From the desk of the Publisher IHSFAN Magazine is proud to celebrate our 7th issue in 2021. IHSFAN started with one goal - We wanted to shine the spotlight on AUSTIN-AREA High School Football. We are fans first and foremost. In fact, the name IHSFAN actually is derived from I AM A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FAN. Looking back on the past 6 issues of the magazine we have proudly showcased HUNDREDS of area players and coaches. In 2017 IHSFAN partnered with Austin’s #1 Sports radio station “The Horn” to bring the “Under the Lights” radio show to the Austin airwaves. Each Wednesday night during the season from 7:00-9:00 p.m. both Jeff Power and myself bring our listeners an action-packed show that includes conversations with area coaches and players, news of the week from around the area, and our highly popular prediction segment. We are excited to announce that we will be back on The Horn for season number FIVE this August. As we continue to bring content to our readers and listeners, we are proud to announce the success of our IHSFAN WEBCAST Network. Last year was the second season for our Webcast Network. As a result of the revised UIL Friday Night Video policy we added VIDEO to our broadcasts in 2020. 2020 will be remembered as the year that changed the world. We were honored to be able to bring the game to folks that either could not make it OR were not allowed to attend the games. We are excited to broadcast games in 2021 and like the previous two seasons ALL the games will be accessible via both a complimentary web link AND will be available on THE HORN APP. Imagine sitting at your local stadium watching your favorite team and then being able to click on the Horn app to listen to (and hopefully watch) live play by play of several different games. The 2021 Bush’s Chicken IHSFAN Top 10 team once again features players from all over the area. It has been fun to look back at our Top 10 teams from the previous 6 magazines to see how they are doing. Our first ever IHSFAN Top 10 team has now graduated college and is off pursuing great things. On a personal note, I would like to thank ALL the area coaches for all that they do. Through their leadership we were able to have an interesting and great football season in 2020. Our community is blessed with so many great men and women that do so much for our area student athletes. The world has struggled as a result of the pandemic. It is our hope that high school football will play a key role in helping heal all of us. One thing is for sure, we will never take any sporting event for granted ever again. I can’t wait to see the bands, dance teams, student sections, and communities back in the stands this August! Welcome to the 2021 IHSFAN MAGAZINE!

PANDEMIC KNOWLEDGE By Dr. Scott A. Smith Texas Orthopedics

I’m writing this in March 2021for publication in the Fall of 2021. Some of you may know that I had a very severe coronavirus infection and today is the anniversary of my own hospitalization. That was a tough month that I’m still dealing with but what I learned is that life is a gift. Appreciate every day as you never know when that may end. I learned that I should have been eating the CHOCOLATE donut. My entire life I didn’t eat the donut and it almost didn’t matter in regards to my mortality. Take advantage of as many opportunities as you can because they may not come around again. I learned that friends matter. Family matters! Teammates matter. I could not have survived this without the unwavering support of my family and friends. Sorry for putting y’all through that by the way. Call, text, video all your friends, yes even the long lost ones from HIGH SCHOOL. It matters and will enrich your life. I learned that there are a bunch of HEROES in this world that don’t often get recognized. Healthcare workers such as nurses, paramedics, techs, assistants, and doctors lay it on the line everyday for our benefit. So do teachers, policemen, fireman, grocery store workers, truck drivers, cooks, waitresses and a lot of other jobs. Our day to day life depends on everyone doing their part. Hopefully we are back to some semblance of normalcy now.

I also learned that I really missed sports and specifically attending sports. I did think it was awesome to have a NBA game, PGA tournament, NFL and college football on at the same time. The MASTERS in November!! I’ll be glad when we return back to a more normal schedule however. Looking forward to seeing everyone at games and maybe even sitting together possibly shaking hands or highfiving. Hopefully as you read this it’s at a full high school stadium with the entire band present with their entire halftime performance. I missed the cheese nachos and Diet Dr Pepper at band booster club concession stands too. I am somewhat sad when I think of all the suffering and changes that were made as a result of this virus. Missed opportunities and lost time with family and friends. We can’t change that but we can move forward and live the remainder of our lives with the understanding that life is a gift. Live it well. I hope you and your family made it through this pandemic and have come out with some wisdom, some new skills and some understanding about what really matters. US/ ALL of US / TOGETHER. SO tomorrow morning instead of just a cup of coffee, add a chocolate donut and think about how AWESOME it tastes.

The 2021 IHSFAN Top 10 Team represents our view of the best high school talent in the Austin area for the coming football season. Each player detailed below is someone to keep your eye on as the Friday night lights are switched on later this year.

Luke Hutchison, McNeil, Senior QB,

The definition of a dual threat quarterback, McNeil’s Luke Hutchison has earned a spot on IHSFAN’s Top Ten Team heading into 2021. As the Mavericks’ unquestioned leader, Hutchison had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders in 2020. Hutchison had already totaled 253 rushing yards in two games before an ankle injury ultimately derailed his season. “With us being a younger team, the coaches viewed me as a leader,” Hutchison told IHSFAN. “Once I got hurt, I knew I had to stay involved… it was good for me mentally.” From the sidelines, Hutchison continued working with the new coaching staff and learning an offense he hopes will turn

Two years ago, Hutchison threw for 1,036 yards and ran for 667 yards and 9 touchdowns. Once he’s back on the field, McNeil will go as far as he can take them.

Darson Herman, Georgetown, Senior QB,

There weren’t many quarterbacks in the state of Texas who were harder to stop than Darson Herman last season. As a junior, he completed 61% of his passes, racking up 3,074 yards through the air and 27 passing touchdowns. He was also extremely effective as a runner, totaling 1,297 yards on the ground and scoring 20 rushing touchdowns. “I think my running ability makes our offense dangerous… it makes it that much harder for opponents’ game plans,” Herman told IHSFAN. “I have complete trust in all of my coaches.” In his senior season, Herman hopes to further improve upon his decision making and pre-snap ability. “I want to be able to make the right reads and audibles to put us in a position to have success,” Herman told IHSFAN. Watch out for Herman and his Georgetown Eagles, who will be looking to build upon last year’s solid showing. 16

Jake Chambers, Stony Point, Senior LB

Few players in high school football represent their team quite like honorable mention all-state linebacker Jake Chambers embodies the Stony Point Tigers. Whether he’s wreaking havoc in the backfield or blanketing opponents in coverage, you can’t miss #44 flying around the field. Chambers averaged nearly 14 tackles per game last season while serving as the vocal leader of the Tigers’ defense. “I enjoy setting my teammates up and putting them in the right position,” Chambers told IHSFAN. He says this applies both on the field and in the weight room. The Tigers had a turbulent 2020 season that included COVID-related interruptions and cancellations. “It wasn’t a very consistent year at all,” Chambers told IHSFAN. “I’m proud of how our team dealt with adversity.” In a district that just lost an elite group of quarterbacks to graduation, Chambers and the Tigers’ defense should thrive in 2021.

