The City of Kyle was founded in 1880 by nearby settlers from the communities of Blanco and Mountain City.

Fergus Kyle, for whom the town was named, and the family of David Moore donated 200 acres of land for a town site when the International and Great Northern Railroad built a line from Austin to San Antonio. Lots were first sold in October 1880 at an auction held beneath a Live Oak tree at 204 Sledge Street. And thus the rich history and tradition of Kyle began.

Kyle is now a booming community and home to thousands of citizens. Straddling I-35, eight miles north of San Marcos and 20 miles south of Austin, Kyle is the second largest city in Hays County. Approximately 60 miles north of San Antonio, 200 miles west of Houston and 250 miles south of Dallas, the community of Kyle enjoys a south central location convenient to most major population centers in Texas. With a strategic location close to major highways, airports and rail, Kyle is a great community in which to live.

Where it all began...

Claiborne Kyle Log House Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Mississippi Senator Claiborne Kyle and his wife, Lucy’s, home, built in 1850 How did a Mississippi Senator end up in Texas? It’s a tale of embezzlement and betrayal by an old friend. When Mississippi State Treasurer, Robert Graves, disappeared after being accused of embezzlement, Claiborne Kyle was left as the co-signer on Graves’ bond.

The forfeit on the bond proved to be financially disastrous, and it left Kyle no choice but to sell off all of his property and flee Mississippi for a new life in Texas.

What remains today is the log house. Built by slave labor, it is made up of cedar logs, square notched at the corners. Between the logs, alternating grout of rock and caliche was applied. Aesthetically, the Claiborne Kyle Log House is square-barbell shaped with two matching double room sections separated by a 10 by 6-foot dogtrot. This layout is extremely rare, and in fact, this “linear four-pen dog trot” is the only one of its kind left in Texas. It is highlighted in the Terry Jordan book “Texas Log Buildings: A Folk Architecture.”

Katherine Anne Porter House Location: 508 Center Street The childhood home of one of the most celebrated short story writers

One of America’s most distinguished writers, Katherine Anne Porter, lived in this house on Center Street from 1892-1901.

Porter was born on May 15, 1890, in Indian Creek, Texas. When she was two years old, her mother, Mary Alice Jones Porter, passed away. Her father, Harrison Boone Porter, moved the family to Kyle to live with his mother, Catherine Ann Skaggs Porter.

Katherine lived in Kyle until 1901, when her grandmother passed away.

In 1906, at the age of sixteen, she married John Henry Koontz. The marriage ended soon after. She left Texas in 1915, moving to Chicago to start a career as a journalist and writer. Her first short story “María Concepcíon” was published in 1922. Her first book of short stories “Flowering Judas and Other Stories” was published

in 1930. Her 1962 novel “Ship of Fools,” made her a millionaire. She won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for “The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter” in 1965. In all, she published five major collections of short stories in her lifetime.

Porter returned to Texas to visit her former homes in her later years and, in accordance with her request, upon her death in 1980, her ashes were interred next to her mother’s grave in the Indian Creek Cemetery.

The Katherine Anne Porter House was designated as a National Literary Landmark on June 13, 2002, by the Friends of Libraries USA and the Library of Congress. First Lady Laura Bush was on hand at the dedication.

Blanco Chapel

Location: Private ranch west of town. Not open to the public.

The Blanco Chapel served as a church and school until the 1880s In 1865, Major Ezekiel Edward Nance built a masonry structure of native limestone with walls 18 inches thick to serve both as a school and church. Nance was the owner of a cotton gin, gristmill and meatpacking plant, which provided coarse cotton and meat to the Confederacy.

Inside of the building (now restored and owned by the McCoy family), carved in rock over the opening of the fireplace, is

a star and the word “Wisdom.”

Into the exterior wall on the front of the building a small cross of limestone was placed. Beneath the cross is a squared stone bearing the inscription BLANCO CHAPEL ERECTED 1865 BY EZEKIEL NANCE. The Blanco Chapel was designated as a recorded Texas Historical Landmark in 1965.

Old D.A. Young Building Location: 108 S. Burleson First permanent store in Kyle

The building is named after its builder, David Alexander Young. When the International and Great Northern Railway came into Kyle, Young and his wife, Fannie Elizabeth, moved here from Mountain City and ran a general merchandise business at this location in 1880. It was the first permanent structure in Kyle.

