Personally, I’ve never been one to have the patience to dig through the trenches to find my next treasure. I prefer knowledgeable vendors, honest deals, and authentic antiques. When we discovered that we could take a step back in time to the way it was when the antique show first started, I knew we had to tell others about it.

Little Herman was born in San Antonio, Texas, July 2, 1957, without a name. He was soon adopted, became a Brune, and moved to Shaw’s Bend, near Columbus, Texas. It was found that he was a purchase dud, a scrawny sickly matter-eyed pup with coarse yel-

Meanwhile, Little Herman was a straight-A earner throughout his formative life, and exhibited his learned music reading trade as the Columbus, St. Paul Lutheran Church organist.

Little Herman’s appetite for Texas history, and curiosity towards the realities that drive business and people would forever capture his attention. Early on he was an apprentice scholar to the western lore of J. Frank Dobie, Will James, and A.B. Guthrie. He likewise appreciated the wordsmithing of Robert Ruark, Hemingway, Cormac McCarthy, Jack London, and countless more.

His instincts pushed him, and before his 21st birthday he was living in a cabin on Elk Creek west of Augusta, Montana, in the exact region that James and Guthrie described and that Frederick Remington and Charlie Russel depicted in their art. Little Herman added bull and saddle bronc riding to his repertoire and joined ranks with professional riders of his day.

While in the neighborhood, he also discovered the means to become a mule packer and wilderness guide.

Upon moving back to Texas, he started and closed a dairy, went to Texas A&M University to study journalism, raised his daughter Sam, and became the proprietor of the Shaw’s Bend Social Club and host to both the Texas Historical Shootist Society and the Yaupon Creek Silhouette Assn. Herman is the Chairman of the Board for the Texas Outdoor Writers Assn., and still resides in Shaw’s Bend.

isa Stansbury began her tale and a smile cracked my face. Nobody can talk to folks from South Louisiana without smiling. Immediately visions of flat-bottomed boats, crawfish, alligators, murky swamps, moss-laden trees, and hot summer days came to mind. Also, there was the recollection that Cajuns are great and happy folks. They attack the world with a song and can cuss you in French. Yes, everything below I-10 is its own culturally incorporated territory.

Lisa graduated Louisiana Tech with both BS and MA degrees. Her chosen area of expertise is as a dietician. One constant that followed Lisa is a love of antiques. “My mother loved pine, oak and walnut antiques. We spent almost an entire weekend every month looking for such items in New Orleans and in surrounding towns near Lafayette. Soon we were shopping for Country French items and learned a valuable lesson … cane-seated chairs were not the best choice when entertaining my high school friends.”

A good friend from Shreveport introduced Lisa to the antiques shows in South Texas and around 1996 or 1997 the shows in Fayetteville began. “The first show was in the SPJST Hall and we’re thrilled to be back at the same location. Fayetteville is such a great place to be! We are close to all the restaurants and gas stations.”

T

exas in the early 1830’s was ripe for a new breed of frontiersman. The westward trekking new Americans were people who feared no man and sought a brand of freedom lost to Old World Europe. While the Eastern United States was congesting with people; the American West and Texas put another one thousand miles between the raucous noisy growing pains of a new nation – cities and ports – and the peace and solitude of a wilderness unblemished by man’s hand or rules.

Jeremy Teel is a seventh generation Texan and began the rendition explaining the background of the Antique Rovers. Charlie Ham is a sixth generation Texan who wouldn’t let Jeremy get a word in edgewise and soon took over the storytelling. Charlie is also Jeremy’s Godfather.

“Our great-great-great-grandfather got here a short time prior to 1835 and was the first surveyor in Texas,” says Charlie. “Part of the old main house is still lived in. Oddly enough, we never heard of any stories or worries about Indian depredations. This was part of the Gaines Plantation. It became completely self-sufficient with doctors, lawyers, and all the help it took to run the operaANTIQUES OFF THE SQUARE |

tion. There were peach orchards, cotton, peas, and watermelons. Most of that is gone but we’re still rural with some big farms and ranches.

