Ever-present Fathers There is a good side and a bad side to everything. I was recently reminded of that when it comes to home ownership. While it is wonderful to own the place you lay your head at night, the hassle of upkeep and repairs can be daunting. There are times when things occur that make me wish I had the ease of calling a landlord and allowing them to deal with it! A stark reminder of this occurred when the supply hose to the toilet in our master bath broke away from the connection and poured water throughout that side of our home until we discovered it about an hour later. By that time, there was water standing not only in the bathroom, but both of our closets, the bedroom, and it had flowed under the walls into my office and the hallway. Simply put…it was a mess. From the time we were building our home 30 years ago, to anytime I encountered a problem or needed a handyman, I knew it was “dime and a quarter” time. If you knew my dad, you know that was a reference to his phone number. Ending in 1025, he would tell people a dime and a quarter was all they needed to reach him, as a way to help them remember his number. There have been many times in the last four years since his passing I’ve wished for that number to work. During times like those I pause, think for a moment, and decide what it is he would tell me to do. Sometimes I know, and sometimes I do not. And there are times, even now, that he tells me. After the floors were pulled up and the workmen had left, I walked into my office and gasped--as there on the floor, in my Daddy’s handwriting, were notes he had written to workmen when we were building our home in 1992. Over the last four years, I’ve realized Daddy is always with me. Not only in the pennies I find, but the lessons taught, the memories made, and the laughs we sometimes still have at his expense! That love, shared and given so freely, mirrors that of my heavenly Father and for that, I am eternally grateful.

DEAR GABBY I am married to a wonderful woman. She checked all the major boxes I had for finding a perfect wife. However...she squeezes the toothpaste from the middle; hangs the toilet paper under; puts the silverware face down in the dishwasher; and continuously turns the temperature up on the thermostat. These things sound trivial, but add them up, and they’re huge. Is there any solution? PEEVED DEAR PEEVED Are you almost done with all that drama? After that letter, I need an intermission. Life is short; time is fast--no replay, no rewind. Have patience and realize nobody’s perfect (not even you). You may have done something annoying a time, or two, yourself. Look for something positive about your wife every day, even if some days you have to look a little harder. It’s the affection that matters, not the perfection. GABBY

The George Theater’s physical presence is noticeable, especially at night when the lights shine brightly through its giant plate glass windows, illuminating what was once an open field on Westheimer, just west of the Galleria. During the day, the 35,000-squarefoot building sparkles in the sunlight, and the fact it is set back from the road a bit makes it even more eye-catching. It is hard to believe the theater company for which this is home – A.D. Players – began in people’s living rooms. A.D. Players Artistic Director Kevin Dean showed me around The George like someone giving a tour of their house. Inside, the theater is impressive, with its spacious lobby, its 450seat auditorium, and a backstage area filled with props and pulleys that enable the theater techs to “fly” backdrops on and off stage between scenes. To Dean, however, this is just a place to call home for a theater company he has been a part of for literally half his life. Now in its 55th season, A.D. Players has become one of the country’s preeminent community theaters, making a unique name for itself as a theater committed to producing shows with a distinctly Christian worldview. The A.D. in its name often makes people think of the abbreviation for “Anno Domini,” the dating designation to signify years after Christ’s birth. However, in A.D. Players, it actually stands for “After Dinner” and points to its origin as a traveling acting group that would perform in people’s homes in exchange for meals served to them beforehand. Dean shared a bit about the theater company’s
history and the life of its founder and former artistic director. “We were founded in 1967 by Jeannette Clift George, a native of Houston. She was an only child, the daughter of a wildcatter. She decided she wanted to be an actress, so after graduating from the University of Texas, she went straight to New York City. She studied under Harold Clurman and was involved in the theater scene there during the 1950s, a really fascinating time in the history of the theater. Then the Alley Theatre got a grant from the Ford Foundation to bring actors from New York to start a resident company in Houston, and Jeannette came down to audition for it,” Dean said. Dean explained that Nina Vance, the founder of the Alley Theatre, gave her a scene from Golden Boy to read, not realizing Mrs. George had done her college senior thesis on the play. “Of course, knowing the play as well as she did, Jeannette nailed it,” Dean continued. “And Nina Vance came down and told the casting director ‘We’ve got to hire that actress. She has the best cold read I’ve ever seen!’ It wasn’t until years later Nina discovered Jeannette’s prior history with Golden Boy.” Mrs. George became a company member at the Alley Theatre and performed in many of its productions. She eventually got the urge to start something herself. “She was a Christian and couldn’t find plays that really said what she wanted to say about her faith, so she started writing her own plays. In 1967, she started the After Dinner (A.D.) Players.” “The idea was that we will come and perform for you after dinner – after you feed us. It evolved into a touring company where Jeannette and the cast would rehearse in friends’ living rooms and then drive across Texas to perform.” In 1975, Mrs. George was cast in the lead role of Corrie Ten Boom in the movie The Hiding Place. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Golden Apple Award and was named “Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles” by the British Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“That movie pretty much put Jeannette on the map nationally. She got offers to move to L.A., but she wanted to come back and continue to grow the theater, so that’s what she did,” Dean explained. “But because she had gotten some

