EATURED HERE is the wedding of actress, Toni Smith, and actor Jared Dager at the Perry House in Monterey, CA on November 10, 2016. Toni’s parents Libby and Lee Smith are longtime Lakeway residents. They built their house in Lakeway in 1986 and have been Lakeway residents for over 30 years. Both are retired; Libby retired from the Lake Travis School District and Lee is a retired officer from the Air Force and also retired from the Texas Secretary of State office. Toni attended Lake Travis districts schools, where she excelled in theatrical productions that showcased her talents in acting, voice and dance. After high school she attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts for Musical Theatre. After a short stint back in Austin in 2006, doing shows at Zach Scott Theatre and the Zilker Summer Musical (during which time she was photographed for our Fall 2006 cover!), she headed to L.A. to attend graduate school at UCLA, graduating with an MFA in Acting. She has taught Acting and Voice and Speech at UCLA, and taught for a year in Texas at Stephen F Austin State University (teaching Acting, Voice & Speech, and Accents & Dialects). She is currently at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) where she teaches Beginning thru Advanced Voice and Speech. Her main focus, however, is acting, with a focus on theatrical performances, commercials, voiceovers and TV. She accompanied the North American Tour of Blithe Spirit, starring Angela Lansbury, as the Elvira/ Edith understudy from 2014-2015. In 2015 she was nominated for an Ovation Award (here in Los Angeles) as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Elizabeth Benning in Young Frankenstein at DOMA Theatre. But let’s now turn to the important news! Toni met her husband, Jared Dager, also an actor, when she served as his vocal coach for his role in Romeo and Juliet in 2012. When they both survived that challenging experience, they knew their relationship was something special. Toni and Jared live in Sherman Oaks with 2 kittens, Haku and Chihiro, that they adopted from the Burbank Animal Shelter.

Lake Travis Cavaliers: 2016 6A State Champions! STORY BY COACH JONATHAN COATS | PHOTOS BY SHELIA PARODI

T
HE 2016 FOOTBALL season was full of promise for the Lake Travis Cavaliers. Despite losing to Katy in the 6A Championship game the year prior, the Cavaliers’ fate would rest on the shoulders of numerous returning senior starters hungry for a championship. Prior to the start of fall practice, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, the bible of Texas HS football, predicted the Cavaliers would win a state championship and expectedly ranked them #1. The pressure of high expectations was nothing new for the Cavaliers. Championship teams of the past found traits like intelligence and determination almost in higher demand than size and strength. Complicated defensive and offensive schemes give the Cavs an advantage. Those schemes though, take time to learn and perfect. This would prove evident as Lake Travis opened the season versus a highly ranked perennial powerhouse in Converse Judson. The game remained close late in the 4th quarter, and a Hail Mary pass by QB Charlie Brewer fell short. Lake Travis would begin the season with a loss. An inexperienced team and coaching staff might dwell on such a defeat and risk sabotaging the season. This team was different. Players trusted in the process, coaches adjusted the starting lineups in preparation for their next game against #3 ranked Cibolo Steele. Both offenses caught fire early, matching each other score for score. An injury, late in the 4th quarter to QB Charlie Brewer propelled backup Matthew Baldwin into action. Baldwin masterfully executed a late drive ending in a Cameron Dicker 46-yard FG to tie the game and send it to overtime. In double OT, an exhausted defense stopped Steele on 4th and 2 to secure the thrilling victory. The Cavalier train was back on track. Dominating victories over Dallas Jesuit and Pflugerville Hendrickson closed out the non-district schedule. Every two years, the U.I.L., the governing body of extracurricular activities in Texas meets to re-align the high schools, adjusting the classification of schools that may have

