President’s Welcome Welcome to the 2021 Summer Horse Racing Season and 133rd Gillespie County Fair. I am very proud to serve as president of the board of directors of the oldest, continuously operating fair association in Texas. Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers, staff, and directors and families for their hard work in keeping our longstanding traditions alive. With the continued support of our community, along with the many visitors coming to Fredericksburg, we can continue many events this summer and beyond. Last year the world changed fast due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We all scrambled trying to decide what to do. I am proud of what we were able to do, although they were very scaled back events. This year promises to be a new “new normal” as we recover from a very lean 2020. Rest assured, we will still keep your health and safety our top concern, but hope you feel much more comfortable attending all of our events. With so many people and organizations to thank for helping us get through these trying times, it would be impossible to mention them all, but we greatly appreciate everyone’s help and support – we could not have continued without all of you. Thank you all so much! Four big weekends of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing will see the heart pounding action of horses thundering down the track. Gates will open at 11 a.m. and post time is 1 p.m. for each race day. Of course, plenty of cold beverages and a variety of food
year, we decided to forego a big Night in Old Fredericksburg Saturday night concert and dance and decided to do two smaller concerts, both in conjunction with the City of Fredericksburg’s firework shows, with no admission charge. Those were Friday, May 7, on the eve of Fredericksburg’s 175th Anniversary of its founding and Sunday, July 4, our United States Independence Day. Edward R. Stroeher
choices will be available for your enjoyment at each event. The Fourth of July weekend is our first race meet of the summer and the horses will be running on July 3 and 4. On Sunday evening we invite everyone out for an evening of casual family fun. We will have music by a local favorite, Crystal Peak, and there will be no admission charge after 5 p.m. The City of Fredericksburg will host its Fourth of July firework show, which has become a favorite annual event, so come on out and enjoy these events. Our second weekend of activities will be July 17-18 at our Night in Old Fredericksburg Race Meet. In conjunction with the horse races on Saturday, the Lonestar Barbeque Society returns with a sanctioned cookoff competition, along with the CASI sanctioned chili cook-off. Get your taste buds ready, as they will be seeking participants to judge their savory masterpieces – no experience necessary, they will instruct you! In addition, the public is invited to participate in games of washer pitching and a 42 domino tournament. Due to the uncertain circumstances this
Aug. 14-15 is our third weekend of horse racing (previously known as the Race Day Classic Weekend) with the popular goat roping event happening Saturday evening. Aug. 26-29 brings our long awaited 133rd Gillespie County Fair. We will have a full weekend of lively entertainment, a carnival, horse racing, educational demonstrations, and many exhibits of livestock, agricultural and home products as well as a wide variety of food and drink. You are invited to enter and display your favorite baked or canned goods, produce, plants or handmade craft item in the exhibition hall. There are many categories to enter suitable to all ages. Entries will be taken from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26. Tejano music by La Calma, out of San Antonio, is scheduled for your Thursday night enjoyment. Once again there is no admission charge for Thursday, so bring the family and get a first look at what is in store for the big weekend. On Friday, the gates will open at 1 p.m. and, after a hiatus last year, we are so glad to welcome back Moore’s Greater Shows as our carnival and midway

operator. With the recent passing of owner Rickey Moore, we truly appreciate the dedication of this family-owned business in honoring their commitments. As always, their goal is to provide clean, safe enjoyable family entertainment. Our thoughts go out to the Moore family. The Gillespie County Fair Parade officially kicks off the 133rd Gillespie County Fair on Friday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. The parade will travel down Main Street through the heart of historic Fredericksburg. The fair parade is always one of the largest in the Texas Hill Country and can feature over 200 units.
After the parade, the festivities move out to the fairgrounds with gates opening at 1 p.m. There will be plenty to see in the exhibition hall and livestock barn during the afternoon and throughout the entire fair. Returning Friday afternoon will be the always popular 42 domino tournament. Bring your partner and sign up. The 2022 Queen’s Pageant will be held Friday evening at 7 p.m. in front of the grandstands. Join us for the crowning of the 134th Fair Queen and her Court. We will also be having retired director dedications and media appreciation during that time.
Following the pageant, you can dance under the stars to the western swing of Jody Nix & the Texas Cowboys. On Saturday, the gates will open at 10 a.m. with a full day of rides, games, vendors, livestock shows, exhibits in the hall, horse racing and exceptional food and drinks. Saturday afternoon will feature rounds of open goat roping, so put a team together and come rope! Then the evening brings some truly great entertainment with “The Voice” contestants, Holly Tucker and Curtis Grimes, followed by headliner Pam Tillis.
GCFFA Honorary Wallace Britton The 133rd Gillespie County Fair is dedicated to Wallace Britton, an Honorary Lifetime Director of the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, Inc. He served on the board of directors for sixteen years, from 1997-2013. During that time, he served on numerous committees such as Scholarship Fest, Float, Safety, Concessions, Carnival, Finance, Video and Property & Grounds. He also served as Treasurer 2003 – 2004 and again in 2006-2007, Vice-President in 2010-2011 and President in 2011-2012, also serving as Past President for the 125th Gillespie County Fair. After parimutuel racing started Wallace volunteered for many years manning cameras during the races. Away from the fair association, Wallace works for the Texas
Department of Licensing and Regulation. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy and The Texas Army National Guard. Wallace’s family includes, Wife Malinda (Susie), daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Tom Goldstein, son and daughter-inlaw, Myron and Dana Fiedler and daughter Melody Fiedler, as well as grandchildren Robert (who is manning cameras during the live races), Krista, Chance and Breena. Wallace is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cave Creek where he currently serves on the church council. “I am humbled and thank the Fair Association for this honor and would also like to dedicate this to my family, without whose support these years of service would not have been possible.” The directors of the 133rd Gillespie County Fair are honored to recognize Wallace for his

