First Comes Free Rides, Then Comes Marriage

H

onestly, I can say I owe my existence to the allure of the Ferris wheel.

In the fall of 1959 the fair came to my parents' hometown of Wharton, Texas. My mom was 14; dad 16. Dad had eyed my mother, Betty Strickland, in band class. He was first chair trumpeter, and she hung out toward the back of the clarinets. He'd noticed that while she was not such a great musician, she "sure was cute." He wanted to ask her out, and the fair seemed a great opportunity - fun without a lot of alone time to try and make conversation with someone he didn't know. He decided to call her at home instead of approaching her in person at school.

A gentleman caller was a big deal in my mother's house. Understandably, it was a new occurrence. At 14, mom had never really had a date. But also on the day that my dad made the telephone call to invite mom to the fair, my grandmother was not home. Mom had only her siblings - an 11-year-old brother and an 8-year-old sister - to consult about the proposition.

The 8-year-old answered the phone and loudly announced "Betty, it's a boy!"

Typical, right?

So they all came running and gathered in the small hallway around the wall nook specifically designed to hold the heavy, black two-piece rotary dialer and inclusive of a separate shelf below to hold the phone book.

Mother took the receiver from her younger sister and listened to my father's nervous invitation and then said, "Let me see. Can you hold?"

She confided in her siblings: "This is Ernest Schluter, and he is asking me to go to the fair with him."

My uncle sang the silly teasing song spanning generations, so unknowingly foreshadowing in this case, "Betty and Ernest sittin' in a tree, K.I.S.S.I.N.G.; first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Betty and the baby carriage," and ran off. But my aunt, logical beyond her years, said, "Don't be stupid. Say 'yes,' he'll pay for all of your rides."

The profundity of my aunt's words led to the first of many dates, love, marriage, and, yes, the baby carriage with me in it. But my mother will tell you the most memorable moment of her date that night with my dad was on the Ferris wheel. He was/is afraid of heights and had a panic attack, which made my mother completely endeared to him.

Month's end, you, too, can ride the Ferris wheel on the midway at Ford Park during the annual YMBL South Texas State Fair & Rodeo, March 26-April 5.

Audubon ’ s Leg a cy

Rare Visual Audio Presentation of John James Audubon Presented at the Stark Museum of Art by shelly vitanza ne of the rarest compilations of John James Audubon’s work will go on exhibit at the Stark Museum of Art March 28. The public can expect to see not only exquisite, one-of-a-kind watercolor drawings and paintings of birds and mammals but also read and listen to a detailed history of the man, the chronology and scope of his life’s work.

“John James Audubon wanted to document every American bird and show it in action in life size and life like and then to share it with others,” said Sarah Boehme, curator at the Stark Museum of Art. “So he did watercolor drawings and then had those drawings made into prints to be bound in volumes producing the world’s most sumptuous publications that had 435 individual prints of birds.”

The book, “Birds of America,” Audubon’s most famous work, sold to subscribers five prints at a time between 1827 and 1838. Only 200 copies were produced of the individual prints of birds all drawn to life size.

The Stark Museum of Art has one of the few completed and bound volumes of the book in existence.

“His work is very modern showing the interrelationships in nature,” said Boehme. “Most artists preceding him show physical appearances of animals, profiles and some features, but he wanted to show animals in action and in settings appropriate to the animal.”

H.J. Lutcher Stark began collecting the Audubon pieces in 1950 working with a book dealer who acquired them from collectors all over the world.

Most of the work can be traced back to the original subscribers. Other complete compilations can be found at a few specialty libraries and museums around the world.

Stark’s “Birds of America” is particularly extraordinary because it goes back to Audubon himself.

Te r r i Fox When Terri Fox attained her bachelor of arts from Lamar University in studio mixed-media sculpture, with an emphasis on art history and arts administration, she never dreamed she’d build movie sets. Even further from her life’s vision – moving from Los Angeles back to her Southeast Texas home to work as the Stark Museum of Art’s exhibitions designer and manager.

Fox’s life journey is completely logical in a creative kind of way, just like Fox, who is an analytical thinker and an artist.

As a student at Lamar, Fox began designing exhibits at The Art Studio and designing indie film, TV commercial and music video sets in Houston.

“I think it's interesting when I was at Lamar getting an art degree in studio arts I learned to use all of the tools - computer, ceramics, photography, welding, woodworking, and I think it's important especially in an art department that kids learn to use all of those tools,” said Fox. “When I moved to the film business I had to use all of those skills, and today I use all of those skills I learned then. You can’t just walk on a set and be a director, you know, you have to have those tools.”

Sar a h B o e hm e Sarah Boehme gives substance to Terri Fox’s surfaces. Boehme is the Stark Museum of Art’s curator providing scholarly underpinning to all of the museum’s presentations or exhibitions to make an “impact on people through art.”

Boehme (rhymes with name) is a native of Orange. She attended Lutcher Stark Senior High School and then went away to Sarah Lawrence College in New York and then Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania where she finished her master’s degree in art history. Boehme took a break from academic studies and taught school for several years before returning to Bryn Mawr for her Ph.D., which she completed in art history.

“He had it bound differently than the others; they were not organized, but this one is by family, genre and species,” said Boehme. “When subscribers got their prints, they’d receive an array of types of birds – a very large bird and a medium-sized bird, but he had the original more in order. And he made corrections on later plates that went to the printer. Let’s say he couldn’t find the female of a species until later, he’d correct the plate to the printer. We have those that he corrected.”

