From the desk of the Publisher IHSFAN Magazine proudly celebrates our 8th anniversary in 2022. In early 2015 it was our belief that Austin was in need of its own preview magazine that would shine the spotlight on area High School football players, coaches, and teams. Our very first magazine showcased young men that have since graduated high school, then college, and are now starting their careers and even their own families. When I moved to Austin as a 9-year-old in the summer of 1975 Austin was a small town of just 250,000 and was the 50th largest city in the United States. Today Austin is the 10th largest city in the country! The growth of the area has been amazing. Just since we started our magazine, we have seen many NEW High Schools open and begin their own traditions. The Austin area continues to show the rest of the state that our area teams can compete with the elite programs from around this great football state. Jerry world has seen MANY area teams hoist championship trophies on the field in mid-December. We have all spent the last couple of seasons worried about the global pandemic; and we are hopeful that the term “Covid protocol” will not be in our vernacular this year. It is our hope that no team will have to cancel any games and no player or coach will have to miss any practice or game. It is also our hope that all the school community will be able to enjoy the incredible pageantry of high school football in its full glory. Once every two years the UIL realigns all of the schools into the districts that they will compete in for the next two years. Many area teams will find familiar opponents and a few others will need to update their GPS systems as they will be traveling to new stadiums as they face new rivals. Once again, we have put together 40+ Team previews for your enjoyment. We want to thank all of our advertisers who support IHSFAN and area High School Football…. Many of which has been with us since day 1. Welcome to the 2022 IHSFAN MAGAZINE! Rick Epstein Publisher of IHSFAN

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD By Dr. Scott A. Smith, Texas Orthopedics
On the pages of this magazine, you will see some great teams made up of great athletes. Truly talented people who have honed their skills through many hours of practice, working out, studying, proper nutrition, and, on some level, luck. They have achieved the highest level of athletics…VARSITY. And what is the pinnacle of varsity sports for Texan young men? Varsity Football. How did they reach this lofty goal? For most, the journey starts early, involves a hardy work ethic and includes a strong support system. Many of these high achieving athletes don’t just start out playing football and only football, they are multisport athletes. Three-year-old soccer is often the first sport children participate in, allowing them to get a feel for team dynamics. While not much takes place in regards to the technicalities, strategies, or even adhering to the rules of soccer, they get the opportunity to don uniforms and play together on a 30-yard field, complete with tiny goals. As they chase each other on the field and gather together for snacks, they are learning valuable skills. Parents also get the joy of driving to and from practice and sitting on the sidelines in all kinds of weather as their child follows other children huddled around the ball. This kind of soccer is a must-see if you haven’t already. Four-year-olds have the opportunity to play sports like t-ball, a sport that also involves uniforms, a field, some semblance of attempting the rules of the game and a time commitment. For example, every now and then someone gets out. Plus, snacks. Snacks are also included because those are important too. The skills they learn in t-ball can help when they advance to kid pitch baseball at 8 or 9 years of age, having a better idea of what a baseball diamond looks like, where the bases are located, and what order to run them in. They work on pitching with accuracy, batting at unpredictable pitches, and how to limp down to fist after getting hit with a wild pitch. Four-year-olds are also able to start participating in gymnastics/tumbling. These are great training for the future on how to fall/roll correctly when a linebacker lights you up across the middle. Once children reach five or six years of age, they advance to basketball, complete with 8-foot hoops, and attempts at both offense and defense. The primary objective for most is to try and find the guy with the same color armband. Expectations aren’t high, neither are the scores, but still you talk through wins and losses and how to navigate the emotions that come with them. I once coached a game where we lost 2-0. Flag football also begins around this time, usually consisting of one fast guy who outruns everyone else for a touchdown every time he gets his hands on the ball. He is also the one who pulls 90% of the flags on defense and, in case you haven’t already guessed it, yes, his dad is the coach and yes, he has an older brother. Another sport that starts at this age is swim team. Swimming is a life skill and can, and should, be learned by all from an early age. Swim team is an entirely different beast, requiring a lot from both participants and parents. It demands a major commitment as swim meets start early, go all day (8+ hours) and never seem to have enough volunteers. Parents often end up timing the races and run the risk of missing the short spurt of time their child is in the pool. While swimming itself is an important life skill, it’s also an excellent form of exercise that is different from high impact sports like football. These are just a few examples. You also have track/cross country aiding athletic progression as kids learn how to run faster and farther. Lacrosse has made great strides as a sport in Texas and is used by many football players to help develop ball handling, pursuit angles, toughness, teamwork and more. Men’s volleyball is an up-and-comer and it will be interesting to see how the UIL comes up with a process for the fall season. Golf and tennis are both lifetime sports that can be played for decades and can help with reaction times and precision. That being said, those who play golf and/or tennis don’t often go on to play football. By the time boys enter their freshman year of high school, they have had a wide variety of experiences under their belt and can build on their wealth of knowledge, growing leaps and bounds at the sub-varsity level. As the boys turn into men, the game gets a lot more violent and that is where the pretenders decide to take off the pads and not get hit “like that” again. The young men who make it to the varsity level have endured many collisions and keep getting up, tightening their chin straps, and going back in. This whole journey requires help, guidance, support, financing, and more. Thanks to all the coaches, trainers, therapists, friends, and family members who allow these athletes to participate as well as they do. A special thanks, and a tip of the cap, to all the parents who have made your athletes participation possible. Your sacrifices have been worth it. I hope that this season exceeds your expectations and that you build lifetime memories to share with your grandkids someday, reminiscing about “that one time dad made the game-winning touchdown”, or “made that game-saving block”. Much success and stay healthy.