We’re between Palestine and Athens on the edge of the Piney Woods.

The closest town is Montalba. This country is made up of big open pastures, rolling hills, and big White and Red Oaks.”

“We’ve doubled the size of our storage area which is also a sales barn.”

Charlie Ham is a good Texan. Throughout the course of gathering interviews several other vendors expressed his willingness to help anybody any way he can – and Jeremy is right there with him!

Charlie wasn’t always in the antique business. For five years he had a restaurant and hotel in Colorado. After that, Texas voted in pari-mutuel horse racing and for 18 years the plantation became a Thoroughbred breeding farm standing five stallions and 100 or more mares. The horse barn has since been renovated into an Americana Antiques Emporium.

On the other hand, Jeremy, grew up in the antique business but was going into real estate when the 2008 housing bubble burst. That convinced him to get his auctioneers license and follow Charlie.

It was Charlie’s Mom, Jane Ham that started the family antique business.

She set up a booth at Round Top in 1978. By 1985 Charlie was also at Round Top. Jeremy defines their Americana antiques as anything made in the US that is 100 years old. “We travel a 12 state region finding our products and bring them back to sell,” says Jeremy. “We try to carry a bit of everything but specialize in Americana Primitive. Much of our inventory is small items the everyday person can afford. We’re the IKEA of the antique world. We like items that last and hold their value” “We also do medium and large pieces,” chimed in Charlie at the end.

NECESSITY INTO PASSION

R

on and Ann were in somewhat of a dilemma. They may not have realized their plight – but by 2021 standards they were in a wreck.

They were young, happy, in love, and full of vim, vigor, and ideas.

Of course, it was not 2021 and this story takes place in Collinsville, Illinois.

“We were broke when we got married,” says Ron Goldsmith. “Antiques weren’t on our radar as collectibles, but you might say we were collectors before we were dealers.

We needed cheap furniture and household goods and that meant buying second-hand stuff.”

The same principle applied to the house they bought. Ron and Ann bought a 20’x26,

two-story, 1858 log cabin in Parrottsville, Tennessee. “We were 29 years old and did all the work ourselves. We took the cabin down log by log, numbered the logs, and hauled it to Collinsville. Then we put it back up. It’s made of poplar logs which are a soft wood, but it’s insect and rot resistant. You know oak will eventually rot but not poplar. The old cabin is practically enclosed in a new house with all the add-ons that we did through the years.”

The next years were more happy years. Ann taught first grade and Ron owned a vegetable processing company. “Ann was a school teacher for 38 years, and no, after 38 years of teaching six year olds she’s not nuts!

She loves little children. There are folks in Collinsville that she taught who are grandparents.

“My company was designed for restaurants. My machines would snap peas, hull, or peel in a fraction of the time it takes people to prepare fruit and vegetables by hand.”

The antique dealing business began after retirement. “I like Texas! We were helping a friend in Giddings and he sent us to Round Top. There I met Charlie Ham and he introduced us to Fayetteville. Now – we love Fayetteville. We rent a house while we’re here and we have a storage unit. We like that the show has great amenities nearby.

“Collinsville and Fayetteville are both flat and hot! But, Collinsville has colder winters! I grew up in a German town with 200 people that reminded me of the Hill Country. Most of the people between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians, The Midwest, are food folks. They’re different than what we’ve noticed on the two coasts. Texans seem fairly uniform in personality.

“We deal anything that sells. A good standard may be that something will sell if the customer can haul it off in a van. But, I’ll sell whatever looks right. We’ve got an incredible number of auctions and estate sales that we may attend around the northern states. So many more than there are in Texas – that sometimes we take orders. But, you never know what will sell.

The other day I sold a ten-inch cannon ball.”

Legions of people from the Midwest have retired to Texas. “We come here twice a year to get warm. Then we go to Wyoming and Montana on vacation.”