Ronald E. Ersch Ronnie has dedicated his service as a Director of the Gillespie County Fair & Festivals Association, Inc. for 25 years, from 1989 to 2013. He served on the Executive Board 7 years, and as President of the Association for the 1998-1999 term. Ronnie served on the Parade Float Committee for all 25 years, 3 years as Chairman and many

Sunday wraps up our final day of racing for 2021, so come on out and watch the horses run, ride some rides and test your skills at the carnival games. Wrapping up our 2021 season is the 25th Annual Scholarship Fest, on Sept. 25, benefiting local students with scholarship awards. It’s an evening of great food, games, prizes and auctions so plan to come out and help these young men and women! Since 1991 we have awarded $512,500 to 793 students. Thank you, again, to everyone involved in keeping these time-honored traditions going. We look forward to seeing everyone at the fairgrounds and let’s have a record-breaking year! Edward R. as CoChairman. His service on the Racing Committee for 20 years continues as he is still Video Chairman. Ronnie was General Manager of the Racing Committee for the 2003 race season. Other committees Ronnie served on are the Scholarship Committee, Advertising Ronald E. Ersch Committee, Simulcast Committee, and the Easter Fires Pageant. In his spare time, he helped many other committees as needed. Ronnie also worked with the Queens Court each year to support 125 young people that made up the 5 members of the Queens Court each year. He worked with them to represent Gillespie County in countless parades. Ronnie has worked alongside all the local men and women who are an integral part of this organization and generously volunteered his time along with theirs to support and promote the Fredericksburg community. He said of his time served, “I have met a lot of great people and made many new friends. Working alongside many life long friends has meant the most to me.” He would like to thank all the folks that made his years of service so memorable.

Fair Will Look Like Normal in 2021 This year’s Gillespie County Fair will actually look like a fair, as the coronavirus pandemic gets more under control.
There is a charge for the carnival and midway, which also opens Thursday and continues throughout the weekend.
The 2021 fair will be its 133rd year, and people from around the county and the Texas Hill Country are ready for what it has to offer. Fair dates for this season are Aug. 26-29 at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds.
Earlier on Thursday, entries will be taken in the agriculture and home skills departments from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Judging gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, the 133rd Gillespie County Fair will include two days of live pari-mutuel horse racing, a carnival and midway, displays of agricultural and home products, a parade, a queen’s contest, antique machinery displays, musical entertainment and a livestock exhibition. The 133rd Gillespie County Fair opens on Thursday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. with free admission to the grounds. Free Tejano concerts will be provided by La Calma beginning at 7 p.m.
The Gillespie County Fair Parade will make its way along Main Street, Friday morning, Aug. 27, starting at 10 a.m. After the parade, events shift back to the fair grounds site where the gates open at 1 p.m. The 2022 Gillespie County Fair Queen and her court will be crowned during ceremonies planned Friday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m.

The 2021 racing season at the Class III facility at the fair grounds concludes on Sunday. Highlighting the racing program on the final day of the season will be the running of the 2021 Gillespie County Fair Futurity. Throughout the weekend, the Exhibition Hall will be open for those interested in viewing the agricultural and home products displays, educational exhibits and more. Over in the Show Barn, livestock judging will take place Friday through Sunday, August 27th-29th.

Parade, carnival, live music back for 2021 fair. After an unprecedented pandemic heavily altered the 2020 Gillespie County Fair, things should be back to normal in 2021.
Here’s what is coming back for 2021 can be found below:
PARADE
A Fair representative says that with things opening up again, we will again be returning to normal for all our events. Our patrons health and safety are still a priority.
After a year of no parade, everyone is itching to bring it back for the 2021 season.
The Fair is still keeping some precautionary methods, such as hand sanitizer stations and distancing signage.
After the parade, events shift back to the fair grounds site where the gates open at 1 p.m.
Patrons are also welcome if they choose to wear a mask. We want everyone to feel comfortable.
It will take place in downtown Fredericksburg, as usual, from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 27. Area youth participate in livestock showing in the Show Barn. Livestock judging will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27-29.

