MARY SHARES MINDING OUR HEARTS

T

here are a lot of “firsts” us parents have with our children throughout their lives. This month is about first dental checkup and first summer camp! I can tell you it was hard the first time I sent my son to a day camp along with his cousin. A bus picked them up at a local church. My sister and I followed the bus, just to be sure! Next, my daughter wanted to go to an away camp (4 hours away) in third grade with her best friend. My husband and I stayed in that town the whole week, just in case! So you see, “firsts” may be uncomfortable for us parents, but the benefits are long lasting. Learn the benefits from our Camp articles this month and every month through July. You will be inspired to find the perfect camp. That first dental check-up is important too. February is Dental Awareness month for Children. We share with you in our article, “The Tooth about your Kids Dental Health,” tips and first visit recommendations to inspire you to consider that first visit. Of course Valentine’s Day is celebrated this month, and we celebrate with the ones we love. For our kids and teenagers, it may be hard to see beyond the glitter of cards and boxes of chocolate to the real meaning of love; so be certain to talk about the godly perspective of true love. It’s more than a feeling! We need to consider that the most important thing to God is that we love each other. Love is not a theory or a gooey feeling; it’s about how you treat people. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, love is defined by what it does or does not do. We read that “love endures long and is patient and kind; love is never envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful…. It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly); it is not quick tempered and does not act unbecomingly. This is a tall but manageable order. Here are some tips to help your family show true love. *Serve other people before yourself. This mere act of putting someone else first says you view their needs above your own; *Meet a need of someone without them knowing it was you. It’s hard to do for others without getting the acknowledgement, but try and see! *Is there something you want? Well, give that “want” to someone who has a “need” for it. Sometimes we have more than we need; bless someone else! *Commit to holding your tongue the next time someone is gossiping, and instead, say something good about that person; be bold, you could change someone for the better. At the close of this letter, know that I may not know you (whoever reads this note) but I can tell you that I see God’s love reflected in the faces of our communities by the way we come together. I so enjoy meeting our readers and advertisers at expos or from an email that is sent my way and of course through the beautiful images of your children that grace my mailbox daily. Keep a look out in this issue for upcoming Expos that we will be sponsoring. We would love to meet you! SP

YOU SHOULD KNOW TEEN LOVE! It’s so important to be playful with our teens. When life is becoming more serious for them, our interactions have a tendency towards being more serious too. So make every effort to keep an element of play going. This is a great way to stay physically in touch too. They may shy away from cuddles, but are comfortable with a tussle!

TWO MINUTE RULE

CLEAN, HEALTHY

CONSIDER CAMP Do you remember the first time you tried something new and succeeded? Well, summer campers are given the chance to try sports and activities they never imagined they could do. And further, peers and counselors champion them through these experiences, giving campers a sense of accomplishment and value! It’s amazing how a skilled, caring, camp counselor can nudge a child outside their comfort zone and encourage a new experience. And the absolute best part is at pick-up! Oh, the excited conversations in the car are amazing!

teeth come from brushing longer, not harder. Children (and adults too) should brush their teeth for two minutes at least twice a day (after breakfast and before bedtime). Singing a favorite song or using a toothbrush that plays a melody can encourage brushing for the full two minutes. Be sure to use a toothbrush with soft bristles.

KINDNESS IS KEY It’s Valentine’s Day. With love in the air, we ask, “Why do some relationships last and some don’t?” Scientific evidence says it comes down to kindness. Kindness in the way partners interact with each other. And the evidence also shows that the more someone receives kindness, the more they will be kind themselves, which leads to upward spirals of love in a relationship. So be kind to your Valentine.

CLASSIC PLAY

PEEK-A-BOO! Not only is it great fun, playing peek-a-boo stimulates baby’s senses, builds gross motor skills, strengthens visual tracking and encourages social development. Plus it teaches object permanence, the understanding that objects still exist even when they can’t be seen. Object permanence develops between 6-12 months, but babies of all ages love playing peek-a-boo. It’s also a great game for older siblings to play with babies as they share a connection laughing together. Other classic interactive games include “this little piggy”, “pop goes the weasel” or “clap hands.”

