HISTORY OF BURTON

wo miles northwest of the current town lies Burton’s roots. In the 1830’s, Kerr’s Settlement and later Union Hill were thriving communities on the La Bahia Road. With the sale of 330 acres from John & Elizabeth Burton to trustees of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, Burton was born in 1870. Thanks to the railroad, the town flourished while Union Hill disappeared. Through the years Burton became a bustling town with several cotton gins, general stores, saloons, churches, a hotel and a hospital. The railroad was the heartbeat of the town for 90 years until passenger and then freight travel disappeared. While two of the gins closed, one survives to this day. The Burton Farmers Gin is home to a 1925 Bessemer Type IV diesel oil engine. The restored 16 ton “Lady B” is the largest internal combustion engine of its vintage still operating in America! Each year the gin gets fired up and bales cotton during the annual Cotton Gin Festival. One of Burton’s most well-known inhabitants was Leander H . McNelly. Born March 12, 1844 in Follensbee, Brook County, Virginia. A Texas Ranger in the 1870s, McNelly commanded a special group to bring order to the Nueces Strip. McNelly and his rangers were responsible for saving the King Ranch, one of the largest ranches in the world. After suffering from tuberculosis, McNelly retired in 1876. He died on September 4 of the following year in

Burton, Texas. He is buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery where his stately monument was a gift from the King Ranch. Recognizing the importance of the area’s rich history, the Burton Heritage Society organized in March 1973. The group’s mission is to preserve and share the history of the community. Through their dedicated work, the society secured numerous listings in the National Register Leander H. McNelly and “Commercial Historic District” designation for the downtown. The organization is still going strong and actively maintains and protects the Burton Railroad Depot and the Mt. Zion Historical Chapel. burtonheritagesociety.org 979-803-0393

BURTON RAILROAD DEPOT

BURTON ATTRACTIONS

BURTON RAILROAD DEPOT & MUSEUM - In olden days, the importance of a depot, especially to a small town, cannot be overstated. It was the town's link to the rest of the world, communications headquarters (telegraph office), as well as a gathering place for the community. Countless travelers, bales of cotton and other agricultural products, cattle and lumber, as well as numerous tons of miscellaneous merchandise passed through this building during the many decades of its use as a depot. In May 1990, after being used for several different purposes, the Burton depot was moved back to its original location and restored, just before it turned 100 years old. 507 N Railroad St. | 979-803-0393 | burtonheritagesociety.org MT. ZION HISTORICAL CHAPEL -This lovely building has roots back to 1853, although it only dates to 1917. How, you ask? Unfortunately no images survive of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The church remained at this site until the 1880s when it was taken apart and rebuilt in the nearby town of Burton. Now renamed the First Baptist Church of Burton it suffered great damage in the 1900 Storm. In 1917, the church rebuilt yet again due to those damages. Local builders C.W. Homeyer and Will Weeren completed the building and it served the congregation and local community for over 60 years. MT. ZION CEMETERY - This 5-acre cemetery is located on the league of land granted to Robert Clokey, of Stephen F. Austin's Second Colony, in 1831. First grave here was that of an infant, E. A. Metcalfe, who died Sept. 15, 1852. Some unmarked graves may date from a yellow fever epidemic that struck this area in 1867. The cemetery was probably named for the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, located here from 1857 to 1882. Deeded to cemetery trustees in 1881 by owner J. R. Hines, the site contains 13 marked graves, which represent 55 families. Rediscovering the comforts of home

A

Burton’s Blue Willow Café offers from scratch options with a French flair.

new hotspot in an historic location, Blue Willow Café is housed in the freshly renovated building that was once the iconic Burton Café. Opening their doors in February of 2019, the new diner quickly established a solid foothold of their own in downtown Burton with Chef Tammie Mills at the helm. “I’ve always been connected to food,” shared Tammie. “I come from a big family with seven kids. We always have large gatherings and there’s always good food. So, for me, food was always home and comfort – the love language for us. I’ve always cooked and had an inclination towards that. When I moved to Texas, I quit my job to be home for my kids, but they didn’t really need me, and I grew bored. Took me twenty years, but I finally made it to culinary school.” And it’s that passion for family and food that shines through brightly in every plate that comes out of the kitchen at Blue Willow Café.

