We are excited to bring you the sixth Spring/Summer issue of the premier Hill Country Weddings & Events Magazine! This is the first oﬃcal combined issue we have ever done due to the pandemic so we hope you enjoy the change. We are greatly overwhelmed with the positive response from readers of our previous issues! We are excited that we have oﬃcially made it over the six-year hump. Thank you so much for your support. We hope that you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed preparing it for you. Brenda, a Boerne native and owner of Hill Country Planning, the premier wedding and event planner in the Texas Hill Country, has over sixteen years of experience and enjoys all aspects of the industry. Brenda has dreamed of planning special events since she was little. Now that she is doing what she loves, she has decided to expand her dreams into something larger. Crystal has always had a love for fashion and style, whether it is hair and makeup or clothes and design. After doing what she loved for over fifteen years, she opened Simply Serene Salon and Spa in her hometown of Boerne, TX. She

spent years telling anyone who would listen about her fashion tips and hair trends. Hill Country Weddings & Events Magazine combines the sisters’ passions and features everything from weddings to events, style, fashion and more. Nothing could be more exciting or anticipated than a bride’s walk down the aisle! If you’re planning on tying the knot, the Texas Hill Country has proven to be an ideal location to say your I Do’s. Hill Country Weddings and Events Magazine sat down to plan for the year after the Covid-19 outbreak, as it has set us and most all wedding and event professionals in a tailspin scrambling to postpone and reschedule all the weddings and events we had in March - May and now even July. For the first time in 6 years we are combining two issues to one. The Spring 2020 magazine will be combined with the Summer For 22020 020 magazine for print as we do not want everyone missing out on any of the amazing things we have in each issue.

How to plan a wedding during the coronavirus outbreak...

You’ve said yes and now the planning begins. Getting married is a life-changing experience and we want yyour our wedding to bring you decades d ecades of memories and happiness. h appiness. Planning at a time like this is ever changing however, we have lots of vendors making the necessary adjustments in the meantime. Pictures aren’t enough for such a big decision but maybe a virtual meeting, zoom or facetime tour could help. You can stay in the comfort of your own home while having others join in on the tour as well and get a head start on what is available.

Don’t stop planning! Wedding planning is not quick and easy, and it does require months so we never want to put things oﬀ as you may also have some extra time on your hands if you are stuck at home. No one knows when this will be over however, you should plan ahead and plan on getting a wedding insurance policy just in case. Make sure you get the full details of the policy to make sure it would also provide you with the coverage you were needing.

On December 29th of 2015 Tyler was scheduled to leave for his 6 month long basic and AIT training to begin his career in the Army. Tyler and I had been set up by friends and he asked if he could take me out on a date before he was supposed to leave. Our infamous first (and only) date was on December 27th of 2015, just two days before he shipped out. Tyler drove all the way

from Fredericksburg to San Antonio to take me on a dinner and Top Golf date. What I would later find out is that he left early from his surprise going away party in Fredericksburg with friends and family to come see me. We had a blast, talked for hours, and the date was one that neither of us wanted end, especially knowing that a second would be a long ways oﬀ. I was instantly

head over heels and crushed by thought of this perfect man I had met having to leave. The first date was all it took for me to know Tyler was something special and if he felt the same way I did, he was worth waiting six months for. Two days later Tyler was shipped oﬀ to basic training and in the last moments before he

Ryan and Ana met their freshmen year at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB). It was love at first sight, and from then on, Ryan and Ana made every excuse to see each other. Sometimes it meant having study dates so they could get homework done while also being with each other. When Christmas came along, they couldn’t stand not seeing each other so they would text each other nonstop and even

wanted the break to end, unlike normal people, just so they could hang out again. Soon after returning to campus, they started dating and on St. Valentine’s Day, Ryan decided to take Ana out on their first oﬃcial date - a date where studying didn’t have to be involved. He took her to lunch first and then took her on a trip to Austin which is about an hour from UMHB. They first stopped continued on page 9

had his phone confiscated he asked for my address to possibly write me a letter. I waited anxiously wondering if he was thinking of me as continued on page 17

The next three and a half years consisted of being together during school and making the longdistance thing work for all of their school breaks since Ana would return home to Dallas and Ryan would return to Boerne.

August 1st, 2020, at D’vine Grace Vineyards in McKinney, TX, and will be enjoying a nice honeymoon in St. Lucia! They are so lucky and grateful to have both decided to go to UMHB and to have found each other! They are super excited for the next phase in their life and can’t wait to begin their happily ever after!

