ho would have guessed? After coming south across Cypress Creek as a little girl in the 50s and 60s with my mother behind the wheel, Pittsburg would become my home, a haven of good friends, laughter and nostalgia.

It was in the spring of 1976, after years of living in Marshall and graduating from high school, then moving to Tyler to attend Tyler Junior College and then to Mesquite after marriage, my husband and I planned to move to Mount Pleasant, the city where I spent my childhood.

For those of you who don’t know, in 1969, General Dynamics in Lone Star closed its facilities and my mother worked there as an administrative assistant to Bill Robinson. They gave her the choice of transferring to Fort Worth or quitting her job and starting over. She chose to live near her sister Mary in Marshall and work for another company called Thiokol in Karnack, the home of Lady Bird Johnson.

Those childhood memories of coming to Pittsburg to pick peas and butter beans from my Aunt Gla’s house weren’t that appealing until I remembered how good they tasted. And those wonderful crappie fish fries that Happy Day would cook in his back yard. You could almost taste it when you thought of it. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the best homemade peach ice cream ever made by my Aunt Nora Belle (Mayben) who lived in Pittsburg (the mother of Vicki O’Quinn and grandmother of Stacy Behymer). Nora Belle was a Redfearn from Mount Pleaant who met up with my uncle Andy at the Rio Palm Isle, something you would have never guessed if you had known her. Oh, and by the way, I think that was Hazel Spearman’s homemade peach ice cream recipe.

Did I say the plan was to move to Mount Pleasant? After arriving there we stayed at an apartment out by Interstate 30 that was available for new people beginning work at Texas Utilities, which is now known as Luminant. The water in Mount Pleasant wasn’t quite like I remembered and the cost of living was a bit higher in the city north of Pittsburg. My cousin Paul Raymond Mayben, who lived in Pittsburg, invited us to give Pittsburg a try. We could live in a brand new apartment for $125 a month and it was just a little farther for my husband to drive to work. So just like that—without giving it a second thought—Pittsburg became our home.

Today, not only does Pittsburg put on its finest when entertaining, we love the cultural arts programs at Northeast Texas Community College. This spring “Greater Tuna” and “Restless Heart” will take the stage at the Whatley Center, among other types of entertainment. And you will see in this magazine we have so much to be proud of in this little city.

And those peaches, peas and butter beans? Well, you can hardly find a parking place in the spring, summer and fall where they sell them. I might have been born in Mount Pleasant but Pittsburg is my home and it is one of the finest small towns on earth.

My hometown ...

a place to vist, a place to call home

Pittsburg, Texas by some is called a city or a town, but to me I am happy calling it “home.” I was raised in Pittsburg and have now grown up to serve my hometown in various roles including mayor the last 10 years.

H

ome is defined as a place where one lives, a residence; an environment offering security and happiness; a dwelling place with family; a valued place regarded as a refuge or place of origin; and a place where people are cared for.

In my 42 years living in Pittsburg and serving our community in multiple capacities, I have been fortunate enough to witness or be part of the true definition of “home.”

In serving my hometown as a funeral director for almost 25 years, I have witnessed the love that abounds and the outpouring of support during peoples most traumatic times in their lives.

This is not the exception, rather the rule when it comes to the genuine goodness in the hearts of people of Pittsburg.

In serving my hometown as mayor for the past 10 years I can not count the many times that people have come to me concerned about the well being of someone other than themselves.

It may be someone asking how they can help an individual person or what can we do for the youth to help keep them on the right path. Our civic organizations, our churches, and many other groups spend countless hours giving back to our community in order to make Pittsburg a better place now and in the future.

In serving my hometown in law enforcement as deputy constable a little over a year now, I have again witnessed people step up to help someone in need. Neighbors watching out for neighbors, friends watching out for friends, and family taking care of family.

Pittsburg has a group of first responders, law enforcement, fire, and EMS that truly care about the safety and well being of the people.

My “home” or “hometown” is important to me and as mayor I have always wanted to maintain that close knit community feel

while at the same time grow our community for generations to come to enjoy and prosper.

We have maintained our parks for everyone to enjoy while at the same time we have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars upgrading the parks including making them more handicap accessible, adding new playground equipment and most recently opening the splash pad. We continue to look for ways to continue to improve our parks and extend their use to even more adults and children.

We have maintained our downtown area offering incentives to both our existing and new businesses in order to maintain and grow the downtown which is an important part of Pittsburg’s history and future.

We are consistently reaching out to potential new businesses in an attempt to entice them to join our community in order to offer expanded options to Pittsburg. We have had a number of new businesses open in Pittsburg the last couple of years and are looking for 2017 to be an even better year for development.

We have so many things to offer and we have so much potential. I am so proud to be a part of Pittsburg and I look forward to working together in growing Pittsburg and seeing what the future brings.

It is not by accident that I have mentioned “we” so many times.

It has been mentioned because everything that gets accomplished in Pittsburg is and must be a group effort. We are always looking for new ideas and volunteers to keep and grow Pittsburg, so if you are a long time resident or new to the area, become part of “we” and make Pittsburg truly your Home.

The vision for Cypress Bank started in the 1970s

The vision of the charter directors of Cypress Bank was based on their belief in the character of the community. he character of Cypress Bank’s leadership was demonstrated not by early success, but by response to an initial failure. When the first application for a state charter was rejected, the board demonstrated its resolve by revising and resubmitting the application, which was approved March 18, 1976. The insurance of accounts was approved on Oct. 3, 1977 and the bank officially opened.

From the beginning as a home mortgage financial center in Pittsburg, Cypress Bank has flourished. Today, Cypress Bank offers a full range of financial services with banking centers in Camp, Hunt, Morris, and Titus counties.

Cypress Savings & Loan Association began with capital of $500,000 and three full-time employees. The institution ended 2016 at $175 million. Cypress is the result of the vision of a number of local businessmen, who in the mid 1970s saw the need, and the opportunity, for a financial institution to specialize in serving the home finance needs of Camp County and surrounding areas. From this vision, individuals such as Bullard Johns, Don Reynolds, V.C. Couch, Earl Julian, and others spearheaded the effort necessary to charter such an organization. From the time the first stock was sold, it was three years before Cypress opened as a state chartered savings and loan association. After several meetings with the Texas Savings & Loan Commissioner’s office in Austin, bank organizers were granted a charter March 18, 1976. The Savings & Loan opened in a temporary location and occupied its present offices at 120 S. Greer Boulevard on Jan. 5, 1978.

