out of food at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. On Wednesday, 1000 Degrees Pizzeria opened with big batches of dough made and ran out of food at 6:30 p.m. To date, Bock is still donating pizza to workers that are helping work on houses that were damaged by Hurricane

Harvey. At 1000 Degrees Pizzeria, the customer is the chef. Create your own authentic 10” Neapolitan Pizza, choosing from over 30 fresh and delicious toppings for one low price. “All of our topping are fresh and will always be fresh,” Bock said. “We don’t put any additives into anything. Everything we do is done from scratch unlike any of our competition.” 1000 Degrees Pizza, a fast-casual American spin on authentic, hand-tossed Neapolitan pizza. 1000 Degrees serves personalized, made-to-order authentic Neapolitan pizza. Each pizza starts with fresh, never frozen, hand-tossed dough, created with authentic Neapolitan flour and available in both a personal 10” and sharable 14” sizes. Guests then choose to create their own pizza or order one of the 1000 Degrees favorites. The Katy 1000 Degrees location is the third location in the greater Houston area, and is owned and operated by local entrepreneur Bock of Bock Restaurants LLC, along with his wife Brenda and friends Travis and Elizabeth Masterson. Bock has worked in the restaurant industry for 22 years and currently works in real estate, while his wife Brenda teaches in the Early Childhood Autism program in the Katy Independent School District. Elizabeth Masterson is an insurance agent and Travis Masterson is a disabled veteran of the U.S. Army. “In 2014, my friend Rob was leaving his job at a restaurant in Stafford and I told him to not take another job and let’s do the restaurant that we always wanted to do,” Bock said. “We started to focus on pizza because we both really liked to cook pizza and we found this pizzeria in New Jersey called 1000 Degrees. We liked everything about it and fell in love with it immediately.” Robert Rankin, an experienced restaurant manager in the area, works as director of operations. As longtime residents of the Katy area, the entrepreneurs were drawn to the brand’s authenticity, proprietary oven and devotion to serving fresh, high quality ingredients. The entrepreneurial team is set to open two more 1000 Degrees locations in Sugar Land and Spring later this year. “We’re thrilled to open our first 1000 Degrees location in our hometown of Katy. We want to give back to this great community and we look forward to opening our doors and sharing our love for premium fast-casual pizza with the residents of Katy,” said Bock. “1000 Degrees offers some of the best tasting specialty pizzas, and guests are sure to appreciate our fresh, hand-made dough and quality toppings.” Customizing a 1000 Degrees pizza is truly a unique experience, as guests can choose to top theirs with any of the more than 35 high quality cheeses, sauces, meats, vegetables

8 / K a t y To d a y / N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 7

and other toppings all for one flat price. While choosing their toppings, customers are guided down an assembly line of pizza consultants to create a pizza that is totally unique to them. Outside of the build your own option, there are more than 12 varieties of specialty pizzas including favorites like The Smokey Pollo, also known as Barbecue Bourbon Chicken, which features sweet and smoky bourbon barbecue sauce, roasted chicken, red onion, pineapple, shredded Grande brand mozzarella and blue cheeses, and The Philly, which is a cheese steak pizza topped with thinly sliced rib-eye, caramelized Spanish onions, balsamic glaze, shredded Grande brand mozzarella and provolone cheeses. Pizzas are then fired to perfection at 1000 degrees in a custom, handmade, revolving Neapolitan brick oven in just two minutes. Unlike traditional Neapolitan pizza, which has a slightly undercooked center and requires a fork and knife to eat, 1000 Degrees Neapolitan Pizza has fused this classic style with American flare. The result is a thin crust pizza that maintains the light and airy appeal of a Neapolitan style pizza. “Our wings are also a favorite among customers,” said Bock. “I am born and raised in Katy and graduated from Katy in 1997,” Bock said. “I consider everyone that works at the Katy store as family. I am currently working on opening 3 more stores in the next 5 years.”

