It is absolutely relaxing, serene and beautiful. Another bonus is the fact that Hill County Casitas are located directly across the street from Hawk Shadow Winery allowing for a fun time just a stroll away.

our wonderful guests. Bella Nido is a comfortable romantic getaway, ideal for wedding nights, anniversaries and general Hill Country, winery, brewery, distillery, wild flower, BBQ, night sky, swimming hole, antique shopping, rodeo, dance hall, fine dining, laid back, Texas loving fun!
9LOOD 9LJQHWR Stop in at Villa Vigneto Texas, and you’ll certainly feel at home. The beautifully crafted bed and breakfast is a European style country house with stone floors, custom wood trim and a walking trail along three acres of property. “It looks like an Italian villa and feels like a small park with the heavily landscaped area in the back and 2.5 acres in the front,” Suzin Sciabarasi, owner of Villa Vigneto Texas, said. That park like feel is why Sciabarasi thinks that people
enjoy visiting Dripping Springs so much. “I think that Dripping Springs has a lot of space to really enjoy nature,” Sciabarasi said. “You don’t have to go far to find plenty of space and wildlife. It is a place where you can ride your bike down the road and see longhorns, roadrunners, rabbits and baby deer. The wildlife is proliferous. People who come from large cities have the access to Austin close by but within 30 minutes they are out with nature and they love that.”

EAT
A taste of the Hill Country,
with a little hint of olive A
s you ride down W. Fitzhugh from Ranch Road 12, curves, hills and valleys are with you for a bout 5 miles or so. Then you see the building, a reddish stone with a red clay tile roof. This is the Texas Hill Country Olive Company. Looking like right out of an Italian picture postcard, the building and olive orchard, situated on a hill, all to the Mediterranean feel of the surroundings. The rows of olive trees behind the building can’t be missed. They even sell olive trees at the back of the parking lot. It’s also a great place to eat lunch. Chef Michael Scott Anderson is shaking things up with a brand new menu that includes old Italian classics, such as oven roasted meatballs with marinara sauce and baked goat cheese with tomato sauce. “It’s basically a rustic Italian theme. Stuff that highlights our olive oils and balsamic vinegar.” Anderson said. “We also try new takes on old ideas, like kelp pesto, instead of regular pesto; or lemon oil in our
12

ricotta—to give it just a little bit of acid to cut through some of the fats.” “We also bake our breads in house. We do rosemary and sea salt focaccia bread, that we include with our salads; but you can really taste the difference in our pizzas because of the dough,” Anderson said. On the weekends Texas Hill Country Olive Company also offers scones and baked goods. If you’re shopping for your own kitchen, the variety of olive oil and balsamic vinegar offered in the shop area are sure to please. They’re there to be sampled, and taken home to accent your favorite cuisine. Some are award winners. The idea for the company started with John Gambini, his daughter Cara Gambini and his brother-in-law Rick Mensik. John wanted to build a vineyard and got the other two interested. But after doing research he found that growing olives would be a much better business, as the soil and climate was a match for Italy. There were already 160 vineyards in Texas.
“We are the 14th olive orchard in Texas and a pioneer in commercial operations here,” Cara said. Although they grow olives on their 17 acres, they also lease and harvest 10,000 tress in Asherton, in South Texas. They purchased the land in 2008 and in 2009 planted their first trees. There is always a danger of freezes and being on a hill the wind and sleet can damage or kill the olives. There really wasn’t any data on the how well the trees would survive. They did have a freeze but the trees came back. At first they sold their oil at farmers markets. “Back in the day we took out long-shot ads in Craigslist,” Cara said. Since Dripping Springs has grown, it has been easier. Last year they produced 36,000 bottles and hope to do 20 to 30% better this year. “In 2013 we really started to grow. In 2014, that was the year we were in the black for the first time…it was a positive year, 2015 was flat, but 2016 was a banner year.” The latest improvement has been to the Bistro’s menu. The Bistro’s use of olives and balsamic vinegars in their menu is savory. The flatbread pizza and their Panini are also very good; they’re drizzled with balsamic. Beer and wine are served. It is well worth the drive.