gained or lost students in enrollment. The process can drastically affect the ability of teams to make the playoffs. A tough district forces each team to battle to make one of the 4 coveted playoff slots. Lake Travis stayed with previous district rival Westlake and both Hays ISD schools, Hays and Lehman. Leander ISD schools Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, and Leander were slotted to make up the new District 25-6A. The overall level of competition would greatly improve as Vista Ridge and Vandegrift went deep in the playoffs the previous seasons. The Cavaliers opened the district schedule with Hays. At this point, the Cavs were virtually unstoppable in all phases of the game. The defense was smothering, the offense electric. Lake Travis kicker, Cameron Dicker showed off his golden leg too, shouldering double duty place-kicking and punting with power and accuracy. Each district game was a dominating victory, including the 49-7 rout of rival Westlake and 55-0 destruction of Vandegrift. All told, the Cavaliers averaged 58 points a game in district while only giving up an average of 5. That dominance resulted in the Cavaliers winning their 6th consecutive district championship, their 9th in the last 10 seasons. Redistricting would put Lake Travis in Region 4, meaning the playoffs would include teams from south of Austin, not Houston and Dallas as in years past. San Antonio Madison would await the Cavs in Round 1. The Mavericks proved to be no match. RB Maleek Barkley ran for a 72 yd. TD on the first play from scrimmage, the final score 56-7. The second round opponent in previous state championship years has proven to be the Cavaliers toughest game. Smithson Valley is known for their toughness and execution in all phases of the game. This year’s team was no different. Lake Travis started hot only to allow Smithson Valley to claw back in the game by halftime. A late game fumble recovery by DE Reid Bacon secured the victory for Lake Travis. WR Cade Green and RB Maleek Barkley had huge games for the offense along with LB Mateo Lopez and DE TJ Simien for the defense. The third round opponent would be Los Fresnos High, from a city nearly three hundred and fifty miles south of Austin. The Los Fresnos Falcons were having a banner year for the school and relished the opportunity to face Lake Travis. Thousands of Los Fresnos fans travelled the long distance to the game held in Cavalier Stadium the day after Thanksgiving. Home games are rare this late in the playoffs, and the Cavaliers used this as an opportunity to give thanks, providing a welcoming atmosphere to the Los Fresnos fans, parents and players. The game went LT’s way. A late TD by Los Fresnos broke the shutout, with a final score of 54-7. Rival Westlake would stand in the way of reaching the State Semi-Finals. Seeking a 10th consecutive win over Westlake was on the players’ minds all week. The offense started quickly, scoring on their first drive and never looking back. Stellar defensive play