“Burton restaurants do try and support one another,” said Tammie. “Andre from Brazos Belle still comes by every week when he gets his mail to check on me and make sure I'm holding up and answers questions if I need it. Carl from Neon Moon and I have a barter system; I feed him, and he keeps me caffeinated. And Lily and Celeste of Los Patrones have been great to have as neighbors. I love seeing more women-owned businesses in town, whose owners are mothers as well, doing what they are passionate about. I think Burton is rising up as a team and as a united front with the new business coming in. We want to see healthy growth while keeping Burton the place that we love. We really are lucky in a town so small to have some great options with owners who are dedicated to quality.” Blue Willow Café is located at 12513 West Washington Street and online on Facebook and Instagram.

“Everything starts from scratch,” said Tammie. “It’s a lot of hard work but I think I was raised that hard work is what you do; it’s what our purpose is. I love getting up when it is quiet, and I make the bread fresh every day. I get up at 4 a.m. and I have three hours to myself to bake, set the menu, and get ready for the day ahead.” In addition to a varied menu that features locally grown ingredients whenever possible, Tammie also has expanded her business to include service for larger gatherings both in and out of the café. “We do a lot of special dinners targeted for our clients and catering for small parties,” added Tammie. “We’ve done private dinners, bridal showers, wedding receptions for small groups, and we’ve even done a couple of weddings, preferring to stay with groups of less than fifty guests. We also have plans to do more at the café itself. In April, we will start our Fifth Friday hot dog social. It’ll be kind of a low-key neighborhood social on our patio area; a way to connect people right here in Burton. I hope it will give a consistent opportunity for everyone and anyone to hang out and bond every month that has a fifth Friday in it.” Recognizing that she could not stand alone, Tammie has found a kinship with other restaurant owners in Burton that has proved instrumental to Blue Willow Café’s success.

Anything but ordinary

Burton's Los Patrones balances tradition with modern cusine.

S

ay “Mexican food or Tex-Mex” to many Texans, and burritos bursting with rice and beans or enchiladas drowned in melted cheese probably come to mind. But the dishes rolling out of the kitchen at Los Patrones in Burton are taking a beloved cuisine beyond what patrons have come to expect from a typical Mexican restaurant. Not only are they challenging the idea that Mexican food means cheap and fast, but they’re procuring quality ingredients and preparing them in novel and creative ways. “The Patrones shrimp is my go-to dish,” said John, a frequent guest of the restaurant. “It has mushrooms, green onions and sun-dried tomatoes in a cream sauce. No matter what my family and I order, the portions are always generous and the service is outstanding.” A local favorite hotspot, Los Patrones is drawing crowds from far and wide in search of their selection of steaks, seafood, fajitas, enchiladas and tacos. A family owned and operated restaurant, they put attention into every detail of the dishes that leave their kitchen. It’s been said that you can judge a good Mexican restaurant on three items; their tortillas, guacamole and Margaritas. Rest assured that Lost Patrones hits the mark in every category. “I can’t get enough of their homemade tortillas, queso con chorizo and Mexican guacamole,” shared Tammie, another guest at Los Patrones. “And their salad options are always a great choice when I’m looking for a healthier option.” In addition to the food, Los Patrones also offers patrons selections from their full-bar. Although their classic Margaritas are always a hit, guests looking for something out of the ordinary may want to try their strawberry, mango or peach Margaritas, a piña colada or strawberry daiquiri. In addition to domestic beers, Los Patrones also carries imports and has several favorites on draft. And what Mexican restaurant would be complete without sangria? Guests will delight in their unique take on this classic beverage. "Their peach Margaritas are the bomb," added Beverly, a weekly guest at Los Patrones. "My husband enjoys a draft beer with dinner when we stop in on our usual Friday date night. The waitstaff know our orders by heart." Not in the mood for Mexican food? No problem. Los Patrones varied menu also features alternative selections, such as rib-eye steaks, Cajun pasta, seafood soup, Florence pasta, hamburgers, fried fish, grilled quail, ribs and pork chops. Los Patrones is located at 12607 West Washington Street and online on Facebook.

