A Letter to Our Readers In the interest of not being a party to the fake news thing, it’s probably best to get one thing out of the way, right off the bat. The tag line on this month’s cover notwithstanding, there aren’t really aren’t articles specifically about firewalks in this issue – but, hey, you try putting out a hundred thirty issues of a fine natural magazine over nearly eleven years, and see if you don’t start running out of tag lines, too. There is, however, a basic rule of journalism at work here.
When in doubt, go for the metaphor. As metaphors go, it’s not a bad one for February. You got your Year of the Fire Rooster that cranked up at the end of January, not long after the last, horrible craziness left over from the Year of the Fire Monkey finally swirled down the drain – and, of course, you got your Valentine’s Day, mid-month. Matters of the heart aren’t all that dissimilar to talking a deep breath and walking across the coals, so gird your loins – and welcome to the Firewalk. –Michael Abedin

by Dr. Joe Vitale
But it also created confusion.
It’s hard to believe The Secret book and movie came out over ten years ago. They’re still circulating, still changing lives. I’m forever grateful for The Secret, whether I was in it or not. It triggered an awakening, a conversation, and hope.
Many people watched the movie or read the book, tried what they learned, and said, “It didn’t work. And that’s the problem. The Secret was only an introduction to a principle. It revealed the Law of Attraction to the masses. But that’s all it did – introduce the idea. It didn’t offer the depth needed to understand the law, and use it to create a new reality. Even ten years later, I see people not fully understand what I call “the missing secret. In short, you get what you unconsciously believe, not necessarily what you consciously say. In other words, intentions are one thing, but you need to know about counter-intentions. Let me explain. Intentions are what you consciously declare. “I intend to increase my sales, is an intention. “I intend to create a bigger business, is an intention. Intentions are powerful – they engage the mind, rally the emotions, help create momentum. Intentions are good.

Dr. Joe Vitale, a star in the movie The Secret, is a bestselling author, musician, speaker, coach and more. His latest book is The Miracle: Six Steps to Enlightenment. You can have his free e-book, Attract Money Now, at www.AttractMoneyNow.com His main website is www.MrFire.com
6
Counter-intentions are in the subconscious/unconscious mind. If you unconsciously believe money is evil, money is bad, or I don’t deserve good things, you’ll veto your intentions. You’ll block them. You’ll unconsciously sabotage your own success. You won’t even know it. You’ll blame your lack of success on other people, politicians, the current economic climate, even The Secret.
That’s the missing secret. You can meditate, visualize, affirm, wear amulets all day long, but you won’t attract what you want while limiting beliefs remain in your deeper mind. The unconscious is far more powerful than the conscious. Numerous books on neuroscience prove this fact.
To attract what you consciously want, you have to clean up your unconscious beliefs. The movie and book never addressed this issue. Again, they were only introducing an idea. We need the sequel to The Secret to understand how to actually begin to manifest the reality we want on a consistent basis. Since there’s never been a sequel to the movie (there have been numerous follow-up books), here’s a formula to help you make better use of the Law of Attraction.
First: State your intention. What do you want to have, do, or be? Be clear. Be specific. Declare it. Own it. Write it down. That’s your goal, intention, and outcome. It should ignite the fire of desire in you.
Second: Note what objections surface. What thoughts come to mind? Do you have doubts? Fears? Concerns? Be honest. Really look within. Stating your intention will trigger limiting thoughts about attracting it. Those are clues to your limiting beliefs. Welcome them. Write those down, too.
Third. Clear the limiting beliefs. Ask, “Do I believe this? Or, “Where’s the evidence for this belief? Act like a good detective, unearth your reasons, beliefs, doubts, fears, concerns. Then question the evidence. Question the reasons. What you’re doing is dismantling your own belief system. You’ll weaken it, and eventually clear it. You’ll deprogram yourself. You’ll rewire your own mind.
You will be free. This last step is something you can accomplish using a wide variety of techniques. I’ve written many books to help, such as my newest, The Miracle: Six Steps to Enlightenment.
Modern brain sciences prove you can change your mind. The ways and means to get clear of counter-intentions are readily available, proven to work. But it’s essential to do this step to attract what you intend – or something even better. Again, I’m grateful for The Secret, and you should be, too. It may not have revealed the missing secret, but it paved the way for a whole new world of transformation.
Advanced Ho’oponopono. Another method of clearing is detailed in my two most popular books, hands-down – Zero Limits and AT Zero. Both told the incredible, true story of Dr. Hew Len, an unusual therapist who helped heal an entire ward of mentally ill criminals in a Hawaii state hospital. His method is the Hawaiian spiritual tool called Ho’oponopono. The four phrases of this technique – I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you – are easy and practical. Just say them inside yourself while addressing your connection to the Divine. That alone works miracles. But there’s more to it. I’ve studied and practiced this method over ten years, taught it, written about it, shared it in movies. I’ve also gone beyond it. There are more methods, phrases, tools, and techniques to help you relax into the moment and be at peace.
