Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS is one of three military installations comprising Joint Base San Antonio as part of the 502nd Air Base Wing.

The “Showplace of the Air Force”, as known across the U.S.A. was dedicated as a training base for pilots on June 2, 1930 – and continues that mission today.

Located at FM 78 and Loop 1604, Randolph AFB occupies the far northeastern section of the Corridor in Universal City. The more than 10,000 military and civilian employees make their homes in the surrounding communities collectively known as

MISSION:

the Randolph Metrocom. The base employs over 5700 military personnel and 6500 civilians. Randolph is headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Air Education and Training Command, the 19th Air Force, the 12th Flying Wing, the Air Force Personnel Center, the Air Force Recruiting Service Headquarters and the Air Force Center for Quality and Management Innovation. A number of buildings located on the base including the Taj Mahal are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its economic impact region covers a 50-mile commuting radius, and has a yearly payroll of more than $350 million. Randolph is believed to have created more than 7,500 jobs for local communities.

The Orderly Room is the checkin point for all officers and enlisted soldiers upon arrival to Joint Base Randolph. You will report to the Personnel Center located at 555 F Street in Building 693. If you have more specific questions, please call 210-652-5321 or DSN 210-487-5321.

The ACU duty uniform is worn during in-processing at Randolph AFB. You will need enough uniforms for the six days you will be with the detachment. Do not forget to bring your personnel records including medical, dental and financial when checking in. A billeting assignment, bedding and a temporary meal card for those not on rations will be assigned once you have checked in.

CHECK-IN/REPORTING PROCEDURES Once you arrive at Joint Base Randolph, report to your orderly room with your sealed records. Upon signing in with your unit, you will be scheduled for required in processing appointments. If you or a family member needs an ID card or CAC card that will be handled through the MPF. Military members can and are encouraged to make appointments for ID cards. If you arrive after 4:30 p.m. or on a weekend or holiday, please go to Randolph’s 24-hour arrival point, the Randolph Lodging office, located in Building 112. Please report to your orderly room the next duty day. It is our goal to make your in processing go as smoothly as possible.

MARRIAGE ENROUTE If you get married immediately before you PCS, you must inform your commander and follow the procedures exactly as you are given them. continued on page 8

NEWCOMERS AND RELOCATION GUIDE The military will not pay for travel and housing of your new spouse if you do not follow the proper procedures.

TRAVEL PLANNING Lodging for new arrivals is very limited. You can make reservations as soon as you receive PCS orders; however, accommodations may not always be available. Be prepared to defray the cost of temporary lodging in the local area. Your sponsor can provide you with additional information on lodging and answer other specific questions.

REGISTERING VEHICLES ON BASE In order to register a vehicle on base, you must provide insurance documents, driver’s license, government ID, and vehicle State Registration or title. Registration is done at the Visitor Center.

SPONSORSHIP Settling into your new location and your new unit takes time. These two

website resources, militaryinstallations. com and militaryhomefront.dod.mil. com are designed to assist you with information about your new location.

Complementing these two websites is the sponsorship program, which is very helpful in providing new unit information.

You may request a sponsor from your gaining unit as soon as you receive your orders.

A sponsor is someone from your new unit who is assigned to assist you settling into your new location. Your sponsor is responsible for mailing you a welcome package which contains information to give you a “headsup” on the base and local area.

Communication with your sponsor is essential and can make your move much smoother.

You can learn more about the sponsorship program and how to apply through your Relocation Assistance Program or the Family Center at your new installation.

TEMPORARY LODGING FACILITY The Randolph Lodge has 30 family units and 530 single units. One of the

family units is handicap accessible. All rooms are similar and feature a queen sized bed, dining table, TV, VCRs, radio/clock, refrigerator, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, microwave and coffee pot. There is an on-site laundry facility. Cribs, highchairs and roll away beds are available on request at no additional charge.

All units are non-smoking. Please call for rates. Reservations may be

made as soon as you receive orders.

• Workshops and Briefings – The classes offered vary but you can generally find classes on buying, selling and renting smart, budgeting and finance, moving with children, general moving preparation and other moving related topics.

• Pre-departure Briefings – Sometimes called Smooth Move or PCS Briefings these briefings provide essential information that can prevent you from making uninformed and costly decisions before your move.

• Settling-in Services – These may include welcome wagon services, local area tours with childcare often provided, or basic household items to use until your goods arrive.

Overseas arrival services may include introductory language classes and cultural awareness training.

• Deployment Support – The Family Center assists unit family readiness groups and Ombudsman programs during the entire deployment cycle. Support includes services for special needs, classes on deployment preparation, managing finances, helping children adjust, family separation, return and reunion, and information on resources available locally and on-line.

• Foreign Spouse Support – Whether your question concerns immigration and naturalization, learning the English language or how to take local transportation, the Relocation Program provides assistance, classes and referrals.

• Emergency Assistance – From time-to-time emergencies occur while moving. The Relocation Program office has the information and resources to provide emergency financial assistance and referrals.

• Transition Assistance – This is a mandatory program available to assist personnel and family members when they separate from the military. The Relocation Assistance office will establish your individual transition plan and refer you to all the installation and community resources necessary to complete a successful transition.

Selma is one of the many settlements along the Cibolo Creek founded by German Pioneers.