Treaty Oak founder Daniel Barnes is a former sommelier who named his company after the majestic 500 year old oak where, according to folklore, Texas founding father Stephen F. Austin signed a border agreement with local Native Americans. Barnes says he wanted the name to “symbolize the strength and longevityâ€? of his products. Barnes started by experimenting with 200 recipes of rum, and introduced his agship Treaty Oak Rum in 2007. Today, that spirit for exploring and creating new recipes in spirits continues to drive innovation of the various rums, vodkas, gin, bourbon whiskey and beer oered at Treaty Oak. While varied, they all share the common element of Barnes’ commitment to what he calls “quality, hand-crafted spirits.â€? “No matter what we make, two things are consistent: we meticulously select the best ingredients for our products, and we adhere to stringent distilling methods to ensure a high-quality ďŹ nished product. Our spirits are born of science and experience, created in custom-made pot and column stills with our own unique distillation process. We continually test new recipes and try new processes to create amazing spirits that we think
you’ll love,â€? An example of this care is the molasses used in Treaty Oak Rum. “Our Treaty Oak Rum is made with molasses sourced from the last sugar mill in Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. We brew rum beer made of molasses and yeast in an initial fermentation, and then distill it in our custom stills,â€? Barnes said. As evidence of this passion and commitment to quality, Treaty Oak earned the 2004 Distiller of the Year Award from MicroLiquor. And Barnes was selected among a ďŹ eld of more than 400 distinguished craft distillers in the U.S. In December of 2016, Treaty Oak added a brewery to the property. The company introduced three new year-round brews including the Fitzhugh Ale, namd after the road leading to the brewery, the Lil’ Hop Session IPA and the Bright Side Blonde Ale The 27-acre Treaty Oak Brewing & Distilling, just north of central Dripping Springs, is a popular destination for both locals and out-town-guests, oering food and beverages, a tasting room, and cocktail house.

A San Luis Spirits Company
Dripping
Springs Vodka, GIN & BOURBON Dripping Springs Vodka got its start in a small warehouse which, for the most part, only locals knew about. Two brothers, Kevin and Gary Kelleher, leased an abandoned church and built their first distillery. After waiting almost 18 months, their licensing finally came through and they were able to distribute their first case of Dripping Springs Vodka in 2007. The family business San Luis Spirits, which includes Kevin’s wife Susan, got off to a good start when it won Gold Best in Class, The Vodka Purity Trophy, at the 2008 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London. To this day, Dripping Springs Vodka remains the only American vodka to win the IWSC Purity Vodka Trophy in the competitions forty-seven year history. More recently, Dripping Springs Vodka won Gold at the IWSC’s 2015 Spirit of the Americas Competition. Since inception, the family has since added five additional products to their name, launching Dripping Springs Texas Orange Vodka in 2011, Well No. 1876 Vodka in 2012, Dripping Springs Artisan Gin in 2014, and Dripping Springs Traditional Gin in September 2016. The latest addition to their products is 1876 Bourbon. Just released in September, the 1876 Bourbon promises to be the same great quality as all the
other San Luis products. All five San Luis products are non-GMO corn based, making them naturally gluten-free. They are also Certified Kosher through the Houston Kashruth Association. Dripping Springs Vodka & Gin’s success can be attributed to the Kelleher family’s passion for creating true craft products. “Our whole mantra is to spend the time to make the best product possible as opposed to mass production,” said Kevin Kelleher, who oversees the distillery as CEO. And true craft it is. Small batches and quality water are the name of the game at Dripping Springs Vokda. Their products are distilled in small 40-to-50 gallon batches in proprietary copper pot stills designed specifically for the distillery. “When you add the unique profile of our artesian spring water to the mix, it really makes for an incredibly smooth vodka and gin profile that is just hard not to love,” said Marissa Wagner, Public Relations and Events Manager for the distillery. The distillery offers tours and tastings. Walkin tastings are available Monday thru Saturday

The new facility will offer craft vodka and gin cocktails and a large seating and game area to visitors 6 days a week. Songwriters Festival that occurs each October in Dripping Springs. Area visitors who enjoy unique and newly crafted beers would do well to visit Twisted X and sample their latest creations from their “brew crew,” many of which are only available in their tasting room.