fame from the movie, she would travel around and speak. And everywhere she went to speak, she would bring the A.D. Players with her, and they would perform. So, they became known as a national touring company.” In 1979, A.D. Players purchased a church building on West Alabama and Kirby, which became Grace Theater, home to the theater’s mainstage productions for the next 40 years. In the early productions, seating was actually in the original church pews. Once A.D. Players established itself as a resident theater company, offering seasons of shows, it expanded to include a theater arts academy, offering a variety of drama classes to children, teenagers, and adults. In 1992, it opened Houston’s first year-round children’s theater. While maintaining its strong presence at Grace Theater in Houston, the acting company continued to tour regionally, nationally, and internationally. In 1997, A.D. Players made its Off-Broadway debut performing George’s original play John, His Story at Lamb’s Theater in New York City. In 2003, A.D. Players purchased the land where the company’s current building sits. After nearly 14 years of fundraising, which was helped along by a $2 million gift from the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, The Jeannette and L.M. George Theater opened in February 2017 with its first production, To Kill a Mockingbird. The building, designed by Houston architect John Gabriel, enabled A.D. Players to double its seating capacity from what it had at Grace Theater, as well as tripling its height backstage to around 75 feet. Attached backstage is a workshop that allows sets to be built on-site, along with an alcove for lights that can project scenery onto screens. In addition to hosting its own performances, A.D. Players also rents out The George to various entities. Also in 2017, Mrs. George, who had served

at local area schools such as First Baptist Academy. It also has a program called Arts for All, for students with cognitive and learning differences.

as its artistic director since A.D. Players’ inception, passed away in December at age 92. Dean was moved into the role of interim artistic director in 2018, and March of 2019 the board of directors unanimously voted to appoint him as the company’s new artistic director.
From productions hosted in people’s living rooms in 1967, A.D. Players has grown to a resident theater company with a preCOVID budget of $4 million, five mainstage productions a year, and a local and regional touring company. Its performing arts academy now offers classes on-campus as well as

Not every story is going to have a happy ending, but is there a through-line of hope, a through-line of faith to some degree or another? We recently did Miracle on 34th Street. It’s about Santa Claus, but the essence of the play is ‘Faith is believing in something when common sense tells you not to.’ We enjoy stories that explore those themes.” To that end, a couple of years ago, A.D. Players launched the Metzler New Works Festival – named after board members Gina and Jeff Metzler, who funded the first three years of the program as a gift to A.D. Players. Dean talks about the festival with excitement, explaining

that the timing of its inception was not ideal due to the pandemic. “With the new play festival, we solicit or commission scripts that explore where faith and storytelling collide,” he explained. “Three of our plays this season were world premieres that were commissioned through the festival – The Christmas Shoes, No One Owns Me, and Apollo 8.” “What’s really cool about the Apollo 8 mission is that it was broadcast live on Christmas Eve to the largest TV audience ever at the time,
and the astronauts read the first seven or eight chapters of Genesis. It was the first time the people on earth had ever seen our planet as viewed from the heavens.” While A.D. Players doesn’t shy away from serious subjects – one of Dean’s favorite plays he performed in is 12 Angry Men, a story of an all-White jury determining the fate of a young Latino boy accused of killing his father – the theater company offers lighthearted material of all sorts as well. Another of Dean’s all-time A.D. Players favorite performances is Charlie’s Aunt, a three-act farce about college kids, one

