Note from the editors Love is in the air indeed. October and November signify the two months where many marriages are planned and when the White Tailed Deer begin their courting rituals. The groups of bucks that you have been seeing hanging together are now broken up and the friendships between them are transformed into courtship. Here at A Shot of Texas Ranch we are preparing for fall with the planting of our winter vegetables and preparing the grounds for our holiday parties. The construction of bathrooms and outdoor kitchen are in full swing with completion in December of 2017. What a way to wrap up the year!

We Have A Winner! Meet Charlie Crash! The winner of our Tail Waggin’s Dog Contest. He is a three-year-old Border Collie born at the CRL Ranch outside of Ft. Worth, Texas. Crash and his owner, Adam Derby, live in Austin, Texas, and enjoy an active, dog-friendly lifestyle. Crash is the perfect active companion joining Adam on mountain bike rides, runs around Lady Bird Lake, and paddle boarding trips down the Colorado river. During warmer months, Crash can be found in the water. He enjoys boating on Lake Travis, hiking the Twin Falls 8 Shot of Texas Magazine™
Greenbelt, or splashing in the pool. To stay cool, Crash is a member of the San Gabriel Air Dogs and competes all summer in dock diving events. In the big splash completion, Crash has jumped over 24 feet through the air into a pool of water. His proudest dock diving moment was his demo during the 2016 Summer X-Games and his trip through the Monster Energy athletes’ suite. Crash has even used his dock diving talent during the filming of a commercial for Starmark’s line of floating water toys.
Crash spends the fall preparing for Frisbee season, which runs from November through April in Texas. Crash is part of the Flying Disc Dogs of Austin (FDDA) and enjoys competing, demoing, and practicing with the club. Crash performed his first Frisbee demo at the Austin Pet Expo when he was only 12 weeks old. Crash has earned first place titles in nearly every major event, but has a preference for UpDog which combines core competencies from both agility and Frisbee. FDDA hosts an UpDog event in Austin each spring that is open to competitors of all skill levels. Crash’s favorite Frisbee event is the Quadruped, which is all about “going long.” The Quadruped, taking place annually in Houston, judges a dog solely on distance, and Crash has earned first place titles with Frisbee catches of over 80 yards. Crash is also an active member of the Rush Flyball Team. Flyball is a dog sport in which teams of four dogs race relay drag-race style against one another over a line of hurdles, to a box that