There’s a new brewery on Mercer, but it’s by people who are not new to brewing or to Dripping Springs. Dave Neimeyer and John McIntosh, owners of the local beer bar Barber Shop, have opened a new brewery, Acopon Brewing Company, right next to their old establishment. “Acopon is an old English word for restorative, or elixir, or health tonic,” Neimeyer said. The focus of Acopon is English pub ale, which Neimeyer describes as, “lower in alcohol, they’re session able beers. Beers that you could have a few of while sitting around talking to your friends—as opposed to high alchohol beers.” Acopon always has 7 or 8 beers available for purchase at all times, but rotates through 15 different recipes at different times, so visitors can always have something new to look forward to. But of course, the core English pub ale is always available. Another distinction of Acopon is beers on cask. “We also have beers on cask, so that’s another thing that we do that’s unique. We re-ferment, cask condition the beer in a cask, and hand pump it out—So it’s just like you would find in an English pub in the old days,” Neimeyer said.

SHOP
Shopping Dripping Springs Local shop owners have made Dripping Springs a mix of eclectic boutiques, shops, and specialty stores, ranging from boho-chic clothing at Fresh Native, to eclectic clothing choices at Starrs on Mercer who describe themselves as a “small town department store.” Visitors can also shop locally made preserves and condiments at Canaan Farms, and in between you can take a coffee break at a number of locally owned coffee houses like Greater Goods Roasting Company.
F
resh Native, owned by local Cindy Frechette and her daughters, Dixie Frechette and Lillie Esperza, is a women’s clothing, furniture, gift and lifestyle boutique inspired by stylish and chic Texas women. “I’d describe ourselves as boho-chic; bohemian and comfortable, but still trendy and cute,” Dixie Frechette said. “We try to have a broad range of clothes for all ages,” Cindy Frechette said. “We want clothes that span generations, timeless fashion.” Its new location, on Old Fitzhugh Road, has a country house charm quality that invites guests to linger and explore the store. An old style couch by a sunny window and a dressing room adds to the ambiance. Starrs on Mercer is a boutique owned by the Starrs sisters, Sarah and Melissa. These two women with a sense of fashion had a dream to open a shop like the department stores they grew up with. The “sisters” grew up in Pleasanton, south of San Antonio, where there were only two department stores in town. They were places where you bought everything from wedding gifts to baby gifts, birthday, anniversary. You name it, and it was there. “You could buy a $30 dress or a $300 dress there,” 20
2017 DRIPPING SPRINGS VISITOR’S GUIDE
says Sarah. Melissa adds, “We cater to a teacher’s salary or a lawyer’s salary.” Their store is the old Goslin family building that was built in 1941. At one time it had a soda fountain, grill and pharmacy. A meat market and building addition were later added in the ‘50s. Then in the ‘70s and ‘80s it became an insurance office, cloth shop, the Bassett Machine Shop, and then empty. The sisters have totally reconditioned the building, adding a new HVAC, electrical wiring, and “everything was remodeled but the historical building is intact. It has a 1940’s feel to it,” says Melissa. Once inside, it does give you

a feeling of stepping back in time. They offer a gift buying service, where for anniversaries or birthdays, men can register their important dates, name an amount and the client will be given a few choices for their price range. They also offer a shopping service for everybody. Starr’s on Mercer not only has fashions for ladies and girls, but Rowdy Gentleman and Southern Marsh for men and teens. When it comes to outstanding preserves and condiments, few can equal New Canaan Farms, located just west of downtown Dripping Springs on U.S. Highway 290. “Since 1979, we’ve been offering unique products for your table using the freshest, top quality, natural ingredients,” founder and owner Cindy Figer said. “Our team includes really talented people who create our outstanding preserves and condiments, and also dream up ways to use them in recipes that can make your reputation as a cook.” New Canaan’s store displays all of its varied foods in a beautiful shop that is sure to inspire you with gift giving ideas, as well as ideas for your own table.
In between the days shopping, visitors can stop for a cup of coffee to refresh and plan their next store visit. Greater Goods Roasting Company on McGregor Lane, just west of downtown Dripping Springs, is not just a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee, but also a great way to support many good causes. When husband and wife Trey Cobb and Khanh Trang decided to start a coffee roasting business, they decided that a part of the proceeds would always support worthy non-profits such as Austin Pets Alive, Boys and Girls Clubs, Central Texas Food Bank, and the Autism Society among others. They import raw coffee beans from around the world, and then roast them in Dripping Springs to produce a top-tier cup of coffee. But their focus on a quality product goes above-andbeyond what is normally offered. “We all help improve life. And our coffees supports a cause,” Trang said. So for the perfect relaxed day of shopping and adventure of finding unique items, come to Dripping Springs.