Simple, French food – Texas-style

H

Burton’s Brazos Belle Restaurant serves up traditional recipes with a twist.

aving grown up spending summer vacations in the area, Sandy Delacroix could have only dreamed that she would one day introduce her husband, Andre, to Burton and relocate their family there to run a local favorite restaurant. “I had spent many summers with my grandparents in Brenham,” shared Sandy. “In 1964, my parents bought a farm just outside of Burton. Our family spent our weekends there and most times that included lunch at the Brazos Belle. Over the years, the restaurant closed and fell into disrepair. Fast forward to 1989 when we were looking for a country place of our very own, the realtor told my husband, ‘You’re a chef, you should consider the Brazos Belle – let’s at least look at it.’ We bought it that day.” Andre’s formal training into the ranks of chef du cuisine began at the very young age of fourteen. Apprenticeship took him through several regional restaurants. It

was then on to the Georges V in Paris, before beginning a six-year tour as chef with the French Club Mediterranee. As that tour came to a close, Andre found himself in Texas to begin a ten-year stint with the Four Seasons Hotel. Today, Chef Delacroix showcases his very personal style of food preparation and service exclusively at the Brazos Belle.

he thinks about retirement, but he just wants to keep doing it; he just signed himself up for another year.” Brazos Belle Restaurant is located at 600 North Main in downtown Burton and online at brazosbellerestaurant. com.

“People may assume that all French food is rich, but it really isn’t,” added Sandy. “It is good food, like his mom would have made. His food is simple, very simple, French food but in a Texas-style. And he always searches out special ingredients.” Although it’s easy to see Andre’s passion for his food, it’s his customers that keep him in the kitchen even past what most would consider retirement age. “Our customers are our friends,” said Sandy. “Andre can usually tell when a certain order goes back to the kitchen precisely who did the ordering; it’s funny! Burton’s White Horse is a local favorite any time of day.

ight years have passed since Allison Krause Crowson combined her lifelong love of music with a newly discovered love of cooking to create success both in and out of the kitchen at White Horse Tavern, a local

landmark.

“I was about to retire from the school district in Brenham,” said Crowson. “I’m also a musician; been playing for over 30 years. The owner of the White Horse approached me about trying to run it and so I did. I’ve made so many friends out there. My kids are grown and, having been around so many people working at the school district, it was in my personality to be around people. The White Horse is almost like having a big family and they all come to eat at noontime. It’s fun, a lot of fun. Some of my fondest childhood and even young adult memories are of being at Aunt Ella Mae Krause's home on Tom Green Street in Brenham around lunchtime. She cooked a hot meal ev-

ery day that her entire family came home for, except her husband. Uncle Ervin owned a Texaco station so someone would make his plate, cover it with foil and deliver it to him. Just like Ella Mae, I am flying solo most days on this gig, but I think you will enjoy the vibe, as well as a good home cooked lunch, or ‘dinner’ as she would have called it.” Although known far and wide for those homemade lunches, there’s two sides to this local hangout. When the sun goes down in Burton, White Horse Tavern turns into a local hotspot that’s hard to beat. “There’s usually live music on Friday and Saturday nights, maybe I’m performing, or a band that has messaged me, or I’ll call up an old friend to play. Patrons are encouraged to check our Facebook page for schedules. Thursday nights there’s no live music, but we still have good food and cold drinks. Two years ago, we started doing tribute shows. I’ve done Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton; I like to dress up and sing. I hire really good musicians, a put-together band, and we do a dinner show. Patrons enjoy a nice meal, usually from the performers own cookbook, I throw on a costume and we do a fun show!” Recognizing her community, Crowson is quick to offer her appreciation for her customers. “Burton has been very, very kind to me,” said Crowson. “I really do enjoy being here. The people, friends both old and new, is what White Horse is all about.” White Horse Tavern is located at 400 North Main in downtown Burton and online at burtonwhitehorse.com.

Coffee lovers rejoice

Neon Moon Coffee Roasters offers specialty coffee in downtown Burton. ransforming green coffee beans into the aromatic coffee everyone loves depends on one vital ingredient – a roaster. And in Burton, that roaster’s name is Carl Luning.

“I was looking for a place to open up a roastery and no other town felt right,” said Luning, who started Neon Moon Coffee Roasters in 2020 with his wife, Rosemary. “The building I found in Burton is 99% perfect for a coffee shop. Locals threatened me that if I was going to have a roastery in town, I better serve coffee. They were true to their word; we sell a lot of it.” A self-proclaimed “wine guy,” Luning’s appreciation for the nuances of fine wine led him down the road to specialty coffee.

grade coffee. I’m also excited about the single origin coffee I am selling and we’re still developing new blends as we go. We roast the bean; you drink the coffee.” Neon Moon Coffee Roasters is located at 12510 West Texas Street in Burton and online at neonmooncoffee.com.

coffee.