In addition to the “Birds of America,” which is printed on giant pages called double elephant folios in order to accommodate Audubon’s drawings of larger birds like the flamingo, great blue heron and whooping crane, the Stark Audubon collection also includes an octavo, meaning an eighth of the larger book. It was sold to subscribers but was more manageable and less expensive to produce and purchase.

Audubon is most renowned for his bird watercolors, but the self-taught artist and naturalist also completed works of mammals. The Stark collection includes Audubon’s “Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America,” 150 prints of animals that have four legs and bear their young alive.

works of Audubon but also examines the artist and his life.

“I want the public to understand more about Audubon, the man,” said Fox. “Everyone immediately gets a visual of his prints, his bird prints, but to dig a little deeper and get the scope of this huge project he took on, so people know that it was a lifetime project. You’ll see big images of Audubon’s face, graphics from his life at age 20 through age 70. It’s not just about his birds; it’s about him.”

Both Fox and Boehme think the public will find Audubon, the man, very interesting. For starters he was the illegitimate son of a ship captain born in Haiti and raised in France by his step mother. He was a failed businessman who spent time in jail, turned his hobby into a career and with the help of a strong lifepartner, his wife, Lucy, and their sons, gained respect for his work, not in the U.S. but in Europe.

“He was quite an individual,” said Boehme.

“He had a wonderful relationship with his wife, but it went through a lot; he was gone for long periods of time, and his life had incredible obstacles, but yet he had this passion to bring to fruition this work.”

Five volumes of “Birds of America” will be on display with exhibition labels and large quotations in the galleries giving the idea behind each segment of the exhibition. Complementary to the written narrations, for the first time the Stark Museum of Art will offer audio tours utilizing personal cell phones.

While looking at the art, patrons will have the option to dial a number and hear a narrative about the piece, giving more depth to the works and more details about Audubon’s life.

“I think art is inspiring, and it excites our creativity and is so much a part of history and defining who we are,” said Boehme. “So in presenting this collection (John Audubon) it represents our values, our history and who we are as people.”

The Stark Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost for entry is free for Stark Cultural Venue members and toddlers 3 and under; $6 for adults; $5 for seniors (65 and up), students (with a current I.D.) and youth (10-17); $2 for children (4-9). Also while at Lamar, Fox’s art history professor sent the class east to view Albert Bierstadt’s paintings of the American West at the Stark Museum of Art. Fox thought the Bierstadt originals were “big and perfect,” but the museum static.

After graduation, Fox continued creating exhibits at the Banff Art Center in Canada and then launched a movie set production career that took her up and down the West Coast. Over time she settled in Los Angeles at the Autry National Center, a museum that explores art of the American West.

The theme seemed to prepare her for home because in 2007, Fox was called home to care for her ailing father. Coincidentally, the Stark Museum of Art had an opening for an exhibitions designer and manager.

“When I interviewed for the position, I told them, ‘Don't bring me to Texas and not let me do anything; I want people to come back and see what I've changed and what we're doing,’” said Fox. Fox got the job and she, along with a creative team, are doing things, lots of things. Within the last seven years, Fox says the museum has grown and all galleries have been remodeled including adding all new LED lighting.

“Our shows are growing in their complexity, and it makes me feel good; sometimes I am overwhelmed,” she says with a huge smile. “For example, I still need to frame all of the Audubon pieces. Luckily I was trained to do that at art school.”

A rare compilation of John Audubon’s original works of art will go on exhibit at the Stark Museum of Art at the end of March through July, and the entire team at Stark has worked to make the exhibit visually appealing, flowing with a common theme and interactive.

“My job is to make things that I may not be particularly interested in interesting to me and to the public,” said Fox. “I learned how to do that working on film and in commercials, especially the commercial industry. It doesn't have to be about what you like or don't like but interesting and appealing for the general public.”

Fox initially draws sketches of the exhibit, its flow and the placement of works of art. Then she builds a model or miniature of the galleries and the complete exhibit. Further she works to brainstorm activities and interactivity to involve and engage the community and finally implements the exhibit, essentially building it.

“I have a passion for what I do and encourage all students, male and female, equally to follow their passion because you don't know where it's going to end,” said Fox. “I didn't know it would come full circle - back to Texas and building the scenes in which the artwork is displayed. I had no idea my career would evolve in this way.”

Fox also still does her art and some film work. Her paintings are mixed media because she says she was trained “to abuse all media equally – ceramics, photography, woodworks, painting and a builder of props.”

Boehme continued

Boehme, who had studied Italian baroque art, was hired as the curator of western art at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Wyoming, a museum of mainly western American heritage.

“I was curator for the western art there, and it was a wonderful museum and a great collection to work with, and I loved Wyoming,” said Boehme. “But an opportunity came to come back to the Stark; it was a good time for a change, and it was exciting to come back to this extraordinary collection and to be able to work in my hometown and make an impact on people here.”

As curator Boehme researches art to understand the background of the collections and the exhibition items that go on view. She then writes about the art and the artist, providing history and giving meaning to each piece of work.

The Stark Museum of Art has an extraordinary collection with a primary focus in American western art featuring such artists as Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt whose art portrays land formations such as the Rocky Mountains, the geological wonders of Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. The Stark collection also includes Charles Marion Russell and Frederic Remington paintings that portray the life of the cowboy and the drama of life in the West. Still other strengths of the Stark Museum of Art, according to Boehme, are representations of the West, life, beauty, landscape and people in the early 20th century.

“It is an extraordinary collection that is in a place that is unexpected in a small town,” said Boehme.

“It’s an incredible resource for the pubic because of the depth and quality of what we're able to present here.”