CARNIVAL The fair is also coming back after a year of absence. However, there is a charge for the carnival and midway, which will open Thursday and continues through the weekend.
There will be eight days of racing for the 2021 season, and will open with the July Fourth Race Meet on Saturday and Sunday, July 3-4. A representative said officials will again offer mobile betting, something that came out initially during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Viewers will be able to place bets from their phones while on the premises, meaning they will need to physically be on the grounds to use this option.

Floatin’ Down Main Parade will kick off Friday fair festivities. Citizens and visitors alike will line up along the side-walks of Main Street as the 133rd Gillespie County Fair Parade rolls through on Friday, Aug. 27. Entrants are expected to begin lining up after 7 a.m. Judging of the entries will begin at 8:30 a.m., while the parade will start promptly at 10 a.m. Online entries can be made at https://gillespiefair.com/gillespiecounty-fair Forms will not be mailed unless requested. For this year’s parade, Jason Priess serves as the chairperson while Edward Stroeher, Marvin Crenwelge, Art Pressler and Lindsay Pressler are co-chairs. Parade day volunteers will help arrange entries ranging from floats, to new and old vehicles, to flatbed trailers, to horsemen. There will be commercial entries serving as mobile advertising for their products or services, and others will represent churches,

civic groups and other area organizations seeking to get their message seen by thousands of parade viewers. The parade grand marshals are to be announced. This year’s fair catalog honorees are Wallace Britton and Ronnie Ersch. Other dignitaries in the parade will include the contestants seeking the title of the 2022 Gillespie County Fair Queen. Fredericksburg and Harper high school marching bands will take part in the parade, and floats from area communities and fairs throughout Central and South Texas will seek to bring patrons to their own events. Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association officials said they appreciate the county for the use of Courthouse Square as a staging area and the City of Fredericksburg for providing personnel from the street and police departments to help direct traffic and pace the procession.
A few rules must be observed by participants and parade watchers. • All vehicles in the parade must be able to navigate the entire parade route and make all turns and clearances without difficulty. It is the responsibility of each driver to see to it that their vehicle or float clears all obstacles and can maneuver turns. If the route includes a U-turn, parade entries must be able to maneuver and make a U-turn in one motion (no reversing). Participants must design their entry in length, width and height to meet this requirement. Floats and entries cannot exceed the 13 feet, 6 inch height limit from ground to top of float/entry. • To reduce gaps, vehicles should maintain their speed to the pace of a slow walk and stay within two to three car lengths of the preceding entry. • Entries are not allowed to stop or impede the forward motion of the parade at any time with performances, dancing, stopping to rev engines, or any

other action that alters parade movement. Performing groups should choreograph routines to always maintain forward motion. • No candy or other enticements will be thrown/handed from any entry to spectators. • No jumping on or off moving entries: Parade participants may not jump, dance, ride, bike, roller skate, roller-blade, skateboard, or move in any way onto or off any moving float or vehicle. • Entries should never stop on the parade ending street/road at any time for unloading to allow for all entries to safely exit the parade route. • Water guns and spraying of water by any means is prohibited. • No alcohol may be consumed by float drivers or anyone operating an entry during the event.
• No music, sirens, air-horns, firing of re-enactment weapons, or other noises that exceed 85 decibels without prior approval from the City of Fredericksburg. • Precautions to protect against COVID-19 will be following guidelines laid out by the City of Fredericksburg. Parade watchers should bring their own water as the event can last a while. All parade information as subject to change. Updates will be announced in the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post, on the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association website at gillespiefair.com and the fair association’s Facebook page.

Pam Tillis Headlines Fair Concerts The Gillespie County Fair is digging deep into its country roots for musical entertainment this year.
Grimes is also a Texas native and has had 12 hit singles on the Texas Country Music Chart. The award-winning performer has over 50 million Spotify streams and has sold over 100,000 albums.
Grammy Award winner Pam Tillis will headline the concerts Saturday night. Raised in Nashville, Tillis has a strong background in country music because of her father and fellow country artist, the late Mel Tillis. Her second album, “Put Yourself in My Place,” had several singles hit the Top 10, including “Maybe it was Memphis,” “Don’t Tell Me What to Do,” and “Shake the Sugar Tree.” That propelled her to country stardom in the 1990s. Last year Tillis announced that she was recording a new album which will be released on her own record label, Stellar Cat. Joining Tillis on the bill for Saturday night are Holly Tucker and Curtis Grimes, both of whom appeared on the popular television series, “The Voice.”
He is known for songs such as “From Where I’m Standing,” “Put My Money on That,” and “The Cowboy Kind.”

