A LETTER from the BOARD It’s that time of year again, y’all! As spring saunters toward summer and the bluebonnets wither in the growing heat, San Antonio prepares for its annual tradition of revelry and celebration.

We're talking, of course, about San Antonio Beer Week.

San Antonio’s extended family of brewers, publicans, restaurateurs, and aficionados encompasses our neighbors in Boerne, New Braunfels, Seguin, and Adkins—a community of people dedicated to revitalizing what was once a major hub of beer production in the country. What we’ve lost in mass quantities since Prohibition has returned with an abundance of depth, character, and flavor. From breweries producing beer in small, one-barrel batches to manufacturers brewing 5,000+ bbls a year, and from traditional lagers to innovative styles—San Antonio’s beer scene is thriving and growing.

And like everything else, no one does Beer Week like San Antonio does. The spirit of camaraderie and friendship that permeates our local industry shines as brewers across the area come together to promote the appreciation and enjoyment of craft beer. It’s this spirit that produced this year’s SABW collaboration beer: a Belgian-style witbier using Texas malt and wheat along with locally foraged ingredients including orange peel, honeysuckle, and bottle brush. Look for it at your favorite beer bar during San Antonio Beer Week!

The fun begins on Saturday, May 13, with our Kick-Off Party at Main Plaza—a free event featuring brews from all your favorite local breweries, food trucks, live music, and the celebrated Saga light show on the San Fernando Cathedral. SABW ends with the Closing Ceremonies on Sunday, May 21, at Beethoven Maennerchor, the venerable King William institution. With a focus on food and beer pairings in a more intimate setting, you’ll want to get your tickets soon!

SABW Collabeeration Article & Photos by: JoMando Cruz One of the challenges to selecting the collaboration beer for San Antonio Beer Week is satisfying the diverse palates of San Antonio’s beer-drinking public. Impossible, to be sure, but there is a historical significance attached to this year’s selection—a witbier.

Despite coming from an Austin brewery, Celis White left an indelible print on all of Texas and even the nation of craft brewers. There are current variations of it across Texas, including two year-round offerings and a seasonal mainstay in San Antonio alone. » 2017

Homage as intent, the collective of San Antonio brewers aimed at a palatable brew with a bit of a kick (about 6.9% ABV). Texas-grown raw wheat and Texas Pils malt from Texas barley all kept the beer strictly Texan. But it being San Antonio Beer Week, a team of local brewers foraged local plants like honeysuckle and lemongrass while the final addition came from a partnership with the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, who contributed bottlebrush, Texas sage, and Bay laurel. »

While local brewers have traditionally collaborated to select and brew the official beer for San Antonio Beer Week, this year marked the first time that the brew day was open to the public. Hosted by and brewed at the Freetail Brewing Co. production facility in Southtown, the day-long event featured music, food, prizes, and a fascinating look at how beer is brewed, especially for those who have never visited a brewery or experimented with homebrewing.

It also served as a great way to meet with and learn from many of the local brewers that make up San Antonio’s beer scene. Thank you to everybody who came out!