Hosts a Weekend Featuring Everyone’s Favorite Epiphyte by shelly vitanza f you’ve ever brought an orchid home only to have it die on you, or just remain dormant – green without blooming – Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is where you need to be March 12-14. The entire weekend at the 221-acre Stark Cultural Venue in Orange will be devoted to Celebrate Orchids! with workshops, tours and lectures all about the world’s most prevalent epiphyte.

“When the orchid bug bites, you want to know how to grow it,” said Jennifer Buckner, Shangri La’s horticulture specialist. “There are so many different shapes and sizes, and they all kind of grow similarly, but all have tricks. It becomes fun to figure out how to grow this one or that one. And then when they bloom for you, you quickly learn it’s so worth it to have them as house plants or in your garden.”

Shangri La has three exhibition greenhouses, but one is an epiphyte house, which houses four different kinds of epiphytes, or plants that are attached to other plants in nature - lichen, ferns, bromeliads and orchids.

“Shangri La’s whole collection has close to 600 orchids,” said Buckner. “Some belonged to the Stark family. We can’t exactly date them, but quite a few were in Mr. Stark’s (H.J. Lutcher Stark) garden in the 60s and some of those same ones belonged to his grandmother Frances Lutcher, the ‘orchid lady,’ and his mother Miriam grew orchids; it was really an inherited hobby of the family.”

Although not all of the Stark orchids are in the Shangri La epiphyte house, many blooming varieties including the vanilla bean orchid will be showcased during the Celebrate Orchids! weekend, and tours will be ongoing during hours of operation, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

In addition Buckner will host a repotting workshop every day at 1 p.m. Space is limited, and there is a small fee for supplies. Additional orchid supplies will be available for purchase in the Shangri La gift shop.

On March 12 at 4 p.m. orchid enthusiasts are invited to learn how to purchase an orchid, what kind to purchase and how to maintain an orchid for long-term beauty and blooming during a lecture “Easy Orchids.” There is no fee to attend, but reservations are advised.

Especially sweet for the celebration, the Shangri La staff will make ice cream for all of those who “scream for orchids” from the vanilla bean, an orchid that is expected to be in full bloom during the weekend.

“If you have spring fever, come out,” said Buckner. “We have so many different orchids that have their bloom time late winter and early spring, and we’ll be showcasing them.”

Tru Dat means “True that,” which means, “I agree with that.” It’s an affirmative, approval or just a statement meaning, “I hear you,” “Yep, you’re right,” “Right on,” “Yup,” “I agree with everything you’re saying,” “Indeed.”

Like the words “bling,” meaning “shiny things” and “peeps” meaning “people,” tru dat, has urban origins and is considered ghetto slang but is making its way into the mainstream.

It’s just so widely appropriate and easy in many settings.

OK, bear with me because I know this is a stretch. The South Texas State Fair will be here this month, and the first things people think about are stomach-lurching rides, something on a stick, cotton candy, candied apples and viewing animals the kids have raised. And of course I have to ask myself, "What wine would that remind me of?"

Well it is Michael David Winery "Petite Petit,” and it is all because of the label not withstanding the fact that I love this wine. The wine label prominently features two large elephants sitting in an obvious circus background. Circus, fair — sort of similar.

The wine itself is big and bold like the illustrated pachyderms. This dense, opaque purple-colored wine is loaded with flavors of blueberry, blackberry and a hint of licorice and vanilla. The aroma follows a similar profile with a finish that is all fruit.

Michael David Winery is located in Lodi, Calif., and though it is not certified organic, the winery strives to use all natural methods including integrated pest management, beneficial insects for pest control, trellising, leaf pulling and natural-mined sulfur for mildew control.

Meet Farmers at Beaumont’s Market: Steve and Claire Socher The Beaumont Farmer’s Market will open for its third season March 14 and be open every Saturday until mid-November. The market is on College Street on the basketball court of the Beaumont Athletic Complex, a covered court adjacent to the softball fields and tennis courts and near Dowlen

Road. Market hours are 8–11 a.m., and during tomato season you’d better get there close to 8 to score your favorite variety.

Offerings vary depending on season, but all produce is locally grown and all products for sale are handmade. You’ll find berries and squash, okra and potatoes, onions and radishes plus eggs, meat, preserves, soaps, baked goods, plants and herbs. You’ll also find Steve and Claire Socher, weekend gardeners who purchased land a few years ago, then a few horses, then a few chickens and now they are building their house on the property to devote more time to farming. Farmer Steve is also doctor Steve, a urologist during the week. On weekends, though, he’s got kale for sale at the Beaumont Farmer’s Market.

Q: What’s the name of your farm and who farms it?

A: My wife Claire and I do. The farm name is Back Forty Farms here in Beaumont.

Q: How did you get into farming?

A: I have always been into vegetable gardening, and about four years ago I became interested in doing it successfully and organically/naturally on a larger scale. This will be our fourth year at the Farmer’s Market in Beaumont. It is a challenge to grow larger volumes with a quality that people will want to eat. We really got into farming to deliver a healthier and local option for people in the area.

The Beaumont Farmer's Market is a great venue for local farmers to sell and for people to have access to locally grown natural produce.

Q: What are you growing?

A: We are currently growing cilantro, lettuce, Brus-

sels sprouts, fennel, Swiss chard, celeriac (celery root), Napa cabbage, broccoli, beets, four different kales, daikon radishes, bok choi, komatsu summer greens, arugula, turnips, head cabbage. I have started to prepare for my spring crops that include 40 different heirloom tomato types, peppers, eggplant and much more.

Q: Are you organic?

A: We are not currently certified organic, but we grow everything with the organic/biodynamic method. We use no pesticides and no artificial fertilizers.

