Dear Young Marines, As we celebrate the continued success of the Young Marines program, we must learn from past challenges, continue to navigate through current challenges, and focus on our ever-positive future.

Change and challenges are inevitable, but how we have adapted, strengthened, and overcome reflects positively on our individual character and the foundational strength of our program.

The Young Marines started with a small group of units in the northeast. By the mid 1990s, there were 40 units spread in various locations across the country. It was not easy to grow from a small collection of units to a cohesive national program, but we did it!

Our oldest active unit is Grand Rapids Michigan, which was chartered on 1 August 1967. Our original unit in Brass City (CT) closed for a decade but was re-activated for our 50th Anniversary and is still going strong. Just last month, we celebrated our newest unit, Ash Fork Young Marines in Dewy, Arizona. We can confidently and proudly say that the Young Marines Program has The Young Marines started with a small group of units in the northeast. Young Marines National Headquarters continues to receive calls

and emails requesting information on forming new units. Why? Because even amid a global pandemic, Americas citizens recognize the importance of leadership, self-discipline, teamwork, and a commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle for our youth. Never doubt that your commitment as a Young Marine matters to yourself, our volunteers, your community, and our country.

This Esprit is full of great stories about recent and past activities across all aspects of our program.

From the Advanced Leadership School, Cyber Camp, and Senior Seminar, to our regional leadership schools and our Adult Volunteer training, we remain relevant while adhering to all safety guidelines.

The alumni stories reflect great work by those who have proudly worn the Young Marines emblem. I hope that you will be inspired by these examples and safely create your own adventures locally.

We are also introducing the new Chester’s Fitness Club. Our healthy, drug-free lifestyle is about fitness of mind and body, that starts with staying drug free, eating healthy, and consistent physical activity that is appropriate to each Young Marine.

Lastly, registration for SPACES and National Leadership Academy Staff will be December 1, 2020 and youth/ student registration will begin January 4, 2021 so get ready to seize your future!

• National Young Marine of the Year “We Rise By Lifting Others.”

-Robert Ingersoll Hello Young Marines! To say this summer in the Young Marines has been unique would be an understatement.

One thing the National Young Marine of the Year can count on is travel, and as the reality of COVID and cancelations began to sink in, I decided to not focus on the disappointment of what events were not happening, but to be mindful of being even more thankful for each event that was happening.

After earning the title of National Young Marine of the Year, many units reached out to me to invite me to their virtual drills. It was so much fun to see the way different units had embraced meeting virtually with creative games, classes, and time for questions that I could tell each Young Marine had thoughtfully come up with a question for me. I was welcomed into these virtual meetings with so much joy and sense of camaraderie. It was a great way to connect with units across the county.

Toward the end of June, I was able to get out to both a Junior and Senior Leadership School in New Orleans with the JPSO Young Marines. I was reminded that, no matter where we come from as Young Marines, we are a family, and it was amazing to be part of not only the motivated Young Marines becoming leaders but to be immersed in the culture of New Orleans.

After Senior Leadership School (SLS), I headed up to Headquarters Young Marines for Advanced Leadership School (ALS). The experience of true teamwork from all involved was outstanding.

While it was an ALS like never before, with everyone working to keep each other safe; the same hard work, dedication, and motivation was seen in all the advanced leaders. These leaders left ready to head back to their units with new knowledge, confidence, and great memories.

By the end of the summer, I was able to be with Division 2’s Junior Leadership School (JLS) in Maryland. I was humbled by a Young Marine with dyslexia, who I saw as a younger version of me, pushing himself to graduate entrusting me to help him through classes. It never gets old to me to be with Young Marines as they advance their leadership styles. I enjoyed meeting and really getting to know so many Young Marines at these schools.

I was also able to attend the Glock shooting event in Colorado and visit some local units again giving me an opportunity to meet more of you. Our program is amazing because of each of you Young Marines!

Embrace and appreciate each event and activity that is happening, brush off the ones that are canceled and know they will one day return!

Overall, this summer was very different for us all, but the support and camaraderie that I felt at each event cemented my belief that we will get through this together. That together we will weather this storm and come out stronger than before! We are approaching my favorite season of the Young Marines, Prevention Month!

I look forward to seeing all your efforts during Red Ribbon Week, the DDR Dash, and the Young Marine Birthday! Please reach out if there is anything I can do for you! I am here for each of you!

Fitness is More Than Just PT, It Is a Journey I have been an active person all my life. Growing up in Colorado and central California, I spent much of my childhood outside. I played sports, rode bikes and skateboards, surfed and snowboarded. Upon graduating high school, I went into construction working for a general contractor and performing parts of every occupation in that industry. Eventually, I made the decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.

I spent 16 years serving the country I love. As you would expect, Marines PT… all the time! It was while I was serving in the Marine Corps when I discovered and fell in love with CrossFit. I was never one to enjoy “going to the gym” or formation runs. What I found was that I loved the simplicity of the movements and complexity of the workouts in CrossFit. I also loved the supporting and inspiring nature of the members within the CrossFit community, which reminded me of our Young Marines community.

Terms like WOD (Workout of the Day), “Fran”(Thrusters and Pull-Ups, 21-15-9 repetitions), and AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) became part of my vernacular and I started to see dramatic improvements in my fitness, as well as my level of enjoyment when it came to exercising. I decided to bring some of those ideas and concepts with me to Young Marines. At the time, I was volunteering with the Camp Pendleton (CA) Young Marines (Congratulations on celebrating your 35th anniversary this year!) and the Young Marines really liked it!

We made the decision to add PT to every meeting. We started every meeting with an hour of PT. It would consist of a warmup, a workout, and a cool down. Over time, we started to see improvement in the Young Marines’ PFT scores. Simply put, we (the Young Marines and Adult Volunteers) were having fun working out!

As life has moved on, my family and I have moved on from southern California and now hang our hats in Virginia. I have been blessed to work as your Director of Operations at Headquarters Young Marines and have brought CrossFit with me on that journey. I have become a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer (CF-L1), a CrossFit Kids Trainer, and started the Chester’s Fitness Club. Next, we incorporated WODs into the curriculum at the National Leadership Academy and Adult Volunteer training opportunities like LAVA and the UMCs. These steps were necessary to emphasize the focus of living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Through adversity comes growth and strength.

Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we as a program needed to adjust everything! Meeting in person has not been an option for some of us for many months now. Because of this, I started an Instagram account @chestersfitnessclub where we post workouts once a week. This provided Young Marines, Adult Volunteers, and parents workout options that they could do at home and stay in shape while not being able to meet with their unit.

Young Marines, Adult Volunteers, and parents, as we move through the remainder of 2020 let us focus on the positive, why we do what we do, and how important each and every day is. My challenge to you is this: Set attainable goals to accomplish and make a plan to accomplish them. Workout once daily, even if that is just a short jog or walk. Follow the Chester’s Fitness Club Instagram and try a few workouts.

Lastly, live each day to the fullest, challenging yourself along the way, and always give 100% in all that you do.

More Than Drill, It’s About Developing Friendships

To me, Young Marines is about more than coming to drill and getting signoffs.

It is about feeling like you are part of a family. Not just your unit, but the entire family of Young Marines.

Since attending Junior Leadership School (JLS) last year and meeting our former and current Division 2 YMOY, I have had amazing opportunities to interact with Young Marines from all over the country. I was lucky enough to participate in the Navajo Code Talkers event last year, and one of the neatest things to me was that I was once again reunited with Young Marines from across the country that I had met at JLS. I am still on a group

chat with several of them, and we reach out to each other to ask for advice for drill activities, to support each other with meeting our goals, and to hold each other accountable.

Because of these relationships, I have had the opportunity to participate in activities with other Young Marine units, both in Maryland and Virginia. I was able to participate in an event where we met some of the Korean War’s Chosin Few. I was able to participate in Young Marine Color Guard for the Veteran’s Day Parade in New York City, and just recently, I had the honor of participating in a Color Guard with the Quantico (VA) Young Marines and attending a banquet for the Iwo Jima Association 75th Commemoration.