A. There are about 12 vitamins and 15 min-

affects about 20 percent of Americans; however remains a mystery! Exactly what causes IBS symptoms can’t be definitively identified by members of the medical field. Symptoms vary with each person. For some, IBS symptoms are mild and manageable. These usually do not interfere with daily lifestyles. For others, IBS may severely reduce their quality of life. Determining what the triggers are for symptoms is key. Certain foods stimulate the GI tract, and for those with IBS eating too much of these (foods) might worsen symptoms. Also, stress can be a trigger for IBS symptoms. If you are suffering from symptoms often it’s best to get some guidance on starting an elimination diet. Your registered dietitian can help you identify foods that are a problem for you.

erals that are essential to optimal health, so picking just one as the most healthy is difficult! The good news is you can get adequate vitamins and minerals from your daily food choices. Whole grains for B vitamins, fruits and veggies for anti-oxidants and dairy for calcium, magnesium, potassium and protein. Taking a multi-vitamin daily or every other day is fine. Consider though that Vitamin D it is not found in adequate amounts in most multi-vitamins, so supplementing with around 1000IU daily is a good idea. Ask your doctor to test your vitamin D level at your next check up. Not sure - ask your Registered Dietitian! CAROL IRETON-JONES, PHD, RDN, LD Good Nutrition for Good Living

Work with his/her teacher to create a more challenging curriculum through online tutoring services or specialized apps like Tynker, that teach computer programming. You can also use these types of personalized learning services at home and even on vacation. Students who are engaged in their learning and aren’t held back will grow in confidence academically and emotionally. Q. I am due to deliver twins in 2 months. I am concerned about flat head developing. Are there ways of avoiding this? I would like advice on how to position my children to avoid flat head. A. Great question! Multiples are at higher risk for plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) so it is terrific that

you are planning ahead. Here are a few tips to help keep your babies’ heads round. *Be mindful of time spent in containers like swings, bouncy seats, boppy pillows and Rock n Play sleepers, especially for the first few months. They should not be in these devices more than 3 hours a day, total, so vary their positions regularly and remember, back sleeping on a flat surface is best! *Watch the shapes of their heads daily (looking from the top is easiest). Flattening happens very quickly (first two months.) Be proactive when you see a change and talk to your pediatrician right away to get a therapy referral. Specific repositioning strategies can correct a misshapen skull if done early on.

The T th ABOUT YOUR KIDS DENTAL HEALTH

G

ood dental habits begin early on, and by caring for your baby’s mouth and teeth from the get go, you will help your children develop good dental habits.

• Even before a baby cuts her first tooth, parents should be wiping the gums clean with a bit of moistened gauze wrapped around your finger or you can use a moistened baby washcloth. When a tooth erupts, continue this wiping method after meals and before bed. • It is recommended that you begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they break through the gum with a soft infant toothbrush and water. Unless it is advised by your child’s pediatric dentist, do not use fluoridated toothpaste until age 2-3. • Gentle flossing should begin when two adjacent teeth touch. You are just disrupting the bacterial flora between the teeth. By about kindergarten or first grade, you can start to teach kids how to floss on their own. • Avoid putting anything other than water in baby’s bed-time bottle to prevent baby-bottle tooth decay. • Encourage your child to drink from a cup as they approach their first birthday. • Drinking juice from a bottle should be avoided, juice should only be offered in a cup. • Dental sealants are an excellent way to prevent tooth decay in children. This procedure takes only minutes, is painless, is less than half the cost of a filling and is effective at stopping decay. Discuss this with your dentist. • Children involved in sports need proper mouth protection. Ask your child’s dentist about customized mouth guards. • If a permanent tooth gets knocked out follow these procedures: Gently rinse (not scrub) the tooth off and place it in a cup of warm milk (salt water is the second best choice; plain water, the third best), call the dentist and bring the child and the soaking tooth in immediately. SP

FIRST DENTAL VISIT SHOULD BE WITHIN A FEW MONTHS OF THE FIRST BABY TOOTH ERUPTING OR BY THE AGE OF ONE AT THE LATEST.

AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, THE PASSION IN A MARRIAGE CAN BEGIN TO FADE. KEEP THE FLAME ALIVE WITH THESE

TEN WAYS TO ROMANCE YOUR WIFE

1

LEARN HER LOVE LANGUAGE, AND THEN USE IT EVERY DAY. Read “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary

Chapman and figure out what you can do to become fluent in your wife’s love language. Then use what you have learned.

2

DATE YOUR WIFE. If you asked her out again today,

would she still be excited to say yes? You must have been pretty good at this at one time or she wouldn’t have married you! So why stop now? One date a month at a minimum. Use your imagination, get creative, and make it special.

3

MAKE HER FEEL SPECIAL (DON’T TAKE THE RELATIONSHIP FOR GRANTED). “She al-

ready knows she’s important to me,” is not a useful response. If you haven’t done something to demonstrate how special she is in – say – the past four hours, then you’ve already waited too long. This is not a high-budget item; it’s high-consideration. How about an “I love you” phone call, a simple card slipped in her purse, a mid-week lunch date, or flowers delivered to her office. Do you still open the car door? Serve her hot tea, wash her car, deliver an unexpected embrace, a foot rub, candles with dinner? You get the idea.