held the Westlake offense in check. DB Michael Mast recovered a bad snap on a punt and scored a defensive TD. A late forced fumble by DT Cesar Guzman was recovered by LB Conor Kratsas for another TD. The Cavaliers dismantled the Chaps 51-3. Few victories are more satisfying than one over rival Westlake. This group of seniors took pride in never losing to the rival Chaps. The Cavaliers expected to face North Shore HS, winner of the 6A Division II state title in 2015. Upstart Humble Atascocita pulled out an overtime victory and earned the right to face Lake Travis in the State Semi-Finals in a familiar venue, the San Antonio Alamodome. This group of Cavaliers has never played in the Alamodome, but as a school the Cavs were 9-0 there. The offense wasted little time, scoring on their first possession. Fumble recoveries by DB Michael Mast, LB Mateo Lopez and DE TJ Championship trophy Simien led to scores. The final tally, 63-21, was much more lopsided than the local sportswriters predicted. On the other side of the playoff bracket, The Woodlands took a 14-0 record into their game with predicted finalist and #1 ranked Allen. They shocked the state by pulling the upset. The Highlanders were on a roll and playing inspired football for #21 Grant Milton, a LB who was in a coma from severe injuries sustained in a previous playoff game. The Cavaliers had a hard and focused week of practice in preparation for The Woodlands, and then left after midterms Friday afternoon to Dallas/Fort Worth. The boys were greeted by thousands of fans at a send-off at the Hill Country Galleria Mall. The community support for the team was felt by the playWoodlands captains honoring ers and coaches, and there was no doubt that the entire Lake #21 Grant Milton Travis community was behind the team. The morning of game #17 Aidan Estrada winning Def MVP award day marks a tradition called Breakfast with Champions. Players, parents and coaches eat, honor a high school staff member of the week and watch highlights from the previous game. Lake Travis Principal Gordon Butler was chosen and delivered an emotional message. Once the Cavaliers took the field, it was all business. The sights and sounds of Cowboy Stadium were new, but the focus was on the championship. From the opening kickoff, the Cavaliers dominated The Woodlands. Lake Travis led 27-6 at the half. Coaches made their adjustments. The Cavs picked up where they left off and scored quickly in the second half. The defense continued to stymie the high-powered Woodlands offense. When the final whistle blew, the Cavs captured the title with a resounding 41-13 win. The storied program was once again on top. The LTakeover was complete. After the post-game celebration died down, QB Charlie Brewer and Aidan Estrada celebrating interception with Coach Antonio Wiley LB Aidan Estrada were honored as the offensive and defensive MVPs. The 2016 Cavaliers will go down as the most talented team in school history. The offense broke school records in scoring. QB Charlie Brewer set a national record in pass completion percentage, a stellar 77.2%. The defense held 15 of 16 teams below their season scoring average. The Cavs finished the season ranked #5 nationally by Maxpreps, the highest ranked public school team on the list. At this story’s deadline, an estimated 15 seniors will accept college scholarships, as many as 9 in Division I. Heroes of past Cavalier championship teams, names like Gilbert, Mayfield, Floyd, Erickson, Aydam, Crow, Pate, Gillette, Lazarus, Paulsen, Hatch, Nixon, Lagasse and Wrinkle will now be joined by the newest members, Ochoa, Lopez, Hiller, Mast, Estrada, Green, Barkley, Jaimes, and Brewer. Decades from now, the members of the 2016 Lake Travis Football Team will reflect on the lifelong bond that is formed in competition between teammates and between coaches. They’ll reminisce about pregame speeches, sounds of the crowd, and the pain and pleasure of playing the game they love. But most importantly, the feeling of pride will never fade from participating on a team and accomplishing the ultimate goal. The men that added the 6th star will never be forgotten.

ELIEVE” WAS the theme of the 2017 Dell Children’s Gala, presented by the Nyle Maxwell Family of Dealerships at the Austin Convention Center’s Grand Ballroom on January 28th. The transformation of the cavernous Grand Ballroom into a space of magic and intimacy that occurs on the evening of the Dell Gala owes much to the brilliant floral centerpieces provided by David Kurio Designs and to the lighting, video and audio effects engineered by Ilios Lighting Designs. The legendary Bob Cole, of KOKE FM, served as the Master of Ceremonies, and the Zilker String Quartet provided the perfect musical backdrop for the delectable dinner. Event Co-chairs, Joe and Emily Price, learned from terrifying personal experience what it is like to fight for the life of a child when their four-month old daughter was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on her kidney. They opened the program with an expression of their own heartfelt gratitude to the team of doctors, nurses and staff of Dell Children’s Medical Center who saved her life. The program highlighted two dramatic patient stories, one that focused on cardiology and the other on mental health. Megan and Ryan Jeter expressed their profound appreciation to Dell Children’s for their treatment of their son Ethan. While pregnant, Megan learned that Ethan had a