These are events that were put out to others as well, but because I had met other Young Marines who would be participating, I knew that I would see a friendly face so it made it easier for me to raise my hand to say I wanted to take part. In addition to the experience, I wanted to attend so I could see them again.

I want to encourage all other Young Marines to put yourself out there and form friendships with Young Marines who are not in your unit. If you attend a SPACES event, keep in touch with the other Young Marines you meet.

You never know when you might have a chance to see them again, or when you might need to reach out to them for guidance.

Missouri Young Marines’ Food Drive Benefits Local Food Bank

On 11 July, the Pulaski Young Marines conducted a food drive for the community of Waynesville, MO. I wanted to participate, because I like helping other people, especially in these crazy times. It all started when one of our Young Marines, YM/ Pvt Reeves, suggested we participate in this drive.

We all thought it would be a great idea.

One of the things I like about the Young Marines is how we try to help in our community.

Surprisingly, the most I learned from this event was how to be a smart shopper. My Grandfather and I went shopping, and he said I shouldn’t mindlessly take canned foods and throw them in the cart, but instead should search for foods that could be turned into meals for families, like soups, stews, ramen, and even spaghetti.

Once we gathered all the food brought in from

the other Young Marines, we took them down to the local food bank and made the presentation for all of our unit. The workers from the store took time to take the picture and they were very appreciative. It was very satisfying knowing that we had made a small difference.

Going “Old School” To Stay in Contact With Fellow YMs MY

Miramar Utilized the U.S. Postal Service to Connect with Young Marines YM/MGySgt Sophia M. Righthouse, taking her responsibilities as the Southern California Regiment Sergeant Major to heart, realized that during these pandemic regulated times that Young Marines were bombarded with impersonal emails as the majority of their communications. She was also keenly aware that this is re-registration time.

Knowing it is her responsibility to maintain contact with hundreds of Young Marines in the regiment and fearing that many emails may not even be read by most recipients, she began to brainstorm ideas. She wanted to give a personal, meaningful touch to her communications.

Thinking about how she and her fellow Young Marines always enjoy receiving the Esprit magazine, she came upon a simple, slightly laborintensive idea; in her words, “I’m going old school.”

Southern California Regiment YM/SgtMaj Righthouse decided to use the “old fashioned” U.S. Mail.

She set to work crafting a motivational message to print on her personalized Young Marine cards and then broke into a flurry of activity. To make the cards meaningful, she tailored each card with the individual rank and name of every regimental Young Marine and then signed each card. She then got to work addressing and stuffing hundreds of envelopes, envelopes she

printed the Young Marine logo on.

Why did she do this? In order to show all Young Marines under her charge that she cared; that someone in the program thought about them, recognized them, and valued them.

While it may seem like a simple idea, ask yourself, when is the last time you received a personal, tangible note and how did it make you feel, and more importantly, when is the last time you sent one?

In these times of uncertainty and isolation, how do we stay in personal contact with our Young Marines and keep them motivated?

How do we make them feel special and part of something bigger? We need to constantly think outside the box and try new… and old things to keep improving the program. Maybe for the price of a few stamps, there is a lesson here to learn.

Drug Abuse: A Danger to Youth, With Negative Potential

While few people deny the dangers of drug abuse, many teens are curious about drugs. They should stay away from drugs because drug abuse affects our health. Drugs can quickly take over our lives. Friends (and peer pressure) have the greatest influence of using drugs during adolescence.

Drugs are chemicals that change the

way a person's body or mind works.

Drug abuse is not good for health because of the many side effects.

Drugs are consumed in different ways, by inhaling, taking by mouth (or ingesting), injecting, applying on skin (or absorbing), and smoking.

When a person becomes addicted to a drug, the drug becomes so important that the person cannot manage without it. Drug use affects the ability

to focus, leading to academic failure and poor social skills. It can also create problems with our family, school, and with our friends. The person’s reflexes will become slower; they will have trouble working and doing things which require any physical and mental thought.

Those are some of the many reasons that abusing drugs is not good and will only result in negative outcomes.

Once a Young Marine, Today a Volunteer Firefighter and EMT

A Former Young Marine Continues to Make a Difference and Help Others in His Community

Giving back to the community is important, and I had the opportunity to speak with Young Marine Alumni Justin Chobirko, who is currently a firefighter and EMT. Justin was a member of my unit (the Westmoreland County Young Marines) from 2015 through May of 2018, where he achieved the rank of Young Marine Sergeant and was discharged upon his graduation from Hempfield High School.

Justin has been a volunteer firefighter for the past six years. He became interested in firefighting after his family’s home suffered fire damage and he and his family had to live in a hotel for a month while their home was being restored. He later applied to become a junior firefighter.

Justin has gone through and continues to complete all the required training to be a volunteer firefighter and spends numerous hours weekly at his assigned fire station when he is not working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

While in high school Justin also took classes to become an EMT and since has completed the coursework required to be an advanced EMT. He has been an EMT for 3 years and an advanced EMT for 3 months.

Being and EMT is another way Justin feels that he is making a difference in the community and at the same time doing what he loves, helping others. Justin reports the best part of being a firefighter is saving lives, property and just making a difference in people’s lives. He feels pride in giving back to the community, something that he also enjoyed while in the Young Marines program.

Being a part of the Young Marines program helped him learn leadership, teamwork, and discipline skills that he also uses as a volunteer firefighter and EMT. Justin believes that the most challenging part of being a firefighter is the physical, emotional, and mental strength required to do the job well.

He always strives to do his best. Justin says firefighting is not for everybody, but people should educate themselves on fire prevention and slowing down further damage if a fire occurs.

No matter what, he strongly recommends that everyone becomes certified in basic first aid and CPR. You never know if or when you may need those skills. But having that training could possibly help you save your life or the life of someone else.

Justin plans to continue to be a volunteer firefighter for as along as possible as well as further his career in the health care industry.

Young Marine receives Inaugural Alumni Award honoring former Young Marine

On July 26, I had the privilege of attending the Samuel K. Beamon Sr. Memorial Scholarship Committee’s “Day of Remembrance,” recognizing and honoring Mr. Beamon’s extensive community work. This dedication took place on the Samuel K. Beamon Sr. Memorial Bridge in Waterbury, CT. Mr. Beamon was an original member of the Brass City (CT) Young Marines - the very first Young Marines unit, founded in 1959, six years before the Young Marines was chartered as an official detachment of the Marine Corps League.

There were approximately one hundred people attending the event, including members of the Brass City (CT) Young Marines. The Unit's color guard presented the colors. Brass City’s YM/LCpl Damean Pare, an incredibly motivated Young Marine, was honored with the inaugural Samuel K. Beamon Young Marines Alumni Award established

by Mr. Beamon's family to personify Mr. Beamon’s efforts to keep youth involved in their community.

"I am honored to receive this award, and proud to serve with the Brass City Young Marines who all do their part," shared YM/LCpl Pare. “YM/LCpl Pare exemplifies the Young Marines mission ‘strengthening the lives of America’s Youth,’ and our unit is incredibly proud of him,” stated Brass City Unit Commander Bill Spring.

The event concluded with Reginald Beamon, Mr. Beamon’s brother (and also a former member of the Brass City Young Marines) encouraging everyone to support the charity of their choice as part of a “Day of Service” honoring Samuel K. Beamon.

Reginald Beamon shared that his brother “was always giving to people. He was a great giver”.

In Connecticut, MCL Service Award honors a Young Marine’s Retirement On Sunday July 26, 2020, I had the distinct honor of representing the Department of Connecticut Marine Corps League (MCL) as its Young Marine Liaison while attending the retirement ceremony of YM/GySgt Kiera McCord of Three Rivers Young Marines.