The late 70s represented a time of strong economic activity. It took only five months for Craig Chesley, the first president of Cypress Savings & Loan, to announce the business had surpassed $2 million in total assets. Coincidently, 1977 also marked the beginning of the deregulation of interest rates by the federal government. Not too long after opening, interest rates on two-and-a- half year certificates deposit went as high as 16 1/2 percent with rates of 20 percent being offered for six-month certificates. The escalating level of mortgage interest rates presented a difficult environment for the organization of 6 • IN & AROUND PITTSBURG January 2017

a sufficient volume of home loans. As interest rates began to fall, the early 1980s presented new opportunities for growth and a branch office was opened in Lone Star in August 1981. One year later, the Commerce branch of First Modern Savings of Greenville was purchased.

Mr. Chesley resigned in 1984 and Gary Bicknell was hired as president. This was the same year the bank’s name was changed to Cypress Bank Savings Association to reflect its role as a traditional banking center.

By 1987, the bank had outgrown its home office and an expansion project increased the physical plant by approximately 50 percent. The bank’s name was changed to Cypress Bank, Federal Savings Bank in 1989 to reflect the conversion to a federal charter. To better serve its ever-growing customer base, in 1997 Cypress Bank expanded its home office facility to include a six-lane motor bank located directly behind the bank’s headquarters.

The third phase of the bank’s expansion was undertaken in 1998 with construction of a new safe deposit box vault, offices, a new conference room, and a drive-up ATM. Following that, the bank was expanded to create approximately 2,700 feet of new office space to house the bank’s lending functions.

In January 2002, the bank acted to acquire the Mount Pleasant office of Jefferson Heritage Bank. This purchase presented the opportunity to expand Cypress’ already significant lending presence in the Titus County area. Construction of a new 3,000-square-foot facility in Commerce, an investment in excess of $1 million, was completed in 2008. During the first days in the new facility, deposits swelled by over $1.6 million.

Located in the piney and hardwood forests of Northeast Texas, Pittsburg is a great place to live, work, start a new business or get away for a weekend. Located on U.S. Highway 271, one of the busiest highways in East Texas, Pittsburg sits in the geographical center of Northeast Texas.

D

esignated as a Main Street City in 1986, Pittsburg’s charm is evident in its unique shops, the newly constructed Pilgrim Plaza and the Prayer Tower with Paccard bells from France that chime the hour with melodies that can be heard all through the historic downtown. The Prayer Tower was dedicated to the city in April 1992. Our Main Street boasts a variety of unique, independently owned shops including men’s and women’s clothing, an all-natural soap shop, antiques and gift shops.

While downtown, you can also try our world-famous hot links at Pittsburg Hot Links on “back street” made famous in 1918 by Mr. Charlie Hasselback. Today, the hot links of Pittsburg are served much like they were originally, on butcher paper with saltine crackers and a bottle of hot sauce on each table. Pittsburg Hot Links have been described as East Texas Caviar.

Pittsburg is also known for its peaches, blueberries and strawberries in the spring. Take a trip out to Efurds on U.S. Highway 271 and enjoy true southern hospitality from the staff and some of their homemade ice cream and peaches and stock up on all your favorite jams, jellies, fresh produce and fruit while you are there. Efurds Orchards has been serving the Pittsburg area since 1972 in their family owned and operated business. Conveniently located just three miles south of Pittsburg on U.S. Highway 271, their famous peaches are in season from mid-May to September. Pumpkins are available in the fall and they close after pumpkin season.

Pittsburg is home to two award winning museums, the Depot Museum and the Farmstead Museum. The Pittsburg Depot was obtained by the city from the Southern Pacific Railroad and now houses a fascinating array of antiques and artifacts.

The once native Caddo Indians are the focus of an archeology exhibit. Other exhibit areas feature a working telegraph station, an 1894 telephone switchboard, a printing press, Model T Ford and a 1909 surrey. In one building are a firetruck, a steam engine and a small art gallery.

The Ezekiel Airship is the real crowd pleaser in the Depot Museum. Reverend Burrell Cannon, a part time preacher and inventor, built the flying machine in 1902. His design was based on descriptions from the Book of Ezekiel in the Bible.

A test flight was reported in 1902, before the Wright Brothers were airborne. The original craft was destroyed while being transported to St. Louis for the 1904 World’s Fair. The full-size replica that is housed at the Depot Museum was built by the Pittsburg Optimist Club in the 1980s.

Peach picking time starts in late spring and continues through August.

Pittsburg has several orchards that offer fresh strawberries, peaches, peas, corn, squash, tomatoes, watermelons, butter beans, onions, okra and many, many more jams, jellies and other condiments.

Downtown Pittsburg is on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. The turnof-the-century buildings, historical homes and the churches with breathtaking stained glass windows make a visit downtown a memorable trip. Tracing your East Texas ancestors is easy in the large genealogical section of the public library and the friendly county court house. Historic graveyards abound in the area, many with marked graves dating back to the 1850s. Camp County has over 25 historic markers within its boundaries.

Looking to unwind and relax, look no further than Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards. Enjoy an unhurried glass of wine overlooking the vineyard while listening to live jazz. The restaurant was voted #3 best winery restaurant by USA Today and features a myriad of things from brick oven pizzas to tapas platters and a weekly Chefs Special by Chef Enam Chowdhury. Enjoying a wine tasting at Los Pinos is a little different than most wineries. Because they like to focus on the fun aspects of life, they have developed the Tasting Block Flights. Visitors who want to taste the wines can choose either a Sweet Flight or a Dry Flight that are served to your table in miniature carafes. Tours of the winery production area are offered on the hour starting at noon, Friday and Saturday, ending at 5 p.m.

Pittsburg offers festivals throughout the year for visitors to enjoy. The Art & Wine Festival takes place annually on Memorial Day Weekend and offers live music, wineries and local artisans and food vendors downtown around Pilgrim Plaza. Main Street Market is a series of open-air markets in historic downtown. With a country, fair flavor, the markets provide a venue for individuals to market goods and products to consumers in a community friendly environment. Four markets are held per year, each with its own unique theme. Home for the Holidays happens Thanksgiving weekend for all the family to enjoy. An ice skating rink, open air market, movies in the Plaza and other activities take place Friday – Sunday in downtown.

Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum

As the last passenger train pulled out of the Cotton Belt Depot at 2:47 p.m. on April 22, 1956, the passenger-era in Pittsburg came to a close. Passenger service was instituted in 1881.

“This was the beginning of the end to our depot,” said Fanny Hively, museum director.

T

he Cotton Belt Depot was built in 1901. In the early 90s the City of Pittsburg acquired the depot that was in deplorable shape.

“As I understand the acquisition of the depot, then Mayor David Abernathy and City Manager Ned Muse put pressure on the railroad personnel to sell the depot to the city or they were going to condemn the building,” said Hively. “The railroad did not want to go to the expense of tearing it down, so they sold the building to the city for approximately $9,000.”

Restoration of the depot began in the winter of 1990 when John Holman asked Billy Law to be building chairman to restore the depot and convert it into a museum. After approximately oneand-a-half years of hard work by dedicated volunteers and support of community businesses an open house was held August 30, 1991.