When able we use horse driven farm implements.

Q: Where can we get your produce?

A: Back 40 Farms will be at the Beaumont Farmer's Market on College Street starting in mid March. This year was our first to provide winter vegetables listed above via a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) like group. Folks can email us at Back40farms. tx@gmail.com, and we will add them to the list. This winter I had an on-farm distribution once a month.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge farming in Southeast Texas?

A: Weeds and bugs are the biggest challenge to farming in Beaumont, particularly in the spring and summer. We are having good success controlling weeds with cover crops and integrated planting. I try to keep the bugs down by crop rotation and beneficial insects.

Q: What are you most proud of?

A: I'm really proud of my fennel this year; it looks good and is quite tasty!

By Beth Gallaspy Fans of TV dance competition shows will have a rare chance to experience the excitement in person and step into the role of judge when “Dancing Pros Live!” makes a stop at the Lutcher Theater in Orange on March 10.

“We had the opportunity to add this show later on after our season had already started,” said Lynae Sanford, marketing manager at the Lutcher. “With everyone loving these dance shows on TV, like ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ we jumped at the chance.”

Audience members will see professional dancers from their favorite TV shows and international dance champions from around the world compete for the night’s top prize. And the audience will decide the winner! Each audience member will receive a voting device to weigh in on the results with the winner announced at the end of the evening.

Such an interactive experience is a first for the Lutcher, Sanford said. “It’s new to us, and we’re excited about it.”

Host for the live dance competition is Alan Thicke, TV father from “Growing Pains” and real-life father of singer Robin Thicke. Other performers in this touring production include Edyta Sliwinska and Chelsie Hightower from “Dancing with the Stars,” Angel Taylor from “The Voice” and Ryan Dilello from “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Competitors will dance in a number of styles including cha-cha, waltz, tango, swing, freestyle samba and jitterbug. Along with jaw-dropping performances, audiences

Le Grand Bal’s 40th anniversary honors “Legends of the Arts”

By Melissa Tilley Lamar University’s Friends of the Arts has honored many people instrumental in the arts in our community throughout its history. On Saturday, March 28, for the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Le Grand Bal, they will salute the “Legends of the Arts.” Artists, community supporters, campus leaders and friends of the arts from the last 40 years will be showcased for their service to Lamar and Southeast Texas arts. Those legends have helped make many of the great art exhibitions at the Dishman Art Museum possible.

Le Grand Bal Art Exhibition features over 200 works of art created by Lamar students, faculty, alumni and supporters and will be on view March 16-27 at the Dishman Art Museum.

Le Grand Bal includes a silent art auction from 6-8 p.m. in the Dishman Art Museum.

Each year for the Bal, an exhibition is organized featuring works of art created by Lamar students, faculty, alumni and supporters. This year’s exhibit includes more than 200 pieces of art. The event also includes a silent art auction where patrons have the opportunity to purchase one of these original pieces of art created by a professional artist or one of Lamar’s own young, talented artists, with proceeds benefitting arts programs. The Le Grand Bal Art Exhibition will be on view at the Dishman Art Museum beginning March 16 and culminating with the event on March 28. The exhibition represents a diverse range of original paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. It is always a unique exhibition with varied themes and the underlying unity of supporting Lamar’s artistic development.

Renowned artist and Lamar alumnus John Alexander will be the 2015 Bal’s honorary guest artist and attendee. A large piece of his art will be included in the silent auction, and his works will be projected as part of the Bal entertainment. In addition to an internationally successful career as an artist, Alexander is also the creator and co-owner of Crystal Head Vodka, which will be featured at the Bal. The black-tie event, which is the major annual fundraiser for Lamar’s College of Fine Arts and Communication, will also honor Michele and Mitch Smith, two community leaders who have dedicated their lives to helping promote and secure the future of the arts at Lamar University and throughout Southeast Texas. The evening will also include a special tribute to Russ Schultz, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication, who is retiring at the end of the academic year.

Mandie and Dr. Garrett Peel chair this year's event. Le Grand Bal 2015 will feature the silent art auction and reception from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Dishman Art Museum, followed by a gourmet buffet, dancing and entertainment from 7 p.m. to midnight in the Montagne Center. Moonlight Masquerade Ball:

A Tribute to Hollywood’s Golden Age

By Shelly Vitanza You want the moon? Just say the word, and the Beaumont Heritage Society will throw a lasso around it and pull it down, Jimmy Stewart style.

The Beaumont Heritage Society’s Third Annual Moonlight Masquerade Ball offers an invitation to don the glitzy and glamorous formal fashions of Hollywood’s Golden Age for a night of elegance under the stars on the grounds of a stately, century-old home on Beaumont’s historic Calder Avenue.

“The Chambers family lived in the house, at 2240 Calder, from 1914 until 2004 but they did the most change to the house in 1924, which was the beginning of Hollywood’s Golden Age,” said Alicia McKibben, executive director of the Beaumont Heritage Society. “The last two balls have focused on the Prohibition era, the 1920s, so we wanted to move forward a decade, and the Golden Age of Hollywood fit perfectly.”

McKibben said there is some indication that the Chambers family liked movies.

purchased in the 1950s for Self Park Drive-In Theater on old Port Arthur Road.

“It’s likely, too, that the Chambers sisters, who were 15 and 25 when the Jefferson Theatre opened on Nov. 14, 1927, were movie goers,” said McKibben.

Coincidentally, a massive painting in the entry of the Chambers home, titled “Arabs Last Stand,” is the work of Joseph Mataro, an artist best known for his movie poster renderings, including Golden Age movies “Curly Top” and “Heidi” starring Shirley Temple and “Seventh Heaven” starring Jimmy Stewart.