In this capacity, I presented her with a MCL Distinguished Service Award authorized by the Marine Corps League National Commandant Marine Dennis Tobin.

The Department of Connecticut Marine Corps League has a tremendous working relationship with our Young Marine units.

A former Young Marine Master Sergeant, CPT Luis E. Jauregui, USA, is a graduate of California State University, Fresno where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Military Police Corps. His military education includes the United States Army Military Police Officer’s Basic and Advanced Courses at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Upon completion of the Military Police Officer’s Basic Course, he was assigned to Fort Stewart, GA where he deployed with the 549th Military Police Company as a Platoon Leader. Following this assignment, he served as the Executive Officer of the 549th Military Police Company. He was then assigned as the Brigade Provost Marshal for 4th Infantry Brigade Combat

Team, 3d Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, GA. He would then attend the Military Police Officer’s Advanced Course where he earned a Master’s Degree from Webster University in Business and Organizational Security Management.

Following the Military Police Officer’s Advanced Course, he was assigned to the 94th Military Police Battalion at Camp Humphreys, Korea where he served as the Battalion S-4. He would later be reassigned to Camp Walker, Korea where he commanded the 188th Military Police Company and 903d Military Police Detachment (MWD) from May 2016 to November 2017.

Upon completion of command, CPT Jauregui was selected to serve as the senior Military Police trainer for the Maneuver Support Trainers team at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, CA. He completed 20 rotations as an observer, coach, trainer (OC/T) at the NTC. CPT Jauregui is currently training to become a Foreign Area Officer specializing in the Middle East, North Africa region and will attend Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC in 2021.

CPT Jauregui’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with oak leaf cluster), Army Commendation Medal (with oak leaf cluster), Army Achievement Medal (with oak leaf cluster), Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (with bronze star), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Air Assault Badge, and German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge (silver).

CPT Jauregui is married to Jacqueline, who has served as the Family Readiness Group Leader for multiple units and most recently served as the Fort Irwin Military and Civilian Spouses’ Club President. She is a recipient of the Military Police Corps Regiment Order of the Vivandieres. She is currently pursuing a certification to become a Board-Certified Music Therapist (BCMT). She is a graduate of Fresno Pacific University, attaining a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education.

Two OPSO Young Marines Planning to Pursue Higher Education Understanding Semper Fidelis is More Than a Motto You cannot build a house without a foundation. The Young Marines Program was my foundation to the house of my success in life.

In the beginning during my recruit days, I didn't quite understand the importance of all the training, teachings, and rules. Jokingly, now that I have made it out of the program alive, I can reflect on all of those things.

One of those things that I did not understand at the time was Semper Fidelis. It is Latin for “Always faithful” ​and is the motto of the United States Marine Corps. Now, I have realized that it applies to many different situations in life, from spiritual to just being optimistic or hopeful. Being faithful brings a sense of calmness because there is trust or confidence in something. Always faithful is more than a motto, it’s a lifestyle.

The thought of a physical fitness test is something that I didn’t look forward to at times because of the rigorous exercising. Now I see that it was very helpful because physical

fitness is important to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

The highest rank I attained was that of Corporal, and trust me, it was well-earned. I was a Private for about two years because I hadn’t broken out of my shell. I love my Commanding Officers because they saw my potential and helped me grow which eventually led to me breaking out of my shell and becoming the leader that I am today. Even though I was only a Corporal, I knew my place and stepped up when I needed to.

One of the biggest lessons I learned about being a leader is that the best leaders lead by example.

I attended St. Augustine High School and I have been a student there since 6th grade and now I’m a graduating senior of the Class of 2020. I was accepted into eight universities and I received a full-tuition scholarship to Case Western Reserve University.

Due to obvious circumstances, I chose to commit to Case Western in the fall. At the moment, I am considering majoring in psychology or sociology. It is also possible that I may go into astronomy. My journey to get where I am instilled core values in me and they are strength, resiliency, and faith. We must remember to acknowledge and appreciate all the pieces of the puzzle of life to fully understand and reach successful heights.

From the Director of Admissions and Recruiting at Grambling State University, it began: Dear Ashley, Congratulations! After a thorough review of your application and supporting information, you have been accepted for admission to Grambling State University as a Freshman student for Fall 2020.

My journey with the Young Marines started when I was eight years old. I remember nervously walking into a room of kids in white crew neck shirts and black shorts, also known as recruits. Me, not knowing then that some of those same recruits would be some of my closest friends today.

My Young Marines unit over the years taught me and shaped me into the young woman I am today. I can proudly call my unit family because like any family, they’ve seen me at my worst and

continue to support me one hundred percent.

My first encampment experience is when I started to come out of my shell and be more of myself. I showed my until that I am not only an exceptional Young Marine but an even better cook.

Since I have been with the Young Marines I have learned and experienced so many things, not only about military skills but giving back to my community. I have done things with my unit that I would have never done if I was not in this program and that is what I love about them. They do not just teach you discipline and teamwork but they also give kids the experience. So many young kids would probably never experience what I have.

The Young Marines build you up and get you prepared to execute those skills and training in real life. The Commanding Officers to me were my parents away from home. If there was anything

I needed I knew I could lean on them.

To the younger Young Marines in my unit and other units across the world, don't give up on the Young Marines.

Utilize the program to your advantage.

Your Commanding Officers are there for you. The program can only go as far as your mind takes you. In the beginning, it may seem hard, but it is all worth it in the end. The Young Marines and my unit have watched my growth over the years and I am so thankful for them and all the people I met on my journey.

I would like to give my deepest thanks to my unit for pushing me and supporting me and not giving up on me. I am so proud to say I am a Young Marine and a graduating senior of the class of 2020. I am furthering my education in the fall at Grambling State University, where I will be majoring in kinesiology.

“You Should Never Be Scared” But Stay Calm, Motivated

Junior Leadership School (JLS) was probably one of the most amazing opportunities I have had in the Young Marines.

Throughout the week, JLS was challenging, motivating, fun, and it pushes you to your limit. Although it was challenging, it was an amazing experience, I learned many new things about being a leader, a better person, and a better Young Marine. The week consisted of tough PT, classes, Drilling, Map and Compass, Fire Watch, and many more great things.

I think one of the best parts of this school was doing the PFT. You do the PFT alongside many other Young Marines that help you through the whole week, stay motivated, and become your

friend. The instructors and Staff members help you get better at the PFT as well.

You should never be scared to go to JLS because it will be 100% harder if you are scared. If you stay calm and stay motivated, it will be easier. Although it can be tough, you should believe in yourself at all times because if you do not and think you won’t succeed it will be a really tough week.

Throughout this school, you can also meet many new Young Marines and make many new friends, that can hopefully always be there for you. Junior Leadership School is an amazing experience that can help you become a better leader, Young Marine, and person, and I highly recommend going to Junior Leadership School.

over the United States. My time there was a blast thanks to that all the funny moments we had together at chow, drill, or even in the cabins. I am happy and ready to lead now, thanks to the Young Marines, Young Marines cadre, and the adult staff.

When I first arrived at the Tennessee Regiment Senior Leadership School, I was not as motivated as a Young Marine SSgt should be, so I learned the hard way, throughout the week I watched and learned the standards of what I should be doing.

I was pushed by the staff because they knew I could be louder. By the end of the week, everything I said was in a command voice, which I am happy I found. Later in the week, I sat down with Young Marine 1stSgt Gould, and he asked me “What is the one thing that motivates you?” I never really thought of it that way, till I thought about my unit and everyone in it and how I was supposed to be leading. After that talk, I really looked at how I was leading and that I needed to improve not just for me but for my unit as well.

ALS During the COVID Pandemic:

The Pandemic Made For A Very Different Experience

Advanced Leadership School was a completely different experience this year.