“When you tour The Depot you will find the building still re12 • IN & AROUND PITTSBURG January 2017

tains many of the details from its former life as a railroad depot, including the original ticket window,” said Hively.

The Depot exhibits include old telegraph machines, pictures of early trains and the newest exhibit, the history room, which depicts the early history of Pittsburg. Also exhibited is a visual history of agriculture, early Caddo Indian artifacts, antique farming equipment and other interesting items.

Leaving The Depot via the loading dock you will enter the annex. This building was built in late 1993 and early 1994. The building houses a restored 1925 American La France 1,000 gallons per minute pumper, an Atlas steam engine that was used to power a sawmill and a cotton gin in Camp County, and a 1925 three-door Model T Ford that was purchased by Mary Lou Pitts Abernathy, (1863 to 1950) the grandmother of longtime Mayor David Abernathy. After her death, the mayor converted the Model T into the

“speedster” configuration. The mayor rode this car in all of our parades until his death. There is also a wall displaying memorabilia of famous people who were from Pittsburg and an art gallery containing works of artists from the Northeast Texas area.

In 2001, Pittsburg residents built a custom annex to the town’s depot and museum to house the replica of the Ezekiel Airship.

In 1902, the Rev. Burrell Cannon, a local Baptist minister, had read in the book of Ezekiel of “living creatures” rising from the earth and a “wheel within a wheel.” He believed that these bible passages contained the secret to powered flight. Cannon formed the Ezekiel Air Ship Mfg Co., sold $20,000 in stock to his neighbors, and supervised the construction of his contraption in a local iron foundry. It had large, fabric covered wings and was powered by a small engine that turned four sets of vertical paddles mounted on wheels within wheels. It would fly the same way that a side wheel paddleboat churns its way through water – except that paddles don’t work that way in the air and Ezekiel mentioned nothing about wings or an engine. So how could it be biblical and how could it possibly fly?

In a quote from Lenita Prothro Tacea., Cannon’s granddaughter: (Interview in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, November 7, 1976) “Grandfather couldn’t fly a plane, he was too big – so someone else acted as pilot. The plane flew a total of 167 feet at Pittsburg, but being over-heavy, it hit a fence and was damaged.”

In another account, local history teacher Nina Berry often told her high school classes about Mr. Aubrey Swaim, later a Pittsburg bank president, who heard the ship was to be tested.

He and his brother, Parvin, went to see it. He told of it rising off the ground and drifting over the fence on which several boys were sitting, and of the wild scramble to get out of the way. (This story confirmed by Grace Swaim and Aubrey Cross, Parvin’s daughters in 2001.) And yet if true, the Rev. Cannon’s airship would have beaten the Wright Brothers’ craft by over a year.

In 1987, the local Optimists’ Club built a fullscale replica of what is now called “The Ezekiel Airship,” based on one surviving photo. The replica is hung from the rafters.

“The Ezekiel Airship is the biggest drawing card to our museum,” said Hively “Last year we had approximately 3,000 visitors tour the museum. They come from all over the United States and many foreign countries.”

Also operating under the umbrella of the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum is The Farmstead.

Early in 1994, Hal Hoffman gave his family’s homestead, the Hoffman house to John Holman to be a part of The Farmstead. The house, located approximately two miles from town was moved in two pieces to the property located at 206 Mount Pleasant Street. The house was restored to its original condition using many of the original items belonging to the Hoffmans.

Also located on the property is a general store, a large barn, a pavilion, a smoke house and a well.

“We also have a chicken house that houses our one fancy rooster and his flock of hens,” said Hively. “The hens don’t lay many eggs in the winter; however, they more than make up for it in the warmer months. We sell the eggs to the public at a very reasonable price. The children are especially excited when they see the chickens,” she said.

“On a final note, I want to invite everyone to come visit us,” said Hively. “We have so much to offer and we are the largest tourist attraction in Pittsburg.”

o visit to Pittsburg can be called complete without a leisurely visit to Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards. Wine aficionados and neophytes alike will enjoy the decidedly un-snobby atmosphere of Los Pinos, whether it’s for an authentic tasting from their impressive selection of wines, a unique offering of distinctive tapas, or just a relaxing evening of live jazz.

Lake Bob Sandlin

A top destination any time of year Lake Bob Sandlin is on Big Cypress Creek on the border of Titus and Camp counties about six miles southwest of Mount Pleasant and six miles northwest of Pittsburg

As early as the 1950s, proponents advocated the construction of a reservoir on Big Cypress Creek to secure adequate water supply for the region as well as attract industrial growth. On February 19, 1966, Titus County Fresh Water Supply District No. 1 was created, and local businessman and civic leader Bob Sandlin was named president. Texas Utilities Electric Company eventually signed on with the project, and property acquisition began in 1973.

Construction of Fort Sherman Dam, named after the local historic site of Fort Sherman, began in 1974. The earthfill dam was built to a maximum height of 69 feet, a top width of 25 feet, and consisted of a total length of 10,800 feet. The lake was named in honor of its major proponent, and a formal dedication ceremony occurred on June 25, 1978. Impoundment for the 9,460-acre lake began, and the state-owned project cost a total of 32 million dollars. In addition to its function of water storage and industrial use, the reservoir has become known as a top bass-fishing lake for anglers. Lake Bob Sandlin State Park on the north shore in Titus County provides a recreational outlet for area residents and tourists.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park features abundant overnight facilities, including camping areas, screened shelters, and air-conditioned cottages. Several miles of hiking trails wind through the former farmland that has returned to a wooded state of oak, bois d’arc, hickory, red maple, and shortleaf pine. Wildlife includes deer, raccoons, coyotes, gray foxes, bobcats, and varieties of birds. Fishing is a popular recreational activity, and the park has a lighted fishing pier. Miller Cemetery is located within the park boundaries.

The Pittsburg Gazette

The first 125 years

L

et me introduce myself, I am a former editor/publisher with over 40 years experience at The Pittsburg Gazette. The newspaper was founded in 1884 by O. B. Colquitt, who later became governor of Texas. In 1887 my great-grandfather, F. A. Lockhart, a former Camp County judge, purchased The Gazette from Mr. Colquitt. My grandfather, Burt Lockhart, published the special 50th Anniversary edition of The Gazette in 1934. My wife, Jenny White, and I and eight employees published the 100th Anniversary edition in 1984. There have been 14 other newspapers in Camp County but only The Gazette has survived 125 years.

My grandfather worked for Mr. Colquitt as a teenager, just as I worked at publishing The Gazette when I was a teenager. He served 78 active years before dying as senior editor in 1962 at the age of 91. My dad, T. J. White, joined The Gazette family in 1931 as business and advertising manager, positions he held until his death in 1979. I joined my dad and grandfather in 1948 after receiving my journalism degree from The University of Texas. From that date, until I sold the newspaper in 1987, I served as editor. That was over 40 years, counting teenage years.