“The painting was purchased by the sisters during their travels to New York, and it’s in the downstairs parlor near the victrola, which everyone who attends our celebration can see,” said McKibben. “We’re opening up the first floor of the house during the cocktail hour of the event, which we’ve not done in the past.”

The classical-style evening begins with era-appropriate hors d’oeuvres and signature libations - Jean Harlows, light rum and vermouth, as well as Gin Fizz, a typical drink of Golden Agers.

Guests are encouraged to wear classical Hollywood formal fashions. McKibben said to ask yourself what Bette Davis or Lauren Bacall or Humphrey Bogart or Jimmy Stewart would wear.

Seating is limited to 192 people, and one ticket covers all costs for the evening, from valet parking to the open bar, McKibben said.

After cocktails, revelers will enjoy a seated dinner catered by Bando’s in a spacious tent on the museum grounds followed by dancing under the stars to the timeless sounds of the Night & Day Orchestra.

Attending the Moonlight Masquerade Ball will give Southeast Texans the chance to step into another era for one night helping the Beaumont Heritage Society’s mission of preserving the region’s past.

The society oversaw the restoration of the 1906 Chambers House beginning in 2004 and has offered tours since 2007. A significant preservation organization since the 1960s, the Beaumont Heritage Society also restored the city’s oldest home, the 1845 John Jay French House, and operates it as a museum.

Nostalgia and Novelty Make Memories

By Kathie Platt “It’s a grand night for singing; the stars are bright above. The earth is aglow, and, to add to the show, I think I am falling in love!” crooned the company of the Tony-award winning, Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “State Fair” 70 years ago. While trends have changed, the South Texas State Fair sustains an American tradition as timeless as the spinning lights of the carousel and as majestic as the Ferris wheel.

On a clear night the air is perfumed with mingling scents of barnyard animals and savory flavors to tempt the palate. Indulgent fairgoers splurge on fried funnel cakes, pork-a-bobs, sausage on a stick, cotton candy and fresh-squeezed lemonade!

The carnival midway has over 44 rides, including rides for the younger set, games of chance and mouthwatering concessions. For the first time this year, the fair introduces “OMG—Extreme Thrill Ride” and “Alpine Bobs.” A family favorite, the Kids Fun Zone in Ford Pavilion hosts an exotic petting zoo offering camel and pony rides.

Included in the price of admission is a Championship Pro Rodeo in Ford Arena, Friday and Satur-

day nights (March 27 & 28) of the first weekend, sponsored by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA), with its popular mutton bustin' contest for kids. The Harold Engstrom Memorial Special Kids Rodeo (a performance for mentally and physically challenged youth) begins 10 a.m. on opening day (March 26).

The first Sunday of the fair (March 29 this year) is Seniors’ Day offering free admission, free health checks, free Ferris wheel rides, Big Band music and an Elvis impersonator. Every year the South Texas State Fair also showcases 4-H and FFA youth entrepreneurs, culminating in a Junior Poultry & Rabbit Auction (April 1) & Livestock Auction (April 2) in Ford Arena. Last year students raised over $620,000.

Amateurs can compete in Art, Quilt and Photo Contests, displayed in the Ford Exhibit Hall along with over 200 exhibits and vendors peddling crafts, food, clothes and souvenirs. The Texas marine boat display, Ford-sponsored interactive driving, and live stingrays exhibit (a really big draw the past two years) -- are back by popular demand.

Live entertainment throughout the 11-day fair

will spotlight a variety of local bands and feature the Fearless Flores Family (of “America’s Got Talent” fame) thrilling audiences with a motorcycle high wire act and the “Cage of Death.”

For 72 years the Young Men’s Business League (today almost 1000 members strong) has sponsored the South Texas State Fair, pouring the profits back into the greater Beaumont community as a big contributor to over 50 local non-profit charities, including the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, Boys Haven. Girls Haven and the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life”.

"The YMBL is living proof that organizations of good purpose have a vital place in the life of every city," President Ronald Reagan praised the YMBL in a letter on its 65th anniversary in 1982.

This year’s 72nd South Texas State Fair brings the best of the past and the future together in the spirit of adventure and in the service of a great cause.

As of last count, nearly 17,000 fans have “liked” the fair on its Facebook page.

Nederland is a small town with big fun, especially in March when the Dutch-settled 5.7- square-mile community throws one of the family friendliest festivals in Southeast Texas. The Nederland Heritage Festival is March 17-22 and includes a carnival, parades, car show, art show, petting zoo, live entertainment, chili cook off, cuisine walk, craft market, food, vendors and tournaments of all kinds.

Strategically scheduled the week of Spring Break, one of the most popular attractions is the carnival offering levels of rides - kiddie, intermediate and thrill - for a variety of ages and speed-seekers.

devout dining Temple Emanuel Sisterhood's Deli Days Temple Emanuel Sisterhood's 28th Annual Deli Days will be Wednesday, March 4 from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (for delivery and pickup) and Thursday, March 5 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (for dine-in and pickup). This widely anticipated fundraiser features a New York-style deli meal that includes your choice of turkey or corned beef, homemade cole slaw, a kosher pickle and chips for $12. Each year, the Sisterhood spends countless hours preparing these lunches to raise money to support multiple charitable organizations in Southeast Texas. During last year's event, the Sisterhood served over 2,000 lunches over two days. The highlight of last year's event was the sponsorship of the Gift of Life Mammogram Van. Through this support, free mammograms were provided for those served by the Julie Rogers Gift of Life. Sisterhood volunteers welcomed clients of the Gift of Life into the Swerdlow-Roosth Social Hall of the Temple Emanuel for hospitality and comfort as they waited for free mammograms. Last year's proceeds also provided food for the hungry by sending funds to the Giving Field and to Nutrition & Services for Seniors as well as provided back-to-school backpacks for children served by Some Other Place and scholarships for Temple Emanuel children attending summer camp. This year's event will sponsor many of the same charities as last year.