We weren’t at Camp Rilea getting the traditional two weeks. Instead, we were in Virginia, where it felt like 80 degrees by 0600. The first few days were a little hectic because it was new to everyone. Luckily, we had an amazing YM and Adult staff to work through it all and give us all the information we needed to become the next generation of Advanced Leaders. It was definitely not easy as we had to pack two weeks’ worth of information into one.

A typical day would consist of Reveille at 0530, PT Formation at 0545, PT at 0600, Morning Chow was around 07000730, and by 0830, we were in the classroom ready to learn.

About Those Masks The biggest thing that was hard to adjust to was having to wear a mask all day, everyday. The only time we were able to take it off was if we were doing PT or eating chow. We also had to maintain a six foot distance between other Young Marines.

On Monday, we performed the PFT. I was extremely nervous because I wasn’t sure how I would do. I had struggled last year at Senior Leadership School by failing the initial PFT by 5 points. I took the PFT again and passed. This year, I wanted to take the PFT once.

PFT, It’s Physical and Mental We started off with curl ups and I was already not getting the score I wanted. I was a little upset, until I did the shuttle run. When I performed the shuttle run,

my mentality changed. It went from feeling like I might fail to knowing that there were still three more events to do.

The event I was most nervous about was the mile run. My mile run times are not consistent., ranging from a 9:40 to 10:15 I didn’t have an idea of what time I would achieve. I just started running. I wasn’t thinking about my time or thinking about the PFT. I was just running as fast as I could.

When I passed the finish line and I heard the time “9:26”, I was shocked. Now for some Young Marines, that is nothing. They can run a mile in six minutes. For me, that time represented a huge improvement.

That is the fastest I have run since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

The point I want to make is, when you are out there performing the PFT, don’t compare your scores to others.

Think about how you could improve yourself on the next event. Remember, the PFT consists of five events.

One bad event doesn’t determine your whole PFT score. Once we finished the PFT, the whole school was a lot less stressful. Wednesday and Thursday were the best days out of the whole week.

We had two amazing classes taught by Mrs. Brenda Davis. They were very informative and it gave me a new perspective on how I view other people.

ALS During the COVID Pandemic A Visit To Mount Vernon Friday, we had the opportunity to visit Mount Vernon, the home of first President, George Washington. We were able to see his mansion, where he is buried, and the amazing view behind his mansion of the Potomac River. Friday night, we were able to get our shirts signed and receive everyone’s contact information. It was the first night we were finally able to get to know other Young Marines outside our platoons.

About Those Precautions Due to COVID-19 precautions, we weren’t able to really talk to other Young Marines from other platoons. I was finally able to interact with others and get to know their favorite foods, their favorite color and we were able to talk about how the week was and what they enjoyed the most.

Graduation Day Arrives Saturday was a great day. We got to sleep in an extra 30 minutes, and it was GRADUATION DAY! We were down in the lobby by 0730, and outside for Morning Formation by 0745 for one last ditty.

After Chow, we finished packing, put on our Service C Uniform and headed back down to the lobby for graduation practice.

It wasn’t until now where I started thinking about Top 10. Top 10 consists of the top 10 Young Marines out of the entire ALS class who stood out the most, showed the most growth, and showed us what a leader looks like in their own way.

I didn’t go to ALS because I wanted Top 10. I went to ALS to better myself as a leader. To learn more about creating the next generation of leaders. Hearing my name called was a huge shock to me because I never thought I would get this far in the program.

I was extremely happy to hear not only my name, but all the other Young Marines getting called. I was never focused on getting a top 10 ranking. I just showed up giving my 100%. Never giving up, even on the hardest days. The most important thing to remember when attending any leadership school is, don’t worry about other people, don’t compare yourself to other leaders.

Each Young Marine is a leader in their unique way. Think about why you started, why you are where you are, and how you got there. At the end of the day, it was YOU who put in all that hard work.

Not only will you become knowledgeable on Young Marines items, you will learn life lessons, and make lifelong friends.

This summer as I’m sure is the case with many other Young Marines I was extremely saddened when I found out that National Leadership Academy was canceled.

However, I was lucky and I attended the Tennessee Regiment Senior Leadership School for six days. I flew into Nashville, and then was picked up and transported to the school, just like National Leadership Academy.

While there, I learned things such as decision-making techniques and how to plan an encampment.

I had the pleasure of seeing a few Young Marines that I met last year at NLA as well as meeting some new friends.

Even though I have been home for several weeks, I still talk to these Young Marines every day.

The school also taught valuable lessons about leadership, such as when and how to adapt to a sudden change in plans. You

Senior Leadership School, In Spite of a Few Delays

A few months back, I was given the opportunity to attend National Senior Leadership School with a full scholarship from the Young Marines Alumni Association, but due to the Coronavirus, it had to be cancelled. As disappointing as that was, I was given another chance at attending a leadership school. I received an email from Division Five stating that I was registered for a local SLS in Greenville, Michigan. I had a second chance, and I couldn’t wait! around, and I got bad news. Once again the tables turned, I received another email from Division Five regarding another Senior Leadership School!

This time it was in Spencer, Indiana and it was a Junior Leadership School combined with a Senior Leadership School. Our unit started into action immediately, we started figuring how many Young Marines from our unit would be attending this

academy. It turned out we had six students and two cadre!

The next step was getting there, we ended up taking three vehicles full of gear and Young Marines for a six-hour drive down to Indiana. When we finally arrived, masks were automatically required, we turned in all contraband and were assigned racks in the barracks.

More students started to pile in when a big thunderstorm hit the camp, and we could start to hear tornado sirens in the distance.

When the next morning came along we did the PFT, classes, some team building exercises, and some drill.

Over the next few days, I was able to learn a lot about the other Young Marines. By the time Graduation came around, I became very close with a few other Young Marines, and I will admit it, I cried after our graduation. I will never forget some of the skills that were taught at this school, the cadre taught us more than just skills we will use in this program, they taught us skills that we can use in our everyday lives. I can’t thank everyone who made this school happen enough.

JLS Helped Me Grow During This Challenging Summer

On July 25, 2020, I went to the Tennessee Regimental Junior Leadership School. This was a one week trip. During this trip I learned many things and due to COVID, it was a very different experience from other Young Marines’ JLS experience.

When I arrived we first were given the info of our bunks, our JlS 1st Sgt, and had our temperature tested. We spent most of the day learning the rules and doing fun activities while we waited for the rest of the Young Marines to arrive.

On the second day we took the PFT that determined that we would pass. All the Young Marines scored a 250, allowing them to continue through JLS. We then went to the chow hall to start classes. Over the week, we had classes on leadership skills, map and compass, U.S. and Young Marines history, public speaking, and many more. At the end of day two, we watched Midway, the movie about the 1942 battle for Midway.

On day three, we received our drill cards. My Young Marine staff for the squad was YM/GySgt Inso of the Music City (TN) Young Marines. For the remainder of the week we took our final test, had a uniform inspection and drill evaluation.

On the last day, we all received our certificates of graduation and witnessed the retirement ceremony for Young Marine MSgt Robinson.

During this entire week, the staff of JlS made sure we wore our masks when we were told, took our temperatures every morning, had everyone uses hand sanitizer before entering for chow, and made sure we were all safe.

The one thing I took away from my experience at Jls, is that if we work as a team, we can get the job done.

The Tennessee Regimental Leadership School 2020 (The COVID 19 Edition) Masks and Motivated Young Marines Were Present Everywhere!

Tennessee Regimental Leadership Academy made history as the first leadership school held during the Coronavirus, from July 25 to July 31, 2020. The school staff met the day before the academy began to discuss how the school would run with the new health protocols in place because of COVID-19.

It was agreed upon and made clear that everyone will hold each other accountable by wearing facial masks and properly sanitizing to and from classes, head and water breaks, chow, and other events. After all the students checked in to the academy, with masks up, we gathered into the chow hall for the school Director, David Assfalg explained the rules and expectations of the academy and introduced the adult staff and cadre. Afterward, the Division 3 YMOY, YM/Sgt Maj Massingill, and YM/GySgt Inso gave a class on one of the main ranking factors of every leadership school, which is the Leadership Evaluation Form.