Mason Shorb, Rouse, Junior QB

Mason Shorb’s breakthrough season helped lift the Rouse Raiders to new heights in 2020. The district newcomer of the year threw for 3,100 yards and 39 touchdowns while completing 65% of his passes. Although he was just a sophomore, Shorb showed poise and consistency in the moments when his team needed him the most. Rouse was 3-0 in games decided by one score, which ultimately helped them capture the District 13-5A title and win two golden balls in the playoffs. It was quite the turnaround from a 1-9 record in 2019. Shorb remembers standing on the sidelines two years ago and learning through the adversity. “We knew we didn’t want to fall that far again as a team,” Shorb told IHSFAN. “Everyone came back hungry.” As a gifted pocket passer, Shorb prides himself on making the right reads and going through his progressions. As he prepares for his junior season, he hopes to improve as a leader and set his team up for another playoff run.

Sedrick Alxander, LBJ, Junior RB

Strengthening with every game, LBJ running back Sedrick Alexander burst onto the scene during his sophomore season. In the first few games he was used sparingly as he waited his turn behind upperclassmen. But over the course of the year, it became apparent that he was a star. He eventually became a key cog in the offense, toting the rock 111 times for 1,083 yards and 14 touchdowns. He averaged nearly 10 yards per carry. With two more years of high school football ahead, it’s easy to get excited about Alexander’s potential. “By starting off early, I set a standard for myself,” Alexander told IHSFAN. He was able to reach that standard over the course of the season, forging a bond with coach Jahmal Fenner in the process. “He’s like family to me,” Alexander said of Coach Fenner. “He’s always there for me…He picks me up whenever I need.”

Tavian Cord, Weiss, Senior ATH

Save for kicking field goals, there isn’t much that 2nd team all-state player Tavian Cord hasn’t done to help the Weiss Wolves win football games. As he enters what will be his fourth year as a varsity starter, Cord told IHSFAN he’s proud of his improvement on the mental side of the game. “Sometimes it’s about taking what’s given and not being greedy,” Cord told IHSFAN. “I’ve been able to know my team both ways, stay in shape and produce.” Offensively, Cord amassed 1,109 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Most of this production came on the ground, but Cord’s talent has translated to both the QB and WR positions during his high school career. Somehow, this only tells half of the story - he also excels as a defensive back. Cord most notably forced the game-winning fumble in an emotional win over Manor. He called this his personal highlight of 2020. “I still haven’t chosen if I’ll stick to playing receiver or switch to defense,” Cord told IHSFAN. “But defense is more fun.” For now, Cord will continue to excel both ways.

Elijah Oakmon, Pflugerville, Senior RB

Pflugerville’s Elijah Oakmon is the only repeat member of the IHSFAN Top Ten Team. Last year, he racked up over 1,000 yards from scrimmage and scored a career-high 12 touchdowns. In all three of his varsity seasons, Oakmon has consistently averaged around 95 rushing yards per game. Yet on any given night, he can completely take over. Against Weiss, he essentially carried the Panthers to victory by erupting for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns. Oakmon told IHSFAN that he takes pride in his work ethic. With experience, he has improved his game both mentally and physically. “Putting a lot of work into things like blocking made me a better player and put me where I am,” Oakmon told IHSFAN. “I became more vocal because we had a lot of young up-and-coming players.” One of those up-and-comers includes his backfield mate, Jr. Jake Iloka. The pair complement and challenge one another nicely and will be a handful for any defense that stands in their way this season.

Cade Klubnik, Westlake, Senior QB

It will be hard for any quarterback to replicate the kind of season that Westlake’s Cade Klubnik put together in 2020. As a junior, he led the Chaparrals to a perfect 14-0 record and won the state championship game. He also caught the eye of several of the top programs in college football, deciding on Clemson as his future destination. Klubnik threw for 3,495 yards and ran for another 583 over the course of the season. While he’s always capable of making the ‘home run’ play, Klubnik was poised, patient and efficient in each game. He completed 67% of his passes, accounting for 50 touchdowns compared to just 3 turnovers. Even on nights when the numbers weren’t flashy, Klubnik made the right decisions to help his team win. In a Westlake program that boasts alumni Drew Brees, Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger, Klubnik has already cemented himself as one of the best quarterbacks in school history. Westlake fans can’t help but feel excited for what the final chapter of his high school career will have in store.

Bo Edmundson Lake Travis Junior QB

The next in a longstanding tradition of great Lake Travis quarterbacks, Bo Edmundson got his turn a bit sooner than expected after Nate Yarnell suffered an injury last season. The young signal-caller prides himself on getting rid of the ball quickly and trusting his reads. “If I don’t get it right, I go to the next down and re-set,” Edmundson told IHSFAN. “I try not to hold the ball much or ever be timid.” Bo’s skillset is already drawing attention from Power 5 schools after it translated to eye-popping stats in just five games last year. He completed a sparkling 68% of his passes, tallying 1,409 yards and 17 touchdowns compared to just 2 interceptions. The 2020 Cavaliers didn’t enjoy their typical playoff success after enduring a COVID-related pause at the end of the season. While disappointing, it was an experience that Edmundson said brought him closer to his teammates. With Edmundson’s help, Lake Travis will be as dangerous as ever this season.

Caleb Burton, transferred to Lake Travis Senior WR “Smooth” might be the best way to describe the multifaceted game of star wideout Caleb Burton. The Ohio State commit told IHSFAN that he prides himself on his deceptive speed and quickness. “I think I’m really quick coming out of my breaks,” Burton told IHSFAN. “I don’t look too fast – until you’re going up against me.”

Burton recently completed a 4-month recovery from a meniscus tear he suffered in a week 1 win over McNeil. “It was my first injury that’s ever taken away a full season,” Burton told IHSFAN. Now that he’s back to full strength, he’ll try and build off of a sophomore season in which he caught 50 passes for 906 yards and 12 touchdowns. Most importantly, though, Burton says he wants to lead his team to playoff success.

In 2020, the LBJ Jaguars had their deepest playoff run in their 47 year history. In just his third season at the helm of Jag Nation, Coach Fenner led his team to a 9-3 record, reaching the 5th round of the playoffs, just one game from the State championship.

In 2020, Ryder led the Timberwolves to a 13-1 record and an appearance in the State championship game.

Coach Fenner and his staff often found themselves looking across the field to an opponent with twice as many suited up players.

Ryder’s final stats include 283 completions for 4,265 yards and an astonishing 58 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. His performance ranked among the top 5 performances in the nation for his position.