The annual Sparkle Conference for women began in 2018 and was/is the brainchild of Pastor Sharon Fridge, who came to Conroe First Assembly of God from Kentucky in 2016. She wanted to reach out to women who had suffered rejection, trauma, addiction, abuse, and the feeling of not being enough. Fridge began by creating special events for women throughout the year. At first, women met for dinners together at restaurants and similar activities. However, she and the core leaders of women’s ministry at Conroe First wanted to reach out to women outside the church building. The planners avoided calling the conference by familiar names, because one of the biggest drawbacks can be when the name has “ministries” or another religious tag attached to it. That name sometimes prevents the involvement of folks who may be intimidated or shy away from coming to gatherings where people talk about Jesus. Under the leadership of Pastor Sharon Fridge, a group of 75 volunteers from her church began planning the Sparkle Conference of 2017. They decided the conference would be an annual event and would have a different theme each year. The scripture that inspired the name Sparkle was Isaiah 1:31 “The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.
Since then, the church calls women’s special events Sparkle Events. The first two-day conference was in 2018. As one of the conference planners put it, “The difference between our conference is this gathering is spirit led, and we wait on the Holy Spirit with no agenda. God just moves in a mighty way that touches everyone with whatever need they have. It’s just liberating when you have that freedom to worship and glorify God.” Marsha Loucks attended the 2021 conference and remembers, “The conference was so refreshing. I saw the Holy Spirit move in
amazing ways. Women’s lives were touched. And the worship was amazing.” Marsha is already registered for this year’s event. In 2021, nearly 300 women from 24 churches in Beaumont, Houston, and San Antonio attended the conference. Women who attend the Sparkle Conference become a spark of their own and take it back to their home church. More are expected at the 2022 event on June 3-4. This year’s theme is “Wildly Blessed.” The conference is being hosted by Conroe First Assembly of God at 3993 Interstate 45 (Exit 90) in Conroe. Services start Friday, June 3 at

The main speakers will be Sharon Fridge, conference organizer, and Susanne Cox. Sharon Fridge is an anointed speaker. She is an Ordained Assemblies of God Minister and Co-Pastor of Conroe First, along with her husband Ernest. Sharon ministers across the nation and overseas at conventions, retreats, conference, and church services. She delivers a message that encourages the listener to live a life empowered by God’s Holy Spirit. The heat has arrived, two months earlier than expected. Texas heat calls for Texas tough plants that can take heat, the blistering sun, the elevated soil temperatures, dry soil, and not only thrive, but bloom continuously. Many of these plants are also on the deerproof list (plants that deer generally leave alone until the heat and drought of summer comes…then any living plant is fair game.) Following is a list of tried-and true-favorites: Sun Lovers Annuals - Blooming succulents, such as purslane, portulaca (moss rose), and ice plant (delosperma) thrive in the hottest and driest conditions. These sturdy plants rarely overwinter, but may return with a milder winter. Blue daze, Angelonia, salvia, creeping jenny (filler, thriller, and spiller: a term used in the industry for a cottage arrangement. One plant is taller, one is of medium height but fills the pot, and the other spills down the side). Tropicals – this grouping of plants is stunning (deer love them, too). Hibiscus, dipladenia, mandevilla, bougainvillea, croton, palms are just a few tropical plants that will thrive in blistering heat, but will need consistent watering to be their best. The exception is the bougainvillea. Keep in an area with eight hours plus of direct light, water lightly as the plant begins to wilt. Bougainvillea will not survive planted in the ground, so keep in a pot. A bougainvillea will not bloom until it is rootbound. There are also shade loving, heat tolerant tropicals: bromeliads, Hawaiian tais, and all of the draceana family. Perennials – This large selection of plants ranges from woody stemmed large shrubs that reach heights of 20’ to grassy garden perennials that stay under 24”. The choices are many, since this is what grows best in full sun during July through September in the South. Woody stemmed large perennials/deciduous shrubs – consider vitex, althea, crape myrtles (crapes are available in every size and colors range from white to purple). Red yucca is

