Dripping Springs
BY JOHN PACHECO

ripping Springs was settled in 1854 by three families--the Pound, Wallace, and Moss families--who traveled by covered wagons, and probably made their way into the area via a road used to carry supplies to an army fort in Fredericksburg. Upon being appointed postmaster for the area, John Moss named the community Dripping Springs. In the 1920s, a second wave of migration hit the area, and after a failed attempt to transform Dripping into cotton farming, the town settled down into a mostly ranching community. In the 1930s and 40s, William Price Crow, the owner of the local grocery and hardware store at the time, began a warehouse to buy and store wool and mohair. Crow also established the Dripping Springs Water Supply Corporation, which 6
helped quench some of the area’s water infrastructure issues. The community remained largely agricultural well into the 1970s, but it incorporated in 1981 to prevent being annexed by Austin into its extraterritorial jurisdiction. Until not so very long ago, Dripping Springs was a genuinely rural community. In the 1980s and much of the 90s. It was simply understood that a forty-minute drive to the nearest H-E-B, or an hour to the nearest hospital, was part of the bargain. Today Dripping is under-

going dramatic growth as a new wave of residents and businesses change the formerly one-stoplight sleepy town. Demographic studies conducted for the school district show that Dripping Springs residents have the second highest average income in the Austin area (at $107,413 per year), are highly educated (55 percent have at least a four year college degree.) The largest employment sector in the area is now professional, VFLHQWLĂ€F DQG PDQDJHPHQW These three professions now account for a full eighteen-percent, whereas agriculture, which dominated the area for more than a hundred years, now comprises less than one percent of the workforce.

Hamilton Pool Preserve Hamilton Pool Preserve is legendary and unique in its beauty, a jewel of the Hill Country. Thousands of years ago, when the dome of an underground river collapsed and formed the pool and grotto, it also created a huge natural waterfall. But swimming the grotto is just part of its wonder. The centerpiece of the preserve is 45-foot waterfall, and there are short trails for hiking. Reservations are required to swim. Please call to see what is the status of the park’s facilities. The sounds of the falls, birds, the river rushing past, all just 18 miles from Dripping Springs. Pristine and natural are the words that could closest describe the preserves’ natural state and the beauty found there. Westcave got its name from early settlers who called it West Caves, because the caves were west of the Pedernales River. A 125 ft. hike down to the bottom of the canyon will reward you with lower temperatures and dense tropical foliage at the entrance to the cave, and all this is just a few miles from Dripping Springs. Dripping Springs Independent School District
L
ocated about 20 miles west of Austin on U.S. 290, the Dripping Springs Independent School District (DSISD) is a IDVW JURZLQJ GLVWULFW WKDW IHDWXUHV ÀYH VFKRROV with two more opening this year. The schools are Dripping Spring High School, Dripping Springs Middle School, and three elementary schools: Dripping Springs Elementary, Rooster Springs and Walnut Springs. There is also an elementary school and middle school opening in August 2017 at the Sycamore campus. At the present time the student population is approximately 6,000 and growing at a rate of 6 to 7% per year. They will be opening two
new schools, Sycamore Springs Elementary and Middle School, both under the same roof but in an innovative design that keeps the two schools separate. The tax rate for the district is at $1.52 per $100 of property value. The DSISD is a District of Innovation, labeled by the state where a “local school district may want to SXUVXH VSHFLÀ F LQQRYDWLRQV in curriculum, instruction, governance, parent or community involvement,
school calendar, budgeting, or other areas… Each innovation plan is expected to be unique to each school district, allowing for local values and goals to be incorporated into the plan,” according to the DSISD website. DSISD students outperform other districts in the state on every test by huge margins, and achieve Advanced Performance ratings at a high rate. They truly live up to their Mission Statement. “We partner with students, parents and the community to provide a personalized and exceptional education for every student.”
Superintendent Bruce Gearing joined DSISD in 2012 and previously was superintendent of Marshall ISD and Assistant Superintendent at Mount Pleasant ISD. His academic background is a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa), a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University-Texarkana, and a Doctor of Educational Administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He and his wife have four children. 30

NEW STADIUM! Tiger Stadium is back and better than ever as the new facility is open for the football season. The previous stadium held 4,226 seats total. The new stadium has 7,734 seats. There is also a reserve seat section of 1,334 that will have chair backs. The stadium has a state of the art press box and a concession area on both the home and visitor side. The best thing about the new facility, though, is the fact that it is located at the high school, which will allow for much easier use compared to the old facility.
