Summer Food Service Program’s s Free Meals for Kids and Teens During the school year, many children in Central Texas depend on free or reducedprice meals to sustain a full and nutritious diet. As that last school bell rings, the excitement of summer and trips to the pool , biking in the neighborhood, and weekends at the park with family can be tempered by anxiety and worry about how to maintain access to healthy meals throughout the summer months. Fortunately, beginning in June, hardworking families faced with stretching their dollars to make ends meet were invited to participate in a Summer Food Service Program. Sendero Health Plans partnered with the Capital Area Food Bank and Central Health to offer children ages 18 and younger free, nutritious lunches at the at the Central Health Southeast and Wellness Center. Not only that, but we went one step further by providing free transportation and invited parents to join in the free meal program and spend some quality time with their children. With a goal of serving over 2,100 meals, we’re proud to have supported children and their families through this important program. To learn more about the Summer Food Program m and find a location near you, call 512-593-6227 or visit summerfood.org. 4 July-September 2015

Why You Should Quit Smoking Today Did you know that when you quit smoking, it takes just 20 minutes to start feeling the positive effects? Here are some of the aspects of your health you improve and the risks you reduce when you toss the cigarettes for good. Stroke risk

Risks you reduce

Plan ahead.

Know your triggers.

Pick a start date and know that THIS is the beginning of a healthier future and the day your life will begin changing for the better.

Whether it’s coffee, tobacco or certain places and people that cause that cigarette craving, recognize and anticipate your triggers, and come up with a plan for how you’ll resist temptation.

Take it a day at a time. It might be discouraging to imagine a lifetime without cigarettes, so instead take it a day (or even an hour!) at a time, and be sure to celebrate the small victories.

Plan for withdrawals. As with any addiction, when you quit smoking, you’ll experience certain withdrawals. Research options like nicotine patches and gum, which will help you wean yourself off.

Don’t give up. There might be moments when you waver in your decision to quit or contemplate giving into a craving. Remember that millions of people have gone through this experience and quit successfully. You can do it, too—and your life will be better than ever!

Technology

3 Reasons Why You NEED A Personal Health Record A personal health record (PHR) is an account of your medical history. Think Facebook for your health, but instead of documenting memories of dinners and vacations, it contains a record of your health problems and progress, lab results, physicals, medications and treatments. And like Facebook, it’s up to YOU to update it. Keyword: personal.

Step one: Set it up. Then just maintain it and keep it as updated, accurate and detailed as possible. What’s the purpose? What are the benefits? Here’s a breakdown.

1

In case of emergency, your PHR will answer for you if you can’t. It works the same way for your loved ones. Take allergies, for example. When you aren’t present or simply aren’t able to communicate what medication is or isn’t safe to administer to you or your child, your PHR will relay that crucial information on your behalf.

2

Your PHR contains your diagnoses, physician’s orders and medicinal doses. When you attempt to keep track of these things, it’s easy to get confused. Prescriptions get muddled, you doubt your notes or you might even mistake last month’s dose for this month’s updated one. Your PHR keeps everything straight for you.

3

Filling out consent and authorization forms in advance cuts out a step and means that if something happens, the health practitioner won’t have to wait to commence necessary treatment or surgery . Name your best friend or significant other for release of information, if you like.

The PHR saves lives. Do you have one? Don’t wait!

Win a Bike! Coloring Contest

Good For The Heart When it comes to exercise, bike riding is an excellent bet on both the fun and fitness fronts. This exercise doesn’t just work your legs—the biggest muscle mass in your body—but it’s great for your heart and lungs as well. It’s also one of the best low-impact exercises out there, and it has the bonus of being a super family-friendly activity. Introduce your children to bike riding, and they’ll spend hours and hours partaking in an activity that’s not just enjoyable but totally healthy as well. One great way to integrate this workout into your lives and spend some quality time with your kids is by taking the bikes on a little getaway where you can explore a nearby beach, a small country town, or even a scenic trail in a quiet wood, which gives you the opportunity to talk while you ride. Another fun aspect of this activity is shopping for gear to, shall we say, “pimp your rides.” Investing in equipment and accessories that keep your kids safe is an upgrade totally worth making. The bottom line? Bike riding is physical activity, family bonding and fun—all rolled into one. What are you waiting for? Hop on a seat, strap on a helmet, and pedal your way to a healthier, happier life. It’s as easy as…well, riding a bike.