There were many changes in the printing business during my family’s 101 years of owning and editing The Pittsburg Gazette. In the early 1940s when I began, the newspaper was printed from lead type, by pressing paper against the inked lead. Advertizing type (the larger type) was hand set (one letter at a time) used and then re-distributed by hand back into type cases to be used again. The news was set on a Linotype machine which produced an individual line of type in lead. After printing from these pieces, the lead was melted into liquid, poured into a form and reused on the Linotype machine to produce the next newspaper.

As a teenager I melted the lead, lifted the heavy forms of lead off and on the press, fed the large ( four page size) sheets of paper on the press to print the newspaper, and helped repair the Linotype and presses.

Before my time, my grandfather had produced the newspaper with only hand set type Jenny and Dick White (no machinery help and one letter at a time). He had printed one sheet of the newspaper at a time by clamping down a hand press on the paper, after hand inking the lead type. He had also seen the paper printed by having a mule walk in circles to power the press, then gasoline power and finally electricity.

I was involved in the printing process changes that went from the use of hand set type, hot lead type to photographic typesetting and finally computerized typesetting. I was there for the change to offset printing, instead of letterpress printing. In the first offset printing methods you took a page-size picture of the pasted-up page, etched a metal plate that was wrapped and clamped around a cylinder on a high speed rotary press that used rolls of newsprint, instead of the old style four-page flat sheets of newsprint. This was a much faster process, but was also more expensive and required several newspapers using the same press to share the cost. Today those “central” plants not only print several newspapers, but also do the inserting of advertising circulars. And, the addressing of your newspaper is also done at the “central” plant instead of at The Gazette building. Computers can now size type to fit spaces, do page make up, handle digital pictures and many other jobs that once had to be done separately and by hand when I was the editor.

Not all the changes taking place in Pittsburg and Camp County during my 40 plus years occurred in the newspaper printing processes. I was writing about those changes as I covered the news of Camp County and the neighboring East Texas area.

From an agricultural base of sweet potatoes and watermelons the county moved to cattle, poultry, and peaches. Lakes were being built…

Lake of the Pines, Lake Bob Sandlin and Cypress Springs Lake. While serving over 20 years as the city of Pittsburg’s representative on the board of directors of the Northeast Texas Municipal Water District, The Gazette was instrumental in urging that the regional water rights be protected and finally distributed to the seven cities that taxed themselves to establish the district. I was president of the NETMWD when the regional water plant was constructed. There was the development of Lone Star Steel Co. and three electric generating plants in the area.

We reported the growth of Pilgrim Industries from a small local industry to a major industry in the state, the nation and internationally. The Gazette was represented as decisions were being made to consolidate and desegregate the schools. Many rural roads were paved because of Gazette editorials. And, there were always accidents and tragedies to be reported such as a Strategic Air Command bomber crashing as it refueled over Pittsburg. Voting precincts were changed and eliminated as better transportation allowed consolidations. New churches were built

along with new schools. And nationally, man walked on the moon and JFK was assassinated in Dallas.

The hospital has always been a major strength of our community and the construction of the new ETMC facility north of Pittsburg helps strengthen the future of Pittsburg. The Gazette was instrumental in coordinating the efforts of hundreds of volunteers to build the Pittsburg Camp County Library. We helped promote the creation of a new community college for the area. For The Gazette I traveled to Austin to see the high school track team win a State championship in 1965.

I also had the opportunity of reporting almost every play of PHS’s 1980 State championship football season, making the trip to College Station for the final game. I passed up many offers to sell The Gazette before I sold to Westward Communications in 1987. They were one of the companies created to purchase groups of small newspapers to publish at central plants where the larger and faster presses were located.

I treasure my journalistic experiences and miss the people contacts the most…that of being involved in all that’s going on in the community.

I even miss the entire city council, county commissioners’ court and school board meetings.

After retiring, I wrote a book for Pilgrim Industries commemorating their 50th anniversary. But that could never replace the thrill of publishing your own newspaper… especially with your dad and grandfather, who once gave me this advice, “Dick, in the newspaper business all you have to sell is your time and white space…and if you waste both of them you have nothing.”

The escapades at James Cavender’s

I FEEL SORRY FOR TODAY’S PITTSBURG TEENAGERS because they have no place to hang out in town and make memories like we baby boomers did that live, or did live, in Pittsburg during the 60s. The Dairy Hart was our Arnold’s where we spent our “Happy Days.” Chuck Johns worked at the Dairy Hart in the summer of 1964 and believed James Cavender built and opened a Dairy Mart in 1957. Very soon afterwards, the name was changed to Dairy Hart, most likely to avoid paying royalties to a franchise. Around 1965, James sold the Dairy Hart to Murray Froneberger. Murray was from Sulphur Springs and serviced cigarette and other vending machines there.

The Dairy Hart was located at 232 Rusk Street next door to the Piggly Wiggly which is now Bunn’s Flowers. My first memories of the Dairy Hart began when I was seven years old and in the second grade. Closed campuses did not exist at that time, and all students could walk home or to town to have lunch. The Pirates Den was jampacked full of high school boys and girls and was certainly no place for someone as young as me, so I walked to the Dairy Hart quite often with friends for lunch. A worn path led student after student past old men like Tom Smith and Happy Day pitching washers. Anyone who wanted to eat lunch had to get there early because empty seats were impossible to be found. Everyone piled in to purchase, as Sandy Bates Bankston said, “A hamburger, fries and drink for thirty-five cents!”

The Dairy Hart served as a place of employment for many of the young people. J. W. Hooper started with James on day one of the Dairy Hart’s existence. Chuck Johns and Jim Davis both worked for James.

“I liked to be there, and to get 50 cents an hour was just an added benefit. J. W. Hooper was my supervisor,” Chuck said.

Jim Davis shared a little history of his employment with James, also.

“James was well received, well liked, easy to get along with and loved by all the kids that became regular customers. I still remember the

first week I worked for the Dairy Hart. I started out by going door to door putting out fliers for the upcoming two-for-one ice cream sale that Saturday. When Saturday came, we were so busy that James and J.W. Hooper forgot that they had a new employee and never gave me a break to eat lunch. About six that evening, I asked James if I could take a break and eat something since I had not had anything to eat since early that morning. He was very upset with himself for forgetting about giving me a lunch break. In the four years that I worked, James never forgot again. On Saturdays, James liked to take off in the afternoon for two, sometimes three hours.

The morning cook left at two, and the night cook didn’t come in until five which usually left me or J.W. there to take care of the front and do the cooking as well. Most of the time this got really busy, and we needed James. All we had to do was pick up the pay phone and call, let the phone ring twice and hang up. I remember one Saturday afternoon it got really busy, and it was all I could do to keep up. When I got a call about 4 that afternoon for an order for 150 hamburgers to be ready for a 6:30 pickup, I called James, and for some reason instead of just coming on in, he called me back. All I said to him was ‘Help now!’

