History

By the mid-1870s, the threat of Indian attack subsided and the population grew rapidly to 9,740 by 1890.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Texas Railway, which reached Jacksboro August 24, 1898 brought additional growth and provided access to markets outside the county.

Cattle ranching dominated Jack County’s economy in its early years. By 1890 there were 68,756 cattle in the county. Agribusiness grew rapidly after large-scale farming was introduced in the late 1870s.

The dominant crop in the county’s early years was corn. Cotton was also grown in considerable quantities after 1890.

Jacksboro made its mark in agricultural history when Tom M. Marks, editor of the newspaper and part-time county agent, began the Corn Club in 1907 which later became the first Texas 4-H. The Corn Club began with a membership of 111 boys, each receiving a gallon of a new type of corn seed. The first county fair was held in 1908 with 91 boys and 30 men exhibiting their corn in addition to 270 other exhibits.

Oil was first discovered in the county near Bryson in 1923, setting off a small boom. Now, in the 21st century, petroleum and gas production, oilfield services, and livestock are the central elements to the area’s economy.

In Nov. 1940, the Texas Lost Battalion of WWII was mobilized at Jacksboro's Fort Richardson. The battalion, entitled “lost” because of the U.S. government having no idea where they were for the better part of three years, were captured by Japanese forces and sent to work on railroads, in mines and other forms of labor. Fifty-eight of the men survived the 42-month ordeal.

Jack County was approved as an establishment by the Texas Legislature August 27, 1856 out of what was then a larger Cooke County. It was named for brothers and patriots in the Texas Revolution, William H. Jack and Patrick C. Jack. Settlers began arriving in the future county the prior year with the first settlement established in 1856 being Keechi, according to the Handbook of Texas Online.

Before settlement, the area was a borderland between the Caddo and Comanches. The Butterfield Overland Mail Trail crossed the county and ran from 1856 until 1861, connecting Memphis and St. Louis to San Francisco.

County residents voted 76 to 14 against secession in February 1861.

Although the area was untouched by Civil War combat, removal of federal troops resulted in frequent Indian raids with many residents fleeing east. From 1860 to 1870, the population dwindled from 1,000 to 694.

In 1867, the U.S. Army established Fort Richardson on Lost Creek near Jacksboro to protect pioneers against Indian raids. The fort was completed in 1869 and was abandoned in 1878. Mesquiteville was designated the county seat and later renamed Jacksboro.

In May 1871, Jacksboro received national attention for the trial of Kiowa War Chiefs Satanta and Big Tree for the murder of seven teamsters during a raid on Salt Creek Prairie. It was the first trial of natives in a white man's court. They, along with a third War Chief Satank, were sentenced to be executed in September, but the sentence was commuted to life in prison.

The runway has become cracked, but the city recently received a matching grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to overhaul the runway’s pavement.

Bryson History The City of Bryson, in western Jack County, has a population of 539 as of the 2010 census.

The community was first settled in the late 19th century. Originally known as Mount Hecla, a post office opened under that name in 1878. Henry Bryson built the area’s first residence, a log cabin,

that same year. The community was later renamed after him. This change was officially recognized in 1884, when the local post office took the name Bryson. Mr. Bryson went on the serve as County Commissioner. Early pioneer family names of Bryson were Blount, Chambers, Clayton, Cook, Crumpton, Cullers, Enlow, Epperson, Henderson, Keyser, Kuykendall, McCloud, Moore, Raley, Shanafelt and Vanhooser.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Texas Railway, a subsidiary of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, reached Bryson in the fall of 1902. In mid1920s, Bryson became an oil processing center for local producers. The resulting population boom led to the community being known as Jack County’s “second city” (after Jacksboro).

Bryson was incorporated in 1929 and had a population of 641 in the 1930 census. A 1938 oil boom in Bryson saw the population explode with many people forced to live in tents. In 1940, the census dropped back to 806. As oil production declined, so did the population.

The low point occurred in 1970, when only 455 people lived within the city limits. During the latter half of the 20th century, Bryson slowly grew to over 500 residents. In 1988, there were seven businesses

serving the community. There were reportedly 22 businesses in Bryson as of 2004.

Faith Community Hospital

Faith Community Hospital opened its new facility in September 2015. The construction of the Swan Family Wellness Center, below, nears completion.

The fitness center, set to open in March, will feature a swimming pool, state of the art excercise equipment and areas for group fitness.

When it comes to medical services, the reality is bigger is not always better. In fact, for Jack County residents, Faith Community Hospital is an important and critical option for healthcare.

Opened in 1958, Faith Community Hospital was a 41-bed medical facility that provided healthcare services for residents of Jack County, Texas. In Fall 2015, the hospital completed construction on a 75,000 square-foot facility, complete with cafe and, soon to come, a wellness center.

FCH offers a wealth of medical services including: inpatient care, minor surgeries, obstetrics, level IV 24-hour trauma center, advanced radiology services including CT scanning, outpatient lab, physical therapy, social services, patient education, rural health clinic, and more.