WESTWOOD Coach Anthony Wood is entering his 17th season as THE CHIEF of Warrior Nation. Coach Wood, who arguably gets more out of his players than any area coach, may need some extra magic in 2021 as graduation emptied a TON of talent from his Warrior cupboard. The Warriors finished with the record of 3-6 last season. Coach Wood told IHSFAN,” This team will have an opportunity to surprise many people. They have the work ethic, desire, and belief they can achieve anything. I am looking forward to watching this very young group of players grow into a football team.” The Warriors will return 5 starters on offense and 4 on defense. The Offense will be led by 2nd AD OL Tate Bookins, Jr. WR Grant Jaeger, Sr. WR Zach Pryor, 2nd AD Sr. K Matthew Jack, and Sr. WR Jaiden Webber. The Defense will be led by 2nd AD Jr. DL Jack Ziebell, Sr. LB Brian Lee, Sr. DB Darion Barnes, and Jr. LB Brennen Dill

MCNEIL

By Jake Herman Coach Scott Hermes enters his 2nd year as the head coach at McNeil. Last year, the winless Mavericks experienced their fair share of growing pains that came with the coaching change in the midst of the pandemic. “Our guys learned a ton last year, and they took some licks doing it,” Coach Hermes told IHSFAN. “They’re excited, they’re eager, and they know what to work on.” The Mavericks return 8 starters on an offense that will be led by IHSFAN Top Ten Team Sr. QB Luke Hutchison, who missed the bulk of last season with an ankle injury. He’ll be surrounded by a core of young but experienced players on the offensive line and in the skill positions. Jr. 2nd team all-district RB Kaleb Cooper will look to build on a strong sophomore season running behind an offensive line that includes Sr. 2nd team all-district OT Amarea Lee. At wide receiver, Jr. Jarvis Anderson provides a deep threat while Sr. Mark Henke and Jr. Joseph Patterson will look to develop into reliable third-down targets. The versatile Jr. Brad Whittenburg will do a little bit of everything in OC Patrick Bailey’s offense as well. Defensively, the Mavericks return just 4 starters have a lot of all-district talent to replace. Coach Hermes brings defensive expertise from past experience at Vandegrift and hopes to use the offseason to help this unit grow physically and schematically. Look for the Mavericks to be a much tougher squad this season.

CEDAR RIDGE Coach Sam Robinson enters his 5th season at the helm of the Cedar Ridge Raiders coming off their 8th straight trip to the playoffs, finishing 2020 with the record of 6-4. The Raiders season came to an end in the 1st round of the playoffs against eventual state champion Westlake. Coach Robinson told IHSFAN, “This season we should be really physical and fast on defense. Our offensive line will also be big and physical and that, combined with the type of Running Backs we have, should allow us to control the ball and win some games.” The 2021 Raiders will return 4 starters on offense and 3 on defense. The offense will be led by1st AD Sr. TE Matthew Brooks, 1st AD Sr. OL Jacob White, Sr. WR Victor Taylor, and Jr. OL Joshua Wollard. The defense will be led by 2nd AD Sr. DL Dave Nwaneri, 2nd AD Sr. DB Jackson Donohoe, and Sr. DT Dominic Bolden. As always expect the Raiders to compete for the district title.

VISTA RIDGE Coach Rodney Vincent heads into his 13th season as head coach of the Rangers coming off another great season where they finished 7-3 and lost to Hays in Round 1 of the playoffs. Coach Vincent told IHSFAN,” We will continue to invest and build into our players family, character, toughness, and relentless effort. Every year we have a brand-new team, and we want to be the best version of ourselves we can be for 2021.” The Rangers will return 4 on offense and 6 on defense. The Rangers lost the dynamic multi-year starter Kyle Brown to graduation so it will be time to reload their explosive offense. The offense will be led by Jr. RB Alex Berndlmaier, Sr. WR Wyatt Gates, Jr. WR Reece Heffelfinger, So. WR Tanner Brosie, So. WR Tian Murray, and Jr. QB Jack Podolak. The defense will be led by 1st AD Sr. DB Jonathan Clark, Sr. DB Axel Allen, Sr. DL Ethan Ellsworth, and Sr. DL Tre’ Johnson. Look for the Rangers to compete for a playoff spot in this brutally tough 25-6A district.

HUTTO Coach Brad LaPlante heads into his 4th season at the helm of Hippo Nation coming off the record of 4-5 in 2020. Coach LaPlante told IHSFAN, “Our veteran and young players have had a tremendous off-season to prepare for our 2nd year of 6A football. Their intensity, work ethic, and desire have been second to none. This will be a fun group to watch and coach in 2021.” The 2021 squad will return 5 on offense and 7 on defense. VANDEGRIFT Coach Drew Sanders heads into his 13th season as the Vipers head coach. The Vipers are coming off their 3rd straight district championship as they we co-champs with Round Rock. The Vipers finished the season with the record of 10-3 and made their deepest 6A playoff run as they went 4 Rounds ultimately losing to Hays 38-10. Coach Sanders told IHSFAN, “We return solid experience on both sides of the ball and have talented underclassmen who are ready to help reload for our run to a 4th straight district championship and continue to improve on our three-year district record of 24-1.” The Vipers will return 6 on offense and 6 on defense. The offense will be led by 1st AD Sr. RB Ryan Sheppard, Sr. QB/WR Reece Beauchamp (coming over from his 2nd AD DB performance), and Sr. WR. Graylon Spring. ROUND ROCK Coach Jeff Cheatham, now in his 12th season as Round Rock Dragon head coach, oversees the largest school enrollment in central Texas. 2020 was a great year for the Dragons as they finished with the record of 8-3 and were co-champs of the very tough district 25-6A. Coach Cheatham told IHSFAN, “We hope to use the momentum from last season during the offseason to keep the bar high. We will have to reestablish a quarterback and we will have some really good offensive line depth.” The Dragons will return 3 on offense and 6 on defense. The offense will be led by Sr. RB Trayvian McCoy-Gay (who had a breakout season in ’20), Sr. OL Arian Gilmore, and Jr. WR Adam Borrel. The defense will be the strength of the Dragons as they will be led by1st AD Sr. LB Carter Wagner, 2nd AD Sr. DL Trayvian Brown, 2nd AD Sr. LB Jack Duncan, and Jr. DL Jett Jones.

STONY POINT 2021 will mark the 18th season at the helm of Stony Point football (38 overall coaching years) for Coach Craig Chessher. The Tigers had a covidshortened 2020 season that saw them finish with the record of 2-4. Coach Chessher told IHSFAN, “We will be better this season but not sure by how much. Our opponents are tough and we lost our starting QB to Del Valle.” The tigers will return 6 on offense and 7 on defense. The offense will be led by 1st AD Jr. RB Cameron Cook, 2nd AD Sr. WR Lukas Morin, and Sr. WR/RB Jaden Leonard. The defense will be led by 1st AD and IHSFAN Top 10 player Sr. LB Jake Chambers who is among the best LB’s in the State. Other leaders include 2nd AD Sr DL Adam Whitfield, and Sr. LB Jacob Morales. Last season was very tough on the squad due to a few cancellations. Look for the Tigers to come out in 2021 looking to make a splash in 25-6A.