James immediately showed up! I never got out of the kitchen until it was time to shut it down that night,” Jim said.

“When I was in high school, kids would be inside and the parking lot was full. Many car radios were listening to radio station WNOE out of New Orleans. Some Friday nights we would call the station and they would give the Pirate score on the air.” ~ Chuck Johns

“When I was in high school kids would be inside and the parking lot was full. Many car radios were listening to radio station WNOE out of New Orleans. Some Friday nights we would call the station and they would give the Pirate score on the air,” Chuck said.

It was hilarious to watch the kids cramming themselves into all kinds of positions trying to get one or two more into the Beetle.”

Jim said all the kids liked, and James liked and trusted everyone. Jim commented that Mr. Collins, who owned the Piggly Wiggly next door, would always bring his vendors over for coffee. “If we were busy, Mr. Collins grabbed their cups and poured the coffee and served himself and them. Dale Collins loved his coffee!”

James was always willing to help kids. During football season, the Quarterback Club met at the Dairy Hart every Friday morning at 7 a.m. for coffee and doughnuts for their weekly meetings. James, J.W. or Jim Davis were always there and had plenty of coffee ready when the members starting showing up. James’ annual school ad featured junior football lettermen seated on bar stools for several years.

According to Chuck Johns in July 1964, President Johnson signed the Public

Accommodation Law. The Dairy Hart shut down for three days, offering window service only. Sales were down 70 percent and James said he had to reopen. Steve Yarborough remarked, “One night during those three days, Homer Jones was standing at the window at the Dairy Hart waiting on his order. We were in awe of him because Homer played for the New York Giants. Homer was going around shaking hands and greeting everyone. I, and so many of the other guys, was super impressed by his solid and large physique.”

So many memories of the Dairy Hart and James Cavender exist in the minds of Pittsburg residents and former residents. Sandy Marshall Cannaday said, “Our senior year, there were four or five of us who would eat there every day, and they would have our regular order ready for us. We always appreciated that! When we were being initiated as freshmen, part one was held at the Dairy Hart. We all looked ridiculous, and there were so many of us, but James allowed all of that to take place. He was always so tolerant of us in those teenage years!” Patti Ayers also remembers when freshman initiation was a big deal. “The freshman girls were always marched to the Dairy Hart by the senior girls! The march was timed, so the girls would arrive right when the entire football team was arriving at the Dairy Hart after their practice. This was very humbling for the freshman girls because the seniors had filled their hair with Jell-O, eggs, and everything else imaginable. It was a tradition!”

Even the drinks were special at the Dairy Hart. I can remember drinking my first cherry Coke there. Tommy Irby remembered going to the Dairy Hart every afternoon after football practice. “I always had a huge limeade to replenish the fluids lost during the practice. This was in the day that drinking water during practice was considered a sign of weakness. I wonder how we survived!” Dr. Jerry Cannaday said James sponsored a root beer drinking contest. James gave all participants a gallon of root beer and if you threw up, you were out of the contest! Just another fun memory!

The Dairy Hart was the teenage stomping ground, and as Steve Howell said, “It was the place you started every night.”

And Jackie Irby said, “It was a landmark on our drag through town, Main Street (Quitman/Jefferson) with a turnaround at the intersection near what is now the Prayer Tower and between the two railroad crossings.

Then we detoured to the Dairy Hart as we headed back east. We drove back down Main and repeated until time to go home.”

Sandy Cannaday went on to say, “The Dairy Hart was a wonderful gathering place. We always told our kids that was our “Happy Days” Drive In as in The Fonz and group! I think maybe the Dairy Hart was one of the constants that kept us all together! Everyone was welcome! We loved the Dairy Hart as a “going steady” couple and as individuals. James made the Dairy Hart everyone’s happy place! What a great memory...one of many to be had while growing up in Pittsburg!”

People have so many funny stories about the Dairy Hart. Brenda Duncan shared her story. “Like everyone else of my era, I spent hours hanging out at the Dairy Hart. I still like my Frito Pie made by adding chili directly to the bag of corn chips. I also remember when a pinball machine was installed. One afternoon, Mary Hooten Hardin and I decided to try it out. The dining room was lined with windows. When I got home, my mama met me at the door. “So, how was the pinball game?” Someone had driven by and had seen us at the machine. This person was so shocked at our unbecoming behavior, she felt compelled to call. Who knew that pinball was the first step on the slippery slope to moral decay? It takes a village, you know. Ah, the good old days.”

Romances also blossomed at the renowned Dairy Hart, and I love Brian Bullard’s definition. “The Dairy Hart was a place where the whole gamut of teenage hormones exploded. Romances began, thrived and ended with that as the set and it was the ground zero for the favorite teen pastime…riding around. Jerry French met Deana for the first time at the Dairy Hart. “She made me a cherry malt one day after football practice. That malt was great, and you know the rest of the story.”

My love affair with Pat Anders even began at the Dairy Hart. Nancy Taylor Bryant and I walked out of the Dairy Hart to go home, but my car was missing. We searched the world over and finally found the car parked behind the Dairy Hart.

Pat and Charles Nowlin were across the street in my daddy’s truck laughing at us.

Pat made a bet with Charles right then that he could get a date with me, and the rest is history.

Some of our best memories were made at the Dairy Hart. Most everyone agreed that this small place represented our Arnold’s. Jim Drennan said, “Growing up in a small town like Pittsburg has its own unique challenges when there is really

not much to offer in the way of places to go and things to do. When I think of the Dairy Hart, I remember it as one of the epicenters of interaction in Pittsburg where we met to eat a burger, drink a Coke, catch up on the latest news, spend time with our friends and sometimes just plain hang out with no apparent agenda in mind. We didn’t have internet, cell phones, tablets, Facebook, Twitter, video games and all the modern technology that exists today. We had no pizza place, mall or a movie theatre Patti Irby Ayer s and Ronnie Ba rret t after ours burned down.

The Dairy Hart played a huge part in the social and entertainment activities where we felt comfortable meeting, hanging out or simply leaving our cars while we cruised Pittsburg. We met there after school, before and after sporting events, before picking up our dates or after we dropped them off at home and simply when we had nothing else to do or any other place to go.”

I could write for days about happenings at the Dairy Hart. James Cavender, Murray Froneberger and that small, iconic building bring back such nostalgic, great memories of our youth. As Chuck Johns said, “In retrospect, it seemed like James ran the Dairy Hart for many years. It is now hard to believe he had it only eight years.” Those were our happy days, and I so miss the people cramming into the booths, the music from the juke box, and the smells of those delicious hamburgers and Dairy Hart enchiladas. What I wouldn’t give for a time machine just to go back there for a few hours and reminisce!”

n 1890, R.F. “Sam” Lockett and John F. Reynolds started a tradition in Pittsburg ... a drug store that would last for more than 100 years. Mr. Reynolds served as mayor of Pittsburg during Lockett and Reynolds’ many years in business.

