Welcome

Welcome to

DRIPPINGSPRINGS

t is my pleasure to welcome you to Dripping Springs. We are pleased that you have chosen to visit our beautiful, historically rich community. Dripping Springs and the surrounding area offers picturesque views of rugged hills, spring-fed creeks, stately oak trees, and even sightings of longhorns and other exotic animals. Our residents enjoy an outstanding quality of life, exemplary schools, stunning residential areas, a vibrant commercial center, beautiful parks and open spaces, as well as a broad range of recreational activities. With so many assets, it makes for a friendly and caring community like no other. Dripping Springs is a dynamic, thriving population that continues to experience tremendous growth. Because of new development and the creation of employment opportunities, our residents can shop locally, work closer to home, and spend more time with their families. We understand our decisions today impact future generations, so our

Council, Commissions, committees, staff, and volunteers are all working diligently to preserve what makes our community unique; that is, our rural character, charming downtown area, historic structures, springs, creeks, natural areas and park space. If you would like to learn more about our community and some of the projects underway, just check out our city website at www.cityofdrippingsprings. com. Though we are trying to preserve our small town charm, we are also striving to meet the needs of our residents. Careful local planning has allowed for top-notch amenities such as our Farmer’s Market, community library, senior citizen center, and parks. For a small community of only 2,100 citizens within the city limits, we are proud to have set aside more than 200 acres of parkland and open spaces. A leader among small communities across Texas, we are proud to be a Certified Scenic City and to have to have been designated as an International Dark Sky Community. As a “Gold-Level” recipient of the Scenic City Award, our City was recognized for implementing high-quality scenic standards for public roadways and public spaces. In addition, as the very first International Dark Sky Community in Texas, we received special designation for protecting and preserving the character of our nighttime sky. I invite you to shop locally, dine at one of our popular eateries, stroll down our famous town center on Mer-

cer Street or the eclectic Old Fitzhugh Road, visit our annual festivals, and stop by any of our five beautiful City parks. Our biggest park, Dripping Springs Ranch Park is an equestrian-themed parkland located on 110 rolling acres on Ranch Road 12 across from Dripping Springs Elementary School. The Event Center and park grounds are heavily utilized by the community for various activities including rodeos, equestrian and livestock shows, fairs and carnivals, trade shows, weddings and galas, meetings and seminars. In addition, residents and visitors regularly use the crushed granite hiking trails, playground, picnic areas, primitive campsites, and equestrian trails. Our Annual Founders Day Festival will be held April 24-26th in downtown Dripping Springs. Hosted by the City of Dripping Springs and various community organizations, Founders Day is our community’s largest hometown celebration of heritage and pioneer spirit. The proceeds from the weekend of live music, delicious food, and good old-fashioned fun directly benefit local non-profit organizations, churches, school and park programs, youth groups, and charities. We hope you will join us for this family fun weekend and then come back again and again to visit our friendly community. Best Regards, Mayor Todd Purcell

The town features amazing local and regional parks, historic sites that should not be missed, shopping that is creative, food that is sure to impress,

hether it’s shopping at a quaint boutique, grabbing a beer at the well known “Barbershop,” or treating your tastebuds to some ice cream and yogurt, there’s something for everyone in Downtown Dripping Springs. Mercer Street and Old Fitzhugh Road are lined with an eclectic mix of shops, eateries and more line, adding to the city’s charm. When taking a stroll down these streets, don’t be surprised if you feel like you’ve taken a step back in time. The city has made an effort to preserve its historic buildings of which many are occupied by today’s merchants. Besides the local level, on a larger scale, the Dripping Springs Downtown Historic District is listed in the

National Register of Historic Places. The city’s history dates back to the 1850s. “Historic districts are nice because it gives you a glimpse back into how this town developed. Mercer Street was originally 290, so you kind of have that old highway feel,” Barbershop Owner John McIntosh said. “You have the old academy. You have what looks like old gas stations, because they were old gas stations. You have an old feed store, that small town feel from all the way back to the late 20s.” McIntosh started the first freestanding bar in Dripping Springs five years ago. It’s called the Barbershop, named