There are deeper ways to attract miracles. I’ll share them at a private event March 10-12 in the natural beauty of Red Corral Ranch in Wimberley, just outside Austin in the Hill Country – and I won’t be doing it alone. I’ll have Austin All Natural publisher Michael Abedin speak about Reiki, Bach flower remedies, and forgiveness. Michael’s a terrific storyteller and riveting speaker. His insights startle and soothe. (He also tells good jokes.) Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon will discuss Ho’oponoponoinfused music and its ability to align spiritual vibration, clean data/memory, and clear your ethereal passages for Divine inspiration. We’ve made several albums of divine music, and will share how music heals and helps. Dr. Steve G. Jones, Clinical Hypnotherapist, will teach about hypnosis and reprogramming yourself, enabling you to do better Ho’oponopono, and share an empowering hypnosis session. Ever gone to a seminar, and later the buzz wears off and you’re back where you were? Chuck Pennington will show how to take the buzz home with you and maintain it, keeping your thoughts and actions in harmony with the energy of the weekend. Harry B-Happy Bartholomew is a former Buddhist Monk, music producer, and energy healer, practicing and teaching Reiki, Adhisthana healing, Medicine Buddha healing, and 42 Eyes and Hands of the Great Compassion Sutra. He’ll do empowerments using gongs, singing bowls, and Ho’oponopono, giving everyone a crystal infused with the clearing and healing energy of the event.

ell, yeah – but fire is a pretty powerful tool for the good guys, too. When the Devil’s around, a squirt gun won’t really make much of a dent. You have to fight fire with fire, as they say. It’s tricky thing, though. Build a fire in the middle of your living room to keep away the cold and the dark, and you can burn down the whole house. Build it in a fireplace, though, and the warmth and the light can keep the boogeyman at bay.
It’s all a matter of focus. Etymology, the origin of a word, is also a pretty handy tool, especially when you’re trying to burn up a couple of columns of a page eight intro to your February issue. The Latin origin of the word focus, for instance, refers to a fireplace, a hearth, a place to concentrate and contain the light and heat of fire to make it useful and beneficial, instead of destructive. Any idea where your own hearth might be, your own place where your fire can burn? Knock that last h off hearth – whaddaya got?
Aim for the heart. Greek mythology says Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and gave it to humankind. It also says he got his innards eaten by an eagle every day for his trouble, until the hero Heracles – Hercules, as the Romans called him – rescued him. Heroes and heroines come in a lot of different guises, but they have something in common – a heart that’s on fire. The Devil isn’t the enemy of heroism – without him, there might not be a need for heroes. The real enemy of heroism is complacency. Ring any bells? The Year of the Fire Rooster kicked off January 28, earlier than the usual February start of the next round of Chinese cosmology, following the chaos created by that little devil Fire Monkey. The Chinese say Fire Rooster struts through the ruins of all that chaos, sparks flying from his spurs. Arrogance, cockiness, and an occasionally casual relationship with the truth are the orders of the day.

Fire with fire. How to navigate such times? Well, it’s a pretty good bet the meek won’t be inheriting the Earth in a Fire Rooster year, and, to paraphrase Brother Dave Gardner, they’d probably be afraid to come get it even if they did. How to navigate such times? Well, it’s a pretty good bet the meek won’t be inheriting the Earth in a Fire Rooster year, and, to paraphrase Brother Dave Gardner, they’d probably be afraid to come get it even if they did. A heart on fire with the passion of love, courage, and purpose is a sacred heart, winged and crowned, and it’s a pretty handy amulet to wear when the Fire Rooster crows. It just takes a quick switch of a couple of letters to turn scared into sacred, and you know what to do. Get focused, get a little cocky if you have to, then take a breath and walk across the coals. It’s cooler on the other side.
It’s happening again… One of the strangest TV shows ever was Twin Peaks, David Lynch’s 1990 surreal mix of horror film, soap opera, and bizarre humor. It’s happening again, as one of the episodes was entitled, in a special cable series starting in May. Austin photographer and video producer Phillip Patterson, who bears a more than passing resemblance to the character Leland, is writing and shooting short clips based on the cult classic – sort of an alternate alternate reality. Wanna see a local natural magazine publisher as Killer Bob, a scary entity with long greyish hair, crazy eyes, and an evil grin? Go to @phillipjrphoto on Instagram. Come Fire Walk with us. It’s scary – wear your burning heart.