In 1936, this building was given to the Kyle Volunteer Fire Department by rancher M. G. Michaelis. It has also been the home of the Texas Game Warden Association and the Kyle Police Department. The building now houses Hope & Love 4 Kids.

Kyle Auction Oak

Location: 204 S. Sledge Where business lots and most of Kyle’s residential lots were sold at auction Between 1870 and 1880, the International and Great Northern Railroad planned to construct a line between Austin and San Antonio. When the planners found that no towns lay on the route between San Marcos and Austin, they decided to establish a station town along the route. Several offers of land in northern Hays County were received, but the offer by the families of Captain Fergus Kyle and D. R. Moore was accepted.

All of the land, except a depot site and track right-of-way, was then deeded to the Texas Land Company for development as a town. In less than a week, the town was surveyed and a plat recorded with the county clerk. Streets and alleys were added and the town was officially designated as Kyle, Texas, in honor of one of the men who donated the land.

Captain Kyle was a native of Mississippi and had served as a captain with Terry’s Rangers in the Civil War. In the shade of this mammoth live oak, all of the business lots and most of Kyle’s residential lots were sold at auction. As an added inducement, the railroad offered free train rides to participants in the sale. The land on which this historic tree stands was donated by the railroad in June 1881 for the construction of the town’s first school, Kyle Seminary.

Kyle Cemetery

Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Oldest community cemetery in Hays County Thought to be Hays County’s oldest community cemetery still in use, the Kyle Cemetery is located on Old Stagecoach Road just outside of Kyle. While there are a couple of family cemeteries in the county established earlier, the Kyle Cemetery is the oldest community cemetery and remains available to anyone who wishes to purchase a burial spot.

Kyle Cemetery was established after two burials had been conducted on the grounds, and Colonel Claiborne Kyle donated fifteen acres of land for a “community burial ground.” One of the burials had been his “adopted” son, Willie Parks, who died in 1849. The other burial was conducted prior to Parks’ and is that of an unidentified man whom Colonel Kyle’s ranch hands found hanging from a very large oak tree on the grounds. The tree is now referred to as “The Hanging Tree.”

The Kyle Cemetery holds the remains of some of the earliest Hays County settlers, including: Major Edward Burleson – Veteran of the Mexican War and probably one of the most prominent men in the history of this area, and Fergus Kyle – Colonel Claiborne Kyle’s son and the person for whom the town of Kyle was named.

Kyle Family Pioneer Cemetery (Slave Cemetery) Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) African-American cemetery adjacent to part of the Kyle Cemetery This old African-American cemetery, adjacent to Kyle Cemetery, had an official name change in December 2007. Referred to for decades as the “Slave Cemetery” by the few locals who were even aware of it, the site, in fact, has no surviving tombstones indicating slavery-era deaths, though the slave-holding Claiborne Kyle family lived nearby starting in about 1849, suggesting there may have been slave burials here.

When Hays County Historical Commission members first searched the site in 1989 on a county-wide inscription project, they found 16 tombstones, “most of which were turned over, broken, or nearly covered with debris.” They noted that death dates on several stones were early enough for their subjects to have once been in slavery (the earliest date is an 1873 death of 12-year-old William Davis), but the majority of survivng stones are of later origin.

Skyview Cemetery Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Cemetery of the area’s African-American citizens

A large and well-kept cemetery stil in use covering about four acres located just north of the Kyle Cemetery, the Skyview Cemetery is the final resting place for many of Kyle’s African-American citizens.

Within the cemetery, there are over 170 marked graves with stones, funeral home markers, or wooden crosses. Uninscribed limestone rocks and bricks mark some graves. Additionally, there are several sunken areas indicating burials.

The oldest marked grave is that of Mary Kirby, 1895, followed by Hattie Washington and Annie Hamilton, 1899. It is likely that burials occured between these dates, but the graves are not marked.

San Vicente Cemetery

Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Cemetery marking the burial of the area’s Hispanic citizens The San Vicente Cemetery has over 220 graves with inscriptions as well as many unmarked graves and graves with uninscribed markers. It is located on Old Stagecoach Road just south of the intersection of County Roads 136, 225, and Center Street.

The land for the San Vicente Cemetery was donated in the early 1900s by Vicente Gonzales to insure that early Hispanic citizens of Kyle would have a proper burial.