Listen Up! I have the best job in the world When the state threatened to shut down Reagan High School for low test scores, Anabel Garza led the charge to turn things around and make Reagan a successful educational institution Reagan High School Principal Anabel Garza is perhaps best known for leading the remarkable turnaround at her school when it faced being shut down by the state if it didn’t raise its test scores. Even then, however, she was no stranger to adversity. At 16, Garza had become pregnant while still in high school in Brownsville. But she persevered and went to college, working at a Kmart while taking a heavy course load and eventually earning an undergraduate degree at the University of Texas and then a master’s at SouthwestTexas State University. Tragedy struck later, however, when her first husband, Ramiro Olvera Jr., died of a brain aneurysm. He was just 27 and their lives together had only just begun, four years into their marriage with an eight-month-old son. Now 53, Garza likened those struggles to o being buried in an avalanche and having but one option: dig out. “When my husband passed away, I had a baby and no money,” Garza recalled. “What was I going to do, sit and cry? I had to figure out how to create a more sustainable plan.” But her challenges weren’t just personal, but professional as well. When Garza took the reins as principal at Reagan in 2008, both the school and the community were teetering. 8 July-September 2015

Garza with her children, Adrianne and Trey

Once a proud institution, Reagan had in more recent years spiraled downward. Test scores were plummeting, students were leaving, and the state had labeled Reagan academically unacceptable. In 2009, the state’s terse ultimatum cut to the bone: Bring Reagan to federal standards in a year, or we’ll be forced to close it down. Buried under its own problems, Reagan High dug itself out under Garza’s upbeat leadership, and in 2011 it was designated an Early College High School, meaning students can graduate with college credits.

“I had to give it my all, so my family sacrificed. I learned they would support me no matter what.”

As for Garza’s personal life? She and her husband, Humberto Garza, have two children: a daughter, Adrianne, and son, Trey. Ideal recently talked with Garza about her role in that remarkable transformation, the motivation for her work, and the struggles of balancing a high-powered career with the needs of family.

Ideal: What drives you in your work? Garza: I think I have the best job in the world. Each and every day, you have an impact on somebody else’s life. Kids are so malleable, you know, and you just give them the most you can possibly give them. We all work for a product in our jobs. Ours is a living thing. At the end, it’s like a beautiful flower. The more attention and sun and rich soil you give, the plant gets more beautiful. It’s like that with kids. It’s like watching the flower bloom. I get a big satisfaction [out of] watching that happen.

What’s your recipe for turning a culture of low performance into one of success? Garza: It’s high expectations, never thinking “Poor baby, because [the students is] in a difficult situation, we should take it easy.” It should be even more rigorous. Teachers have to work harder. Attendance: You must be there in order to learn. A lot of families are faced with a big crisis, situations that are challenging. Some will take a child out of school to make money and to help the family financially. A lot of them fall in love with the little extra money they’re making and the child never returns to school. I’m asking them to give that up in order for the kids to receive a better education and pull themselves out of poverty for the long haul. That’s a lot to ask. I get a response that’s all-in.

How do you balance career and family? Are there enough hours in the day?

Under Garza’s leadership, Reagan test scores improved and the school progressed from a lowperformance institution to an impressive educational facility.

Garza: There aren’t. So you have to be selective about the things you choose to do during the day and prioritize and make sure your family is a big part of that always. My kids have felt loved and respected the whole time. My husband or I are always at whatever they’re doing, supporting their efforts and trying to make pathways for them that are easier than the pathways we had to walk.

Get Engaged! AISD Teaches Parents How They Can Support Education AISD Office Builds Bridges Between Parents, Schools For any parent, navigating a school system for the first time—particularly one as sprawling as Austin’s—can be challenging, and maybe even intimidating. The experience can be even more daunting for parents who don’t speak English. Overcoming language gaps is just one of the reasons the Austin ISD’s Parent Engagement and Support Office exists, says Claudia Santamaria, who until recently headed the office. (In July, Santamaria became the assistant director of dual language at AISD, where she will continue to work with parents.) “The office is here to kind of bridge those gaps,” says Santamaria, “of language, socioeconomic (circumstances), of resources, and of information.” Santamaria wants Austin ISD parents to know they shouldn’t feel intimidated, but empowered. She says a wealth of help and information about

parent support and resources is available to them, all geared to building positive relationships between parents and schools. Having parents who are engaged in their child’s education is central to developing those relationships and a major focus of the work of the Parent Engagement and Support Office, Santamaria says. Parents’ questions about their child’s education aren’t only invited, they’re encouraged. Ideal spoke recently with Santamaria about the Parent Engagement and Support Office and the many resources available to AISD parents.

Ideal: What does parental engagement look like? Santamaria: For a long time, it was things like parents who sold popcorn to raise money for the school and who made copies for the teacher. I always strive to push myself and motivate my staff to move forward in ways that are more creative and different. Home visits and phone calls don’t always have to be about there being a problem. Can we create some [messages] to families that are congratulatory? That are creative and that are more than just “Come volunteer one day a year.” Our parents have a lot of gifts they can bring to our schools. I think tapping into those is really critical.

One message you want to convey is that parents should feel empowered. Santamaria: Absolutely. We have to create conditions in our schools so that parents can find their place. What does that empowerment look like to them? That means

“Home visits and phone calls don’t always have to be about there being a problem.” for families who are immigrants and don’t speak the same language, families that are same gender, [families that are] non-traditional and traditional, it’s about creating those family-friendly conditions. That’s really the key to the work we do.

Are kids whose parents are engaged more successful in school? Santamaria: About five years ago we participated in a study. We looked at seniors from four large school districts in Central Texas, including ours. We surveyed kids who had walked the stage or who were getting ready to graduate, and we asked them about the role of their parents in that journey. Ninety percent of the kids in that study said [their] mom and dad or somebody in [their] family had a big part in [them] being here today.’

