ing the birth of Christ, the annunciation of the angel to Mary, the decree of Caesar, the journey to Bethlehem, the innkeeper denying lodging, the angels proclaiming His birth to the shepherds, the manger scene, the presentation of the child to Simeon and the journey of the Magi. Members of the congregation will dress in period costumes to depict the scenes. Vehicles will line up on West Schubert Street, turn right onto Adams Street and then take another right into Bethany Lutheran Church’s back parking lot. The production has been expanded to include a lengthier drive along the woods of Town Creek, before exiting onto Austin Street. The expansion was done to accommodate more interesting elements in the nine original scenes. Excellent views are available from both sides of the vehicle, said the Rev. Casey Zesch. The event is free, although donations are accepted. Money raised from the event will be given to the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. December 30 - January 1

Walks to remember, welcome in new year By this week, Christmas and Zweite Weihnachten will be over, and the pilgrimage to stores for refunds and exchanges will be completed. As 2017 approaches, locals participate in walking events to burn off some of the calories from the holiday meal. Others make plans to go out and have fun and party to bring in the new year. For some, it’s a time to make a new year’s resolution. Memorial Walk Saturday, Dec. 31 American Volkssport Association (AVA) will host a Memorial Walk that begins between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31. Registration and the walk both can be done by that time. All walkers must be finished and off the route by 4 p.m. Headquarters for the walk is St. Joseph’s Halle at 212 West San Antonio Street. They can walk either a 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles). This is a non-competitive event and is sanctioned by the AVA. People can walk for credit or for recreation. Registration is $3 per walker. A special award this year, costing $6, will be a replica of the original award given in Fredericksburg in 1976.

Some in and outside Fredericksburg like to bring in the new year with a brisk walk. American Volkssport Association is hosting two holiday walks — a Memorial Walk from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 and then a Sunday, Jan. 1 Midnight Walk that starts at 12:01 a.m. Both will be headquartered at St. Joseph’s Halle. — Standard-Radio Post file photo

Midnight Volkssport Walk Sunday, Jan. 1 To bring in the New Year, the AVA will host a Midnight Volkssport Walk, from 11 p.m. to midnight, which will usher in Sunday, Jan. 1, beginning at St. Joseph’s Halle. Prior to the walk, a social of wine, cheese and sweets will start at 11 p.m. It is complimentary, but donations are appreciated. The walk will begin at 12:01 a.m., both 10K and 5K paths. Walkers will ring in the new year as churches around Fredericksburg ring their bells. The guided 10K walk will take participants over city streets and near some of Fredericksburg’s more colorful holiday light displays. Walkers must be done by 3 a.m. The route is suitable for strollers, but because of night visibility concerns, it is unsuitable for wheelchairs. All participants should carry flashlights. For more information about the walks, visit www.ava.org. Live entertainment There will be many live performances in Fredericksburg in the days leading up to New Year’s Eve, and then again on New Year’s Day. Check listings in the “It’s On” section (C3) of the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post for more events and musical performances.
