Great leaders should be experts at building and utilizing the best talents, capabilities, skills, and resources of their people. Too many individuals, teams, and organizations are only utilizing a fraction of the talent and capabilities of their people. It is crucial today to be successfully leveraging and multiplying their people’s capabilities.

Clarify, focus on, build agreement around, and communicate as much as possible the importance of aligning their vision, mission, goals, and strategies to produce the best and most meaningful results. Too many organizations suffer from a massive lack of clarity and agreement around what is important and valuable. A well aligned and communicated vision, mission, and values are the best drivers of meaningful goals and strategies. The failure to have clear reasons why the chosen goals and strategies are the best possible choices produces a lack of congruence, alignment, commitment, and engagement, and ultimately, inferior results. Great leaders never allow this to happen.

To be of the greatest effectiveness and success, planning of strategy must be in alignment with the company’s vision, mission, and goals. The less clear that the vision, mission, and goals are, the more the planning looks like a dense exercise in throwing things against the wall and seeing what sticks. This is truly inadequate maximizing impact and success. However, too many organizations refuse to acknowledge how poor and/or broken their strategic planning process is, which is easily corrected if the key principles for effectiveness are employed.

The keys to success start with having clear, meaningful, and measureable results that everyone agrees is worth achieving. For too many people and companies, coaching is just about the process QH CUMKPI SWGUVKQPU CPF VCNMKPI VJKPIU QWV QT ſZKPI RGQRNG 6JGTG are two kinds of coaching: remedial and developmental. The key to maximizing success is investing in your best people and developing them. Maximum success starts with mutual agreement on the meaningful metrics of success, the critical outcomes, and the valuable advances and impact required. We must make sure that what we are doing is providing meaningful business results, as well as the personal and professional development that will sustain these results with your best and most talented people.

Q:

You can best judge a leader by what is going on around him or her. Nothing differentiates leaders like how passionate, committed, and effective their followers are. John Blackwell Senior Production Cook, Main, Kitchen, VA Medical Center Brockton, MA

Not afforded the luxury or option to complete high school, John L. Blackwell Sr. quit school after the eighth e grade to help earn money for his family’s well-being. John’s father, who was a sous chef at the Taunton Inn in Taunton, Massachusetts, would bring him to workk with him from time to time and John would watch as he created dishes for customers. customers In 1959, John began working with his father at the Inn. Hired as a pot and pan washer, it was a foot in the door to making money and contributing to his family. Soon after, the Inn lost one of its cooks and he was promoted and trained as a line cook, which lasted until 1963 when he decided to join the US Air Force. While serving in the US Air Force, John was able to earn his GED. By the time he exited his military duties in 1969, he landed a job working at the Red Coach Grille in Middleboro, Massachusetts as a chef. Two years later he changed jobs to become broiler cook on the night shift at Barrachis Restaurant in Dedham, Massachusetts. There, he worked the broiler, sautéed, did the meat cutting, and baked the bread, as much as 800 loaves a day. By 1972, John had acquired a position at Little Jim’s Restaurant as their chef. Two years into working for them, the owner was ready to retire and sell the place. So John decided to buy to take a chance and he bought it from him. Becoming the owner and chef of his own restaurant, Lena’s LaCasa, in Providence, Rhode Island, he ran a very successful business for over 10 years. Serving up some of the best beef and steak dishes, to seafood, chicken, veal, and pasta, John was running a great restaurant that he poured his heart and soul into. Lena’s LaCasa was well-known by locals and was even written about several times in the local papers for their great food. But in 1982, the local bridge near his restaurant had closed, ultimately causing his restaurant to close its doors. “If it had not been for the City of Providence closing down this bridge, I believe I would still own and run this once very successful business,” John said. With his head held high, John had no choice but to move on. Over the next 12 years after his business closed down, he worked for several more restaurants as a kitchen manager, chef, marketing manager, sauté cook, head chef, night supervisor for an airlines, and ran a catering business with one of his bosses. He even organized and coordinated the CHEERS Boston party for the State House in 1993. 11

John had his ups and downs, but he never quit. At a certain point in John’s career, he was ready to get closer to home where he grew up in Massachusetts. He always tries to surround himself with production outlets that work in the same area he does, such as Studio 601, Gatorvision, Pink Sneakers Productions, etc. As a freelance cameraman, Armand works on many different events and TV trucks. The crew of people he works with is always changing, including the director.