The voice croons sweeter than honey, smoother than Jersey milk, and more intoxicating than your best neighbor’s distilled bourbon. You may close your eyes and hear the bees buzzing in the hibiscus while a fan on the porch cools and dries your sweaty shirt. The cadence of words breezes forward spiked with mint julep and lulls us to unconscious happiness. It’s the loving slow hum of a southern accent; and coming from a genuine lady it will incline a gentleman to climb unclimbable mountains, build unbuildable bridges, or start wars with dastardly cowards whose mother’s must answer for their upbringing! Yes, a southern lady’s accent melts hearts and is an unworldly force of reckoning.

Y’all were an integral part of Texas Independence but remember there were also a powerful bunch of Cajuns, Irish, maybe a couple of Yankees, and plenty of Texicans that fought for Texas and whipped Santa Anna.”

“Okay, I suppose that could be true,” said Doris - and Doris’ smile cruised through her words.

“Now honey, there wouldn’t be Texas if it was not for us Tennesseans,” Doris and Charles Lawrence married 47 years ago. leased property. She grew up with a barnyard of critters and savvies tending to cows, horses, pigs, mules, chickens, etc. Likewise, she is comfortable discussing cotton, corn, soybeans, and assorted row crops.

“Charles loves the farm. He’s got a sunflower field for dove hunting and he enjoys sharing the outdoors. He followed in his family business as a welder and pipefitter.

“We are blessed to live in this area – this is good land!” says Doris. “We’re also blessed that our families are all nearby. We have two daughters and eight grandchildren ages five to 22. Also, all our cousins, Charles’ brothers, and everybody’s families … everybody stays – it’s been great!

Doris has a degree in interior design from Middle Tennessee State University and swears that it helps with knowing where to place antique furniture and fixtures, as well as, helps her envision scenarios for her customers.

“I’ve been messing with antiques for 35 years. Charles got involved about 20 years ago. He likes duck decoys, hunting and fishing paraphernalia, tools, and blacksmithing. We don’t mess with too many breakables. We like stuff that’s not common but rather unique!

That’s one reason we like the Fayetteville Show. The dealers all have a niche and they all like quality pieces.

“We come from a small community that is self-contained and self-sufficient with saw mills, cotton gins, and whatever we need.

“Fayetteville reminds us of home – we really like it here!”

“Then I moved to New York.”

It was during Jan’s time in New York that she developed the notion to deal in antiques. “There were quite a few folks in the big city from the western states and they were lonesome for home. In 1989 I opened a business of western antiques and called it Hot Tamale. We brought those homesick Westerners a little bit of The Old West back to New York City.”

Thirty years later Jan is back in Texas promoting antique shows and dealing in a grand mixture of antiques. “I wouldn’t want to live in a house with just one style antique. Another simple fact is that we’re also selling to younger age groups,” says Jan. The Fayetteville Show is known for authentic and primitive antiques.

Her booth is filled with a variety of textiles dating from Victorian to Midcentury. Then there are tables, chairs, art, lighting, a kitchen bar, Americana industrial equipment, and one-of-a-kind items handmade for one specific purpose. There is a sign from a fabric shop in France, aluminum chairs from a submarine, Japanese pottery, elephant skin suitcases, a doctor’s bag, and lamps made from fire extinguishers.

Jan says, “It’s fun taking something obsolete and making it useful! If you enjoy it – that’s all that matters!”

Now, I hope I at least get a “B+” from the lady with the English degree.

I

t has come to the attention of the advertising magazine’s administration that a few of the interviewees/Fayetteville Show antique vendors are easily capable of making the interviewer/me appear to be a Dummkopf! Or, it’s also logical that I attain that position entirely on my own accord. Anyway, I’m waving a white flag! Even if we were once neighbors or kinfolks by marriage please understand the density of my occasional brain fog!