– Carl Luning

“Back in 2009, I started hearing about specialty coffee,” shared Luning. “I started doing some research and discovered that coffee beans are like grapes, different notes, flavors. The coffee bug hit us and the drive to educate, learn and gain wisdom from other roasters and purveyors of great coffee is what led us to starting Neon Moon Coffee. It’s like we have our own little winery and don’t have to go through the trouble of making our own wine. We make coffee.” Although Luning is surrounded daily by the responsibilities of running a small business, he still finds time to enjoy a cup himself. “My favorite is my blend,” added Luning. “The Guatemala La Morena region beans add the dark chocolate notes, and the other half is the Brazil Salmo, adding peanut butter and raisin notes. I blend them both fifty, fifty. It’s my best seller. With blends, one has to be careful. Some roasters use a cheaper bean and mix it with a good bean. You get good flavors, but it’s not the same. My blends are almost always tier one specialty

Carrying on an old family tradition

Local icon Burton Short Stop serves up local favorites to generations of diners.

aving grown up in Burton Short Stop, today Mike Harmel still carries on a tradition that his family started years ago.

“My parents sold out in ’73,” said Harmel. “When a group of five of us bought it back again ten years ago, there were not many choices to eat in Burton. Everything was closed. Now I bought it out and I have my three kids and fiancé, Molly, to help me.” Known far and wide for their hamburgers, Burton Short Stop has a varied menu that includes homecooked food and classic favorites. Offering lunch specials six days a week, they also operate as a full-service convenience store. “We have homemade lunch specials,” shared Harmel. “We use fresh hamburger meat for our burgers, never frozen. Our onion rings are also kind of a big deal since we hand-batter them. For breakfast, we do pancakes, omelets, bacon and eggs. We use Burton Processing and they make a real good pan sausage and that’s where we get most of our meats from. Those in a hurry can pick up a breakfast taco or kolaches that we bring in from Kountry Boys in Brenham. On Friday nights, we have a ribeye special. I’m cooking and I do a seasoned homestyle French fry with the skin on. Diners can also choose fish on Friday night. In addition to inside dining, there are picnic tables outside and a back porch. We also sell a lot of food to go at night. Barbecue is available from time to time on weekends. Sundays we don’t cook, but we still have gas and cold beer.”

Slow and low, and "to-go" Cotton Pickin’ Kitchen offers old-school barbecue, Burton-style.

ne of the oldest running gas stations in the state, Cotton Pickin’ Kitchen started as a collaborate endeavor of Greg Malloy, his wife, Trina, and his parents, Claire and Ted. Although they have long been known as a place to get fuel, a cold drink and even auto repairs, they’ve only recently offered grab-andgo barbecue. “We kept selecting different names as we were building and developing,” said Malloy. “One day my wife asked me ‘What are we going to call that cotton pickin’ thing?’ and,

well, there was the name. Plus, cotton is our heritage in Burton. As part of Malloy’s, the restaurant focuses primarily on barbecue. People can come for a little bit of everything; get coffee in the morning, come back for an inspection and oil change, and grab a brisket sandwich for lunch” Staying true to his roots, Malloy is proud to smoke his barbecue the old fashioned way. “I’m old school,” shared Malloy. “I use an old-style pit with indirect cooking and native wood, primarily oak and pecan. We are slow and low. We get it right out and put our sandwiches together just like we were going to eat it ourselves, country-style. And we always run out of barbecue; we make it and it’s gone and we make it again.” Positioned on what used to be a quiet connection between Brenham and Austin, today Malloy takes advantage of the increased traffic to drive his unique brand. “We’re renormalizing eating in a gas station again,” added Malloy. “We are more of a country store and we are developing our niche as a restaurant. We focus on quality, not quantity.” Cotton Pickin’ Kitchen is a part of Malloy’s at 13200 US-290 and online on Facebook.

BURTON COTTON GIN FESTIVAL by Steph Jarvis, Museum Director, Texas Cotton Gin Museum and Tynan Shadle, Programs Coordinator