MUSIC
Dripping Springs means music EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK
I
f you’re visiting Dripping Springs, one thing you can be sure of is that there will be some sort of music venue on the day of your visit. “We’re unusual in the sense that we have live music going on every day of the week,” Visitors Bureau President Pam Owens said. “Somewhere on Mercer Street, or nearby, someone will be on stage.” On the north side of Mercer, sits Mercer Street Dancehall. It’s been called a true Texas dancehall, the likes of which are not often seen in 2017. Visitors can catch a variety of musical acts on its stage, whether it’s a traditional country act or more contemporary fare. “Mercer Street Dancehall has got the dancehall feel with a honky-tonk vibe, and the fact that it’s in Dripping Springs makes it better,” legendary country music singer Dale Watson said. “Best Honky-Tonk in Central Texas,” Jimmie Vaughn famous guitarist and fourtime Grammy award winner added. The dancehall also has one of the largest dance floors in Hays County. And just in case you’re a little rusty with your dance moves, Mercer Street Dancehall offers dance lessons every Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.. But the music doesn’t stop on the north side of Mercer Street. Directly across the street sits Hudson’s 24
2017 DRIPPING SPRINGS VISITOR’S GUIDE
on Mercer. Owners Chad and Natasha Hudson say it was created by artists for artists, with state of the art sound boards, recording studio, and five music lesson rooms in the back. In it, you’ll find a combination of home grown Central Texas talent, as well as nationally known musicians. Chad Hudson receives calls from musicians that play much larger venues that now want to play in Dripping Springs. “They heard about the ambiance and the energy of Hudson’s,” Chad said. Muddy Waters Blues icon Paul Oscher said of Hudson’s, “Man I like it out here. It’s a place with an old time feel, a close in audience feel musicians love.” During his visit, Oscher delighted Hudson’s patrons in the patio with a “pre-show” before officially taking to the Hudson’s stage. The music scene continues to expand with many local restaurants, coffee houses, and bars supporting the cause. At the Barbershop, a pub on Mercer where many locals have their own name-engraved mugs waiting for them behind the bar, visitors can see live music every Tuesday night. Nearby restaurant Homespun, and Sidecar Wine Tasting Room also have stages for shows during the week. There is always something happening in the Historic District. “This is the heart of Dripping Springs,” John McIntosh, coowner of the Barber Shop said.

PEDERNALES FALLS P
edernales Falls State Park may have the most tranquil set of falls you can find. The park’s namesake feature allows visitors to get up-close and personal with the beauty of the Pedernales River. “The falls are more of a cascading waterfall, not a dropping waterfall,” Carl Flocke, assistant superintendent of Pedernales Falls State Park, said. “It gently rolls down over a series of limestone ledges in the river. It spills over these rocks forming a neat water pattern. There are areas where it shoots through rapids. There are deep pools between the falls as well that are very pretty. You can wander out and hike around them and explore the channels were the river used to run and has carved out caves and grottoes around the fall. It’s a fun place to get out, see and hike around. The whole area is very beautiful.” The 5,212-acre park sits just a few miles west of Dripping Springs. With miles of river front access, the park is a hit in the summer time for those looking for water recreation. Beyond swimming, the park offers miles of hiking. There are over 40 miles of hike and bike trails. “We have several creeks running through the park that form neat pools and formations,” Flocke said. “They can be accessed by our trail system and they get you out deep into the Hill Country. You can hike out on to ridges that allow you to see untarnished Hill Country views. You can go up and down over hills and ridges with junipers and oaks.” The park is located at 2585 Park Road 6026, Johnson City. Swimming, hiking, camping and fishing are the most popular activities. Day access is only $6 per adults, children are free. Overnight camping is an additional $5 per night per adult. More information can be found at tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ pedernales-falls or by calling (830) 868-7304.