In March of 2019, Ryan finally popped the question in the most thoughtful and special way! He re-created their first date, and once they reached the top of Mount Bonnell, knelt on one knee and asked her to marry him; without hesitation she said YES!! After finally graduating college this past December, they are starting to plan their wedding! They will be getting married this coming

Mason and I have known each since we were teenagers. We grew up in a small town and have been best friends for over a decade. We were high school sweethearts and we attended Texas A&M together where we made so many incredible memories with family and friends. We graduated a few semesters apart and started working full-time... The night of his grandmother’s birthday, or so I thought, we were all supposed to dress up for family

pictures. Between running late and getting ready I was oblivious to everything going on. I drove to Mason’s house, which is actually on their Christmas tree farm, and finished getting ready. Mason’s dad asked us if we’d shut oﬀ the well before we headed out for the evening. We hopped on the golf cart and headed that way. After asking why we were taking a weird route through the Christmas trees several times and getting no answer, Mason pulled up to a wide walkway that was filled with canvases and flower vases. It was a walk down SPRING

our own memory lane. From our awkward middle school dances, football games, proms, college days, and graduations we laughed and reminisced on how much we’d grown. The last picture was us at Christmas and it said, “ last Christmas without a ring”. He led me under an oak tree and there next to more flowers was a small box. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and of course I said yes! Our families were hiding in the trees and came running out to congratulate us. To make it more perfect, Mason arranged for a surprise engagement party that night with our close family and friends.

Who is getting married in 2020? Now is the time for all those 90’s babies to get married. The average age of a person getting married in 2020 is 33, meaning this year most of the couples were born in the 90’s. Who didn’t love the 90’s? Velvet is on the rise in both décor and wedding attire this year. Let us not also forget about the mismatched patterns of the buffalo check and bold ﬂorals. Instagramworthy wedding details are trending big this year too. The goal is to create a wedding that feels personal but has the “I need a picture of this for social media” look. much as I was him and if I would get a letter in the mail. The day finally came and that first letter arrived, and so began three months of writing letters and us getting to know one another in a way that so few people in our generation will ever get to experience. At the end of the three months he graduated basic and was able to then use his phone for the remaining three months of training. Our relationship continued to grow through hours and hours of FaceTime calls, more letters, messages, care packages, and counting down the days till we would soon be together again for only the second time. In July of 2016 he was finally home and we began to build a relationship that only got stronger each day. In December of 2017 Tyler pulled oﬀ the greatest surprise in the world when he proposed. He told me that I was going to assist him in guiding a black buck hunt, but little did I know when we got there he would tell me that the hunt was for me and I would be getting to shoot my dream black buck. Once the hunt was over and we walked up to the animal on the ground I was convinced that I was having the best day ever and couldn’t believe he had pulled oﬀ such an incredible surprise. I admired the animal and when I excitedly turned around to look at Tyler he was down on one knee. Hunting together is such a special thing to us and I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal. If you are in the middle of wedding planning, then you have likely checked out Pinterest, Minted or have googled diﬀerent wedding stationery suite packages. The couples of 2020 have so many options now with all the papers, colors, fonts, foil press, embellishments and more. Before you buy something online or over the counter, make sure to do your research. Before you eagerly pop these fresh-oﬀthe-press paper goods in the mail, you’ll want to research everything there is to know about properly formatting all the information typically included on the invitation. With most things weddingrelated, there’s a code of conduct to follow when addressing guests, assembling pieces in a specific order, and (most importantly!) choosing a time to get the invitations in the mail. Thankfully, these must-know wedding invitation tips will help you mail your invites without a hitch. Trust us— you’ll find this cheat sheet particularly helpful with the details While these invitation customs have history, there are endless ways to make your paper suite your own but it’s important to nail down a few of the big-

ger rules to ensure that the invitations make it into your guests’ hands safe and sound. # 1 - Get organized about a month before your desired invitation send-out date. This should be six to eight weeks before the wedding, allowing your guests adequate time to respond and ensure that you will get a reliable head count at least two weeks before the event. # 2 - Decide if you need to hire a calligrapher or not. Depending on your handwriting and the level of formality of your wedding, you may want to have your envelopes inscribed by a professional calligrapher. You’ll have to get the envelopes to the calligrapher at least two to three weeks before you need them.