A Message with a Purpose By Tom Behrens Doug Hanson keeps people motivated with powerful words, as new book, TV series loom. Doug Hanson said he prefers to call himself a transformation coach rather than motivational speaker because motivation can be temporary. But real transformation can change someone’s life forever. Hanson, who has co-authored a new book called “Ready, Set, Go,” which will be released Nov. 30, is a longtime resident of Katy. He graduated from Katy High School in 1980, left for college and moved back a few years later with his wife and children. “We wanted our kids to be near their grandparents,” Hanson said. “Katy seemed like a great place because I had a good, strong history there, and my wife loved it here.” Out of college, he worked for a production company that helped the then new sports network ESPN develop material for its programs. After that, he worked for Toshiba and then Hewlett Packard. Working in sales and in HP’s executive leadership program, Hanson said he began to get requests for him to share some thoughts and points at companies who bought from him. “Before I knew it, my phone started ringing and people were calling who I didn’t know saying, ‘I hear you’re a motivational speaker.’” he said. “Some would say, ‘I hear you’re a sales coach.’ Some would say, ‘I hear you’re a leadership trainer.’ And I’d say, ‘No, I’m a computer salesman, or I’m a manager of a computer team.” On the corporate fast-track at HP, Hanson had a good salary, a great benefits package, an expense account and a company car,

but he felt called to be a full-time speaker. He founded Doug Hanson Performance Group in 1995 and has been speaking ever since across the nation and world about motivation, teambuilding, peak performance, dealing with change and more. His other services include consulting, assessments, workshops, teambuilding and leadership training. Hanson served as Director of Campaign Culture for Ben Carson’s 2016 presidential bid. He said the role was unique to their campaign. “My job was to interview Ben and to understand his philosophies and his principles and then make sure that we were communicating to all the people in the field consistently things that reinforced things that we stood for,” Hanson said. “Ready, Set, Go” will focus on sharing success principles with real-life examples and applications. Hanson is also currently busy with several other projects including a 15-episode TV series titled “Become Greater with Doug Hanson” that will air this fall on The Success Network and other platforms like Apple TV and Roku. He plans to release another book in 2018 or 2019 called “Play Full Out,” which will focus on living life to the fullest. “[The book’s] concept is you can’t have a good marriage if you’re just going through the motions,” Hanson said. “You can’t have a career that is successful if you’re doing just enough not to get fired, but that’s how most people are living their lives.” Another book coming out in 2018 called “MetaMorePhosis” will help business leaders improve their company cultures and will be based on an online training program with the same name. The most popular concept he said he talks about is the

One of the Top Rated courses in the area, importance of having a to-be list in addition to having a to-do list. More than 20 years ago, one of his mentors gave him the idea. Today, he said some of the items on his own list include being a man of faith and bringing honor to his family. Hanson said he is proud that he took a chance in leaving his corporate career to follow what he felt what his calling. “That’s what I try to get people do all the time, not necessarily open your own business or anything, but follow your path,” he said. “Wherever you’re at, play full out because whatever you’re doing right now, if you play full out now, it will lead to something better later.”

Pet sitters provide special care at home

By Trish Johnson

If you call yourself a “pet parent” rather than a pet owner, if your pet has more clothes than you do, or if your pet shuns the doghouse in favor of the comparative opulence of your bedroom (or even your bed), then you understand the mindset of folks who seek the best pet accommodations they can afford. It should come as no surprise, then, to discover the hustle-and-bustle which passes as peoples’ lives these days has spawned a relatively new profession: pet care specialists. Taking the common practice of letting a loving, responsible neighbor care for pets in lieu of boarding those same pets at an unfamiliar location one step further, pet sitting has become a fast-growing pet care alternative. Three professional Katy-area pet sitters recently joined Barking Life Pet Concierge founder and owner Elizabeth Maklary for a story-swapping session as they shared anecdotes and the pros and cons of their job. “It’s really rewarding when you get the pets to trust you,” said pet sitter Lacy Magee who, at 26, is already a five-year veteran in the pet care field. According to Maklary, having pets cared for in the owner’s home appeals to a wide section of pet owners.“It’s difficult to board elderly pets,” Maklary said, “because they often have health issues, including blindness and hearing loss. Those pets, for instance, almost have to be cared for in their own homes. “But pet sitting is becoming more and more popular for a