WESTCAVE PRESERVE T
he highlights of Westcave Preserve are the cave formations and waterfalls that are surrounded by native vegetation on the 75-acre park. “In terms of geological time it is about 100,000 years of erosion from the Pedernales River that has formed a beautiful canyon,” Paul Vickery, education director at Westcave Preserve, said. “When you get to the head, there is this magnificent grotto. You’ve got lush ferns and mosses growing. In the summer months it may be a 20 degree temperature shift from the upper area down to the grotto.” It is worth a trip to take in all that the preserve offers. Tours of Westcave allow visitors to see and believe the wonders of the park. Guided tours are the only way to protect the fragile ecosystem. The goal is to protect, respect, steward and educate the public. “Our guided tour gives you a perspective of how our property has been in recovery mode for the last 40 years,” Vickery said. “We celebrated our 40th year last year. That continued dedication is not only to preserve our current features but to allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of nature and seek inspiration from it.” The gorgeous grotto is only available for view via guided

tour that are offered on a first come first serve basis on Saturdays and Sundays only. Tours are $5 for ages 4 through 12 and $10 for 13 years old and up. A special family rate of $25 is available for two adults and up to four children, but call ahead first because rates may change this spring. Beyond the guided tours to the grotto are the upland trails that are available throughout the week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The one-mile loop features a bird blind, prairie restoration project and a glimpse into the natural side of the Texas Hill Country. Run by the non-profit Westcave Outdoors Center, the preserve also features the Warren Skaarren Environmental Learning Center. Part visitor’s center, part classroom, the center is 3,000 feet and can accommodate up to 150. The classroom teaches ways to preserve the environment. An aperture in the ceiling allows sunlight to actually show what season it is with a meridian line and sky map embedded in the terrazzo floor. There are also Star Parties held once a month and other events worth seeing. Take time to visit a place to relax, learn more about the environment and to see the natural wonders of Westcave. The preserve is located at 24814 Hamilton Pool Road. Visit www.westcave.org or call (830) 8253442 for more information.

HAMILTON POOL J
ust minutes north of Dripping Springs is a lush natural pool of water known as Hamilton Pool. Known since the time of Native Americans, this nature preserve has a concave overhang that creates a beautiful waterfall. It is begging to be explored and enjoyed. “When people come in from out of town, and I want to show them the natural beauty of Central Texas, I take them to Hamilton Pool,” Michael Brewster, Park Supervisor for Hamilton Pool Preserve, said. “It never fails to astonish people.” “Most people can’t believe they are in Texas, because it looks more like the rainforest.” Swimming, picnicking and hiking are just a few of the pleasures that the park has to offer in its 232 acres. The limestone cliffs, the cave and the beauty that surrounds it are well worth the price of admission. After summer swimming season, the park is quiet and nature’s beauty is at the forefront. The waterfalls and the confluence with the Pedernales River is a must see. Hamilton Pool is also a nature preserve with a mission to provide habitat for wildlife. There is diverse vegetation throughout the park, which serves as a home to the Golden-Cheeked Warbler
and a variety of other birds. The designation as a nature preserve does come along with a few restrictions. Hamilton Pool does not allow pets, fires, fishing, biking or camping in the park. Visitor amenities include a picnic area and composting restrooms by the parking lot. The pool trail is a quarter mile in length and includes a series of rock steps descending into the canyon. The trail is rugged and steep. Sturdy footgear is recommended. Visitors with physical disabilities can arrange assistance into the canyon by requesting a ride by preserve staff. The ride takes a visitor into the canyon, but not all the way to the pool, since no vehicle can make it to the pool. Reservations are required to enter Hamilton Pool from May 1, 2017 through September 30, 17. Guided tours are available October through April on Saturdays at 10 a.m. weather permitting. Call (512) 264-2740 for more information. The park is located at 24300 Hamilton Pool Road. For more visit parks.traviscountytx.gov/find-apark/hamilton-pool.

