2016 Happy festival-goers will soon return to Dripping Springs for the community’s annual hometown event and springtime celebration. The 29th Annual Founders Day Festival will be held April 22 – 24th as thousands of people converge on Dripping Springs’ historic downtown district for a festive celebration of heritage and pioneer spirit.

The Annual Founders Day Festival honors the founding of Dripping Springs in 1850 by the Moss, Wallace, and Pound families and celebrates the tremendous spirit of volunteerism that still exists in the community today.

Hosted by the City of Dripping Springs, Dripping Springs Lions Club,

and the Founders Day Commission, which represents various community organizations, the proceeds from the weekend of live music, savory foods, and good old-fashioned fun directly benefit local non-profit organizations, churches, school and park programs, youth groups, and charities.

With a theme of Destination Drippin’, the festival will kick off on Friday evening, April 22nd at 6:30 p.m., with a grand parade of 75 floats or entries.

Bring a lawn chair and come early to find the perfect spot to view the impressive procession as it meanders through downtown Dripping Springs.

The event will continue all weekend long with free live music and entertainment, street dances, the Mighty Thomas Carnival for kids, cook-off competitions, more than 150 arts and crafts vendors and business booths, tasty BBQ, and traditional fair food. In addition, many non-profit and charitable organizations will be represented.

Brief History of

Dripping Springs It’s easy to imagine why the first families settled here; with scenic views of rolling hills and trees for building, clear bottom creeks of spring-fed water, and an abundance of wildlife.

It was about eight years after Texas became a part of the United States, in the early 1850’s, when three families trekked from Mississippi to arrive atop Wallace Mountain-- the place they would call home.

They named their new home Dripping Springs, after water dripping off the limestone ledges of the Milkhouse branch of the Edwards Aquifer; a place that had long been a gathering spot for the Tonkawa Indians.

The “Old Three” were credited for much of communities original settlement. Those three families included: John and Malvina Wallace, Dr. Joseph and Sarah Pound, and John and Indiana Moss (Sarah’s sister).

Moss purchased about 1,100 acres in the northwest quarter of the P.A. Smith Survey, Wallace purchased 377 acres in the northeast quarter.

Dr. Pound bought acreage near Henly. In December 1854 Dr. Pound sold his land and purchased 700 acres north of the Wallace property.

building is the dogtrot cabin of the “Pound House,” built in 1854.

Generations of the Pound family occupied the farmstead until 1983 and many of the descendants still live in the area. Today, the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead is an operating museum that is open to the community for educational tours and pioneer activities.

The City of Dripping Springs was not incorporated until April 1981 and was a response to fears of annexation into Austin’s extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ). Dripping Springs has a large ETJ, encompassing a majority of the northwestern half of Hays County.

The Dripping Springs area has become one of the fastest growing areas in Texas and remains a city steeped in community, education, and good old-fashioned Texas heritage.

Burrell Marshall purchased the original Moss property on January 19, 1870. Marshall passed away February 28, 1872, leaving the property to his wife, Martha Ann, and their five children. Within a year of the death of her husband Martha married William Thomas Chapman. Nine years later Chapman donated some of the land to build the Dripping Springs Academy a private boarding school. In 1905 it became a public school.

Chapman designed the layout of the town south of the Academy, thus making him the true founder The original land plat laid of Dripping Springs. The plat was out by Chapman made up 200 by 300 foot blocks which were divided into 50 by 100 foot lots. Mercer Street was named after Chapman’s son and remains the main street of Dripping Springs.

Like shadows of a past time, several of the structures from this rich pioneer heritage still stand in Dripping Springs. The oldest existing

“I love art, I love people, and I will fill my world with both until the day I die,” says local artist Mara Cardwell who has been a Dripping Springs resident since 1989.

Mara’s Art Gallery was the first and only art gallery in Dripping Springs back in 2004.

It was through Mara’s gallery that she met local artist and graphic designer Susan Manzello.

Together, the two formed Artists Alliance of the Hill Country (AAHC) in 2013 and has since sparked a creative fire that has spread through Dripping Springs and the surrounding cities.

Mara originally founded the Artists of Dripping Springs in 2005 and recruited Susan to be the marketing chair with the mission to encourage local artists to share, learn, and create. After Mara’s spinal cord surgery, she had to close her beloved gallery and give her art group leadership to another member so she could focus on recovery. The Artists of Dripping Springs group faded over time. Though seeing a void through the years, many local artists strongly nudged Susan and Mara to put together another group.