The Lockett-Reynolds partnership was dissolved in 1934, and Roy B. Lockett took over the store. The name was then changed to Lockett’s Drug Store. Roy Lockett’s son Buster joined the business in 1936.

Buster sold his interest to Percy Williams and Zek Holmsley in 1951.

In 1960, Roy B. Lockett and partners sold their interest to Jessie and Gerald Palmore. With this new ownership the drug store became known as Palmore’s Drug Store. A year later they expanded the store to include the old Pittsburg National Bank building, which doubled the size of the drug store.

The Palmores sold the store to Gary and Jo Ann Foster in 1978. The name of the store was changed to Foster’s Palmore Drug and later Foster Drug & Bridal Registry. The store was completely remodeled, redecorated, and updated to better serve their customers.

The Fosters sold the business to Stephen and Robyn Parker in March 2004 and the store name changed to Parker Drug & Bridal Registry.

Southern Wind Manor T he Wallace family began plans to build an adult assisted living facility in Pittsburg in early January 2005 and a short time later, they opened the doors of a 42 private living suite community that features a spacious community dining room, private dining/multipurpose room, commercial grade kitchen facility, beauty and barber facility, private whirl-pool spa area, laundry facility, nurse/employee lounge, public lobby and restrooms, resident lounge areas, media and library nook, staff offices, activities area, and wellness center.

Looking to shoot a film?

Pittsburg is known for many things: peaches, hotlinks, Pilgrim’s Pride and others. But it could soon be known for something else…a hotbed for the film industry. The most recent film to be shot in Pittsburg is “Unwanted” a horror film that was shot at the historic Holman House on Texas Street, owned by Robert and Carla Peoples.

Thanks to Pittsburg becoming a Certified Film Friendly City by the Texas Film Commission on May 12 of last year, the city is able to attract more potential filmmakers to the area. The process took about eight months from start to finish and the city of Pittsburg continues to market itself for filming purposes and is, even now, adding prospective filming locations and other information to the Texas Film Commission online database. This database allows a prospective filmmaker to see what Pittsburg offers in terms of filming locations, amenities for crewmembers and the like.

“We look at this as being a great economic development opportunity for Pittsburg. While those crews are here filming those movies, commercials or whatever it may be, they’re going to spend money here and add to our tax base by shopping at local businesses, eating at our restaurants and things like that. As a matter of fact, we’ve added a $20,000 incentive into the new fiscal year budget to recruit and attract those filming opportunities. We’re one of the only cities in the State of Texas doing this incentive program, so we’re helping blaze a trail,” said Economic Development Coordinator Amanda Webster.

The storyline of “Unwanted” pulls from real life experiences that have occurred over the years in the Holman House as the film tells the story of Ryan and Shannon, a young couple looking to move out of the city and start a family in a more rural community. Their bliss was soon dashed with the realities of the house and its history.

On the day he was born there was trouble at the mill.

Lacy Davis was born in Upshur County, but resided most of his life in Camp County.

When I look at the large steam engine displayed at the Northeast Texas Rural Museum here in Pittsburg, I think back to my dad’s love of telling stories and collecting history.

T

here was actually trouble at his grandfather’s shingle mill near their home in Upshur County on the day my dad was born.

His father had to lie on his back and scoot under the running steam engine with belts whirling in order to reach the shut off. I have to admit that I pictured my grandfather’s heroic feat as I saw him in his later years with gray hair and a bit of a round middle. As an adult I realize that he was a 26-year-old hard working young man with a young family nearby. I found an article on the internet about a steam engine explosion on an Illinois farm on July 30, 1914, just five days after my dad was born. Those people were not so fortunate and lost two young men. Parts of the steam engine were found 200 feet away.

I realized my heritage included people who did what had to be done regardless of the cost.

Lacy moved to Camp County about 1920. His family lived on a farm just north of Pittsburg on what we call the old Mount Pleasant Highway. It was on that dusty road that he fell out of the wagon and his head was run over by the wheel. Luckily a combination of his hard head and a soft dusty road saved his life. It was also on that road he walked home from school one day to find that his family had moved.

A kind neighbor offered to take him to his new home, but all he could remember was that the house had a rose garden. One of the perks of living in a small, caring community is that the neighbor figured out where that was and delivered him home safe and sound. From that time forward Lacy was a “city” kid, and saw Pittsburg grow and change for about 86 more years.

Glimpses of those early years were shared in his stories. He started working at a young age as most children did at the time.

His father always made sure they had plenty to do. I’m sure growing up during the Great Depression made that as much a necessity as a way to build character. He helped in the garden and picked cotton. At one time he had a job at a local department store playing all the new records to increase sales. That was definitely right down his alley. He talked about walking home for lunch and hearing the entire “Light Crust Doughboys” performance coming from the neighboring houses as he walked. He even dug graves.

Once he was digging a grave in the city cemetery and unearthed Confederate buttons. After notifying the funeral director he was instructed to dig a small hole in the bottom of the new grave and place the buttons and any bone fragments in it. So, at least one grave at Rose Hill is the last resting place of two individuals.

I don’t know what all of his dreams and ambitions were, but I know he felt a great loss in not being able to use the scholarship to college that he earned as “High Ranking Boy” in his senior class of 1932. About the time he graduated his father lost his job at a local store due to the depression. With two younger siblings at home his family needed another bread winner and had no funds to pay room and board at college. So he did what he needed to do, rather than what he wanted to do. It didn’t take long for him to decide that his grocery store job was not a long term life choice, and he sent off for a correspondence course in radio technology. This set the stage for a lifetime interest in electronics and technology.

It also decided the course of his training when World War II called. He ended up learning the brand new technology of sound ranging to determine enemy gun locations.

Having a radio shop in the back of Hub Taylor’s drug store didn’t provide the income stability he wanted in his life. He was able to get a substitute carrier job with the United States Postal Service just a short time before he was drafted for WWII, and that ensured a job on his safe return. Lacy was able to retire at 59 years old with 32 years of service. So, he and my mother, Jane, set to work doing the things they loved. They both loved history, and spent many hours scouring church and county records for information. Lacy decided to gather history on the First United Methodist Church to continue the records that already existed. There weren’t many questions about the churches’ history that he couldn’t answer. I just wish I had asked him about the little pump organ! They joined local historical societies and were appointed to the Camp County Historical Commission.

Many teachers never realize what an impact they have on their

students, but my dad never forgot the story told by Mrs. Nina Berry of the Ezekiel Airship. He talked about it throughout my lifetime.