In addition the creator of Deli Days, Mindy Eisen, who envisioned the food fundraiser 28 years ago, will be honored throughout the two-day feeding festivities.

St Joseph's Day 2015 This year's annual St. Joseph's Day will be held on Thursday, March 19, at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica Center, 700 Jefferson, Beaumont. By Beth Gallaspy Fresh air, a little exercise and the opportunity to do something good for someone else combine to make work days at the Giving Field some of the best free fun you can find in Southeast Texas. And you might pick up a few gardening tips, too!

“We try to educate volunteers on what they’re doing and why they’re doing it,” said Sharon Begnaud, co-founder and volunteer coordinator. “Not only are they contributing to feeding the hungry, but they’re also learning about organic gardening so that they can go home and have the confidence to start their own garden or do an existing garden organically.”

Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome at GIving Field work days each Monday and Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Groups and individuals who would like to volunteer at other times can contact Begnaud at sebegnaud@gmail.com.

No experience or special equipment is required.

Families, groups of friends or individuals can simply show up ready to work at the one-acre plot on Liberty Street near St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Any necessary gloves or tools will be provided. Be sure to wear something you don’t mind getting dirty.

Volunteers help with whatever jobs need to be done, Begnaud said. That might include harvesting organic vegetables, planting a new crop, pulling weeds or cleaning out the chicken coop.

Crops are donated to Some Other Place in Beaumont and the Hospitality Center in Port Arthur.

Since its inception in 2012, the Giving Field has logged more than 6,000 volunteer hours and donated nearly 15,000 pounds of fresh produce.

Organic Gardening Workshop Dig deeper into gardening at the Giving Field’s third annual Organic Gardening Workshop on Saturday, March 14. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a rotating schedule of classes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Giving Field’s gardens and in classrooms at St. Anne’s Catholic School.

Classes include Soil and Composting; Organic Fertilizers and Pest Control; Fruit Trees; Landscaping with Edibles and Container Gardening; Seasonal Planting; and a Cooking Demonstration.

Nutrition and Services for Seniors, the nonprofit organization that operates Southeast Texas’ Meals on Wheels for the homebound, is sprouting a donation garden. The “Grow to Share” project is a 1.12 acre plot of land adjacent to Nutrition and Services for Seniors at 4590 Concord Road being readied to grow fruits and vegetables for the Meals on Wheels community.

Both financial and physical help is needed to seed the garden. Nutrition and Services for Seniors needs donations to fence the property, construct an irrigation system, buy a shed and tools, assemble beds and put up signage, plus they need manpower to build beds, plant and harvest, and maintain the beds. For a donation of $400 you can honor a loved one by sponsoring a 4-by-20 raised bed. Orange Celebrates a Big Catch

Bassmaster Elite Series 2015, with Orange County River Festival

By Shelly Vitanza Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.AS.S.) will launch the 10th anniversary of its Bassmaster Elite Series presented by the Stark Cultural Venues from Orange on the Sabine River on March 19-22, commemorating one of the most popular elite tournaments in history. To celebrate the tournament, welcome anglers and involve the entire Southeast Texas community, the Orange Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Orange County River Festival.

Orange is one of eight sites chosen for the 2015 Elite Series because it’s considered one of the finest venues the sport has to offer for the best anglers in the business. In 2013 Bassmaster Elite Series on the Sabine River set an attendance record of more than 33,000 visitors during the four-day tournament, and Elite Angler Todd Faircloth caught nearly 50 pounds of bass to earn his fourth elite victory.

John Gothia, Bassmaster Elite Series and Orange County River Festival cochair with David Jones, said they approached B.A.S.S., the largest and oldest bass fishing organization in the U.S. and number one fishing conservation group in the country, about bringing the tournament to the Sabine River in 2013 with the promise of attracting at least 10,000 people. When the tournament saw numbers over 30,000 during the four-day competition, they knew they could make it bigger and better a second time.

“We knew it was going to be a tough tournament because it’s a river system not a lake situation,” said Gothia, a member of the Orange Chamber of Com-

merce. “But we wanted to bring some good positive recognition to our area, and anglers love a challenge. With several businesses supporting the event, and the Stark Cultural Venues as the title sponsor, we’re adding more music and activities, a carnival and fireworks, hoping to bring 40,000 out to the event this year.”

No doubt Orange and all of Southeast Texas will achieve recognition. Several ESPN channels, including ESPN Outdoors, will televise the Elite Series throughout the weekend. In addition, the economic impact of the event is significant.

Anglers preparing for the tournament began fishing up and down the Sabine learning the waters in early 2015, according to Gothia. On the weekend of the series, more than 100 anglers, their families, fans and several hundred members of the media are expected to move into the area in and around the Sabine.

“This event has a big impact economically on the area,” said Ida Schossow, president of the Orange Chamber of Commerce. “We broke attendance records in 2013, and we want to make it bigger and better than the last year the anglers were here by hosting the Orange County River Festival. We’ve added more entertainment and a 5K fun run. Everything but the fun run is free, including transportation to and from the boat ramp and all event venues.”

