LADY SAVANT LITTLE BLACK BOOK COVER PHOTOSHOOT By Neepa Sikdar
I was so excited when I heard that Mariel & Brandyn, founders of Lady Savant were going to be on the cover of our summer issue. Their vision for Lady Savant was to create an organization of nice girls who are powerful in sprit and mind that support each other. I can’t think of better cover models for the Little Black Book than these phenomenal ladies. My inspiration for the cover was to add an element of glamour to Mariel and Brandyn’s lives. I wanted to show women that they could be moms of young children, entrepreneurs, and basically super women yet still look pulled together and chic. Like most busy moms, we only had 1 hour to shop and 3 kids to watch over as we ran around the store. I knew that I wanted Mariel in all white because that’s how she describes her summer style and its’ a big TREND this year.
her figure and the sculptural details added a bit of playful whimsy. The dress made her feel thin and feminine and she loved the opportunity to dress up.
I choose a white tulle skirt that was fun and flirty and paired it with a fitted stripe top. This look elongated Mariel’s petite frame and made her feel feminine. Brandyn’s black and white fit and flare dress flattered

It was really important for me to find pieces that they could wear again. The most amazing part was these outfits were under $100 each!

Black and White Looks were the perfect combination for Mariel & Brandyn. It represented YIN & YANG; two ends of the color spectrum. Black and white is a huge fashion trend this year and it’s also symbolic of their friendship. They complement each other as business partners.
The day of our photo-shoot began with hair cut, highlights and makeup for both ladies. We headed to Salon Phoenix owned by Lady Savant member, Celeste Adams.
Fashion photographer Mac Hartshorn from Hartshorn Portraiture was behind the lens. His masterful techniques and hilarious shenigahans kept the girls relaxed resulting in photo perfection. Over all, the girls had a blast
Her team transformed them for everyday moms to glamazon moms. While they were busy getting pampered I was finalizing their head to toe looks.
Celeste, Salon Pheonix : Mariel wanted to keep her length so I just trimmed to remove dead ends and brought up the length of her layers giving her hair more movement For a more sun-kissed look, I added golden tones to her brunette base and added dimension with butterscotch highlights kept softly away from the root. A sexy blowout was achieved by wrapping hair around a round brush and pinning each section to cool for bounce and shine. Brandyn and I both agreed that because she has fine hair, her best look would be a one length haircut just below her chin, which means she will need to grow her existing shorter layers until they reach the target length. To ensure a healthy grow out, I carefully trimmed split ends as needed. Since she wanted to intensify her blonde, I added more highlights, especially to the underneath sections where Brandyn’s hair was darker than the rest. This left her with a more uniform, brighter blonde result.

RANDI LEVIN CPC, ELI-MP Randi Levin Life Coaching Reinvent. Refresh. ReYOU! RandiCLevin@gmail.com I love what I do for several reasons. I believe that as women, we evolve and change with each decade we experience. Being a transitional/reinvention coach and inspirational speaker allows me to partner with my clients to help them step away from the revolving doors in their lives and move forward in refreshing their story. Coaching is my reinvention and I am passionate about it. I love to make my clients and my audiences “think” and know that they have choices. It is my joy to work with my clients so that they come up with their own solutions. That is where the magic begins! I had been long married and a stay at home mom. I had not been working outside of the home in a traditional way. My now ex- husband and I had been involved in some entrepreneurial ventures, but none that provided me the necessary skill sets needed for that polished resume that was going to get me the high paying job I thought I needed. Not to mention, I was used to being the primary caregiver for my boys, and I really wanted to continue in that role. I was truly afraid at first. When I thought about the skills and power that I DO have...it became clear to me that I could form my own business. With the assistance and support of others I have been able to create for myself a thriving business

