Katy Dog Suites

New luxury home suites opening in Katy soon By Jimmy Galvan

O

ne of the largest luxury home suites is making its way to the Katy area and should be ready to open in the coming days. These suites are not meant to offer state-of-the-art care for humans. “We offer indoor and outdoor boarding,” said Chief Operating Officer Lisa Sebree. “It allows for a more natural environment for the dogs.” Co-owner Malcolm Macaulay believes Katy Dog Suites will revolutionize the way dogs are boarded in the future. “Most boarding facilities are concrete, and the dogs don’t have ready access inside to outside,” Macaulay said. “The inside of the suite is wood with linoleum on it and it is air conditioned and heated in the winter months.” The Katy location will offer 320 suites and sits on 20 acres located at 28785 Clay Road. The owners of Woodlands Dog Suites in Magnolia have teamed up with the owners of the luxury home and commercial builders Buster and Cogdell to build one of the largest boarding facilities in the United States in Katy. The idea for Katy Dog Suites is based on many designs that originated in Australia. “My business partner (co-owner Robert Sherlock) went to 20 different facilities in Australia and broke down what makes those facilities stand out above the rest,” Macaulay said. “He picked the finest innovations and made this facility.” When Sherlock returned to the U.S., he formed smaller dog facilities featuring these ideas and later sold off those facilities to open up the facility in The Woodlands with 160 kennels. “We will be adding all those innovations, plus a few more, into the Katy facility,” Macaulay said. The plan is to keep as many trees as possible on the property

8 / K a t y To d a y / S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 7

and keep the facility away from the road for more safety and privacy for the dogs. The complete layout of the facility has been designed for dogs, with only 10 suites per air-conditioned building, and each suite has its own window and easy-out dog door that allows all guests to go into their backyard whenever they want. “There will also be two lakes located on the property so when the dogs are out for their playtime, they can enjoy the lake, as well,” Sebree said. Katy Dog Suites does not charge extra for playtime, feeding or medicating, but does for bathing. Standard suites are priced at $35 for one guest. The larger suites are priced at $55 per guest. Another added feature is that experienced managers live on site, so pick-up and drop off are allowed by appointment. Matt and Alicia Segari will serve as co-managers at the Katy Dog Suites and bring more than 12 years of experience in running dog facilities. “This is a big step from working at The Woodlands’ facility,” Matt Segari said. “We have to make sure the animals are taken care of and bringing the people into the facility to make sure they know our presence,” said Alicia Segari. Macaulay said one reason the Katy location will present a bigger challenge than The Woodlands is because of the size. Macaulay said the areas that have been chosen based on population and the disposable income available in those areas. “We find that most of the areas are the people that have pets and can afford to have them,” Macaulay said. “These are luxury dog suites and these dogs will have a lot more freedom and will have their own grass. Most people associate kennels with having a bad smell and you won’t have that at Katy Dog Suites.”

No Label - The Brewery with a Heart

By Trish Johnson

When the idea of becoming brewmasters was still just formulating in their minds, the folks behind Katy’s one-andonly brewery already knew they had two important goals they had to reach. First, they had to produce the highest quality brews they could, and second (and equally important), they wanted to be the best citizens of Katy’s business community possible. Now, just seven years after launching No Label Brewing Company on First Street in Katy, Brian and Jennifer Royo find themselves with very little spare time between operating the brewery and meeting their community, charitable and family commitments. Yet the couple seems to thrive on their jam-packed schedule as they watch their dream-become-reality continue to grow. Natives of the greater Houston area, the couple was systematic in their search for a brewery location, Brian said. “We looked at a bunch of places before we decided,” he said. “At that time, there were only two microbreweries in the

Houston area: Southern Star in Conroe and St. Arnold’s in Houston. “But we kept coming back to Katy. When it came down to it, we knew Katy was the best choice. We wanted to be in Katy because of its history, because of the community,” said the 1996 Katy Taylor High School grad. Nestled in among Katy’s signature rice dryers, No Label is only a few hundred feet from its original location. ““At first, we were a little further west than we are now,” Brian said, “but we were still in the rice dryers. We got a little more space and more parking when we moved to our current location about a year ago.” The beer-brewing bug bit Brian, who is 39, when he was studying for his degree in construction management at the University of Houston where, coincidentally, he met fellow student Jennifer, now 35. “My roommate had a beer-brewing kit,” Brian remembered, “so I guess I first got interested in it by helping him out.” By the time his 30th birthday rolled around, Brian got his own home-brewing kit and the couple (who married in 2007,