The following days the academy students and staff wore masks everywhere they went from reveille, morning PT, chow, classes, and even during close order drill to hygiene at the end of the day. There were also a few fun things that were added to the schedule to give the students a break from having to be serious all day. In the middle of the week, we had a movie night, and the next, we had a flag retirement ceremony as well as s’ mores.

The cadre and staff persevered despite having a fluid schedule because of the changes in weather and holding the students as well as themselves accountable to abiding by COVID 19 health protocols.

The school’s success is also due in part of the students’ willingness to learn how to be better leaders for their units.

Attending Senior Leadership School Despite the Pandemic

Leadership schools are an important part of the Young Marines program. Not only do they teach you important life and leadership skills, they also help you form bonds that last throughout your Young Marines career. The COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to the meeting and the camaraderie building of Young Marines. Many of us hoped the leadership schools and SPACES events would still occur, but for many Young Marines, plans were changed and many were cancelled. I was scheduled to attend SLS in Oregon, and when I found out about the cancellation of the National Leadership Academy, I immediately looked for a school that was still open. Thankfully, there was one I could attend in North Carolina hosted by Greg Ross. My Unit Commander and my parents helped make it happen for me.

I have flown to a SPACES school before, but this was different. It was strange to fly from California to North Carolina with everyone in the airport and on the airplane wearing masks and trying to stay six feet apart. The airports were quiet and the planes were only half full. The short lines made for a pleasant traveling experience.

The school was meticulously planned to insure the safety of the Young Marines (both Senior and Junior Leadership Schools were conducted) and the adult volunteers. Masks were a requirement whenever we were inside and, if someone forgot a mask, there was a large supply at our disposal.

To help maintain the social distancing at night, we were each given our own tent. Our hands were sanitized more than three times a day, and our temperature was checked before every meal. While eating, we were appropriately spaced to reduce any risk. The staff were completely dedicated to our safety, and our training.

COVID-19 restrictions obviously made it challenging for normal Young Marines activities to take place and the staff planned our day with this in mind. Everything we did was done at a safe distance, and done with precautions. However, the school still provided all of the important aspects of a leadership school. We practiced drill, we attended classes, our uniforms were inspected and in spite of COVID-19, we still built camaraderie and we were a tight group.

Despite the restrictions and humid North Carolina weather (and my first and hopefully last encounter with chiggers), it was a unique and rewarding experience. Not only am I knowledgeable of Senior Guide book information, but I am also an evolved, more patient, and more effective leader.

For those of you who are worried about going to a leadership school during this pandemic, I assure you that all the adults and cadre are dedicated to your safety, as well as your education!

The Experience: A Week at D5 Junior Leadership School

From August 10, at 1900 until our graduation at 1700 on August 15, we were put through one week of the most intense leadership training I’ve ever experienced, Division 5 Junior Leadership School. Reveille sounded at 0600 every morning. We then marched down to the chow hall and stood there at parade rest for about 30 minutes before going in to eat chow.

After chow, we usually marched down to the drill/ P.T. field for some physical fitness. One of the days, we did something called the Axias challenge. It is the hardest challenge I’ve ever been through; physically, mentally, and emotionally. Some of the events included lunge holds, sprints, crunches, planks, legs six inches off of the deck, Spider-Man push-ups, and diamond push-ups. Some Young Marines cried (including me), but in the end only five of the 38 Young Marines were able to YM/LCpl Matthew Waller stands at parade complete the challenge and, I was one of them.

We also had leadership classes. We were led through this amazing school rest in preparation for the uniform inspection. by our cadres; Division 1 Young Marine of the Year, YM/SgtMaj Myers, YM/Sgt Inset: Morning PT at JLS. Chunn, YM/GySgt Mann, and YM/1st Sgt “Moose” Meldrum. Finally, I would like to thank the Alumni Association for the scholarship, and thank you to all the amazing staff and cadres for giving me the best Junior Leadership School. experience possible.

JLS: A Time to Learn Some Great and Amazing Things

I’m writing to share my experience in Junior Leadership School in July, 2020 with Division 2 North Carolina Regiment, in Asheboro, NC. The fun part about this “camp “ is that each Young Marine had to sleep in an individual tent without sharing it with any other.

The JLS staff members made the classroom time super fun, even though the PT time during the scorching temperatures was hard to endure. Because of COVID-19, the staff had to check our temperatures three times per day and wear masks all the time to make sure everyone stayed safe and healthy.

Every day we had to be up at 7:00 a.m. and lights out at 10:00 p.m. After each breakfast (chow) we had classes until dinner time, but with lunch break. Monday and Thursday we had PT tests.

During the daily classes we learned about physical fitness and its components. We learned about the 11 principles of leadership and what each of them means: -Know yourself and seek improvement -Be technically and tactically proficient -Know your Young Marines and look after their welfare -Keep your Young Marines informed -Set an example -Ensure the task is understood and supervised throughout completion -Train your Young marines as a team -Make sound and timely decisions -Develop a sense of responsibility among your subordinates

-Employ your command in accordance with its capabilities -Take responsibility for your actions and the actions of your Young Marines.

We also learned about public speaking, we talked in detail about each Young Marines rank as well as the duties and responsibilities of adult staff and what each billet does or represents.

We learned essential subjects and important Young Marines facts, about the qualities of a leader and 14 leadership traits.

My favorite parts of the class were learning how to tie knots, how to use a map and compass and lastly about citizenship attributions.

While I was there we did an amazing activity with learning the map and compass. We were given a card and we had to follow 3 points to get to our final destination.

During the week we had multiple tests on a variety of subjects such as public speaking, drill, and physical fitness. We also had some written tests. On Friday we had uniform inspection so we could prepare for Graduation day. On Saturday, graduation day, we each got our certificates for completing Junior Leadership School. I had a great time while I was there and I made a lot of new friends with the other Young Marines from different units.

Junior Leadership School taught me how to become a better leader and I think this would be a great opportunity for other Young Marines to experience as well. I thank the school director, Mr. Greg Ross, and all the staff members for the opportunity and for teaching us great and amazing things.

This year, I went on an unforgettable trip to Washington DC. I was fortunate enough to attend the National Museum of the Marine Corps for the ribbon cutting, opening a completely new exhibit/classroom devoted to the Young Marines program.

My brother, YM/Cpl Kalib Solomon, and I were honored to be selected to present the colors at the museum for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. While we were there, we met YM/SgtMaj Megan Lynch, National 2019-2020 National Young Marine of the Year. The movie premiere that Young Marines and adult staff produced is amazing and motivating.

At the premiere, we met the current Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Troy E. Black. Shaking the hand of such a highranking Marine was a huge honor. Another highlight was being coined by the National Director of the Young Marines program, Col. William Davis, as well as meeting a previous Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. We had the pleasure of meeting a Medal of Honor recipient, Harvey C. Barnum, who is a retired United States Marine Corps Officer. My fellow Young Marine, YM/PFC Smith, and I were coined by Colonel Barnum with a Congressional Medal of Honor Society coin.

That evening, we sat down to dinner with Col Mike Kessler, Mr. Joe Lusignan, Major General James Kessler, and former National Young Marine of the Year Dakota Orr (neĂŠ Richter).

That night was amazing!

Part of the mission of the Young Marines is to honor our veterans and a good way to do that is by researching them.

So, I chose to research and study about some of the famous veterans I met that weekend in order to honor them.

Over the weekend, we saw many of the beautiful monuments in DC. One of my favorites was the Lincoln Memorial. I've always wanted to go there and see the giant statue of Lincoln. I am thankful I was able to experience this trip with my fellow Young Marines, YM/Cpl Solomon and YM/ PFC Smith, as well as Mr. Solomon (support staff), Ms. Lynne Arnold (Unit Commander), and Mr. Smith (a fun and encouraging parent). These adults encouraged us throughout the whole weekend and provided us with experiences we will never forget.