Just be careful with these as the cost of mailing might make a big diﬀerence as well. # 4 – Packaging has so many options as well. You can do

cont’d from page 17 very small ceremony on the Beckmann family ranch in Harper, TX on March 25th of 2018. Shortly after we married Tyler deployed to the Middle East for another long 9 months spent apart. Tyler returned home in May of 2019 and on September 7th we finally had our big dream wedding in Fredericksburg with all of our friends and loved ones. It was an absolute dream wedding held in a farmhouse style venue close to where Tyler grew up. The style was what I like to call “rustic glam”. Unlike our first ranch wedding, this time Tyler wore his formal military dress blues and I had on my DREAM rhinestone mermaid dress. The event was formal with all over the sparkle and shine of glitzy event, however a main focus in our decoration was antlers, peacock feathers, greenery, and turquoise. It truly embodied everything that we are and it could not have a more incredible or well-deserved day. SPRING

No Kids

How do you tell your “guests” no kids and not offend them? Some believe that a wedding is for adults only which others feel like it’s a family event and should involve the kids. There are however some good reasons for opting for no kids at your wedding. The budget is already tight for most weddings and sometimes just adding on the additional kids and space can save you a little bit in the funds department.

Distraction is next on the list. Although we all love our children and enjoy the time with them, imagine getting to sit there without the distraction so that you can truly hear the ceremony and engagement with what is taking place as a guest. Why not enjoy a night out as a couple or get away for the weekend with no kids for some time to yourself? The best way to let your guests know that you have chosen to the no kids rule at

Be understanding: Someone may bring it up to you that they are coming from out of town or they don’t have a sitter for that day. Let them know you absolutely love their children and wish everyone could be a part of your special day however you just don’t have it in the budget for the kids on this day.

Think of what kind of couple they are. Do they love to tailgate or hit up the beach or maybe need some fun camping gear? Do they like to spend their time fishing or hunting and would enjoy a weekend trip later down the line? Find out their hobbies and what they enjoy and how you could help them to spend a memorable time after the wedding day stress.

Wedding gift etiquette says a guest should spend from $70 to $250 depending on if you are going solo or with a significant other. The closer you are with the couple you may choose to spend more. Ingredients • 2 oz. silver tequila • 1 oz. Cointreau • 1 oz. lime juice • coarse salt Directions Chill a cocktail glass, and then rub the rim with lime juice and dip it in coarse salt. ADVICE FROM A PLANNER OR WEDDING VENDOR

The world and the wedding and event industry have never experienced anything like COVID-19 before and we are all navigating our way through it. We have all been seeing lots of posts from couples who were ready to get married and who are now having to make some changes. Some of the posts reveal that the couples and families are upset and confused about why their vendors will not fully refund them non-refundable deposits and payments. We want to help shed some light on this issue for everyone as we all go through these hard times together. We want to first note that the COVID-19 virus is not forcing anyone to cancel their wedding. It is putting restrictions on some wedding plans, such as venues, so the couple may want to consider their options in postponing or rescheduling their wedding date. Some venues, for example, are having to decrease the number of guests, and maybe your out of town guests can no longer

come to the wedding. If a couple decides to cancel their wedding all together because of this pandemic, that is a choice they are making. We completely understand the frustration on both sides: the client’s and the small business owners. We want to help explain the vendor’s view, such as keeping the non-refundable deposits or payments. Every single wedding vendor is stuck in a hard spot now because we are trying to take the pandemic into consideration, but we are also trying to keep our businesses open as well. This crisis is no one’s fault. As a wedding planner I have extremely limited dates available for the year, and same goes for venues. There are only 52 weekends in a year. Most people do not want weekday weddings, and our inventory may be limited. Some vendors may be able to book multiple weddings on one date, but venues, planners, and others are extremely limited in our supply of

dates. When you booked the wedding date – that venue or planner reserved the date for you and no one else. In turn, we more than likely turned away other business and money to keep that date for your event, since, of course you signed the contract and paid the non-refundable deposit and costs. Look at it as inventory - if there is no more inventory (dates) for other couples then there is no money coming in. Suddenly, vendors don’t have just one or two cancellations or rescheduled events. I know for us that March – May is 50% of our income for the year - which of course is when the COVID-19 virus hit. This is not play money for us (we of course LOVE our jobs) however. This income pays for our oﬃce, mortgage, internet, telephone and other expenses. Let us not forget about our employees as well- it is certainly a disaster. Most of the vendors, in our experience, are being flexible and rescheduling for clients

as best as possible. Some are not charging any fees, and some must charge minimal fees. Keep in mind these businesses are going to be barely scaping by. Not only did the vendor just lose out on the date for you, but they are rescheduling and losing another precious date on the books as well. We know this pandemic is beyond your control and you probably feel frustrated, anxious, angry, and helpless. Please remember that the vendors feel the same and we are all losing out. What we are asking for all is to compromise and cooperate during this situation and let us focus on the good. If we work together we can get through this challenging time together. There is no right or wrong in this situation. At the end of the day, you will be married and you will have a story of a lifetime!