variety of reasons. It’s one way to have your pets cared for in the most stress-free way, as well as having your home taken care of,” she added. But even the best-laid plans, as they say, often go astray and that includes plans of the pet sitting variety. “Just when I think we’ve had about everything I can think of happen to us, something new happens,” Maklary laughed. Take the time Magee was caring for a client’’ well-loved but diabetic dog and accidentally dropped the vial containing insulin, which then shattered on the tile floor. “I called Liz [Maklary] in panic,” Magee said. “It was a weekend of course, and Liz started calling all the emergency vet offices and pharmacies.” “I was being quoted $200, $300 for insulin,” Maklary said, picking up the story. “I finally found a pharmacy who had the insulin for just $20.” The recent (and historic) floods in south Texas added a new wrinkle in the job fabric, Maklary said. “We had clients during the floods,” pet sitter Alison Goodson said. “We were having to find new routes through flooded streets to get to those pets as the water rose and the pet owners couldn’t get home.” Those pets, Maklary emphasized, were a priority. “We can’t just say we can’t go,” added Goodson. “And that’s another good reason to hire a pet sitting agency,” Maklary noted. “We have backup; backup sitters and backup plans.”

N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 7 / K a t y To d a y / 1 3

Most times, however, pet sitting goes quite smoothly, the sitters agreed, with pet and owner idiosyncracies the only bumps in the road. “We’ve had clients whose pet was at the vet’s, recuperating from surgery, who had us cook food, cut up grapes and such, and deliver it to the vet every day,” Maklary said. “Then, there was the client who was at the port, ready to board his cruise ship the next day, who’d forgotten his passport. We were the only ones with access to his house, so he called us to find his passport and have it overnighted to him.” “Don’t forget about Clover the chihuahua,” Magee added. “We cooked him steak every day and he had to have his plate with the meat, cheese and such laid out in a certain way. Otherwise, he wouldn’t eat it.” “You know, asking your friend or neighbor to help out with your pet is one thing, but we’ll do things you don’t feel like you ask your neighbor to do,” Goodson said, “like cleaning up those special little pet ‘accidents’.” Barking Life Pet Concierge, Maklary’s company, offers a wide range of services for an equally wide range of prices. According to the pet sitter extraordinaire, clients are hiring professional pet sitters to do everything from exercise and/ or feed their housebound pets during the workday to caring for one or more pets while living in the pet’s home during the owner’s absence. A once-a-day visit with one pet runs about $22, with prices rising and as the number of pets and/or services increase. Pet owners can choose services such as administering subcutaneous injections of medicine to having pets driven to and from doggie daycare, having pet supplies delivered to the pet’s home or living with (which sometimes means sleeping with) one or more pets for days while the owner is absent. Just as important as the services offered are the pets who receive the services which, in Maklary’s case, can range from the usual dogs and cats to birds, reptiles and fish. “We call Lacy ‘the parrot lady’,” Maklary grinned. “But Lori [Haines] cared for a flock of chickens one lady kept for the eggs and helped re-home them during the flood. I’ve also cared for bearded dragons, soft-shelled turtles, pet crabs and pot-bellied frogs. “But no snakes,” she emphasized. “I don’t want snakes.” Barking Life also offers adjunct services such as house sitting, plant care and even offers to bring clients their house key should the client get locked out. (“We’re cheaper than a locksmith,” laughed Maklary, who said she keeps client’s keys locked in a key safe which is locked in her office.) “We were hired once to keep an eye on a few houses which a builder had recently completed but weren’t occupied yet,”

1 4 / K a t y To d a y / N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 7

Magee said. “We’d check on them, make sure the windows and doors were locked, no water leaks, just a general checkover. But when I got to one of the houses, it was obvious a vagrant had set up camp in the backyard, complete with tent. Not what I was expecting,” she laughed. After Magee made her way to the development’s sales office, a phone call brought the local authorities who escorted the squatter and his tent out of the area. “I once teamed up with another sitter to care for a client’s five dogs and a foster dog,” Haines said. “They were supposed to be confined in separate spaces because they didn’t get along, but when I got there, all five dogs met me at the door. “All the doggy gates were open, and water was running in the bathtub. I was sure I was going to find the other sitter hurt, injured or worse, laying somewhere in that house,” she continued. “But, nope. The little terrier foster dog had opened all the gates and turned on the bath water.” “I think it’s easy to say why we do this,” Maklary concluded. “We do this for the gratitude we receive. Everyone, including the pets, always seem so grateful.” “That’s true,” said Haines. “When you walk in and the animal runs to you and wraps his ‘arms’ around you, that’s a really great feeling.”