a year after they graduated from UH) started scoping out the two breweries already in operation in the Houston area. “I guess we started going to St. Arnold’s around 2006,” said Brian, who was working as a construction project manager, just as he had while going to college. “Well, Brian had set up his first brewery in his ‘mancave’ – the garage – and we were already home-brewing,” Jennifer said. “We’d make different beers and try them out on our parents and friends. That’s about the time Brian decided he really wanted to be a brewmaster.” Granted a brewery license by TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) in 2010, No Label Brewing Company opened with the help of a few investors: friends, family and business associates willing to back the dream. “We were the third microbrewery to open in the Houston area when we opened,” said Brian. “Now there are about 45 of them.” Meanwhile, Jennifer’s degree in hotel and restaurant management from the Hilton school at UH comes in handy as she handles the brewery’s marketing. “We have companies to handle our printing and labeling and such, but Jennifer is the brains behind the marketing,” Brian smiled. The operation is expected to receive its new brewpub license from TABC momentarily. “The brewpub license limits those facilities to no more than 10,000 barrels a year,” Jennifer said. “We’re right at about 6,500-7,000 barrels a year right now, so it’s perfect for us.” By comparison, Jennifer noted they only brewed 500 barrels the first year they were in operation. “Things really jumped in 2013. We quadrupled our output from 1,000 barrels a year to 4,000 barrels a year,” Jennifer said. “We submitted our financials to the University of Houston’s ‘Cougar 100,’ the top 100 Cougar-owned businesses, and we were No. 6. “We’re at a good place right now,” Jennifer said, noting the brewery now has 15 employees. “We can be active in our community and still please our investors.” The U of H grads are set to introduce “Brew of H” – a pale ale whose name is actually owned by Brewheart Apparel (who asked No Label to brew the actual product), at the school’s first home game of the 2017 season, Sept. 16. Also in the works is “El Jefe,” a German-style Hefeweizen which Jennifer describes as “like a Blue Moon with notes of banana, citrus

and cloves.” Even with the family now numbering four (with the addition of f4-year-old Travis and 10-month-old Joseph), the couple hasn’t forgotten their original credo to give back to the community. The brewery’s Summer Tailgate in mid-August brought in approximately 1,500 people to enjoy live music, a silent auction, festival food and, of course, locally brewed beer, proceeds from which are to benefit the Katy YMCA’s “Operation Backpack,” which assists youngsters in need of school supplies for the coming year. Additionally, the brewery participates, with other city businesses, in Katy Market Days on the third Saturday each month. “I’m also on the committee which is organizing the city’s Old-Fashioned Christmas, set for Dec. 2 in old Katy,” Jennifer noted. “We also do what we can for KISD, including the booster clubs, and other local groups.” “Teacher Tuesday” means $1 off any beer for teachers, and

the brewery also offers a 50 percent discount to active-duty military members. Currently, the taproom is open for business six days a week: 3-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday; Saturday’s tours are from noon to 3 p.m., with the taproom open until 10 p.m. “Those times are subject to change, though,” Brian noted, “to make room for private parties and other events. We get busier when the weather gets better.” The couple has solid plans for the near future, they said, including more televisions before football season starts, more bathrooms, shade and seating. “We consider ourselves a family business,” Brian said. “On Saturdays we have folks bring the whole family, including the dog. More than anything, our atmosphere is ‘family’ and ‘community.’ “We just feel really great about being a part of the Katy community,” he added, “and we want to do whatever we can for our community.”

Katy ISD

welcomes new leadership at two Katy schools

By Valerie Sweeten

T

wo of Katy ISD elementary schools will be welcoming new principals this year. Veteran educators, Doreen Martinez and Rahshan Smith are excited to get the new school year underway. DOREEN MARTINEZ: PRINCIPAL AT MEMORIAL PARKWAY ELEMENTARY Doreen Martinez decided to pursue a career in education as a senior in high school. When an “amazing teacher” encouraged her to pursue the dream, Martinez embraced the idea. With the added support of her husband of 33 years, Martinez took on

1 8 / K a t y To d a y / S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 7

the challenge. In 1989, she began her educational career teaching in Pasadena ISD and later went on to work in Angleton ISD, Clear Creek ISD and as a grant/technology coordinator in Royal ISD. Martinez came to Katy ISD in 2001, where she served as an instructional technology facilitator, technology training supervisor, Parent & Patron Center Coordinator and then as an assistant principal at Morton Ranch Junior High. In 2015, Dr. Martinez returned to Angleton ISD as Principal of Angleton Junior High. Inspiration through the years came through many people for Martinez. From Mr. O.D. Tompkins at Mayde Creek High School who

demonstrated the “importance of having a heart for kids,” to Dr. Linda Menius at Beck Junior High, one of the first female principals in Katy, that “showed me that with hard work and perseverance anything could be accomplished.” She also credits Mark McCord at Morton Ranch Junior High for the lesson in “the constant goal of helping ALL students achieve success.” Martinez has high expectations for students and staff with the highest resting solely on her shoulders at Memorial Parkway Elementary. “I am the one who is accountable for the academic success of every student in the building. I am 100 percent committed to serving my students, parents, teachers and staff in making our campus an exceptional, award winning and high-achieving campus. My goal is to work together with my school family to make Memorial Parkway ‘The best school in the land!’” RAHSAN SMITH: PRINCIPAL AT POLLY ANN MCROBERTS ELEMENTARY Rahsan Smith, a Katy ISD graduate, is a firm believer that his education in this district prepared him to “compete on all levels in the real world.” When his mother, a retired bilingual educator with a Master’s degree, gave him a glimpse into the field of education as a career path, Smith embraced it. His goal was to deliver not only a “top-notch educational experience,” but also be able to provide opportunities for students to “fell motivated, loved, nurtured and challenged to their full potential.” With his mother’s guiding hand, Smith chose his path. “Growing up, I saw firsthand the love that she had for her students year after year,” Smith said. “Her motto was ‘Every student can succeed, it’s my job to show them how they can be successful.’”