a go-to favorite where water is not always available, as is color guard yucca. The graceful red bloom stalks, when placed in groupings, make a “statement” with little care. Expect heights of 4’ + in this category. Perennial Grasses –Yes, all grasses are perennial (a few will be considered annuals with a hard freeze). My favorite grasses of choice are purple fountain grass and gulf muhly (aka pink muhly). Other favorites for intense heat and poor growing conditions are miscanthus, adagio, Aztec, zebra, Mexican feather, and rooster grass. Ornamental grass looks its best in late summer through fall, when they bloom the heaviest. The grasses will become dormant after the first freeze, and green shoots will begin appearing in late April/May. Do not be too quick to write off ornamental grass as a “goner” in the spring. If no growth has appeared by late May, that is a safe time to declare a fatality and replace. Small perennials (under 3’) – Deer proof favorites are Lantana, which comes in every height, size, and color now. Plumbago is another “must have” for a summer garden. The powder blue blooms are profuse on this tough shrub from spring until late fall, and deer stay away. Agapanthus, all varieties of salvia, and sage are also on the deer proof list and thrive in poor soil, high heat and are virtually maintenance free. Shade Lovers If you need a plant that can take a bit of drying out, regular green leaf garden begonias are much tougher than folks realize. Impatiens are also a great option, but water needs are high, and they do best with morning sun and shady after noon. On that same note, caladiums are also very resilient and can withstand a fairly dry environment. Not all caladiums require shade, many varieties will tolerate heavy sun (and not just in the strap leaf varieties). The list of Texas tough plants is immense; your favorite may have been missed. The market is flooded with new varieties; the new distyllium are amazingly tough. Happy Gardening.

The phenomenon known as Rock Steady Boxing began in 2006 when Scott Newman, an Indiana attorney, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 40. With help from his friend Vince Perez, an amateur boxer, he began working out. The intense exercise helped Scott to improve noticeably, prompting him and Vince to form a non-profit organization to help others achieve the same results. By applying Rock Steady Boxing’s program of non-contact boxing workouts, more than 800 affiliated programs across the globe have helped countless people fight back against a debilitating disease. For the estimated one million Americans with Parkinson’s Disease, quality of life slowly worsens as the disease progresses. According to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Parkinson’s Disease is classified as a “movement disorder” because tremors, slow movement, balance issues and stiffness usually occur when nerve cell damage in the brain causes a drop in the level of dopamine—a chemical that coordinates movement. It can also cause memory problems and depression. Parkinson’s Disease, however, is much more. Although it is not considered a life-threatening disease, it can make people more prone to other dangers, such as falls, fractures, and the aspiration of food, which can lead to pneumonia. Because it can encourage a sedentary lifestyle, it may also exacerbate heart disease.
‘An encouraging angel’ Carly Wilson believes in fighting back. After earning a doctorate in physical therapy, she worked with both children and adults for several years before founding the Conroe affiliate of Rock Steady Boxing in August 2019. Participants quickly learned that she is “in their corner.” Wearing T-shirts that say “Fight Back” and “Persevere,” they rotate stations specifically designed to
counter the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. At boxing stations, they work on their jabs, uppercuts, hooks, and backhands. In addition to leading participants through intense workouts, Carly also designs dual-tasking drills that help with cognition, memory, posture, fine motor skills and balance. For example, at one station, participants might write their names in large letters on a whiteboard, then write mirror images of their names. When gloved up, fighters hit a dummy while counting off the hits—by threes. Workouts and drills, Carly says, are designed to be challenging, but every activity can be modified so each individual can be successful. “Carly is an encouraging angel with a great sense of humor,” says Darlene Dufour, who participated in a Rock Steady Boxing program in Louisiana before moving to Conroe. “My idea of exercise is turning the pages of a book. Extreme exercise is keyboarding,” she jokes. “But they make it fun.” The fact that Conroe has a Rock Steady Boxing program helped convince Darlene to move to the area. She calls the affiliated program here “phenomenal”— even better than the program she attended in Louisiana.