IHSFAN Top Ten Team 2022 Presented by
By: Jake Herman
In anticipation of the 2022 season, IHSFAN has compiled its annual list of the area’s Top Ten players. Keep an eye on these ten when the lights turn on this fall. Sedrick Alxander, LBJ, Senior RB
Among the magazine-record four running backs on this seasons IHSFAN Top Ten Team, LBJ's Sedrick Alexander is the only repeat honoree. During his junior season, Alexander saw his workload more than double as he assumed the lead role in a talented backfield. For a second straight season, he averaged more than nine yards per carry, totaling over 2,000 yards and absolutely dominating every defense in District 13-4A. The district offensive MVP had a nose for the end zone, scoring 30 touchdown which helped spur LBJ’s historic run to the state championship game. In 2022, Alexander will again be the focal point of the Jags' offense as they move up to the 5A level. "I believe we can do exactly what we did last year despite moving up (to 5A)," Alexander told IHSFAN. "For those people that thought we did something special the last two seasons, wait until this year."
Brayden Buchanan, Vandegrift, Sr. QB
In 2022, the Vandegrift Vipers will lean heavily on the play of senior QB Brayden Buchanan. In his first year as the starter, the Baylor baseball commit tossed 42 touchdown passes, including a school-record six in a single game against Westwood. Buchanan completed more than 60 percent of his throws, tallying 3,017 yards and earning MVP honors in District 25-6A. He credits some of his success to longtime Vipers head coach Drew Sanders, who taught him the discipline to improve his reads. "With Coach Sanders, it starts with character -and the football comes second," Buchanan told IHSFAN. Despite losing three all-district receiving targets to graduation, Buchanan is confident that he and his teammates can replicate last season's success. The Vipers earned a berth in the state quarterfinals before losing to eventual champions Westlake. "Throughout the offseason I've seen a ton of new guys… who have made huge strides," Buchanan told IHSFAN. "We have a great coaching staff and all the tools to run the table this year." 14
15
Cameron Cook, Stony Point, Senior RB
Before a high-ankle sprain shortened his 2021 season, Stony Point running back Cameron Cook proved to be among the most elusive and versatile running backs in Central Texas. Averaging eight yards per carry and 15 yards per reception, Cook forces defenses to account for him at all times. The third-year varsity starter racked up seven touchdowns over his team's first three games. The Tigers were not the same team without him down the stretch, missing out on a playoff spot. "At first it was hard to have to watch my team instead of playing," Cook told IHSFAN. "I know that this season I have to be on top of my game, so I've been rehabbing." But in just limited action, Cook managed to impress several Division I programs and receive a handful of offers to play at the next level. "Ever since I was younger, this is what I wanted to do," Cook said of playing college football. "For my recruiting to go like this, it's something I could only wish for." But despite the national attention, Cook told IHSFAN he keeps things loose and easy-going around his teammates. "I'm not too serious," Cook said. "I'm a fun person -- I like to talk to everybody."
Bo Edmundson, Lake Travis, Senior QB
In his first full season as Lake Travis' starting quarterback, Bo Edmundson took his game to new heights in 2021, earning a repeat appearance on the IHSFAN Top Ten Team. Racking up 3,239 yards and 40 total touchdowns, his maturity was evident as the season progressed. "Sophomore year it was play by play, one at a time," Edmundson told IHSFAN. "This year I was taking command and managing the game… the coaches put a lot more on my shoulders." Edmundson enters this season with valuable playoff experience. The Michigan State commit saved some of his best football for Lake Travis' 2021 run, which ended in the state semifinals. Edmundson remembers calming his teammates' nerves before a quarterfinal win over San Antonio Brennan -- in which he threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns. "I remember telling the guys that it's just another game," Edmundson said. "I know I have the responsibility to the team… I just have to wear it." The Cavaliers will go as far as Edmundson takes them in 2022.
BUSH’S TOP TEN 2022 16
Jaden Greathouse, Westlake, Senior WR
At a school known for producing elite quarterbacks, wide receiver Jaden Greathouse has entered the conversation as one of the greatest players in Westlake's storied history. Through three state championship seasons, the 6-foot-2 wideout has been a model of both consistency and explosiveness. His 43 career touchdowns prove his mettle as a red zone threat, while his UIL-record 236 yards in the 2021 state championship game blew the top off Denton Guyer's vaunted defense. "Just hearing the crowd at Jerry World was so surreal," Greathouse told IHSFAN. "The (Westlake) community has always had my back and come to support us, so it was great to be able to repay them." Greathouse averaged nearly 20 yards per catch last season, amassing a team-high 1,274 yards. In his senior season, the wide receiver is challenging himself to set the bar high for teammates both on and off the field. "My freshman year, we had great seniors who taught us the Westlake way," Greathouse told IHSFAN. "We've built amazing connections over the years… when you're out there trying to get better, you're driving off the energy of your teammates." No matter who is under center for Westlake, defenses will be circling number 9 all season long as the key piece in the Chaparrals offense.
Braylon James, Del Valle, Senior WR
Headed into his senior season, Braylon James has developed into one of the area's premier wideouts. The 6-foot-3 Del Valle Cardinal has always been an outstanding athlete, but he's now turned his attention to polishing his routes. "If I can run routes like a 5'9" guy, like Tyreek Hill --" James said, "then I'll wind up being one of the best guys in the nation." And despite often towering over his opposing cornerback, the comparison isn't too far off. Last season saw James find more ways than ever to impact the game. Setting career highs in catches (47), receiving yards (568) and touchdowns (7), James said that he became a more complete football player under the tutelage of head coach Bobby Acosta. And much like Tyreek, James was a huge factor in the kick return game with 250 total yards. "Because we weren't as successful offensively, we needed a spark in all other aspects," James told IHSFAN. "I was able to do my job on kick returns… and that was exciting."
BUSH’S TOP TEN 2022 17
Quinten Joyner, Manor, Senior RB
Few players were more important to their team than Quinten Joyner was to Manor in 2021. As the second-leading rusher in UIL 5A footba ll, Joyner racked up 2,494 yards and 31 touchdowns in just 12 games. He averaged over 200 yards per game and a video-game-like 11 yards per carry. Any doubt of Joyner's status as the Overall MVP of District 11-5A was erased in his district finale against Cedar Park -Joyner's 404 yards and four touchdowns led Manor to their first regular season win over the defending district champs. As the year went on, Joyner credited his progress to film study with his offensive line. "We did a great job of adjusting and fixing things on game day," Joyner told IHSFAN. He says he'll carry this mindset into 2022, where Manor will lean on him just as heavily moving up to the 6A level. "I want to prove that I can be 'that guy' -- the best on the field," Joyner said. "I think we'll be a good team again."
Noah Long, Liberty Hill, Junior RB
A key cog in the slot-T system at Liberty Hill, Noah Long beat several older players to claim the title of Offensive MVP in District 14-5A as a sophomore. Toting the rock 233 times, Long was the only underclassman in Texas to rush for over 2000 yards at any level. Embodying his team's 'Walker Tough' mantra, Long's quick and aggressive running style became a staple of one of the area's best offenses. "It's a well-oiled machine, so you have to hit the holes really fast," Long told IHSFAN. "Sometimes (defenses) know what's coming…but you just have to keep pounding the rock." Long reached the end zone 29 times and lost just one fumble, leading his team to a state runner-up finish. With a slew of returners on offense, Liberty Hill will once again be a contender in 2022. "We're hungry to get back (to Jerry World) next year and prove to everybody that we can win it," Long told IHSFAN.
BUSH’S TOP TEN 2022 18
Austin Novosad, Dripping Springs, Senior, QB
After an electrifying junior season, Dripping Springs' Austin Novosad is hungry for more in 2022. The District 12-5A MVP led the Tigers to an undefeated regular season, throwing with pinpoint accuracy for over 300 yards per game. But in the first round of the playoffs, the Tigers lost a 63-56 shootout thriller to Georgetown. "I thought our team had a great year," Novosad told IHSFAN. "Although playoffs didn't go as we wanted, we learned a lot and will bring back almost our whole offense next year." The Baylor commit is ready to take both his leadership and athleticism to a new level next season -- a pivotal one for the Dripping Springs program. The Tigers are moving up to the 6A level and will compete in the same district as Westlake and Lake Travis – producing matchups should make any neutral fan excited. "We're ready to go in and compete with some of the best programs in Texas," Novosad told IHSFAN.
Mason Shorb, Rouse, Senior QB
As one of three players making a repeat appearance on the IHSFAN Top Ten Team, Rouse quarterback Mason Shorb went from Newcomer of the Year to , Overall MVP of District 13-5A. Among area quarterbacks covered in IHSFAN magazine, none threw for more yards (3,813) or touchdowns (49) last season. Shorb's completion percentage (70.9) and passer rating (145.8) trailed only Westlake's Cade Klubnik. With his arm strength and accuracy, it seemed there was no window too tight for Shorb in 2021. "I think I grew as a quarterback in the mental state and moving around the pocket," Shorb told IHSFAN. "When you're on the move and things are tight, you just have to make something happen." Looking ahead, the UTSA commit is focused on getting a young wide receiving corps up to speed in time for a difficult non-district slate -- including a week four clash with Liberty Hill. Despite Shorb's five touchdowns, the Raiders suffered a second consecutive playoff loss at the hands of the Panthers in 2021. "It was a dogfight and just came down to who wanted it more," Shorb told IHSFAN. "We won't let it happen again."
BUSH’S TOP TEN 2022 19
2021 Post Season Awards Presented by: 2021 Coach of the Year Coach Jahmal Fenner LBJ Jaguars Coach Fenner is the first ever back to back winner of our Coach of the Year award. 2021 was an emotional and historic season for the Jaguars. Coming off their historic 2020 season that had the Jags just minutes away from playing in a State Championship game the Jags went undefeated through the regular season and added a new chapter to their school history book as they played for a state championship in Jerry World. Coach Fenner dealt with unbearable personal tragic news during the playoffs but somehow found the strength to continue on his coaching journey.
2021 Player of the Year Dior Bradfield Weiss Wolves In 2021 Dior led the Wolves to a 10-2 record that included an undefeated swing through District 11-5A D1 and going 2 rounds into the playoffs. Dior's final stats include 212 completions for 3,386 yards and an incredible ratio of 43 Passing touchdowns against just 4 interceptions. Dior also scored 2 rushing Touchdowns. 20

WESTWOOD
By Rodney Rodriguez Warriors Chief Anthony Wood returns for season 19 after a 1-9 campaign in 2021. The future is bright at Westwood as 15 players return for the 2022 version of the team including 5 offensive starters and 3 on the defense. Sr. 1st Team AD Jack Ziebell - OL anchors the team and will once again be a major force on the team with fellow senior’s 2nd Team AD Grant Jaeger - WR, Brian Romero - LB, Evan Herrera- OL, Hayden Schultz- DB and Emarion Lopez- DB. As has been the case through his tenure Coach Wood has 2 quarterbacks developing and competing for snaps Juniors Owen Norrell and Mike Davis return to help lead the Westwood attack on offense. Juniors Demani Stewart and Ananias Vance will work in the new backfield while Lane Wood and Kaleb Payten will be major factors in the air attack on the outsides. On defense junior Aiden Cheng will have a big role in the veteran secondary. This Warrior team will be young and sophomores Caius CoyLB/TE, Scott Ufflemen- WR, Dylan Cullers- WR and Aebren Whitley will be called upon to be key contributors and appear ready for those roles. Look for a bounce back year for Westwood with depth and key pieces in place times seem to be on the rise along Mellow Meadow Dr.
MCNEIL Coach Scott Hermes enters his third season as the Mavericks Head Coach. In 2021 the Mavericks really seemed to have turned the corner as they finished at 3-7 including two straight wins against Stony Point and Westwood to end the season. Ironically McNeil currently has the longest winning streak in 25-6A. Coach Hermes told IHSFAN, “2021 saw us take steps in the right direction. I expect us to continue to grow and improve in 2022.” The Mavs will return 4 starters on offense and 8 on defense. The offense will have to replace the amazing Luke Hutchison as he will now be playing on Saturdays for Navy. The offense will be led by Sr. QB Brad Whittenberg, Jr. WR Andrew Lesieur and Sr. RB Kaleb Cooper. The defense will be led by Sr. 2nd Team AD DB Aaron Crowe, Jr. 2nd Team AD DB Keegan McBryde, and Jr. LB Bobby Holland. The defense will be the strength of the team and should keep the Mavs close in most games. Someone check the McNeil season rushing record as Kaleb Cooper should both literally and figuratively make a run at a school record breaking season.