Stay motivated. Stay strong. Keep honoring our veterans.

Pride and Purpose Characterize Community Service

I’ve been active with the Natchaug River Young Marines for five years, and I am thankful that my Unit Commander, Joseph Couture (USMC Ret) has been there throughout all of them. Mr. Couture is very active with our Young Marines’ lives.

Intrigued to learn more about his insights into community service, I interview our Unit Commander.

“I participate in community service because I love giving back to the community, and for the feeling you get knowing that an event or even another organization was successful, possibly because you were there to assist them.” Couture said.

The Natchaug River Young Marines participate in numerous community service events every year, and Joseph Couture is there for many of them.

“The most enjoyment I get out of community service events is watching the Young Marine leaders, lead their teams to success and the interaction they have with the public. It gives me great pride knowing that the Young Marines program is creating the leaders of tomorrow and that we are making a difference”, Mr. Couture wrote.

Our unit likes to reward Young Marines with a fun encampment after one of our biggest annual community service events, parking cars for Fairview Farms at the Woodstock Fair in Woodstock, CT. In the photo, you see that our Unit Commander was enjoying a pie to the face, after losing to the other team in a cardboard boat contest.

After interviewing my Unit Commander, I now have a better understanding of why he has so much passion and dedication for community service. This was a truly memorable interview and I encourage Young Marines to interview one of their Adult Volunteers, or a community service volunteer, and really see why they choose to serve.

Community service provides the opportunity for the formal as well as plenty of time for fun in the Natchaug River (CT) Young Marines.

Imagine School Young Marines Target: Archery Skills

By YM/Cpl Brian Pavluchuk Imagine School (FL) Florida’s Imagine at North Port Young Marines participated in a summer of archery lessons.

Young Marines were first briefed about safety to ensure they would know and follow the rules of the range. Safety on the range is essential.

The next lesson the Young Marines learned was how to use and shoot a compound bow accurately. Then, it is off to the shooting line.

There, Young Marines wait patiently for the whistle commands. There are several different whistle blasts that they must pay close attention in order to hear. One whistle is sounded to shoot, two, to grab bows, three to retrieve arrows, and five or more indicates an emergency.

Being well disciplined, Young Marines had no problems following the commands and instructions given.

For many Young Marines, it can be difficult at first for a few reasons. When shooting a bow, you are using several different muscles, some muscles you do not normally use. A Young Marine does not have to be a sports superstar in order to excel at archery. However, It does take practice and consistency to be a great archer.

Archery became so popular with our unit this summer, that more lessons were offered. Advanced archery lessons were also added. The best part of the lesson was the tournament at the end.

Earning Something Nobody Can Take Away From Me

I am part of the North Valley (AZ) Young Marines unit and I recently completed recruit training and graduated as my unit’s honor graduate. The Young Marines program -teaches leadership, teamwork, and self discipline. It also promotes the idea of living a healthy drug free lifestyle. I want to talk about Young Marines recruit training.

I started recruit training thinking that I was just doing this so that I could have something to do. I thought, “Hey, my parents are both former active duty Marines and I have nothing to do, so why not?”.

I had no idea how much this program and training was going to mean to me. Having completed recruit training, I can see the inner strength and confidence I am developing.

When I earned the title of Young Marine, I

became a part of something bigger than myself.

When I got home the night of recruit graduation, I was talking with my step father, who is a veteran Sergeant in the Marine Corps, and he told me something that I really had not thought of before.

“When you earn that title, nobody can take it from you”. During the first day of recruit training I wanted to give up, but I pushed through and eventually made it to encampment. I pushed through the first day of encampment but then when we went to bed I started crying. It was the hardest thing I had ever done in my life. I just kept pushing through the second day and when I got home I was as proud and happy as I have ever been. I am looking forward to learning all the things that the Young Marines teach such as firearms safety rules, marksmanship, and leadership skills. I hope that this article encourages others join the Young Marines as well.

Wyoming YMs: An Opportunity to Soar Over Casper

On September 19, 2020, the Casper Mountain (WY) Young Marines went to the Natrona County International Airport to do the Young Eagles Flights as part of our drill.

When we got there, we each signed up to get on the airplanes. We got to have a wonderful breakfast while we waited our turn. They would call up three (WY) at a time. I was in the fifth group. That group was me, another Young Marine

and another person. We went through how the plane controls worked and why we needed them. We got in the plane (a Cessna 210B) and got buckled in.

We started to taxi around the runway and finally we took off. I do not enjoy flying in a big plane, but these little planes were fun!

We circled around Casper and saw some awesome sights.

Whenever we were up in the plane it was like the whole city was a mini replica of Casper. After we landed, we were given certificates and flight logs for participating.

A FLAG for Your Service Service Project Honors Our Veterans by Providing Flagpoles and Flags

Growing up in San Diego, a major hub of military members, and a few minutes away from a Naval and Marine Corps Base, it became an everyday occurrence to see military members, either active duty or retired. There are so many veterans who live in our communities that go unnoticed every single day. I first started realizing how many veterans were around me by the stickers showing their ranks, branch, and wars they fought in on the back of their cars. This struck me, as I never realized how many there were. I wanted to come up with an idea that ensured I would not only recognize their sacrifices, but others would appreciate them as well. In order to pay back the years they served in order to maintain our freedom, I knew I needed to do something that would allow others to see who the veterans were around us.

I founded the program, Valuing our Veterans (a community service project) to honor veterans by donating a flagpole and flags to veterans. I raise funds from organizations such as the VFW, Elks Lodge, Town Councils, private donors, Go Fund Me Pages and recycling bottles and cans. I contacted Uncommon Valor, a company which sells flags and flagpoles. I was able to

secure a lower price and was able to place bulk orders for flagpoles. From the funds raised, I will purchase 20-foot long aluminum flag poles that include a United States Flag and a flag of their military branch.

After I find a veteran to honor, Young Marines go to the veteran’s house and dig a hole and concrete in a base for the flagpole. We return at a later date and install the flagpole at a ceremony for the veteran.

During the ceremony, we raise their flags for the first time. An Honor Platoon of about 30 Young Marines march in formation to the front of the veteran’s house and then a Young Marines Color Guard raises the flag while a Young Marine introduces the veteran and talks about their military service.

The veterans love this part of the dedication ceremony because they love speaking to the Young Marines about their life experiences.

The first flag pole we put in was extremely special to me and the Miramar Young Marines. In 2014, Command Master Chief Electrician (Ret) Tom Langley was the first veteran to receive a flagpole and flag set from my Valuing our Veterans flagpole program.

Mr. Langley was honored to have been selected to receive his flagpole and flags and flew them every day.

The flag presentation ceremony was featured in the local 92129 magazine and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Mr. Langley immediately called me when he saw the story and photograph in the paper and said he saved a copy for me.

Mr. Langley lived just down the block from me. He served in the United States Navy for 30 years. He was a Vietnam and Desert Storm veteran. Mr. Langley had been retired for a number of years when he was recalled to be deployed to Desert Storm. He laughed as he told me the story of being recalled, saying, “After I really believed I was actually be-

ing recalled I realized I had a big problem, I had no uniforms that fit me!�

Mr. Langley was one of the many veterans we have been able to commemorate by donating a flagpole and flags to over the past few years of the Valuing our Veterans program. This program continues to thrive and we will honor many more veterans with a flagpole and flags of their own.

I would love for the Valuing our Veterans program to be conducted by other Young Marines throughout the Nation

so that we could honor as many veterans as possible. Any Young Marine willing to take on the program for their unit can contact me and obtain all the information about the program from how to fund raise to how to purchase and install the flagpoles.

