A CHRISTMAS CLASSIC AND A SONG OF TRUE LOVE!

W

ell, thank you to the many that requested a re-post of the 12days of Christmas! Enjoy the season of Christmas right into the new year! Most are familiar with the Christmas song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” with its delightful, somewhat silly rhyme set of music. But it had quite a serious purpose when it was written. An underground catechism of sorts, when practicing the Christian faith in England was not allowed. Children learned about God and the teachings of their faith through this song.

ON THE FIRST DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE GAVE TO ME, A partridge in a pear tree (Jesus our true love; and as the partridge bird will REMEMBER THIS sacrifice its life to protect its young, Jesus did so for us) DECEMBER, THAT Continue with - On the __ day of Christmas….. for each day. YOU SHOULD KNOW Holidays have you stressed? Take a breath! A good deep breath. From your abdomen, not your chest. Chest breathing causes reduced oxygen delivery which increases feelings of anxiety. Deep breathing, on the other hand increases oxygen delivery throughout your body and activates your sympathetic nervous system’s relaxation response. It essentially quiets your mind and body while it increases your energy level. More energy and less stress - that’s what we want for Christmas!

Facebook Depression If you (or your children) ever feel depressed after viewing social media sites, remember this. Most people only post about positive experiences. You rarely see posts about sad or mundane times in a person’s life. Thus, what you see is only a small part of a much bigger story. So, stop comparing yourself to others on the screen. It’s not good; it’s not accurate; and it’s not worth it. You should feel good after perusing Facebook. If you don’t, then don’t do it.

Santa’s in town, ready or not You may really want that picture for the baby book, but if your kid is not ready, don’t force him to sit on Santa’s lap. Stranger anxiety is a thing and can affect kids as young as 8 months to up to six years. You can try to prepare an anxious child by having him create a wish list to share with the big guy or by watching from a distance beforehand to see how Santa interacts with the other kids. If your child gets excited about visiting with Santa, go for it, but if there is any sign of distress (especially tears), it’s better to wait another year.

Experiences over Things Can money buy happiness? Sure, but you’ll get more for your money if you purchase an experience over an item. Research shows that over time, satisfaction with material things goes down, whereas satisfaction with experiences (good or bad) goes up. Plus, shared experiences connect us more to other people than shared consumption (i.e. going on vacation together rather than

If someone you care about has lost a loved one this year, know that the holidays can be hard. The worst thing you can do though is ignore it in an effort to spare them pain. That can actually make them feel more alone. Instead, offer an ear if they want to talk, distractions if they want to be distracted, or simply a hug. You don’t have to know exactly what to say, just say something. “How are you holding up?” is a good place to start.

QUESTIONS

{ + PROFESSIONAL ANSWERS }

PATRICIA, MOM OF 1 Q. Getting ready for the holidays is always so special to me because I look forward to some of the traditions my family has had for many, many years. My daughter, 11 years, is not so keen on this and does not really get the significance of it all. How can I explain this better for her to want to have traditions?

CYNTHIA, MOM OF 2-YEAR OLD Q. I have a 2 year old and I’m interested in a Montessori School. Is this too early to start school, maybe half-days?

A. Traditions can range from important to fun.

a sense of accomplishment. The Montessori-in-

Getting married in a Church may be a tradition for some, and baking an old family recipe can be another. Having traditions gives you something to look forward to, like a family reunion every 5 years, or making tamales from scratch every Christmas with all the ladies in the family. Maybe you can try to come up with a new tradition with your daughter. Something that is important to her. Maybe mani-pedi’s together as a celebration of a good report card! That could be a good start.

ASK THE EDITOR... MARY ELLEN

A. It’s best to know what a Montessori school can do for your child. The primary goal is the philosophy of “Help me to do it myself”. Encouraging children to learn by doing will give them spired activities promote self-sufficiency and appeal to the senses. Many activities are a step towards preparing the finger muscles for holding a pencil for writing. Our 2-year olds can be much more capable than we realize. So to answer your question, bringing your 2-year old into a nurturing school setting would give her/him a great advantage to learning. KIM WILSON, Director Camden Hill Montessori

PATRICK, CONCERNED DAD Q. My daughter has IBS symptoms occasionally and said that peppermint may help relieve discomfort. What does a professional think about this.