How can parents support their child’s education? Santamaria: Words of encouragement are very powerful when children receive them from the people they love most -- their parents. Positive words about their schoolwork can raise their self-esteem more than buying material rewards. Also, schools are famous for sending home notes, communication, progress reports, and academic announcements. All are stuffed in students’ backpacks. Stay in the know. Make it a routine to have your child open their backpack and pull out what is inside on a daily basis when they arrive home from school. For more And join your school’s PTA. Parenting

Getting Your Kids to Listen Keep calm. DO: Remain soft-spoken. The louder your child is, the softer you should speak when responding. Tantrums often fizzle out just as quickly as they start. Saying “uhhuh,” “okay” or “I can see that” is often enough to show sympathy, encouraging calm communications. Calm kids listen; screaming and crying kids can’t hear you. DON’T: Just issue orders. “No running!” “No tantrums!” This isn’t only negative but ineffective. Talk to your children as if they’re adults, but not at a level that’s above their comprehension. Explain things in a way that makes sense. For example: “When you run here, it makes me worried because you might bump into something and hurt yourself.” Or “Please talk softly when you’re ready so Mommy can understand you.”

As a parent, you compete with so much stimuli that introducing rules to this vast world might make you seem like a tyrant in your child’s eyes. Here are three main points to remember at the most challenging moments:

Use Substitution. DO: Keep your cool and offer alternatives when kids ask for the darnedest things. “No, you can’t sleep on the roof, but I’ll show you how to make a fort right here!” “No, we can’t stay here forever, but you can see them again soon! Let’s say bye-bye to the penguins!” DON’T: Use an angry tone when saying “No.” Reserve a firm and unyielding—but still friendly—tone for the “final word” or “discussion closed” moment.

Get Some Facetime. DO: Hunker down and make eye contact. If they’re distracted, you could say something like “Please look at mommy.” If you’re distracted, let go of the distraction and take a moment to concentrate on the dialogue of the moment.

LOCAL RESOURCES Don’t let parenting scare you! There are local organizations designed to help you firm up those Mommy and Daddy muscles and help you to be the best you can be. Reach out to Any Baby Can and learn about their home visits, parenting classes and support groups. 12 July-September 2015

DON’T: Make it so they associate looking at you with being scolded. You shouldn’t holler from elsewhere and then march in when you’re not obeyed swiftly. Go to them, join or watch the fun (even if it’s jumping on the bed) and then give your directions.

Nutrition

Reduce the Risk: Diabetes Believe it or not, you can’t blame your child’s sweet tooth on candy companies. Children gravitate towards sugary, starchy food because evolution dictates it. After all, sugar and starch equal calories, and calories equal energy for growth! And it takes a lot of energy to grow. However, these calories need to come from a healthy source—and a Snickers bar doesn’t qualify. Preventing Diabetes: Here’s the scientific breakdown: Sugar and starch become glucose, and glucose is only useful when it gets into a child’s cells. Insulin does this job, moving glucose from blood to cells. It’s when glucose stays in the blood that there are problems. Of the millions with diabetes, 90-96% have Type 2, where the pancreas does produce insulin, but there’s either too little of it or the body refuses to use it. (This is insulin resistance.) The good news? This isn’t just treated by insulin shots and diet and exercise. It’s also prevented by diet and exercise. Here we break down a few easy ways to create a healthier lifestyle for your children (and yourself!) to do the best you can to avoid diabetes…

Learn more at senderohealth.com/idealcareeng/wellness.html 14 July-September 2015

ideal

First off, don’t panic, don’t be paranoid and— whether or not you have diabetes or prediabetes in your family tree—don’t make any sudden movements. The illness developed slowly, and it’s important to realize that preventing it is an ongoing process. When cutting down your kids’ sugar intake, remember that you have pantry power! Don’t just throw all the Pop-Tarts in the trash and say “No!” to sugar entirely. Instead, slowly exchange the contents of your pantry with healthier options. To avoid conflict—and perhaps a full-on mutiny—from your kids, host a “Favorite- Food Conference” where they can discuss preferences and you can make compromises. What won’t they give up? What would they do exercise-wise to earn those Hostess cupcakes? Speaking of exercise, gym memberships and sports leagues, while great, aren’t necessary. You should aim for 60 minutes of activity each day, but this movement can be implemented into almost anything you do, and your home can even serve as a gym of sorts. Challenge each other to see who can get more steps. Jog up and downstairs. Bike to school. Even a movement-intensive video game like Dance Dance Revolution is a great way to break a sweat and burn some calories. (Not to mention, it’s fun, too!)

¿Qué no piensan dejar?

QUÉ NO HACER: Emitir órdenes. “¡No corras!”. “¡No hagas berrinches!”

Ten tiempo cara a cara.

Any Baby Can 6207 Sheridan Avenue Austin, TX 78723 (512) 454-3743 anybabycan.org info@anybabycan.org

¿Sentarme a llorar?

institución reconocida, en años recientes Reagan había deteriorado R h bí d i d enormemente.