Holly Tucker was born and raised in Waco and has been called the Angel of Texas Country Music. The 28-year-old has recorded four studio albums as well as three successful radio singles. Among her hits are “Dallas on Your Boots,” “You’re in Texas,” and “Rhythm of You.”
Thursday night’s entertainment will be a free concert by La Calma. Friday night brings even more excitement with the appearance of Jody Nix & The Texas Cowboys. Nix is a well-established country artist, hailing from Big Spring and is no stranger to Gillespie County. Scholarship Fest Set for Sept. 25 Higher education gets a boost during the 25th annual Scholarship Fest on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. Gates open at 3 p.m. Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, the event includes afternoon activities, appetizers, a dinner, silent and live auctions and a prize drawing for thousands of dollars in prizes donated by local and area businesses and individuals. Monies raised from the event go toward the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association’s scholarship program.
Since 1991, the fair association has awarded $512,500 in scholarships to 793 Gillespie County high school students. Scholarship tickets are $20 each will be sold at the office at the fairgrounds, from directors of the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association and at locations around the county. For dinner, a barbecue brisket meal with all the trimmings will be served. Thousands of dollars in prizes and auction items will be available, including guns, hunting and fishing equipment, jewelry, gift certificates and more. Individuals and businesses interested in donating cash or
prizes to the event are asked to call the fair association office at 997-2359. Tickets for the prizes to be given away at Scholarship Fest will also be available at the fair office, from the directors and at locations around the county. Horse Racing Returns for 2021 A summer season of live pari-mutuel horse racing returns to the Gillespie County Fair Grounds in July and August. Eight days of racing are on the 2021 schedule at the Class III track. Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, Inc., the weekend race meets will also include special events and activities. The 2021 live racing season opens with the July Fourth Race Meet on Saturday and Sunday, July 3-4. Racing action at the five-eighths mile oval continues on Saturday and Sunday, July 17-18, with the Night In Old Fredericksburg Race Meet. The Gillespie County Race Meet is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14-15. Rounding out the live parimutuel racing season will be two days of races on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 28-29, as part of the 133rd Gillespie County Fair.
Post time each day is 1 p.m. As in the past, the Gillespie County Fair Grounds will offer race fans a covered grandstand, numerous betting windows, tote board, easy access and plenty of free parking. The GCFFA is also offering mobile betting this year. Through this service betters can place their wagers through their phones. However, the service will only work on the GCFFA premises. Patrons will need to be physically on the grounds to use that option, explained fair association officials. General admission, reserved seating and box seating are available. The general admission seats are available in both the grandstand and in the Biergarten while the box seats are located in the grandstand. General admission for the races is $10 for adults (ages 13 & up), $5 for children six to 12 years of age and free for children five and under.
Box seats are $20 for any age. Also available are summer season passes for $60. Online ticketing for all Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association-sponsored events at the fairgrounds is available through the fair association’s website at www.gillespiefair.com In addition to the eight days of live racing at the local Class III facility, a simulcast facility is open at 35 Fair Drive for yearround wagering. Simulcasting at The Race Barn is offered Thursdays through Sundays from horse and dog tracks around the country. The facility also includes a restaurant.

Longest-reigning Fair Court Fair queen, duchesses make most out of historic year. Since a global pandemic hindered the regular responsibilities of the 132nd Gillespie County Fairs & Festivals Association Queen’s Court last year, the young ladies will continue their reign for the 133rd fair. The returning court, consisting of Queen Brittley Bowers, First Duchess Ella Sanchez, Second Duchess Taylor DeLong and Third Duchess Lauren Beyer, will participate in all the aspects of their roles they missed out on last year.

“I’ve definitely grown up a bit” since I was first inducted into the court as a junior at Fredericksburg High School, Beyer said. Even though their reign last year started out with the court’s typical duties, the coronavirus pandemic forced them to change how they represented Gillespie County. “We were working on our float and getting our dresses and then whenever COVID-19 hit and everything stopped,” Bowers said. The pandemic limited the events the court could be a part of as well as the number of people that could be in attendance.
Although the court participated in the horse races and a downsized fair last year, they missed out on some of the bigger events.
“We were able to do smaller events, but not the fair, the Night in Old Fredericksburg or parades,” Sanchez said.
Bowers said it’s been almost two years now since they were crowned.
SECOND CHANCE Because of these changes, directors from the Gillespie County Fairs & Festivals Association asked
the court to reprise their roles for the 133rd year of the fair. “Then, our directors sat down with us last summer, and they were like, ‘We want y’all to carry on another reign just because y’all never got the experience that you deserved,” Bowers said. Bowers said she was excited by the opportunity to return and thankful for the decision the association made, but also curious as to how it would all play out. “We were just thankful that they wanted to let us continue on,” Bowers said. The court was grateful for the opportunity to represent their county again. “I would just like to thank all of the people that work for the Gillespie County Fair Association because they’ve tried so hard, over these past couple of years just to keep the fair going throughout these trying times,” Beyer said.

