MEET THE COVER PHOTO COUPLE... Ricky & Abbey Photos by: Jaime Burrow Photography
W
“We met in June of 2017 at a 7-on-7 football tournament in Corpus Christi. Ricky is the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Georgetown High School where my little brother, Cooper, played QB. After a very long and hot day in the sun, Ricky made his way over to introduce himself. All I remember was looking up and thinking “OH NO! Here comes the hot coach and I am dripping with sweat.” He reached out his hand and since I was so
nervous I don’t even remember what he said after that. We had both noticed each other throughout the season and would often just wave or smile after games. After a long season of watching Coop play and keeping an eye on Ricky, Ricky made the first move and messaged me on Instagram. In November, we went on our first date and the rest is history. I will forever be thankful that Coop introduced me to the love of my life. Here’s to many more
7-on-7 tournaments and football games supporting the hot coach! Ricky worked really hard to surprise me and he actually pulled it off. His sister is getting married in April, so we were spending the weekend at their lake house for her bachelorette party. I was told that we were going to take sister and family pictures Saturday morning before the rest of the girls got there and I would need to dress up.
Friday night, once we got settled in, we started decorating and little did I know I continued on page 15
ENGAGEMENT STORY
A
Adam and Katie met in September 2016 while working together at San Antonio Military Medical Center. Adam was on a surgery rotation during residency interview season, and Katie was in her first year of pediatric residency. Adam shyly introduced himself to the confident red-headed resident and they had an undeniable attraction to each other, despite being dressed in their military camo uniforms every day!
As the month continued, they would find common interests that formed the foundation of any successful relationship: adventure, spontaneity and most importantly... tacos. As they continued to get to know each other, Katie really hoped that Adam would come to San Antonio for his residency the following year. On St. Patrick’s Day 2017, the luck of the Irish was with Adam as he received the news that he matched into his top residencontinued on page 8

continued from page 7 cy choice of general surgery in San Antonio. Katie and Adam were ecstatic to begin their lives together in the same location and have fallen in love over and over again every day since he rightfully returned to become a Texan. Adam is originally from the local area, while Katie is from Northern Virginia.
There are a few things you do not see much of in Texas: bad BBQ, warm beer and snow. Adam had an elaborate plan to ask for Katie’s hand in marriage, but as the date drew nearer, something spectacular took place. San Antonio received a freak snow storm, practically placing the perfect situation in front of Adam. He had already set up
multiple strands of Christmas lights outside, now all he had to do was turn them on. He convinced Katie to take a walk with him outside, to which Katie reluctantly agreed given she was already in her PJs. As they walked into the winter wonderland, the lights shined brightly through the snow and Adam got down on one knee and
asked Katie to be his lifetime adventure partner. And the rest is history!

ENGAGEMENT STORY
C
Cris and I had been dating for about five and a half years before we got engaged on September 15th, 2017 in New York City. Cris’s parents invited us on a trip to New York City for a fun getaway. Little did I know, there was much more planned for the trip than I could’ve ever imagined. We started the weekend by checking into the most fabulous Nomad Hotel. Then spent the next couple of days exploring the city, eating amazing food, and just hang-

ing out enjoying our time together. On the second night of our visit we had tickets to the Dale Chihuly exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden in The Bronx. Chihuly was one of our favorite artists, so we were both excited to check it out. After a very cramped subway ride (the Yankees were playing that night) we’d finally arrived. The exhibit was breath taking to say the least. The lights of the blown glass sculptures combined with the lush greenery of the gardens

When we got home, we decided to get engagement pictures taken at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. It brought back so many fun memories of our special day in New York City. Now we’re planning our wedding with the fabulous team at Hill Country Wedding Planning and ready to tie the knot on October 20th at his family ranch.
Wedding Cake Trends
F
First, it was naked cakes. Then it was nearly-naked cakes. But now we are doing pies, donut walls, cake pops and any kind of powdered doughnuts. Think outside the box when it comes to the wedding cake or dessert for your guests. What can we say? The not-a-cake trends seem to be taking over especially for the groom’s cake. Some like to stick with the traditional cake for the bride and get that picture but why not try something different for the groom? What is his favorite dessert? It makes it a memorable experience when your guests get to indulge in something loved by the bride and groom. Many couples love the idea of a wedding cake moment…but not every couple loves cake. Another solution might be a miniature version for cutting (and frosting each other’s nose). This allows for budget to be put toward more personalized sweets—like pies, doughnuts, macaroons or...