Texas Night Sky Festival ssPhotos courtesy of Jerry Moreno
S
itting outside under a dark sky and looking up at the stars creates an unexplainable feeling. It’s a feeling that not everybody gets a chance to discover, and that is why Dripping Springs has taken steps to protect it. “It’s very calming and awe-inspiring,” Cindy Luongo Cassidy, with International Dark Sky Association Texas, said. “About 80 percent of the population lives in a place where they can’t see the Milky Way. Many have never seen the Milky Way; they have never ventured far enough away.” As a community that truly appreciates the night sky, the City of Dripping Springs became the first community in Texas – and sixth in the world – to receive the International Dark-Sky Community designation in 2014. The city has been recognized for its efforts to adopt lighting standards that reduce light pollution within the city limits and its vast extraterritorial jurisdiction. For its efforts in preventing light pollution and protecting the night sky, the designation has brought with it the Texas Night Sky Festival. In March, thousands of people will flock to Dripping Springs for an event as spectacular as the stars. 40
2017 DRIPPING SPRINGS VISITOR’S GUIDE
“It’s an appreciation of the night sky and the wonder of it,” Luongo said. “It’s your connection to the universe.” There are activities for the young and old. Last year, Native Americans from the Lakota tribe told their stories of the constellations and the night sky that have been passed down from generation to generation. Small inflatable planetariums are displayed. Once seated inside the oval bubble, shows, movies and the stars are projected onto the roof. The festival will also feature live presentations, education, science and arts displays, solar observations, a mobile planetarium, demonstrations of glare-reducing lighting and tasty food. For those who want to try and get the most out of the experience, there is a badge program to encourage patrons to visit all the different stations offered. At the end of the evening, a Star Party is set up outside of Dripping Springs Ranch Park. “After it gets dark there will be a field full of different telescopes with astronomers running them to see different objects in the sky,” Luongo said. The event starts at 2 p.m. at Dripping Springs Ranch Park on March 18, 2017.

The shoots are up close and personal, and you can watch the cowboys get ready to get on the bull if you want.” The rodeo showcases the finest in rodeo skills, food, drink, beer and entertainment. Bring your entire family out to enjoy arts and crafts vendors, kid activities and more. There will be bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc, bull riding, barrel racing, roping and a rodeo clown. Founders Day Festival F
ounders Day is a three-day celebration that takes over downtown Dripping Springs. The festival kicks off with a parade, has free live music on two stages, the Mighty Thomas Carnival, food, beer, street dances, cook-off competitions and more than 150 arts and crafts booths and businesses vendors. “It is by far the largest event of the year, and it is unique because it celebrates the founding of our community,” Bonnie Gonzalez, Communications Coordinator for the city of Dripping Springs, said. The Annual Founders Day Festival honors and celebrates the founding of the Dripping Springs community in 1850 by the Moss, Wallace, and Pound families. The three-day jubilee promotes cooperation and volunteerism in the community while generating community spirit. s the weather finally begins to turn cool, the holiday season starts heating up. In Dripping Springs, Christmas officially kicks off right after Thanksgiving with Christmas on Mercer, the annual festival that takes over downtown Dripping Springs, which will be held on December 3. “It’s just a small town event,” Sharon Goss, with the Dripping Springs Lions Club, said. “It’s got that hometown feel with great shopping to get you in the holiday spirit.” The Lions Club and the city of Dripping Springs host the free event. Mercer Street is closed to vehicle traffic allowing shoppers to meander the street and check out the vendor booths as well as the local shops. Dozens of booths line the street selling crafts and plenty of items fit for putting under a tree. 46

There are plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained, making the whole event perfect for families. Not only is there a stage with live music and performances from local artists and dance studios, there is a petting zoo, trackless train rides, pony rides and, perhaps best of all, Santa. Santa’s Workshop is set up for children to have a one-on-one experience to make sure they can request all the toys they want for Christmas. It’s also a great chance to take a free photo with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The event starts at 10 a.m., but it really lights up at dusk. When the sky goes dark, everyone gathers around the Christmas tree at the Veterans Memorial Park for the official lighting. The middle school choir leads the Christmas carols, and local dance studios and the Hi-Steppers put on a show. It really is the start of Christmas in Dripping Springs.