LAKE TRAVIS Coach Hank Carter heads into his 12th season as the leader of Cav Nation. The tumultuous 2020 season saw the Cavs finish with the record of 6-1 losing in the first round of the playoffs to Round Rock by the score of 35-21. 2021 started with a bang with the announcement in April that IHSFAN Top 10 Player and former Del Valle star WR Caleb Burton will be running routes at Cavalier Stadium in the fall. The offense will return 4 starters including IHSFAN Top 10 player and Offensive Newcomer of the Year Jr. QB Bo Edmundson. Other leaders on offense include the 4-star Ohio State commit Sr. WR. Caleb Burton, and 2nd AD players Sr. TE Isaac Norris and Sr. OL Seth McDaniel. The defense returns 6 starters and will be led by 1st AD Sr. LB’s - Derrick Johnson and Watson Cusick. Other leaders on the 2021 squad include 2nd AD players: Sr. DE Max Linhoff, Sr. DB Chernet Estes, Sr. DB Jacob Glova, and Sr. DE Trey Dorsett. The Caleb Burton transfer is a game changer for the Lake Travis offense. Burton will remind many Cavs fans of the great Garrett Wilson. Look for 26-6A to be decided on the last game of the season in the annual Battle of the Lakes.

The 2020 Westlake Chaparrals made history again as the Chaps won the school’s second consecutive state championship and the program’s third title. The 52-34 win over Southlake Carroll in the 6A Division I State Finals earned head coach Todd Dodge his sixth state title as a head coach. Quarterback Cade Klubnik (IHSFAN Top 10 Player) returns for his senior season and will have the opportunity to become the only starting quarterback to win two state titles. Klubnik completed 68 percent of his passes in 2020 for 3,495 yards. The Clemson commit fired 35 touchdown passes, ran for 583 yards, rushed for 15 touchdowns and earned the 6A Division I State Championship Game’s Most Valuable Player. Like the 2019 offensive line, Westlake’s 2020 line was arguably the most cohesive unit in all of Texas. The 2021 season features the return of both tackles in Connor Robertson and Bray Lynch along with center Jack Griffin. Mike McKelvy provides impressive versatility to an already dominant group of returning starters. Zane Minors and Grey Nakfoor combined for 40 touchdown runs in 2020 and racked up 2,013 yards for the 6A Division I champs. While the rushing attack was the featured weapon in the Westlake offense, Jaden Greathouse hauled in 63 receptions for 1,145 yards and 13 touchdown catches. Greathouse has earned All-American status in both his freshman and sophomore campaigns and will lead a new crop of Chaparral receivers this fall. Look for Bryce Chambers to emerge as a speed threat out of the backfield as the offense reloads for another title run. Two consecutive state titles have made the Westlake defense the envy of Texas High School Football. Defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, Tony Salazar, is the mastermind behind that success. Salazar leads a talented defensive coaching staff and his 2020 squad responded with six shutouts and allowed an anemic 7.6 points per game. Carter Barksdale returns to the defensive backfield. Ethan Burke was a fixture on the 2020 defensive line rotation and will be a force at defensive end. Newcomer Colton Vasek leads a new breed of Chaps who wish to make a little history of their own.

AKINS Coach Humberto Garza stepped down after 11 seasons leading Eagle Nation. Coach Garza had a tremendous positive impact on thousands of young men and women. Akins finished last season at 1-7. The offense will be led by 1st AD Sr. QB Diego Tello (2109 yards passing and 23 TDS in ’20), 2nd AD Sr. RB Noah Camacho (653 yards rushing), 2nd AD Sr. WR Cash Peters (451 yards rec) , and three-year letterman Sr. OL Rick Mao. The defense will be led by 2nd AD Sr. LB Saul Garcia (75 Tackles in ’20), Sr. DL Kyle Knudson, Jr. DL Aaron Gall, and Sr. DB Jack Kimbrough. From changing their mascot to losing nearly all of their starters, Hays will look much different than the team that went 10-4 and made a deep playoff run in 2020. The Hays Hawks, formerly Hays Rebels, will have a completely new offense, with just 1 returning starter in Sr. C 1st team alldistrict Trey Webb. With both the starting and backup QBs from last season departing, there is a great amount of uncertainty as to who will start at QB come fall. 4th year Head Coach Les Goad says that he may move Jr. DB 2nd team all-district Chris Bruce to QB, due to his athleticism. “If we want to maintain a dual threat quarterback, he might be the top candidate just because he can run,” Coach Goad told IHSFAN. “Hopefully we can develop his throwing part of it.” If Bruce does not move to QB, Coach Goad will likely promote 1 of 3 sophomores to the starting position and utilize Bruce at RB. On defense, the Hawks will only have 2 returning starters, Sr. DB Marcus Taylor and Jr. DB Chris Bruce. Not only will Goad heavily rely on Bruce on offense, wherever he plays, but he will also anchor an inexperienced defense. “He may not come off the field a whole lot,” Goad said. “He is an extremely hard worker, he was not very vocal, but I think he will step up and provide some of the motivation that we need.”

SAN MARCOS When Coach Soto left the program after the 2019 season San Marcos High School hit a home run with the hiring of legendary two-time state champion John Walsh last spring. Coach Walsh led the Rattlers to a 2-7 record in his first season at the helm. The 2021 squad will be led by Jr. QB Isaiah Deleon, Sr. TE Elijah Pearson, Sr. WR Jamil Gordon, and Sr. DB Malik Gordon. The Rattlers ended last season with a 21-7 win over Akins and they hope to use that as springboard into Spring practice and the fall.

AUSTIN HIGH Coach Mike Rosenthal heads into his 10th season as head coach of the Austin High Maroons coming off of a stellar 5-4record in 2020 that included a first-round playoff loss to Vandegrift. When asked about this season Coach Rosenthal told IHSFAN, “Our goals and expectations are the same every year. We want to prepare and practice so we can perform to the best of our ability.” The Maroons will return 4 on offense and 5 on defense. The offense will have to try to find a way to replace one of the best QBs in the State as Charles Wright is now on the 40 acres playing for the Texas Longhorns. The offense will be led by 2nd AD Sr. RB Esau Lopez, 2nd AD Sr. WR Jax Rush, and Sr. OL Patrick Wallace. The defense will be led by Sr. DB Zach Mercado, Sr. LB Andrew Mosser, and Sr. DL Jack Nelson. Look for the Maroons to continue to put a competitive team on the field to compete in a district that includes the two-time defending state champ

