early One Score and zero years ago, my toddler said the words, “No mommy do!” Yep, independence starts with these three words. And at that time our lives forever change from doing to teaching.

An excerpt in the book, by Marianne Richmond, If I Could Keep You

Little, says If I could keep you little, I’d keep you close to me. But then I’d miss you growing into who you’re meant to be! As parents we have complex emotions as we cherish those fleeting moments of time from newborn, to baby, to child, to adolescent, to young adult and to adult. And what’s really important is to let our children naturally evolve to each stage of development at their own pace. Being mindful of how the world seems to want our children now, we have to keep them close, but at the same time let them learn to explore our world. There is an old Chinese proverb that says, “One generation plants the trees, and another gets the shade.” We parents may still be benefiting from the shade provided by trees planted by our parents,

“CHILDREN THRIVE WHEN PARENTS SET BEFORE THEM INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT, BUT ALWAYS MEETABLE CHALLENGES.”

by their moral standards and spiritual commitment. Now that the spade is in our hands we have to ask ourselves, “What kind of trees are we planting?” It’s important, as a parent, to live out our faith in our own life, and train our children in all that is included in “the way of the Lord.” Parents should know that they can assist their children to make godly decisions, even at a young age. If we fail to train our kids in Godly ways, keeping their lives holy, we will be letting the

YOU SHOULD KNOW HAPPIER IN NATURE

WASH BEFORE WEARING! Brand new baby skin is very sensitive, so it’s a good idea to wash all those cute new clothes waiting for her before she wears them. A lot of new clothes have a chemical finish sprayed on them to keep them “fresh” looking in the store. You don’t want those chemicals touching your kid. And hand me downs? Well, who knows how well or how long they’ve been stored. If you don’t use a detergent designed for babies, be sure to use a gentle, unscented one. And skip the dryer sheets too. Baby will thank you.

There’s a difference between playing outside and playing outside in nature. While organized outdoor sports are great, sometimes kids need unstructured playtime in nature. Research shows that children who enjoy nature play are happier, healthier, and have lower stress levels. They also develop creative problem-solving skills (as they learn to manipulate their surroundings), better social skills (as they learn to work with friends without adults telling them what to do) and self-regulation skills (as they learn how being in nature makes them feel). Relax, unstructured does not mean unsupervised. So go on, send ‘em outside. The backyard is an amazing place!

WRITING A BIRTH PLAN In order to have the birth experience you’ve always imagined, you may want to consider writing a birth plan, a simple one page statement of your preferences. Things to address might include who you’ll allow in the room, how you plan to manage the pain, what positions you’d like to try, who will catch the

baby eating habits When introducing a new food to your baby, don’t give up if he doesn’t seem to like it the first time. That funny face he makes when tasting a new food doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t like it. He’s probably just reacting to the new flavor. It can sometimes take up to ten times of trying a food for baby to decide if he actually likes it or not. So go ahead; give it another try… or 10.

of wholesome foods, there are a few things to focus on increasing while breastfeeding, for the health of moms and babies. The first is calories – breastfeeding moms need about 500 calories a day more than they did pre-pregnancy, but let hunger be your guide. Next is hydration – aim to drink a non-sweetened beverage like water (toss in fruit slices for flavor) each time you nurse your baby. Last, breastfeeding moms need plenty of protein and healthy omega-3 fats. A tasty way to get both is to eat 2-3 seafood meals each week. This could look like shrimp pasta, a tuna sandwich, and grilled salmon. The 2015 Dietary Guidelines say eating fish during breastfeeding helps boost babies’ brain development.

A. Good question, and yes, you need to take precautions. Zika is a virus that is dangerous for all women in their childbearing years. We don’t know a lot about it except that it seems to have caused many cases of microcephaly, a brain birth defect, in newborns. Protect yourself and your baby by avoiding mosquito bites. The mosquitos that carry the Zika virus bite mostly during the daytime. Symptoms include mild fever, rash, red eyes, muscle and joint pain, fatigue and headache. Symptoms last 2-7 days, and the incubation period is 3-7 days. Living in Texas, know that this area has the highest numbers of mosquitos. Use EPA-registered repellent and follow the directions on the bottle. Apply to clothing and to exposed skin.

acterized by the development of a flat spot on the back or side of the head. Many factors can cause flat spots. A baby’s skull is very soft and pressure from everyday surfaces, such as beds or car seats, can cause misshaping. Rest assured it’s not your fault. The good news is, plagiocephaly is also a highly treatable condition, especially when treated early on. Many of the techniques known to prevent or improve plagiocephaly can be practiced at home; which includes supervised tummy time and repositioning techniques, which are known to effectively prevent and improve abnormal head shapes.

Q. My child, age 6 years, uses ear buds when on his Tablet. How do I keep him safe from ear damage and what is the limit? A. Great question. It’s important to know that i-pads, i-pods, tablets and phones can reach up to 115 decibels, which is well over the safe listening zone of up to 85 decibels. Here are tips to prevent hearing loss which can occur with regular use of technology that exceeds the safe zones: You can control the level for safe usage by going into the device settings and lower the volume; you can also invest in volume limiting headsets which only allow the device to reach 85 decibels. Headsets are better than regular ear buds because they block out background noise and your child will be less likely to crank up the volume. For small children, even hand held toys can be too loud. Keep in mind that loud sounds have a cumulative effect. Limit the usage of high volume toys. Now more than ever, it’s important to make sure your child gets an annual check-up for ear health.

PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR

O

The New Sibling

ur family building began with one child. I discovered that preparation helped our children transition into their new roles as a “big brother” or “big sister” as our family grew. Here are a few tips from my “in the trenches” experiences and practices that helped our children embrace the newest family member with total joy.

BEGIN THE BIG BROTHER/BIG SISTER PREPARATION DURING YOUR PREGNANCY OR ADOPTION PROCESS You will have plenty of time once you have shared the news that you’re expecting. Use some of this time to help your child become comfortable with welcoming the new arrival. Siblings-to-be can sing, talk to, or tell stories to the baby in your belly. Talk about what a great older brother or sister your child will be, and what a help they can be to you. Your child can carry a photo around of the child if you are adopting. My son did this after we received a picture of his sister from China. We laminated a copy for him so that he would not destroy it. He proudly shared the picture with anyone he could, “This is my baby sister!” Siblings-to-be can help with nursery preparation-arranging small items like diapers, books, and stuffed animals. Older siblings can help with painting the room. Our son helped us pick out books for his sister, as well as toys and clothes. My daughter helped me put her sister’s crib together by handing me the small assembly items. She then ran and got a stuffed animal from her cache to gift to her baby sister.

ACKNOWLEDGE THAT EVERYTHING SHIFTS WHEN A NEW CHILD ARRIVES An only or youngest becomes a big sister or brother. The youngest child relinquishes the spot of being the baby, to become the middle child. As parents we should recognize and talk about these changes with our children and focus

14

irving parent

BY J U DY M . M I L L E R

on the fact that even though our family is growing it is still our family, just bigger. Our oldest was an “only” for five years before his sister arrived home. We spent a lot of time preparing him to be a big brother. We discussed responsibilities and expectations as well as the privileges that come with being the oldest. We read books and watched movies about families with multiple kids; then we talked about the relationships we read about or viewed in the movies. The transition to becoming a big brother went beautifully because he was so invested. Now a teenager and an adult they continue to be close.

BE CONSISTENT Adhere to your schedule. Children do well with consistency; they need to know what they can rely on, what to expect. Consistency gives a child security, especially when there has been a big change, as in the addition of a new sibling. It is common for children to act out or regress when a new sibling arrives into the family. My youngest daughter wanted a bottle after her brother arrived home. Recently potty-trained she had a few accidents. Discipline and reactions to your children should be consistent with how you handled things prior to the arrival of your new child. Praise the behavior you want to see.

ADDRESS THE EXPECTATIONS AND FEARS THAT COME WITH CHANGE There will be less of your energy, patience and time-to go around, especially during the first days, weeks, or months home. You will likely run into additional challenges because you are juggling more kids Assure your child that your relationship and love for them will not change. Try to schedule one-on-one time to listen and share with your child. Have dad, another family member, or trusted friend watch the new sibling. Your child will feel loved, and this is the greatest gift you can give. SP

n 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued their Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) report, which revealed that the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 68 births in the U.S. — nearly twice the rate it was in 2004. While alarming, the national spotlight on autism has allowed us all to take a closer look at the disability and identify ways to help those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) function at their highest level. These days, technology is helping to shape how kids and adults with autism learn, adapt, and communicate. To help you, we decided to highlight some of our favorite apps that might resonate with your child or someone else you know with ASD.

5 APPS

M S I T AU

LET’S FACE IT! (LFI!) SCRAPBOOK: Designed as a tool for learning faces and recognizing emotions, LFI! Utilizes the iPad’s built-in camera to take photos and make videos of the user’s friends, family, classmates, and other important people in their lives. Pictures and videos can be labeled and organized into personalized albums that are then used as material for the app’s four games. THE MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK: A long list of skills are worked on with this app, include fine motor, imagination, language, and vocabulary, but what else would you expect from Sesame Street? Parents are given tips on helping children work through their fears, and this storybook app is a top-notch choice for teaching cause and effect, since kids learn that a touch of their fingers allows them to interact with the story. FRUIT NINJA FREE: As users chop apples, oranges, and strawberries in this fruit-slicing game, they may not realize they’re developing their fine motor skills at the same time.

PROLOQUO2GO: The hefty price tag on this app ($249.99) has been well worth it according to the many users who have sung its praises. Made for children who have a hard time speaking and building vocabulary, this app uses natural voices to dictate words and offers more than 14,000 symbols to build language. In fact, many kids with autism use it as their main mode of communication since it gives them a voice through the iPad. TOCA BOCA: Apply a bandage, send out party invitations, or join a tea party with the different variations of games that this digital design studio creates. Play skills are crucial to the development of a child with ASD, and games like these teach them how to engage in reciprocal social imaginative play. It’s encouraging to see apps like these in the market since it stresses the importance of one key truth, and that is, if you’ve met one kid with autism, you’ve met only one kid with autism. Every child learns differently, and creating tools that allow children to learn in a way that works best for them is one of the best things we can do to celebrate our differences. SP Diane M. LOL WITH JAMES ESTES!

GOTTA LOVE ‘EM One night I found my husband standing over our baby’s crib. Silently, I watched him as he stood looking down at the sleeping infant. I saw on his face a mixture of emotions: disbelief, doubt, delight, amazement, enchantment, skepticism. Touched by this unusual display and the deep emotions it aroused in me, with eyes glistening I slipped my arm around him. “A penny for your thoughts,” I said. “It’s amazing!” he replied. “I just can’t see how anybody can make a crib like this for only $67.50.” — MOM OF NEWBORN