He began his career with Houston ISD in 2001 serving as a literary specialist and intermediate classroom teacher at JFK Elementary. Smith later worked with Pre-K students at Gabriela Mistral Early Childhood Center and as a student behavior specialist at Fondren Middle School. His career in Katy ISD began in 2012 as an assistant principal at Mayde Creek Junior High, a principal for Katy Summer Academic Term 2016/2017, and then as assistant principal at Seven Lakes High School. Smith’s inspiration over his 17 years in education has evolved over time. “As we get to know our students, you learn that each student comes to you with unique needs and abilities. What is not so difficult to understand is that it is the kids themselves that motivate and inspire you to continue your career path as an educator,” he said. Helping students to learn and achieve their goals is what keeps Smith’s heart in his job. “It is truly a joy to come to work every day and work with kids,” he said. “Their spirit gives you a lift that no other force can. The smiles, the laughter and the individual personalities brought to school by our students is an amazing experience. I am sincerely thankful to every student whose life I have been blessed to be a part of. They are the reason I enjoy the field of education.” Smith’s new position as principal at McRoberts Elementary has him more than excited, and he’s up for the challenge. “The higher up in education you go the more responsibilities you take on. I now have the responsibility to make decisions that will help our kids become better people. My goal for all of my students is summed up in one word, ‘growth.’ I want every student that walks through these doors to grow intellectually and as an overall person,” Smith said.

The Love of Reading Little Book Buddies at Katy and Maud Marks

By Tom Behrens

L

ooking for a chance for your kindergarten through third-grade child to share the joy of reading this fall? The Little Book Buddies program is taking applications for spots in this free program. The program pairs a child with a trained adult or teen volunteer to meet on a weekly basis to read together for 45 minutes. Little Book Buddies is a 10-week program. Buddies meet once a week for 45 minutes, one-on-one for shared reading. “The final session is a big celebration where we invite all the parents,” said Misty Wraght, children librarian at Katy Library. “We share about what their child has been reading, do an activity in the library, and the kids get to choose a pretty gift

box to take home to their own personal libraries.” Wraght describes what happens when the child and trained volunteer read together. “They just read together, adult reading to the child, the child reading to the adult, taking turns whenever they choose. It’s to promote a love of reading in children, but it has been also helping with their comprehension and their reading confidence as well.” Book Buddies started as a very small pilot program in the spring of 2016 at a Harris County Public Library in Clear Lake. “It was a very successful pilot, and so we decided to try and bring it to more of our branches,” said Holly Takashima, youth literacy services specialist with HCPL. The following fall four new library branches were added. The most recent cycle of the Buddies that just concluded in April

had nine branches participating. The projection for this fall is 25 libraries with Little Buddy programs. “The program is adaptable to the different branches in different communities,” said Takashima. “Our aim is to help young kids become independent readers, enjoy reading, and then library users. We get to have the readings in the libraries, surrounded by books. It has helped them figure out who they are as a readers, how you choose a good book.” Success stories are numerous at Harris County Public Libraries where the program has been used. “Most of the kids who participated in the Little Buddies are behind in their reading,” said Jacque Mitchell at the Aldine Library. “This is a little push that they need. In my first session I had a child who had been held back a grade because he couldn’t read well. He showed amazing progress, was reading on his own at the end. His mom at the end was crying, thanking me because they couldn’t afford a tutor. Now he goes home and pursues reading on his own.” The fall 2017 Book Buddies cycle will run from September to November at 25 branch locations including Katy, 5414 Franz Rd, Katy, (281-391-3509) and Maud Marks, 1815 Westgreen Blvd, Katy (281-492-8592).

Application period for adult volunteers is closed for this upcoming fall cycle. However, if you are 18 years old or over and interested in being an adult Big Buddy for our cycle in spring 2018, please fill out the Interest Form and you will be contacted as soon as the application opens again. http://www. hcpl.net/form/book-buddies-interest-form Naomi Haught, assistant branch manager at Maud Marks Library, said the program is the same at any of the different locations. The only difference might be that they take place on a different day. “At our location, the Little Buddies will meet on Mondays, beginning Sept. 11. It’s a 10-week program, ending Nov. 13. We have somewhere between 10-15 Buddies, very excited about getting this started. We have about a dozen children signed up, but still taking applications.” Books are chosen by the volunteer and Buddy. “We want the children to enjoy reading; we want the children to pick out what they want to read,” said Haught. “The Little Buddies are what we’re looking for now,” said Misty Wraght. ”We still have slots open. I can still take applications. If we get too many applications then we use a lottery for the available spaces.”
