Homer Marquez/Plainview Herald Construction crews move to the sunlight at Covenant Health Plainview as renovation and expansion work moves outdoors.

“Since the visible signs of demolition of the area, that will be the expansion of the James and Eva Mayer surgery center, began, the buzz has been building. You can visualize the structure, and it is exciting,â€? said Covenant Health Plainview CEO Clay Taylor as he commented on the ÂżUVW SKDVH RI H[SDQVLRQ IRU WKH 3ODLQYLHZ Hospital. Thanks to a $40 million renovation and improvement project, Plainview and the surrounding area will basically be getting a brand new hospital as the project will touch almost every piece of the facility. In the works for the past three years, the project began construction in January 2015, as crews began the initial phases of renovations in the hospital’s basement. Now work has moved outdoors with the expansion of the surgery center. “Over the past several months, much of the underground work was done, paving the way for visible signs of progress that began in late summer,â€? Taylor said. In late July, construction started on Phase one of the project which will feature the 11,000 square-feet expansion of the James and Eva Mayer Surgery Center and upgrades to the central plant. “Phase 1 (the Operation Room expansion and Central Plant upgrades) is ex-

pected to be a 14-month project to be complete late summer or early fall 2016,â€? Taylor said. Central plant renovations will also include a completely remodeled Emergency Department to go along with the new surgical suites, patient’s rooms and family areas. The surgery expansion will see a completely reorganized wing with renovated pre-operation capabilities, four additional surgical suites and an improved recovery area. What did I ever do to my gallbladder? It was Saturday, and my husband Dave and I had driven into Plainview from Kress, where we live, to do some shopping. Afterwards, we went out to lunch, and I ate normally, though I wasn’t very hungry, which is unusual. We went home and I took a nap, then woke up feeling cranky. I did some housework, but my stomach area became increasingly painful, all around my midsection and a little way XS P\ EDFN $IWHU DERXW ÂżYH hours of this, Dave drove me to the emergency room at Covenant Hospital Plainview. Someone helped me go through the sign-in forms, and I was examined in a fairly short time. On a pain scale chart, I said I was in the 9-10 range. The pain kept me from focusLQJ DQG , KDG GLɤFXOW\ VSHDNing clearly. I had a blood test and a CT scan, which showed that my JDOOEODGGHU ZDV LQĂ€DPHG DQG my potassium levels were a little low. After that, they moved me into a room and started an IV drip. I expected that the morphine would put me to sleep, but it simply reduced the pain to a manageable level, between 3 and 4, and I was more alert. I was told that antibiotics might UHGXFH WKH LQĂ€DPPDWLRQ EXW they scheduled me for an ultrasound to be sure. The following morning Dave watched the screen as the radiologist performed the abdominal ultrasound. “Looks like a gravel pit in there,â€? she said cheerfully. My husband later used the term “rock quarry.â€? I didn’t see the picture myself – but then, I never asked. The question I have been pondering since is why me? According to the National In-

stitutes of Health, about 10-15 percent of people in the United States have gallstones, but had I done anything that might have caused the attack? Web MD says the gallbladder is a small pouch that sits just under the liver. In response to signals, the gallbladder squeezes stored bile into the small intestine through a series of tubes called ducts. Bile helps digest fat, but the gallbladder itself is not essential. However, diarrhea and fat malabsorption may occur once it is removed. Being a woman has something to do with having gallstones. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, gallstones can occur in 20 percent of women over the age of 60. Women between the ages of 20 and 60 years are three times more likely to develop gallstones than men. I am 60 years old, but I know people who have had gallstones much earlier. My best friend had her gallbladder removed at age 24. Heredity has something to do with it. My father had his gallbladder removed in 1975 when he was 59. I am of Northern European heritage. A study on the Up to Date website from 2014 shows that Hispanics and Northern Europeans have a higher risk for gallstones than do people of Asian and African descent. However, studies vary, and some say that Hispanics have a higher risk for gallstones. Many websites say that Native Americans have the highest risk for gallstones in the United States population. Being overweight is a risk factor, and I have recently been dieting to move myself from the “overweight to the “normal range on the BMI

scale. This would seem to be a good, healthy thing to do, except that Web MD states that rapid weight loss and a very low-fat diet can also be factors in developing gallstones. My weight loss was neither rapid, nor was my diet extremely low-fat. Nevertheless, diet may have been a factor. Taking hormone replacement pills after menopause or high-dose birth control pills is another possible factor. I take hormone replacement pills. My exercise goal is 150 minutes a week, and I generally make or exceed that amount, so lack of exercise is not a problem. Also, I don’t take cholesterol-lowering medication, considered to be a factor by Web MD. Sunday morning, June 28, after the ultrasound, they removed my gallbladder using a laparoscopic procedure. The following morning I was released from the hospital. I was left with four tiny incision marks, which have now nearly disappeared. I realize how blessed I am to live in an age and a place where gallbladder surgery is less invasive than previously and mostly routine. I eat nutritiously, though not perfectly, and have resumed my walking and Zumba schedules, so that I hardly know that I’ve had my gallbladder removed. I also followed up with