Jane Fruge surveyed the interior of the Shaw’s Bend Social Club, glanced at me, and nodded when offered a chair. Something about her seemed familiar. It wasn’t the way she was dressed or the way she moved. It had something to do with the way she inspected her surroundings. There was no disapproval in her demeanor – only deliberate evaluation and quiet intuition. She seated herself and then turned and looked directly at me.

“Thanks for coming over. I appreciate you agreeing to a sit-down interview. Now, where do you originally come from?” I asked.

“I was born and raised right here in Colorado County. I grew up in Columbus!”

My calm composure flinched. Oops! Here was somebody I was probably supposed to already know!

“Did you know Henry Brune Jr.?” she asked.

“Yes Ma’am, and then you knew Eleanor Ann, and Arthur Junior, and maybe Diane Stock! I believe they’re all about the same age.”

Jane nodded, “Yes, Henry Junior was in the group I ran around with.”

“Who were you from home?”

“He was a load master on a C-130 during Vietnam and was gone for one-and-a half years. He came home after doing hazardous duty and we moved to Washington. Our first child was born in Washington and I couldn’t wait to get back to Texas.

“I was a Rutta!”

“Judge Rutta’s daughter?”

“Ernest got a job with the Diamond Shamrock Plant and I worked in accounting for heavy equipment rentals. That all changed when, in the late 80s, I was introduced to Miles of Smiles in Mt. Belvieu!

“He was my uncle.”

“My mom loved flowers and she passed that along to me. I repped and sold florist supplies to shops all over Houston and I decided that I could have a flower shop myself, but I wanted a shop with a yard! S

ocial ideas, deep personal thoughts, recollections of past notions, and plans that span a galactic scope of future endeavors – fill the void for daydreamers and philosophers. They’re the nemesis and positive fuel for writers, photographers, artists, and anyone that practices a skill or trade that involves objective judgement and subjective conclusions. Collegiate English teachers swoon at the feet of victorious masters of enlightenment. The daily slave to mediocrity never notices or cares. But young mothers sigh with compassion when a small child sparks above the norm, and then must search pitifully for their place in line – not knowing it’s at the front.

“I came from South Houston and Pasadena. I served in the US Marines.

Then, went to college in California where I studied journalism and marketing. Later I worked in magazine publishing.

“But I’ve always had an appreciation for things from earlier times. Our tastes may change and we may migrate from one style to another – but we can never see it all.

“It’s like social archeology. I always thought Detritus would be a great name for a shop. You know the rubble on a slope at the bottom of a mountain. That’s sort of like antiques. They’re the leftovers or cultural detritus from society.

A

ntiques are a great way to express the cliché that as much as things change they remain the same. It holds true with the way we enjoy our collectibles, the generational appreciation for history, and especially in watching social behavior.

People are people and over time we see each generation inadvertently doing the same as the generations before. Young folks move towards urban opportunities and city folks that have endeavored to persevere often retire to the country.

Ellen Wolpert is the self-proclaimed new kid on the block with the antique group at the Fayetteville Antique Show. She’s done two shows and is looking forward to her third. Ellen says that the great folks at the show have taken her under their wing and she’s learned so much. Within the course of the interview, it was clear that she was an easy conversationalist and a pleasure to spend time with.

It was easy to imagine her and the other dealers laughing, working the show, and having fun! Yes, I wondered whether she was under their wing or were they wrapped around her little finger. Most likely, all the ladies at this show have the gentlemen wrapped around their little fingers!

“I grew up in Houston,” says Wolpert. “Actually, I grew up in Westbury other ladies and from that was invited to the Fayetteville Antique Show. and lived for 35 years in West University. “Of course, I miss my friends but they like coming to visit! Now, Dean and I love to go on buying trips. We have relatives in Indiana and we go to auctions and estate sales across the Midwest. We specialize in Americana Primitive and carry everything from big furniture to the tiniest knick-knacks. I suppose we have an advantage living and having storage in Fayetteville.