DEL VALLE Following a 2020 season in which Del Valle went 3-6, Head Coach Charles Burton stepped down in early March. Burton’s departure also means that his son Caleb, an Ohio State commit, 4-star prospect and an IHSFAN Top 10 player, will be transferring to Lake Travis. The loss of star Sr. WR Caleb Burton will be a big blow for this struggling Cardinals team, that will also lose standout Jr. DL 1st team all-district Jayden Cofield, who will transfer to Manor. Coach Burton’s 8-year tenure was the longest of any coach in school history. On April 2nd Del Valle ISD announced the hiring of Coach Bobby Acosta as the Cardinals Head Coach. Coach Acosta most recently was Head Coach at National powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida. The 2021 Cards will be led on defense by Jr. DB Defensive Newcomer of the year Lawrence Falke and on offense by 1st AD Sr. WR Trenton Leary. CEDAR PARK Carl Abseck heads into his 7th season as head coach (17th overall) of the Timberwolves. In his 7 seasons he is an impressive 71-10 that includes 5 district championships and 1 State championship. Cedar Park finished 13-1 in 2020 and added another District Championship to their storied resume. Coach Carl Abseck told IHSFAN,” Our 2021 team has an impressive opportunity to leave their legacy at Cedar Park. Expectations are always high hear and we have a challenge to replace a lot of key contributors. The Timberwolves will return 4 on offense and 4 on defense, The offense will be led by Sr. QB Josh Pell who has big shoes to fill with the graduation of 3 year starter Ryder Hernandez. MANOR After a mass exodus of Seniors, Manor Head Coach James Keller knew 2020 would be a rough year for the Mustangs. With an inexperienced bunch, including 18 sophomores that were unable to have Spring Football and Summer workouts, the 2020 Mustangs finished 2-6. “Anytime you got 18 sophomores on the varsity team it is going to be tough to win,” Coach Keller told IHSFAN. “The key is them maturing and getting to work out all the time, and getting a good spring football in, and we will be returning and ready to go.” The 2021 Mustangs will be a much more experienced group, returning 8 starters on defense and 7 on offense. Sr. RB/WR Utility MVP Che Nwabuko will provide Coach Keller’s spread offense with some versatility and leadership. Also, in the backfield, Jr. RB 1st team all-district Quinten Joyner returns. On defense the Mustangs will return 9 starters. The addition of star move-in from Del Valle, Jr. DL 1st team all-district Jayden Cofield, will bolster Coach Keller’s 3-man front. Keller will count on linebackers Sr. 2nd team all-district Wilson Buhendwa and Jr. Ike Esonwune to provide leadership on defense. Keller’s offseason focus is restoring a winning culture. “I’m just trying to get them to learn how to win again,” Keller said.

In 2020 a much improved 2-7 squad found itself in playoff contention late in the season for the first time in several seasons. Coach Price told IHSFAN.” We are excited about this season. We had some great players graduate but we have some talented young guys that are stepping up to fill those roles.” The Lions will return 6 on offense and 5 on defense. GEORGETOWN By Ross Fisher

In just Chuck Griffin’s 2nd year in charge of Georgetown, he went 8-2 and led the Eagles to their 2nd best regular season in 30 years. However, the Eagles suffered a disappointing first round loss against Dripping Springs. Georgetown will be a completely different team in 2021, following the departure of 54 seniors. Coach Griffin will only have 1 returning starter on offense, in Sr. QB 2nd team all-district and IHSFAN Top 10 Player Darson Herman, and 3 returning starters on defense. Herman’s main weapon, Sr. TE 2nd team alldistrict Tyler Hawkins, has a good amount of varsity experience as well. In the backfield, Sr. RB Devin Ross will have to step up with the Eagles losing their two best running backs from last year. Ross was the third option in a backfield that averaged 270 yards per game last season. The key returning starter on defense will be Sr. S 2nd team all-district Trent McConnell, who will be tasked with leading an inexperienced secondary. Jr. DT Daniel Obinna and Sr. DT Jacob Noel have some experience starting on varsity as well, and will lead a defensive line that will likely feature 4 up front. With so much uncertainty, Coach Griffin will have to rely on Spring Football to figure out how his team will look in 2021. “Spring Football will be important for us,” Griffin told IHSFAN. “Just getting out there and figuring out who we are, and what is our identity with this team.”

Entering his 4th season at the helm for Pflugerville, Head Coach Charles Taylor will look to improve upon a 6-4 2020 season that ended with a narrow first round playoff loss to Canyon. With 8 returning starters on offense and 6 on defense, Coach Taylor hopes to make a deeper run in the playoffs. “Our district is one of the best in the state, but we expect to contend for a playoff spot,” Coach Taylor told IHSFAN. “Our big one is to want to win a playoff game, so that’s what we are pushing towards.” Coach Taylor’s ambition is validated by the return of several key players on offense. Sr. RB 1st team all-district & 2-time IHSFAN Top 10 player Elijah Oakmon returns as a 4th year starter, bringing a wealth of experience. Joining Oakmon in the backfield is Jr. RB Offensive Newcomer MVP Jake Iloka, who looks to build upon his breakout 2020 season. Sr. QB Jaylon Reeves will start under center for a 3rd consecutive season. With key returning seniors on both sides of the ball, Taylor senses that the upcoming season is a prime window to capitalize on. “They’ve been in the system since freshmen,” Taylor said. “So it is pretty big, that they have been in it that long and we get another year with them.” On defense, Coach Taylor is excited about the return of 2nd team all-district defensive linemen Sr. Trey Snowberger and Jr. Ty Chestnutt, as well as Sr. MLB Darrel Jones.

HENDRICKSON Coach Chip Killian heads into his 14th season as head coach of Hawk Nation. Hendrickson finished the crazy 2020 season 7-3 going two rounds deep into the playoffs losing to Fort Bend Hightower. Coach Killian told IHSFAN,” This season we have a young team that will need to grow up fast. All of our Non-District games are against 6A teams and our first 3 district games are against the top 3 teams. The Hawks will return 3 on offense and 4 on defense. The offense will be led by Sr. RB Breean Arrant and Sr. OL Hunter Hardesty. WEISS On April 8th of last year Coach Steve Van Meter was hired as the new head coach of the Weiss Wolves. In his first season at the helm of Wolfpack Nation Coach Van led his squad through a covid-challenged season with record of 2-4. An optimistic Coach Van Meter told IHSFAN,” I expect Weiss to seriously contend for the district title. This is the most talented group of receivers I have had in my career. JOHNSON By Jake Herman

There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the 2021 Johnson Jaguars – and for good reason. As a new school competing at the varsity level for the first time, they finished 6-4 without a single senior on their roster last year. That means Coach Steve Hoffman will have his entire team back this season. “We have a talented bunch on offense, and kids who play hard on defense,” Coach Hoffman told IHSFAN. “Our goal is to win our district.” Jr. QB Jesse Medina is looking to build off of a breakout year in which he accounted for over 1,800 yards and 14 touchdowns. His favorite targets include the reliable Sr. WR Richard Kelly, who leads the team with 36 receptions, and Jr. WR Ethan McAlister, who averages 26 yards per catch and gives the offense a big-play threat.

Defensively, the Jaguars started the season well but struggled down the stretch, yielding 44 points or more in their last three games. But with everyone returning, look for them to take a step forward this year. Sr. LB Ashton Strasser was last year’s leading tackler and should have another strong showing as a member of Johnson’s first-ever senior class. For a team that should compete in several nail-biting games, a strong kicking game could prove to be a difference maker. Placekicker Patrick Helen’s 7-for-8 field goal rate last season ranks him as one of the area’s best.