SEEING UNCERTAINTY AS A GIFT The best sentence Carl Jung ever wrote by John Connor You’re either asking, “Who the hell is Carl Jung, and what’s the big deal on one sentence?” Or, “Who the hell do you think you are, buckaroo, to decide Jung’s best thought?” Let’s get to the grandfather of spiritual psychology’s sentence, which is this. Each is deceived by the sense of finality peculiar to the stage of development at which he stands. Boom. Mic drop. (Neither of which Jung would ever say.) But I will. Because on page 46 of Jung’s Modern Man in Search of a Soul, that sentence came off the page at me like a right hook to the third eye. At the same time, it was also a healing salve. The wording is a bit stuffy, but it works. Each person is under a delusion that they are done, they have completely – or nearly completely (or nearly completely) figured out life. Or politics. Or religion.
You know people who are pretty naked about this, don’t you? They’re the gross examples – the blowhards, the arrogant, the just-listen-to-me-and-you’ll-have-a-clue goofballs. In politics, they’re easy to spot. Their favorite word is moron, and their favorite sport is condescension. In religion, they’re a little subtler – clergy and lay writers of all stripes unwashed who just who feign compassion for the great unwashed, who just aren’t there yet. When religious people are unsubtle, you’ll be declared Hell-bound and dismissed. You and me, we’re not them. Yet, sadly, we don’t get to project this condition off ourselves so easily. The enemy of realization, of understanding, is not ignorance. It’s not lack of learning.
The enemy of understanding is certainty. It’s easier to see this certainty in ourselves when we look in our past. For instance, I would like here and now to apologize to anyone I ever talked to when I was nineteen years old. Although I didn’t go around saying it, I was quite insightful, if you please. And if I could just tell you what is True about the world, you’d be much happier, let me tell you. It reminds me of a line from Don’t Cry, an old Seal song about younger days. We were older then, and we lived a life without any doubt. The challenge for many of us is to grow out of that certainty, out of our assumption that knowing about stuff – how the world works, God, global politics, love – is of any real value. The illusion is that certainty is a sign of smartness. Really, the opposite is true.
10
At a men’s spirituality group I attended for a few months, there was a bright guy who was easy-going and humble about his own thoughts and ideas. But when he would launch into concepts he learned reading philosopher Ken Wilbur, he would drop into this certainty zone, into this mode of instructing us in What Is True – almost scolding us. (I never heard too much, because I stopped listening when he got that way.)
Deceived by a sense of finality. If the ways of the world and the things of the spirit look the same to me as they did twenty years ago, I am trapped in certainty. And no, it’s not that everything is fluid and unknowable and relative, either. But what I realized is that it is literally impossible to learn anything about a subject when you’re certain about it. An internal sense of finality is a sign of presumption – of complete understanding. Me, I’d rather listen to you tell me your tentative, halfbaked, incomplete notion of how romantic relationships work. Or explore with you different ideas of the nature of God, without either of us trying to win a Truth battle. I’d rather hear from someone who is willing to look foolish, and risk saying an unexpressed thought. And yes, maybe when you do that, you wind up metaphorically doing a face plant into the mud. Then, though – then tell me what you see, when you raise your head and look up from the ground, with the new eyes of experience. What’s what in the world of Cannabis CZ .JDIBFM "CFEJO Quick quiz – what natural substance is used to make paper, textiles, rope, biofuel, construction material, human and animal food, medicine, supplements, and kitty litter, just for starters? (Hint – it’s a plant, needs way less water than other crops, doesn’t need fertilizer or pesticides, and grows like a weed.)
The “weed part nailed it, huh? It’s good ol’ Cannabis sativa, the new celebrity of the plant world, poised to become one of the biggest moneymakers since Texas wildcatters hit the first oil gusher down Spindletop way, over a century ago. Not all cannabis, however, is created equal. Some strains get you high and some don’t. All have potential health benefits and different degrees of legality, based on their percentage of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the psychoactive ingredient that gets you stoned). Here’s a quick tutorial, from information provided by the Texas Hemp Industries Association: t 8IFO 5)$ MFWFMT BSF PS MFTT OPU FOPVHI to have any psychoactive effect), it’s hemp, or industrial hemp. t 0WFS BOE VTFE GPS NFEJDBM QVSQPTFT JU TIPVME be referred to as medicinal cannabis. t *MMFHBM VTF IBT IJTUPSJDBMMZ CFFO DBMMFE marijuana, although some states allowing recreational use prefer adult use cannabis.
Seems straightforward enough. You’d think – but the first (and maybe last) straightforward, rational law about cannabis dates back to America’s first colony in 1609, when King James himself issued a decree that each Jamestown colonist be required to maintain one hundred hemp plants, for export as fiber. (George Washington later grew hemp as one of his main cash crops.) Fast forward to 1930. Alcohol prohibition ends, and a giant enforcement apparatus suddenly finds itself with nothing to enforce. Its new head honcho, Harry Anslinger, mounts a campaign to get the Demon Weed to take the place of the Demon Rum and her intoxicating cousins. He’s aided and abetted by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, an early pioneer of fake news whose sensationalist yellow journalism rags were printed on paper made from wood pulp – an industry threatened, then and now, by industrial hemp. The end result of their efforts was a patchwork of contradictory, often Draconian, state and federal laws lumping THC-rich marihuana (as the feds still spell it) with virtually THC-free hemp.