25-6A REGION 4
ROUND ROCK Coach Jeff Cheatham heads into his 13th season at the helm of Dragon Football. Last season his Round Rock squad finished 9-2 sharing the district championship with Vandegrift. Coach Cheatham, who was named district 25-6A 2021 Coach of the year, told IHSFAN, “We are returning key positions on both sides of the ball this season. We are working hard to sure up the offensive line.” The Dragons will return 6 offensive starters and 5 defensive starters. The offense will be led by Offensive newcomer of the year Jr. QB Mason Cochran. Other leaders on offense will be Sr. WR Adam Borel and Sr. TE Clayton Charlton. The stingy defense will be the strength of the team as they return 5 starters including Jr. DB and co-defensive newcomer of the year Leonard Moore, Sr. DL and 1st Team AD Jett Jones, Sr. DB and 1st Team AD Jalen Gilbert, and Sr. DL and Defensive Lineman of the Year Ansel Nedore. Once again, Round Rock Dragon regular season games will be broadcast on the IHSFAN Webcast Network.
CEDAR RIDGE Coach Sam Robinson heads into his 6th season as head coach of the Raiders. In 2021 the Raiders finished 7-4 and kept up their streak of beating perennial power Round Rock as well as their amazing ninth straight playoff appearance. Coach Robinson told IHSFAN, “We will be very scrappy and solid throughout. We have great experience returning on defense at Linebacker and in the secondary. In addition, we have some big play ability on offense as soon as the offensive line gels.” The Raiders will return 3 starters on Offense and 4 starters on defense. The offense will be led by Sr. OL 2nd Team AD Ian Wollard, Sr. WR 2nd Team AD Zane Wofford, and Sr. TE Iyioluwa Adekoya. The defense will be led by Sr. DB Julien Meza, Sr. DB Xavien Cox, Jr. DL Malik Cousin, and Sr. LB Jason Taylor. Once again, Cedar Ridge Raiders regular season games will be broadcast on the IHSFAN Webcast Network.

MANOR Coach James Keller heads into his 3rd season as the leader of Mustang Nation (19th overall at Manor). Last season he led his talented squad to a 9-3 record going two rounds into the playoffs. This season the Mustangs will move to 6A as they will take Hutto’s place in the always tough 25-6A district with the RRISD schools and two LISD schools. Coach Keller told IHSFAN, “We have a very strong senior team this season, I expect big things. We will be ready for the jump to 6A.” The Mustangs return 8 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense making them one of the most experienced teams in the area. The offense is led by Sr. RB-District MVP and IHSFAN Top 10 player Quinten Joyner who will be responsible for many hours of lost sleep for area defensive coordinators. Manor will have a very physical line to help open holes for Joyner; Some of the leaders up front are Sr. OL Devin Scura and Jr. OL J.T. Thomas. The talented defense will be led by Sr. DL and co-defensive lineman of the year (and the best name in Texas HS football) Princewill Umanmielen, Sr. DL and defensive newcomer MVP Jayden Cofield, and Sr. LB 1st team AD Sam Shaw. The experience and talent of this team will make them a district championship contender in their first year in their new 6A district.
STONY POINT 2022 will mark the 19th season that Coach Craig Chessher will lead the Tigers. Coach Chessher enters his 39th overall season of coaching and leading young men. The Tigers look to be much improved after coming off their 4-6 2021 campaign. Coach Chessher told IHSFAN, “We hope to be better if we can stay away from injuries. The Tigers will return 6 offensive starters and 5 defensive starters. The offense will feature one of the best backfields in Texas as Sr. RB IHSFAN Top 10 team Cameron Cook and Sr. RB 1st Team AD Kory Thomas both return. Sr. QB Ivan Villegas will return as the signal caller. The defense will be led Sr. LB Jamal Baker, and a pair of Jr. defensive lineman in Chima Oneyjika and Iverson Collins. **BREAKING NEWS: IHSFAN Top 10 player and star WR Braylon James told IHSFAN that his family moved from the Del Valle area and he will be playing for Stony Point this season. This news will certainly give the Tigers an additional amazing weapon as James is one of the best WR’s in Texas. Once again, Stony Point Tigers regular season games will be broadcast on the IHSFAN Webcast Network.

VANDEGRIFT Coach Drew Sanders celebrates his 14th season as the head coach of the Vipers coming into the season for the 4th year in a row as defending district champs. In 2021 the Vipers finished an amazing year at 12-2 going 4 rounds into the playoffs and sharing the district 25-6A championship with Round Rock for the second straight year. Coach Sanders told IHSFAN, “The Expectations remain the same and we will need to replace a great senior class. We are excited to get back on the field to begin our journey to our 5th straight district championship.” The Vipers will return 5 starters on offense and 4 starters on defense. The offense will be led by District MVP and IHSFAN Top 10 player Sr. QB Brayden Buchanan. The offensive line is secure in the hands of the districts OL MVP Sr. Ian Reed and the main receiving target should be Jr. WR Miles Coleman. The defense will be led by co-defensive newcomer of the year Jr. DB Alex Foster, 2nd Team AD Sr. DL Oliver Yndo, and Sr. DB Andrew Scott. The future is bright for the Vipers as Both the JV and Freshman teams went undefeated last season.
VISTA RIDGE Coach Chad Scott heads into his second season at the helm of Ranger Nation. Last year the Rangers finished 4-6 and missed the playoffs. Coach Scott told IHSFAN, “This year we will look to draw on a strong senior leadership group and a host of talented juniors to make an impact and statement in 25-6A. The Rangers will return 4 starters on offense and 6 starters on defense. The offense may boast one of the best receiving corps in the area and includes: Sr. Reece Heffelfinger, Jr. Tian Murray, Jr. Tanner Brosie, and Sr. Jake Pololak. Look for Sr. QB Jackson Harrell to compete for the starting quarterback job. The defense will be led by 2nd Team AD Jr. LB Grant Anderson, Sr. DL Aiden Cruz, Sr. LB Josh Brewton, Sr. DB Syion Allen, and Jr. LB Karson Smith. Look for Jr. OL/DL Charlie Power to help sure up the big fellas up front.

LAKE TRAVIS
By Jay Plotkin
Death, taxes and December football. Other than a 2020 bi-district playoff loss, those are Lake Travis’ certainties. The Cavaliers have reached at least the state semifinals every year since 2015. If the Cavaliers want to return to the semifinals – and go a step further – they’ll follow a tried-and-true formula: a Power-5 quarterback, an attacking defense and playmakers across the field who find the end zone with frightening regularity. With his commitment to Michigan State, Bo Edmundson becomes the school’s 10th straight P5 quarterback. Entering his third year as the starter, he’s looking to improve on a 3,300-yard, 40 TD junior season. Defensively, the Cavaliers return proven playmakers return at every level. Griffen Willis and Jacob Henry may be the strongest DL combo in the area. Linebacker Tavin Lewis made 127 tackles in a breakout 2021. Josiah Estes, Kyle Thompson and Jayden Walker return as part of a ball-hawking secondary that generated 13 interceptions and nine touchdowns. Coach Hank Carter says the offense, despite graduating nearly all its receiving production, shouldn’t miss a beat thanks in part to its large, experienced offensive line. “We have a lot of big, strong offensive linemen coming back and that’s really the most important part to the offense,” Carter said. Mo Oratokhai, Daniel Sowell, Jacob Wilsey and Ben Hartman return to anchor a line tasked with keeping the Cavalier offense balanced. Nico Hamilton rushed for 780 yards as DJ Johnson’s backfield wingman and is prime to step into the lineup. If there’s a question, it’s who gets open for Edmundson? Edmundson completed 259 passes in 2021, but only six to returning players. “We dealt with this a year ago in a lot of ways,” Carter said. “It will take the spring and preseason practice to find out who will emerge, but I feel like we have 10-11 kids who can catch the ball for us.”
WESTLAKE
By Joe Taylor
The 2021 Westlake Chaparrals captured their third consecutive state championship and the program’s fourth title. Legendary Coach Todd Dodge retired in January and his longtime defensive coordinator Tony Salazar was tapped as the new leader of Chap Nation. Look for Jr. QB Paxton Land to get a shot to take over the QB1 slot left vacant by the graduation of Kade Klubnik who will be playing Saturdays for Clemson this fall. The offensive line is battle tested. The return of TJ Shanahan and Kyle Natenstedt makes the transition look promising. Westlake’s offensive coaches are looking forward to seeing how juniors Tyler Knape and Riley Kennedy will mesh with seniors Ben Thompson and Jose Acuna. IHSFAN top 10 player and co-offensive MVP Sr. WR Jaden Greathouse has already written himself into the Westlake and UIL record books. Greathouse enters the 2022 season as a three-time All-American and Westlake’s all-time career leader in receiving yardage and touchdown receptions. Sr. WR 1st team AD Keaton Kubecka caught 13 touchdown receptions last year while Sr. TE 1st Team AD Bryce Chambers snagged seven touchdown catches. In the backfield Jr. RB Co-offensive newcomer of the year Jack Kayser will look to improve on his amazing sophomore season where he found the endzone 25 times. On defense the Chaps return six starters on defense including a pair of Senior 1st Team AD defensive lineman in Colton Vasek and Wyatt Dollar. Other players to watch are Kale Williams and Ford Thompson. Sr. DB 1st Team AD Will Courtney earned all-state honors at safety and leads an experienced defensive backfield that includes returning corners Denim Collins, Judson Crockett and SR. LB 1st team AD Byers Petty. Westlake allowed just eight points per game in 2021 and defense will get top billing as Westlake takes aim at more history in 2022. No school has won four consecutive football titles and these Chaps are more than aware of the opportunity ahead. 32