MOTHER OF THE GROOM DUTIES

Historically speaking, the mother of the groom’s “role” was to sit back, relax and show up on wedding day. Fast forward to today and it’s safe to say the rules have been nixed. It’s a good idea for the mother of the groom to touch base with the mother

of the bride to find out what they feel is actually wanted and/or needed. This helps to make sure no one is stepping on someone else’s toes in the process. The future mother-in-law is normally responsible for the rehearsal dinner plans, but it might be fun to have her

How did you and your partner meet? We met online… not on Tinder! Camille’s profile picture included a dinosaur, which ended up being one of the themes in our wedding. Glenn loved how different it was and started chatting about difficulties and impracticalities of pooper and scoopering after such a large pet. Camille thought it was a gusty move to talk about…poo … so soon, so after many hours chatting and joking we went for a coffee date at a local café. The coffee date turned into lunch and would have turned into dinner if we both didn’t have other obligations. How did he propose? We went for a bushwalk in our favourite spot and while I was distracted by baby birds, he started rustling loudly in his pocket for something. I turned around and said in an annoyed voice “What have you got in your pocket?”. He grinned and pulled a ring out of a plastic bag, got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.

What’s your most important piece of advice for creating and maintaining a strong relationship? We support each other through the hard times and make time for fun. Tell us about your wedding gown and how you chose it: I didn’t want to try the gown on, and my bridesmaids made me. I then didn’t want to ever take it off! What sort of style did you envision for your wedding day? A colorful festival feel, nice and relaxed but with lots of fun. What was your favourite moment from the day? Coming back from taking photos, the sun had just gone down and as we were approaching the reception listening to the sounds of our guests laughing and talking. At this moment we were surrounded by fireflies and had an amazing moment together reveling in the magic of our wedding day. She has traveled extensively and has worked as a regional makeup artist for such iconic brands as Estée Lauder, Smashbox, and Benefit cosmetics. My favorite is dep sea fishing and it is recognized as one of the most populated fishing grounds in the Caribbean! Don’t forget to try out the Caribbean cuisine while there, such as Orlando’s, Petit Peak and many more. St. Lucian cuisine dishes include local ingredients from farmers and fishermen. My go to this Spring and Summer has been a charcuterie board. Who does not love meat, cheeses, and fruit? It also makes for a perfect healthy and keto/Atkins option as well. This is our go to for a summer campout, pool day snacks or midday snack. We of course change up the board with diﬀerent chesses, meats, fruits and nuts to make it seem just a little diﬀerent each time however, the adults and kids enjoy this snack all summer long. For Dinner Hot summer days and endless nights calls for a casual relaxed meal. If your family is anything like mine, you are looking for a quick, convenient meal to serve your hungry family after a day in the sun.

Ingredients: • • • •

4 tomatoes, quartered • cucumber, chopped • red onion, sliced thinly • 1/8 cup, olive oil (or more, to taste)

Toss veggies in a medium-sized bowl, drizzle olive oil and vinegar on top. Add salt and pepper as desired. Stir to mix veggies in dressing. Best with pizza!

Post Wedding and Honeymoon To-Do List Your honeymoon was just what you needed after your long-anticipated needed wedding day. But what do you need wedding to do now that your honeymoon is over? DEAL WITH THE DRESS If you plan on keeping your wedding dress, you’ll need to preserve it as soon as possible. After all, it was an investment! To preserve the dress professionally, contact a gown preservation specialist. If you would simply like to store your gown at home, keep it in a cool, dry closet space inside. Be sure this space is climate controlled. THANK YOU Once you’re home, take an evening to go through all the gifts and cards with your new spouse. Be sure to keep a running list of who gave what, so that you can send a thank you note to each of them. If you have any duplicates, make returns or exchanges as soon as possible. CHANGE YOUR NAME Changing your name after the wedding is no simple task and requirements vary from state to state, so research before you start the process. Usually the first task is to change your name at the Social Security Administration. You’ll also need to update your driver’s license and passport, as well as the HR department at your workplace. Don’t forget to update your bank accounts, credit cards, utility accounts, rental agreements, and insurance policies as well.

