It’s June and we are excited to say that this is looking like the best month we have had in some time! All of our bingo halls are up and running, and yes - that includes the reopening of Rosenberg Day Bingo. We are humbled by the outpouring of love and support you have given us during this time. It is our privilege to be able to serve the needs of our community, both by providing the charities with much needed funding, and by providing our players with a safe space to enjoy bingo.
In order to keep the fun going and keep our bingo halls a safe and welcoming environment for all of our players, we have had to introduce new COVID-19 health rules. Please take a moment to review them, we will recap them next to this article. We know that these new rules are somewhat of a hassle. The masks may itch or make your glasses fog up. The temperature checks are inconvenient. It’s hard to sit far from your friends and you miss being able to hang out like you used to. We understand all of that. Despite all of the inconveniences they may cause, the rules are incredibly important because they keep everybody safe. The health and safety of our employees, players and vendors is our #1 priority. We thank you for your understanding and continued cooperation. With love and care, Augie GBF Public Health Rules (COVID-19 Precautions)
Golden Bingo Family has always placed the health and safety of our customers, employees and vendors as our number one priority. With that in mind, we are now introducing a set of new rules that will help keep everyone safe and healthy. Our COVID-19 precautions supplement our standard house rules. Please read these rules as we prepare to find a new normal. 1. Temperature will be taken for everyone entering the bingo hall. One must have a temperature of 99.0 degrees F or below to continue into the bingo hall. 2. Cloth face coverings (over the nose and mouth) are required for all customers, employees and vendors. Only the caller may remove their mask during the bingo session. 3. Social distancing will be enforced. Please maintain at least 6ft separation from anyone who is not a member of your household. Look at the floor for pre-marked spots. 4. Only members of the same household may sit together at a table. No more than 4 people per table. Every other table must be left empty. 5. Customers and employees must wash and sanitize their hands upon entering the hall. 6. Please no groups while waiting in line. One person per household may stand in line to purchase bingo packages.
If you exhibit any of the following symptoms, please stay home: • • • • • •
cough shortness of breath or difficulty breathing chills or repeated shaking with chills muscle pain headache sore throat
• • • •
loss of taste or smell diarrhea feeling feverish known close contact with a person who is lab confirmed to have COVID-19
We reserve the right to ask anyone to leave. In order to combat the spread of COVID-19, we must rely on one another to keep each other safe. We appreciate everyone’s compliance and patience. Thank you for sharing bingo fun with us and supporting our amazing charities! JUNE 2020 \\ THE BINGO NUGGET

NEVADA TARGETS JUNE DATE TO REOPEN CASINOS ... But not every resort amenity will be open. Nightclubs, dayclubs, buffets and large venues will remain closed. Cirque du Soleil shows will stay dark, at least for now. Signs everywhere will remind guests of new rules: Wash your hands; keep distance from others; limit your elevator ride to your sanitized room to just four people. This one is for the dudes – the men in our lives. June is all about the men that we love and
care about; it’s also Men Health Month. Celebrate what makes you amazingly you. Since 1994, sponsored by a congressional health education program, Men’s Health Month is celebrated across the United States with health fairs, screenings, and other health education/outreach activities.
Why Men’s Health Month? Despite the amazing medical advances, men still have a 7-year average shorter lifespan than women do. Prostate cancer has grown to an alarming rate of 1 in 9 (in 2015), with many men reluctant to visit their health care provider for regular exams. They may have related problems for many reasons, including, but not limited to: fear, lack of information, and cost factors. 12

So what do we do? Well, if you’re a female
reading this – encourage the men in your life (family and friends) to schedule and actually go to their check up. If you’re a male: put this magazine down. Pick up your phone. Dial your physician’s phone number. Schedule the check up; physically put your appointment in whatever scheduling device you use. Actually go to your appointment. This will be different from other age appropriate exams. If you’re between the ages of 20-39 you can schedule your exam every 3 years, 40-49 every 2 years, and over 50 head to the doctor every year. But every year you should get your blood pressure checked. Hypertension is a serious issue amongst men

What else should you get every year? Well, a rectal exam, PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test, and hemoccult screening (screens the stool for microscopic amounts of blood that can be the first signs of polyps or colon cancer). Prostate Cancer is this drastic – it’s the second leading cause of cancer death for males only behind lung cancer. We are also seeing a rise in melanoma (skin cancer) diagnosis, killing twice as many men as women. JUNE 2020 \\ THE BINGO NUGGET