ome out and sample the largest assortment of Texas wines, craft beers, gourmet foods and spirits available under one roof, at the 10th Annual Dripping with Taste Wine & Food Festival. Sponsored by the Dripping Springs Visitors Bureau, the festival was created to showcase the growing number of local vineyards, breweries, distilleries and food fares peppering the area. That number continues to grow and so does the festival. This year’s festival includes over 75 “tasteful” vendors and an estimated two thousand food and wine enthusiasts. One of the more exciting additions to the festival has been the inclusion of distilleries. Now, rum, vodka, gin and even a little whiskey have joined the party. Many of them are made right here in the area. But, the fun doesn’t stop at the tasting. The line-up includes cooking demonstrations as well as a wine, beer and a distilled spirits demo, all using some of the products featured at the festival. Plus there’s 11 musical acts, specialty vendors selling their wares, a free photo booth and lots more. There’s even actual grape stomping and you can get a t-shirt to prove you did it! “This isn’t your typical, snooty, wear a tie, spit out good booze festival. It is a true celebration of the Texas Hill Country and the flavor of Texas,” says nine-year festival attendee, Stephanie Holtzendorf. So mark your calendar and plan to visit us for this great Hill Country tradition and have your wish granted of sampling all of Dripping Springs in one sitting. The 10th Annual Dripping with Taste Wine & Food Festival will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Dripping Springs Ranch Park & Event Center. See drippingwithtaste.com for more information.
Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival T
he Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival, this year from October 20 – 22, is now a local tradition. The weather cools down, and the music fans turn out in downtown Dripping Springs to enjoy just about any type of acoustic music you would want. If you don’t like what you’re hearing, wait a couple of minutes and somebody else will be playing something completely different. The Saturday night headliner show is a ticketed event, but the daytime shows are free. Each venue hosts four individual songwriters for an hour and a half. Each songwriter does one of their own songs before passing it off to the next songwriter. The process is called a writer round or song swap, which allows everyone a chance to sing while giving each songwriter the ability to pick their best tunes. The festival starts on Friday at noon and concludes on Sunday afternoon with a wrap party at The Barber Shop. The songwriters come from all over – even Australia. Dripping Springs residents and local B&Bs house the songwriters. Although not paid, the songwriters are fed and have a roof over their heads while they are here. The venues include Acopon Brewing, The Barber Shop, Hudson’s on Mercer, Mazama Coffee Co., Mercer Street Dancehall and Sidecar Tasting Room on Old Fitzhugh Road. See over 45 musicians during the Dripping Springs Songwriter’s Festival and who knows? Maybe you’ll enjoy a future number one hit. PIONEER DAY
W
ho says time travel doesn’t exist? On Pioneer Day at the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead, visitors get to experience what life was like in the mid-1800s. Covered wagon rides, blacksmith skills, weavers, civil war reenactors and 1840s costumed docents are on hand to explain what life was like when the Pound Family first settled in Dripping Springs in what was called an “untamed section of Texas” in 1854. During this one-day event, guests get to see more than 40 demonstrators of pioneer crafts and skills, such as butter churning, blacksmithing and quilting. The Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead is Dripping Springs’ only museum, and it is not a replica. It is the actual house that Doctor Joseph Pound and his wife Sarah lived in. The house was not only the doctor’s residence but also the first school, a place of worship and the center of activity for the community. During the restoration, each piece of lumber was numbered and replaced in their proper position. Even the mortar that holds the house together was from the same mixture that was used originally. Be sure to make Pioneer Day on September 23, 2017, a part of your visit. round Austin, one iconic BBQ’s name stands out and is a favorite with tourists and locals alike. Scott Roberts and his wife are owners of Salt Lick, the famed barbecue joint that his father started in 1967. There isn’t a type of meat that isn’t served at Salt Lick. Stop in and try a slab of brisket, pork ribs, chicken, beef ribs, turkey, pulled pork and prime rib. The restaurant is famous for barbecuing its meat over an open flame in the middle of the dinning area. The Salt Lick as grown into one of the biggest restaurants around as it packs in hundreds every night of the week, but property still tells a small town love story. Thurman Roberts, Sr. and his wife Hisako met while he was stationed in Hawaii. They married and moved to Driftwood. It was there with Hisako’s Japanese heritage came into play. The BBQ sauce was perfected and combined perfectly with Thurman’s old fashioned, slow smoking method learned from his grandmother. Fifty years later and now the third generation BBQ is better than ever. But great meat isn’t all they
serve. The restaurant is now home to Salt Lick Cellars, which opened a tasting room on property in 2009. Many fine wines are available, but some of the best award-winning wines are made from the grapes grown right on the property. It is an ever-growing endeavor. The Salt Lick is a family style and cash-only establishment but it is also a lot of fun. This is one place to visit if you are a visitor, as the locals know how good the BBQ and all the fixings truly are. DRIFTWOOD
Duchman family winery
A Sunday drive to ITALY
D
uchman Family Winery is one of the most beautiful wineries in Texas. Nestled in the Texas Hill Country near Driftwood, the stone architecture and rolling hills illicit the feel of an elegant winery in Italy. In fact, HGTV listed the winery as one of the 20 most picturesque in the country. The look and feel of Italy was intentional as founders Lisa and Stan Duchman love unique Italian grape varieties, which have inspired some of the wine varieties like the Vermentino, Sangiovese and Dolcetto. But make no mistake this winery is truly Texan. Duchman uses 100 percent Texas grapes to make the wines with the majority of its fruit acquired from the Texas High Plains where cooler temperatures and climate are ideal for producing Italian grape varieties. All of the winery’s current releases can be sampled and purchased at the winery’s tasting room and the estate’s beautiful Italianate villa and grounds are open to visitors who can enjoy their wines with a picnic lunch. Stop by and have a taste at picnic tables under the shade of oak trees. The tasting room is open seven days a week. For more information, visit www.duchmanwinery.com.