Fall Flowers
D
Details are everything when it comes to weddings. Each little detail adds up to create the vibe and atmosphere of your special day. When it comes to flowers, you want to be sure to choose bouquets that align with your desired emotions and overall feeling of the event.
With over 400,000 flowering plant species, it can be tough to narrow down your selection. Instead of researching various flowers, simply Pinterest, Google, or even magazinehunt for pictures of bouquets that catch your attention. Quick Tips: •As with other design concepts, pastels typically feel more feminine whereas
bolder and brighter colors are more masculine and modern. For example, a soft green and white garden look makes for a more timeless combination. •Having a swatch from your bridesmaid dresses will help give the florist an idea of the colors and textures you wish to include. •If you are petite or small you may not want a massive cascading arrangement. •If your ceremony will be held in a large space like a
ballroom or cathedral, a small bouquet might seem small for the room and area. •The grand cascading bouquet is perfect if you desire flair. •A ball gown calls for a bouquet with an equally grand, impressive shape. If your gown is more slender you may want a bouquet that is smaller, as a large bouquet might hide your figure.
Kids at the Wedding
K
Kids are guests, too, and therefore they deserve to have fun at your wedding as well! Creating a space for children to hang out will prove the best of both worlds for both parents and their children. Set the table with fun items to include: • Puzzles • Coloring books and crayons • Disposable cameras to send them on a scavenger hunt • Drinks • Snacks *Why not have a children’s menu served to this table or area? Most catering companies offer a cheaper, more kid friendly menu as well. There is no reason to waste a steak dinner or lobster tail for the kids who may not enjoy it!

was actually putting up stuff that Ricky was going to use for his proposal. I was talking to his sisters and mom about how Ricky had no plan on when he was going to propose and that he needed to just do it. Well, Saturday morning we got up and went to breakfast. Ricky had been so nervous the night before that he didn’t sleep and decided to drive out to the lake house early. He was already at Horseshoe Bay when we were leaving and we most likely passed him and I had no idea. We were on our way back to take pictures when Nicole said she left
the camera at the house. She asked me to run inside and when I got to the front door I noticed an orange sticky note and I instantly knew what was about to happen. (I always leave orange sticky notes around Ricky’s house.) As I walked through the door, he had hung up every note I had written him and the pictures we had taken together. There was a trail of hearts that followed the line of notes that led out to the dock where Ricky was standing. After he proposed, he told me that he had some people that wanted to say congrats. When I turned around both of our families were standing there. It was
the best surprise and most thoughtful moment and I might add... he picked out the most perfect ring!”

Tips for Renting Items
M
• Make arrangements early to ensure that you get everything you want for your special day. Get your wish list together and nail down your items. Most businesses require a nonrefundable deposit to secure the rental items for your event. • Do your research and ask to see their inventory for dishes, tables, linens and furniture pieces. Confirm that the items are in good condition and check the reviews from previous clients as well.

• Ask for a discount if you are renting multiple items from the same place. Don’t be shy. It never hurts to ask! • Rentals are not limited to tables, chairs, tents and china. You can also rent music systems, arches, candelabras and more. If the store you chose doesn’t have what you are looking for, ask them where you might be able to get the items from and they will most likely point you in the right direction.
hair
Out with the old and in with the new. This fall we are actually seeing a few hair changes happening. As stylist, we are ready for it to say the least. Golden locks are back in fashion, no more silver and white hair ladies. The unicorn is out. We are switching it up to more natural tones. Another big change, to everyone that I have been talking out of that face fringe, I am here to reconsider. Heavy fringe is back and some fun short bobs that I must say look pretty cute.

makeup
Ok, things are getting to be a little much in the makeup world for me, personally, so I will pick a few things that will actually be easy and make your look pop. My “go to” this fall will be a strong lip, it always looks great with the darker colors. This can go a long way ladies and it can dress up any look. Always do a beautiful brow and nice lashes, I would just keep it simple on the eyes since we are doing a strong lip. And voila, you are ready for fall.
clothing
The oversized trench is in. However in this area good luck finding a day to pull it off. Personally, I will dumb it down and wear many oversized sweaters and sweatshirts. Praise God I’m over the moon for this look because it is easy and comfy and so fun to wear. We are seeing patterns for days, just find the right fit for your look or personality and it will be perfect. Boots, boots and more boots! And we are done, how easy was that?!