AUSTIN HIGH A new era for Austin High Football started after Head Coach Mike Rosenthal announced his retirement. In November, Bernard Riley got the nod as the new head coach after serving as defensive coordinator for the Maroons for the past 9 seasons. Coach Riley told IHSFAN, “Our motto is ‘Work to win forever’. We are trying to be great all the time and the kids realize that the work that they put in during the off season will be seen during the season.” The Maroons return 6 starters on Offense and 6 starters on defense. The offense will be led by 2nd Team AD Jr. RB Anthony Rodriguez, 2nd Teams AD Jr. OL Nakia Wilkins-Lee, and Jr. OL Daniel Kregel. The defense will be led by Sr. DB Andrew Alexander, Sr. LB Angel Nunez, and Jr. DB Trent Gray. Coach Riley told IHSFAN, “We are looking forward to facing many familiar opponents in 26-6A as well as welcoming some new rivalries with Dripping Springs and Johnson.” Once again, All Austin High Maroon football regular season games will be available to watch on the IHSFAN Webcast Network. Austin High Football presented by Tarrytown Pharmacy will kick off in August.
ANDERSON On February 9th the Anderson Trojans named their 3rd head coach in as many years as Coach Donald Hatcher will now steer the ship over at Mesa Drive. Coach Hatcher, a Rockdale native, is not a stranger to the Austin area, though the past 14 seasons were spent running the defenses of both Little Elm and Desoto. Hatcher told IHSFAN, “I am very happy to be back in the area. 26-6A is filled with a ton of great teams. Having coached against the likes of Allen, Prosper, and Denton Guyer I am familiar with great competition.” He went on to say, “When I met with the team for the first time I told them that there are two things they can control…..Attitude and effort and so far all of the young men have really done an amazing job.” The Trojans finished 3-7 in 2021 in a very tough 11-5A D1 district. Although they lose the amazing Colin Page in the backfield through graduation, they will return 7 offensive starters led by 2nd team AD Sr. QB Fred Dale, 2nd team AD Sr. WR Cole Canaday, and 2nd team AD Jr. OL Jack Middleton. The Defense will return 5 starters including 1st Team AD Sr. LB I.V. Webb and 2nd team AD Sr. DB Austin Miller. Anderson heads back to 6A and will be reunited with many familiar foes.

AKINS Coach Joey Saxe enters his second year leading the Akins football program. The Eagles were competitive 4-6 last season in the murderous 26-6A district. The new realignment actually makes this district even tougher with the addition of Dripping Springs and Johnson. Coach Saxe told IHSFAN, “We graduated 34 seniors that set the expectation for years to come. We will be much younger this year but our team is training with tremendous purpose every day. Our strength will be upfront on both our offensive and defensive lines. We have a great competition going for the QB1 spot.” The Eagles will return 4 starters on offense and 4 starters on defense. The offense will be led by Sr. RB 2nd team AD Micah Thomas, Jr. Ath. Dillan Lofton, and Jr. OL Isaac Navarro. The defense will be led by Sr. DE/LB Micah Thomas, Jr. DL 2nd team AD Jacob Rodriguez, and Jr. LB Dillan Lofton. The Eagles will not have spring football choosing to get an earlier start in August and play 2 scrimmages.
DEL VALLE Coach Bobby Acosta enters his second season as the Cardinals head coach. Del Valle finished 2-8 in 2021. Coach Acosta told IHSFAN,” As we continue to focus building the program our kids are getting bigger, faster, and stronger. We are looking to grow our program and understand it’s a process and it will take time. We are excited about the opportunity to compete in 2022.” The Cardinals will return 4 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense. IHSFAN was told by IHSFAN Top 10 player Sr. WR Braylon James that his family has moved and he will be playing for Stony Point in 2022. This will be the second straight season that the Cardinals were to lose a key piece of their offense due to a family move. The Cardinals offense will be led by Jr. TE Amare Johnson, Jr. OL Steven Flores, and So. OL Jaxon Taylor. The Defense will be led by Sr. DB 1st Team AD Lawrence Falke, Jr. DB 2nd Team AD Keiondre Lewis, Sr. DB Brock Foster, and Sr. DL Daniel Obinna.

BOWIE Coach Jeff Ables is “The Dean” of all area head coaches as he enters his 21st season as head coach (35th season overall) of the Bulldogs. 2021 was an amazing season for Bowie as they finished an impressive 10-3 going three rounds deep in the playoffs ultimately losing to SA Brenan 5936. The Bulldogs will have many new players that will be given the opportunity to shine as they return just 2 offensive starters and 2 defensive starters. The strength of the team starts with returning Sr. QB 2nd Team AD Connor Kenyon who threw for 2167 yards last year. Other leaders on offense will be Sr. RB 2nd team AD Max Barnes, and Sr. WR Jacob Kastl. The always stingy Bulldog defense will feature Sr. DB 1st team AD Wes York, Sr. DL 2nd team AD Aaron Gall and a pair of Sr. LB’s that each had over 50 tackles last year in Tres Danaher and Brady Bram. The new district 26-6A is going to be even tougher with the addition of Dripping Springs and Johnson so this young Bowie team will have to really gel in order to compete for one of the four available playoff spots.
DRIPPING SPRINGS Coach Gaylon Zimmerman heads into his 8th season as the Tigers head coach learning in February that once again his team would be finding a new district. The Tigers head to one of the toughest districts in the state as they make their way to 26-6A home of perennial powers Lake Travis and Westlake. Coach Zimmerman told IHSFAN,” We expect our kids to be competitive and hold up our core values of Trust, Passion, and Discipline. We have a great community with high standards and we expect our program to represent Dripping Springs well this season.” The Tigers return 9 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense that went 10-1 in 2021 losing in the first round of the playoffs. The experienced offense will be led by Sr. QB District MVP and IHSFAN Top 10 Player Austin Novosad. Other leaders on offense will be Jr. WR and Offensive Newcomer of the Year Kyle Koch, and Sr. OL Brendan Kelly. This offense is loaded with 1st Team AD players including: Sr. WR Garon Duncan, Jr. OL Jackson Key, Sr. OL Reid Robinson, and Sr. K Walker Wright. The defense will be led by Sr. DL and 1st AD Nathan Prehar, Jr. LB Defensive Newcomer of the Year Luca Picucci, Sr. LB 1st team AD Derek Edgar, and Sr. DB Gunnar Betts. The Tigers will be facing their toughest district competition ever but have an experienced and talented team to make some noise and be a factor in 26-6A in 2022.

Coach Steve Hoffman has led the Jaguars in their first two seasons of varsity football competition. The Jags finished last season with an impressive 9-2 season going one round deep into the playoffs. In February they learned that they were headed along with Dripping Springs to the newly revised 26-6A district which includes the current three-time state champ Westlake and the equally impressive Lake Travis. Coach Hoffman told IHSFAN, “We expect to compete and make the playoffs. Our kids are excited to move up to play against some great football teams.” The Jags return 8 starters on offense and 3 starters on defense. The offense starts with Sr. QB 1st team AD Jesse Medina who will fit right in with the incredible QB’s in the district. Other leaders on offense are Sr. WR 1st team AD Caden Winzer, Sr. WR Ethan McAlister, and Sr. OL 1st team AD Chase Taylor.

JOHNSON
The defense will need some new faces to step up with only 3 starters returning. Look for Sr. DB 1st team AD Caden Winzer, Sr. DB Josh Garcia, and Jr. DL Ezrah Machuca to lead the Jaguar defense. Coach Hoffman has built a great foundation with 15 wins in their first two seasons of varsity football. Look for the Jags to compete with Dripping Springs and Bowie for the 3rd and 4th playoff spot.