So when a hearing aid rep called on the drugstore where I worked in 1974 and asked if anyone had ever heard of Burrell Cannon, I had the affirmative answer. I called my dad to come meet her and the Cannon family connection was made with the local historian.

Scooter Harbor was the pharmacist at the time, later became a founding member of the Pittsburg Optimist Club, and then one of the crew that decided to build the replica of the Airship. It took a lot of research on everyone’s part. Interviews were conducted, letters were written, news articles were gathered and patents were searched. My dad was planning a trip to Oklahoma to interview the last surviving eyewitness, when her son called to say she decided she was too old and unsure to make a statement. That spark to tell the story of Burrell Cannon and the Ezekiel Airship came just a few years too late for firsthand accounts of the flight, but there was plenty of other evidence to collect.

So, Pittsburg has a treasure to share. Actually, Pittsburg has many treasures to share. Native sons and daughters both made and preserved history. Artifacts are very interesting, but the stories they tell make them relevant and exciting. Lacy Davis may not have accomplished all he dreamed of, but he traveled through many times and places among the pages of books and magazines. And he left a legacy of community service and historic preservation for future generations.

The board feels it is important to emphasize that no tax dollars were used in the construction. Except a federal and state grant of $50,000. On the day of the library dedication in 1974, Mrs. White presented the library keys to the city and county officials and declared the library debt free.

Current Library Statistics Lily Marshall, the present library director, said after so many years, Camp County is still reaping the rewards of its endeavors, and the approximate 11,000 citizens it serves are proud of the library. The Genealogy Department was added through the efforts of volunteer Fay McMinn in 1981 and now contains 2,000 volumes, 618 Texas volumes alone.

Support for the library continues through local governments, volunteers, Friends of the Library, local service clubs, and the community. The library’s board of directors is a very involved, supportive group and welcomes suggestions that could benefit the citizens.

The library staff consists of three full-time employees and six active volunteers. The collection contains 32,000 books, 837 audio books, 336 cassettes and compact disks, 1,100 videos, and 60 periodical subscriptions. Currently the library circulates approximately 58,000 items per year.

ETMC Pittsburg offers high quality care close to home

Residents of Camp County and surrounding areas have convenient access to high quality healthcare close to home at ETMC Pittsburg.

ounded in 1940 as Pittsburg Medical and Surgical Hospital by a group of local physicians, the hospital has faithfully served the community. Since 1983, East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System has leased the facility and has worked to continue the dedication and care first demonstrated by the founders. In 2009, a new hospital facility was constructed on U.S. Highway 271, about a mile north of Pittsburg.

Paramount to the success of any hospital is its staff, and at the core of any hospital staff is its physicians. The ETMC First Physicians clinic in Pittsburg, located inside the hospital, boasts 14 providers specializing in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, gynecology and gastroenterology. Biography

P

rior to the incorporation of Pilgrim’s Pride, Mr. Pilgrim was a partner in its predecessor partnership business founded in 1946, when Mr. Pilgrim’s older brother, Aubrey, started a small feed store called Farmer’s Feed and Seed Co. in the rural East Texas town of Pittsburg. The brothers began giving away 100 baby chicks with each sack of feed purchased by local farmers, who later brought back the grown chickens to sell. As the demand for the chickens grew, the first steps were taken toward creating the vertically integrated poultry company known as Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation. Under Bo’s leadership, Pilgrim’s Pride grew to become the world’s leading chicken company in terms of production.

Bo Pilgrim’s life work extends far beyond the company he helped to create.

He is a former director and chairman of the National Chicken Council in Washington, D.C. As a past leader in the Midwest Feed Manufacturers Association, the Texas Water Resources Board, and the Governor’s Task Force for Agriculture, he has been an ardent spokesman for the agricultural industry.

Lonnie “Bo” Pilgrim was a co-founder of Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation (NYSE: PPC).

Mr. Pilgrim is also a former member of the Dallas Baptist University Board of Trustees.

Mr. Pilgrim currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of Pilgrim Bank where he is the majority owner. Pilgrim Bank has 16 locations ranging from Pittsburg in East Texas through the 287 Corridor including Wichita Falls and Clarendon, deep in the Texas Panhandle. The bank has grown from a single location to a multibank organization with assets of approx $600 million. Priefert: A Legacy of Innovation

F

ew families have influenced the livestock handling industry as significantly as the Priefert family from Mount Pleasant, TX. For half a century, the Prieferts have been designing, building, and marketing cattle handling equipment, and, in the process, changing the way the American rancher handles cattle. Marvin Priefert founded Priefert Manufacturing in 1964 with the invention of the first fully front-opening headgate. Little did he know, this first piece of ranch equipment would later become the foundation for one of the largest farm, ranch and rodeo equipment manufacturers in the world.

A farmer and inventor by trade, Marvin Priefert shocked everyone who knew him when he bought a ranch and moved his family to the small east Texas town of Mt. Pleasant. To gain experience handling livestock, Marvin and his son Bill helped a neighbor work his herd. Seeing the inefficiencies in his neighbor’s guillotine-style steel headgate, Marvin decided to invent a headgate of his own. According to Bill, who was 14 at the time, Marvin’s idea was that a headgate should close around both sides of the animal’s neck, then “fall completely open, be wide as a barn door, and let that cow walk out right through the front,” enticing the next animal to walk in behind her. Marvin built a prototype of his headgate, and confident in the design, built a second one for his neighbor. Thus, Priefert Manufacturing was born, with Marvin and Bill as its first two employees.

As Priefert grew, Marvin began to expand his product line. He was constantly reevaluating his designs to make improvements for efficiency and ease of use. In 1981, he was the first in the industry to make the move to contoured sides on his squeeze chute to better fit the shape of cattle. In 1984, Marvin introduced another revolutionary advancement in the livestock industry: a panel featuring a chain connection with a “fishhook” top and J-leg frame. The chain connection was Marvin’s solution to many of the problems created by the traditional pin connection. This “Premier Panel” was the first panel to effectively bridge the gap between cattle and horse panels, by offering a single panel that was tough enough for cattle, yet safe enough for horses.

In 1988, Priefert was the first manufacturer to release an open-sided cattle sweep system. That same year, Priefert was also the first to release a double pivot calf table, a design Bill created based on the principles of leverage he had learned in his high school wrestling class. Sadly, amidst all the success and growth, 1988 also dealt 42 • IN & AROUND PITTSBURG January 2017

a devastating blow to the Priefert family when Marvin passed away unexpectedly as a result of surgical complications. Following the loss of his dad, Bill stepped up and took the reins to help guide Priefert Manufacturing forward and to carry on his father’s legacy.