Money Saving Tip
Have reserved seating signs ready to use for the close family at a wedding, it makes it clearer for guests on what tables may not be avaliable and will avoid the awkwardness of someone having to ask them to move.
Want to put your wedding nest egg toward a down payment on a house? Consider opening a certificate of deposit (CD), especially if you’re not planning to buy for a few years. CDs tend to offer higher interest rates than savings accounts— and since you can’t touch the money for a set period of time, it’s useful if you’re usually tempted to tap into your savings for more immediate needs.

Miraculous matrimony of the fittest, or is it? One of the biggest, most memorable days of your life is just around the corner. Are you ready? Are you feeling your best? Are you mentally and physically ready? The spotlight and possibly several hundred wide eyes will be checking you out from head to toe, for what may feel like the most magical, royal day of your life. For most brides and grooms, this can bring about a lot of unwanted anxiety and stress, so start your fitness journey sooner than later. Exercise stimulates your brain health by releasing “happy feelings” called endorphins, therefore, decreasing two major pre-wedding woes: anxiety and stress. While brides and grooms aspire to look their finest for their big day, it’s not realistic to think it will happen overnight. Each party should create a healthy and sustainable lifestyle they can maintain together for the rest of their life. Exercise in general will help with weight loss, building muscles, strengthening the cardiovascular system, reducing chronic disease, and improving quality of sleep. Couples that exercise together have felt a deeper emotional connection in achieving fitness goals, quality time, and improved sex life. Walking, running and hiking are great ways to connect and get that routine going. Step up your game with a boot camp that you both can be successful in together. Creating a positive foundation for a budding healthy marriage is essential. Looking to lose a few pounds before the wedding? Remember, regular exercise and proper nutrition go hand and hand. Make small nutrition changes each week. Consider reducing your vises down to three a week,

CHANGING YOUR NAME
J
Just because you have a marriage license with your new last name, doesn’t mean you’ve officially changed your name. (If you thought the wedding was the hard part, wait until you see the lines at the social security office and DMV.) Rather do it the old-school way? Follow these steps: 1. Get your marriage license. Before you can change your name, you’ll need the original (or certified) marriage license with the raised seal and your new last name on it. Call the clerk’s office where your license was filed to get copies if one wasn’t automatically sent to you. 2. Change your Social Security card. Visit the Social Security Administration’s website and fill out the application for a new Social Security card. You’ll keep the same number—just your name will be different. Mail in your application to the local Social Security Administration
32
FALL 2018
office. You should get your new card within 10 business days. 3. Change your license at the DMV. Take a trip to the local Department of Motor Vehicles office to get a new license with your new last name. Bring every form of identification you can get your hands on—your old license, your certified marriage license and, most importantly, your new Social Security card. 4. Change your bank accounts. This one’s a biggie, especially if you’re setting up a joint bank account, or if you have one already set up. The fastest way to change your name at your bank is to go into a branch location, bringing your new driver’s license and your marriage license. You should request new checks and debit and credit cards on top of changing the name attached to your accounts. Something to note: You might get hit with fees for requesting a new debit card.
hillcountryweddingsmagazine.com
5. Fill in the blanks Once you have a social security card and driver’s license in your married name, other changes should be easy. Some places only require a phone call; others may ask for a copy of your marriage certificate or social security card. Be sure to notify: • Employers/payroll • Post office • Electric and other utility companies • Credit card companies • Schools and alumni associations • Landlord or mortgage company • Insurance companies (auto, home, life) • Doctors’ offices • Voter registration office • Investment account providers • Your attorney (to update legal documents, including your will) • Passport office • Airlines (to transfer over your miles)

I went there with my friend Anna (one of my bridesmaids), and as soon as we walked in, she said, “oh there’s my friend Pierre at the bar!”. Turns out she used to be very good friends with a girl that dated Pierre for 2 years, about 9 years ago.