MODERN MOM
Summer is finally here and that means lots of time spent around pools and other bodies of water. I mean we do live in South Texas y’all... it’s a million degrees! As excited as I am to jump in the pool I am just as nervous about my children being by the water. I know we have covered this topic before but I feel like it is important enough to touch base again. Even if you have read these tips before it could not hurt to refresh your memory. It could save your childs life.
The Hard Facts
Among preventable injuries, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 – 4 years old. Children 1 – 4 years old are more likely to drown in a pool. Children 5 years and older are more likely to drown in natural water, such as ponds, lakes and rivers. 18
THE BINGO NUGGET // JUNE 2020
Top Tips • Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. • Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swim with a partner every time. • Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development and how often they are around water. • Teach children that swimming in open water is not the same as swimming in a pool. They need to be aware of uneven surfaces, river currents, ocean undertow and changing weather.
Make sure kids learn how to swim and develop these five water survival skills: 1. Step or jump into water over their
heads and return to the surface 2. Float or tread water for one minute 3. Turn around in a full circle and find an exit 4. Swim 25 yards to exit the water 5. Exit the water. If in a pool, be able to
exit without using the ladder
Know what to do in an emergency. Learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a child’s life.
ULTIMATE BLT
Let’s be honest, there’s no one right way to make a sandwich. A lot of it simply depends on personal preferences. So, take this as a recommendation and feel free to modify it! Or, try it as it is written and see if you agree that it is absolutely fantastic
INGREDIENTS • ¼ cup (packed) dark brown sugar • 4 teaspoons chipotle chile powder • 4 teaspoons smoked paprika • 1½ teaspoons kosher salt, divided • ¼ cup pure maple syrup • 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper • 2 pounds thick-cut bacon
• 2 heads of red romaine lettuce, separated into individual leaves • 4 large beefsteak tomatoes, sliced ¼-inch thick • 16 ½-inch slices white bread, toasted, such as pan de mie • Mayonnaise, Sriracha Mayonnaise, and/or Lemon-Herb Mayonnaise (for serving) • Flaky sea salt, freshly ground pepper
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven; preheat to 400°. 2. If making brown-sugar rub, whisk brown sugar, chile powder, paprika, and 1 tsp. kosher salt in a small bowl. 3. If making maple-mustard glaze, whisk maple syrup, mustard, cayenne, and remaining ½ tsp. kosher salt in another small bowl. 4. For plain bacon, divide between 2 wire racks set inside large foil-lined rimmed baking sheets. Bake, rotating baking sheets front to back and top to bottom halfway through, until brown and crisp, 35–50 minutes (depending on the thickness of the bacon). Transfer to paper towels to drain. 5. For flavored bacon, generously sprinkle desired amount (you’ll have enough rub and glaze for 1 lb. bacon each) with rub or brush with glaze about 5 minutes before it is done cooking. Rub should be melted and bubbling and glaze should look thick and caramelized. 6. Arrange bacon on a large platter and serve with lettuce, tomatoes, toast, mayonnaise, Sriracha Mayonnaise, Lemon-Herb Mayonnaise, sea salt, and pepper alongside for building sandwiches. 20

Things just aren’t going your way this month. Maybe you decided to make a life altering change like leaving a partner or a job. You’re being asked to do some things that are making you a bit uncomfortable. Lean into this discomfort, breathe through the pain and realize that you’re going to have to change things up.
While you’re not known for your passion, it’s about to bust out. You’re ready to get completely focused on your relationships and be the best listener you’ve ever been. You’re also ready for a big change in your life. You may not know what that is yet, jot down your wildest dreams and they very well could happen.
Courageous Leo, you are putting all of the work that you’ve studied up on to the test this month. This month you’re truly into bettering yourself and you’re ready to explore more. Remember to go for the best relationship that you can have, with yourself. Set a goal to be drama-free this month!
Are you feeling like you don’t know who you see in the mirror? It’s ok, you are going through a lot and you’ve been under a giant shift in your life. You may feel confused at times then like you know exactly what you want. Lean into this discomfort. Ask yourself before you make big decisions, “What do I really want?”

But keep in mind that it’s also smart to make a pro’s and con’s list as you’re going through this process. It’s time to make those big decisions.
Nothing just seems to be going right this month and no matter how much you’re trying to keep going with normal life you have distractions all over the place. It’s also a very emotional time so make sure that you take the time to really evaluate your moves. Take this time to just relax and put yourself first.
The summer is here and you’re ready for the change. Be willing to let go of what has been controlling you over the last few months. Remember that there is a tough road ahead and you should be proud of whatever the outcome is. Your word of the month will be surrendered. Let yourself live a little.
Last month you took the time to look over your commitments, routines, and obligations. While you were taking the time to go through what is needed and what can be cut out, now is the time to act on all of this. These are not quick and easy decisions to make so be sure to go with care through these actions.