Held at the Hilton Austin’s Grand Ballroom and presented by Lexus of Austin & Lakeway, approximately 1,000 people gathered to observe this night of dancing duels between teams that paired prominent Austin celebrities with professional dancers. Each team spends months rehearsing their routines to prepare for the highly-anticipated showdown and a chance to compete for the coveted mirror ball trophy. This year, organizers brought back ten fan favorites from over the last decade to return to the dance floor for an exhilarating dance-off. The goal of this fierce and fabulous competition is to raise funds to benefit Travis County child abuse victims, and the event this year raised more than $1.1 million for the Center for Child Protection. Jeanne Parker and Venus Strawn, who served as Inaugural Event Chairs a decade ago, stepped up yet again to serve as Co-chairs on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary, offering endless hours of service and creative ideas to ensure an extraordinary and memorable evening. Maxine Roberts and Vicki Roberts, who have generously and persistently worked to serve and advocate for abused and neglected children, were the honorees. “Sandy Cary is without a doubt the best Realtor I have ever worked with and I have worked with many. I found her well educated, informative, friendly, patient and available above and beyond the call of duty. Her broad network of contacts made our relocation efforts productive and enjoyable. We have found everyone (without exception) in Sandy’s network to be helpful, professional and easy to work with. Her network ranged from home remodel experts (who helped us evaluate homes that required work) to financial services (which landed us a fantastic loan rate) to teenage girls to help our girls feel good about the move. As a result of working with Sandy, we found a great house at a good price and the family is excited about the move.” -J.C.

HE 2016 Austin Children’s Shelter Gala, “Giving Knows No Bounds” transported guests to a Swiss-themed, alpine winter wonderland, known on other occasions as the Hyatt Regency Austin Hotel. The coordination and planning of countless details, orchestrated by Co-chairs Shannon Schmitz and Suzanne Newhouse, made for a flawless evening. The gala was emceed by Stacy Bruce, SAFE Vice President and Executive Director of Austin Children’s Shelter Campus Based Intervention Services and Angela Glode, Chief Development Officer for The SAFE Alliance. The live auction by Heath Hale and his team of Cowboy Auctioneers created a stampede of generous bids on a variety of packages including football, traveling, yachts, golf and fabulous cuisine. Each year this gala has been the fundraising event that makes the largest impact on the children at the Austin Children’s Shelter. Funds generated by this annual Gala provide 65% of the monies needed to sustain the Shelter’s operating budget. These generous contributions are critical to allow the Shelter to continue its work to end child abuse and neglect by providing emergency shelter, transitional living, teen-parent program, supervised independent living, respite care, and foster and adoptive services. The 2016 Gala raised more than $896,000, thanks to the generosity of supporters. Among those are this year’s Guardian Award recipients, Kathy and Patrick Terry, longtime advocates for the children and families that the Shelter has served. They have compassionately given their time, resources, and guidance to the Austin Children’s Shelter and were honored for their service, dedication and their generosity. On January 1, 2017, Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace officially merged to become one alliance, The SAFE Alliance, or SAFE, Stop Abuse For Everyone. By

joining forces, SAFE is able to concentrate on working to put an end to abuse and violence more efficiently and effectively. Kelly White, CEO of SAFE stated, “We are committed to never again seeing an abused child that is victimized as an adult; a little boy who watched his dad beat his mother and then later hurts his girlfriend; a battered woman who loses custody of her children because of abuse by their father; or all the other myriad examples of the epidemic of violence that is transferred person to person and generation to generation.” According to the Centers for Disease Control, children who encounter abuse or neglect are two to three times more likely to experience violence and abuse as an adult; children who witness intimate partner violence are six times more likely to experience violence as an adult; and youth who are more violent toward peers are more likely to be violent toward their dating partners. Given this information, the city of Austin is fortunate to have SAFE, as it offers on-campus services for children, young adults and families affected by abuse, exploitation, and neglect. “
W
HY THE FROG?” everyone asks when they come to our showroom. Anne Marie has always loved Frogs and “The Pad” is analogous to the home. Since we design kitchens and baths and supply most products and services for the home it seemed natural to call our business The Frog Pad when we began out of our garage in 2008. So strong is the calling of the frog, when we moved into our new larger showroom last August, we found out that two frogs live under the rock right in front of our store. That’s destiny! We have customers who bring us frog figurines, statues, paintings, stuffed animals . . . you name it. We had no idea how many “Frog Fans” there are out there. We are so blessed to be in a community that supports and embraces small businesses. We have the best of all worlds. We are local, experienced and knowledgeable and can serve our customers with that personal touch but we are part of a large buying group that enables us to buy better than the big box stores and builder and contractor suppliers.
Please visit our showroom and experience the local touch for yourself. Anne Marie and Steve Pyle are the proud owners of The Frog Pad Kitchen and Bath Designer Showroom. Granite Fantasy Brown installed by Alpha Granite, Hardware by Jeffrey Alexander