Pierre’s birthday is the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day, and I had arranged to take him out for dinner at The George on Collins. He suggested we get a nice photo out the front before we go in. So, we asked a nice passerby if they could please take a photo for us. He then turned to me and proposed. The lady taking our photo, switched it to video mode, so we have both photos and videos of the gorgeous moment.
THE WEDDING...
I was always very clear about what I wanted, and Pierre likes my taste, so he trusted me in choosing everything. As we only got engaged in February, and our wedding was August, we decided on things very quickly. The style I went with, was glamorous and a sort of antique feel. The George Ballroom where our reception was, is simply stunning, so not much needed to be done to the room. We had simple garlands down the centre of the long tables, and arrangements around the welcome sign, seating chart, bar and wedding cake. I did find all of the planning incredibly stressful at times, as I was doing everything by myself. It is like a full-time job! So much coordinating, and of course every bride wants it to all go perfectly, so the stress of that all adds up.
Our ceremony was on the balcony of the Melbourne Town Hall. I loved the columns, and I found it in keeping with the style of The George Ballroom. I really wanted everything to flow nicely. We had exactly 100 guests. We wanted only our closest friends and family there. I suppose the only thing considered unusual was that our wedding was very bitter sweet for us. My beautiful older brother had taken his own life only 3 weeks prior to our wedding, so it was incredibly difficult, and when it first happened, I couldn’t even comprehend the thought of a wedding. But I like to think he was there, shining down on us. It was also the only day that week of really beautiful weather (for the middle of August!), and I like to think that was Michael’s doing. Our reception was at The George Ballroom in St Kilda, with 100 guests. The George is simply amazing. It is by far the most beautiful venue I think I have seen in Melbourne. The way they have restored it is so divine, it was the perfect setting for our wedding day. I tried to stick with a glamorous, old world sort of theme. I was adamant about there being no black, and there wasn’t any at all. Everything was white, cream, soft pinks and rich, deep pinks. The florist really outdid herself! The cutlery, the napkins, everything just worked exactly the way I had hoped it would. My gown was designed and made by Tanya Didenko Bridal Couture. I have dealt with Tanya for 3 years now. She has made me some stunning dresses to wear to various events over the past few years, so it was a no brainer that I would go to her for my wedding dress. I went to her with photos of different designs that I liked, and took inspi-

Five Reasons
to Hire a Professional Wedding Officiant
A 2 A wedding officiant is often overlooked in the grand scheme of wedding planning. The budget gets put towards the vendors that you want on your wedding day, but what about the one vendor that you need? While it is true almost anyone can go online and become legally able to marry you but if you’re not going to hire an amateur DJ or photographer, why hire an amateur officiant?
They understand that your wedding day is a huge deal! They know that going in and they are not going to suddenly get cold feet as the day gets closer. If something goes wrong, your friend won’t have a backup that can cover them at the last moment- but a professional will. If your officiant can’t make it, you won’t be able to get married!
A professional wedding officiant dedicates their time to you as a couple from the day you meet to the day your marriage license is signed- and further! It is their job and their livelihood on the line and they know their reputation relies on their reliability. There isn’t another job that takes priority, they are here to help you make your ceremony perfect.
They know how to collaborate with other vendors on the day. Many of the responsibilities overlap at your ceremony and a professional officiant understands how all aspects of your wedding day work. The officiant has to work with the DJ, photographer and wedding planner to ensure everything runs smoothly.

If something goes wrong, the training and experience that a professional officiant offers can be the difference between an uncomfortable situation and a memorable one. Whether it’s an overbearing guest, a technical difficulty or a loud child, a professional officiant can take it in their stride and keep the ceremony on track.
5
A professional officiant works for you! You don’t have to answer to them or change your vision of what your ceremony will be. A family member may have their own idea of what they think should be said and it can be hard to say no to them, while a longtime church official may be bound by a certain doctrine that doesn’t resonate with your beliefs. A professional officiant is only bound by the law and your vision.
Your wedding officiant is there for more than reading a 20-minute script, you are entrusting them with your love story to share with your family and friends and to start your marriage. Their training and experience can make your ceremony into the memorable and love-filled experience that it deserves to be.