Miramar YMs Earn Promotions Using Distance Learning During the pandemic, using distance learning, Miramar (CA) Young Marines have been working extremely hard. They have been participating in the Young Marines Online Training Course in order to study various Young Marines subjects, maintain physical fitness, and to keep current on their mandatory Drug Demand Reduction hours.

Using online video conferences, the Young Marines have been able to obtain the necessary guide book sign-offs for promotion. To date, a total of 19 Miramar Young Marines have obtained promotions via distance learning and video interviews during the pandemic.

On July 11, 2020, the Miramar Young Marines were able to schedule Promotion Boards via online video conference. The Young Marines, dressed in full uniform, presented themselves

for inspection, answered uniform inspection questions, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, Creed, and Obligation, and then answered a wide-ranging number of questions from the interview board.

I am proud to announce several hard-charging Miramar Young Marines earned promotions.

Promoted to Young Marine Private First Class were Rogan Elliman, Mason Helmer, and Tessa Tallent.

Promoted to Young Marine Staff Sergeant were Andrew Mayer and Jonathan Zhou.

Promoted to Young Marines Gunnery Sergeant was Ethan Mayer.

Congratulations Young Marines. I am proud of you!

Perfect 500 PFT Score? Set Your Goal, Work to Achieve It

This is my story about how I achieved a Perfect 500 PFT score by hard work, determination, and perseverance through good times and hard times.

In April of 2019 I started my journey as a Recruit for the Young Marines of Cincinnati. Recruits who attended the parent meeting were directed to join in on some PT and I thought, “This isn’t too bad!” However, I wasn't in the best shape when I started. I was a little pudgy (and not the healthiest eater) but I wanted to better myself as I want to join the Marines in the future and knew I’d need to get healthier. My official first week I was pushed up to and beyond my limits with the PT way harder than the week before. I felt as if I wasn't ready, I couldn't catch a breath, and I questioned whether I should continue in the program or quit. That night, on the way home I told my mom of my feelings. She reminded me that this would get easier each week and that if I truly wanted to join the Marine Corps, then that would be even harder than this. She helped me see how I should never give up (even when I've given up on myself mentally) and I should work hard to better myself.

I would describe this time as the hardest I had ever been pushed. However, I didn't quit and I was determined to keep going. I kept coming back harder, pushing myself to keep going.

I came into the program at 185 lbs and that first week made me realize I needed to get in shape outside of weekly PT. I started running and working out, but not consistently yet. I mostly just focused on the PFT events and not strengthening my whole body. When my first PFT came around I had a good score of 340, but I wanted to improve on that even more and hoped to get over 400 and to have a First Class PFT. Over the summer, I started running up to three miles a few of times a week and working out my arms and core.

At the fall PFT I scored a 385, which was an improvement, but still not good enough for me. It gave me the motivation to get more serious, so I started making changes to my diet and increasing my workouts with the continued goal of hoping to get over 400 in the spring of 2020. But, as the winter wore on and I saw my weight begin to drop and my strength increase I decided I wanted to push myself harder and further than ever before...

I now wanted to achieve the Perfect PFT. My runs increased to three miles daily and I did pull-ups, curlups, pushups, and stretching at least once a day. In the spring, I joined the Division 5 HDF Challenge which consisted of missions for getting moving, eating well, creating goals, sleeping well, hydration, PT, and DDR. There was a week called The Gauntlet which was a combi-

nation of DDR and current and past PFT events. My increased running and workouts helped me start strong in The Gauntlet and the PFT events taught me many things such as techniques and how to properly perform the individual parts of the PFT. I pushed hard and ended up tied for first with another Young Marine!

This fueled a fire within me even more to want to achieve the perfect PFT. Because of the HDF Challenge, I took what I learned about the PFT events and I went a step further, researching how to incorporate more varied workouts for the whole body and ways to shorten my shuttle run time.

COVID-19 struck, so while social distancing was challenging, it also gave me the time to be at home more and to really focus my energy on a healthier, more active me. I started my own whole body 30-day challenge working all muscle groups in reps of 100 each day. Every week, I continued to run daily with at least one timed mile a week to know that it would earn me a 100 and I recorded having my curl-ups and pull-ups as each earning 100. I knew I could achieve 100 on my sit and reach. That just left shortening my shuttle run time, so daily I would practice a set of 5 runs working on my take off, sprinting, and turns. I knew I was definitely within reach of my perfect 500 goal!

The week of May 10th I felt ready to take on the Perfect PFT, so I scheduled time with Unit Commander Cardwell to do my PFT on May 16th. With my nerves on full blast and my adrenaline pumping, I took on each event and came out on top!

The Perfect PFT was mine.

Everyone was so proud of me, but no one more than myself!

I had achieved something that hadn’t been done in my Unit for many years.

I also motivated my fellow Young Marines of Cincinnati to want to work hard and reach their own Perfect PFT in the fall.

To help them, I will now be teaching a class on proper form and technique for each of the PFT events.

I was on a roll and shortly after the PFT I also found out I was the final top Young Marine for the HDF Challenge. My hard work and dedication to fitness helped me earn that, too.

My journey has shown that even when you think you're at the lowest point and you think you can’t continue (as I did at one time), if you put your mind to something you can achieve it.

Just remember, you need to keep pushing yourself harder and never give up. You need to make a goal and persevere through the pain and sweat and you'll start seeing little changes every day. Before you know it, you will reach your goal and have an awesome sense of pride.

I hope this motivates all who will read my story and wants to improve their own PFT scores. Now, get out there, put in the time, work hard, and earn YOUR Perfect PFT score!

YM/LCpl Jensyn Mc Dannell of the Gettysburg (PA) Young Marines scored a second Perfect PFT. Congratulations!

Congratulations are also in order for YM/Sgt Kaitlyn McDannell of the Gettysburg (PA) Young Marines, who recently scored a fourth Perfect PFT.

On October 3, YM/PFC W. Schumacher achieved a PFT score of 500. He is the second in his family to achieve a perfect PFT score. It was one of his brothers, YM/LCpl R. Schumacher, who achieved a PFT score of 500 (twice).

As a recruit YM/PFC W. Schumacher received a 470 in his PFT. After recruit training he followed that up with a score of 495. His determination to gain those 5 extra points clearly paid for him.

Discipline and Determination Lead to a 500 PFT Score

I’m YM/Cpl Andrew Mendelson, thirteen years old, and I have been in the Young Marines for almost three years. When I first started, it was rough. My first unit was the South Florida Young Marines.

During my recruit training I found out that I was not very strong, or athletic. My old Unit Commander, Mr. Barber, influenced me to become the person I am today. While I was a recruit, I had the urge to become better at everything that I was doing. I started working out, and studying for the three tests to show if I was ready to become a Private. I didn’t stop working, and when the test day came, I was ready. Later, one of the staff volunteers told me that I had nothing to worry about because I got a one hundred percent on all three tests. I was one of two people to do it in the entire class of twenty new recruits. This showed me that if I try, I can accomplish my dreams.

Soon, I graduated from a recruit to a private. The ceremony was one of the best experiences of my life. Along with all the others, I felt like I was on top of the world. I knew that I would find another goal, and I would achieve it. After a few regular PFTs over the next few months, I had an average score of four hundred and eighty (or twenty points away from the best score possible!). But sadly, my unit was closed.

I knew that I couldn’t stop there. I told my mother and father how we needed to find another unit so I could continue to accomplish my goals.

After a few weeks, we found the PFC Bruce W. Carter MOH Young Marines. I strived until could complete my goal, and it took a long time. My brother, YM/Cpl Nathan Mendelson, is extremely athletic. After finishing his recruit class, achieved a five hundred PFT score before anyone else in the unit. He has been quoted as saying, “I was going down a wrong path, and I needed to fix myself. I went into the Young Marines to better myself and the community as well. I found out that I could get a five hundred on the PFT, so I didn’t stop until I accomplished that goal. When I finally got a five hundred, I felt amazing, as if all the hard work had finally paid off.”