DRIPPING SPRINGS By Jake Herman

The Dripping Springs Tigers are looking to build off of a 9-4 season in which they captured the District 12-5A championship. After defeating Georgetown in a high-scoring bi-district thriller, the Tigers came up short against a Manvel team that would later push Cedar Park to the brink in the state quarterfinals. In his 7th season as the head coach, Galen Zimmerman feels that high expectations are nothing to be ashamed of. “We want to stive to be thought of among the best programs in the area and state,” Coach Zimmerman told IHSFAN. “Our expectations are to contend for the district and regional titles.” Six offensive starters will return for the Tigers. Sr. RB 1st team all-district Preston Alford will tote the rock frequently and look to build on another 1000-yard season. Jr. QB and Offensive Newcomer of the Year Austin Novosad will return under center after tossing 35 TD and just 4 INT last year. Sr. 2nd team all-district WR Noah Lawyer will be one of his favorite targets alongside Sr. TE 2nd team all-district Wyatt Leschber. On defense, the Tigers will return 4 starters including Leschber and Alford, who earned alldistrict honors on both sides of the ball last season. Sr. S 1st team all-district Shel Hudson and Jr. DB Gunnar Betts will bolster the secondary.

They struggled in games without starting quarterback Sr. Joey Guajardo, having to rely on the back up quarterback and Sr. WR Tanner Duke Johnson to fill in. Guajardo will look to help Lehman improve in 2021 for his senior season. Sr. RB Joey Mojica, who was the leading rusher for the Lobos in 2020, returns and will look to help this offense improve along with Jr. RB Nick Martinez. With Guajardo back under Center in 2021, Duke Johnson and Sr. WR Kyree Payton will be his main targets. On defense, Sr. LB Robert Vasquez returns after being the leading tackler for the Lobos last season. Sr. DB Artie Martinez will also return to lead the secondary. Overall, the Lobos return a lot of starters and are poised to improve upon their 2020 season.

GLENN

By Allan Cepeda If you ask Glenn head coach Rob Schoenfeld to reflect on his third straight season making the playoffs last season, he will tell you his team “took a step back”. For the first time in program history, the Grizzlies finished the regular season with a sub .500 record (4-5) and were then bounced from the playoffs in the first round to Liberty Hill, 51-0. The Grizzlies can learn a lot from last season, and I believe they will. Glenn returns 5 starters on offense and 5 starters on defense. As we approach the fall season, the biggest question will be, who will be taking the snaps at QB for the Grizzlies in 2021. Expect Jr. Sky Mendez and Jr.Noah Garrison to compete for the starting job. Both have played exceptionally well on the sub-varsity teams the last two seasons. Whichever QB wins the battle will have plenty of weapons at their disposal. Sr. RB Josh Contreras returns after an impressive debut varsity campaign with over 600 yards and 5 TD on the ground and 21 catches for 287 yards, and 3 TD. Sr.TE Chance Taylor is also back. The long frame TE finished with 21 catches, 244 yards, and a TD. In addition, Sr. RB Miguel Cabral, Sr. WR Mekhi Martinez, and Jr. WR Kenneth McFarland are all expected to take on bigger roles in the offense after showing flashes last season. On defense, the Grizzlies will lean on experience from Sr. DB Daniel Hanna and Sr. LB Anthony Click and get contributions from Jr. LB Jaelin Hines, Jr. DB Devin Endel, and Jr. LB Mason Johnson who played very well as sophomores in ’20. Also, expect DL’s Sr.TJ Chirebvu, Sr. Alexander Adams (’22), and Jr. Kobe Childress to get plenty of snaps on the defensive line for Glenn. As they do every year, expect Glenn to compete for a district title in 13-5A-DII in 2021.

ROUSE Josh Mann heads into his 14th season as the Raiders head coach. The Raiders are coming off an incredible 2020 campaign that saw them go from worst to first in district. The squad finished with the record of 10-2 and earned the 13-5A D2 district championship. The Raiders went three rounds deep into the playoffs losing to power house Liberty Hill in an exciting 56-42 shootout. Coach Mann told IHSFAN,” We are looking forward to build off our success in 2020 and meet the standard, expectations, and goal for the 2021 season.” The Raiders return 7 on offense and 4 on defense. The offense will be led by Cooffensive new comer of the year and IHSFAN top 10 player Jr. QB Mason Shorb who had a brilliant breakout Super-Soph season in 2020. Other leaders on offense will be 1st AD Sr. WR Troy Oliver, 1st AD Sr. RB EJ Moore, 1st AD Sr. WR Jaylen Becerra, 2nd AD Sr. TE Nick Hudson, and 2nd AD Jr. OL Alex Deville. The defense will be led by 1st AD Jr. LB Jace Mann, Sr. DL Ben Armstrong, and Sr. DB Jacob DeLon. The Raiders look like the team to beat in 13-5A D2 as the high flying offense will continue to cause headaches for defensive coordinators around the district.

EAST VIEW by Jake Herman

In 2020, East View had their best season in school history, going 7-5 and making it to the 3rd round of the playoffs before losing a shootout against Pioneer. In his 3rd season, Head Coach Jerod Fikac looks to take the Patriots back to the playoffs and mount another deep run. If East View is to follow up on their successes of last year, they will have to lean on the experience of their defense that returns 9 starters. Coach Fikac will count on Sr. safeties Cade Elkins and 1st team all-district Tyler Waggoner to lead the secondary, as well as Jr. Defensive Linemen Vance Herd and 1st team all-district DJ Perez. Their leading tackler, Sr. MLB 1st team all-district Thomas Thornburg, is perhaps their most key returner. Only 4 starters return on offense, including Sr. QB 2nd team all-district Payton Thomas who starts under center for a 2nd year. Coach Fikac will be counting on Thomas to lead an inexperienced offensive line that only returns 1 starter in Jr. Austin Cain. “Having Peyton Adams back commanding the offense, and him being the leader that took the team three rounds deep, I think the players see his work ethic, and his want to, and they feed off of that,” Fikac told IHSFAN. Despite losing plenty of offensive weapons, Thomas will have Sr. WR 2nd team all-district Michael Sedwick and Sr. TE 1st team all-district Jacob Martin at his disposal.

CONNALLY By Ross Fisher

The Cougars moved down to 5A D2, and finished with a 1-8 record in 2020. However, heading into 2021 Head Coach Jason Cecil believes there are reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming season. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons Cecil remains optimistic is the return of Sr. QB Justin Santos. Among a fresh-faced bunch, Santos is one of the most experienced players, having started his junior year. “He showed the ability to bring us back into games when we were down, he really made good decisions,” Coach Cecil told IHSFAN. “And I think he will be exceptional this year.” In addition to Santos, there will be around 7 returning starters on offense, including 4 of 5 offensive linemen. Cecil will lean on Sr. offensive linemen Jordan Moreno and 2nd team all-district Diego Salazar for their experience and leadership. Cecil is also counting on Sr. RB/WR/S Roman Mason to play every snap and lead by example. On defense, roughly 8 starters will return including, Mason, Sr. DB Jamari Twidwell, and Sr. LB Aden Ramirez. Cecil says the area of his team’s game that needs most improving is their pass rush. “We were young and inexperienced in the secondary, and the pass rush is a secondary player’s best friend,” Cecil told IHSFAN. “We have got to find ways to get our guys on the edge more and create more pressure on the quarterback, so we can protect those guys in the backend.”