How to prepare for your Bridal Hairstyle
T
They use to tell you to not wash your hair before a style or wedding style however these days all the soft loose wave looks really work best with clean hair. Rain on Wedding Da
S
So have you ever heard the saying “rain on your wedding day is good luck”? When it’s raining on your special day do you raining rreally eally think that? Marriage is like the weather, you will have ups and downs and managing a different path than what was planned so why not start it off compromising and coming up with a plan B if needed? The saying that rain on your wedding day is good luck is because it signifies that your marriage will last. As you know,
a knot that becomes wet is extremely hard to unite – therefore, when you “tie the knot” on a rainy day, your marriage is just as hard to unravel or untie which will help keep you together. Just remember why you are getting married and that you will get to spend the rest of your life with your true love so don’t stress if the rain is coming on your wedding day, just know it’s your first obstacle to encounter as a couple and start your amazing married life together.

What are three things every couple should know about offering an open bar? By Jennifer Smith, Bartenders4you LLC. Just because you offer an open bar doesn’t mean it’s going to be a drunk fest. This is why you hire a reputable bar service that will follow all local and state alcohol laws and serve responsibly. Responsible service is the key, no matter if you are serving just beer and wine or beer, wine and liquor. Open bar is not an invitation to drink as much as you want. Open bar is not as expensive as you think, especially if you choose a venue that allows you to provide the alcohol for your guests and not have to purchase the alcohol through the venue or the venue’s in-house caterer. This will save you thousands. One of the biggest misconceptions is that beer and wine are more budget friendly to serve. This is proven to be wrong. A bottle of wine serves four glasses and an average couple will spend $10.00 a bottle, which equates to $2.50 a serving. You can purchase a name brand, mid shelf bottle of rum 1.75L for $22.98 and will get 39 mixed drinks from that bottle. That is only $.60 per drink. By adding the mixer, garnishes and cups, the total will still not even be close to $2.50 a serving. The math speaks for its self!

What does a typical open bar include? Your typical open bar should include the basics: 2-3 beer choices, 2-3 wine choices, and your basic liquors such as whiskey, bourbon, vodka, rum, gin, scotch and tequila. Basic mixers include juices, tonic, club soda, assorted sodas, and sweet and sour garnishes. With these basic ingredients, a mixologist can make hundreds of cocktails. What are some budget-friendly ways to have an open bar? Hire an independent bar company whose expertise is bartending/ mixology. Find one that allows you to purchase your own alcohol and supplies.
THE FOUR STAR DIFFERENCE: • An attitude that puts you first. • We simply focus on providing the best music entertainment in Texas. • FREE cocktail hour and dinner hour music when you hire us for your reception. • Professionalism is our trademark

