‘Crockett’s Choice’
In 1835, after losing his U.S. House seat to Andrew Jackson, Davy Crockett (1786-1836) famously told his constituents “... that I would serve them as faithfully as I had done. But if not, they might go to hell, and I would go to Texas.”
Lured by Col. Sam Houston’s tales of the state’s wild beauty, Crockett left Tennessee for Texas, embracing a life of hunting, fishing and camping that sealed his place in history.
Where might Crockett roam today in the Texas Hill Country?
Ask most folks what’s hunted in the Texas Hill Country and they’ll say, “whitetail deer.” But Crockett might

opt for upland bird hunting at Joshua Creek Ranch.
Founded in 1990 by Joe and Ann Kercheville, this 35-year-old ranch is one of just 25 Orvis-endorsed wingshooting lodges worldwide and a Beretta Trident Lodge, a nod to its excellence in outdoor sportsmanship.
Located where Joshua Creek meets the Guadalupe River — west of Boerne and 45 minutes from San Antonio — it draws over 15,000 visitors yearly, with 10,000 coming for its signature “driven shoot.” This European-style pheasant hunt flips tradition: game is driven toward the hunter, not flushed by dogs as in classic American hunts.
Open to novices and experts alike, the ranch offers quail, pheasant and chukar hunts, plus mallard duck hunts
(October to March), whitetail deer in season, and year-round exotic species like axis deer and blackbuck antelope.
Beyond hunting, it boasts fine dining — think wild game or custom meals — and lodging, served by a staff of 140, of which 100 are expertly bred English Cocker Spaniel gun dogs.
It’s public-friendly, not a private elite retreat. Visit joshuacreek.com for more.
Drought has hit the Texas Hill Country hard, with 99.76% of Kendall County under “exceptional” conditions. Yet fishing endures.

Boerne is both literally and figuratively an entryway into one of Texas’ most beautiful regions: The Hill Country.
While just a couple of decades or so ago, Boerne (pronounced Bur-nee) easily could have been considered hidden. Today, it is a town where technology and glories of yesteryear see equal balance.
Boerne is recognized across the United States as a desirable place to live. Listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the country’s fastest-growing regions, the area’s rapid expansion has meant numerous new housing subdivisions as well as an influx of industry,
business and tourism.
Boerne strives to hold on to its warm, small-town origins. Oak trees still grow together in canopies above many city streets, tree-lined roads pass by historic and new homes and a trip to the grocery store or your favorite watering hole almost guarantees an encounter with friends and neighbors.
Whether it’s shopping, visiting the area’s beautiful caves, exploring the local nature center, enjoying historically authentic exhibits, birding, cycling, hunting or hiking, Boerne provides the ideal blend of the urban and the rural.

Kolbie Roe, daughter of Kelton and Taylor Roe and granddaughter of Boerne Star Advertising Director Kolleen Roe, knows where to go when she’s “out on the town” with mom and dad -- Boerne City park, with its expansive walkways, lush greens, flowing river and ducks. Lots and lots of ducks.
What do you think Kolbie is getting ready to say? We’re sure it’s, “Welcome to Boerne, Gateway To The Hill Country. Enjoy yourselves.”
Karl Ludwig Börne (Boerne), a wellknown German writer, arts critic, publicist and later, ardent advocate of political freedom, who died in Paris, France, in 1837.
August Staffel was named postmaster in 1856. Boerne was still a dangerous frontier community and subject to Native American raids. Although sparsely settled (it had only ten houses by1859), it was chosen to be the county seat when the county was formed in 1862.
The new county was named after its most famous resident, internationally known author, writer and sheep farmer George Wilkins Kendall.
Most Germans opposed slavery. At the start of the Civil War, the vote to secede from the Union did not pass in Boerne. Continued resistance to the draft caused the Confederate government to briefly declare martial law in Kendall County.
In the 1880s tourists were drawn to Boerne due to its sparkling streams, fresh air and moderate climate. Several health resorts were established in Boerne. By 1884 the town had five hotels and had grown to 250 residents.
While tourism was important, Boerne was still an agricultural community based on farming and ranching. Shingles and fence posts, made from the cedars that lined the streams, were also important products as were other timber products and building stone.
The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway arrived in 1887 and brought increased economic opportunity. The population of Boerne rose to 800 by 1900.
Boerne incorporated in 1909 and established a mayor-alderman form of city government. The Boerne Independent School District was established that year.
The population reached 950 by 1914, and the community prospered through the 1920s. The Great Depression of the 1930s put an end to the tourism and cotton farming that had been staples of the local economy. The population fell from 2,000 in 1928 to 1,117 in 1931 and was slow to recover.
By the 1940s, it had only risen a few

percent. In the 1950s, however, many residents turned to nearby San Antonio for employment, and Boerne’s population was back on the rise. The population grew at a slow but steady rate, reaching 2,169 in 1960.
The construction of the San Antonio Medical Center and the University of Texas at San Antonio in neighboring Bexar County, as well as the completion of Interstate 10, had an impact on Boerne in the 1960s. Boerne became an attractive town for commuters and its population continued to climb: 2,400 in 1970; 3,254 in 1980; and 4,274 in 1990.
In 1995 the population exceeded 5,000, making Boerne eligible for homerule, which was approved. Growth accelerated and the population grew to more than 10,000 by the 2010 census and to more than 19,000 by the 2020 census. In 2024 the population reached 23,000. Meanwhile, Kendall County grew from 33,384 in 2010 to 52,000 in 2024.
Boerne today is a bustling city dealing with the issues of rapid growth, but it still retains that growth due to its attractive nature and outstanding educational facilities.
Boerne also holds on to its German heritage despite the influx of different
ethnic groups. More than 20% of Boerne’s population claimed German heritage in 2020. The Boerne Gesangverein (singing society) which was established in 1860, remained an important social and recreational organization until 1977. The Boerne Schuetzen Verein (shooting club), formed in 1864, and the Boerne Village Band, formed in 1860, are still active. The Boerne Village Band is the oldest German Band in America.
This structure was built in the late 1880s as a residence for German native William Kuhlmann. The Kuhlmann-King home has been owned by the city of Boerne since 1951.