PRINT WEDDING PHOTOS Once you receive the wedding photos from your photographer, get them printed and in a photo album. It will be worth it when you’re able to thumb through all your photos on your first anniversary! If you don’t do it right away you will never get it done. TALK MONEY Now that you’re home, it’s time to get all the gritty financial details worked out if you haven’t already. 1. Create a wedding hashtag and share it from the start. It should be promoted on all wedding marketing materials like your invitations, website, etc., as well as throughout the venue. We even recommend using it to capture content from your bachelorette party, rehearsal dinners and more. You can search the hashtag

after the wedding and see all the content that guests created and shared across platforms. 2. Design Instagram-worthy photo opportunities that inspire guests to whip out their camera (or phone!) and snap some shots. Everyone loves a good photo op these days.

3. Create an entirely new Instagram account just for your wedding photos - a digital photo diary of sorts! 4. Build “collaboration albums” where friends and guests can drop photos and share content.

Everlasting Love

I absolutely love sitting down with couples that have been married for years. I crave the inside scoop on how they’ve made their marriage last and hope to share their tips with our newlyweds getting married. For this issue specifically, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Bob and Jerri Gruber – a beautiful couple that tied the knot May 28th, 1960. 60 years – how fabulous is that?! Robert (who goes by Bob) Gruber grew up as the middle child with three brothers. His mom and dad were married for 47 years (only because his dad passed away at 94 and mom was 91). Jeraldine (Jerri) has 3 sisters (4 girls, wow) and her parents were married for 66 years – yes 66 years!! When I sat with Bob and Jerri to find out how they met they said, “Over a loaf of bread and gallon of milk.” Bob worked at a small drivein grocery store and went to get a loaf of bread and gallon of milk for his mom when he ran into a school friend that was dating Jerri’s roommate. When they met, Bob said he knew that Jerri was a good

woman and naturally, they started dating. Jerri said Bob was a Catholic boy and she just knew he was a good one too. After only 3 months, Bob gave Jerri a ring and asked her to marry him. A couple months later, he took the ring back – his dad told him he was too young to get married and it was too fast. They still remained dating and in December at her Christmas party, Bob gave the ring back to Jerri and they married shortly after. Bob was going to college at UT and then went into the service for 2 years in Alaska. When he came back, he finished up school at the University of Houston. Bob’s career was started just after college when he did a short time at Goodyear in sales before quitting. He then had a friend with a with a double drive-in grocery store who oﬀered him a partnership. Bob’s dad loaned him a little money at 10% interest (yes, 10% back then was good incentive for both of them). Bob went on to purchase many more properties and restaurants. It was as if everywhere he turned something amazing fell into his lap and he became an extraordinarily SPRING

successful entrepreneur in real estate, restaurants and more. It appears every location and restaurant that Bob and Jerri opened was successful right away. Bob was ordering, purchasing and doing behind the scenes work, while Jerri was hostess, bartender, bookkeeper and much more. They worked hard in all their businesses and did a great job before retiring in 1996. They moved to Mexico for a while and loved it there, but due to some health concerns they decided to come back to Texas. Bob and Jerri have two girls, Tammy and Donna. Tammy has a son named Robert Wayne and Donna has a daughter named Sarah. Bob and Jerri just could not stop talking about how amazing their kids and grandchildren are. I love watching a couple answer questions about what they have done in life, their children and grandchildren. It was so fun meeting with

Bob and Jerri. They welcomed me in just as family would. It was too cute to watch them as they completed each other’s sentences as they spoke, or Bob would look to Jerri to fill in the dates and names of places. Bob and Jerri’s advice to keep a long-lasting marriage is to know when to keep your mouth shut (they both laughed when saying this). A marriage is full of giving and taking—and sometimes you just need to stay quiet. As far as business goes, the couple shared that what goes around, comes around. If you work with great people and stay honest, it will come back around to you. As they are retired now, Jerri enjoys bowling and genealogy and Bob enjoys golf and hunting. Together they enjoy their family and grandkids. Congrats to Bob and Jerri on 60 years of marriage and thank you for the inspiration and joy through sharing your love story!