after its previous use. “I think we were the only thing that stayed open past 5 p.m. on Mercer Street. It’s been quite the change, now that you have The Mercantile next door or The Mercer Street Dance Hall and Mazama Coffee Company. It’s been a pretty big change to go from being the only thing on the street to do to having a lot of choices,” McIntosh said. “Same thing on Old Fitzhugh, we have little farmstead houses. I think that’s going to allow those unique areas to maintain their character while they’re being re-developed and you’re already seeing that, some unique new businesses showing up . Old Fitzhugh has really changed in the past year. Pink West opened and has now been joined by Goodie Two Shoes and the Bell Springs tasting room

going in along with Yapa Empanadas,” he said. Now, all of the merchants are collaborating for a new monthly event called First Thursday. “First Thursday happens each month beginning April 2, starting at 5 p.m. and ending by 10 p.m.,” Director of Tourism Pam Owens said. “It is an extension of each of the participating businesses’ day. First Thursday merchants will have a variety of specials which might include one-day sales, special activities, food,

music and art. All Dripping Springs retail businesses and restaurants are invited to be part of First Thursday but the concentration will be on Mercer and Old Fitzhugh Streets. You can locate who is a First Thursday vendor by the logo and by similar lighting outside of each business.” For more information about First Thursday, you can visit www.firstthursdaydrippingsprings.org.

ripping Springs has long been known for the sheer amount of stellar wineries along the Hill Country wine trail, but it is quickly becoming known as a haven for craft breweries. Twisted X Brewery highlights some of the unique aspects that make Dripping Springs a destination for beer drinkers. “It’s just a nice day trip to get out of the hustle and bustle and enjoy nature while also having high quality craft beer to drink as well,” Geoff Schalchlin. Twisted X tasting room manager, said. “Dripping Springs is becoming a mecca for craft beverages. It’s just beautiful out here.” Twisted X, located just minutes outside of town off Ranch Road 12, on FM 150, is known for it’s Tex-Mex styled beer. The owners started the brewery because there weren’t many Mexican styled craft breweries, a beer they loved to

Continued from page 14 » drink. “We pull from traditional Mexican beverages or cuisine,” Schalchlin said. “We have a few Mexican style lagers that use Mexican style lager yeast specifically cultivated and coming from Mexico.” The original flagship beer, the Twisted X premium lager, grew from those origins. The crisp lager isn’t very bitter making it an easy beer for any drinker. “Either a beer snob or someone who drinks Coors Light could drink that and get a really high quality beer,” Schalchlin said. The Tex-Mex style allows them to offer a few types of beer you just don’t find anywhere else like Feugo, a jalapeno based pilsner. “We are using a traditional Mexican ingredient in a German style beer, but it has a really good crisp up front flavor and a pepper finish on the back end of the pallet,” Schalchlin said. Then, there are the Dulce Vida Tequila barrels nestled in the back of the brewery. That is where Senor Viejo, a high alcohol content black lager, is aged for six months. “You won’t find beers aged in tequila barrels hardly anywhere else on the market,” Schalchilin said. Beyond the brewery’s standard bearers, they offer many one-of-a-kind options that rotate almost monthly. “We have really talented brewers who are not afraid to do experimental beers,” Schalchlin said. For example, the brewers made a beer called Hoptart, made with strawberries and strawberry poptarts. The four beers always offered are the Twisted X premium lager, Cow Creek dark lager - a Vienna style lager - and Chupahopra, their IPA. But depending on the day, you never know what else you might find on tap at Twisted X, but one thing is for sure, at least you know it will be good. The tasting room sells beer seven days a week, Thursday 1-8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

DEEP EDDY

Vodka Distillery

B

rand new to the Dripping Springs area and as modern as modern can be, the Deep Eddy Vodka Distillery is located on the US 290 Highway. Coming from Austin and just before Dripping Springs proper, the ultra modern looking building of glass and steel, and native stone blocks sits behind a big blue Deep Eddy neon sign. The distillery is where Deep Eddy Vodka is made, although only Monday through Thursday, the days that the tasting room is not open. But the distillery’s equipment can be seen through windows, across from the serving bar area. Stainless steel apparatus such as automatic bottlers, labeling machines and other operational vodka producing equipment sit silent. But the real fun is on this side of the bar or relaxing in the different sections of the hospitality room: by the fireplace, in the corner sharing a couch, or sometimes listening to a live band. The neon signs gracing the walls are not only modern, but at the same time, a throwback to an earlier time in keeping with the look of the product that features 1940’s type drawings of pinup girls in bathing suits on its label. There’s a private tasting room featuring audio and video capabilities, available for parties with a reservation and also