WEISS
By Jake Herman After achieving a 10-2 season and perfect 7-0 mark in their district last season, Weiss will be formidable again in 2022. 3rd year head coach Steve Van Meter is prepared to adapt to meet the challenges of realignment in the new District 12-6A -- expected to be among the most competitive in the state. “We have a lot coming back. We just have to figure out what the identity of this team is going to be,” coach Van Meter told IHSFAN. “We’re not going to allow ourselves to be complacent.” Sr. QB Tate Reiland (372 yards, 5 TD last season) and So. QB Jax Brown are vying for the quarterback vacancy left graduating star Dior Bradfield. The Wolves’ air raid offense returns four of its starting offensive linemen, including 2nd team AD Sr. Isaiah Mworia. 1st team AD WR and safety Micah Gifford is a deep threat on every snap who has a knack for acrobatic catches. 2nd team AD Tory Simmons and Zerian McQueen are developing into reliable slot receivers as they each grow stronger from their knee injuries. Sr. RB Daelen Alexander was last year’s Offensive Newcomer award winner. The powerful back is also very skilled in the passing game. Weiss’ defense has all the pieces to take a big step forward. The D-line should be among the area’s best in 2022, returning three all-district players. Chad Otutu is a dominant force at nose tackle, demanding double teams and opening up lanes for athletic defensive ends Damare Green and Lorenzo Diggs. Behind them, leading tackler Chase Edwards returns alongside AD Sr. LB Sam Miller. 1st team AD Peyton Morgan is a key run stopper in the secondary.
HUTTO
By Jake Herman After qualifying for the playoffs last season with a 5-5 record, the Hutto Hippos were bounced by eventual state champions Westlake. Despite realignment pairing them with the likes of Temple and Harker Heights in the new District 12-6A, the Hippos have no plans of backing down. “Our players have shown great leadership this offseason, and they want to make a name for themselves,” 5th year head coach Brad LaPlante told IHSFAN. “They know it’s not an easy district, but they’re not backing down from anyone.” After spending almost, the entire season on the road, the Hippos will enjoy a renovated stadium complete with a new video board and entrance. Junior Quarterback Will Hammond began 2021 as the backup but eventually earned the starting nod and a place on the all-district second team. His mobility provides an extra wrinkle in a high-powered offense that returns 7 starters. Sr. all-district WR Gary Choice and Sr. all-district RB Jalon Banks are the playmakers to watch while several younger players will fight for opportunities at other positions. Defensive depth is a question mark but could go a long way in determining the Hippos’ playoff fate. They return just 4 starters on that side of the ball. Sr. all-district linebackers Brody Bujnoch and Kenneth Settles will supply leadership and physicality behind a defensive line led by Junior Torres. 40

GLENN GRIZZLIES Second-year Head Coach Brandon Krauskopf has one season in the books, and it sure seems like everyone is just moving past a successful 5-6 record that included a playoff appearance last year. “We are extremely excited to see our kids in year two of the Slot T and the jump in progression we should make.” It seems the Grizzlies are ready to make an even bigger splash this year. With the confidence of having 15 returning starters, he adds, “We were a young team last year, and the senior leadership coming back will benefit us greatly moving into one of the toughest districts in 5A Division 1.” Of the eight returners on offense, reigning Newcomer of the Year DJ Dugar could be the focal point of the running attack while sharing the backfield with Sr. Mason Johnson. Under center, expect big things from 2nd Team All-District QB, Sky Mendez. With quality OL coming back in Jr. First Team All-District selection Cameron Morrison and Senior 2nd Team selection David Claridge, there is little mystery why Coach Krauskopf is so excited about the progress he is expecting. Kobe Childress, a Sr. returning All-District DT, leads the seven returning defensive starters and is the key to getting the defense off the field. Having three returning senior LB’s is a luxury, and it’s even better when two of them are coming off 2nd Team All-District seasons. AD selections Jaelin Hines and Nehemiah Carter are joined by Matthew Hester to be as deep as any linebacking core in the area. Sr. Dalton Bradley is an All-District CB who, along with Sr. Devin Endel, will be expected to lead the secondary.
HENDRICKSON HAWKS With all the success in their history, the Hawks aren’t used to having to battle back from a down year. After last year’s 4-6 campaign, Coach Chip Killian knows his guys will be up for the challenge. Because of their lower numbers in participation, he knows that several key players will need to provide help on both sides of the ball “to help us get back into playoff contention.” Killian states, “I expect us to be much improved on offense from last year.” With seven returning starters and a sure and steady Sr. QB Joseph Rodriguez leading the way, there is plenty to be excited about for next season. Two of the more dynamic players on offense are Sr. WR’s Bryan Ray and DJ Pinkerton. They should give Rodriquez plenty opportunities for explosive plays. The RB position is in the middle of a battle between a few players for playing time. Up front, Sr. Cash Deibert leads the way after a year of starting on the OL. At 6’3” and 240 lbs., he will be expected to lead Jr. Luka Matamoros and become a dominant player for the Hawks. On defense, ILB combo of Sr. Tony Brown and Jr. Braxton Brown will lead the way together instead of challenging one another for playing time. Jr. Safety Spencer Distefano will again roam the secondary with a passion. His stellar play leads Coach Killian to believe he may need to be one of the players needed on both sides of the ball, where he can also play WR. Bryan Ray will step over to defense when his CB skills can help in the secondary. With Sr. NG Torey Stigall handling the duties up front, Killian feels, “We should be able to fill some openings on thew defensive side.” Guys like Jr. Brayden Durocher need to really show up, whether it’s at DE or TE. 42

GEORGETOWN EAGLES “District 11-5A just keeps getting better. Great players and great coaches!” That seems to be a common thought, as mentioned by Head Coach Chuck Griffin, who is coming off a 6-6 campaign in 2021. If a team has four returning starters on defense, it sure would be nice to have an All-District performer to lead each level of the squad. On the DL, Jr. Michael Valenta comes back after a 1st Team All-District campaign last year. Sr. OLB Ian Lewis will lead a LB corps after an All-District Jr. season. Speedy Jr. CB Leo Diaz will be coming off an All-District season as well, leading the back end of the defense. Of the five offensive returners, C Broden Elliott comes back with 2021 District OL of the Year credentials. Jr. RB Andrew Petter is coming into this season with lofty expectations after an All-District sophomore season. WR spots should be loaded with talent when considering two seniors, 1st Team All-District Drayden Dickmann and do-it-all-athlete Marquis Dominguez, will be favorable targets for any QB. Losing a three-year starter like Darson Herman to graduation is a tough loss but having Sr. utility player Tucker Griffin ready to take over as signal caller gives the offense a boost of confidence to move forward. It’s got to be an especially exciting season to start for Coach Griffin, who shares, “I can’t wait to see how this team develops.” It’s hard not to believe him when he adds, “It will be a dogfight every week.” Everyone will be excited to see just how explosive 11-5A is this year.
EAST VIEW PATRIOTS Coming off a 4-6 record from last year, Coach Jerod Fikac looks for his “seniors to play a huge roll early as we get our younger players up to speed. Excited about the work his boys have put in during the off-season, he also thinks “we will have some young players fill some big roles.” Leading the charge for the Patriots will be two-time All-District selection, Sr. DJ Perez. He has been a dominant force the past two seasons, and he will be expected to lead the defense that has four returning starters from the 2021 season. Shoring up the back end will be Sr’s. Christian Landale and Elder Isokpunwu. Their experience will give the Patriots a boost of confidence about their secondary play. With only three returning starters coming back, it sure is nice to have both RBs as two of the three returners. Jr’s. Jay’lin Edmonson and Assdriel Dianas-Elizalde are both capable backs who can “carry the load as our new QB gets his footing.” It will be tough to replace two-year starter Peyton Adams at QB, but Coach Fikac feels they have some great ones ready to take over. Whoever takes over at the QB spot will be happy to have talented returning Jr. wideout Grover Moore as a primary target. The two talented RBs will be happy to have three hard working linemen setting the pace for the running game. With Christopher McGravy being the only returning starter, Sr’s. Davis Jones, and Austin Cain have all had great off-seasons and will be expected to lead the way up front. Although Coach Fikac feels a few of his underclassmen will need to step up and play vital roles for this year’s success, he makes it quite clear, “Our expectations never change, and that is give our best in everything we do and everything we can control.” ** On March 21st Coach Fikac let his team know that he would be moving to Cuero to be the new head coach of the Gobblers.

