Dripping Springs offers plenty of unique places to stay One of the best things about Dripping Springs is the surprising diversity of places to stay. From the 57-room Sleep Inn & Suites to the Deer Run Bed and Breakfast, which has a max capacity of eight, there is a litany of options for any size of group or style. Each place to stay has a unique feel, from the quiet and serenity of the hill country, to the history of the community. The friendly atmosphere can make you feel right at home. Hill Country Casitas is one of the newest additions to the local lodging industry, as it opened in the fall of 2016. There are 10 casitas, or small cabins, that can be rented, and they are lightly modeled after an old Mexican farmhouse with modern features. Situated on sloping hills, the views go on for miles. “We are on 13 acres,” Mary McRoberts, owner of Hill Country Casitas said. “It’s very quiet. That is a blessing. It’s beautiful, and the views are just amazing. They go on for miles and miles. The stars at night are breathtaking. It is absolutely relaxing, serene and beautiful.” Another bonus is the fact that Hill County Casitas are located directly across the street from Hawk’s Shadow Winery, allowing for a fun time just a stroll away. But not all lodging facilities in Dripping Springs are new. In fact, some are as old as the town itself. The Homestead at the Dripping Springs was originally built in 1854, and the springs on the property are credited with giving the town its name. “We’ve kept the old original house intact,” Charlie Haydon, owner of Homestead, said. “It has had practically no changes in the 150

years it’s been here. We’ve stabilized it and put in new plumbing, electrical and A/C.” Over the years, the home has served in many capacities including as a stagecoach VWRS DQG WKH RULJLQDO SRVW RIÀ FH IRU WKH town. The home helps visitors connect to the small-town feel of Dripping Springs. That feel is only enhanced by the friendly nature of the community. Take Amici Bed and Breakfast for example. The six-room facility surrounds a
large family area, which makes for a perfect place to gather for friends. “It’s basically our home, and we like people to feel at home,” Ruben Contreras, owner of Amici, said. “Amici means friends in Italian, and we want people to feel that they have friends in the Hill Country as we have friends from all over the world.” Beyond becoming friends with the owners, locals or other guests, there are even more options at Amici. There are two donkeys, Cinderella and Snow White, which
roam the property with four free-range roosters and nine hens. “I think that Dripping Springs has the two best ingredients,” Contreras said. “One is the people. The people of Texas are wonderful, and Dripping Springs has a family community. It is very friendly and family oriented. They really treat you like a family. It doesn’t matter where you come from. Then, there is also the Hill Country. It’s beautiful. There are lots of water features. The landscape is wonderful.”

Epicure Executive Chef Julio Llop and Wine Curator Jerry Gray have put a gourmet twist on comfort food in Dripping Springs. Epicurean is a Greek word for a student of the philosopher Epicurus or love of luxurious taste and luxurious tastes are abundant at Epicure. Artisanal cheeses and select wines are imported internationally and fresh, regionally-grown produce is shipped in daily to the small European style bistro. All dressings and even the pickles on the chacuterie boards and artisanal sandwiches are made in house. One small freezer on the premises is only there to hold house-made ice creams. Epicure’s cuisine takes comfort food classics and puts a decadent twist on them, serving up dishes like a four-cheese macaroni, cheese with fried shallots, French thyme or roasted carrots with smoked paprika, honey and chevre. Gray said they are less about white table cloths and etiquette as they are about celebrating great tastes. “We don’t perceive ourselves at all as D À QH GLQLQJ H[SHULHQFH :H ZDQWHG a place that was casual and fun and provided people with great wine, great food and great service,” Gray said. “We’re all about comfort food with a global twist.” Epicure is the new kid on the block in Dripping Springs but Jerry Gray, the wine curator, is anything but new. He has more than 27 years of experience in tasting and pairing wines from around the world. Gray said he wants to provide somewhere where people can enjoy wine without having to be a connoisseur. “You don’t have to worry about what your knowledge of wine is 12

or isn’t,” Gray said. “To me there should only be one thing you’re worried about with wine and that is what you like.” Gray hand picks every wine featured in the restaurant; he looks for wines that are not only exemplary for their region and grape, but also for what the stories are behind them. He is particularly fond of a Bordeaux blend named Purple Heart, because a Vietnam veteran
who donates a percentage of each bottle to a foundation that supports critically-injured veterans makes it. Epicure’s hours are Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Epicure is nestled away in a shopping center located off of Highway 290 at 1025 Cannon Drive Suite 105.