Space is also available for additional parking and medical office buildings in the future. The new campus is also in better compliance with requirements for disabled patients and visitors.

There are many new services that

to benefit residents, such as an obstetrics unit for local delivery of babies. Minor surgical and screening procedures are also a highlight of the newer hospital, as well as on-site mammography screening, expanded room for primary and specialty care clinics, and expanded physical and cardiovascular therapy departments.

“At a time when many rural communities are seeing a reduction in health-

care services, we are fortunate to be experiencing growth in Jack County,” said Phyliss Elenburg, president of the FCH Charitable Foundation. “It is important for rural residents to have hospitals nearby to access the essential medical services that the community needs and expects.”

“We’re headed in the right direction,” explained Frank Beaman, CEO of FCH. A five-member board oversees the

facility consisting of Edwina Swan, Mark Maples, Board President Lori McBrayer, Shelley Owen and Larry Hopwood. Seats held by Swan and Hopwood will be up for election in 2017.

Hospital board elections take place in November with three-year terms.

Serving Our Community for 125 Years Outdoorsmen enjoy Jack County for its abundance of wildlife. Visitors to Fort Richardson State Park share the serene setting with a wide variety of fauna year-round such as these deer grazing at dusk.

Jack County is full of outdoor activity, as residents enjoy hunting and fishing pretty much year round.

Many folks like to fish at Lake Jacksboro east of the city off State Highway 59. Others enjoy the outdoors at Fort Richardson State Park off US Highway 281 on the south end of town.

Campers can camp at either location. Those that want to camp at the lake are charged fees if they need electricity or not. There are six electric/water hookups at the lake and a five-night camping limit is enforced.

Camping permits at the lake are picked up at the nearby Twin Lakes Activity Center.

Fort site structures include seven of the original buildings which have been restored: the post hospital; the officer’s quarters (commanding officer); a powder magazine; a morgue; a commissary; a guard house; and a bakery, which baked 600 loaves per day. There are also two replicas: officers’ and enlisted men’s barracks.

The officers’ barrack houses the Interpretive Center.

Activities include historical study, picnicking, camping, hiking, biking, day-use equestrian, nature study, wading in the creek (seasonal), swimming (accessible via Lost Creek

Reservoir State Trailway or by road), and fishing. For anglers, Quarry Lake is stocked with catfish, bass and trout periodically during the year. If you plan to swim at the park, read through the swimming safety tips before you come.

Lost Creek Reservoir, the twin to Lake Jacksboro, offers camping at Lost Creek Reservoir State Park.

The Lost Creek Trailway connects Lost Creek Reservoir with Fort Richardson State Park. The trailway was funded through the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, with Texas Parks and Wildlife, the City of Jacksboro and Jack County as partners, sharing in the matching funds for this grant program. It was authorized for construction in 1994.

The cost for the trail was $442,000. The grand opening ceremony was held on National Trails Day, June 6, 1998.

This approximately 10-mile hike, bike and equestrian trail runs adjacent to Fort Richardson and along Lost Creek, which is the main watershed for the two city lakes. The trail follows scenic Lost Creek and travels the east side of Lake Jacksboro and Lost Creek Reservoir.

In the brutal summers, the Jacksboro swimming pool is open. The Jacksboro Community Pool is available for open swim, swim lessons and pool parties, but the most important function it serves is as a place to make great memories.

This is a linear trail system that winds with the terrain and abounds in scenic beauty. It travels through the park with many shaded areas of pecan and oak trees.

Most of the trail travels by the creek or lakes which provide numerous opportunities to fish and swim. This is a beautiful trail, abundant also in wildlife and wildflowers. There is a trailhead at Fort Richardson State Park & Historic Site and a trailhead on Lost Creek Reservoir.

This trail is 10 feet wide and has an improved surface of base material with a topping of approximately 4 inches of screening materials. This surface creates a smooth trail for many uses.

Admission is $3 for adults with children 12 and under are free.

Students use the park year round for different field trips. Events happen on a regular basis to provide family fun for everyone.

While serving as special county agent, he felt there was a great need for new developments in farming methods. After failing to convince the local farmers of new changes, he turned to the youth of the area and organized The Corn Club on September 8, 1907, in Jacksboro.

New types of corn seed were distributed among the membership of 111 boys with each boy receiving one gallon of corn.

The following year, 1908, the first county fair was held with an attendance between 1,000 to 2,000 people.

The Corn Club survived and became the Texas 4-H Clubs and the legacy of Tom Marks continues today.

The work he did in the agricultural field is recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Visitors to the museum enjoy the numerous artifacts related to early life in Jack County, as well as a vast collection of military exhibits, 4-H memorabilia, Jacksboro High School mementos, along with cemetery records and genealogical records.

On site is a restored 1880s log cabin, a collection of early farm implements and an out-building filled with pioneer life necessities.

Jack County pioneer living comes to life each year the first Saturday in June when visitors travel back in time to the early days of Jack County as they re-live the past and listen to