and I had to bring my friends to check it out.”
With a basketball court and Jenga, families are welcome to enjoy this awesome brewery.
After Free Roam, we decided to check out a wine tasting room. We found that the newly opened Lost Oak Cellars on Rosewood Avenue was a perfect pick.
The atmosphere was deeply intimate, with beautiful wood furniture pieces matched with pops of red and yellow tuft chairs. The white marble countertops complimented the artistic green blown-glass chandelier crafted by Garcia Art Glass.
Manager Preston Garcia took us on a tour, showing us the cigar room and a private room available for rent.
“All the wine we have here comes from Lost Oak winery,” Garcia said. “We have reds, whites, sangrias and light bites. We opened back in June. This property used to be a funeral home, and it’s marked as a historical building in Boerne.”
Come out and schedule a guided tasting or just stop in and munch on a gourmet cheeseboard to accompany your glass or bottle of wine at this gorgeous new tasting room.
Last, we visited Salvador Dobbs, a cozy bar that stays open until midnight seven days a week.
Owned by Veronica Brown, the building — which still maintains its stunning authentic German architec-

ture — offers lounge seating outside and high-top tables indoors.
You’re welcome to enjoy a game of pool while ordering a cocktail of your choice, though Veronica suggests an old fashioned or French 55, two popular cocktails for locals and visitors alike.
“This used to be my father’s toy shop,” Brown said. “Then I asked him if I could open something for the local community to enjoy.
“There aren’t a lot of places like this in Boerne, where someone can enjoy a cocktail past 10,” she adds. “I always dreamed of having a place where everyone felt welcome and safe, and it’s been that way since we opened. I’m so grateful.”
The highlight of the night was being showed Salvador Dobb’s champagne room, which is hidden by a false-library shelf door. A gold and crystal chandelier hangs over velvet furniture and glass shelves.
Anyone is welcome to rent the room for the day for $250, which includes a bottle of champagne. “You can grab food and come back here to finish the night,” Brown said.
So, take your pick: There are so many places in Boerne to perch on a bar stool, pull up a chair, sit out on a patio, recline in comfort — all to sip a favorite brew, wine or cocktail.
One thing about Boerne’s nightlife: Each stop is unique unto itself. Get busy and see them all.
The Hill Country Mile boasts several renowned galleries, including Carriage House Gallery, celebrating 22 years of being owned and operated by 11 artist/partners and voted Best of the Best three years running.
Texas Treasures Fine Art Gallery, is home to highly acclaimed national and international artists out of three different shops, all located on the Hill Country Mile.
Hill Country Pottery, inspired by the artist’s passion for epicurean delights and good times with friends and family shared around food, and MixHaus Gallery — a contemporary art gallery focusing on mixed media and cross-discipline artists, celebrating the story behind the artist’s process — both are located in Comfort.
Hill Country Council for the Arts currently sponsors and hosts, the Boerne Art Waddle each Memorial Day Weekend, and Boerne BierFest in late September welcoming the traditional Oktoberfest season.
Art AfterHours applied arts classes, and Mini Workshops, providing immersion instruction in fine arts genres and styles, are held at The Classroom on the grounds of The AgriCultural Museum and Arts Center. Opportunities are available for convention groups for a few hours of instruction in a number of media while visiting Boerne.
Boerne’s Art Alfresco was created through the community’s Public Art Master Plan. It is an outdoor, or “fresh air” exhibit of public art. The sculptures are located throughout the historic Hill Country Mile and along Boerne’s trail system, making the discovery of each piece a walkable adventure for visitors and residents alike.
Boerne Community Theatre, as vibrant as ever after three decades of stage productions, provides excellent excuses to get out of the house and into a live-performance venue with a strong cadre of adults and teens who consistently bring down the house.
Local high schools also have talented theater departments and produce outstanding stage performances during the school year.
The Boerne Concert Band, a non-profit organization that provides a venue for local musicians to present popular music for family-oriented audiences to enjoy, puts on several performances annually, currently held in the Boerne Middle School North auditorium.
The Boerne Village Band — the oldest continuous German Band in the world outside of Germany — fills the air with music every other Tuesday night through June and July. The Abendkonzertes are held at Main Plaza in Boerne. Audience members bring folding chairs or blankets and lounge around the gazebo to experience the nostalgia of waltzes and polkas. All concerts are free.
Patrick Heath Public Library hosts a “Live! At the Library” series of concerts and events for guests to enjoy throughout the year and held at the Amphitheater behind the library. Bring chairs, blankets, food, drinks and enjoy this free family entertainment. Local microbreweries and wineries provide weekend music performances throughout the year.
Boerne Independent School District’s entire music program has received national recognition, as well as individual performance honors. Two high school choirs, both winners at highest competition levels, provide regular opportunities for nights of great vocals.
The district’s middle school choirs, that also score high competitively as well, do the same. Respected orchestral programs at the secondary school level also make for wonderful evenings of music.
Each year, the Boerne ISD arts department takes over the Heath Public Library, showcasing hundreds of works of art produced by students from kindergarten to high school seniors.
