The chapel is an 1880s Catholic church that was about to be demolished in Vietnam in favor of a more modern building. A campanile was then added to hold a 19th Century French bell to signal happy events at Camp Lucy. For corporate retreats, or meetings, an events hall is available. The event hall is a “repurposed Amish barn originally built from hand-hewn white oak timers in Ohio in the 1800s,â€? according the camp’s guide. The sprawling property is also conducive for in-between meeting walks and provides areas where people can break off into their own smaller meetings. In addition, the property also has a ceremony site with a sweeping view, and a rehearsal dinner building that is nestled by Onion Creek. For the traveler or wedding planner seeking something out of the ordinary, Camp Lucy is an exciting choice.

If you’re craving something besides the usual burger or steak, or have an adventurous palette, try the venison meatloaf over at Homespun Kitchen and Bar. DRINK
Have a drink in Dripping Springs Dripping Springs is uncommon in that there are all three types of adult beverage choices within a stone’s throw of each other: wineries, distilleries and breweries. Visitors doing a wine tour of the area need not limit themselves to wine; depending on their tastes, they can also sample bourbon, vodka, gin, rum and micro-brews in a variety of venues, all with the unique Dripping Springs friendliness and ambiance. Many of the venues are family owned.
Treaty Oak Brewing & Distilling Treaty Oak founder Daniel Barnes is a former sommelier who named his company after the majestic 500 year old oak where, according to folklore, Texas founding father Stephen F. Austin signed a border agreement with local Native Americans. Barnes says he wanted the name to “symbolize the strength and longevity” of his products. Barnes started by experimenting with 200 recipes of rum, and introduced KLV Á DJVKLS 7UHDW\ Oak Rum in 2007. Today, that spirit for exploring and

creating new recipes in spirits continues to drive innovation of the various rums, vodkas, gin, bourbon whiskey and beer offered at Treaty Oak. While varied, they all share the common element of Barnes’ commitment to what he calls “quality, hand-crafted spirits.” “No matter what we make, two things are consistent: we meticulously select the best ingredients for our products, and we adhere to stringent distilling methods to ensure a KLJK TXDOLW\ À QLVKHG SURGXFW 2XU VSLULWV DUH born of science and experience, created in custom-made pot and column stills with our own

We continually test new recipes and try new processes to create amazing spirits that we think you’ll love,” An example of this care is the molasses used in Treaty Oak Rum. “Our Treaty Oak Rum is made with molasses sourced from the last sugar mill in Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. We brew rum beer made of molasses and yeast in an initial fermentation, and then distill it in our custom stills,” Barnes said. As evidence of this passion and commitment to quality, Treaty Oak earned the 2004 Distiller of the Year Award from MicroLiquor. And Barnes was selected among a

Shopping BY RACHEL WILLIS PHOTOS BY VINTAGE SOUL
Dripping Springs is home to a shopping district that has the appeal of small-town friendliness with top-of-the-line amenities. Shop owners specializing in different trades have made Dripping Springs an eclectic mix of boutiques, shops and specialty stores. Some, like Cowgirls and Lace, have had their roots in the community for 25 years, steadily growing alongside the Hill Country town. Other shops, like Vintage Soul and Sacred Moon Herbs, have found a welcoming community to settle within. Reba Byrd is the owner of Cowgirls and Lace. She started her eclectic home market a quarter of a century ago in a 600 square foot space and has steadily grown it into the 2200 square feet it stands in today. It began as a crochet shop and grew to encompass custom design of bedding and an unparalleled amount of bedding, luxury bath collections, home decor and a full-scale toy store. Cowgirls and Lace has the quintessential small-town charm. Patrons are known by name, and you’ll always be greeted when you walk through the doors. “One thing that I’ve always stressed is a very customer friendly environment and when I hire someone that’s what I stress most,” Byrd said. “When you come into my store, someone’s going to speak to you and if you come in very often we will know who you are.” The Historic District is another place to shop. It’s based around the intersection of Mercer Street and Old Fitzhugh Road, and it’s where locals gather, music is played and the family atmosphere lends itself to 18

Carl Weathersby, a Chicago blues style guitarist and vocalist that has played with the likes of Albert King and Billy Branch headlines Hudson’s every Wednesday night. “Carl is a part of the era of blues players that started it. Said Chad Hudson. “Albert King is the reason Stevie Ray Vaughn played the way he did and Carl played with Albert King for four years on the same stage every night. You’re talking about that kind of legacy right here in Dripping Springs. The music scene continues to expand with many local restaurants, coffee houses and bars supporting the cause. Just look around and you can see how Austin – the Live Music Capital of the World – has spilled into Dripping Springs. Visitors can also enjoy food and beverage while in the Historic District. But the dancehall and Hudson’s aren’t the only venues for live music on Mercer Street. The Barbershop, a pub on Mercer where many locals have their own name engraved mugs waiting for them behind the bar, gets in on the action with music every Tuesday night. There’s always something happening in the Historic Districts. “This is the heart of Dripping Springs, John McIintosh, co-owner of the Barber Shop said.