In 1849, the Harrison & Brown Stagecoach Stop was created to transport passengers and freight between Central, South and East Texas.

Opening its first post office in 1856, the population grew rapidly with an influx of German and Polish immigrants. In 1940, Selma was home to 100 residents; by 2000, the population reached 700 residents.

The 2010 Census revealed that Selma was ranked one of the San Antonio area’s fastest growing communities with a growth rate of 603%. Today, the estimated population is fast approaching 10,000 and still growing every day.

Selma is situated within the fastest growing corridor in the nation, connecting San Antonio and Austin.

Just minutes from Joint Base San Antonio at Randolph, Selma is home to many active military families, retirees and veterans. The city provides abundant shopping and beautiful planned neighborhoods, while also providing quick access to all that San Antonio and its neighboring cities have to offer. In 2007, a grant from the TXDOT helped renovate the city’s historic Stage Stop and construct a Visitor’s Center. Selma recently completed the restoration of the John S. Harrison House and Park. The JBSA-Randolph Air Heritage Park was dedicated in March 1985 and completed in October 1988. The park includes seven trainer aircraft that are significant to the history of pilot training at Randolph Air Force Base, a dedicatory plaque and a granite bench dedicated to the members of Pilot Class 42-E. The air park is located across from the 12th Services Squadron on C Street East, just east of the Taj Mahal.

The inscription on the plaque states the purpose of the park: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Since its beginning in 1930, the mission of Randolph Air Force Base has been flight training. These are some of the aircraft that have flown in the fulfillment of that mission. From this airfield, more than 125,000 flyers have mastered the art of flight and have gone on to create the heritage of airpower and the legacy of the Air Force. This park is dedicated to the men and women who made the accomplishment of that mission possible.â&#x20AC;? The plaque was dedicated by General Andrew P. Iosue, Air Training Command commander, in March 1985.

The Pilot Class 43-E Bench was dedicated May 24, 1993.

The words on the bench state: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In memory of those who have gone before, from those who will follow. Pilot Class 43-E (Army Air Force Gulf Coast Command) graduated May 24, 1943.

The training aircraft on display in the park are described briefly by a memorial plaque in front of each aircraft.

The “Taj Mahal,” or Building 100, at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, is one of the Air Force’s most widely known buildings. It presently houses the 902d Mission Support Group and 12th Flying Training Wing headquarters.

The 902d MSG is the host unit for Randolph AFB, and reports to the 502d Air Base Wing at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

The 12th Flying Training Wing is a multi-mission unit that conducts instructor pilot training, combat systems, officer training, introduction to fighter fundamentals, and screens potential Air Force pilots for entry into undergraduate pilot training.

The majestic building rises 170 feet above Washington Circle. The origins of the name are unknown, but the distinctive appearance of the building reminded someone of the original Taj Mahal, a mausoleum built in the 17th century by a wealthy Indian ruler in memory of his wife, and considered one of the seven wonders of the world.

The nickname stuck.

In a stroke of ingenuity, 1st Lieutenant Harold L. Clark, the architect of the air city that was Randolph Field, came up with the idea of a decorative domed structure that was usually so obtrusive at most airfields. In doing so, he devised a scheme to centralize a considerable number of functions in a single, large post administration building at the base of the tower. The building was completed and officially opened Oct. 5, 1931.

The job of translating Lieutenant Clark’s ideas and sketches for the Taj into blueprints fell to a San Antonio architectural firm headed by the fatherson team of Atlee and Robert Ayers.

The firm of Ayers and Ayers was well-known and highly respected in architectural circles, having designed such San Antonio landmarks as the Municipal Auditorium, McNay Art Institute, Tower-Life Building, and St. Anthony Hotel. The results of their labor is a two story building done in

Spanish Colonial Revival style capped by a blue and gold mosaic dome roof covered with ceramic tiles. The building was completed in 1931 at a cost of $252,000.

In accordance with Lieutenant Clark’s plans, the Taj came to house not only a 500,000 - gallon water tank, but the signal office, a photographic unit, the post office, telephone exchange, print plant, weather office, judge advocate’s office and courtroom and administrative offices of the quartermaster, as well as the personnel, finance, recruiting and public relations offices. In addition, the rear wing contained a movie theater and auditorium that had a seating capacity of 1,150 people. On the second floor, were the offices of the Randolph Field and the Air Corps Training Center commanders.

The space beneath the dome, which initially housed the weather office, later served as an artist’s studio. The artist, a man named Dean Faucett, had been contracted to do murals and paintings for Randolph under a Guggenheim Foundation grant. Faucett’s first works, a set of murals six feet high and 106 feet long, depicted the life of early aviation cadets and were displayed at the cadet mess (now Building 905) in 1944. Faucett also painted the four life-sized portraits of a pilot, navigator, bombardier and gunner, that still grace the rotunda today.

On May 28, 1974, the Air Force and the Order of the Daedalians formally dedicated the rotunda to the memory of Clark, who retired as a brigadier general in 1946 and died in San Antonio in 1973. Today, the rotunda and the east and west corridors contain historic Army Air Corps and Air Force photos, memorabilia and a Hall of Valor dedicated to Medal of Honor winners.

The Taj Mahal was dedicated as a Texas Historical Site landmark on March 2, 1976. It was officially listed in the National Registry of Historic Places on Aug. 27, 1987.