14
That’s starting to change – kinda sorta. Federal law still considers marij(h)uana illegal, although a growing number of states have legalized it for medical and/or recreational use. (You can identify the latter by the sound of cash registers ringing.) Hemp and its derivative products, however, are perfectly legal to sell, even though hemp is mostly illegal to grow in this country. That may be a good thing in one way, since it means most hemp products come from places that aren’t buying the line perpetuated by Monsanto and them about pesticides and genetic modification of plants. Hemp oil is sometimes referred to as hemp CBD oil, or simply CBD oil. CBD is cannabidiol, one of many non-psychoactive elements of hemp, which has about a three thousand year history of being used for medicinal purposes, internally and externally.
The Oil Bidness. Even though research in this country has been hampered by mostly politically motivated legal restrictions (and the economic pressures behind them that protect entrenched industries), there’s still a wide range of applications documented by research and users. As it turns out, your body has its very own endocannabinoid system, one that’s in close cahoots with your immune system, nervous system, and mental and physical well-being. CBD has the potential to nourish that endocannabinoid system, and the potential for so many medical uses it would be hard to list them all in one article. Hemp oil is probably the most efficient way to ingest CBD, particularly when it’s delivered in a liposomal form, encapsulated in the same phospholipids that make up the foundation of your cells – meaning your cells recognize it and suck it up, bypassing the blood-brain barrier, and you get more (and faster) absorption. Regardless of what form it takes, hemp starts out the same color as money. When there’s enough green to be made, research and development follows – and it’s nice to see it follow something with a long history of beneficial uses. COYOTE MEDICINE
The new “Truth”
by Christina Allen In a world filled with personal and political agendas, the concept that there’s an undeniable, absolute truth has lost its moorings. Instead, we have hints of the truth, spun in one direction or the other, all with the intention of swaying an audience. Then we have fake news, meant to deliberately mislead – and, finally, we have gaslighting. Gaslighting is perhaps the most sinister of these deceptions. It’s a means of consciously manipulating the truth, in hopes of instilling doubt. Rather than challenging us to question the source of our information, however, as fake news does, it aims at making us question our own perceptions, memory, and sanity. The term comes from a 1938 stage play called Gas Light, and the 1944 film version, Gaslight. In the story, a husband dims the gaslights in the attic while secretively searching for something. His wife notices the flickering, and brings it to his attention. He insists her perceptions are faulty, and even suggests she’s insane.
Similarly, the ground beneath our feet is shifting, daily. At no time in U.S. history has there ever been more dispute about what the truth is, and is not. Truth used to be the cornerstone of our personal integrity, the currency of our word, the backbone of our handshakes. To be sure, most truths are somewhat subjective, as any two people will report an accident differently, but there are still indisputable facts. Every good journalist struggles to see past personal filters and biases, to report these facts neutrally. What we see today, however, is a flood of fake news about accidents that didn’t happen, making us question the ones that did. And then there is the gaslighting, which calls into question the reliability of our fact-gathering institutions.
Creating doubt is a way of cracking the foundation of our social structure. In Native American traditions this is called Coyote Medicine. By creating a house of mirrors, where truth is overlooked as more lies, and lies are mistaken for truth,

the trickster undermines our trust in authority. Everything, and every one, becomes suspect. The Q’ero Indians have prophesied a time like this, when the world is turned upside down. They call it a Pachakuti. The good news is, we’re all wired to be our own authorities. One side of our brain, the left, is designed to take in information, sort through it, and build upon it through logic, as a serial processor. It takes a fact and says, If this… then that, creating a whole train of thought. We spend most of our early education developing strong left brains. The right side, however, is what we call a parallel processor. Whole chunks of insight land here, completely formed, in a kind of knowing. It’s the home of insight, creativity, and intuition. Many of us feel this in our bodies.
Our minds may bend and sway with deceptive logic, but our intuition does not. All shamans know this. Knowing the limits of the left brain, that it can only assume, derive, and imply, they use their intuition to track down the energy of an event. Everything that is said, and done, leaves a trail of energetic footprints behind it. Trackers hone in, and follow these trails. For many of us, our own intuitions get clouded by our egos. We mistake the voices of our fears for our intuition. Deep down inside, however, we all feel truth in our guts. Our bodies do not lie. Instead of trying to make sense of all the illusions out there, our work is better spent addressing our own fears. We must find the clarity it takes to anchor in, like lighthouses in a storm, and trust our guts. Yes, the lights are flickering! Trust in your own authority. Beep beep! Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). NDE Dead by accident. Back on purpose. by Matt DeBow A blind person sees for the first time during a Near Death Experience (NDE), describing the hospital emergency room in detail. While clinically dead, they connect with a long-deceased relative they never met, describing their characteristics perfectly and conveying messages about information they could have never known.