Make sure to stop by for Happy Hour, Monday to Wednesday 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., to hopefully taste test potential new menu items. The shrimp ceviche and the corn and bacon beignets with a honey drizzle and sweet peppers have migrated from Happy Hour to the regular menu from the review of Happy Hour customers.

Fine wine in the

Ame Brewster, director of operations for Fall Creek Vineyards in Driftwood, said. According to local experts, the Dripping Springs area has great terroir. “What we have found is that some of the best soils in Texas, as good as anywhere in the world, are here in this Onion Creek Valley,â€? Ed Auler, owner of Fall Creek, said. “The soils in the Salt Lick Vineyards (directly across the street from Fall Creek) are producing grapes that are making wines that are getting awards in international competition. ‌ :KDW ZH DUH Ă€ QGLQJ LV WUXO\ ZRUOG FODVV wines are coming out of these soils.â€? Ed Auler should know. He and Fall Creek Vineyards were pioneers in the Texas Hill Country wine scene. In the 1970s, Fall Creek opened in 7RZ 7H[DV DV RQH RI WKH Ă€ UVW ZLQHULHV in the state. Ed was instrumental in creating the Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area, which is a wine grapegrowing region in the United States distinguishable by geographic features. In just this year alone, Fall Creek’s 2014 GSM Salt Lick Vineyard wine was awarded a double gold medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition, one of the most prestigious competitions in the world. Three other Fall Creek Wines received gold and silver medals at the competition. In the International Wine Competition at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Fall Creek took home the Top Texas Winery award. While the main Fall Creek Winery is still in Tow, the new tasting room in Driftwood, just outside of Dripping Springs, is a treat to see. With newly planted vineyards beginning to take over the landscape, the view from the back porch is incredible. “We have a gorgeous property,” Brewster said. “They purchased a home and converted into a tasting hall. So it has an elegant and cozy environment. It feels like you are drinking wine in your own perfect home, and you have the opportunity to do that over looking vineyards and the Texas Hill Country. BY RACHEL WILLIS Off of Highway 290, down Fitzhugh Road, past Jester King Brewery, sits Last Stand Brewing Company, a little tucked-away slice of Texas. Last Stand Brewing Company is a small beer-brewing operation hosted out of two big barns and one cozy beer garden. Kerry and Mandi Richardson opened this rather recent addition to the stretch of Fitzhugh Road, affectionately called “Libations Alley,” in February 2015. They took their home-brewing operation and started a business with it. But home is still a very big part of their business, according to Mandi Richardson. “Opening a brewery is a labor of love,” Mandi said. “There’s ups and downs with running your own brewery, but you pour your heart into it and I think that shows in our beers.” “Labor of love,” seems a suitable phrase to describe the brewery; almost every chair, table and even the taproom’s bar was handmade by the Richardson family. All the beer that is poured from their taps is served by the hands that made it. The taproom has a rather eclectic blend of beer styles. Their Belgian Pale Ale, Simcoe Pale Ale, IPA and Coffee Porter are the mainstays you can drink year round. They have four rotating taps that change seasonally with personalized experimental batches that the team collaborates throughout the year. “We’re always talking about new flavors we would like to try and how to work those into the schedule,” Kerry Richardson said. “It’s a very collaborative process.” Mandi Richardson keeps a regular stream of food trucks rolling through on Saturdays and Sundays, serving up a range of food from South American ceviche to Hill Country barbeque. They also sell roasted peanuts in brown paper bags for $2 and outside food is always welcome. The taproom and beer garden are open Friday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Come out for “Chicken S**t Sunday”, a tradition brought back from Belize that happens every third Sunday of the month. Guests can place small bets on 18

Hamilton Pool is known nationwide for its epic scenery that creates one of the most unique parks
Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve consists of 232 acres of protected natural habitat. It features a beautiful swimming area that is a place of wonder and is renowned throughout the Hill Country. It’s even been featured in national magazines. Thousands of years ago, the dome of an underground river collapsed and, luckily for us, created a huge natural waterfall. The variety of trees, rocks and plants give us an idea of what the area looked like when that happened. Today, residents of the area love to swim in the pool, and when the weather’s cooler, visit to photograph and experience nature in its pristine state. The summer of 2016 saw a lot of rain, but the extra rain made the waterfall even more magical. The 45-foot waterfall is the centerpiece of the preserve with three different hiking trails, ranging from half a mile to 1.5 miles long. The parking lot can only accommodate 75 cars, and there are limited facilities at the entrance. Picnic tables are also near the parking area. Hamilton Pool can be reached at (512) 264-2740 to check if swimming is allowed. The park is cash only with no pets allowed. Reservations are required in certain months. The open air, hikes, camping and swimming, this is Texas at its best. Bring and ride your horse, too. Miles away from civilization, there are campgrounds with a primitive camp six or so miles from your car. The Pedernales River offers recharge time, a chance to wake up in the morning and know that the only noises you’ll hear all day are the sounds of nature. The sounds of the falls, birds, the river rushing past, all just 18 miles from Dripping Springs. It’s a great trip for an afternoon swim and picnic, but it’s even nicer to stay in one of their 69 campsites with electricity and water, and nearby showers and restrooms. The primitive site has chemical toilets. But the hike is worth it for an old corral, different varieties of cactus, natural springs and best of all, sleeping under the stars at night, that are big and bright. You’re deep in the heart of Texas! The horse and mountain bike trails are each ten miles and not for beginners as it can get rocky at times, but an awful lot of fun. The hiking trails include the half-mile Twin Falls Trail, or the six-mile Wolf Mountain Trail. Mescal and Tobacco creeks crisscross the hikes so there are always cool spots along the trails. And then there is the Pedernales River. Tubing, swimming, ÀVKLQJ QRWKLQJ EHDWV LW RQ D KRW GD\ -XVW VLWWLQJ LQ WKH ZDWHU à RDWLQJ RQ D WXEH WDNLQJ D GHHS EUHDWK DQG HQMR\LQJ OLIH Most of the time, the river is placid and calm, but it can rise to a torrent in a short period of time. Depending on the weather, it is best to call to check on conditions as the river can rise quickly. The park is located at 2585 Park Road 2026, which is about 20 minutes west of Dripping Springs. A day trip to Reimer’s Ranch is a day of outdoor fun. The park closes at twilight, so it is not a camping spot. Guided tours run from October to April. There are also birding tours with many colorful migratory birds like the golden-cheeked warbler, which is regularly spotted. The park is open from 7 a.m. to twilight. Fees are $10 per vehicle. Vehicles with a senior citizen (62 years or older) or a disabled vet (60 percent disabled) are not charged. No credit cards are accepted. Pets are allowed, but they must remain on leash at all times. When you go to Westcave Preserve, be sure to wear your hiking shoes and be prepared to see the wonder of nature. Pristine and natural are the words that could closest describe the preserve’s natural state and the beauty found there. The park is run by the partnership of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and Westcave Preserve. Westcave got its name from early settlers who called it West Caves, because the caves were west of the Pedernales River. A 125 ft. hike down to the bottom of the canyon will reward you with lower temperatures and dense tropical foliage at the entrance to the cave, and all this is just a few miles from Dripping Springs. Westcave was a place that thrilled the early pioneers, and it still can be seen exactly as they set eyes on it. The preserve is also an educational and research facility. The cave is studied because of its constant temperature of about 70 degrees. The preserve provides data on Central Texas’ drought history. The preserve can be seen by guided tour in order to learn about the cave and to have the area be natural with DV OLWWOH HQYLURQPHQWDO LPSDFW DV SRVVLEOH :HHNGD\ ÀHOG trips and group tours are available and encouraged. Natasha and Chad Hudson are two artists that joined their Texas and Tennessee roots and opened Hudson’s on Mercer in October 2015. The state-of-the art venue features a recording studio and Ă€ YH PXVLF OHVVRQ URRPV