The riverfront festival, which will include the annual Art in the Park event, concerts, food vendors, kid entertainment, special activities and exhibits at the five Stark Cultural Venues – the Stark Museum of Art, the W.H. of the angling event until 11 p.m. (See schedule this page.) However, Schossow says the highlight of the Bassmaster event in 2013 for her was the 6:30 a.m. angler launch.

“It was a sight to see all the boats in water with their lights on at 6:30 a.m.,” said Schossow. “Two thousand of us were out there to see them off.”

Gothia is looking the most forward to a first-time Bassmaster Elite Series event that the Orange Chamber proposed to get kids involved in fishing.

“Bass fishing for high schoolers is growing enormously fast. This past winter 380 teens bass fished in a local tournament, so we wanted to tie the two together and bring kids into fish with pros,” said Gothia. “We’re going to have 12 high school teens that qualified to fish from the previous tournament fish with 12 pros on the Saturday of the Elite Series. It’s the first time ever Bassmaster has allowed that to happen. The kids get to weigh in with the pros they fish with.”

The eight-location series culminates in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY) Championship tournament later in the year. The Top 50 pros in final standings for the regular season will battle for the AOY title, berths in the 2016 Bassmaster Classic and shares of the $1 million AOY prize fund.

The Beauty of Natural Water Treatment: Cattail Marsh

World Class Birding and Animal Refuge

By Shelly Vitanza For the chance to see rare birds, alligators, swarms of dragonflies, toads and butterflies among beautiful flowers and plants, head to the back end of the city of Beaumont’s wastewater facility, adjacent Hillebrandt Bayou and Willow Marsh Bayou, to Cattail Marsh.

I know it’s hard to imagine beauty from wastewater. I couldn’t envision it either so I went to see for myself.

Last June, I spent a half day riding the eight miles of trails with George Newsome, water reclamation superintendent for the city of Beaumont for 28 years.

Newsome knowledgeably explained how eight independent wetlands units serve as the final stages of wastewater treatment before the water flows into Hillebrandt Bayou.

Frequently the proud Newsome stopped to allow me to photograph beautiful plants and exquisite birds all the while describing how the levees divide shallow-water cells of specifically chosen plants, 20-plus species of indigenous plants, in-

cluding prickleweed, California bulrush, four different species of arrowhead, cattails, duck weed and goose weed, that pull air from the environment down into the root mass encouraging oxygen and other biological activity, and ultimately consuming ammonia and cleaning the water naturally. The byproduct – the plants stay green year around creating a 900-acre wildlife refuge for aquatic animals and 350 species of migratory and resident birds.

Newsome, who called some of the alligators by name prompting them to the sound of his voice, was so proud the city of Beaumont decided to construct the wetlands in 1993 instead of building a sledge plant or traditional wastewater facility.

He also mentioned that people from around the world call Beaumont to find out how the wetlands were constructed and how they operate.

My time with Newsome was incredibly memorable for the natural beauty in the most unsuspecting of places – the back of Tyrrell Park just on the edge of Beaumont – but also because the jolly giant Newsome was so proud of the role he’d played

in creating beauty for the betterment of Beaumont and the world. Birdwatchers come from every corner of the earth to see the birds at the Cattail Marsh, not to mention the environmentalists and wildlife professionals who travel here to examine the natural processes of cleaning wastewater.

George Newsome died unexpectedly in September just months after my time with him. Regrettably I didn’t take one picture of Newsome that day, but I did get a photo of the alligator that he called by name. It’s included here, and I know Newsome would be delighted to know his gator got coverage.

Don’t miss the beauty of Cattail Marsh this spring or anytime of the year, really. It’s easy to get to at the back of Tyrrell Park; just follow the main road past the Beaumont Botanical Gardens, golf course and to the left of the stables, you’ll see signs for Cattail Marsh.

The program provides a unique opportunity for local business leaders to enjoy a delicious lunch and one-hour training session with a motivational speaker. By Blake Kyler If you’ve ever seen an episode of “Whose Line is it Anyway,” then you’ve enjoyed just a few of the many advantages of improvisation. But improvisation is much more than bawdy humor and quick wit. It mingles surety with sensitivity, intuition with innovation, the sensational with the subtle, and everywhere turns on confidence, creativity and camaraderie. And it just so happens you can get all of that right here in Beaumont.

Twice a month for the past six months a group of eclectic individuals—actors, students, engineers, librarians, retirees and more—have been gathering at the Betty Greenberg Center for the Performing Arts to take part in an Improv Workshop. Led by

local actor Tyler Williams (see him in Beaumont Community Player’s upcoming production of “Arsenic and Old Lace”), the two-and-half-hour workshop aims to embolden people of all ages and levels of experience to act with one another in an honest, encouraging and respectful environment.

Each workshop targets a different aspect of the improvisational process—character development, scene starting, acting and reacting, trust—through imaginative, often hilarious games and exercises that challenge participants to work together to create scenes, invent characters and craft stories, all without any preparation or practice.

Everyone is welcome. The Improv Workshop is always held at the Betty Greenberg Center for the

Performing Arts at 4155 Laurel Ave. in Beaumont.

For $10 (cash or check only) participants can expect an inspiring and entertaining evening honing a skill that goes far beyond the stage.

sneak peek april All the World’s a Stage… …at least it seems that way in April when you can choose from a variety of productions all over Southeast Texas including two kiddo shows at the Lutcher Theater for the Performing Arts – “Imaginocean” on April 2 and “Dr. Kaboom” on April 10. Beginning on April 10 and running through April 25 Beaumont Community Players presents “Circle Mirror Transformation.” Lamar University will “Spring into Dance” on April 10 and 11 as well as present three Opera Theatres on April 17, 18 and 19, and “The Last Night of Ballyhoo,” opening April 30.

