Founder’s Log: Stardate 2016 Three years ago, we set the controls for the heart of the sun, like some underappreciated Danny Boyle film, and put our trust in the cosmic echoes that signaled the need for a dedicated SciFi festival. Along the way we’ve presented yearly films through our Other Worlds Orbiter screening series, established the Mary Shelley Award to encourage the involvement and representation of women in genre filmmaking (the only award of its kind), and created The Dan O’Bannon Award, a filmmaking grant named after one of SciFi’s truly original thinkers and a classic self-starter. I spent much of this year traveling with my own short (ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE—you saw it last year), as far as London and Lund, Sweden. I’ve seen all sorts of festivals, big and small, genre and general, each with their own spin on ‘the show.’ Every time I saw a great film I thought “I can’t wait to show this to our audience.” Because you are the best audience in the world. That excitement is why I started the festival in the first place. And screening classics like BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, DARK STAR and ISLAND OF LOST SOULS feels like sharing a beloved film with a friend. Don’t tell George Lucas, but my favorite childhood film was Corman’s ‘Magnificent Seven in Space.’ And it is an honor to decorate Sybil Danning with our inaugural Defender of the Universe Award. It is with that same enthusiasm we also add Under Worlds Austin to the mix. SciFi and Horror share the same heritage - they put voice to mankind facing the unknown. If SciFi reflects the piercing light of imagination and research, Horror sinks into the shadows of fear and doubt. If SciFi can transport you to other worlds of possibility, Horror often reveals the darkness just under the world we know. So, welcome to Other Worlds Austin 2016. We have anime, robots, aliens, time travel, virtual reality, ghosts, documentaries, cursed furniture, and Bela Lugosi. And we have a dedicated team that works all year to put this on, a team I rely on for their support, their taste, and their wiliness to climb aboard starships, headed for the sky. Enjoy.

defender of the universe first night gala

Battle Beyond the Stars Space Opera

Jimmy T. Murakami | USA | 105 min Dec 1st, 7:42 (Alpha)

Writer: John Sayles Cast: Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, John Saxon, George Peppard & Sybil Danning A young farmer (Richard Thomas) sets out to recruit mercenaries to defend his peaceful planet, which is under threat of invasion by the evil tyrant Sador (John Saxon) and his armada of aggressors. Among the mercenaries are a Space Cowboy (George Peppard), a spacegoing truck driver from Earth (Morgan Woodward); Gelt, a wealthy but experienced assassin looking for a place to hide (Robert Vaughn); and Saint-Exmin, a Valkyrie warrior looking to prove herself in battle (Sybil Danning). The film was legendarily pitched as ‘Magnificent Seven in Space.’ Produced by Roger Corman in the wake of the Star Wars cash-grab phenomena, the film also features one of the first scores from James Horner, and the below-the-line talents of Gale Ann Hurd and James Cameron.

Defender of the Universe, Sybil Danning

The Defender of the Universe Award honors a cinematic star or mentor whose heroic actions help mold us into the future humans we aspire to be. In stories that examine what it means to be human, often in the face of rapidly developing technology, alternate histories or multi-galaxial space sagas where we are just one of the many players in a political landscape, SciFi heroes teach us who we are and what we value. In addition to BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, Austrian-born actress and model Sybil Danning starred in a number of classic ‘B movies’ such as HERCULES, HOWLING II, JUNGLE WARRIORS, MALIBU EXPRESS, CHAINED HEAT, REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS, and AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON. She appeared on television in SIMON & SIMON, THE FALL GUY and V (The TV Series). More recently she appeared in Tarantino’s GRINDHOUSE, as one of the Werewolf Women of the SS and Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN.

OMG, I’m a Robot?! (North American Premiere)

Technology with Unexpected Consequences Tal Goldberg, Gal Zelezniak | Israel | 75 min Dec 2nd, 7:00 (Alpha), 7:30 (Beta)

Writers: Tal Goldberg, Gal Zelezniak Cast: Yotam Ishay, Hili Yalon, Tzahi Grad & Rob Schneider Danny’s girlfriend Noa leaves him because he is “not manly enough.” Sad and lonely, he slits his wrists only to discover he is not a man at all, he is a robot—an indestructible war machine. Moreover, his girlfriend did not leave him—she was kidnapped by a mysterious organization searching for war machine like Danny. With the help of Goldschmidt, his overly macho boss, and Robo-Joseph, a small Jewish R2D2-like robot with a lot of “hutzpah,” he goes out on a journey to save his girl and also figure out why exactly is he a robot?! Living in a country full of conflict, the directors of the film play at pure escapism, but end up making a film that is stealthily deep. With war and death a daily commodity, how does one live as a pacifist? And can one remain true to themselves when they find out they don’t even know they are? OMG, I’M A ROBOT?! is a film about remaking yourself, or rather reprogramming yourself, to face the expectations of another person. Tal Goldberg has enjoyed a long career as a scriptwriter for international TV stations, YouTube channels and videogames. Gal Zelezniak created the Offscreen web series. OMG, I’M A ROBOT?! is the feature debut for both of them.