This time they expanded the membership region to foster artistic growth and collaboration across the Hill Country and held their first meeting in January 2013. AAHC currently has about 80 members with more than 50% residing outside of Dripping Springs.

“We have our annual goals, but the constant goal is to keep art awareness in all communities,” says Mara.

Today, AAHC encourages artists to work together to contribute to and promote their community, as well as their talents. Membership is available to all creative types, along with art lovers and supporters in Dripping Springs and the surrounding cities.

They are growing and leaving a strong creative impact on the communities around them.

The informal monthly gatherings include educational presentations, creative demonstrations, field trips, and an instant gallery where members can bring in their pieces to show and take questions from others.

The group also holds juried art shows and studio tours.

“We keep our gatherings fun, and the artists keep coming back,” says Mara.

Members of AAHC have worked with The City of Dripping Springs to offer creative insight for the revitalization of Mercer Street and help source the right local artists for the public art plan. Additionally, they have joined forces with the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce to bring more of an art element to community events.

“We always look into ways that we can infuse art into our community.

It is a beautiful relationship if you can create that exchange of support and inspiration,” says Susan.

This year will mark the third annual AAHC Tour the Talent Art Studio Tour. Artists will open their studios and works to the public. Last year, there were 250 attendees, and this year a higher turnout is expected.

“I am excited, happy and pumped that we have such a great group of artists come together,” said Mara.

Mara and Susan plan to pass the torch and train the next generation of volunteers into leadership positions in such a way that they can relinquish their roles in the organization, serve as consultants, and ensure the future success of the Artists Alliance of the Hill Country.

Shelter of Central Texas Written by Misty Dean

Tucker is known for his love of animals, people, and his community. On any given day he will visit an area school or day care to promote responsible pet ownership and animal safety. Other days he makes rounds at local nursing homes and hospitals to offer his support and companionship to those who could use a smile or lift in spirit.

Tucker, a former shelter dog, is now an Ambassadog at PAWS Shelter of Central Texas and participates in the Visiting Pet Program with his partner, Executive Director Melody Hilburn. This is one of the many services offered by the nonprofit shelter in an effort to save lives and change lives. The no-kill shelter, provides care and love to homeless, abandoned, and abused animals for however long it takes to find them a loving home.

More than a shelter, PAWS efforts include: working with other shelters for overcrowding and placement; holding off-site adoptions to get the animals out into the community; fully vaccinating, microchipping, and tending to their medical needs; Behavior Testing allowing a better home environment match before adoption; spaying or neutering to help pet overpopulation issues; educating the community on responsible pet ownership; and recruiting volunteers and fosters.

To help support the shelter’s mission, Wilson Appliance in Dripping Springs has teamed up with PAWS for their 13th annual “Dinner by the Bite” fund-raising event. The dinner is open to the public at 6:30 p.m. May 5 when supporters will have a chance to participate in a silent auction and mingle while enjoying food, wines and craft cocktails. Local Chef ’s from Freda’s Kitchen and Epicure Gourmet Kitchen will demonstrate different cooking techniques using customized equipment and serve guests savory bite-sized appetizers and entrees, along with a desert option throughout the evening. Craft Cocktails will be a selection of ciders from Argus Cidery, with wine sponsored

by Hawk’s Shadow, and Beer by Last Stand Brewing Company. Tickets are $60 for early birds and are available at http:// pawsshelter.org/dinner-by-the-bite/.

Melody says they are delighted that Wilson’s has been hosting the PAWS dinner for so long. She says the fund-raiser usually brings in about 15,000-$20,000 annually from the ticket sales and the silent auction.

PAWS is celebrating 30 years supporting Central Texas and since has outgrown its facility due to the area’s growth in human and animal populations. Future plans for the shelter include an expansion with a larger facility thanks to a supporter donating 39 acres off Highway 165 between Dripping Springs and Blanco. The shelter currently has 1.2 million but needs 1.4 to get the new facility going. The ultimate vision consists of a complete campus of services for abandoned and stray animals including in-house medical options, walking trails, a memorial garden, individual dog runs and training fields.

The expansion will also allow PAWS to provide more humananimal bonding programs such as Tucker’s Visiting Pet Program.