A Christmas Fair STORY AND PHOTOS BY BROOKE TOELLER
D Jennifer Duffie, Sam Arnett and Mac of Tomlinson’s Feed
R. RAND DOYLE and the Lakeway Veterinary Clinic staff opened their hospital and their hearts to the community to host a Christmas Fair benefiting local neglected and abandoned animals. Kids, adults, and animals were entertained with hours of free fun. From the line of kids (and some adults) eagerly waiting for the professional face painters to create festive faces, to the exotic petting zoo that included miniature goats and a kangaroo, to the pony and train rides, there was much to experience. This festive Christmas Fair was complete when Santa arrived to take pictures with guests and their animals! Several members of the Lakeway Police Department, including Andrea Greig, Animal Protection Officer, and Orka the K9 dog, couldn’t resist a picture with Santa! To donate to the Rescue Fund, visit the Lakeway Veterinary Clinic.

MUVE HEALTH, OPENING its flagship location in Lakeway, Texas in March, is a technology-enabled healthcare delivery organization focused solely on Total Joint Replacement. Our reimagined approach to Joint Replacement combines the efficiency and “healthy patient” mindset of a traditional outpatient setting with a level of extended recovery care typically associated with an inpatient setting, all while placing a new focus on a highly specialized, individualized patient experience. Leveraging an innovative, simplified approach to payment and partnerships with the country’s leading joint replacement surgeons, we are creating the premier national network of surgical facilities focused solely on TJR procedures. Muve Health’s Lakeway location is led by Drs. David Dodgin and E. Matthew Heinrich. Dr. Dodgin specializes in hip and knee replacement and joint preservation surgery of the knee. He has helped develop national teaching programs for anterior hip replacement since 2004. Dr. Dodgin is board-certified and completed orthopedic training at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his Reconstructive Fellowship in Roanoke, Virginia and received his MD from University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Heinrich specializes in joint replacement, from new, minimally invasive techniques to complex revision techniques. Dr. Heinrich completed formal training at Baylor College of Medicine, concentrating on adult reconstructive surgery after his residency. He holds degrees from Texas Tech School of Medicine and University of Houston. Board-certified, Dr. Heinrich is a consultant and a clinical assistant professor for the University of Texas Medical Branch. His fellow orthopedic surgeons in Austin commend him for service in the Texas Army National Guard and Naval Air Reserves.

EEP BLUE Gala was the title of the 7th Annual Lakeway Police Foundation Gala, hosted at the Lakeway Resort and Spa. Presented by Lexus of Lakeway, this annual benefit provides a critical source of funding, outside the City of Lakeway’s budget, to support the officers that protect and serve the Lakeway community. This year’s gala upped the ante, raising $76,000, a new record. In the last year, funds raised have helped to support an officer whose child had health issues and helped another officer obtain proper eyewear. The Lakeway Police Foundation also purchased six more defibrillators for patrol cars. Since police officers are typically the first to arrive on the scene, they often find themselves the first to face a critical medical emergency; and the availability of defibrillators in squad cars has saved many lives. The Lakeway Police Foundation also supports the Texas Police Chief Memorial of Fallen Officers around the state of Texas. This year, the Lakeway Police Foundation sent funds to help the families of the brothers in the blue who were fatally shot in the Dallas police shooting last summer. Officer Trevor Mathis was honored at the Gala as the 2016 Officer of the Year. Officer Mathis has been actively involved in supporting and boosting the morale of the police department. He has devoted time and attention to help rookie officers and has been enthusiastically involved with trainings. Under new President, Bob Stubbs, the Lakeway Police Foundation will continue to support the Lakeway Police Department and their families, as these officers are the heroes who put their lives on the line to ensure our safety every day.