ELGIN

By Jake Herman The Elgin Wildcats finished 2-6 last season but held their own against their district’s best competition night in and night out. They stumbled out of the gate by losing their first 3 games by a combined 12 points. 5th year head coach Jens Anderson told IHSFAN he was proud of the way his team continued to compete and buy in. “It would have been easy to get discouraged,” he said. “But we came out every week and kept fighting.” The Wildcats will be a much younger team in 2021, returning no more than 3 starters on each side of the ball. They’ll have to replace all-district QB Peter McFarlin and almost all of their offensive line. “Their development is going to be crucial,” Coach Anderson told IHSFAN about his young offense. “We’ll be very young, and success will depend on how fast they come along.” The ‘Cats will benefit from the return of Jr. WR Justin Strong, who missed all of last season due to injury. Jr. RB Sebastian Jackson will be a go-to guy in the running game. Defensively, Sr. all-district DL Mario Navarro and Sr. DL Omari Williams are key players up front who may end up playing both ways. Sr. DB Khrystofer Washington will draw tough assignments each week in the secondary. Keep an eye on So. DL Evan Warfield, who Coach Anderson told IHSFAN has all the tools to become a household name this season.

BASTROP

By Jake Herman Coach Todd Patmon is heading into his 9th season at the helm for the Bastrop Bears. After taking a small step back with a 3-6 showing in 2020, the Bears should be back in contention for a playoff spot this season. They’ll return 7 starters on each side of the ball. The offense will once again be led by Sr. QB Seth Mouser, who will be surrounded by a plethora of talent. The size of WR Damari Monroe and TE Austin Tobola will complement the speed of 2nd team all-district Jr. WR Julius Baynard. The running game will feature the dynamic duo of Jr. Demire Thompson and Sr. Aidan Barger, who each earned 2nd team all-district honors last season. Coach Patmon is hoping that his defensive line can gel fast in order to be ready for their challenging early season schedule. The trio of Jr. Clayton Sherman, Jr. Carson Klaerner and Sr. Caden Rodebaugh will have to factor into the that unit’s success. In the linebacking core, Sr. Christian Lopez will lead from the middle while Sr. LB Caden Allen mans the outside. Sr. CB Dwayne Jackson returns in the secondary.

CEDAR CREEK By Jake Herman

Coach Bryan Hill enters his 2nd season in charge at Cedar Creek. The Eagles came out hot by winning their first two games in district play last season but ended on a sour note with a fivegame losing streak. When the dust settled, their record was 2-7. The Eagles will have to replace a talented senior class on both sides of the ball, but they retain some key contributors as well. Sr. QB Brock McLaughlin was last year’s district offensive newcomer award winner. As the season progressed, he grew comfortable extending plays and throwing on the run. His running ability gives the Eagles a red-zone threat that they might rely on a little bit more in 2021. Sr. WR Josh Roberts will be one of McLaughlin’s top targets. The offensive line is in good hands with a core group of seniors returning. Logan Cohn, A.J. Sinor and Alex Handy earned all-district honors while Trevor Hall and Lorenzo Briones were honorable mentions. The defense will be led by Sr. 1st team all-district DL Jerry Torres and Sr. 1st team all-district LB Ja’Faar Johnson.

MARBLE FALLS By Jake Herman

Coach Brian Herman enters his 3rd season as the head coach at Marble Falls. Last season, the Mustangs finished with a 7-3 record. In every facet, they were one of the most improved teams in the area. Marble Falls will return 8 starters in their slot T offense. Sr. 1st team alldistrict QB Jake Becker will drive the offense with both his feet and his arm. Sr. 1st team all-district RB Robert Adame is an explosive playmaker out of the backfield who averages more than 7 yards per carry. As is the case with a run-heavy offense, Coach Herman says that the offensive line is the heart of the team. Sr. 1st team all-district OL Hudson McBryde is among that unit’s standouts and chief motivators. They’ll also rely on a pair of 2nd team all-district linemen in Matias Fonseca and Geraldo Hernandez. The Mustangs retain 6 defensive starters. Their secondary figures to be one of the district’s best, led by Sr. 1st team all-district defensive backs Ryan Minor and Chris Whitecotton. 2nd team all-district DB Tim Vidal will also contribute. Sr. LB David Rodgers, who Coach Herman says is a “relentless playmaker,” will serve as a defensive leader in the middle. The guys up front will be young but look out for Jr. DL Devin Trejo and So. DL Xavier Lopez to emerge as the season progresses.

TRAVIS

By Ross Fisher Coach Joe Frank Martinez heads into his 8th season as the head coach at Travis, where he has been a part of the team’s staff for 18 years. The Rebels finished 1-6 last season, picking up a road win at Navarro before losing an overtime thriller to Northeast at House Park. They’ll return 6 starters on each side of the ball, which Coach Martinez told IHSFAN he’s looking forward to. QB Joel Gonzales will return for his senior season under center on an offense that will look to use the playmaking ability of Sr. ATH Evontey Jackson. Sr. OL 2nd team all-district Fernando Abella leads a veteran offensive line that Coach Martinez expects to be among the team’s strengths. Sr. 2nd team all-district LB Leon Ekanga will take a leadership role on a defensive unit that should improve in 2021. Sr. 2nd team all-district DL Francisco Cazares will make an impact in the trenches while Sr. DB Daniel Vasquez is a key cog in the secondary.

NAVARRO

By Jake Herman Coach Larry Lumbreras is heading into his 3rd season with the Navarro Vikings. As one of the youngest teams in the district, Navarro finished 1-7 in 2020. This season, they will return 7 starters on offense and 9 of their defensive starters. Sr. OL 2nd team all-district Andres Gonzales and Jr. OT Juan Hernandez will be called upon to anchor the offensive line. They’ll be protecting So. QB Deamion Cervantez, a versatile dual-sport athlete who also hauled in a touchdown reception in the Vikings’ season finale. His top targets this season will include La’Face Bryant and Bryan Nieto, a pair of sophomore wideouts. Sr. DT Rocky Gonzalez returns to make life difficult for opposing centers. He joins a front seven led by So. LBs Alberto Martinez and Brandon Galvan. In the secondary, Sr. CB 2nd team all-district Keillan Moore will cover opponents’ best receivers. “Our focus is to become a tougher football team,” Coach Lumbreras told IHSFAN. “We have a great foundation of young players to build off of. We now have to take it to the next level to start and finish games with a sense of urgency.”