M

uch more than just a fun, local event, the Burton Cotton Gin Festival’s 32 year history is tightly intertwined with the survival of the Burton Farmers Gin itself. Prior to a museum, the gin sat vacant from its closure in 1974 until 1986. At that time, a group of dedicated volunteers formed a non-profit called Operation Restoration, Inc. with the specific goal of saving the gin from demolition. Once that purpose was achieved, the group, inspired by a challenge set by the Smithsonian Institute, began the process to restore the 1914 gin to working condition. As anyone involved with historic buildings knows, it requires significant funding to undertake a restoration project. So in April 1990 after long planning by ORI, the first Burton Cotton Gin Festival was held right next to the historic cotton gin. To this day, the festival continues. Through the years it has evolved in many ways-- and countless volunteers, and attendees have taken part in this wonderful celebration. Thanks to the festival and much needed funds it provided, a museum was opened in 1999. As of 2021, the museum proudly celebrates 22 years of preserving and sharing history with the public. Much like other small town festivals, a Main Street parade kicks things off and a variety of activities entertain and engage attendees throughout the day. Food, folklife demonstrations, kids activities, craft vendors, contests, live music, an-

tique farming and engine displays, and vintage cars are all wonderful parts of the day. Yet what lies at the heart of the festival--is the real reason the event started, the Burton Farmers Gin. As the real “star” of the day, the gin and its power source, the 1925 Bessemer engine, are fired up to show their stuff and gin several bales of cotton. Visitors can tour the gin for several hours prior to ginning and visit with people running the engine, gin stands or the press boxes. This walk through the building and conversation with volunteers offers a truly special glimpse into history. The Burton Cotton Gin Festival started 32 years ago with the goal of fundraising to preserve a Texas Historical gem. While it continues that original purpose, the Festival is most of all a day for people to gather, have fun, learn, and continue the history and tradition of the Burton Farmers Gin. We hope that you will join us sometime, and see for yourself what the Burton Cotton Gin Festival is all about!

More than a thrift store The Corner Shoppe stands as small miracle in downtown Burton.

S

by Susie Tommaney, Executive Director, Bridge Ministry of Burton

omething very special happens at The Corner Shoppe in Burton. Like all good thrift stores, it’s a place where neighbors can “pay it forward” by cleaning out closets, downsizing their living spaces, or managing a loved one’s estate. Savvy shoppers can always find vintage treasures, unusual antiques or rare collectibles at hard-to-beat prices.

pantry, hot meals for homebound seniors, summer camp for children, job training, and so much more. So when you get to the flashing four way stops, go ahead and pull in at 601 North Main. The Corner Shoppe is open Thursdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or visit facebook.com/burtonbridgeministry.

But the miracle of it all — in this tiny little town that big box retailers won’t touch — is that there’s a boutique store that fulfills most of the shopping needs for this community. Clothing and shoes? Check. Housewares, home décor, linens and bed coverings? Got it. Big stuff like furniture, televisions, appliances and musical instruments? That’s just a hop, skip and a jump away and discoverable via Facebook’s Marketplace. Best of all? Operated by Burton Bridge Ministry’s dedicated volunteers and staff, proceeds from The Corner Shoppe help support area programs like a mobile food BURTON, TEXAS |

MEET THE

NEIGHBORS CARMINE - The Carmine Chamber of Commerce creates an exciting and funfilled evening with a decorated Casino Night at Carmine Hall with local dealers for Black Jack, Craps, Money Wheel, Texas Hold’Em, and more. ROUND TOP - Only 10 miles away, Round Top is worth the short drive the next time you stay in Carmine.. It might be the twice-a-year antiques show that originally put the small town of Round Top on the map, but there’s plenty more to do all year long. They’ve got a little something for everyone - fine dining, fantastic art, unique shops and great places to explore. Chartered in 1870, and with a population of a whopping 90 people, Round Top is full of small-town Texas charm.

CARMINE ROUND TOP

BRENHAM - What do alpacas, a cotton gin, live music, wineries, award winning barbecue, comfy beds and long strolls on historic streets have in common? They are just a few things you will discover when you take the 11-mile drive east down Highway 290 from Burton. Prepare yourself for inspiration around every corner— look for the giant, modern murals that adorn Brenham’s historic buildings. BRENHAM

LAKE SOMERVILLE - Four units make up Lake Somerville State Park. Birch Creek Unit is on the north side of the lake, while Nails Creek Unit is on the southwest side. The 13-mile Lake Somerville Trailway connects the two units. Birch Creek and Nails Creek offer access to the lake for fishing, boating, paddling and swimming. On land at either unit, you can camp, picnic, hike, ride mountain bikes, geocache, and go birding. Visitors can also explore miles of multiuse trails. Anglers here reel in hybrid, largemouth and white bass; crappie; and catfish. You don’t need a fishing license to fish from shore or jetty in a state park, but you will need one to fish from a boat. Birch Creek has a fishing jetty.