The 90s were a period of rapid growth as the product line expanded to include horse equipment, feeders, poultry equipment, and roping chutes. In 1991, Bill developed one of the most important improvements in the company’s history: the Infinite Locking System. The new infinite lock was tested 250,000 times and showed no measurable wear; that would be the equivalent of a ranch working 325 head of cattle three times a year for 250 years. These locks are guaranteed for life and are still used on Priefert headgates and squeeze chutes. Priefert marked another industry first in 1994 when they made the shift from traditional paint to offer a full line of powdercoated equipment.

Throughout the 90s, each of Bill’s sons finished their college degrees and began working full time for Priefert Manufacturing. As the company entered the 21st century, Bill and his boys continued to innovate, placing their focus on the popular rodeo market. Working with top engineers and consulting with professional bull riders, Priefert developed Bucking Chute and a line of Rough Stock panels. The PBR quickly took notice and named Priefert its Official Equipment Provider. The new chutes debuted at the 2005 PBR World Finals in Las Vegas. Within a year, Priefert was also named the Official Equipment Company of the PRCA, and began providing the arena and holding pens for the National Finals Rodeo in 2006.

While the years have brought many changes for the Priefert family and their business, some things have remained the same. Marvin’s son Bill and his grandsons Eddie, Nate, and Travis continue to carry on the tradition he began. Bill has experienced the progression of the family business from a one room, dirt floor shop in the backyard, to one of the largest farm, ranch, and rodeo equipment manufacturers in the world. The Priefert family is proud to produce a quality product that is made in the USA. Motivated by the pride of ownership and the challenge of finding a better way, they have built a business focused on meeting the needs of the American farmer and rancher. Pilgrim Bank A Mainstay in our Community since 1911

P

ilgrim Bank’s 105 year legacy began in downtown Pittsburg, Texas, three years before World War I began. With $35,000 in capital stock, the bank was born from the dreams of a small group of investors. The charter in Camp County in 1911 made its first expansion with the purchase of First National Bank in the neighboring community of Newsome. Surviving World War I, the stock market crash and The Great Depression, the bank stood strong as a cornerstone in the community with assets of $1.3 million in December 1939.

The country again faced great trials, beginning in December of 1941 as we were drawn into World War II. Downtown Pittsburg remained the home of this small community bank as many men and women served their country during World War II. As many men went to war, America’s women took up the slack to keep the country running.

When the GI’s returned there were jobs for them in their hometowns. When Edward Russell returned to Pittsburg he went to work alongside his wife Dorothy who served as a teller. He was known to affectionately refer to her as “Momma,” even calling it out across the lobby. Edward’s career spanned over 40 years until he retired, and still stands as the bank’s longest- tenured officer.The war ended in 1945 and a small egg and poultry business, Pilgrim’s Pride, in neighboring Pine, Texas, began to grow... In 1969, Lonnie “Bo” Pilgrim purchased the bank, becoming Chairman of the Board. As Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation and northeast Texas communities grew, so did the bank. The first 24- Hour Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) in Camp County was installed at the newly remodeled bank downtown, boasting five motor bank lanes, one commercial lane and a walk-up window in the motor bank lobby. By 1984, assets had exceeded $41 million.

A milestone for the bank was reached in June 1997, when Pilgrim Bank built and opened its first branch located in neighboring Mt. Pleasant, Texas. A legacy 3 story building was completed in 1998 in Mt. Pleasant, becoming the corporate headquarters. In 2007, the board of directors of NETEX Bancorporation, signed a definitive agreement to acquire Community Bank, with one Northeast Texas location in Sulphur Springs and two locations in the Texas Panhandle towns of Wellington and Clarendon, ending the year with assets of $215 million. Pilgrim Bank continued to grow with the acquisition of 9 additional banking centers in North Central Texas. The agreement for acquiring State National Bank of Texas was signed on January 7, 2015 by Bo Pilgrim and Ken Pilgrim.

Homer Jones

Pittsburg native and a legend in his own right

Y

ou may not know the name Homer Carroll Jones, but he is an NFL legend in his own right, most notably for inventing the “spike” and being the fi rst player ever to return a kickoff for a touchdown on Monday Night Football.

Jones is still one of the most recognized and valued players in the New York Giants franchise and was a feared scoring threat in the 60s. In high school, Mr. Jones ran a blinding 9.3 second 100-yard dash and ran the 200-yard dash in 19.9 seconds; he also ran for the United States track team.

Homer played college ball at Texas Southern University where he was one of the fastest athletes on the team, and in Texas Southern University history. Jones was drafted fi rst by the Houston Oilers, but was later cut for failing a physical due to a knee injury. He was later picked up by the Giants and the rest was history. Homer was given the number 45, which was previously worn by hall of famer Emlen Tunnell.

Jones’ 66.4 yards per game is still a record for the Giants and his 4,845 total receiving yards and 35 touchdowns are fi fth in Giants history. He was selected as the Giants most valuable player in 1967 for his 49 catches for 1,209 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 86.4 yards per game performance. The honor entitled Jones to a brand new Cadillac as well. Homer finished his career with the Cleveland Browns in 1970.

Though it may come as a surprise, Jones didn’t play sports as a child and only got into football when he saw his idol, Jim Brown wreaking havoc on defenses.

“He was performing and doing his best and at that time it was a scary thing; he was good,” said Jones. Even still, he only played a year of high school football, but he was a lightning bolt. Jones said another Pittsburg resident persuaded him to come to Texas Southern for college and it was something he had to adjust to. “I only played one year of high school ball and college was a bit more advanced so I had to get used to it, but I just kept at it. My greatest accomplishment in college was beating Grambling.”

Homer said his overall greatest accomplishment though was beating the Dallas Cowboys as a New York Giant.

Ever the humble man, Homer wouldn’t dare laud his invention of the “spike.”

Having seen players such as Giant teammate Frank Gifford and Green Bay Packers star Paul Hornung celebrate touchdowns by throwing the ball to fans in the stands, Jones decided to come up with his own post-touchdown maneuver. In a 1965 game, he scored a touchdown and threw the football down hard into the end zone. He called the move a “spike”, and modern post-touchdown celebrations, including “touchdown dances”, are said to have evolved from Jones’ invention of spiking the ball.

In January 1970, Jones was traded to the Browns in exchange for running back Ron Johnson and veteran defensive lineman Jim Kanicki. The Browns were in the market for a new wide receiver after having traded all-pro Paul Warfield to the Miami Dolphins.

In the team’s fi rst game of the 1970 NFL season on Sept. 21, 1970 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Jones returned the second-half kickoff against the New York Jets for a touchdown, a key play in the Browns’ 31-21 win over the Jets in front of 85,703 fans. The crowd, officially the largest crowd in Browns’ history, was a part of NFL history that evening in the fi rst game ever played on ABC’s Monday Night Football.

However, that touchdown would be the highlight of his one season with the Browns as knee injuries soon caught up with Jones.

Soon after being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in July 1971, he was forced to retire at age 29.