NORTHEAST By Jake Herman

The Northeast Raiders dealt with two separate pandemic-related interruptions to their 2020 campaign. A delayed 3-1 start turned into a 3-6 finish after another 4-week layoff. “The biggest thing was keeping the kids motivated and together,” 4th year head coach A.J. Mustafa told IHSFAN. “I was trying to instill faith in them to just keep working out and keep their grades up …You never know when that opportunity can disappear.” With all but three players returning, Coach Mustafa is excited for the upcoming year. The team will be led by members of his first full four-year senior class on the job. “We’ll be experienced … we’ll get a lot smarter and more comfortable in our style of play,” Coach Mustafa told IHSFAN. “We’ll try and compete and leave nothing to regret.” 2nd team all-district Sr. QB J.T. Thomas will look to continue his progression as an offensive leader. All-district Sr. RB/DB Kawaski Latham will mostly handle backfield work as opposed to working in his customary slot receiving role. Defensively, a trio of all-district juniors make up a front seven that is full of promise. Expect to hear the names of DL Micah Thomas, DL Niguel Sylvain and LB Noa Flemmings early and often once the Raiders take the field. As for senior leadership, it will be supplied in part by all-district defensive backs Markell Joiner and Nick Hernandez.

CROCKETT

By Jake Herman The Crockett Cougars will look to make positive strides during their second season in District 14-5A. Coach Darrick Norton took over for longtime head coach John Waugh in the midst of the pandemic and will now have his first full offseason to build up his team. The Cougars finished 3-5 last season but were able to develop plenty of talented players that will return in 2021. Sr. 1st team all-district QB Michael Newton threw 11 touchdown passes last year and will once again lead the offense from under center. Sr. all-district WR/DL Xavier Chapa led the way with 3 touchdown receptions last year and will play both ways again in 2021. Sr. all-district RB Josh Early once again heads up the backfield, and all-district linemen Sr. Jerrell Hamilton-Jones and Jr. Alejandro Gallegos will anchor the Cougars up front. The versatile So. DB/ATH Cameron Dickey earned last season’s defensive newcomer award and will be a key two-way player. As a freshman, he made the most of his opportunity by tallying 10 tackles per game. Jr. all-district LB Andrew Phillips has big shoes to fill at the linebacker position but could be primed for a breakout year

LIBERTY HILL By Jake Herman

In a playoff run dedicated to the late Coach Jeff Walker, the Liberty Hill Panthers and their signature Slot T offense advanced all of the way to the state semifinals in 2020. After defeating Rouse in the third round, they outlasted Pioneer in the quarterfinals. They carried an undefeated 12-0 record into a semifinal matchup with Crosby. In true Walker spirit, the Panthers battled back from a late deficit in order to take the game right down to the wire. They ultimately came up short by a score of 62-61. Coach Kent Walker took over after his brother’s passing and guided the team through the tragedy. Under his leadership, the Panthers embarked on their first 5A playoff run since realignment. With their “JW” helmet stickers as a constant reminder of their inspiration, the Panthers won their first two rounds in back-to-back shutouts. The 2020 Panthers and their unforgettable season will live on, as will the legacy of Coach Jeff Walker. Heading into this season, the Panthers will have to meet the challenge of replacing graduated senior running backs Trey Seward and Blake Simpson. Defensively, they should not miss a beat. District MVP and all-state Sr. LB Andon Thomas is already receiving offers to play at the next level. Sr. LB Aaron Brewer and Sr. DL Lloyd Johnson each earned district MVP honors at their respective positions. Sr. all-district LB Kaden McMahan and Sr. all-district DB Carter Hudson round out a unit that will once again push Liberty Hill to a likely playoff berth.

MCCALLUM By Jake Herman

In head coach Thomas Gammerdinger’s 4th season, the McCallum Knights have all of the ingredients to take the next step. The Knights were 5-3 last season and suffered a loss in the bidistrict round against East View. After coming up short in the Taco Shack Bowl and then getting trounced by Liberty Hill in Week 2, the Knights rallied back to finish second place in the district. McCallum’s talented senior class has reached the playoffs every year but has yet to win a playoff game. Coach Gammerdinger told IHSFAN that the team’s goal this season is to break through with some playoff victories. This year’s Knights have 9 returning starters on offense and 6 on defense. Sr. QB 2nd team alldistrict Jaxon Rosales is back with his full complement of weapons, including Sr. 1st team all-district WR Nate Davidson and Jr. 2nd team all-district TE JD Jordan. Sr. 1st team all-district RB Brock Fanning will run behind an experienced O-line that includes a pair of all-district seniors in Braeden Price and Johan Holmes. The defense will boast last year’s district newcomer award winner in Jr. DL Miles McCollum. Senior all-district linebackers Tino Rodriguez and Bieke Campos will man the middle. But the strength of the Knights defense may actually lie in the secondary, where all-district defensive backs Ez Guenther and Wyatt Cunningham will make life difficult for opposing receivers. The shifty Sr. all-district DB Jake Hissey is also dangerous in the return game.

LBJ – 13-4A D1 2020 IHSFAN Coach of the Year Jahmal Fenner heads into his 4th season as LBJ’s head coach coming off the single best season in LBJ’s storied 47-year history. The Jags went 5 rounds deep into the playoffs and were just minutes away from earning a trip to Jerry World and a State Championship game. The Jags lost a ton of talented players through graduation including the great Latrell McCutchin and Andrew Mukuba. The 2021 squad will be led by IHSFAN Top 10 player and Offensive newcomer of the year Jr. RB Sedrick Alexander. The offense will return 7 starters and will feature Sr. QB Oscar Gordon and Sr. RB Phazzon Washington. The defense will return 4 starters and will be led by Sr. DL Jayden Rauls, Sr. LB Jaybreon Riggins, and Jr. LB Latreveon McCutchin. Look for the Jags to compete for a district title in 2021. All Jags Home games will be broadcast on the IHSFAN Webcast Network.

EAST SIDE MEMORIAL - 13-4A D2 By Jake Herman

Entering his fourth year as the head coach at Eastside Memorial, Luis Becerra III is excited to work with a younger team. The Panthers, who finished 0-5 last season, will return just 5 total starters in 2021. “The youth of our team brings a sense of excitement to our program,” Coach Becerra told IHSFAN. He hopes that this year’s team will lay a strong foundation for future classes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Becerra sent his players a sheet full of take-home workouts in order to stay up to speed after offseason workouts were interrupted. This was just one of the ways that he helped navigate the team through a challenging season. On offense, Jr. OL Carlos Rosales-Leal and So. OL Joe Flores return up front. So. RB Adrian Trevino Fr. AD Hernandez-Lejia will be relied on as impact players on both sides of the ball. Defensively, So. DT Randy Nunez and So. CB Bryan Hernandez-Juarez will serve as leaders of their respective units. This young Panthers team will look to improve over the course of the season.
