Mommy savant Welcome! We would like to extend to you a warm welcome from Hoboken Smile Specialists Pediatric Dentistry and Family Orthodontics. We are very excited to be in this amazing Hoboken Community, and we are confident that you will be very pleased with the service and care we provide to your family. Dr. Kapoor’s practice provides exquisite patient care in a kind and gentle manner and strives to integrate the importance of oral health care to overall health! Tips from Dr. Kapoor: Minors under the age of 21 should see a specialist, irrespective of their ability to cooperate:

habits- nursing, bottle, thumbsucking, pacifier, etc pose your child at risk for developing oral problems, evaluate for tongue/lip ties, etc. Are baby teeth really that important to my child? It is very important to take care of baby teeth as they affect the health of our permanent teeth and overall health. Primary, or “baby,” teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to erupt. How can I prevent decay caused by nursing?

What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist? Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. A pediatric dentist has two to three years specialty training following dental school and limits his/her practice to treating children only. Pediatric dentists are primary and specialty oral care providers for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs. When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up? In order to prevent dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday. Establish child’s dental home by age 1 - create a foundation for healthy smile for life, a provider that can help if any dental injuries, provide tips on brushing especially as your child’s diet starts to include more snacks, assess cavity risk and determine when to start using fluoride toothpaste, determine which

Avoid nursing children to sleep or putting anything other than water in their bed-time bottle. Also, learn the proper way to brush and floss your child’s teeth. Take your child to a pediatric dentist regularly to have his/her teeth and gums checked. The first dental visit should be scheduled by your child’s first birthday. How do I make my child’s diet safe for his teeth? Diet plays a major role along with hygiene and genetics in determining the risk of cavities for your child. Make sure your child has a balanced diet, including one serving each of: fruits and vegetables, breads and cereals, milk and dairy products, and meat fish and eggs. Limiting the servings of sugars and starches will also aid in protecting your child’s teeth from decay. You can also ask your pediatric dentist to help you select foods that protect your children’s teeth. The doctor will help determine how there are hidden sugars in common “healthy” foods and textures that can contribute to cavities.

Nose in Jersey City on the weekends. Casey’s experience at High Tech thus far has been extremely positive. High Tech has supported Casey’s academic and personal growth allowing him to continue to mature into a smart and responsible young man. Ava (5) -is currently in Kindergarten at Hoboken Catholic. Hoboken Catholic’s nurturing environment has supported Ava’s growing independence and love for learning since she was in PK-3. After school, Ava looks forward to her ballet, acting, and gymnastics classes. Chris (3)- attended Step-by-Step drop off program before his current enrollment in Hoboken Catholic’s PK-3 program. Christopher is currently working on his cartwheels and handstands at gymnastics and is dedicated to collecting Power Rangers and “Mashems”. When did you move to Hoboken? Todd moved here in 2001 and Alanna in 2010. How have you seen the community/ neighborhood change? We live by the Monroe Center and have witnessed our neighborhood completely explode with businesses and residential buildings over the past 4 years. As many families with young children in the area, we are eagerly awaiting the construction of the Jackson Street Park! The development of the Monroe Center area is a

welcomed enhancement to the west side of town. What is your favorite neighborhood walk? Scootering from Pier A all the way to Pier 13. Tell us about your favorite neighborhood activities. We are big supporters of the town festivals! St. Anne’s Feast is probably our favorite because it is right outside the house. Zeppoli’s are a family weakness. Scootering around town is also a favorite Kauffmann activity. Somehow we always end up at Rita’s. Favorite local restaurant? Other than Rita’s - We are big fans of La Isla. (Uptown or Downtown locations!) What do you find most unique about living in this community? The people. Maybe because Hoboken is only a mile square, it makes everyone feel like a neighbor. You can’t put a value on walking down Washington Street and seeing 5 people you know.

O

ur family has been living in Hoboken for over ten years. Both natives of New Jersey, my husband, Greg, and I came to the Square Mile City following college. We have seen the town grow with us—from the 20something year old partying crowd to the not-so-young, but still lots of fun family crowd. We couldn’t imagine living anywhere else as we raise our almost-two-year-old daughter, Brielle. While living in Hoboken, I obtained my law degree at Seton Hall University School of Law, and my husband obtained his Master’s Degree at Stevens Institute of Technology. We met at a party in Hoboken. Our first date was at O’Neils. We got engaged at the W Hotel. Hoboken is the first (and only) place our daughter knows as home. Our little city has seen us through some of our greatest ups and downs, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. I am a family law attorney, specializing in prenuptial agreements, divorce,

custody, child support, and family related issues. My husband is a mechanical engineer, building high rise residential buildings in New York City. We love nothing more than coming home to Hoboken, where we can walk out our door and everything is at our fingertips. We can take a long walk along the water, stop for coffee or wine or ice cream along the way, and all the while see so many familiar faces as we go. Our favorite restaurants include Grand Vin (for an “adult” dinner), Hudson Tavern (for a kid-friendly dinner), Grimaldis for a great pizza, and GFG Bakery for a strong coffee (and/or gelato!). For us, Hoboken is the best combination of a small city with a small town feel. We love our friends that have become family, and we look forward to continuing to meet so many more great neighbors!