Auction prizes included VIP suite tickets to a Los Angeles Clippers or Lakers game, as well as a songwriting session with Jack Ingram, who is a parent at St. Gabriel’s. Proceeds raised from the gala will go toward furthering the school’s efforts to employ the best practices in teaching and learning, empowering students to reach their full potential. Dan McKenna noted, “Our faculty and staff are grateful to have a strong community of involved and engaged parents who give back to the students, allowing us to continue to provide the most advanced curriculum for our students.”

MILY MORELAND invited cherished clients, agents and friends to join her at the sleek, contemporary South Congress Hotel to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Moreland Properties. Moreland shares this anniversary date with some other notable Austin treasures; The Dell Children’s Foundation held its first Gala to support the planned Medical Center 30 years ago, and the Austin Opera also celebrates a 30-year anniversary this year. 1986 must have been a very good year for Austin innovators and forwardthinking entrepreneurs! Like vintage wines, they have all matured beautifully! A wonderful video presented moments of Austin’s history, along with commentary from Emily Moreland’s about highlights of the 30-year period, and provided a fascinating look at the past. The ambiance was warm and inviting – many of the agents and staff have been with Moreland for over 15 years, and it was clear that there is a special bond that links this extended Moreland collegial family.

HE FESTIVELY decorated Sonesta Bee Cave Austin Hotel hosted the 2016 Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Achievement Awards Luncheon and Holiday Party. This laughter filled luncheon brought business owners throughout Lake Travis together to mingle and give accolades to some of the outstanding local businesses that flourish in Lake Travis. As sponsors of this Awards Luncheon, Dr. Feste, of Natural Bio Health and David Sheehan, of Farmers Insurance, shared about their businesses and the services they offer. With one humorous anecdote after another, Emcee Dr. Brad Lancaster, Superintendent of the Lake Travis Independent School District, kept attendees entertained. In addition to handing out the awards, Dr. Lancaster spoke of the remarkable relationship the Lake Travis Independent School District has with the Chamber and how the Junior Chamber of Commerce, introduced by Bob Stubbs, is active and thriving at the Lake Travis High School. The 2016 Business of the Year was awarded to Community Impact Lake Travis/Westlake for their in depth coverage and analysis of local government and business. O
N NEW YEAR’S EVE, the Friends of Help Our Wounded (HOW) held their Fourth Annual Gala at the Sonesta Bee Cave Austin Hotel, setting new records for attendance (over 200 guests) and donations! The HOW Gala Advisory Board, chaired by Dottie Stevenson, organized the gala and the event raised more than $108,000! Rosie Babin has spent the past 13 years as a caregiver for her son, Alan “Doc” Babin, Jr., a combat medic with the 82nd Airborne Division who was grievously wounded when he rushed to help a fallen comrade. Knowing firsthand the daunting challenges of advocating with the military and with the Veteran’s Administration for the care wounded veterans need, Rosie Babin founded HOW in 2009 to help service members, and those who care for them. HOW provides aid, mentorship, and advocacy tailored to this special population’s unique needs. She has shared her intimate knowledge of how to coordinate effective care and how to identify the pitfalls and delays that can disrupt these efforts with the large network of veteran families HOW serves. HOW has impacted the lives of thousands of service members and their caregivers during its short existence, including nearly 800 cases of tailored financial support. With the funds raised from the 2015 New Year’s Eve Gala, HOW was able to help wounded veterans and their families with emergency financial assistance and housing, medical equipment not covered by the government or other agencies, travel to and from Jo Ellen Lyons, Diane Jackson specialty medical facilities, groceries, and auto repairs. The night before the gala, the HOW Gala Advisory Board honored major donors with a VIP cocktail party at the home of Dottie Stevenson in Arbolago. To donate, please visit www.HelpOurWounded.org. To the Gherkins in the Back STORY BY TARJA PARSSINEN
I