releases a tennis ball, then back over the jumps to their handlers while carrying the ball. Crash is so fast that he can run 51 feet, over jumps, turn around, catch the ball, and return in under five seconds. When not competing, Crash holds a large responsibility to serve as a model foster brother for Border Collies who share his home through the All Border Collie Rescue program. Crash has never met a dog he didn’t like and does a wonderful job helping new rescues with their new beginnings. While Crash often misses his foster friends after they’ve been adopted, he’s always excited to meet the next one. Many of Crash’s foster friends get adopted to families in Austin who participate in the Border Collie Meetups, hosted monthly at a variety of local dog parks such as the Dog House Drinkery. Meetup locations and times can be found on Meetup.com. Crash has helped over a dozen dogs find their forever homes, and plans to help many more, including his current foster brother, Scotty. Some of Crash’s foster friends have even gone off to perform important jobs such as diabetic alertness. HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST HUNTING DOG By: Darren Marcy
Not everyone agrees on what breed makes the best hunting dog. Arguments abound at any sporting club or gun range, or over breakfast on opening morning, and tales are told about great dogs whose legends have grown with time. Scrapbooks are full of fading photos of faithful canine companions — both good and bad, but beloved all the same. One thing almost all upland bird hunters can agree on, however, is that having a dog in the field makes the hunt more exciting, successful, and fulfilling. 14 Shot of Texas Magazine™
Any hunter who has owned a bird dog will have strong opinions about which breed makes the best hunting dog. Those opinions are often based on experience — good and bad. Hunting over a welltrained dog with a great nose who covers a lot of ground, locks on to a bird, holds steady, and then delivers it gently to hand will be remembered. Does Your Upland Hunting Dog Have Style?
Working at a Range That Fits Your Style
An Intelligent Hunting Dog Can Correct
Range is also a function of the type of birds you’re planning on hunting with your dog. Once that question is answered, the range question kind of solves itself. Still, it’s a characteristic of a good hunting dog you’ll want to consider. A dog chasing sharptails or Huns on the prairie will need to cover a lot of ground and run all day. Often, this type of dog will be several hundred yards away at any given time. Conversely, a dog plying the thick woods of a ruffed grouse covert will need to work close. Make sure your dog will work at a range that fits your hunting style.
One of the top traits a great bird dog can KDYH LV LQWHOOLJHQFH EXW GH¿QLQJ ZKDW WKDW LV FDQ SURYH DV KDUG DV ¿QGLQJ D GRJ ZKR possesses it. For some, it simply means brains and the ability to accept training and OHDUQ IURP WKDW WUDLQLQJ %\ WKDW GH¿QLWLRQ it’s hard to beat a golden retriever, one of the most trainable breeds. Labs are in the hunt, as well. But for some hunters, intelligence is described as a dog’s ability to ¿JXUH WKLQJV RXW DQG UHPHPEHU $ GRJ ZKR learns from experience is invaluable. You can’t train that into a dog. Having an intelligent dog isn’t always easy on the he hunter’s ego, either. Almost everybody who has worked with great hunting dogs has a story (or several) of times their dog outsmarted them and got the job done despite te their efforts to get the dog to do something somethiing else.
This is whether a breed is biddable, or how well a dog does what he’s asked. Some dogs are easily corrected. Golden retrievers and labs are known for being easy to train, as are several other breeds. Brittanys, springers, and German shorthairs all get high marks in this area. Additionally, some dogs are a little hardheaded and require a heavier hand — some of the pointer breeds come to mind. One of the quickest ways to lose a return invitation to a hunt is to have your dog chase all the pheasants out of the other HQG RI D FXW VWXEEOH ¿HOG \DUGV RXW RI gun range. Just for the record, before we go any further, and in regard for my good friends in the sanitation and composting businesses, so they know that I was actually listening to them through their tedious lectures: Dirt and soil ARE NOT the same thing. I have taken a little poetic license with the terms to justify a somewhat familiar sounding and witty title. So as not to confuse or misinform anyone, here are the actual definitions: DIRT – Silt, often from pulverized rock, and void of any beneficial nutrients and microbes that healthy plants need. SOIL - A living environment, which contains microorganisms, decaying organic matter, earthworms and other insects. Basically, Dirt is dead and Soil is alive, although you can add organic matter (compost) to dirt to revitalize it. It has also been found that not only do these microorganisms make you happy, they also make you healthy. Playing into the Wind Players who want to play well against the wind need to know how to control their ball flight. To do this, you have to make a controlled swing. Below are three tips to help you maintain control in windy situations: The most important element in maintaining control is having good balance. Set up with a wider stance and lower position. This will give you a much better foundation and lead to a ball position that will be a little farther back in your stance. When selecting what club to hit, remember that for every 10mph of wind, you will want to go one or two clubs stronger. For example, if you would normally take the shot with your six iron, switch to your five iron and focus on making a smooth controlled swing. Control the pace and length of your swing, keeping it a little more compact on your backswing and your follow through. This will put less spin on the ball and produce a more penetrating trajectory. Do not over swing! Also, remember that to hit it low, you need to make a more shallow swing. The steeper the swing, the higher the ball flight. Try these tips and you will find that the wind may not have you second guessing your shots. By Bill Easterly - The Golf Ranch

Wild squirrels have a high death rate; most don’t live more than 3-5 years although they can live as many as 12. Food availability is the greatest factor in determining a squirrel’s longevity. Squirrels have a very high metabolism and require a constant supply of foods high in fat. They eat more than their body weight weekly. Tree squirrels do not hibernate and which is why you see them busily burying nuts and seeds in the fall. Like birds, squirrels are just trying to survive. They can be very entertaining in their antics to acquire food. One way to keep them from raiding your birdfeeders is to provide them with feeders of their own. Squirrels love nuts, dried corn on the cob and seeds. They will keep you amused with their energetic raids on the squirrel feeders you provide. Mount your squirrel feeders at least 15 feet, or more, away from your birdfeeders. Clean them out periodically to avoid mold and mildew. Enjoy and watch your squirrels go nuts!