my doctor to make sure everything was going well. According to the Mayo Clinic website: Gallstones may cause no signs or symptoms. If a gallstone lodges in a duct and causes a blockage, signs and symptoms may result, such as: - Sudden and rapidly in tensifying pain in the center of your abdomen, just below you breastbone - Back pain between your shoulder blades - Pain in your right shoulder Gallstone pain may last several minutes to a few hours. The website advises that you should: Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any signs or symptoms that worry you, and seek immediate care if you develop signs and symptoms of a serious gallstone complication, such as: - Abdominal pain so intense that you can’t VLW VWLOO RU ¿QG D comfortable position - Yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes - High fever with chills BY GAIL M. West Texas Family Medicine begins primary construction for new clinic Photo By Homer Marquez Plainview Herald Removing the store front of the former Gebo’s building, West Texas Family Medicine has begun the construction of their new clinic located in the Running Water Draw Shopping Center.

onstruction is booming in Plainview.

And one of the biggest projects on the horizon is the expansion of Plainview’s West Texas Family Medicine clinic which is poised to open its second location at the beginning of 2016. “So far everything is mostly on schedule. We are still expecting the end of February or early March for completion of the entire project,â€? said Human Resources Director at West Texas Family Medicine, Phil Richards. Last year, the clinic purchased the former Gebo’s building, located at 1605 W. Fifth, in Plainview. The new location would add some much needed breathing room for the clinic’s location at 1806 Quincy St. which Richards said was “packed to the gillsâ€?. “The day to day stresses of moving this project along is worth the excitement we have about having the ability now to provide more adequate medical care for the Plainview community,â€? Richards said. In late August, architects and developers started the initial renovation phase of the SURMHFW ZKLFK LQFOXGHG WHDULQJ RÉŁ WKH VWRUH-

front of the 18,000 square-feet building. “On a daily basis, we hear about people asking or talking about the new building. We will be working on the shell of the building, such as the roof and missing walls to enclose the space. Then we will be able to start on putting in the interior walls,â€? Richards said. Most services the clinic will provide at the new location is still undetermined as West Texas Family Medicine is continuing to negotiate with potential medical partners. +RZHYHU WZR VLJQLÂżFDQW DVSHFWV WKDW ZLOO EH RÉŁHUHG DW WKH QHZ :7)0 ORFDWLRQ will be a digital X-ray machine and a “Life Style Centerâ€?. “One upgrade will be our digital X-ray. This will allow seamless communication between all our facilities,â€? Richards said. “The biggest upgrade we have is the development of our “Life Style Centerâ€? or cosmetic medical services. This will include, but is not limited to, Botox injections, laser hair removal, sun spot treatment, tattoo removal, and many other

services. If you are not a fan of needles, we have a new system that reduces wrinkles and tightens the skin without injections.â€? WTFM is also considering possibly building an in-house pharmacy and an urgent care clinic. “Our primary care providers—the doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners—will be providing most of the VHUYLFHV WKDW ZH DOUHDG\ RÉŁHU DV ZHOO DV some of the additional services we are upgrading. As for the nursing and reception VWDÉŁ ZH ZLOO EH ORRNLQJ WR KLUH VWDÉŁ DURXQG the start of the new year,â€? Richards said. With all the improvements and additions, the doctors at WTFM are excited on how the new location will upgrade Plainview’s overall health care district. “With the increasing number of patients we have on a day to day basis, we feel the H[WUD Ă€RRU VSDFH DQG DGGLWLRQDO KRXUV ZLOO EHQHÂżW WKH FRPPXQLW\ LQ VKRUWHU ZDLW times and more services provided by the patient’s primary care physician,â€? Richards said. Since opening its doors nearly six years ago, WTFM has quickly grown to include clinics in not only Plainview, but Hale Center and Floydada.

Keeping it Casseroles To Go fresh with For the past 16 years, Janet Smith’s dedication to fresh and wholesome food has provided Plainview with a healthy option during the lunch hour rush and evening dinner call. “It just makes you feel better, said Smith, owner of Casseroles To Go, as she explained her commitment to using all natural ingredients in her menu. Not a neurotypical leader: Phyllis Wall talks about her Asperger’s diagnosis Throughout Plainview, it is hard to mention a recent community project without hearing the name of Phyllis Wall mentioned. The renovation of the Hilton Hotel, Snack Pack 4 Kids, the Skate Park and many other events and projects are associated with her name. In the past, she has served as executive director of Literacy Council as well as interim executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