Decide on a budget for alcohol and stick to it. Offer the best bar you can for what your budget allows for. The best ways to save money on your bar are to cut down on your serving time, skip cocktail hour and serve after dinner. Another way to save money is foregoing champagne toast. Let them toast with what they are already drinking. Are there any etiquette rules associated with having an open bar? Open bar should mean just that. Your guests should not have to pay for their drinks at any point including a tip. When you are hosting an open bar, you should take care of your guests and including the tip in the bar bill is a part of that. Food, music and drinks! The DJ has them dancing and the bartenders are interacting with your guests. Your bar service is the only wedding professional you will hire that will interact with your guests one-on-one multiple times throughout the night. You need to invest in the best that will not only have your best interest in heart but also keep your guests having a great, safe time.
Darďż˝ Lips
There is no greater time than fall to pull off a dark lip for your special day. It will make you stand out in all of your pictures and with all the dark beautiful colors that will surround you in the Fall season. Remember never do a heavy eye and lip, especially as a bride! You can do light shadow and dark wing if you like but stay soft on the shadowing. Try to incorporate your lip color into your flower choices if you can. We love all of the endless options from season to season but Fall is our favorite.
Seafood
Sea food trays can be absolutely top notch and look so chic, however make sure to speak with your caterer about when is the best time to place the trays out. It can be tricky to keep the trays chilled properly and looking fresh. When done correctly, it is unparalleled and taste absolutely fabulous. And did I mention - safe for your guest to eat. cont’d from page 37 ration from each of them. The groomsmen’s suits were made by Remy, who is actually Pierre’s youngest brother. He owns a bespoke tailoring business, situated in Sydney. The bridesmaids’ dresses were all designed by Love Honor. I sent them through a number of inspo shots, and they made them exactly as we had discussed, and they fit the girls perfectly. I told the lovely Nat from Foxy Evergreen, that I didn’t want standard flowers. I can’t stand your average old rose. The one flower I told her I absolutely wanted, was phalaenopsis orchids in a magenta sort of colour. And no Australian natives! All whites, soft pinks, deep pinks and lots of greenery. I like the cascading sort of look. We couldn’t have been
happier with her work. My photographer, Ramy from Ateia, was amazing. He was so easy to deal with, from start to end. I think my words to him when we first met were “no 90’s style glamour shots please!” I wanted it romantic, glamorous and fashionable, without looking dated. We chose Main Entertainment for all of our music. We found Isaac via a Google search, and he was outstanding. He has a beautiful voice, and sung live acoustics for our ceremony and during different parts of our reception. He then turned into a DJ later on in the night. I can’t recommend him highly enough. Not only is he incredibly talented, he is also a fantastic guy and great to deal with. We chose a cake from Nikos Cakes. We went for 2 different layers, one vanilla citrus
BE SMART WHEN CHOOSING A VENUE LOCATION
and one vanilla berry. We had a white rendered cake, with gold foil on the bottom and top tier. We have just left arrived in Bali for our honeymoon, for 10 days. 4 nights in Ubud, the rest in Seminyak. Last month we went to LA, NYC and Toronto as a pre-honeymoon holiday, so we could only take a short trip after the wedding, due to work commitments. The highlight of the day, was definitely when we first saw each other down the aisle, and walking down the aisle with my dear old dad. It was a beautiful moment, and one I will never forget.
My best advice is to make sure you know what you want, before you go talking to suppliers. Scour the net, Pinterest etc, for inspirtion. You need to be clear and concise, so that you don’t feel disappointed on your big day. Think about yours and your partner’s taste, and try your best to emulate that on your wedding day.
Always ask your wedding planner!! You can give them your vision and ideas and they will know the exact venues that will suit your needs. They will know venues that you never even knew existed, trust me, you will be pleasantly surprised. They can also take you to tour the select places they suggest. Not having a wedding planner is like buying a house without a realtor, just don’t do it. There are professionals for a reason, and they will actually save you money in the end.

Everlasting Lov

William Ferro and Ursula Ferro were married September 3rd, 1965 which makes 2018 their 53rd year of marriage. What an accomplishment and blessing to find your true love in life and be married for over 50 years.
W
The Ferros have lived in Houston for 35 years and they also have a second home in Comfort where they have spent time for 14 years. William worked with schools and hospitals as an architect and civil engineer. Ursula grew up in Germany and became a travel agent in Houston. Ursula is the owner of Echo Travel so, of course, now that they are both retired they can indulge their love of travel and exploration. The two were introduced by friends in College Station and Bill was impressed as she ordered two shrimp baskets and didn’t hold back or shy away from it. They dated two years and finally she married him once he finished his degree because she didn’t want to marry him without him having his degree. William and Ursula were blessed with a daughter,
Vanessa Brady. Vanessa and her husband, Keith are blessed with three children. Jack, Madison, and Payton. They live in Boerne and William and Ursula take every chance they can get to check on them and come visit their daughter and grandchildren and the family. They try to spend two weeks in Houston and two weeks in Comfort. They feel like the Boerne area is a good place to live and raise children and love that their grandchildren get to grow up here. Vanessa and her husband own Brady Lawn & Landscape in Boerne and enjoy having her parents close and getting to spend so much time with them. Their advice for new couples getting married is be to be patient with each other and show respect and tolerance as you will always have things you don’t agree on and will of course have ups and downs in the relationship.
The Ferros married September 3, 1965 have for their family. They spent their 50th wedding anniversary celebrating with friends and family at home, but they feel like celebrating a honeymoon every year also helps to rekindle the romance and relationship. They feel like the most important thing is spend-
ing time together as a family because family is everything and is very important to them. They said they get that from their Italian heritage. They think having the same interests in life also help contribute to the success of a marriage as you have lots of life adventures together.
Family is top priority for the Ferros and it shows. While interviewing them for this article and listening to them talk about their daughter and grandchildren just made both of them light up. You can really tell the joy and love they FALL 2018