4

USE SOME IMAGINATION. Plan events, dates, eve-

nings at home, vacations – even stolen moments – with the kind of creative thinking that motivated you when you first asked her out. There’s a psychological concept known as the “self-fulfilling prophesy.” Simply put it means this: believe she’s worth the trouble and she will be; stop trying hard and so will she; bring some creative intention to your romance as if she still knocks your socks off – and she will.

5

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Check the scales, think

about how you dress around your wife, throw away the cigarettes, start some regular exercise, don’t be a slob. When she sees you, does she take a second look – or does she look away? Does the way you present yourself tell your wife you want her to be attracted to you – or do you take all that for granted?

6

SAY “I LOVE YOU”, AND SAY IT OFTEN. The

#1 misnomer believed by unromantic men is this, “I shouldn’t have to say it – she should know.” Saying “I love you” is the opposite of inflationary; it turns out “I love you” amplifies exponentially with usage.

7

BE KIND. Kindness could well be the “X-Factor” in romance. Being kind is underplayed, undervalued, underrated, and certainly underutilized. Want romance? Be “Mr. Kindness.” Learn to make thoughtfulness and consideration your second nature. NIice-guys really do finish first - and she’ll fall for you all over again.

8

BE A GENTLEMAN. Please don’t confuse being a gentleman with the medieval brand of chauvinism known as chivalry. Chivalry died a well-deserved death several centuries ago. Gentlemen, on the other hand, are courteous, respectful, well-mannered, faithful, generous, modest and charming. Stand up when she leaves the table, open the car door, walk on the street side of the walkway, help her on with her jacket, run to the car for her umbrella… you get the picture.

9

TELL HER SHE’S BEAUTIFUL. Women who hear their husband tell them they’re beautiful become more beautiful. Men who tell their wives they’re beautiful believe it with more conviction every time the words leave their lips. Love expressed = beauty; beauty = romance. It’s win-win.

10

SPEND UNINTERRUPTED TIME TOGETHER.

There are only 168 hours in each week – the number never varies. The amount of time we offer our relationships can appear like a vote as to how much we value the people we say we love. Romance, like anything else worthwhile, is worth the investment of time and attention. Huddle up with your wife tonight and ask her: Name three things you think of when I say the word “romance”. — Reprinted with permission

Self-Determination at

camp BY HEIDI SMITH LUEDTKE, PHD

P

arents spend a lot of time trying to motivate kids. We use chore charts, checklists, reminders and rewards to get them to feed the dog, clean their rooms, and complete schoolwork. But these techniques don’t change behavior long-term. Real motivation must come from within.

The Psychology of Summer Camp

Time at camp may be all it takes to spark a little self-determination in your kid. I know it sounds too good to be true. Your school-age slacker – the one who expects you to find his homework and pack his lunch – might start doing some things for himself. And your oftenbored tween might come home with more pep in her step. Psychologists use self-determination theory (SDT) to explain why some experiences make us feel engaged and excited while others drain and deplete us. The premise is simple: when an activity meets our needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, we are energized and empowered. Kids’ basic needs are no different from adults’. Kids want to do things for themselves. They crave a sense of accomplishment and routinely seek feedback. (“Look what I made, Mom!”) And kids thrive on connections with loved ones and peers. Feelings of belonging will boost their self-worth. Summer camp

18

irving parent FEBRUARY 2015

offers loads of opportunities to meet all these needs. And that should make kids (and the parents who love them) very happy campers indeed.

Autonomy

The need for autonomy is satisfied when kids control their own lives. At camp, your son will have endless opportunities to care for himself. Staff won’t select his clothes, organize the contents of locker, or remind him to put on deodorant. No one will delay dessert until he eats his veggies. Independence is what camp is all about. Don’t worry. The world won’t stop if your son wears the same shirt three days in a row. His peers will speak up if he gets super stinky. During the school year, many kids jump from one regularly scheduled activity to the next with no unstructured time in between. Camp puts kids in charge of their own activities. Maybe your daughter will take a hike. Maybe she’ll paint pottery. Maybe she’ll write you an email. It’s up to her to decide how she’ll spend her free time. One thing is certain: she won’t sit around whining about having nothing to do. And if she does, you won’t be there to hear it.

Competence

The need for competence is satisfied when kids learn new things and get positive feedback about their efforts. Your kid might choose a camp focused on art, science, sports, or music. Or he may opt for a good old-fashioned sleep-away experience, complete with row boats and weenie roasts. Some camp activities may be outside your kid’s comfort zone. Stretching is good. Your child may be unsure she can cross the slippery log over the creek. She may tremble with excitement about her role in the theater production. Peers and counselors will coax her along and give constructive advice. By the end of camp, she’ll be the star of her own adventure stories. If your kid is an experienced camper, encourage him to share what he knows with newbies. Being an ambassador or mentor affirms kids’ competence in a big way. Teaching a peer how to trim a sail or chip a golf ball out of the tall grass will take your son’s skills to a higher level. His confidence will soar in response.