Other participants agree. Dick Jones, who lives in the Lake Conroe area, previously attended other programs for people with Parkinson’s Disease. He found them to be excellent, and decided to try Rock Steady Boxing. “I had big expectations and I was right,” he says. “I started off kind of slow but picked up a little and right now I look forward to it a couple of times a week. I think it has really helped me.” Bill Trainor and his wife (and “cornerman”), Linda, acknowledge that it’s hard to get motivated to exercise alone. They drive from The Woodlands to participate in Conroe’s Rock Steady Boxing program. They agree that Carly is

who is “cornerman” to her husband, Wayne. “Other than the exercise, the fellowship has meant a lot,” she says. “We get out of the house, out of the routine. We get to know new people, what they are going through.” She particularly enjoys monthly meetings, where attendees can learn about subjects related to Parkinson’s Disease—such as restless leg syndrome, a recent topic—
and exchange ideas about doctors, medicines and diet. (The PD Fight Club meets the first Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m.) Rock Steady Boxing, therefore, is more than just an exercise program. It’s also a support group. “A lot of fighters suffer from depression and anxiety,” Carly says. “Building that rapport and community is just as important as the exercise.”
Boxing 4 More When Carly saw the big improvements that her fighters were making, she wondered if a similar program might help others. “I saw how they were benefiting from the class and why they were benefiting from it,” she says, “so I wanted to be able to offer a very similar class for other individuals who may want to work on their balance, strength, coordination and posture.” So, she founded Boxing 4 More.

“As we get older, balance and cognition get worse,” she says. Sometimes, gait is affected. “If we don’t practice them daily, we suffer.”

Insurance does not typically pay for Rock Steady Boxing, but many participants find it surprisingly affordable. Although classes meet at the City of Conroe Activity Center, adjacent to the C. K. Ray Recreation Center, it is an independent program. After an initial, one-time $45 assessment, participants pay $60 per month to attend class one day a week, $100 per month to attend twice a week or $130 per month to attend three times a week. Classes are held Monday through
Friday. Carly notes that sessions cost about $12 each—roughly the price of a fast-food meal; however, while a fast-food meal isn’t necessarily beneficial, attending a Rock Steady Boxing class is. Scott Keltner was leery about joining Rock Steady Boxing, and procrastinated for about a year before joining, says his wife and “cornerman,” Connie. “Once we came and observed, he was very into it,” Connie says. “He could tell it was helping.” One participant told Carly that when he retired, he did nothing except sit in front of the TV. “He said since he started coming to Rock Steady Boxing, he can’t sit down at home anymore. Weight Self-Control (by Limiting Your Pie-Hole’s Food Patrol) Any worthwhile endeavor starts with several possible actions to achieve the desired goal. Success is achieved by choosing the spot-on approach and having the resolve to see it to completion. Both the ideation and actions require an understanding of the logic behind the ideal way. The Bible states this truth in Proverbs 5 as, “Get wisdom, get understanding”. Two entities establish our material world: pure energy and material energy. Each can (under the right circumstances) be converted to the other; this conversion is what makes the universe operate and keeps us alive. The living tissue of our bodies is converted to energy that allows us to move about, and we fuel up by consuming material energy. Our body weights clearly are determined by how much fuel we take in. If we take in more energy than we utilize, we gain weight, which is stored as fat tissue. Likewise, fat is released into the bloodstream and used as reserve energy when needed. Fat cells size depends on how much energy (fat) we have stored in them (little storage tanks, if you will). There are three principal types of bodily fuel: fats, sugars, and protein. Fat is high octane; sugar is medium octane; and protein is low octane.
Sugar is absorbed immediately and pushed inside cells. As blood sugar rises, it turns off fat metabolism and is stored as lipid in fat cells. Thus, it has a dual physiologic mechanism for increasing body fat. OH NO.