SEE YOU, gherkins. Behind the jar of D.L. Jardine’s Peach Salsa. May you not be jealous of the occasional jar of cornichons. I am a sucker for little French names and sometimes, gherkins, there are things that go better with charcuterie. It’s hard standing in the back. I should know. I was in the second row in Miss Kay’s Tap Recital to “Twist and Shout.” But when one’s heart demands baba ganoush, what can one do? Are we out of flat bread? What have you done with the flat bread, gherkins? There was a time when I chose you—YES YOU—four times a day. That was then. Oh, don’t go crying to the forgotten jar of Spiced Fig Chocolate, she’s in the same boat, for chrissakes, yearning to be free of the Spiced Fig that holds her down. You might not be sandwich-sliced, but your job is no less important, you wee brined cucumber. You are Spectator of the Unsavory. Gawker of Goods Gone Bad. Bystander to the Meat That Stands Alone. Corroborator to the Great ‘Tater Gratin Scandal. Be not bitter that you have been shoved next to the JarroDophilus Probiotic. Brackish, yes, but not bitter. It doesn’t suit you. What did you say about my barbecue chicken? That’s what I thought. I know you have been the subject of much teasing from the Side-Door Condiments and I will have a talk with soy-sauce right after I over-douse my egg roll in him. You see, gherkins, you are more an Accoutrement than a Condiment, and after several rounds of therapy with the experts in the Frozen Section, I think what’s holding me back is that you were never mine to begin with. I did not bag you from the womb with my Club Card—I found you, a little pickled Moses abandoned in the reeds with a can of steel-cut oats, Bush’s baked beans and ten jars of spaghetti sauce AND I TOOK YOU IN. Were Grandpa’s castoffs mine to take? Does a bear hunt for salmon in Costco? Yes and most definitely. Perhaps the wintery lap land of the upper shelf isn’t right for you, gherkins, but I can’t concern myself with that. And if you find yourself strewn with ziplocs of the half-eaten, that section of the refrigerated adopt-a-highway might be cleaned in the next six months by an in-mate from the Parental Correctional Facility. You do not keep the best company, gherkins. I wish you could know the joys of having been adopted by a family that uses fresh ground black pepper and sea salt. Of living with fresh herbs and joking around with homemade leftovers. I wish you could know the joys of having been adopted by a family that entertains. That says, “Put the cheese plate out! Don’t forget the gherkins!”
Instead, you are stymied by the lone applesauce and his goon, the gallon of milk. I think the lemon juice understand your plight. And that odd bag of cornflour, crying his stone-ground tears. But avoid the jars of natural food-coloring. I do. To the gherkins in the back, I see you. There, there. Grandpa will return one day. And he doesn’t give a spiced fig about expiration dates.

Austin Opera Celebrates its 30th Season STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN PHOTOS BY PATTI PIESZCHALA

USTIN OPERA, a glittering gem among Austin’s premier cultural institutions, celebrates its 30th Season with a dynamic and carefully curated selection of performances. The 2016-17 Season opened with the regional premiere of Kevin Puts’ and librettist Mark Campbell’s The Manchurian Candidate. The season continued with Wagner’s powerful romantic opera, The Flying Dutchman, in its first Austin performances in a decade. Rising star Eric Einhorn returned to Austin to direct the powerhouse cast of The Flying Dutchman in a story filled with lush orchestral writing and soaring vocals. In February, Austin Opera presented Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment, a romantic comedy featuring operatic vocal fireworks by René Clara and Paul Bancroft Barbera and Soprano Rachele Gilmore. Barbera, who plays Tonio, delivered a masterful rendition of the famous tenor aria, “A Mes Amis” marked by nine perilous high Cs. In Soprano Rachele Gilmore’s debut at The Metropolitan Opera, she hit several High A’s, an unheard of accomplishment. That performance hold the record for the highest notes every sung at the Met. The season will run through May 7 and will close with one of the most beloved operas of all time, Puccini’s heartbreakingly beautiful Madame Butterfly. “We are incredibly honored by the support of the Austin community over the past 30 years. To show our gratitude, we created a season for the enjoyment of every music lover,” said Austin Opera Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Richard Buckley. What a phenomenal gift!