It spills over these rocks forming a neat water pattern. There are areas where it shoots through rapids. There are deep pools between the falls as well that are very pretty. BY DALTON SWEAT PHOTOS BY WESTCAVE PRESERVE The highlights of Westcave Preserve are the cave formations and waterfalls that are surrounded by native vegetation on the 75-acre park. “In terms of geological time it is about 100,000 years of erosion from the Pedernales River that has formed a beautiful canyon,” Paul Vickery, education director at Westcave Preserve, said. “When you get to the head, there is this magnificent grotto. You’ve got lush ferns and mosses growing. In the summer months it may be a 20 degree temperature shift from the upper area down to the grotto.” It is worth a trip to take in all that the preserve offers. Tours of Westcave allow visitors to see and believe the wonders of the park. Guided tours are the only way to protect the fragile ecosystem. The goal is to protect, respect, steward and educate the public. “Our guided tour gives you a perspective of how our property has been in recovery mode for the last 40 years,” Vickery said. “We celebrated our 40th year last year. That continued dedication is not only to preserve our current features but to allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of nature and seek inspiration from it.” The gorgeous grotto is only available for view YLD JXLGHG WRXU WKDW DUH RIIHUHG RQ D À UVW FRPH

Ma Maison sits on 23 acres of sprawling Hill Country and offers three beautiful outdoor areas for ceremonies and celebrations, ranging from shady stately oak trees, to a lake front backdrop to an antique French gazebo. Prospect House, located down the road from Treaty Oak Brewing and Distilling, features a nature-integrated and modern venue for couples. The venue features indoor and outdoor ceremony sites for couples, as well as a beautiful vista of rolling prairie grasses and Texas Red Oaks as far as the eye can see. 'ULSSLQJ ZLWK 7DVWH BY JOHN PACHECO PHOTOS BY JANICE SMITH Come out and sample the largest assortment of Texas wines, craft beers, gourmet foods and spirits available under one roof, at the 10th Annual Dripping with Taste Wine & Food Festival. Sponsored by the Dripping Springs Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, the festival was created to showcase the growing number of local vineyards, breweries, distilleries and gourmet food fares peppering the area. That number continues to grow and so does the festival. This year’s festival includes over 75 “tasteful vendors and an estimated two thousand food
and wine enthusiasts. One of the more exciting additions to the festival has been the inclusion of Distilleries. As of last year, rum, vodka, gin and even a little whiskey have joined the party. Many of the offers are made right here in the area. But, the fun doesn’t stop at the tasting. The festival also includes cooking demonstrations, drink mixology classes, live music, specialty vendors, a free photo booth and actual grape stomping. You can even get
a t-shirt to prove you did it! “This isn’t your typical, snooty, wear a tie, spit out good booze festival. Music Fans Turn Out for 6RQJZULWHUV )HVWLY DO BY GARY ZUPANCIC The Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival, this year from October 20 – 22, is now a local tradition. The weather cools down, and the music fans turn out in downtown Dripping Springs to enjoy just about any type of acoustic music you would want. If you don’t like what you’re hearing, wait a couple of minutes and somebody else will be playing something completely different. The Saturday night headliner show is a ticketed event, but the daytime shows are free. Each venue hosts four individual songwriters for an hour and a half. Each songwriter does one of their own songs before passing it off to the next songwriter. The process is called a writer round or song swap, which allows everyone a chance to sing while giving each songwriter the ability to pick their best tunes. The festival starts on Friday night and concludes on Sunday afternoon with a wrap party. The songwriters come from all over – even Australia. Dripping Springs residents and local B&Bs house the songwriters. Although not paid, the songwriters are fed and have a roof over their heads while they are here. The venues include the Barber Shop, Hill Country Guitars, Hudson’s on Mercer, Sidecar Tasting Room, and Mercer Street Dancehall. See over 40 musicians during the Dripping Springs Songwriter’s Festival and who knows? Maybe you’ll enjoy a future number one hit. More information www.drippingspringssongwritersfestival.com