CEDAR PARK TIMBERWOLVES After years of Central Texas dominance, Head Coach Michael Quintero looks to continue the trend in 2022. With Spring ball beginning April 19, Quintero and his staff will continue numerous auditions they are holding for spots on this year’s two-deep roster. From QB to CB, there will be no shortage of talented players fighting to get playing time. Quintero states, “Knowing what Cedar Park kids are like, we are so excited to see what next year brings to our team.” With five guys returning on defense, Coach recognizes, “the tradition of excellent D-Line play here.” Along with that, Sr. NG Dylan Tam leads a group of five DL who are fighting for the three spots up front. Athletic Jrs. Henry Wicker and Alex Grayson look to anchor the DE spots while Sophs Hayden Gonzales and Alex Castro will also push for playing time. Jr. Isaiah King will shine at the OLB spot, pushing Sr’s. Kasen Cave and Jackson Fortney. Jr. Reid Vines is moving inside to ILB after a stellar Soph. season. Joining him at LB will be Sr. Brady Elford. Jr. CB Cole McLaughlin leads as many as five capable corners who will be looked at as starters in the secondary. Coming off an All-District Jr. year, Sr. RB Tyree Nicholson will lead five returning starters and again be asked to do numerous things for the Timberwolves. Jr. Ayden Arp and Sr. Aiden Long are toe-totoe, leading a handful of underclassmen into the Spring, vying to be the QB next year. Juniors Carter Woehl and David Duplantier will be the top targets for whomever gets the nod at QB. There are high expectations of these two, as Coach Quintero mentioned them both in glowing terms, “Woehl is a Welker type” and Duplantier “will also help on the other side of the ball.” Returning starter Sr. Isaac Barksdale will be expected to lead the OL. Fellow Sr. Aaron Nambo will now be working on the offensive side of the ball, while Jr. Muneer Alzer and Soph. Wyatt Valiente push their way into playing time.
LEANDER LIONS With an extremely talented group of underclassmen and plenty returning leadership from his seniors, Head Coach Kris Price has many reasons to be excited about the upcoming season. “We’re extremely excited about our numbers coming back. Our kids knowing what to expect on Friday nights will make us much better.” Returning six defensive starters will be a rallying point for the Lions this year. Senior FS Gavin Brzezinski will be running the show from his familiar spot as the FS, while DE tandem of Sr’s. Daniel Cedillo and Joe Vasquez come back for another year together on the DL. The middle of the 3-3 stack scheme will be led by returning stacked LBs, Sr’s. Tony Klaer and Caden Brannan. Finding a spot somewhere in the secondary will be Soph. Zane Woolridge, who will be expected to contribute on both sides of the ball. It’s a bit easier to feel confident about the progression of your offense when you have Center and Sr. leader Brian Romero taking charge of the OL. Alongside him will be returning 1st Team All-District performer, Jr. Ryan Gambino and Sr. G Jorge Ruiz-Williams. Sr. Cameron Burkman will solidify the QB position, and returning starter Damien Stout, another Jr., will get most snaps as the RB. Junior WR Aidan Parker looks to be a valuable threat for Burkman, and do-it-all Sr. Peyton Gordon will be asked to play numerous positions from his H back slot in the lineup.. Centralized district games will no longer be the only way for the Lions, adding “a two-hour bus trip for a district game is going to be a little different for us. Two great programs were brought in, and we are excited about the challenge.” 46

HAYS HAWKS With fourteen returning starters (8 on offense and 6 on defense), the anticipation for vast improvement from last year’s 3-7 record is much expected. According to Head Coach Les Goad, the reason is quite obvious and simple. “The Hawks were very young in 2021.” Sometimes, youth can be a blessing in disguise; it usually shows up the following season. Not to be outworked under Goad, “With experience and a strong off-season, the Hawks should be improved.” By most accounts, 6’3”, 195-pound senior All-District RB/S Chris Bruce will be one of the more dominant two-way players in Central Texas next season. Alongside Bruce on the offensive side of the ball, deep threat and 2nd Team All-District Sr. Kyree Payton should continue to be a concern for opponents while fellow Sr. WR Zach Obara continues to be a playmaker for QB Tyler McInvale. Junior standout and 2nd Team All-District Dylan Clifton, 6’3”, 290 lb. and Sr. David Szoboszlay will take care of business as returning starters up front. Defensively, we should start with Bruce, where he will again patrol the secondary and lead the Hawks’ defense. Seniors Jaime Hernandez and Collin Smith will continue to play a big role in the secondary. Sr. Michael Bischoff and Jr. Matt Melendez give experience to the inside linebacker corps and will be expected to carry a large load in leading the defensive charge. With only one returner on the defensive line, it is important that they again get solid play out of Sr. Christian Ramirez. All eyes will be on how much last year’s playing experience pays off in a run to make the playoffs in 2022.
LEHMAN LOBOS Defense wins championships, they say. Well, for Coach Bruce Salmon, that should be just fine. “We are a young team with tons of potential. It should be an exciting year for the Lobos.” With seven returners on his defense, Salmon hopes the tremendous play of All-District DL Joziah Perez anchors a solid unit. If some of the potential comes through as expected, the Lobos look to improve greatly on last year’s campaign. As young as they were, the Lobos pulled off a big win against McCallum. Joining OLB/DE Perez on the defense will be LB Peter Cienega, who will be put in a leadership position despite his underclassman status. After a year of experience, expect Jr. Ethan Crum to lead the charge in the secondary. The Lobos have tons of potential on offense; they also have a few guys who weathered the storm last year and are looking to show out in 2022. Although, on paper, they look to rely on a stout defense, Lehman still brings back six starters on offense. Jr. QB Collin Richardson will take on even more responsibility as the leader of the Lobos offense. Jr. Noah Long seems to be the Swiss army knife for the Lobos because he seems willing and able to play many skill positions. Sr. standout Center Manuel Adame is the anchor needed to get the ball moving on offense. Because of their youth, it could be an indicator when they open their season against the Lions of Lockhart.

ROUSE
By Jake Herman Rouse Raiders scored more than 45 points per game en route to an 11-2 record and district championship in 2021. But for the second consecutive season, their playoff hopes were dashed by the buzz saw of Liberty Hill -- who led by just two points entering the fourth quarter but pulled away to eliminate the Raiders 56-33. Only two teams in Rouse’s new district 11-5A D2 finished with winning records last season, meaning that head coach Josh Mann’s 15th season is likely to result in a third consecutive playoff berth. IHSFAN Top Ten Quarterback Mason Shorb said that he and his teammates are determined to exact revenge and achieve playoff success this season. The loss of talented wideouts Jalen Becerra and Troy Oliver will surely be felt -- the two combined for 36 of the team’s 50 receiving touchdowns and nearly two-thirds of the yards Rouse gained through the air. Shorb told IHSFAN he’s looking forward to the challenge of getting the team’s young receivers up to speed. Jr. all-district RB Justin Cannon will help ease the pressure, both as a runner and pass-catcher. The offensive line will rely heavily on district co-OL MVP Alex DeVille. The Raider defense improved a lot down the stretch last season and will return several key pieces. Alldistrict linebackers Zach LaCombe and Jace Mann combined for over 200 tackles last season and were the team leaders in tackles for loss. That pair of seniors will join Jr. Nico Fisher and Sr. Dash Adames to form a daunting pass rush.
ELGIN
By Jake Herman The Elgin Wildcats could enjoy the opportunity to start fresh in District 11-5A D2 this season. The ‘Cats struggled to score during a winless 2021 campaign but played their best football in late-season losses to rival Bastrop and Connally. Second year head coach Heath Clawson won two state championships as the running backs coach at Aledo and is now looking to bring Elgin back into the postseason for the first time since 2014. Dual-threat QB and three-sport athlete Nathen Lewis could help Elgin turn things around in 2022. The rising junior accounted for seven of the team’s eleven touchdowns a year ago, scoring four through the air and three on the ground. Leading rusher Sebastian Jackson will be a senior this year and will hope to carry momentum from this two-touchdown performance in the team’s season finale. The offensive line will count on the experience of Sr. all-district OL Jackie Williams. Opponents can’t lose track of Sr. WR/DB Justin Strong, who averaged nearly 20 yards per catch proved to be one of the best athletes on the field regardless of matchup. His defensive prowess is even greater, earning last season’s Co-Defensive Newcomer MVP award by leading his team in tackles and interceptions. The 6-foot-1 playmaker racked up 500 receiving yards, earning an all-district nod at both wideout and punter. Sophomore defensive lineman Dennis Lavigne stepped up last season and earned second team all-district recognition after leading the ‘Cats in quarterback hurries. Jr. LB Derrius Holiday and Sr. LB Cameron Hardy each came on strong during district play -- logging 6 tackles per game and demonstrating their potential to shine in 2022.