Relatedness

Your biggest concerns about summer camp may center on the social scene. Your child may not know anyone on arrival. That’s okay. Camps create connections in many ways. Your kid will be instantly bonded with bunkmates because they share a home base. Familystyle dining and friendly competitions encourage interaction. The pursuit of shared goals – like building a robot or putting a frog in the counselor’s sleeping bag – cements kids’ camaraderie. Extroverted kids may make lots of friends at camp. Less sociable souls may not. What matters most is that kids have opportunities to talk, play and live with a diverse group of peers. They won’t all become fast friends. Learning to navigate the choppy waters of friendship formation is a big part of the camp experience. Your kid’s social skillset will expand – even if she doesn’t find a new BFF. No matter what your kid takes to camp, he’ll come home with a suitcase full of memories and a renewed sense of self-determination. You’ll see it as soon as he wakes from his long post-camp nap! SP

SAT 14 THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF SHERLOCK HOLMES Exhibit Runs Feb. 14 - May 10. Elementary? Maybe for Sherlock Holmes, but how will you fare when you try to solve a captivating, original murder mystery in the tradition of the master detective? Come inside and find out! More than a century ago, in 1886, a struggling young doctor named Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a story about a brilliant and enigmatic detective. The 26-year-old author would probably have been amazed to know that Sherlock Holmes would become one of the most inspiring and influential characters of all time. The legendary sleuth of Baker Street, a chemistry and forensics expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial observations of evidence that others missed to solve the most baffling mysteries imaginable. His practices and techniques changed the way police work was conducted in the real world, lighting the way to the modern forensics of today. The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes brings this world to life as never before as you step into Conan Doyle’s Victorian London and work side-by-side with his legendary detective. You will become Holmes’ eyes and ears as he tackles a baffling new case in a world steeped in innovation and experimentation. Along the way you’ll see a dazzling array of original manuscripts, publications, period artifacts, film and television props and costumes. You’ll learn to use

GOTTA LOVE ‘EM I took my 6 year old son to see a play at our local community theater. The main character was a little boy who did a great job singing and dancing. It made me wonder if my own son would enjoy acting, so at the intermission break I asked him, “Do you think you could get up on the stage and sing and dance?” Not missing a beat, he replied “Okay, but they’re probably going to ask me to get off.” ANNE OF FLOWER MOUND

BACKTALK { BY KEN SWARNER }

MY FAVORITE CHILD “

Y

ou like him best!”Have your kids hit you with that one? It’s almost as much fun as a cold sore. The phrase usually spills out of my daughter’s mouth the minute I have

disciplined her for something that she testifies I didn’t punish her brother for doing. On other occasions my son will accuse me of favoritism because, according to him, I ALWAYS go easier on his sister for crimes that he paid dearly for doing. It’s at times like these I stand before them as they argue and whine...wondering what single people are doing. My daughter approaches this issue as if she’s an actor in a melodramatic reading. Throwing herself to the floor she’ll twist and moan: “You like Alasdair better. You probably wish I were never born. Maybe I should just stay in my room all day and never say a word - that way you can work on your will and give everything to your son. Uh!” Finally she’ll look up from the kitchen floor. “Dad, what are you doing?” “Making popcorn. Bravo.” My son takes a more direct approach. “Well, you obviously have to live with yourself.” I don’t know where this mistrust and paranoia comes from. I am sure child psychologists could explain it to me, but whatever they said

Opening the door, I’ll find the other child standing there shaking her head in disbelief. “A week? He got a week?” My problem, of course, is that I engage. I immediately take the stand as if I’m the defendant in court. “Yes, your honor, a week.”

wouldn’t change the fact that my son asked me the other day if his

sister had diplomatic immunity.

“Yes, for messing up my den.”

The part I hate the most however is the extra work caused by these disputes. I now record and gather evidence solely so I can defend myself in cross-examination. I know I not only have to hand down judgments, but I have to be ready for the appeal process as well. Foolishly, I thought this behavior would improve with age, but as my children approach the teen years it’s getting worse. If I didn’t know better, I’d think they were destined to be trial lawyers...or pro basketball players. My children are always watching - recording - checking up to see

The child steadies herself on the doorjamb. “I left a paperclip out of place on your desk last year and I got a month...a month.” That was how this Tuesday started. I guess I had finally had enough and I snapped. I ushered my daughter into the den and closed the door. “You know why I gave you a month, don’t you?” She looked confused. “No. Why?” I grabbed her hands into mine, stared warmly into her eyes, and said sarcastically: “Because sweetie, mom and I like your brother better.”