What is this telling us? Spiritually Transformative Experiences (STE) during an NDE have happened right in our own backyard. San Marcos resident Pat Johnson drowned kayaking on the Blanco River, making front-page news in Austin. Trisha Barker died in an Austin auto accident and was featured on A & E and National Geographic. NDE Symposium host Edward Salisbury experienced looking down at himself from above after crashing his 1967 Pontiac Firebird, becoming perplexed and wondering, “If that’s my body, then who am I?”

They all believe they were in an eternal dimension. There, they connected with deceased friends, relatives, angels – and in some cases perceived God. They feel compelled to share their astounding experiences, because they’ve gained such soulful enlightenment during their NDE and STE. Pat Johnson drives home an important point. “It’s what the NDE teaches us about living, and how this wisdom can improve one’s life.” This is probably the single most important factor of these experiences, commonly overlooked. Spiritually Transformative Experiences occur in many shapes and sizes, from a subtle whisper or epiphany, to being launched right out of the body in a tragic accident. Upon entering a new realm of reality, the person realizes they’re dead, but are perplexed because their consciousness is fully intact. Trisha Barker, author of the book Healed, about her NDE, was attending UT Austin when she died in a horrific auto accident. Upon coming back to life she remembered an amazing journey. “At the end of my life-review, I ended up in a vividly green, lush, heavenly landscape. Much like my spirit body felt eternal, the grass, trees, and the natural landscape of heaven appeared deeply and completely alive…”
She’s not the only one. These experiences are more common than you think. It’s reported that millions of Americans have taken this journey and come back to talk about it. Pamela Kircher, MD, author of Love in the Link on NDE and dying, is a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and speaks nationally on integrating complementary medicine for end-of-life issues. She developed guidelines for healthcare providers to support people who have NDEs, where there’s a huge vacuum in the medical industry. Medical professionals are not prepared to cope or communicate with patients that have an NDE. When this occurs in a medical environment, doctors don’t know how to deal with it, mainly because there’s no training or medical literature on it. Being an MD who’s had an NDE, she’s more than qualified to develop needed information. These are just a handful of the people addressing the growing awareness of STEs and NDEs, and how these lifechanging experiences are affecting our culture as a whole. The NDE Symposium, April 7-9, provides one-on-one opportunities to meet these NDE presenters through a social mixer, lunch, dinner, and presentations, and hear about what they saw on the other side and receive their message of inspiration. Other activities include vendors, yoga, meditation, and tribal drumming. Wimberley Community Center in Wimberly, Texas. Free admission Friday night. CANDIDA CATCH-22 Can a fungus be good for you?
CZ .JDIBFM "CFEJO
In Joseph Heller’s 1961 World War II novel Catch-22, American bomber crews keep having the number of insanely dangerous missions they have to fly raised, right before being relieved. Only way out of flying the extra missions is to go to the flight surgeon and ask to be declared crazy and unfit for duty. There’s a catch, though, Catch-22. Asking not to fly is the act of a rational mind, which means you’re not crazy, so you get sent back to duty. According to some researchers, there might be a Catch-22 going on in your body if you’ve been battling candida – particularly if you’ve been exposed to mercury poisoning.
Manage to get rid of candida, and you’re back to dealing with mercury, starting another round of candida, unless and until you get rid of the mercury, too. Get rid of either of them too quickly, and your system may go into overload. (That might even be a Catch-23.) Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses state of the art technology to remove mercury and other heavy metals from a patient’s mouth without exposure to patients or staff, following it with intravenous Vitamin C therapy, acupressure, and dietary counseling to reduce further exposure. He then offers a comprehensive program to eliminate mercury from a patient’s entire system by ramping up the immune system, naturally and safely supporting excretion with vitamin C, R-Lipoic acid, glutathione, natural binders for eliminating toxins from the bowel, and phytonutrient antioxidants.
There’s no question mercury is toxic.
Liposomes.
Oh my Candida We could make it together – Tony Orlando and Dawn, Candida
Strangely, there’s controversy over getting rid of it, but that’s not the catch. According to one school of thought, mercury damages a cell’s energy production and its ability to detoxify itself. The cell grows weak, can’t function properly, and may die unless it gets help. Unfortunately, the help often comes in the form of bacteria or fungi that can bond large amounts of mercury within their cell walls. You then have to deal with a pesky, chronic fungal infestation, however, the dreaded Candida albicans, usually thought to be from consuming too much sugar or yeasty things, or taking antibiotics that kill off beneficial bacteria that keep it in check. If you’ve rigorously avoided those foods and would only take an antibiotic if your life quite literally depended on it and you still have candida, after trying every cleanse and remedy there is – it may be doing you a favor by gobbling up its own weight in mercury. Wait, you say – you never had amalgam fillings, or had them removed. If, however, your parents had them, if you (or they) received vaccinations with thimerosal as a preservative, or if you had amalgam fillings removed without strict precautions, you could still have toxic levels.
