It’s Time To Catch A Big Bass A
lmost all of the anglers I visit with mention that catching a bass in the 10+ pound class is their ultimate goal. An unbe851B-.81 :A9.1> ;2 ŋ ?41>91: 5: the Texas/Louisiana area spend small fortunes searching for that “wall-hanger,” however, the number of anglers that succeed is relatively small. With that in mind, let’s put together a plan that just may shift the odds in your favor and allow readers of the “Today” 9-3-F5:1 @; 6;5: @4-@ 185@1 3>;A< of anglers that have caught a double-digit hog.
1:1>-88E ?<1-75:3 9;?@ ;2 the bass that you catch weighing six pounds or more are probably female. There are a number of theories about why male bass have a shorter lifespan and the best I have heard from biologist deals with @41 9-81 ?AŊ 1>5:3 9;>1 ?@>1?? -:0 strain during the annual spawning process. The male makes the nest, chases the female, coaxes her into the nest area, goes through the spawning ritual, and generally protects the fry from predators un@58 @41 2>E >1-/4 ŋ :31>85:3 ?5F1 2

ate and rest. Basically a big bass has four “moods”: Ambushing, Relaxing, Cruising and Suspending. Ambushing – Big bass like to lie in heavy cover or shadows waiting for an unsuspecting prey to pass by. Relaxing – After feeding, a big bass will usually seek sanctuary in deep water (or heavy cover) and it 5? ;2@1: @;A34 @; 1:@5/1 @41 ŋ ?4 @; hit a bait. Cruising – A few years back, Texas angler John Hope put trans-
mitters in large bass and found them to cruise along shorelines in Z UT 211@ ;2 C-@1> 0A>5:3 ?<1/5ŋ / times, and then after feeding the ŋ ?4 C;A80 >1@A>: @; @415> r4;91s to rest. Big bass do spend time cruising so keep that in mind. Suspending – Studies have shown that in large reservoirs such as Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn big bass will often suspend in groups at depths of 20-40 feet. One of the keys for locating big bass is the availability of deep water nearby. An example would be a ridge or channel lip where the bottom falls sharply from say six or ?1B1: 211@ 0;C: @; VY ZT 211@ +;A 0;:p@ 4-B1 @; -/@A-88E ŋ ?4 @45? 011< but you should keep that bait near what is referred to as the “breakline.” Big bass seem to need more depth than smaller bass and the sharp drops near deeper water give them an added sense of security. Cover just makes a big bass feel more comfortable. The cover I am referring to could be brush, a ?@A9< ŋ 180 ;> 6A?@ - ?5:381 C-0 ;2 Ō ;-@5:3 B131@-@5;: So now we approach the long discussed question - Do big baits really catch bigger bass? hours; however many of the big ones prowl at night. And keep in mind that big bass are seldom as active as smaller bass. How many stories have you heard about the “big one that got away?” A 10-pounder can come at any time so be sure you are ready. hat grows on the land around Toledo Bend Lake? Absolutely everything if we deal with the geology, climatology, etc. of the area. The climate is mild and most of the dirt is red with iron. Historically the crop that grows best is Pine, but I have found that almost anything will grow for a while, and trees and woody shrubs for longer. If you want to use chemicals to kill things in the air and in the soil it is possible to extend the life of most fruit trees and fruiting vines. The wonderful humidity, that is so kind to our skin, carries all manner of fungus. If you are vigilant and give your plants lots of room to breathe, by choice of location and judicious pruning, you can keep the fungus at bay. &;810; 1:0 -71 5? -.;A@ ZY miles long, give or take a few. The Primrose Jasmine and Lady Banksia Rose are trailing beauties. Primrose Jasmine is yellow and usually semi-double in cultivation. Some species seem more fragrant than others. They are considered an evergreen shrub, but are frost tender. They are Chinese in origin, family Oleaceae Jasminum and species j mesnyi. Do not be afraid to prune, because they will overgrow and put down runners. When Lady Banksia is in full bloom, she is a wonder

Another issue is parts of Toledo Bend reservoir used by hunters to boat to the WMA may be packed with giant salvinia as well.
boat lanes are more open now because of herbicide treatment, and there is evidence of giant salvinia damage caused by weevils. But once a plant like this becomes established, eradication becomes almost impossible, and that makes steady management a necessity.