“Making them proud is my biggest goal and I don’t intend on disappointing them in anything I do.

“I’m the eyes of the director. Without cameramen, the director would not know what was happening and would not be able to put together the broadcast you see on TV. All live TV broadcasts are conducted by directors, who are all-seeing, but cameramen are crucial to the director being omniscient and letting the audience forget that there is a team behind the scenes making sure the broadcast is great. For anyone interested in the broadcast industry, Armand warns that you must maintain a thick skin. “This industry’s toughest aspect can sometimes be the people in it. Due to high stress levels and potentially millions of people watching, perfection is a requirement. If anything is messed up because of you, there’s nothing stopping the crew and your superiors from letting you know that you screwed up. And most of the time, it’s harsh. However, you can rise to the top if you stay dedicated and continue to keep pushing forward.

During his free time, Armand loves to read and exercise. “Will Smith once said that these two things are very important, because there is no problem today that wasn’t around before we were born. The answers can be found in books, if you take the time out to read. Also, during intense exercise, everything in your body is telling you to stop and quit. Exercise is practice for pushing past that and strengthening your determination.â€? Armand strives to become the best cameraman who ever lived. “I always strive to be bold, tenacious, and enthusiastic and take what I do very serious. My brother can’t comprehend why I’m always gone, but I know it’s so he never has to worry about anything for his entire life.â€?

“LIFE IS SHORT! ACTING ON YOUR FEARS AND GOING THROUGH A LITTLE PAIN IS UNAVOIDABLE, SO EMBRACE IT. FEAR AND PAIN ARE AVENUES OF GROWTH, BUT AT

Michael Lawrence Segreto Instructional Center Assistant Academic Support Tutor, Workshop Facilitator, Business Division Substitute Instructor Elgin Community College Elgin, IL

While attending Elgin Community College (ECC) to earn his second associate’s degree, Michael Lawrence Segreto received praise from many of his instructors regarding his presentation and teaching abilities, and he was recommended to continue his education to teach at the college level. In 2007, a year after completing his second associate’s degree, one of Michael’s instructors suggested he serve as her in-class tutor, assisting students during class sessions. Not only did his tutoring role grow from there, but his educational career at ECC expanded. “I enjoy hearing students and colleagues comment that my contributions positively impact the success of their education and the functioning of the college,” Michael said about receiving praise as an instructor. At ECC, Michael has four main roles: instructional center assistant; academic support tutor; workshop facilitator; and business division substitute instructor. Promoting a positive learning atmosphere to encourage academic success, Michael brings his quick wit and punning ability to the classroom. In addition to assisting students with computer related coursework, /KEJCGN CFOKPKUVGTU EQWTUG RTQſEKGPE[ CPF /KETQUQHV 1HſEG 5RGEKCNKUV %GTVKſECVKQP GZCOU VQ ECPFKFCVGU *G CNUQ ETGCVGU CPF revises instructional and informational materials for the college and provides in-class, private, and online assistance to students. Dedicated to a successful educational career, Michael possesses and maintains a lifelong commitment to learning new material and new techniques. If a course is upgrading to the next edition or version of a textbook or computer program, Michael must stay current on the new material. And because learning techniques differ from student to student, Michael can adjust his existing teaching techniques and formulate new ones to assist a struggling student. 51

Both presentations demonstrated using technology to engage students in interactive activities, learning and reinforcing their knowledge of course content, and practicing soft skills such as communication and teamwork. Michael also prepared a PowerPoint presentation in 2013 geared to help students manage their time and enhance their study skills. The presentation, titled If Only I Had Time!, was incorporated into a time management workshop offered by ECC’s academic support department. Michael was recognized for his work with ECC student’s when he was nominated in 2013 and 2014 for ECC’s annual William Foulkes Service Award and Service to Students Award.