“It’s been nice because we obviously didn’t get to do much last year. But this year, we took out our float, and it was just nice,” Sanchez said.

Adding another year onto the court’s reign, however, gave them a second chance, but also a unique title. “We call ourselves ‘The Longest Reigning Fair Court,’ so we have that title,” Bowers said. “I’m also called the COVID-19 queen a lot.” Sanchez says she really enjoys being on the fair court, so the additional year tacked on to her reign as duchess was a pleasant surprise. “It’s definitely a different experience than the other courts, but it’s also a nice experience,” Sanchez said.
Beyer said when they prepped the float to be a part of the Stonewall Peach JAMboree parade, it was covered in dust. “We originally put purple paper there, now it’s pink,” Beyer said. One added benefit to the extended reign, the court said, is the fact that the experience strengthened their friendships with each other. “We’re friends outside the court so it’s cool to see how we’ve become so close over the last

Fair Honors Five for Their Years of Service

Five individuals who have packed away their cameras, closed their notepads and hung up their headphones are being recognized this year by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association. Marc Bennett, Terry and Cathy Collier, Charles Feller and Yvonne Hartmann are being recognized for their combined 180-plus years of photographing and reporting on activities and events at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. “We chose to recognize these five individuals for their work over the years doing their job while also helping us,” said Edward Stroeher, president of the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association. “As we celebrate the 175th anniversary of Fredericksburg and the 133rd Gillespie County Fair, we thought this would be a good time to recognize Marc, Terry, Cathy, Charles, and Yvonne for their contributions to the fair association and to the community.” Stroeher said, “They went above and beyond the call of duty and were always here when we needed them. We do appreciate all that they have done for us, for Fredericksburg and for Gillespie County.” “We worked together as professionals but also built genuine friendships beyond the work that brought us together,” Stroeher said. Marc, who is semi-retired and the owner of White Oak Studio, served as track photographer and official photographer for the directors and fair queen’s court along with other special events

MARC BENNETT In the spring of 1985, shortly after I had moved to Fredericksburg, I got a call from Mike Sagebiel with the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association. He wanted to know

Some the best memories of my life were of Saturday night during the fair. Listening to great music, shuffling around the dance floor, serving beer at a bar shift, and stocking ice and beer in the coolers at a frantic pace during Saturday night. There are a lot of great stories I could tell about my times at the fairgrounds, and the friends that I have made there. The year that Patrick Kunz was president, someone had the idea for me to use his official president photo and lampoon it -- use Photoshop to make his face look funny. We had buttons made of his altered hilarious face for us all to wear during Fair Night. That was a fun surprise for President Kunz! The tradition of an Official Lampoon Photo of the president continues to this day. I’m working on Edward’s right now. I sure did have some fun times at the fairgrounds – met some of my best friends – and drank a few beers too! Work hard, play hard.
CATHY COLLIER Now, Fredericksburg’s streets are filled each weekend – and much of the time during the week – with visitors here to enjoy all the wonderful attractions and events that Gillespie County has to offer.
But when Terry and I moved here in 1973, the Gillespie County Fair WAS the big event of the year. Our very first weekend here, as we moved into a cute little house on Centre Street, one of my strongest memories is of hearing the announcer for the races at the old fairgrounds – where H-E-B is located today. You could hear the roar of the crowds as the horses neared the finish line. It sounded like great fun and I couldn’t wait to go. I loved that the old fairgrounds – with its graceful grandstands and well-aged structures – was located right in the heart of town. Two things were clear: Gillespie County loved to have fun and they appreciated their heritage. Fast forward to 1985. When I retired from teaching and went to work for the newspaper, I began to see the fair from the inside. This time, as well, two things were clear. Regardless of where the fairgrounds were located, people still loved to have fun and appreciate their heritage. But I was also able to understand just how many human resources and how much hard work went into making the fair happen. Yvonne Hartmann and I were often the lucky ones who had duty in the exhibition hall – where we tried unsuccessfully to talk the ladies into letting us be judges
for the baking contest and where people were proud of their prize pickles or giant squash or bundle of hay. We watched children shyly come to see if they had won a ribbon for a piece of art or cookie entry. We watched older veterans of the fair competitions beam with pride no matter whether they were winning for the first time or the umpteenth time. I was awed by the artistry of the weavers, the quilters, the painters – all of it. I was also lucky enough to get an insiders break when – during the hottest part of an August afternoon in the exhibition hall – Yvonne would grab my arm and take me into the beer cooler where we could lower our internal temperature by 10 or 20 degrees. For me, the horse races are always associated with the fair and, while I loved going as a spectator, it was also fun to be a roving photographer, catching people’s expressions as they won or lost, made their bets, visited with friends or watched the horses trying to choose a winner before each race. Working at the newspaper, I was so lucky to be able to see the fair from both sides and to appreciate the efforts of everyone who made it happen. It struck me that no one was doing it to get their name or picture in the paper or to get a pat on the back. Instead, they took