an outdoor patio with picnic tables overlooking the Hill Country scenery. The reason for the tasting room though, is to taste the Deep Eddy different varieties thoroughly, then decide which is your favorite. Is it the original Deep Eddy Vodka, the “everybody loves” Deep Eddy Ruby Red, the Deep Eddy Lemon, Deep Eddy Cranberry or the Deep Eddy Sweet Tea. A paddle of four different varieties can be purchased in order for you to make up your mind. If you already know your favorite, Mason Jar Cocktails and Hi Ball Cocktails can also be purchased, with you keeping the glass. There are also Signature Cup Cocktails that can be purchased and are moderately priced. Food trucks are also on the premises most days for a bite to eat. An enjoyable way to spend some time, sipping and savoring different vodka flavors is to be had at the Deep Eddy Distillery, just a few minutes east of Dripping Springs. The distillery is open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The gift shop also features the Deep Eddy logo with pinups on T-shirts, tin signs and the usual other products.

ineries are to the Hill Country, what BBQ is to Texas. It’s hard to imagine one without the other and with Dripping Springs being the “Gateway to the Hill Country,” it’s not surprising that the town has its own wine trail. One of the featured wineries on the trail is Bell Springs Winery, named after the road it’s located on. Owner Nate Pruitt has been in business for five years. “I think what we’re known for before the wine is just the atmosphere,” Pruitt said. “It’s a laid back atmosphere, with a big space where you can just hang out, have a picnic. If you have dogs and they’re friendly and on a leash, that’s fine.” Of course, the wine keeps people coming back as well. “We make a little bit of everything. We usually have 6 or 7 wines on the menu. The majority are dry but we have a couple of sweet ones,” Pruitt said. One of his more well known wines is Cabernet Franc. “It’s a nice big bold tannic red,” He said. Although he’s not currently making wine from any of his own grapes, he is growing some. “We grow Petite Sirah at the property and we grow some other American hybrids as well. If you want to try a bottle of Bell Springs Wine, you’ll have to visit his website or winery. “We only distribute our wines through the tasting room,” He said. Speaking of tasting room, Pruitt will be opening a second one in Dripping Springs downtown on Old Fitzhugh Road. “We’re going to call it Sidecar,” He said. So be on the lookout for that to open early spring. As for exploring the rest of the wine trail, you can head over to Westcave Cellars Winery and Vineyard located on Hamilton Pool Road and Hawk’s Shadow Winery on McGregor Lane. To see a map of the wine trail and learn more about the featured wineries, you can visit www.drippingwinetrail.com

ords can hardly describe the beauty that is Hamilton Pool, arguably the best swimming hole in the state of Texas. The cold natural water, spills over the top of a limestone outcropping and falls 50-feet to create a chilling grotto hidden in the Texas Hill Country. The unique concave wall creates a gorgeous backdrop to a stunning waterfall highlighted by the blue green water flowing through Hamilton Pool. It is truly a sight to be seen. On top of swimming, the Hamilton Pool Preserve, a Travis County park just a few miles north of Dripping Springs, offers hiking trails and Golden-Cheek Warbler habitat. The diverse vegetation of Hamilton Pool ranges from semi-arid species in the uplands to riparian species in the canyon. The uplands of the preserve are a juniper and oak savannah with a variety of native grasses and wildflowers. Several rare plant species including canyon mock-orange, red bay (western-most colony of this eastern species), and chatter box orchid are known to occur in the canyon areas along Hamilton Creek. Make sure and have alternate plans if you are headed out to Hamilton Pool as the park often fills with visitors to the point that cars must be turned away. Typically, the cost to enter the preserve is $15 per car. The park is located at 24300 Hamilton Pool Road. For more information, call (512) 264-2740.