DINING NEXT TO Duchman at
Trattoria Lisina J
ust a few minutes from Dripping Springs next to Duchman Family Winery is a beautiful Tuscany-inspired five star restaurant. Trattoria is an Italian family owned type of restaurant, less casual than a an Italian ristorante. Trattoria Lisina is that. Damian & Trina Mandola are the owners and the inside’s looks and smells along with the outside gardens scream Italiano! The grounds are Italian-inspired with fountains, gardens and ambiance. There is even a bocce court. As for the food, the pasta is al dente, pizzas are served out of a brick oven and other recipes are exactly what is expected. Meats are cured on-site and the gelato is Mandola made. Bellisimo, and buono in every way, meaning the food is both beautiful and very tasty. A sincere love of family, friends, food and wine are the hallmarks of the restaurant and it’s presence is in every bite. Fish, meats and pasta all Italian-style are available such as ravioli, or osso buco. There’s a lot of skill and experience in their servings, courtesy of grandma’s cucina (kitchen). The family used her and other relatives’ recipes for all their restaurants and it has been successful for the whole family. So it was no surprise when back in 1986, Damian and his nephew Johnny founded Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Houston. Both sides of the whole family have been involved in Italian and other restaurants around the Gulf Coast. In fact, his late mother– in–law is Ninfa Laurenz of Ninfa’s fame. Damian decided to move out to the Hill Country, and along with his own panache, opened Trattorria Lisina, where it is Italy in the Hill Country everyday. Hours of Operation Sunday 11a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday closed Tuesday – Thursday 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. Fri - Sat 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. www.trattorialisina.com (512) 894-3111

FALL CREEK VINEYARDS

all Creek Vineyards may be new to the Driftwood area, but it is far from a new winery. Originally owned in 1975 in Tow, Texas, Fall Creek was one of the first wineries in the state. In 2016, the winery opened a second location in Driftwood, because they found something special in the soil. “What we have found is that some of the best soils in Texas, as good as anywhere in the world, are here in this Onion Creek Valley,” Ed Auler, owner of Fall Creek, said. “We found that the soils in the Salt Lick Vineyards (directly across the street from Fall Creek) are producing grapes that are making wines that are getting awards in international competition… What we are finding is truly world class wines are coming out of these soils.” The tasting room in Dripping Springs is still getting its feet wet when it comes to growing grapes, but the wine on hand is already award-winning. Fall Creek’s winemaker Sergio Cuadra came to the company four years ago. “He didn’t come here to make great Texas wines,” Auler said. “He came here to make great wines that just happened to come from Texas.” Fall Creek Vineyards won Top Texas Winery at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2016 and won the Top Texas White Wine in 2017. Apparently, the international wine community agrees that the

wines are world class. In 2016, Fall Creek Vineyards GSM Salt Lick Vineyards 2014 wine was awarded a double gold medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition, one of the most prestigious competitions and awards in the world. Three other Fall Creek Wines received gold and silver medals at the competition. While the main Fall Creek Winery is still in Tow, the new tasting room in Driftwood, just outside of Dripping Springs, is a treat to see. “We have a gorgeous property,” Brewster said. “They purchased a home and converted into a tasting hall. So it has an elegant and cozy environment. It feels like you are drinking wine in your own perfect home, and you have the opportunity to do that over looking vineyards and the Texas Hill Country. Also you are across the street from one of the top barbecue restaurants in the state (Salt Lick) so you have the wafting smell of barbecue
coming across the road.” Fall Creek Vineyards is located at 18059A FM 1826 in Driftwood. The hours of operation are Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. They can be contacted at (512) 858-4050 or online at www. fcv.com.