part because it was fun, because it was a part of our community’s heritage, and because they just loved putting on an event that made memories.
TERRY COLLIER My association with the Gillespie County Fair Association began with the 1974 fair – a few months after my wife, Cathy, and I had moved the previous fall to Fredericksburg for me to join the staff of the Fredericksburg Standard. For the next 38 years until my retirement from the newspaper business here in 2012, I helped produce articles promoting fair association-sponsored-and-hosted events. Chief among these duties, besides writing articles, was the taking of photos of various fair events, especially during livestock shows, exhibitions and horse races
held first at the old fairgrounds location where H-E-B now stands and later at the current fairground home. Besides the pure satisfaction that I had over the years from doing my work as a reporterphotographer, working with the men and women of the fair association (which included many of the same people helping put on the community’s annual youth stock show) helped this city boy who grew up in San Antonio to meet some interesting people who were volunteering no small amount of their time, knowledge, and sweat for the sake of this Texas Hill Country community and the adults and children who both lived and visited here. Personally, the real benefit was a decades-long education on what rural life really means,
thanks to the genuine building blocks practiced here of trust, commitment, and strong character. For this, I have been most grateful for the lessons learned, friendships made, memories stored and actual fun the experience has afforded me. From kneeling down for a deserving trophy photo in something coming from the “south end” of a prize-winning pig to hustling out of harm’s way when a young steer had enough of a halter, to squatting in the dirt along a race track railing, or perching atop a starting gate (before parimutuel) to get a unique photo the split-second horses break for the finish line, it’s been – from the start – an enriching, eye-opening experience. And, lest I forget to give credit where credit is due, I need to

mention that working in the show barn alongside “right arm” newspaper associates like Yvonne Hartmann and Lisa Treiber-Walter made my job as a photographer of various show animals and their exhibitors comparatively easy. All I had to do was wait for the right moment, point the camera and shoot. They, on the other hand, had to corral sometimes-distracted celebratory exhibitors and their winners-circle friends/family members, accurately write down everyone’s names along with other pertinent details and then make sure all that information made it into the newspaper correctly. In short, working at fair association events was more fun than I could ever imagine, and I wouldn’t trade the experience for all the money that I lost over the years trying to pick a winner at the race track.
CHARLES FELLER Working at a radio station in San Marcos while attending college eventually turned into a long career in broadcasting for me. After leaving college, I moved back home to Gillespie County and started working part-time in 1954 for Radio Station KNAF. I went full-time in 1955. Then, in 1956, I moved to San Antonio for work. After 20 years of being away from the microphone, I started taking outside jobs in 1976 broadcasting on Radio Station KNAF. As it just so happens, one of my broadcasts in 1976 was from the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. Bill Jung and I did the first broadcast from the new fairgrounds when it was dedicated in 1976. Along with broadcasting from the show barn, the exhibition
hall and the queen’s contest during the fair and other summer events at the fairgrounds, I also provided radio broadcasts from the Stonewall Peach JAMboree and Rodeo, Harper Frontier Days, Blanco County Fair, the District Livestock Show in Kerrville, tractor and car shows, hay shows, the turkey shoot and more. Looking back, I should have kept a diary. In all of my years of broadcasting from around the Hill Country, I only missed one assignment, and that was because someone ran a stop sign on Milam Street and wrecked my pickup. Because I grew up on a farm and ranch, I have always had an interest in livestock. My brother and I showed animals at the old fairgrounds, and I even took ag classes in college.