Beaumont Ballet Theatre performs its annual “Cinderella, The Ballet” on April 17 and Port Arthur Little Theatre is presenting “On Golden Pond” April 17-26.

Spring Song No doubt there will be some local entertainment and song at First Thursdays on Calder on April 2 but also the Symphony of Southeast Texas will “Rach On” at the Julie Rogers on April 11. Lamar musicians invite the public to the Industrial Carillon at MobilOil Federal Credit Union on April 27 and a concert in the park on the grounds of the LU Plummer Building on April 12.

Run for Color On April 4 at the Event Centre in downtown The Color Vibe is back, one of most colorful events of the year.

Beyond Benefit Southeast Texas nonprofits are hosting amazing events for fun and fund raising. On April 9 the Texas Energy Museum welcomes Benjamin Carson as the speaker of its Blowout 2015. The force is with the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” for the party of the light-year, Champagne & Ribs on April 16. Christus Foundation will host its 35th Annual Gala on April 18 and Harbor Hospice its Sixth Annual Butterfly Release on April 25. Justice is Served for CASA on April 21 and the Stars of the ARC are the fashionable celebrities on April 24 at the annual Style Show and Dinner. Play golf for good causes on April 10 in the Miracle Match for Life at Brentwood Country Club or in LobsterFest at Bayou Din with the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce.

Hilarity Ensues Chris Tucker entertains at Ford Park on April 11 and Ron White at the Julie Rogers on April 23.

Fair Festival The final days of the South Texas State Fair, April 1-5, usher in festival season with Carnival Des Cajun at the Port Arthur Pavilion April 11 and 12, followed by the Neches River Festival with a parade on April 18 and coronation on April 25. John Paul Davis- Judge and Practical Jokester

By Scott Renick As I am writing this column, I am aware that the one-year anniversary of the death of my friend, Judge John Paul Davis, is fast approaching.

The public knew him as a legal fixture in Jefferson County, but for me, my first thoughts of him will always be- Judge Davis- practical jokester.

While working as a prosecutor in Bexar County, I accepted a job at the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. At that time, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office was not fun. It was an election year. Everyone was tense- the prosecutors and the judges. There was much yelling. I assumed Jefferson County would be similar.

On my first day as a prosecutor in Jefferson County, I learned I was assigned to County Court No. 3, and the judge- who I had never met and knew nothing about- wanted to meet me. I had no idea what to expect.

Late on a Friday afternoon, I walked into Judge Davis’ chambers. Judge informed me that he would be gone for the next week, so this was an ideal time to start in his court. In an attempt to make small talk, I asked if he

was leaving for business or pleasure. The Judge informed me that he was leaving for “business,” and he also served as a judge for the World Court in the Netherlands. I was in awe.

After the conversation ended, I called my father to inform him that I had been assigned to a judge who also worked with the World Court. My father was so excited at what I could learn from this man. Now, I had nine days to prepare to prove my worth to Judge Davis. I worked feverishly and throughout the weekend.

On the day of Judge Davis’ return, I arrived to court 45 minutes early, so I could go over the cases for the day with him. In anticipation of this meeting, I prepared a color-coded docket sheet with an index to explain the status of each case. As I walked into his chambers, I said, “Judge, how was your trip to the Netherlands?” He looked at me perplexed and said “Netherlands?” Now, I was confused- “Yes, sir, your trip to do work at the World Court.” Quickly, clarity came across his face. Judge Davis said, “Oh, yes, yes, yes. That’s right the World Court.” There was a pause. With some hesitation, I asked, “Judge, were you playing a joke on me?” He responded- “Oh, of course not,... no... <grinning>... yes.” Shocked- I blurted out- “I called my father!” There was an awkward pause, and then we both started laughing.

This was just the beginning of several practical jokes at my expense over the next year. On occasion, he would have someone call my office and tell me another prosecutor had been held in contempt of court, and if I did not intervene, nothing could be done to stop him from going to jail. On another occasion, he had a female defense attorney- who I admired- threaten to fight me if I did not lower my plea offer on a case.

prosecutors. He was known for his wit while speaking to defendants in open court. Occasionally, Judge Davis would say something humorous in open court, and we would keep a list of his best one-liners- these were known as “Davisisms.” I have two favorites.

A college student was charged with theft, and he had to appear in front of Judge Davis. Judge Davis asked if his major was “theftology.” The young man said “no.” Judge Davis responded, “Good. Clearly, this is not a line of work that you would be very good at.”

On another day, during a jail run docket, all of the defendants are brought from the jail in shackles. The male and female defendants are separated. On this day, there was only a single female defendant and 20 or more male defendants. The female defendant came to the bench before Judge Davis. Judge noticed that this young woman had quite an extensive criminal history. He said, “Young lady, if you do not change your ways, how do expect to find a suitable husband? I bet none of these men would want to marry you?” This lady glanced over the men all chained together and said, ”Judge, with all due respect, I do not believe that I would want to marry any of these men.”

Then, a random prisoner in the back raised his hand and said, “I’ll marry you.” The courtroom erupted in laughter. Judge Davis smiled and said, “I think we should all forget this line of questioning.”

A week before Judge Davis passed, we saw each other at the courthouse, and we shared a cup of coffee in his chambers. We laughed at these stories and many others. He asked me to tell these stories at his retirement party. Unfortunately, he never made it to that party, but every time I think of him, I smile and remember the joy I had serving in his court. As a lawyer, that was the most enjoyable time of my career.