LQ WKH EDFN <RX FDQ KHDU PXVLF GD\ RU night here, but during the day the musicians may be eight years old and practicing. The talent that comes from Hudson’s is nothing to sneeze at. Mary Margaret Dement, from the Kyle Sisters of Texas fame, teaches vocals, and Carl Weathersby, a Chicago blues style guitarist and vocalists that has played with the likes of Albert King and Billy Branch, headlines Hudson’s every Wednesday night. “Carl is a part of the era of blues players that started it,â€? Chad Hudson said. “Albert King is the reason Stevie Ray Vaughan played the way he did, and Carl played with Albert King for four years on the same stage every night. You’re talking about that kind of legacy right here in Dripping Springs.â€? Hudson’s is doing more then hosting local acts – they are growing local talent. Chad and Natasha wanted the venue to be a musical hub for the community where families could pack in to hear live music together. “We want kids to be able to look and see the lights on the stage and we allow all ages in so kids can come in with their parents and enjoy live music,â€? Chad Hudson said. “We have the ability with this place to have a positive impact in arts.â€? Across the street, Mercer Street Dance Hall is an authentic Texas dance hall. Hill Country Guitars has top-notch instruments and the clientele to prove it BY GARY ZUPANCIC The long-time running joke at guitar shops around the country is don’t play Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. The beautiful introduction to the song is a must-learn for any aspiring guitarist to the point that it has almost become clichÊ. That idea changes, though, when Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant looks in the window, as he did at Hill Country Guitars on Mercer Street. Employee Kevin Jones played a Led Zeppelin tune on his mandolin trying to lure him in, but to no avail. Plant didn’t come in. It was worth a shot. One of the best things about Mercer Street is peering in the windows, as Plant did, to see what wonders are in store. The music shop moved to Mercer Street in May of 2016. In 'ULSSLQJ 6SULQJV WKH\ KDYH IRXQG WKH H[DFW ORFDWLRQ WKDW À WV WKHLU business and they exemplify the small-town charm of the Gateway to the Hill Country. Les Paul, which sells for about $225,000. It is simply an amazing place to window shop and admire the craftsmanship that went into the beautiful instruments. The wall of guitars, with more than 300 on display, is something worth staring at. The shop features guitars like Collings, which are made just seven miles down the road. They also carry other highend brands like Huss and Dalton, Bourgeois, Larrivee. “We decided to come to this up-and-coming area and now our customers come to us as opposed to Austin,” Randy Nyerges, co-owner with Dwain Cornelius, said. “There are a lot of musically inclined people out here, upper-echelon musicians, that are moving and growing here.” Hill Country Guitars has obviously found a famous niche. Some of their customers include masters of the guitar like Joe Walsh, Jimmie Vaughan, Ry Cooder, John Sebastian and Billy Gibbons. A few of the guitars have custom paint jobs by Darren Wenzel, of Gasoline Art, noted for his custom car graphics. Hill Country Guitars also sells mandolins, upright basses and ukuleles. They will even sell high-end guitars RQ FRQVLJQPHQW RU ZLOO WUDGH LI WKH JXLWDU ZLOO ÀW WKHLU business. They buy guitar collections and individual guitars, such as old Fender, Gibson, Telecaster and Stratocaster. They also have strings and accessories. Once a year, historic downtown Dripping Springs lends its popular venues to the Songwriters Festival, transforming the area into a diverse but intimate showcase of talented musicians from all over the world to bring attention to the core of music – the songwriting itself. The festival will be held Oct. 14 to 16 and offers free shows throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The headliner, twotime Grammy winner Rodney Crowell, will play at Mercer Street Dance Hall on Saturday, October 15 to a sold-out audience. “The goal of our festival has always been to introduce incredibly talented songwriters to people who probably wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to ever see them perform,” Laurie Halfpenny, festival committee member, said. “The songwriters who play the festival gain new friends and fans, and the audience gets to experience all genres of music and hear their stories in very intimate settings.” Chad Hudson, festival performer and venue owner, said the experience of the festival is nothing short of amazing. “Seeing and listening to these talented and humble artists get up there and tell us