arah and husband Jeff and have been together 12 years. They started their life together in Manhattan. Jeff was working on Wall St. and she was teaching in Park Slope. They never really wanted to leave the city, until they discovered Hoboken. Jeff still works in finance and now she teaches in TriBeCa. It’s unexpected, but they both have easier commutes to their city jobs since moving across the Hudson River! They love living here with their five year old son, Caleb. He has spent at least the last three years dressing up as a super hero on a daily basis. You may have seen him in his Spider-Man costume walking their dog Gizmo, at the playground, a restaurant, the grocery store, or just around town. Being a parent is about picking battles and what clothes he wears is not one they choose to engage in! Caleb especially loves how so many people “think” he is the real Spider-Man and give him high fives or ask to shake his hand. They appreciate living in such a warm community that embraces their child. In fact, they can’t imagine having lived anywhere else during the past six years that they have called Hoboken home. They have met friends here that they truly consider family. While the people of Hoboken are their favorite part, they also love the community. It’s full of great parks, shops, and places that they cant get enough of. Not to forgotten are all the amazing restaurants! It’s hard to pick favorites, but you will often find them at Northern Soul, Trattoria Saporia, and Havana Cafe. Caleb just started kindergarten at Wallace Elementary. They are beyond excited to get to be a part of another aspect of the city, the public schools! Hoboken schools have many wonderful things going on and they are thrilled for him to be a student at Wallace. When he comes home from school he can’t wait to share about his day. He adores his teacher, Ms. Brooks, and classmates. He felt especially lucky to be in class with a friend he has known since just a few weeks old. It’s another reason that Hoboken is a special place to live and go school.

Sarah has been a New York City public school teacher in elementary schools for the past 14 years. She feels lucky to have a career that she loves. She finds it continues to be a magical journey to be a part of kid’s learning and growing. She believes in public education and the dedicated teachers, parents, family and community members who contribute to making it successful. It really does take a village, and she is fortunate to work and live in places where everyone knows that and pitches in! // for advertising information email: ladysavanthoboken@gmail.com

M

y name is Anna Langella- Stanin and I am the owner of Sudsy Buggy, Baby Gear Detailing Salon. I have been a resident of Hoboken since 2001. Hoboken is where I met my husband Christopher in 1998 and he now works for Fidelity Investments in Jersey City as a Vice President in the Institutional Clearing division. We have two beautiful girls, Gabriella age 7 and Victoria age 5. How did our family business begin? Our nanny was late again, therefore I was late for work. After a lecture by my boss, I knew I needed to do something. I walked around Rockefeller Center for almost two hours crying, I went back to work and handed in my resignation. I walked from 50th and 6th to Washington Square Park and after feeding the birds for an hour, I got up the nerve to call my husband. He was thrilled!! As I thought about what to do with my future, I remembered the past summer at the shore when my older daughter would sometimes get carsick. I thought back to one specific night in Hoboken when I was cleaning her car seat and the time a friend asked if they could borrow my garage to clean their car seat. An Idea Was Born! Provide a service for individuals that do not have the ability or the time to properly clean their baby gear. It’s been an amazing journey since that day. We started off small and we typically get repeat customers. As those customers told their friends, who told their friends, the business grew. I opened a storefront at 91 Park in May 2017. I’m so very grateful I can be home for the kids and do something I love. Why do we stay in Hoboken? We love the diversity and city life. I always say, “You know you are home when you cannot walk one block without chatting with your neighbors, acquaintances and friends.” My daughters both attend Elysian Charter School. They play recreational soccer and softball and my husband coaches. Hoboken offers so many great programs for kids and the community continues to make this a place where families will love to stay. Our favorite things to do? Whether it’s to grab a snack, window shop in a boutique, stop in a park, play games at Aether or visit the library, there is a lot to do in Hoboken. Hoboken is a great city and everyday is a new adventure. Our favorite restaurants with kids are Leo’s, and Precious. When Christopher and I get a night off, Brass Rail is our go to! for advertising information email: ladysavanthoboken@gmail.com //