An initiative was set forth by Blas Mendez to establish this cemetery, and it was also at his urging that it be named after the man who donated the land. Until Gonzales donated the land, most Hispanics were buried on the property owned by the ranchers who employed them. There are untold numbers of unmarked burial plots all over Hays County.

The railroad still runs through it

T

he surreys and wagons came swaying to a halt near the double iron runners which was the brandnew International & Great Northern Railroad. First-comers unhitched the horses and mules and led them back to tie them at a point where they would not be frightened by the train. The tardy would have to take other protective measures. The ladies had packed wicker baskets with fried chicken, deviled eggs, potato salad, and the usual cakes, pies, and home-baked bread. Their children and grandchildren lurked near the baskets, thinking more of the picnic which would climax the celebration than they thought of the coming of the trian.

But Mammy, the guardian-angel servant of the Haupt family had no greater wish for the day than to see that train come in and stop. She had heard there was a fire inside the train, heating a boiler that was like a huge teakettle. While folks said that it was that boiler that produced steam and made the train go.

Mammy wanted to see that train, that boiler, and that firebox.

While she was gazing down the track, her young charge got away, joining the group of boys who swarmed onto the tracks and got down on their hands and knees, listening to the rails to hear the distant train. Mammy descended on Lewis, her charge.

She picked him up by the seat of his pants and took him squirming back to the tongue of one of the parked wagons. There she proceeded to give the boy a good tongue lashing while promising what would happen if he repeated his actions. The women, laughing with excitement, chatted incessantly, admiring a new bonnet, exchanging recipes, anticipating with great expentancy the arrival of the train.

Mammy kept her eye on Lewis. The October sun felt good to her. She was half asleep when she heard the hooting whistle at last.

That monstrous train came on roughly, shrilly. At the last minute Mammy had the impression that it was not going to stop. Like a raging bull it bellowed and moved swiftly, unheeding. It could not see the crowd of families waiting to welcome it.

Without stopping to think, Mammy ran out to head off that raging bull. She stepped on that track, waving her starched, white apron, determined not to let the train go past. If she had not been pulled back by men from the crowd, the brakes of the train

might not have held – might not have spared her serious injury.

But she was pulled back and saved; nor was she even properly scolded. The crowd was too greatly excited, too enthusiastic about the arrival, at last, of the train which would serve to bring this

Mammy, Lewis Haupt, and all of the others who had assembled on that day in October, 1881, to welcome the train were participants in an event that was to change the face of life for the communities of Blanco and Mountain City. They had come together at this spot not only to celebrate the arrival of the train, but also to attend the auction of town lots. A city plat of eighteen blocks had been filed on September 7, 1880, by the surveyor, Martin, Groos, and great plans had been talked up by the promoters of the new town. Here the train would give daily passenger and freight service, and all of the advances of a better life would be offered to the settlers. Such amenities could not be brought into existence too soon to please the tastes of the settlers’ wives, who had endured great hardships in order to see the land developed into the stock-raising paradise which is now was.

The town of Kyle started as a railroad stop and has grown to a vibrant city exploding at the seams.

In the first two years after its founding, Kyle grew to more than 500 residents, an incredible number in its day. In the century since its founding – from 1880 to 1980 – the census of the town was three thousand.

Today, it is difficult to get an accurate population count of the city. With Hays

County being the third fastest growing county in the nation – and the I-35 corridor of Hays County being the past growing portion of Hays County – Kyle leads the way in growth and development.

Working with the Chambers and the Greater San Marcos Area Partnership, businesses come to Kyle daily to serve its burgeoning population.

The city has always been tied to the transportation routes and its mere geographical setting. In the beginning, agriculture was the primary industry in

Kyle. The geographical location has the city sitting on the very southern portion of the Texas blackland prairie. But quickly moving west out of Kyle, the landscape changes to the starker limestone hills of the Edwards Plateau, otherwise known as the Texas Hill Country. Here, ranches take over, and the brands on the I-35 bridges near Kyle attest to the many cattle ranches that grew through the years in the town.

During recent decades Kyle’s growth continued because of the burgeoning

city to the north – Austin (Kyle residents commuted in to Austin for jobs). But today Kyle growing its own industry.

With hospital and medical facilities sprouting up around the I-35/Kyle Parkway intersection, supporting industries are flooding the city, which is becoming known for its medical dominance.