BY DALTON SWEAT Sitting outside under a dark sky and looking up at the stars creates an unexplainable feeling. It’s a feeling that not everybody gets a chance to discover, and that is why Dripping Springs has taken steps to protect it. “It’s very calming and awe-inspiring,” Cindy Luongo Cassidy, with International Dark Sky Association Texas, said. “About 80 percent of the population lives in a place where they can’t see the Milky Way. Many have never seen the Milky Way; they have never ventured far enough away.” As a community that truly appreciates the night sky, the City of Dripping 6SULQJV EHFDPH WKH ÀUVW FRPPXQLW\ LQ Texas – and sixth in the world – to receive the International Dark-Sky Community designation in 2014. The city has been recognized for its efforts to adopt lighting standards that reduce light pollution within the city limits and its vast extraterritorial jurisdiction. For its efforts in preventing light pollution and protecting the night sky, the designation has brought with it the Texas Night Sky Festival. In March, thousands of people will ÁRFN WR 'ULSSLQJ 6SULQJV IRU DQ HYHQW DV spectacular as the stars.
“It’s an appreciation of the night sky and the wonder of it,” Luongo said. “It’s your connection to the universe.” There are activities for the young and old. Last year, Native Americans from the Lakota tribe told their stories of the constellations and the night sky that have been passed down from generation to generation. The festival will also feature live presentations, education, science and arts displays, solar observations, a mobile planetarium, demonstrations of glarereducing lighting and tasty food. For those who want to try and get the most out of the experience, there is a badge program to encourage patrons to visit all the different stations offered. Sharon Goss, with the Dripping Springs Lions Club, said. “It’s got that hometown feel with great shopping to get you in the holiday spirit.â€? The Lions Club and the city of Dripping Springs host the free event. Mercer Street is

Not only is there a stage with live music and performances from local artists and dance studios, there is a petting zoo, trackless train rides, pony rides and, perhaps best of all, Santa. Santa’s Workshop is set up for children to
have a one-on-one experience to make sure they can request all the toys they want for Christmas. It’s also a great chance to take a free photo with Mr. Claus. The event starts at 10 a.m., but it really lights up at dusk. A lot has happened in the Texas Hill Country wine scene since Dripping With Taste Wine and Food Festival started nearly 10 years ago. The interesting part is that much of the growth that the industry has seen has happened in Dripping Springs itself. “The wine industry was just starting around here, and this was a way to showcase the wines that are happening in our Dripping Springs and Driftwood areas,â€? Pam Owens, Director of Tourism for the Dripping Springs Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, said. Since then, Texas pioneer winemaker Fall Creek has moved into the area, and new wineries like Hawk’s Shadow and Salt Lick Vineyards have opened up. Others have followed. This has only enhanced the festival itself. In 2016, there were 25 wineries showcased at Dripping With Taste. “Not only are we getting the big boys like Becker and Fall Creek, but we are getting the boutique wineries that everybody is craving,â€? Owens said. As of last year, rum, vodka, gin and even a little whiskey joined the party, many of which are made right in Dripping Springs. But, the fun doesn’t stop at the tasting. The festival also includes cooking demonstrations, drink mixology classes, live music, specialty vendors, a free photo booth and actual grape stomping. What started out as a wine festival has now grown into a well-rounded affair with life’s indulgences. The addition of food vendors has added an upscale angle that teaches patrons how to pair the proper foods with wine. Dripping Springs has also seen an emergence of breweries and distilleries, which are now included in the event making the festival the largest assortment of Texas wines, craft beers, gourmet foods and spirits available under one roof. “This isn’t your typical, snooty, wear a tie, spit out good booze festival. It is a true celebration of the 7H[DV +LOO &RXQWU\ DQG WKH Ă DYRU RI 7H[DV Âľ VD\V nine-year festival attendee, Stephanie Holtzendorf. The annual festival is held the second Saturday in September.