Here’s the catch. Leaving candida alone to get rid of mercury is sort of like hiring Hell’s Angels to do security at a rock concert – you may have a whole new set of problems on your hands. Once a candida cell gets full, it may toss the mercury out the back door, but it also may release it, in more toxic forms.
The elimination program uses what Carpenter calls “the highest efficiency delivery vehicle in medicine right now – liposomal delivery. Liposomes are made of phospholipids – the basic building block of cell membranes – with encapsulated nutritional compounds enclosed, making them more bio-available than other delivery vehicles like traditional pills and herbs. This means you actually get more of the product into your cells.” Getting the mercury (and the lead, aluminum, and other metals) out of your system can free up your immune system to deal with candida and other chronic conditions. Carpenter, in fact, agrees with a statement by Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD, a leading researcher of metal toxicity and its connection with chronic infections, illness, and pain. “As soon as anybody has any type of medical illness or symptom, whether physical or emotional, amalgam fillings should be removed and mercury residues should be eliminated from the body, especially the brain.” And, yes, there really was a hit song called Candida in 1970, by Tony Orlando and Dawn – and once you’ve heard the lyrics, nothing will eliminate them from your brain. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, safe mercury removal, and natural heavy metal elimination using liposomal delivery. ADRENAL HORMONES How are yours?
CZ %S 5SFWPS #PUUT A functional wellness clinic can tell a lot about what type of hormone imbalance might be going on with a client as soon as they walk through the front door. Physical appearances can offer many clues about what’s going on internally, and what hormone systems might be falling into a state of disease. A person with adrenal hormone dysfunction has a tendency to carry a lot of very stubborn belly fat – the flop over the belt type of belly fat. It doesn’t matter how many crunches you do or how much time you spend on the treadmill or exercising, that belly simply will not go away, because the adrenal glands and hormones are actually creating that kind of fat. Adrenal hormone dysfunction also tends to cause skinny legs. If you’re exercising, you’ll notice you’re burning muscle from your glutes and thighs before you lose an ounce of fat from the belly. Finally, a person with adrenal hormone dysfunction looks stressed and tired, because their adrenal glands aren’t regulating energy and blood sugar very well. This is a person who has the tendency to run around, almost as if you’re in a constant state of chaos, because your get up and go got up and left, and your flight or flight response is in overdrive.
It’s important to test and understand how your adrenals function. Most Americans are under stress. We need to properly evaluate adrenal function so we can start to take proactive measures toward improving our health. Most people with adrenal dysfunction don’t have a true disease or pathology related to adrenal glands. However, the fast-paced American lifestyle does create a state of disease that leads to an accumulation of stress on the adrenal system. That can then lead to a host of other health problems. With our current lifestyle, most of us live all day, every day, under stress. Answer a few questions to determine if you have symptoms that would indicate adrenal dysfunction: Do you struggle to manage stress? Do you wake up tired, and tell people you’re not a morning person? Do you rely on coffee or caffeine to get you started in the morning? Do you crave salty foods? Do you finally fall asleep at night but find you wake up in the middle of the night?
20
If you answered yes to all or most of these questions, you could be experiencing symptoms of adrenal dysfunction. Before going into the functional approach to supporting adrenal health, let’s briefly cover the conventional medical approach to addressing an adrenal problem. If you have a disease or pathology of the adrenal gland, you need medical interventions. If you have a disease like Addison’s or Cushing’s, for instance, there are appropriate medical interventions to manage these conditions – so please don’t misunderstand the functional approach recommendations offered here. These are not designed to address true pathologies of the adrenal glands. However, as mentioned before, most people with adrenal problems aren’t dealing with a true pathology. If there’s no real disease or pathology, there really isn’t much the medical system can do. The typical recommendation will be, “Well, you probably just need to relax. Go on a vacation. That’s fine, and may be helpful, but it doesn’t get down to the true underlying problem of why you’re struggling.
The two systems that are keys to supporting the adrenal system are digestion and blood sugar management. Often times, individuals with adrenal dysfunction have digestive issues – food sensitivities and/or damage to the digestive lining, as well as blood sugar imbalances. Key lifestyle and exercise recommendations for adrenal dysfunction include sleeping eight hours a night, getting five to seven minutes of high-intensity exercise upon waking, and getting off caffeine. There are many more diet, supplemental and lifestyle changes you can make if you’re struggling with adrenal dysfunction. If you suspect any type of hormone imbalance, get proper testing to find out the correct system dysfunction – and the root cause of the symptoms you’re experiencing. Trevor Botts is founder and clinic director of Inspire Wellness Center, 13740 Research Blvd, Ste. L-4, offering natural, noninvasive wellness programs through lifestyle enrichment rather than disease management. He holds a doctorate in Chiropractic, with post-graduate training in functional blood chemistry, clinical nutrition, and fitness. Inspire offers free weekly seminars and dinners each month, explaining different options for wellness and quality of life. 3471 BOE JOGP t XXX *OTQJSF"VTUJO DPN
What
language
does your body speak? by Norma Bell-Bandy Your body is speaking all the time. Often, others get the message before you know you’ve spoken it, from your body language. How do you get messages from your body? What do you notice in the movements or posture of others? Listening and tuning in to the unspoken language of the body can develop increased intuition, and awareness of yourself and others.