A. Peppermint oil has been shown to relax gastrointestinal smooth muscle, which can help with IBS symptoms. Your daughter may want to consider peppermint oil capsules over peppermint candy. She should also include dietary modifications such as a high fiber diet for control of IBS symptoms. As always see your doctor if symptoms worsen and you begin to have increased pain or swelling in the abdomen as these can be signs of more serious problems. Note: People with upper GI problems or GERD should not use peppermint for relief. Try ginger for relief of those symptoms. DR. FARBOD MASROUR, Gastroenterologist Dallas Medical Center

Q. I am a freshman in college and my mom has been a fan of your magazine for years. She suggested I write to ask you about how to start meaningful conversations with my relatives over the holidays. I want to be able to really get to know them on a more mature level. Can you give me suggestions? — ANNA CLAIRE, STUDENT IN COLLEGE

A. A great conversation is always remembered! I would suggest starting with questions that you can learn from and are fun for them to answer, and could start some great dialogue on their life as a young adult. Try: “When you were in college what kinds of jobs did you have?” “Is there anything you wish you had done differently in your college years?” “Is there something you did in your college that you would recommend?” “Based on what you know now, would you have chosen a different major?” Respond with interest -“Tell me more about that.” Asking Why and How lets them know you are truly interested. Make sure to really listen! EMAIL QUESTIONS: editor@suburbanparent.com 8

PERFECT

Find the High Quality Preschool eeking an early education program for your child? Invest some time in your search and know what questions to ask to ensure a positive preschool experience for your child. The first five years of life are the absolute most essential for a child’s development, and trying to choose (a program) by reading a handbook and then going and visiting for an hour and making that choice is not a good idea. It’s one of the most critical decisions that you are going to make for your child.

S

LONG-TERM BENEFITS Quality early education prepares children to transition successfully into elementary school, with studies indicating that children are less likely to repeat grades or require special education. Early education can also nurture skills like self-esteem and self-confidence, which are necessary

14

irving parent DECEMBER 2016

to succeed in the transition from preschool to kindergarten--more so than knowing letters and numbers. Other areas early childhood education support is teaching socialization skills, emotional maturity and improved sensory motor skills.

BEGINNING THE SEARCH While referrals from other parents are a good starting point, personal observations are vital. Seek a program that fits your child’s personality and disposition and decide what you would like her to experience during her time away from home. Make appointments to observe and interview licensed programs that interest you. Consider the following factors:

ENVIRONMENT Attractive decor is nice, but notice what activities the children engage in and if the environment feels safe,

Don’t forget to tell our advertisers you saw them in Irving Parent!

secure and healthy. Look for any common safety hazards and observe sanitary measures, diaper changing procedure, foul smells and cleanliness. Throughout the center, you should hear children talking and see them playing in different areas of the classroom. A quality preschool program understands that play is essential to a child’s life, to their experiences, to their positive growth and development. They not only accommodate play, they encourage it, and they plan for it. Young children don’t learn best through the teacher talking to them while they sit quietly in large group. Young children learn through their senses, through exploring, through discovering, through their activities.

Skill for Life

EXPERIENCED TEACHERS Seek experienced, warm-natured teachers trained in early childhood development. Credentialed early education teachers understand how to nurture a child’s social emotional skills. Watch for positive, encouraging interaction between teachers and students. Additionally, observe classroom size and number of students per room.

LEARNING

SAFETY

FUN

GROUP SIZE Licensed childcare centers must meet the state’s staffto-child ratio requirements. State requirements aside, you know your child best. Beware of programs where you have trouble finding the adult in a roomful of children. Even a highly trained teacher will struggle with providing the daily one-on-one attention and interaction that a young child needs in a crowded classroom.

COMMUNICATION Consider how the school provides information to you about your child’s day-to-day activities and her progress. While some schools will provide a hand-out of the day’s activities, others take a more high-tech approach. For example, ask if they use a secured platform to communicate with parents. Where parents can log-in through the web or their smartphone to find out what activities are planned for the day, the lunch menu, as well as personalized daily reports and photos and videos of their child.

TRUST YOUR GUT From high-tech to no-frills, quality early education programs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and amenities. While compiling your wish list, decide which items you aren’t willing to compromise on and don’t feel rushed into a decision you aren’t completely comfortable with. By taking your time, asking questions and trusting your instincts about each program you observe, you are sure to find a high quality early education program that is just the right fit for your child. A MOM’S LETTER TO SANTA