PFLUGERVILLE By Jake Herman
The Pflugerville Panthers got off to a scorching 4-1 start before a series of close losses in district play saw them finish 5-5 and, on the outside, looking in when it came to the postseason. Most of the Panthers’ key offensive contributors will graduate this spring, opening opportunities for younger players to take the torch. Sr. 1st team all-district OL John Sanchez will lead the way up front. Sr. 2nd team all-district RB Jake Iloka could become the focal point of the offense and has improved over his two prior varsity seasons. He and teammate Matthew Tryon Jr. each averaged more than six yards per carry, and each will see increased touches this season. Tryon Jr. will contribute on the defensive line as well. Sr. 1st team all-district DL Victor Osuji took his game to a new level and brought toughness to the Panther defense with 7 tackles for loss and 2 forced fumbles last season. The rest of the unit will be less experienced, apart from Sr. DB Jaquori Sturm and Sr. DB John Lawhorne. Sr. LB Vaunzhe Young will take on a bigger role after a productive junior season as well. Slated to face new district opponents including Waco University, Belton, and Killeen Chaparral, the Panthers will be a team to watch in District 11-5A D2.
CONNALLY By Jake Herman
The Connally Cougars finished with a 3-7 record in 2021. After notching wins over McCallum and Cedar Creek in September, they dropped six district games in a row before ending their season in the win column at Elgin. 9th year head coach Jason Cecil is developing a talented junior class that could help propel Connally back into the playoff picture. “The class I’m really excited about are these juniors-to-be,” Coach Cecil told IHSFAN. “I really like this group and coming up behind them we have even more young guys to fill these spots.” With five returning starters on defense, the secondary stands out. Junior defensive back Owen Garcia took home co-defensive newcomer award honors with his impressive play against far more experienced opponents last season. Despite being undersized, Garcia is the team’s fearless tacklers and smartest defenders. Jr. DB Lawrence Doe should take another step forward after being named to the FLX ATX All Super Soph defensive team in 2021. Jr. DL Jaxson Woolridge is a player to watch up front. The Cougars are holding a quarterback competition this spring. Jr. QB Kaden Nguyen filled in after their starter suffered an injury last season, but Sr. Cesar Arizpe and Fr. JaCory Alexander could also factor in. The offensive line should improve in 2022 if it’s able to stay healthy. Jr. OL Leon Nelson has shown great improvement, joining the 6-foot-8 Jr. OL Aiden Newbill to form what could be a powerful one-two punch. Coach Cecil never shies away from a non-district challenge, and the Cougars will have the opportunity to prove themselves against a pair of area playoff teams in Marble Falls and McCallum. With the right contributions from young players, Connally can get over the hump in 2022.

NORTHEAST By Jake Herman
Following a 3-7 season marred by COVID-related struggles, the Northeast Raiders hope that a strong group of returners will lead them back to the playoffs in 2022. 5th year head coach AJ Mustafa told IHSFAN that this year’s team is among the physically strongest he’s ever coached. “I’m so excited about this group… we’re very team-oriented,” Mustafa said. “It may not be the most talented group I’ve ever had, but it’s the most hard-working, disciplined and unselfish.” The Raiders have reason for optimism with their group of returners on the offensive line. The unit will be led by Sr. 1st team all-district OT Ziek Roberts. With quarterback competitions still ongoing, expect the Raiders to rely heavily on junior tailbacks Amari Joyner and Nehemiah Jordan early in the season. Joyner is an all-district returner at inside linebacker as well for a defense that returns 7 starters. Linebacker Noah Flemmings is the centerpiece of an elite unit that will determine how much noise the Raiders can make this season. A two-time all-district selection, Flemmings combines elite physical tools with a knack for reading plays. Opposite him lurks Sr. 2nd team all-district OLB Isaac Mavoungou, who along with all-district DE Niguell Sylvain could cause matchup problems for opposing offenses in the new district 12-5A D2. “For us to have an all-Austin ISD district is exciting,” Coach Mustafa told IHSFAN. “We’re more familiar with each other and all deal with similar challenges. It’s an even field and I’m excited about our chances.”
NAVARRO
By Jake Herman When Larry Lumbreras took over Navarro’s football program in 2019, they finished the season with 27 players in their program. Now entering year four, participation has nearly tripled and so too has the optimism surrounding the Vikings. After a winless 2021 season, Coach Lumbreras and his staff have overhauled the team’s offseason bootcamp -- and he says his players have risen to a new standard. “We have a lot of kids that have withstood tough opponents as young guys, and now they’re sophomores and juniors,” coach Lumbreras told IHSFAN. “It’s been a process worth going through…but we’re not done.” 1st team all-district DL Jacobi Simmons is just a sophomore but already has the look of a programchanging player. With the ability to play nose tackle and defensive end, offenses are in for a long day if they can’t keep him out of the backfield. Junior QB Deamion Cervantes returns to lead the offense, hoping to grow upon the playmaking abilities he flashed last season. Sr. WR Jose Molina will emerge as one of his favorite targets, as could versatile two-way athlete Bryan Nieto. Sr. Juan Hernandez will look to follow up a breakout season in the trenches, seeing action at both offensive tackle and defensive lineman. The Vikings know that they’ve gained ground on their district foes -- but they hope it’s enough to go from last place to the playoff race. Coach Lumbreras hopes that he’s put the foundations in place for an exciting brand of football. “What we’ve got now is a stable group of guys that really pull for one another,” coach Lumbreras said. “It’s a brotherhood. We stand together in tough times.”

TRAVIS
By Jake Herman Among the most improbable playoff teams in the area last season, Travis overcame a tumultuous start to break up their 8-year postseason drought. Suffering from early-season injuries and a demanding schedule, the Rebels lost their first three games by a combined score of 175-8. But in October, they reeled off three consecutive wins which proved to be enough for a playoff berth. “If you would have told me in June that we’d make the playoffs, I would have said you were crazy,” 9th year head coach Joe Frank Martinez told IHSFAN. “To see success for the kids after the start that we had was great… and the way these kids handled that success showed their resiliency and fight.” The Rebels will be one of the youngest teams in the area next season and will need several underclassmen to take full advantage of opportunities to contribute. Jr. OLB/RB Alex Cardosa is the lone all-district returner who will assume a leadership role on defense and tote the rock on early downs. Fittingly, Travis will have a young signal-caller in 2022 as well. So. QB Jonah Mang took the majority of snaps for the freshman team last season, but the athletic So. QB Jordan Davis is also vying for the job. Both will be instrumental to the offense’s success. “We’re trying to find leaders in spring ball,” coach Martinez told IHSFAN. “We’re investing time in their character development, but we’re also here to compete.”
LASA
By Jake Herman 2022 will mark the LASA Raptors’ district debut after splitting from LBJ and breaking in their new campus. Head coach Bryan Crews’ squad tallied a 3-7 record last season, notching wins over future district opponents Eastside and Navarro. “It’s very exciting to be starting a new athletic program, it’s sort of a dream that a lot of coaches have,” coach Crews told IHSFAN. “Watching these kids become football players and teaching from the ground up is a big challenge.” The Raptors will rely heavily on the passing game this season led by Jr. QB Roman Edwards. He’ll have a pair of reliable targets in Sr. Andy Wang (team-high 7 TD last season) and Sr. Logan Abounader, who will also lead the defense from the inside linebacker position. Sr. Jack Woytek is a unique two-way player at both offensive tackle and outside linebacker. He should excel in both pass protection and pass rush, helping LASA meet the challenge of comparatively low numbers. Jr. DB Tate Smith and Sr. DB Josh Jaimes will be leaned on in the secondary. Having endured COVID-related obstacles when starting their program, the Raptors are using the offseason to make up for lost time in strength and conditioning. “Our kids play tough, they play together, and they’re very coachable,” coach Crews said. We’ve been able to do some things scheme-wise despite a lack of experience that are more advanced.”

LBJ
By Jake Herman Back at the 5A level in 2022, the LBJ Jaguars will continue to compete with the best in the state. The Jags went 15-0 en route to the state title game last season, falling short at the hands of Stephenville. “To go and play in a state championship game for the first time in 48 years for an AISD school, I just think it’s remarkable,” IHSFAN Coach of the Year Jahmal Fenner said. “Last year’s team and the season they had should be remembered as the best team LBJ has ever had.” LBJ will only return a total of 9 starters, but several other returners logged quality reps in the playoffs, giving coach Fenner confidence that they have the core group to make another deep run. IHSFAN Top Ten RB Sedrick Alexander will carry the offense, looking to follow up on a 2200-yard, 30 touchdown season. With Thomas Contreras returning to lead the o-line, Alexander will have plenty of room. As has become standard at LBJ, the Jags will be extremely talented at the skill positions, featuring some of the best two-way athletes in Texas. Jr. 2nd team all-district WR/DB Fatu Mukuba made significant strides last season, as did all-district linebackers Tre McCutchin and Therion Gary. Keep an eye on young Hunter Howard, who coach Fenner said has earned more opportunities at outside linebacker this season. Fans who tuned in to the state championship game will also remember the monster performance of Sr. all-district DB Noah Baker, who was injured last offseason but enters this spring as a vocal leader. Tall wideout Ja’Quan McGee is an x-factor who flashed his game-changing ability early last season before suffering an injury. Gharion Hawthorne is the heir apparent at quarterback who filled in admirably when Oscar Gordon’s shoulder held him out of the Lampasas game last season.
CROCKETT
By Jake Herman In year three of the Darrick Norton era at Crockett, the Cougars are determined to break up a 25-year drought since their last golden ball. Among the youngest teams in the area last season, Crockett finished 2-8 overall but were a win over Travis away from making the playoffs. This season, they’ll be deeper and more experienced. “I have a team of unsung heroes who play for each other and play with heart,” Coach Norton told IHSFAN. “This team doesn’t quit.” Out of 17 returning starters, two-time all-district ATH Cameron Dickey may be the most vital to the team’s chances in 2022. Taking on the duties of quarterback and free safety, he’ll be asked to make plays both in space and under center. Jr. Jacob Reed could see looks at quarterback as well, freeing Dickey to play in space. With the graduation of leading receiver Xavier Chapa, sophomore all-district wideout Jamari Wilson will see extra looks. For a team that often works out of the slot T, having the entire offensive line back will be a massive boost. Sr. all-district OL Alejandro Gallegas will lead the way, opening more lanes for fullback Ethan McLaughlin. Coach Norton hopes that a more competitive non-district slate will help his team build confidence to get rolling in 2022. Last season pitted the Cougars against playoff-caliber teams early, which resulted in growing pains for a young defense. With all-district sophomore DE Caleb Dickey and NT Aidan Lantron comprising a strong defensive line, Crockett will count on some key transfers to step up in the secondary. The margins will be tight in the playoff race behind LBJ in District 12-5A, and with defensive improvement the Cougars could be right in the mix.