So much of conversation is non-verbal. It’s not always wise to share everything you think, but the body seldom lies, and someone whose posture’s stuck in a particular expression may not be conveying the message felt in the moment – it may be trauma from the past, keeping the body stuck in a holding pattern. The body has a memory, and unconscious reactions to everything, emotional or physical. There’s an abundance of research showing the body is an expression of the nervous system, a language into itself. Reading or listening to your own sensations is an art, developed with practice. Learning to see and listen to another person’s body enhances your relationships. Rolfers do this before and after a session, to help clients become more aware of their body and its message. As you practice tuning into your body, you’ll find another avenue into your own truths. When given the freedom to move, surprising truths are often revealed. Rolfing is a means to the physical freedom and emotional presence needed to listen to your own body, and learn from the postural expression of others. Pay attention to your body’s language, posture, and sensations. Don’t let pain be your only translator – listen to the hints before pain has to yell to get your attention.
Be your own body whisperer. Listen and learn from subtleties. Feel temperature changes. Notice the impulse to cross your arms, tilt your head, lace your fingers. Notice what your body feels like when you’re excited, nervous, anxious, curious, shy, balanced, imbalanced. Paying attention to your own body’s language, as well as others, deepens your relationship and understanding. What better thing to do in the month of love – and why not for the rest of the year, too? by Sharabella Fini What’s love got to do, got to do with it? – Tina Turner, What’s Love Got to Do With It Good question. An even better one might be, which kind of love? Isn’t it all one and the same? To understand the energy of love, we have to look at our innermost nature, our divine essence. Love flows through it like an ocean, endless, embracing, all-allowing. It can be stormy at times, or very still, an absolute state of letting everything be. It is goodness without distinction. In meditation, in energy healing, in practices like qigong, you come nearest to a pure experience of this state of goodness without distinction, of absolute calm. The breath, body, and mind flow in harmony. This state usually seems temporary, though, because love must exists in conjunction with the blissful vital force, the unifying energy that creates and nourishes everything you perceive, and keeps things in the shape they are.
If reality were bricks, love would be the cement. All forms of energy have certain vibrations, and the energy of love can never be separated from the vibrations of the vital force holding everything together. Without it, reality can lose its balance. Proper nutrition, exercise, and relaxation are vital ingredients for a long and healthy life, but the fourth ingredient, love, adds just as much to your energy and wellbeing – without it, all your healthy practices can fall short of their full potential. Be mindful of the vibrations of everything you do, and realize those vibrations are often a back and forth between two poles, for the purpose of merging them more closely – and eventually uniting them. When you practice your qigong, when you meditate, when you receive an energetic healing session, turn your focus and intention to loving thoughts and feelings, and witness the changes in yourself and your surroundings. At a certain stage, you’ll begin to realize you’re doing all things in love, and that love truly is reality. Then, your task will simply be to remain in that state of love through mindfulness. Sharabella Fini is an energy medicine practitioner, Reiki Master, certified Sheng Zhen Gong qigong teacher, and an artist whose paintings and photography reflect her passion for energy work. She teaches classes at AOMA and other holistic centers. For a schedule of her classes or to schedule an energy healing session, email shz25@sbcglobal.net or call (512) 825-7799. www.sharabella.com

Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, I have been with a wonderful woman the last two years, and we really enjoy our life together. However, we have our own individual directions. I have recently become a chaplain at my church. I have enjoyed reading, developing inner self, and listening to many guest speakers. This has become a powerful direction for me. My challenge is, how am I able to utilize and intersect this with everyday life, business life, and family? Jim, 70, Austin, TX Dear Jim, It looks like you are at a crossroads with ordinary life and your spiritual life. You were born to be a minister, a soothsayer, and very much a prophet. In your daily meditation say, “The Universe is my contact. I bring my contact into my temple. My contact lets me know how to intercede with my family and my spiritual authority.” As you say that positive affirmation, your daily activities are going to change, because there is a great light with you – and always has been. And, you are in line to teach and write several books via the light. Your guides are Sanat Kumara and Hilarion. Dear Ashtara, I feel like I am supposed to accomplish something with the guidance of St. Germain. He keeps coming to me and showing up in my life. Essentially, I feel there is something he wants me to know. And after I find out, what am I supposed to do? Also, there is a book called Daily Meditations that is in Spanish, and I wondered if I am supposed to translate it. Patricia, 65, Austin, TX Dear Patricia, It looks to us like you have a destiny to fulfill, therefore, you must start writing a book via the Mastership, cultured by St. Germain. You have been given many experiences over the last three and a half years that could have already propelled you into a higher dimension, to write several outstanding books. You also have an innate ability to transcribe, via the Light Systems above. You are a selected guru on Earth. If you would like to translate Daily Meditations, you will receive continued praise. Your Master Teachers are Jesus, Gabriel, and Ashtar.

