Joint Base San Antonio-Ft. Sam Houston Fort Sam Houston originates in 1845 when the Post at San Antonio was established in the Alamo City. The Army established a garrison and regional headquarters in rented buildings and a Quartermaster supply depot in the Alamo. After the Civil War, the Army began to move out of the city onto land donated by the City of San Antonio. In 1876, the construction of the Quadrangle began and the Quartermaster Depot moved into it in 1877. The garrison moved into tents west of the Quadrangle in 1879 and the Headquarters moved in 1881. The Post at San Antonio continued to expand with the addition of the Infantry Post in the 1880s. It was designated as Fort Sam Houston in 1890 and expanded again in 1905 with the Cavalry and Light Artillery Post. These areas, plus the New Post of the 1930s, constitute the largest collection of historic buildings in the Department of Defense (800+) and form the Fort Sam Houston National Historic Landmark. Located in the heart of San Antonio, the post is the birthplace of military aviation and saw the development of the concept of airborne operations. The post evolved into the “Home of Army Medicine” after World War II and into the “Home of Military Medicine” with the establishment of the Medical Education and Training Campus in 2010. Many of America’s finest military personnel have served at Fort Sam Houston. The post is proud of its historic role and the many initiatives to retain the historic character of the post while serving as a modern, model Joint Base for the future.

HISTORICAL BUILDINGS OF JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON Construction at Fort Sam Houston began in the middle 1870s under the supervision of the military commander of the Department of Texas, Maj. Gen. Edward Ord, a West Point-trained Army engineer. Today, as one of the Army’s oldest installations, and with more than 900 buildings in its historic districts, Fort Sam Houston boasts one of the largest collections of historic military post structures. The significant contributions of Fort Sam Houston to the United States were recognized in 1975 when the post was designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Fort Sam Houston Quadrangle, built by George Henry Griebel, is the oldest structure at Fort Sam Houston. It was originally a supply depot, and during that time, it also housed Geronimo and those Apaches captured with him while the federal government decided whether they were prisoners of war or common criminals. Legend has it that the deer in the Quadrangle were there because Geronimo refused to eat food he did not hunt. In truth, the deer

pre-date Geronimo in the Quadrangle, and it is unlikely that the Army was concerned with his comfort. It is unknown why the deer (and peacocks/ peahens) were introduced within the confined courtyard of the Quadrangle. The Quadrangle is now an office complex housing the commanding general and staff of U.S. Army North. Even more consequential than the number of buildings is the historical integrity of the post’s different sections, which represent different eras of construction and reflect Army concepts in planning and design. Careful preservation of these areas allows the post to live with its history, surrounded by the traditions established when the first soldier arrived here in 1845. Fort Sam Houston Theater

BAMC has a history which dates back to 1879 when the first Post Hospital opened as a small medical dispensary located in a singlestory wooden building. During the early years the Post Hospital was in temporary structures, and it was not until 1886 that the first permanent hospital was built. In 1908 an 84-bed Station Hospital was constructed on the west side of the post. In 1929, Brig. Gen. Roger Brooke assumed command of the Station Hospital. Brooke is credited with instituting the first routine chest X-ray in military medicine. In July 1936, the cornerstone was laid for the construction of a replacement Station Hospital. By November 1938, the new 418-bed hospital was operational, having cost three million dollars. In 1941, BAMC prepared for an overwhelming flow of casualties from World War II battlefields by converting a 220-person enlisted barracks into additional patient wards. This facility provided care to wounded soldiers and would later become BAMC Headquarters. In 1942, the Station Hospital was renamed Brooke General Hospital in Brooke’s honor. In 1944, BAMC

converted a Cavalry Battalion barracks into a convalescent unit to accommodate the flow of casualties from the war. This building later became Beach Pavilion which housed a substantial portion of BAMC assets to include patient wards and specialty clinics. In 1946, Fort Sam Houston was chosen as the new site for the U.S. Army Medical Field Service School. The decision to centralize the Army’s medical research and training at one location resulted in the re-naming of Brooke General Hospital to Brooke Army Medical Center. In September 1987, the official ground-breaking took place for the construction of a new hospital. On July 18, 1995, ownership of the replacement hospital was given to the BAMC commander by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. On March 14, 1996, the new facility was officially dedicated and on April 13, BAMC opened for business with the transfer of inpatients from the “old” BAMC to the “new” BAMC. On Dec. 8, 2008, a groundbreaking was held to recognize the commencement of 2005 Base

Realignment and Closure (BRAC) construction and renovation of BAMC to build the 760,000 square-foot consolidated tower, 1,800,000 square-foot parking garage, and 22,400 square-foot central Energy Plant and renovate the existing BAMC facility. On Sept. 15, 2011, the two largest military medical facilities in San Antonio underwent historic name changes, marking the start of a new era in San Antonio military medicine. The San Antonio inpatient mission was moved to BAMC and the name was changed to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). At the same time, Wilford Hall Medical Center was redesignated Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC). On Sept. 15, 2011, the San Antonio Military Health System began operations, providing oversight to BAMC and WHASC and will have rotating Air Force and Army general officers.

SAMMC

SAMMC is located on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas and is the largest inpatient medical facility in the Department of Defense. It plays a critical role in patient care, graduate medical education and research, as well as taking care of wounded service members. The hospital staff provides inpatient care in a 2.1 millionsquare-foot, 425-bed, and state-of-the-art medical treatment facility. As a certified Level 1 Trauma Center, SAMMC receives more than 5,700 emergency room visits each month. It is one of only 31 hospitals in the United States that holds both Level I Trauma certification and accreditation from the American Burn Association. In addition, 40 beds are dedicated to the Army Institute of Surgical Research, which operates the only Department of Defense Burn Center – the Army Burn Center. SAMMC is the hospital component at the center of the Brooke Army Medical Center command. The hospital has cared for thousands of service members who were injured in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, and nearly 1,500 medical professionals have been deployed in support of those missions. Since the Global War on Terrorism began in September 2001, the Burn Team has made frequent trips to Landstuhl Army Regional Medical Center in Germany, transporting patients back to SAMMC for care. 22