By Jake Herman
The McCallum Knights broke through with a playoff victory last season, needing overtime to hang on against Glenn and capture the first golden ball of head coach Thomas Gammerdinger’s four-year tenure. The Knights finished 8-4 but stumbled out of the gates, dropping two non-district games to Connally and Lehman teams that finished a combined 4-16. But a road win over Marble Falls turned the tide as district play began. After losing to Liberty Hill, the Knights would go on to win their next five in a row. Relying on a suffocating defense that allowed less than 20 points per game, the Knights advanced to the area round before falling to Alamo Heights. No team in the realigned District 12-5A will have to replace more all-district talent than McCallum in 2022. Offensive lineman of the year Johan Holmes and defensive MVP Tino Rodriguez are graduating -- and so are 1st team all-district players at most starting positions on both sides of the ball. In total, 29 players received all-district recognition but just three will return. TE JD Jordan may be asked to take on a bigger role, as will 2nd team all-district CB David Houston. All-district honorable mention DE Anthony Hernandez is the lone returner on a starting defensive line that was one of the team’s strengths last season. Rebuilding last season’s talented roster will be a tall task in 2022, but the 2021 Knights certainly set the example for McCallum football in years to come.

EASTSIDE
By Jake Herman After playing against new programs Austin Achieve and LASA last season, Eastside (no longer Eastside Memorial) suspended their varsity football program until 2022 due to low participation. This season, the Panthers will move up to the 5A level and compete in a district with their fellow Austin ISD schools in district 12-5A D2. Head Coach Luis Becerra told IHSFAN, “Eastside is looking to be more competitive in district 12-5A D2 going up against schools with similar football numbers. Our young team has had a great offseason and we look forward to the next three seasons with our core group.” The Panthers will take the field looking for their first win since 2017. Look for the following group of Sophomores to lead a very young squad: Soph OL/DL Keveair Tobar, Soph OL/DL Jaden Benson, Soph. DB Jamykal Jones, and Soph. LB Eric Matamoros.

LOCKHART
By Rodney Rodriguez The Lockhart Lions will look to contend for a district championship in the new mega competitive 13-5A DII. The Lions return 21 lettermen from the 2021 2-8 team including 7 offensive and 6 defensive starters. In his 4th season at Lockhart after many successful seasons at Abilene Cooper head coach Todd Moebes appears to be on a great path to “Restore the Roar” in Lion Country. Senior ATH- Diante Jackson a 4-year letterman will draw lots of attention after a 2021 that saw 50 tackles and 374 yards tallied for the 1st team safety and 2nd team receiver. Fellow senior and 3 year letterman RB Sean McKinney will look to carry the ground game once again after 1,029 rushing yards and 1,200 all-purpose yards in 2021. Junior QB Ashton Dickens, a 2-year letterman and 2021 Newcomer of the Year passed for 1,449 yards and 15 TD’s while rushing for 940 yards and 2,389 total yards will guide the Lion’s offense. Senior LB Treveon Hopkins, a 2-year letterman, will help anchor the defense as well as working in the backfield on the offensive side after registering 39 tackles, 3 sacks and 3 PBUs in the 2021 season. Junior DE Trent Holcomb will be a force on the edge off of ‘21 season that included 12 tackles and 2 sacks.
LIBERTY HILL By Jake Herman
In his first full season as the head coach, Kent Walker led Liberty Hill to the state championship game. A loss to South Oak Cliff at Cowboys Stadium meant that the Panthers finished their year with a 13-3 record. “With everything that’s taken place here at Liberty Hill, to be able to fight our way back to the state championship game meant a lot to not only me, but our community,” Coach Walker told IHSFAN. “I’m extremely proud of our kids, and that sets the tone for this year.” The Panthers’ slot-T offense will once again give opponents fits, returning 9 of its starters. As Coach Walker told IHSFAN, it all starts up front for Liberty Hill -- who returns a pair of senior all-district offensive line stalwarts in Hudson Stillwell and Jackson Harrison. Sr. 2nd team all-district QB Reese Vickers may not get much recognition given the Panthers’ run-heavy tendencies but has impressed Coach Walker this offseason. IHSFAN Top Ten running back Noah Long will shoulder a heavy load in his junior season, but opponents must also account for all-district backfield mates Sr. Logan Dyer and Jr. Joe Pitchford. New faces will be asked to step up on a defense that returns only 3 starters. All-district seniors DT Wyatt Sprinkle, S Carlton Schrank and CB Aden Burrell have worked extremely hard in the offseason, but Coach Walker knows he’ll need all 11 to get up to speed and replace some of the talent they lost. With realignment imposing more travel on the Panthers in 2022, Coach Walker and his staff are excited for the competition. As a program seeking state championships every year, Liberty Hill has embraced being “the hunted” every week. “Our kids don’t really care who comes out of the opposing locker room, they just want to play the game,” Coach Walker said. “It says a lot about them and our tradition.”

By Jake Herman With the departure of longtime head coach Todd Patmon (who is joining Bobby Acosta’s staff at Del Valle), the Jake Griedl era has arrived in Bastrop. The former Lake Travis receivers coach returns to central Texas after a stint as the head coach at Marshall High School in Missouri City. His new staff includes both coordinators from Marshall and longtime Lake Travis offensive line coach Kyle Spano. To kick off his Bastrop career, Coach Griedl told IHSFAN he’s determined to get the absolute most out of his players. “Change can be hard on kids, but they’re resilient,” coach Griedl said. “It’s our responsibility to earn the respect of the players, and we’re here to build new relationships.” From day one, Griedl said, he’s asked his players to lean into a new process to make a visible difference. “We want to build a tough culture,” Coach Griedl told IHSFAN. “We want to establish that when you play the Bastrop Bears, you’re in for a hell of a tough game.” With the talent returning to Bastrop this season, there is plenty of reason for optimism. Sr. all-district RB De’Mire Thompson and Sr. all-district WR Julius Baynard will be a formidable playmaking tandem. Seth Mouser returns under center and will look to build on his strong season. Sr. All-district DL Carson Klaernar and DE Antonio Sanchez will be the heart and soul of the defense and have shown great leadership in the offseason.

CEDAR CREEK By Jake Herman
This offseason, the Cedar Creek Eagles removed the interim tag and hired Josh Thomas to be their next head coach. Thomas has been an assistant coach in the program since its inaugural season in 2010, serving as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. “Our fan base is growing when they see we’re doing things right. We’re still so young that we can create tradition,” coach Thomas told IHSFAN. This offseason, coach Thomas has placed his focus on mental toughness. “We’ve been challenging the kids every day to build a mentality that gives them a chance,” coach Thomas said. “We’re not shy talking about wanting to win a district championship.” The Eagles return 7 starters on each side of the ball and will rely on a strong junior class to improve on last season’s 1-9 record. Sr. QB Bryan Allen took over as the signal-caller during district play a year ago and has grown into the role. Junior wideouts Kade Masters and Chris Nino will work out of the slot, but the Eagles will need to execute in the running game to have success. Jr. RB K’Veahon Houston will supply some power while Nino and Sr. RB Tucker Fitzhugh factor in the backfield committee as well. Juniors Hector Arredondo, Lorenzo Chairez and Ayden Abrego return to anchor the offensive line. A defensive unit that gave up 46 points per game last season will look to turn things around. Coach Thomas is excited about the potential of his defensive line, which includes juniors Mason Thomas, Grant Davis and Tristan Cornwell. A pair of senior safeties will provide leadership in the form of multi-year starters JJ Ruiz and Vincent Mitchell. Senior LB Diego Salinas is another key returner for a unit that is trying to improve physically in pursuit this offseason.