Do you feel like everything is just coming down on you right now? It’s ok - it’s just the stars. The good news is this is all starting to come to an end and the path is beginning to clear up a bit. Make sure that you make time to get through those tasks that you were putting off during quarantine.
Uh oh Pisces, you do seem to have a lot on your plate this month! While what you’re trying to juggle is admirable, make sure to take a pause. Your physiologic stability should not suffer because of your career goals.
Fair warning Aries, and friends/ family of Aries, June is a bumpy month for you and nearly everything that people do and say will get on your last nerves. You’re incredibly sensitive during this time, just keep in mind that the only person that matters is you. Don’t pay attention to other people’s opinions.
You are ready to get out and about this month, dear Taurus! And the best kind of vacation occurs with a travel partner. Take someone you care for along with you on this adventure, make new memories with this person, you’ll get reconnected. June is a time for you to relax and get recharged.

Newsflash: we are not protecting our skin enough In case you’ve been spending the daytime hours indoors (say at a bingo hall, which we’re not complaining about) you may have noticed that the dog days of summer are upon us and we don’t even start the season until later this month. Welcome to summer in Texas where the days get longer, the ice cream/palatero man doesn’t come around nearly enough as they should, and the sun’s rays just beat a bit more on our fragile skin. Last month was skin cancer awareness month so what better way to kick it off than discussing sunscreen. Believe it or not, you, me, your cousin – we’re just not wearing nearly enough of it nor are we applying it correctly to our skin. Fact: the skin is the largest organ of our body. Fact: many of us are not using skin protection when we walk out the door. Fact: those of us that do put on sunscreen are not putting enough on. In 2017, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology issued a report where researchers placed free sunscreen dispensers on the grounds of the Minnesota State Fair and observed that for 93 hours, only 2,187 people used sunscreen – of this one-third applied it to all of their exposed skin and 38% had on sun-protective clothing, hats, or sunglasses. Of those to use sunscreen – more females to males and not surprisingly people barely used it on cloudy days. Here’s the next fact, even on cloudy days, “up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can reach your skin” according to Ingrid Polcari, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist and one of the authors of the study. 30
THE BINGO NUGGET // JUNE 2020
So here’s what you can do: • Wear protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts (think thin) and pants. Yes, it gets hot. Wear a light protector though. • Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, not just face and arms. How much exactly? About a palm sized amount (depending on your body size). • The higher the SPF the closer to safety. No one sunscreen can full protect but you can get really close. SPF 30 blocks 97% of the sun’s harmful rays. • Keywords: broad spectrum this will protect against UVA (premature skin aging) & UVB (sunburn) – both can lead to skin cancer. Healthy and youthful, that’s a win. • Another key term: water resistant this is not the same as waterproof, there are no sunscreens that are 100% waterproof. But, with water resistant you don’t have to worry about when you get sweaty or wet for 40-80 minutes • Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.

Wow! Best barbecue I’ve had in a really long time!! We ended up ordering take out because it was super busy and it’s no wonder! The ribs were cooked perfectly and fell off the bone so nicely. I’ve never had ribs that were distinctly full of flavor!! The potato salad was good, cole slaw was great ... I’ve had a hard time finding a good cole slaw that I could finish with my meal, and this one hit the spot! Sadiya A. 5.0 star rating 5/17/2020 Yelp Review

We ordered delivery and the food arrived hot within 20 minutes. We got the nachos with brisket, a pound of their ribs with the strawberry habanero glaze, coleslaw, and the twice baked potato casserole. The ribs are hands down the BEST I’ve ever had and the nachos were AMAZING. Between my boyfriend and I we couldn’t even finish everything so you definitely get a lot for your money. Best. Brisket. Ever. Everything about Hoegemeyer’s will definitely bring us back the next time we’re in town. All the sides were good- the fact you can return for seconds is even better. You can select from marbled or lean brisket cut. The marbled is like salted candy. It melts in your mouth. Homemade peach cobbler was a great way to finish the meal. I’ll definitely be back. Every time I find myself in the vicinity of this place, I am sure to stop and get some BBQ. I’ve brought people from all over the country to it and it’s always the same feedback AMAZING! Only problem is that I am miserable from overeating every time I leave.... Lol Love this place! BBQ done to perfection!

Smokin’ Moon BBQ
1617 W Polk Ave. Pharr, TX 78577 (956) 884-7709 This place is a perfect evening hangout and has excellent food. The brisket is so tender it falls apart when picking up. The flavor is carried throughout. The stuffed peppers are a great starter. The staff takes pride in all they do. When choosing a BBQ pace in Texas you can’t go wrong. This one is just so right.