Dear Ashtara, Is my garden going to be productive this year? Kelly, 44, Austin, TX Dear Kelly, Your garden is going to be so productive this year that you will do something else extraordinary. You are going to plant more of a seasonal and productive garden that encompasses your magnanimous energy to grow things. The result is going to be more magnificent than you know. So, the class you are taking and the energy that you are expending is exactly who you are. You were born to become a horticulturist or agriculturist. Your highest teachers are Gabriel and Ashtar. Dear Ashtara, What messages do the Masters have for me? Fino, 57, Austin, TX Dear Fino, It looks to me like you’re going to want a little bit more financially. Therefore, you are at a crossroads. Shall I quit my job and do something else or should I stay at my job? The answer is, quit when you have the opportunity, and go for the gusto. You also are going to become a developer, and when you do you will do it for about twenty-eight years. So, go with a plan that suits your fancy. You are in line for what we call ascension. Your highest teachers are Jesus, Gabriel, and Sandalfon.
Profound Psychic Readings & Healings can be scheduled (in person or phone). Questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted Psychic, profound Healer, minister, Master Teacher, speaker, and channel from the Ascended Masters and Archangels. TOXIC MASCULINITY 5IF )FBSUXBLFST $MVC XJUI ;BFMJ As far as years go, 2016 had a pretty bad rap. But it did offer us an amazing gift, a cure for denial. Our bones have long known this world is shaped by what has come to be called toxic masculinity, but on the whole we’ve not wanted to admit just how deep and how high the problem goes. Now that the Angel of Gut Checks has blown his trumpet straight into our ears, we must awaken from our stupor and begin the sacred work of healing. To do that, we need to rub our eyes a bit and re-examine what’s actually happening, and just what can be done. To that end, I offer the following advice.
For men. You’re not the bad guys, nor are you the victims. You are on a holy quest to correct an imbalance that’s been passed down to you like Adam’s fall. Please accept this quest – resist the satisfaction of declaring yourselves either exempt (which turns your light into a blind spot) or a monster (which yields your entire being to the power of its worst parts). Learn to listen to women, which is harder than it sounds. Even male allies often silence women’s reflections about abuse and trauma when the conversation shifts from the theoretical to the specific. Why is this? Because it’s less painful to regard women as being melodramatic or “just airing dirty laundry” than it is to empathize with the violence that’s wounded their hearts. It’s uncomfortable, it’s hard, it’s awkward – that’s the nature of deep work. To be able to do it, you must fortify your emotional boundaries every day. Check in with yourself every day to see if you like who you are, and what effect you have on the world. By doing this, you’ll feel strong enough to let women open up to you without triggering defense mechanisms that uncork anxiety, because you’ll know you’re a good man – or at least someone who’s already doing his best.
For women. We’ve tried many ways to avoid and confront this plague, but we won’t make much progress so long as we believe the issue is Us Versus Them. Just as women bear children that are created by men and women both, men bear a pain created by men and women both. This pain, this so-called toxic masculinity, is really a mistrust of the feminine, an impulse to dominate and control what is inherently wild within us. It courses through our
souls, as well – how we see and treat ourselves, other women, effeminate men, and those between gender categories. Until we can address this unconscious mistrust of our own nature, we’re ill equipped to stand by men’s sides through their existential labor. Careful here – that doesn’t mean women should stay in abusive relationships, or enable toxic behavior. It means that, as a gender, we mustn’t abandon men, leaving them with sole responsibility for scars afflicted by a culture perpetuated by us all. Instead, let’s find the self-esteem to renew faith in the power of nurturing. For so long, we’ve been told that to nurture men is to infantilize them, to oppress ourselves, and that the only way to seize our power is to be as aggressive as those we wish to bring to heel. How can the escalation stop when both sides are doubling down? Who’s strong enough to break the cycle of dehumanizing the Other?
For everyone. It’s good the turmoil of last year is inspiring so much activism – truly, our best efforts are long overdue. That said, before we can calibrate our senses to locate where our work is needed, we must first engage in an inner activism that addresses our own corruption, greed, and self-righteousness. Are you up for this? Are you brave enough to live in the space between victim and hero? Are you willing to identify with everyone else in your species, regardless of their sex? I promise, it will get easier as more and more of us step up to own our role in the problem – and share the ingredients we contribute to the cure.