| BY PAM MOLNAR

Dear Santa,

I can’t believe another year has gone by. Is it just me or are the years passing fast er? I think I have been a pretty good mom this year. I have driven my kids to every social event, prac tice and friend’s house. My wallet has been an endless foun tain of money for movies, frozen yogurt and senseless mall trips. I have clocked countless hours at socc er fields, basketball courts, softball diamonds and music auditoriums. With a little help from our frie nd, Google, I continue to help with homework in subjects I have long forgotten. Sure, I might have lost it a few times, but I live with teenagers, Santa. The y are God’s version of the Elf on the Shelf - sent dow n to keep us in check, but if left without supervision, they get into mischief.I know you are busy, so I will be brief. To start, I need a few things for the bath room – a sink that repels toothpaste, a spla sh free mirror and a never ending roll of toilet paper. Cha nging the roll is just too complicated for my family. I’d like a copy of “The Busy Mom’s Exercise -Free Wei ght Loss Plan”. I heard it is hard to find, but hey, you are Santa. As a backup, I would be happy with a copy of “The Wine Diet” instead. Unlike other programs, I think I could really stick to this one. Remember those electric bug zappers from years ago? If they make one for dog hair , I will take two! The dogs are older now so I can no longer claim the pile of hair is a litter of newborn puppies. If you have a time machine in storage at the North Pole, I would love the ability to send a letter to my younger self. I could save her hours of unnecessary worry about career choices, raising children and neighborhood drama. I think that is what caused these “blond” highlights I keep find ing in my hair. If it isn’t too much trouble, I would like to hav e a whole week free of arguments about who rides in the front seat, who drank the last Gatorad e and whose turn it is to do the dishes. This is the season of miracles, right? Lastly, I would be thrilled to serve a meal that no one complains about. I’ve given up asking for a meal that everyone eats together before 9:00pm. Our crazy schedule is something even Santa can’t fix. Well Santa, I can hear my daughter beep ing the car horn in the driveway. I have to start round two of my carpool. Trav el safe. I’m sorry if the cookies are gone when you get here. The dogs eat any thing left on the coffee table. Since I made them, it’s probably better that the dogs ate them anyway. Love, Mom P.S. All I really want is to see the magic of Christmas morning in my teenagers’ eyes . Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and

Christmas

Three phrases that sum up Christmas are: Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men, and Batteries not Included. — Author Unknown

by Norman Wesley Brooks, 1976 Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself. Peace on Earth, good will to men, kind thoughts and words of cheer, are things we should use often and not just once a year.

LOL WITH JAMES ESTES!

Remember too the Christ-child, grew up to be a man; to hide him in a cradle, is not our dear Lord’s plan. So keep the Christmas spirit, share it with others far and near, from week to week and month to month, throughout the entire year!

GOTTA LOVE ‘EM Thinking we were alone, I quietly asked my 7yr old son what he wanted to give to his twin sister for Christmas. He replied, “I don’t know.” I asked what he gave her last year and he whispered, “I can’t remember.” All of a sudden we heard a loud scream from upstairs saying, “I remember! He gave me measles!” — Mom of Ben and Becky

WHOLESOME ENDING russian tea cakes KEEPING TRADITIONS ALIVE

T

raditions are stories, beliefs, customs, and even recipes that are passed from one generation to the next. Teaching children about their family values will help to give them a feeling of pride and belonging to actually be a part of the traditions. Share traditions with your kids and create new traditions too!

For Christmas our Art Director, Renée, is sharing a family tradition.

INGREDIENTS - 1 cup soft butter - 1/2 cup powdered sugar - 1 tsp. vanilla - 2 1/4 cups flour - 1/4 tsp. salt - 3/4 cup chopped walnuts

INSTRUCTIONS 1 Mix lightly softened butter, sugar and vanilla

thoroughly in a bowl.

2 Mix flour and salt together in a seperate bowl

and sift into batter, then add in walnuts.

3 Chill dough until cool and heat oven to 400°. 4 Roll dough into 1” balls and place on ungreased

cookie sheet.

5 Bake 10-12 minutes, until set, but not brown. 6 While still warm, roll in powdered sugar and

let cool, then roll again.

“Making tons of goodies for Christmas with my mother was something we did every year when I was growing up; mainly because my Dad loved sweets around for Christmas! We would make peanut butter balls, fudge, chocolate covered peanut clusters, snowmen cookies and even cinnamon hard candy… and of course, the Russian Tea Cakes, which are still my Dad’s favorite. And as the years passed, my mother and I continued this tradition of making these treats with her grandson, my son, Kolton. His favorite was making the Snowmen cookies; and still today this tradition with my son, now grown, is still a must every year. Kolton can’t go without his snowman cookies! I’m looking forward to sharing this tradition with grandkids someday too!”

Makes 3 dozen 1” cookies.