COLDWELL BANKER UNITED RELOCATES IN LAKEWAY The group of Coldwell Banker agents and staff could not have been more delighted with their new Lakeway location in the Craig-O’s building. That fact was clearly evident at the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and celebration hosted for clients, friends and industry partners and colleagues. Coldwell Banker United Lakeway was honored to welcome Kate Rossi, Executive Vice President of Southeast Region at NRT LLC. Ms. Rossi oversees the strategic initiatives of nearly 150 Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offices, comprising more than 8,500 independent sales associates. NRT, a subsidiary of Realogy, owns both Coldwell Banker United and also Sotheby’s International Realty.
ACCORDING TO JOE CONNORS, a commercial real estate expert with McAllister & Associates, the commercial real estate market in the Lakeway/ Lake Travis area is robust, with the availability of new inventory coming on line soon near Falconhead West and at the Galleria Parkway. New supply at The Oaks also provides more options for both new and old businesses. The three businesses featured on these two pages are not new businesses to the area, but they have all recently relocated. Businesses often seek to improve location to increase market share. LAKEWAY/LAKE TRAVIS for certain retail and restaurant businesses, whereas other businesses simply need operational space and do not need street traffic. “Like other real estate markets,” Joe notes, “the commercial market experiences ebbs and flows that reflect a multitude of factors. Commonly, price is the determining factor that impacts occupancy. In a healthy market, the presence of an overabundance of vacancies in a property commonly indicates that they have either been mispriced or, sometimes, their leasing operations have been mismanaged.”
LEADERSHIP LAKE TRAVIS The Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce sponsors an innovative training program for its members called Leadership Lake Travis. The program provides interactive experiences that foster and enhance leadership skill sets on a wide variety of topics instrumental for good business practices. Last December, Steve and Anne Marie Pyle hosted the training—along with a delicious luncheon at The Frog Pad. Speakers included: • Larry McManus, Office of the Governor, Economic Development & Tourism • Philip Robinson, Principal at Covert Automotive Group • Steve Pyle, President & Co-Owner of The Frog Pad Kitchen & Bath Designer Showroom It was an inspiring way to begin to plan for the challenges of 2017 and to supplement an understanding of the leadership skills that will have a positive impact in the future.

Kele also won over $200,000.00 in college scholarship money from NYCDA. In November, Kele applied to the YoungArts Foundation in what was the largest pool of applicants the Foundation has received to date. 691 of the nation’s most promising young artists in the literary, visual, design and performing arts were selected from 40 states. Kele is one of 166 Finalists/winners of the YoungArts Olivia Schuh Foundation’s highest honor, with a potential cash prize of $10,000. Avery Clevlen, age 10, did her first audition for the Joffery Ballet in New York. She was accepted with a 50% scholarship. Jordan Hall and Natalie Wong received 100% Scholarships to Joffery New York. Jordan Hall also auditioned for Hubbard Street and American Ballet Theater and was accepted to both. Alyssa Pratt and Natalie Wong auditioned and were accepted for the American Ballet Theater New York and California. Both dancers were chosen to model for Weissman’s and Dancewear Solutions at NYCDA July 2016 and enjoyed that experience. Olivia Schuh auditioned for Gelsey Kirkland’s school in New York and was accepted to their year-round program. Olivia was also accepted to American Ballet Theater New York. Clarisse Rosenthal attended Juilliard’s Summer Intensive in 2016. Clarisse also auditioned for American Ballet Theater New York and was accepted. Dance Institute’s motto of “Train and Transform” has now been proven time and again. DI provides exceptional training that transforms dancers in as little at 2 years! It is quite unheard of for a school or an institute as young as DI, which was established in 2008 and is not even 10 years old, to be producing dancers of such exceptional quality.