Virtual Revolution (Texas Premiere) Cyberpunk Noir

Guy-Roger Duvert | France | 92 min Dec 3rd, 7:50 (Beta)

Writer: Guy-Roger Duvert Cast: Mike Dopud, Jane Badler, & Jochen Hägele Paris 2047: Half of the population is now permanently online, living their lives in a variety of game worlds, and leaving the reality behind. Private Investigator/Assassin-for-hire Nash finds himself employed by one of the corporations that build these virtual worlds to track down a group of terrorists who are killing the players (for real) from inside the game. When he infiltrates the terror cell, he finds that the lines between innocent and guilty are far blurrier and maybe the entire ‘game’ is rigged against the human population. Cut from the same DNA as BLADE RUNNER, Duvert’s film explodes with ideas, mostly about how we lose ourselves in our devices. The terrorists in VIRTUAL REVOLUTION are like most radicals, convinced of their own nobility and willing to do whatever they find necessary to achieve their ends. The corporations should also be recognizable as the pursuit of profit has always curbed the law somewhat, if only the moral one. Revolution is never simple. Guy-Roger Duvert has been working as a successful film composer in Hollywood for several years, scoring several feature films and blockbusters trailers (TRANSFORMERS 3, GREEN LANTERN, PROMETHEUS). His fantasy short CASSANDRA played 82 festivals and garnered 47 awards.

We Go On (Texas Premiere) Paranormal Exploration

Jesse Holland, Andy Mitton | USA | 90 min Dec 3rd, 7:40 (Alpha)

Writers: Jesse Holland, Andy Mitton Cast: Clark Freeman, Annette O’Toole, John Glover & Jay Dunn Miles Grisson lives in fear. His trepidation prevents him from even driving a car. But armed with a large sum of money, he decides to overcome his terror, not by facing it, but by offering a reward to anyone who can prove that after we die… we go on. When Grissom narrows down his leads to the three least crazy sounding—a scientist, a medium, and a world traveler with a ‘magic box’—he teams up with the unlikeliest of partners for his search, his mom. When Miles finally makes contact with a dead airline mechanic desperate to reconnect with the love of his life (who is still alive), the film treats us one of the most complete portraits of a ghost since Demi Moore spun her potter’s wheel. In WE GO ON, nothing is as simple as dead and alive, haunted and exorcised, and good and bad, which makes for one of the most thought-provoking films about the afterlife in recent years. Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton’s thriller YELLOWBRICKROAD premiered at the Slamdance International Film Festival in 2010. In 2013, they contributed a segment to the horror anthology film CHILLING VISIONS: 5 SENSES OF FEAR, which premiered on Chiller TV. Mitton is a sound designer, musician, and composer, most recently writing music and lyrics for THE GIFT OF NOTHING, commissioned and produced by the Kennedy Center. Holland is a motion graphics and visual effects artist. He created all the graphics for the Jim Hensonproduced show GOOD MORNING TODAY and designed international branding for such films as ARBITRAGE and ROBOT & FRANK.

Geoff Redknap, before turning to writing and directing, spent years working in the makeup and special effects departments of features such as DEADPOOL, WATCHMEN, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS and both the FINAL DESTINATION and X-MEN series, as well as TV shows such as THE X-FILES and FEAR THE WALKING DEAD. Dan O’Bannon AwarD The Other Worlds Austin Dan O’Bannon Filmmaker Award, a $1,500 grant for the production or post-production of a short film, is gifted to a filmmaker whose proposed short film follows our mission statement’s explanation of a phenomenal SciFi film: a great story that isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of the audience, thrilling them both visually and intellectually. Statement from Diane O’Bannon (Dan’s widow): “When Dan O’Bannon and John Carpenter made DARK STAR they were ambitious students at USC. They both loved old horror and science fiction films which in the 1970s were despised as B movies. They were fired up to make what they wanted to see. It was personal. When USC Cinema Department told them their film would never be seen ‘on the circuit’ because it went 10 minutes over the time limit, they snatched the film away from the school and spent the next five years scraping up the money and doing the work to complete it. As we now know, this little film did lead to big things for both of them, but in ways they could not predict, in ways they never expected, and it took years for that future success to manifest itself. The steps that led these young men to success were ambition, a desire to make films they wanted to see, a wise and reasonable disregard for the ‘rules’ and perseverance beyond imagining. Dan’s advice to you would be: simply do it. Bring your vision into the world with energy. Your actions will bring results, even if they are not the kind you are hoping for or expecting.”

Other Worlds Austin is proud to present the inaugural Dan O’Bannon Filmmaker Award to the team behind THE GOLDEN RECORD PROJECT, Christopher Sibley, Writer/Director, Andrew Van Wyk, Writer/ Producer, Sean Faulk, Writer, and Michael Stine, Director of Photography. Inspired by the true story behind NASA’s Voyager Interstellar Mission, Sibley’s film follows famed astronomer Carl Sagan and author Ann Druyan as they lead a team challenged with encapsulating ‘what it means to be human’ onto a Golden Record that, billions of years later, becomes integral to the survival of a descendant of humanity: an AI astronaut. This year’s jury was: Jim Brunzell, Festival Programmer Meredith Johns, SFX Artist and Production House Executive Jean Ann Lauer, Fest Programmer/Director Andrew Matthews, Filmmaker Mike Saulters, Journalist Tishuan Scott, Actor Christine Thompson, Journalist