KOMAL SHAH, PH.D. CEO, Clap Clap Apps CEO, MYNA USA Founder, Edgewater Life When I first came to this country 15+ years ago, the cultural, social and personal dilemmas that I faced as an immigrant pushed me into pursuing a doctoral program where I explored culture, language, food, and traditions, and the pressures of passing on those traditions while living abroad. Not surprisingly then, all my entrepreneurial ventures attempt at making culture more accessible. My first company, Cook Aunty connected folks with multi-cuisine chefs; Clap Clap Apps introduces culture and language to children via the world of Anika and Sid; and MYNA endeavors to bring cultural motif symbols to home products. Why do you love what you do? Because I follow my heart! Over the years, I have found that working on things that I am passionate about is deeply satisfying. Working on an app that helps Indian kids understand Indian culture though games and interactions resonates with me on a personal level. So does bringing high quality home décor products to the US, which are both functional and useful. My advice to all entrepreneurs is: Have patience. Every business idea takes time! SAHAR GHAVAMI Entreprenuer Sghavami@moondan.com I am an entrepreneur at heart and always looking to evolve through self improvement, taking risks, and doing what makes me truly happy. I started my new business venture, Moondani, to introduce the world to Moondan, a completely natural and very effective breath spray. I see excitement in trying new things and taking risks. I love an adventure and always looking to step out of my comfort zone as that is where things happen.
JUANITA PALADRINO Spirtiual Life Coach I am an accomplished spiritual life coach using my abilities as a psychic astrologer to guide people thru life. On several occasions I have been know to connect to the spirit world and am able to bring messages to my clients from their loved ones that have passed away. Favorite Quote: “The most difficult paths to take in life always leads us to our true happiness.” LOUISE BUZZELLI Mozart to Monet www.mozarttomonet.com When I was a little girl I loved to sing! I auditioned for LaGuardia High School of Music & the Arts, and was accepted and after graduating, I went onto Berklee College of Music in Boston, and fell in love once again! My years at Berklee, are very close to my heart…, but they were bitter sweet years, as my mother, Josie, the biggest inspiration in my life, was diagnosed with cancer I left Boston, and also left behind what I loved most, my music… It was still with me, but burried deep inside for a long time. Until one day I found it again! I found it while attending a Yoga class! I remember asking myself a question: “If you could do anything in the world with your life, what would it be?” The answer: “It would be enjoying special moments with my husband, my 2 little girls, my mother, Music, Art & NYC!!” At that moment, Mozart to Monet was born! I realized that “I” was the only one holding back my happiness, my dreams, my inspiration!

#SAVANT MANTRA // MANTRA
WHAT’S YOUR MANTRA? A mantra can be a word or a sentence which, when uttered in a particular manner and contemplated within, can make sorrows fade while uplifting your spirit. The ladies of Lady Savant share their personal favorite sayings.
1. Linda Plastina “A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on its own wings. always believe in yourself.” -Anonomys 2. Jennifer Sutton “At the moment of commitment, the universe conspires to assist you.” 3. Laney Fiestal Morpurgo I often quote poet Emily Dickinson: “I dwell in possibility.” -Emily Dickinson 4. Phyllis Lasser A bell once rung can’t be unrung. “I try never to say anything I will regret later.” 5. Carmen Diaz Pfeiffer “Be the change you want to see in the world!” ~Mahatma Gandhi 6. Connie Rojas Franzen “I change my thoughts, I change my world.” 7. Sylva Derbarghamian Ortiz “I will never look down on anyone unless I am reaching down to pull them up.”
8. Rossy Guzman “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.” -Marianne Williamson
everyone else is taken” -Charles Shultz 10. Janeen Torres “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it (choose your actions or reactions wisely)” 11. Shweta Ghuge “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference” -Robert Frost