Reduce the size of your bites, and you will get a tastier meal and be satisfied sooner. I have adjusted to get at least ten bites when eating a cookie. YUM! Continue to chew longer, making each bite last and providing more satisfaction than hurried eating would offer.
Protein starts with less than half the calories as fat and is intended to be building blocks for our bodies; if not needed, it must be converted to energy--and loses ten times as much energy in the conversion to energy step as fat’s consumption (about 30%) and thus it provides only 2.8 calories per gram. Thus, high protein foods reduce calorie intake considerably. PROTEIN IS GOOD FOR WEIGHT CONTROL. Plus, a high protein meal speeds up metabolism for hours afterwards (termed the “specific dynamic action”). High protein meals will promote weight loss, especially at breakfast, when the increased metabolic rate from the protein will boost the daily activities increase and help shrink your fat. All meats have protein, but choose LEAN cuts. Our bodies have two selves--the conscious and the subconscious. The subconscious tells

Step 4: Spoon batter into the prepared muffin cups. Combine 3 teaspoons sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and sprinkle over tops of muffins. Step 5: Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes.

Turning age 65 is quite a milestone. If you are fortunate enough to reach this point in life, you are most likely looking at retirement and considering Medicare options. When people turn 65 and have worked for at least 10 years, they automatically qualify to enroll in Medicare once they retire and plan on taking their social security. Soon after enrolling, they will receive their red, white, and blue Medicare card in the mail. The basic government Medicare offers: Part A, which covers anything hospital related. Most people who have had 10+ years of working experience, are eligible to get this for free. If you don’t qualify for Part A, this can be very expensive. Then, there’s Part B; this covers doctor’s visits, outpatient
services, testing, etc., and most people will pay $170 for their monthly premium for 2022, which comes out of their social security. If you are not on social security, you will be billed this amount.

Creative Corner Facing Death in the Lake’s Edge By Frank Minton
On a warm Saturday last November, I decided to water flowers planted a few days prior, with no thought I was about to face death! Our townhouse in Walden on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas is only ten feet from the water’s edge. With me being a retired Baptist minister, my wife Joyce and I have felt blessed to have lived 17 years in such beautiful surroundings: 180-degree view of the marina with dozens of docked sailboats, the yacht club’s stately building in clear sight, and several large 3-story condos across the water. Walking backward pulling on the water hose, I failed to realize how near I was to the lake’s edge. Suddenly, I plunged backward, headfirst into the cold water, clothes, shoes, and all! The water was up to my chest, and the bulkhead was over a foot higher, with nothing for me to grab onto. Trying to swim to a more acceptable place was not an option. It was over 200 yards to the condo area, and the sailboat docks were higher than the bulkhead wall. Frantically and repeatedly, I bashed my knees against the concrete walls to help lift up my body, but to no avail. I knew I had no chance to get out by myself. My continued calling to Joyce was so weak I just stopped trying. I began moving step by step toward our patio area where our large