eet Amy Frank Goldman, CRPC®, a Financial Planner at Jersey Citybased Caliber Financial Partners. Her husband, Morgan, is a Global Accounts Manager for global manufacturer Haworth. Their threeyear-old daughter Stella is currently enrolled in Brandt’s Pre-K 3 Program and is becoming an expert in general tomfoolery. How long have you called Hoboken home? Hoboken has a long history in our family dating back to 2004, when I lived here as a single girl. Fast forward a couple of years, stints in NYC, Boston and Dallas, a husband, two pugs and now a beautiful little girl, and this is the Goldman family today. My husband Morgan and I live with our three year old daughter Stella and our 10 year old pug Sophie uptown at Maxwell Place in the Hudson. Why did your family decide to move to Hoboken? Like a lot of couples we moved to Hoboken to be close to work and NYC until we got pregnant. We fell in love with Hoboken and have never left. I known for having the most bars per square mile. Today the “6th borough” is a family-driven and tight-knit community combining the urban experience of city living with the traditional suburban feel of knowing your neighbors. As a volunteer for the Brandt Parent Consortium and class mom, I am thrilled with Stella’s programming and exposure. Beyond the parks, the “little people culture” and the best “mutz” on the planet, we identify with many young professional families who have a similar appreciation for an urban family lifestyle. What is your favorite part of living uptown or in Hoboken in general? Taking a scoot with Stella or a walk with our pug Sophie on the waterfront never gets old. That million dollar view brings a surprising sense of calm over me every time. Hoboken is unique in that we still have so many local

independently-owned businesses. It offers a more intimate experience and personal relationships that are rarely found with national chains. I do my best to support local businesses because I truly believe that is part of what makes living here so special. What does a typical Saturday look like for the Goldmans? Most Saturdays you will find Morgan at CrossFit and myself at Pilates, a walk to the farmers market and then perhaps a stop at Schackenbergs to share a donut on the way home. Afternoons are often spent at one of the neighborhood parks or at Pier 13. Saturday nights could be a date night in the city or one of many spent with Stella’s friends and their parents. Where are you when you’re not in Hoboken? We plan a trip every winter out west for my husband who is an avid snowboarder. This year we are visiting Lake Tahoe, last year it was Vail, CO. We also take a warm weather vacation each year. This year we visited Aruba, fortunately not during hurricane season. In between we do a lot of local travel, DC, Boston, Philly and at least one trip a year to Miami to visit with family. Do you consider Hoboken a town or a city? It is technically the city of Hoboken… It may have a city feel; its walkable, lots of high rises, public transportation… but we can’t go to brunch on a Sunday morning without running in to someone we know. The people that live here truly care about their community. I organize quarterly collections here at Maxwell with our local food pantry, In Jesus Name. Every collection is larger than the previous one. The same applies for the work I have done with CASA of Hudson County and the local donations I have helped coordinate for Round Two resources. All three organizations are run here in Hoboken by local residents.

Meet the Riolo Family! When Lori moved to Hoboken in 2001, she never thought that 16 years later she’d be happily married to her best friend of 12 years - with a little girl named Lucy Flynn (3.5) and a shaggy haired little boy named Tyler Beck (almost 2)! They’ve been living, working, and “playing” in this town for so long that they couldn’t imagine life any other way. While they’re long time friends are one by one making their move to the burbs, they carry on loving their little life in our favorite little city. Lori works from home as a Graphic Designer, raising their two kiddos, and her husband, Brian Riolo, is a realtor for Riolo Residential Group at Weichert Realtors in Hoboken (www. rioloresidentialgroup.com). With their oldest just starting school (PreK-3) last week, they’ve found it’s been fun to explore the new routine of one kid left at home, along with new and exciting work opportunities. Lori’s design work, along with her Etsy Shop (www.tentwelvedesigns.com), and new party game adventure series (www.partygamedelivery.com) will surely keep her on her toes, and she couldn’t be happier!

1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour 3/4 rolled oats 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg ½ teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS:

1) Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease 2 12-cup muffin tins. 2) Stir together the whole-wheat flour, oats baking powder, baking soda, spices and salt. 3) In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, oil, buttermilk and vanilla. Using a whisk or a spatula,

2 eggs 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup olive oil oil 1 ⅓ cups buttermilk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups grated carrots 1 grated apple stir in the dry ingredients and mix until well combined. Do not over mix. Fold in the carrots and shredded apples. 4) Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup, spoon batter into muffin cups. Place in the oven, and bake 22-25 minutes until set and golden brown.