I endeavored to be as good, or even better, than my brother.

It is a friendly competition that I love. So, I worked hard, and I finally got a five hundred PFT score along with my brother.

It is known to the unit now that we work hard, and we won't stop until we accomplish our goals.

In conclusion, my brother and I have worked to be the best citizens possible, and we are trying to show the unit that hard work pays off. Now, it is more of a challenge for everyone in the unit to get a five hundred in the next PFT. I know that everyone can do it if we work at it, and we will be one of the best units in the nation. Everyone has all of the same chance to do it; however, it can only happen if we all are determined.

A Young Marine Corporal Reflects on His First Year

As I near the end of my first year, I have been able to take a moment to reflect upon my experiences. When I first joined the Young Marines, I did not expect much from the program and expected to tire quickly. As time passed, my fellow Young Marines and I grew closer and became a family; not to mention that my brother had already joined the program and encouraged me to continue.

Becoming more and more involved, I grew to love the program and quickly began attending community service events, got involved in Color Guard when possible, and began climbing through the ranks reaching my current rank of YM/Cpl. This program has given me the ability to not only increase my knowledge and skills to help me in life, but has also allowed me to challenge myself and increase my level of physical fit-

ness. Starting at a decent level of fitness, my challenge was getting a perfect score of 500 on my next PFT. After several tries, I achieved my goal. Now, my challenge is maintaining it.

In my time in the program, I have had the pleasure of attending several encampments and events. My first encampment was my recruit encampment. During that short period of time, the people who were once strangers to me, became a second family. It was there that I decided to stay in the program and do the best job possible. In addition to encampments with my unit, I have had the opportunity to meet with other units and spend a total of a week and a half with them, allowing me the chance to observe the ways that other units operate and attempting to implement that into my unit in order to improve it.

Being a Young Marine has been one of the best decisions I have had the pleasure of making. After this first year, I have high hopes and expectations for the years to follow.

Division Four: An Overview (and Congratulations)

We Look at Where We’ve Been, and Toward Our Division’s Future Goals Congratulations! All of our 2nd BN units have completed re-registration successfully without being locked out! Forward we go!!! Here's to a great year. Many changes have been implemented since I started with this program in 2007: • The Yellow Monster was replaced with leveled guidebooks.

• The database has grown from a simple bank of names and basic demographics to a fully functional training tool.

• National events have gone from a place "our kids could never reach" to something we are involved in every year.

• Our unit has 5 times the number of members we had in 2007.

• We have gone from barely functioning financially to being able to plan and hold events successfully with less financial stress.

• YMs are teaching other YMs with more confidence and effectiveness.

• An ALC was finally held in Texas!

• RATS have been eradicated! LOL! • More of our units are communicating with each other.

• DDR has developed.

• We now have YMs, RAs and MAVs (Motivated Adult Volunteers – yes, you can use this too-everyone wants a title!)

Many things are still the same...

• Running a unit takes a lot of time to do it well.

• There are so many good things we could be doing that it is easy to overbook a calendar and wear out our staff.

• Kids are still kids and parents are still parents. (Need we say more?)

• Volunteers come to help- and sometimes leave when they realize it is real work.

• Funding is always less than we could use.

I was a member of a youth organization outside of school when I was in middle school and high school. There I learned public speaking, achieved goals and gained confidence. I traveled to other parts of the state and country developing friendships and meeting wonderful people while being supervised by credible adults, and my future was forever changed. This is what we have to offer our YMs. The need for this kind of training is huge in our communities. As an educator, I am personally aware of the need our families have for support in discipline, help communicating, and a place to learn these things in a non-judgmental environment. This program is designed for children, but we are benefitting adults as well. The thing that keeps me going is the potential growth each of our members will come to know as reality. I am so proud of the program, the adults who volunteer, and the results we see in our families.

So... let's pull together to help our kids get the most out of this amazing program.

The Cay: Lessons in Overcoming Conflicts, Adversity

In The Cay, Phillip is an eleven year old boy who lives In Curacao during World War II. Phillip’s mother wants to move to Virginia for Phillip’s safety because there are German submarines around the island. On their trip to Virginia, the SS Hato is hit by enemy torpedoes, as they prepare to leave the ship, Phillip hits his head.

He wakes up four hours later on a raft floating in the middle of the Carribean Sea. He was saved by one of the deck workers on the SS Hato. The man who saved him was an older black man named Timothy. The only people on the raft are Timothy and a black and grey cat named Stew. Timothy is from the West Indies and he has an accent. Phillip has difficulty understanding him. Phillip initially thinks that Timothy is very ugly. On the raft, Phillip’s vision is blurred because of his head injury. Timothy tells him to lie down.

When Phillip wakes up, he has completely lost his vision.

Now, Phillip must trust Timothy in order to survive.

After four days on the raft , Timothy spots a tiny island.

Timothy builds a small hut for Phillip, Stew (the cat) and himself. He builds a fire, so they can be spotted (and rescued) if planes or schooners see them.

They do not have much on the island; they have a knife, a water keg and a few matches. The island they were on is a very tiny unnamed island in the Devil’s Mouth. When they are first on the cay, Phillip and Timothy struggle to get

along. However, Phillip starts to appreciate Timothy, who teaches Phillip how to get water, food and how to start a fire (although he is blind).

One night it rains on the island and Timothy builds a container to catch the rain. The roof of the hut Timothy built leaks, but they do not mind as they sleep with their mouths open. In July, Timothy said he could tell a storm was coming. He was nervous because if a storm came this early in the season, it will usually be a very bad one.

Timothy ties the water keg and knives and fishing hooks to a palm tree and then saves the remaining rope so he can tie around Phillip and himself so they won't fly away in a strong storm.

They all survive the storm but it weakens Timothy. Phillip uses the skills Timothy taught him to survive and is ultimately rescued.

From this story of conflict, friendship and survival, we learn that every conflict can have a positive outcome, and if both the opposing arguments can come to an agreement they will both be winners.

Young Marines Online Training: A Way to Stay Engaged

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the whole world and we are experiencing challenging times. Online training is not a novel concept; however, online training is a new learning platform for many students, including the Young Marines. Kudos to the organizers, YM/MGySgt Sophia Righthouse, Mrs. Susan Righthouse, and the others involved, who worked tirelessly to put together an online training program specifically for the Young Marines.

The training encourages Young Marines to engage in the program during the COVID-19 pandemic while being sheltered-in-place. Since we are unable to have in-person drills and events, the online training allows the Young Marines to hone their skills and knowledge of the program. It allows Young Marines the opportunity to continue to be involved in the program despite Shelter-in-Place restrictions were put in place. The training covers a variety of Young Marine subjects such as Rank-Specific Training, Drug Demand Reduction, Close Order Drill, Physical Fitness, Leadership, Ribbon High-

lights, Science, and History. Since March 2020, online training material was posted in the YMOT Google Classroom every Monday and Zoom meetings were also held to teach specific topics and practice skills.

The Young Marines Online Training gave me the opportunity to be involved. I was able to contribute science experiment material as part of the curriculum which enabled me to enrich my knowledge in science and enhance my skills in preparing presentations and videography. When summer break started, the Python Codeathon class was added to teach the essential skills for coding. Young Marines learn the basics of code by learning Python through hands-on programming exercises, in addition to improving typing skills and basic computer programming terminology. Python Coding classes have been very successful for a few weeks now. The end goal of these coding classes is for attendees to emerge as good beginner coders! By teaching Python, I was able to reinforce my Python expertise and it allowed me to learn and demonstrate logical thinking, leadership, communication, and problemsolving skills.

I am very thankful for those individuals associated with making this training a success and the support I received from my unit. Without them, I probably wouldn’t have improved my skills and knowledge in Close Order Drill, Science, or Python!