windows were located. Perhaps, I thought, Joyce might be able to see me. Suddenly, without warning, I saw a group of happy partygoers. The men were well dressed in slacks, and the women were in high heels and attractive dresses. I thought, “I’ll join them, but what’s all this water doing at a party?” I regained consciousness, stood up, and began moving more slowly toward my goal. As I reached view of the windows, the partygoers appeared again, and this time I was more determined to join them. Again, rushing water invaded the party group. I felt another episode would be my last! Energy and time was running out. As I hung on, I looked up. To my grateful surprise, a lady was standing in front of me. I begged, “That’s my house. Go get my wife!” In a quick minute, Joyce was at the lakeside back door. “Honey, get the stepladder in the utility room,” I weakly called out to her. Joyce retrieved the ladder, which the lady rushed to me. With strength fading and the ladder sinking, I made one step, then two, then a wobbly big step to the white handle of the ladder, pushed with my foot, and crawled onto the deck onto my stomach, so exhausted I couldn’t move.
first responders. As they put me into a waiting ambulance, I saw a fire truck and two squad cars. The force was present! My “guardian angel” had disappeared after the 9-1-1 men appeared. Who was she? My wife only caught her name—Debbie. I spent a week in hospital care with a heart catheterization which revealed no heart attack. My knees were so battered and bruised it took three days before I could walk. Today, reflecting on my near-death experience causes me to feel closer to God. Certainly, God yet has a plan for my life. Perhaps only in a small way, but that’s good enough! I continue to thank him for his “Guardian Angel!” We found her! Debbie is a librarian. She lives in one of the 3-story condos across the lake. She said, “I was on the phone when I saw a big splash, then saw you. I know the lake, knew you were in trouble and couldn’t get out. So, I rushed out and drove my car to your place, calling 9-1-1 on the way.” God bless her! I claim God’s promise in Psalms 91:11, “For he will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” God kept His Word!

Equine Summer Sores Many people do not associate flies with habronemiasis, aka summer sores, granular dermatitis, or jack sores. Summer sores result from a complex association between the horse, the stomach worm, and its intermediate hosts: house, face, and stable flies. Adult stomach worms shed larvae into the environment through the manure of infected horses. These larvae are then ingested by maggots where they develop into adult flies. They reside in the mouthparts of the flies where they are deposited on the wounds or mucocutaneous junctions of horses causing an infection. The classic presentations of Summer Sores are one or more open, draining, ulcerative nodules with swelling, redness, and itching. Generally located on the legs, inner corners of the eyes, lips, sheath, penis, and any moist area or where skin has undergone injury or irritation such as an open wound.
Some horses are shedders, but even a wormed horse can get summer sores. This is because the larvae that cause the massive inflammatory reaction are actually already dead. It is the body’s immune response to the dead larvae that causes the intense itchiness and summer sore formation. The key to therapy is early aggressive treatment! De-bulking is often necessary to remove the dead larvae from the sores. After de-bulking edges of the wound, some need to be injected with corticosteroids subcutaneously. Usually, the infection is aggressive, and therapy has to be repeated. The area needs to be covered at all times (when possible) with a medicated ointment. An oral de-worming product, preferably an avermectin product, needs to be administered once a week for 4 weeks. Fecal counts do NOT detect Habronema larvae. Prevention is the most effective way of

controlling summer sore outbreaks. Fly control is an important step. There are products on the market that are an oral feed additive that acts as an insect growth regulator containing cyromazine. This prevents the larvae from developing into adults. Remove manure, excess feed stuffs, twice weekly to prevent fly breeding sites and the hatching of fly larvae. Insecticides, fly traps and baits, residual fly sprays, fly prevention face masks, and repellents are all beneficial. If you are suspicious that your horse may have summer sores, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible to hopefully stop a small problem from becoming a large problem.

The Father of All Fathers After a several year sabbatical, I took a renewed look recently at my family history and filling in the blanks on the family tree. I was quickly amazed at how technology has advanced our ability to find out more about our ancestors. With just a few clicks, I was able to learn of a 9x great-grandfather who was a provincial governor in Maryland in the mid-1600s! There is certainly value in recognizing family connections and taking time to learn, reflect, and appreciate those relationships. One doesn’t have to look far or have state-of-the-art technology to embrace the ultimate family relationship…it is here now…just as it was in the 1600s and from the very beginning. God, the Father, created a father/child relationship with us and sealed it with blood, making us heirs to the throne and children of the King of Kings! Like our earthly ancestors, there are many things we don’t understand— blanks we can’t fill in yet to understand it all…but we know what we know and we know WHO we know. And that’s a family history that’s a blessing beyond measure.
I remind you, my dear children: Your sins are forgiven in Jesus’ name. You veterans were in on the ground floor and know the One who started all this; you newcomers have won a big victory over the Evil One. And a second reminder, dear children: You know the Father from personal experience. I John 2:12-13