I was asked many times over the years to broadcast from the horse races but I felt like I didn’t know enough about it. I wasn’t going to put my foot in my mouth. I didn’t know a trifecta from a superfecta, and I didn’t know this and I didn’t know that. One of the best parts of the job is getting to work with the people – with the youngsters, with the judges and of course with all of the committee members that produce the shows. I can proudly say that I never had a cross word with anybody out here. With 44 years of broadcasting behind me, I have lots of stories to tell and memories to share. It wasn’t uncommon for an animal to break loose from its owner during a show, but it was usually always easy to catch. However, at one recent show, the steer must have decided it wanted to go home and it wasn’t long before it got out of the show barn and onto the grounds. Concerned about the people outside the barn, they announced over the PA system that they needed someone on a horse to come and help corral the animal. And by gosh, somebody came up on a horse and that ended the roaming of that calf.
Another time while broadcasting from the fair, the main transmitter went out around 5 p.m. and we didn’t have a spare. The engineer and I headed to San Antonio to pick up a new one. He told me to be on the lookout for the cops because we were going to have this thing back on the air before dark. And we did. I decided to retire from broadcasting in 2020 after 44 years, and I can’t say enough good things about the people I worked with. I have never worked with a better bunch of people than all of the stock shows and fairs connected. Everyone was always so cooperative.
YVONNE HARTMANN Ever since I can remember I have attended the Gillespie County Fair and I have watched many a horse race dating back to the old fairgrounds way before parimutuel was introduced. I played in the band at the Easter Fires, marched in fair parades and more as a high school student. After graduating from Southwest Texas State University in 1981 with a degree in journalism, I came back to Fredericksburg and started what would become a 39½ year newspaper career with the Standard, which later became the Standard-Radio Post. Thanks
to publisher Arthur Kowert and editor Terry Collier, I was given the opportunity to intern at the Standard for three summers while I was in college. They didn’t waste any time sending me out to learn how to cover the wonderful community we were fortunate to live and work in. I certainly don’t remember all of my assignments from those early years when I joined the staff full time, but I do remember teaming up with Terry Collier and later Cathy Collier to take trophy pictures in the exhibition hall and the show barn. Not to mention all of the other activities taking place that we photographed. Man, that was a lot of pictures. And all those names! It didn’t leave much time or energy to socialize at the fair, but I still managed to squeeze in some fun. As a reporter and photographer, I started to realize what all went into producing an event such as the fair. It truly is a sense of pride and bragging rights to win a trophy with prize-winning produce, with goodies made from a favorite recipe, with items created by hand or with livestock projects. It was fun to watch the camaraderie – whether they won a trophy or not -- between the regular participants.

My perspective of the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association changed again in 1992 when my husband, Russell, was voted on the board of directors. He served as a director for 21 years, and our two children, Kelsey and Alyssa, grew up at the fairgrounds. We were welcomed into the family and formed lasting friendships. While I didn’t put in near as many volunteer hours as many of the wives and significant others, I did try to help out when I could. We shared many laughs and some good information while working our bar shifts, and these ladies were kind enough to share their teepee with me on the rare occasions when I was able to participate in the Easter Fires. I was usually the one crouched down on my hands and knees in front of that low fence trying to avoid the spotlight and the stickers while getting the best shots possible. Now that I’m retired, I won’t be out there with my camera and notepad, but I plan to continue supporting the GCFFA, its activities and events. I am proud to have been a small part of the rich history of the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association and to help share its story for the past 39 years.

Racing Terms ACROSS THE BOARD: Bet a horse to win, place and show, and if the horse wins, the bettor collects all three ways.

DAILY DOUBLE: In a “Daily Double”, the bettor picks the winners of two consecutive races designated as “Daily Double” in the official race program. Agriculture & Home Skills Department Rules 1. NO PERSON WILL BE PERMITTED TO EXHIBIT ANY ARTICLE OF WHICH HE OR SHE IS NOT THE OWNER. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE A PRODUCT GROWN, CANNED, HANDCRAFTED, ETC BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1, 2020, AND AUGUST 26, 2021. Only residents of Gillespie county and adjoining counties may enter and all entries must be from Gillespie County or adjoining counties. 2. All articles shall be numbered by tag. 3. All Articles must be entered and labeled by the person in charge of the respective departments, and will remain under his/her charge until the close of the Fair. The management will exercise due care, but will not be responsible for the accident or losses.
5. Premiums won by clubs entering Community and Educational Exhibits will be paid by check, which will be mailed soon after the Fair.
6. During the Fair, no exhibit in any department will be allowed to be removed from the grounds without a permit. Permits can be obtained at Secretary’s Office in an emergency. 7. Premiums will be designated by ribbons. 8. Competition in the adult division is open to all persons. 9. Thursday, prior to the opening of the Fair and Exhibition Hall, the Chairmen will be on the grounds to receive and arrange articles in the respective departments. Exhibits in all departments must be entered between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2021. Positively no exhibits will be allowed to enter after the above date and time. The Exhibition Hall will be closed to spectators until the official opening of the Fair on Friday. 10. No lotteries of any kind, including selling of chances, prize drawings, etc., will be allowed on the grounds. 11. In order to give visitors an opportunity to see all exhibits at the Fair on the last day, no exhibits shall be removed before 5 p.m. on Sunday.
ITEMS NEED TO BE PICKED UP BETWEEN 5-6 P.M., SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, 2021. AT 6 P.M. ITEMS WILL BE TAKEN TO THE FAIR OFFICE. Exhibits not removed Sunday night must be removed the Tuesday morning after the fair. Items not picked up with in 30 days of fair closing will become property of Gillespie County Fair and Festival Association. 12. No entry will be allowed to show in the Junior Show and the Open Show. Exhibitor must have separate entries to exhibit in each category 13. All products must be Exhibited in standard brand and style jars with brand lids, (Ball, Kerr, Mason, etc.). No rusty or dirty lids will be accepted. No artificial coloring added to product. 14. No products will be sold by GCFFA. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A FRIENDLY COMPETITION WITH NO ENTRY FEES. Persons entering more than one bale in the show will pay all testing fees on the second and all additional entries. • Exhibits will be set up by committee on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at 9 a.m. the Fair Grounds. • The purpose of the Gillespie County Hay Show is to provide educational information on forage quality for producers and buyers. RULES AND REGULATIONS The following rules and regulations shall apply with no intended discrimination against any individual or group. 1. Any hay producer or buyer who has hay in his possession at the time of show may exhibit hay that he owns. Entries limited to hay produced in Gillespie and adjacent counties only. 2. Any individual may exhibit as many samples as he wishes from different cuttings and he may have entries in as many classes as he chooses. 3. 4. An entry will be disqualified when it contains more than a trace of injurious foreign material. This includes injurious plants such as bullnettle, briars, headed sandburs, mature Texas wintergrass, or Aristida (needlegrass) species, with needles attached and poisonous plants. Presence of hardware such as nails, wire, and other matter which is injurious when fed to livestock will disqualify an entry. 5. An entry will be disqualified when it has any objectionable odor; when it is under cured, heating, hot, wet, musty, moldy, caked, badly shattered, or broken, badly weathered, badly frosted, or very dusty. *Non-injurious foreign material includes weeds, weedy grasses, sedges, bushes, stubble, and stalks and other residue from other crops, manure, and other non-injurious but objectionable matter. 6. Ribbons will be awarded on the basis of the following classification groupings: - 1st blue - 2nd red - 3rd white