PARTNERSHIPS 101:
SHOULD YOU GO INTO BUSINESS WITH YOUR BFF? by Mariel Alvarado
randyn and I have been partners for almost three years and best friends for over six years. We started our journey together when we were neighbors by painting furniture out of our garage. When the kids were down for the day, we popped open a bottle of wine and put our “DIY’er” hat on! Since then, we have been involved in three more businesses: Lady Savant, Her Wine Project and most recently LS, The little Black Book magazine. Wow...I’m almost out of breath just saying it! A business partner can be defined as a person who shares the same vision, risks and responsibilities. Having the right business partner is EVERYTHING and it’s actually very similar to having the right husband/partner if you know what I mean (wink). The right business partner brings a plethora or gifts with him/her such as ideas, creativity, resources, connections and last but not least, and probably the most important, a load of fun. This person can make your life and business not only successful but more meaningful as well. Isn’t that why you want to go into business for yourself anyway? Have you ever asked yourself if you should partner up with your best friend? We say go for it but only if you think you can follow a few of these guidelines. 1. TOTAL TRANSPARENCY. We share business emails and an account or two... I know...weird right? Maybe. But it’s been a lifesaver. With 5 boys between us, we don’t have time to catch up on everything. We found that sharing an email kept us on the same page. It also helped us pick up each other’s slack when answering emails etc. At the end of the day...We know we have each other’s back and there are no secrets between us.
2. MAKE SURE ONE OF YOU IS YIN & THE OTHER YANG We have opposite personalities, strengths and weaknesses BUT, we have the same CORE VALUES. We’re two Texas born and bread ladies. We mean what we say, say what we mean, and we are never rude about it. We also laugh...a lot. 3. RESPECT No matter what, we respect each other and each others ideas. Brandyn often has ideas at about 6:30 AM. Sometimes she texts me with them and I wait to be sound awake before I answer! No matter what the circumstances are respect is HUGE. 4. LOVE If you love your partner as a person and you love what you do, well...that makes it a whole lot easier!! Love makes the world go round and it certainly does the same in business. 5. FORGIVENESS I can’t tell you how important this is. We each make mistakes all the time! It’s important to forgive your partner and allow them room to make these mistakes because this is how growth sometimes happens. Never throw your partner under the bus in front of others either. Instead, protect them and back them up. That’s what a true partner does! Overall, don’t expect having a business partner who is your BFF to be a walk in the park, though. Expect to be challenged. Expect to explore and grow together. Have we ever argued? In mild ways, YES. Disagreed? YES. Cried to each other? ABSOLUTELY. Picked up each others’ slack? Without a doubt! We’ve each been pregnant within our time as partners and have five boys under six years old between the two of us. Our lives are hectic to say the least! However, our partnership is one of the reasons our business blossoms. Partnerships are all about flexibility and caring about your company’s vision more than your personal agenda. Checking your ego at the door is a must.

FAMILY PRENEURS // #FAMILY PRENEURS
FAMILY PRENEURS Jennifer and Mac Hartshorn with daughters, Madeline & Cameron “PICTURE-Perfect Family-preneurs Jennifer Hartshorn is the matriarch behind Hartshorn Portraiture; a boutique family portrait studio in Hoboken owned by herself and her husband Mac. Upon meeting Jennifer, you know you are in the presence of a savvy and very sweet business lady capable of balancing marriage and business in one single relationship! How did this happen? Read ahead!
01. How did you and your husband Mac decide to start a business?
{24}
I am originally from the UK but arrived in the USA over 25 years ago.We moved from Miami to Hoboken to start a family. My husband, Mac, was a fashion photographer and I ran his business and represented photographers. I had been spending a fair amount of time in NYC so this felt like a logical place to settle. We found out that I was pregnant the day we arrived in Hoboken which was a bit of a shock as we did not know anyone as yet. Six months after the baby was born - another
shock- pregnant again. We realized that our career paths were not conducive to raising a family. I worked long hours and Mac travelled a great deal. Hoboken is full of children and I suppose that is how we came up with the idea of opening a boutique family portrait studio in Hoboken. For a while I tried to juggle two kids, the fashion business, my business and the new studio. Needless to say- changes had to be made. I closed my business and we were able to phase out the fashion photography as our portrait studio became successful.
02. What your typical day is like? My typical day starts with working out before heading the the office. I handle the marketing and sales and my husband is the photographer. I try to get home anywhere between 3.30 and 5pm. Our children are 13 and 14 years old and go to a school 2 blocks away so they are capable of getting home on their own. Great quality of life! Often I have to come back to the studio and meet with clients but I still feel that I get to spend some quality time with our girls.
03. How do you manage working with your hubby? It is tough working with your husband. Patience and respect are two major things that I focus on in our working relationship. My husband loves the fact that the girls see us working to provide a home and food on the table and he hopes that this will help to give them good work ethic as adults. The girls have started working with us already! Once a year we hold a fundraiser. The girls offer dog portraits and all the proceeds go to the Liberty Humane Society. They are pretty good photographers!