Home Skills Department Rules 1. NO PERSON WILL BE PERMITTED TO EXHIBIT ANY ARTICLE OF WHICH HE OR SHE IS NOT THE OWNER.

11. In order to give visitors an opportunity to see all exhibits at the Fair on the day, no exhibits shall be removed before 5 p.m. on Sunday. ITEMS NEED TO BE PICKED UP BETWEEN 5-6 P.M., SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, 2021. AT 6P.M. ITEMS WILL BE TAKEN TO THE FAIR OFFICE. Exhibits not removed Sunday night must be removed the Tuesday morning after the Fair. Items not picked up within 30 days of fair closing will become the property of Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association. 12. No entry will be allowed to show in the Junior Show and the Open Show. Exhibitor must have separate entries to exhibit in each category.

JUDGE: Ann Feller, Llano • Quilts must be a miniature, small, double, queen, or king size and must be pieced and quilted by person or group entering the quilt. • Miniature Quilts: length plus width must be no more than 48 inches. • Small Quilt (Wall Hanging/ Table Runner): Length plus width must be at least 48 inches, but less than 120 inches. • Double, Queen and King: Length plus width must be no less than 120 inches, and not to exceed 240 inches. • All size quilts must have a minimum of 3-inch width sleeve along the top back of quilt for hanging. Miniature quilts do not require a sleeve as they will be hung by coat hangers. • Any quilt longer than 100 inches MUST have the bottom turned up to back, pinned with safety pins or tacked in place taped • All sized quilts need to MUST have an fabric identification label sewn

Livestock Rules and Regulations THE FOLLOWING ARE RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE FAIR AS DECREES BY THE GILLESPIE COUNTY FAIR AND FESTIVALS ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS: 1. A gala street parade officially signals the start of the 133rd Gillespie county Fair Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, at 10 a.m. on Main Street. Fairgrounds will open at 1 p.m. 2. Most livestock entries must be in the hands of the fair association or postmarked on or before Monday, August 23, 2021 (MEAT GOAT AND LAMB FUTURITY ONLINE BY TUESDAY, AUGUST 10TH) or entry will be considered late. All Livestock that enters the fair grounds must be assigned exhibition space by the division superintendents.
ENTRY FEES MUST ACCOMPANY APPLICATIONS. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE. Neither space nor stall for showing of animals will be allotted after the fair has officially started. Unprotected fans will not be allowed in Livestock Barns and no extension cords on the ground. A properly completed entry blank is required for each animal. TEXAS ANIMALS ONLY. 3. Entry applications and pen reservations must be made to the Gillespie County Fair and

Exhibition will commence on Friday, August 27, at 8 a.m. and each following day of the fair at the same hour. 7. No lotteries of any kind, including selling of chance, prize tickets, etc., will be allowed on the grounds. 8. Premiums will be paid at time of judging. 9. Premiums will be paid based on the classes at the DISCRETION OF THE COMMITTEE. 10. Fair association reserves the right to refuse any entries. 11. Stalls will be limited to 4 feet per steer. Tack will be stored along walls or outside. No pre-stalling or saving stalls. No Camping in stalls.