The river also has access for the popular swimming area and is a favorite spot among anglers, specifically those fishing for white bass. There are 18-miles of trails, perfect for hiking or mountain biking. All together, the surrounding parks and open space make up 2,427 acres, and are home to a wide variety of wildlife. There is a two to three mile bird walk where you can expect to see many species. Reimer Ranch is just down the road from Hamilton Pool making it an easy alternative when Hamilton Pools’ popularity fills the park. The park is located at 23610 Hamilton Road. Six miles of Pedernales River front access are highlighted by the “falls.” While not a waterfall, like one might think, the name aptly described the descending flow of the river as it drapes from one crest down to the next. The beautiful falls are great for and up-close-and-personal look at the river as you can often walk to the

The 5,212 acre park offers up to 19 miles of hiking trails that winds up and down the Texas Hill Country allowing for some spectacular views. The wildlife is also abundant and over 150 bird species have been observed in Pedernales State Park. There are also gems hidden away within the hiking trails like Twin Falls among the numerous natural springs. The park is located at 2585 Park Road 6026 just a few miles west of Dripping Springs. WESTCAVE T

he Westcave Preserve serves as an outdoor classroom for visitor’s to discover, explore and appreciate nature in the 75-acre park. The Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center will leave you breathless with its beautiful preserve on Hamilton Pool Road. Prepare yourself for the majestic beauty of one of the Texas Hill Country’s most unique nature preserves. Expert-guided tours take visitors from an arid savannah through a limestone crevice into a sheltered canyon of lush plant life. At the head of the canyon stands Westcave, with a stunning 40-foot waterfall replenishing the emerald pool below. Visitation to the Westcave Preserve Canyon Trail is by guided tour only to minimize the impact on this beautiful and fragile natural site, though other areas of the park preserve offer self-guided tours hiking. The Canyon Trail hike is a little less than a mile roundtrip and takes approximately an hour and a half. Although the upper section of the trail is accessible friendly to wheelchairs and strollers, the lower part of the Canyon Trail, including the waterfall and cave, has some steep and uneven footing steps and is not wheelchair accessible. Also, the preserve houses a 3,000-square foot discovery center that includes a sun aperture in the ceiling above the solar exhibit where sunlight is projected on the floor and crosses a meridian at local noon time each day. The environmental learning center hosts thousands of school children each year. The lush canyon can be seen via guided tours on weekends from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The upland trails can be accessed weekdays (except Monday) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, go to www.westcave.org or call (830) 825-3442.

Wedding capital of

F

rom the long list of venues to the romantic hill country sunsets, it’s no wonder Dripping Springs is dubbed the Wedding Capital of Texas. There are more than 30 event venues within a 17 mile radius of the community, according to the Dripping Springs Area Chamber of Commerce. One of those venues is The Lookout, owned by Ann Jones. “It’s simple outdoor elegance combined with a hill top location that offers a 30 mile view of the hills and sunset, gardens, fountains, over 100 oak trees,” described Jones. The Lookout can accommodate up to 150 guests. “A few of the amenities include a large covered pavilion for dining or dancing, catering kitchen, brides dressing suite, covered porches, and tree covered patios,” Jones said. It all sets the tone for the type of wedding only the Hill Country can offer. “The Texas Hill Country holds a special place in all Texan’s hearts and everyone likes to visit. Having a wedding here is automatically special for that reason,” Jones said. “The Wedding Capital is really a fun thing for those of us in the events business. Out here all the venues are so different offering “out of the box” options. Everyone wants their wedding to be different and spectacular. We can offer that to the bride and groom who want their personal statement not to be about the hotel ball room.” The Dripping Springs Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau organized their first Wedding Capital of Texas Bridal Showcase in February. They plan on making the show an annual event. To stay up to date on wedding related events in the area, you can go to www.facebook. com/weddingcapitaloftexas.org

POUND HOUSE MUSEUM

A

true gem reflecting the past of Dripping Springs, the Pound House Farmstead was established in 1854. Located in the appropriatly named Founders Memorial Park on Ranch Road 12, near downtown, the park within a park gives you a glimpse of how Dripping Springs looked in its “Old West” past. Surrounded by pasture and large, old oaks, the house itself was the center of the young town, serving as the first schoolhouse and church, while always remaining its main purpose, that as the doctor’s office. Furnished in period furniture, part of it is the oldest structure in Dripping Springs, with docents there to tell the tales of the house and that of the founders’ lives. Although the structure does not look out of date, electricity was only added in the 1940’s and still the only running water is that out of a cistern obtained by lifting the window, drawing the water by using a pulley system and a rope, then running it to the kitchen. Behind the house is the blacksmith’s area, with a volunteer blacksmith on Saturdays exhibiting the craft that kept horses and wagons working, the form of transportation during times past. To remind Dripping Springs of its past, the Pound House is also involved in the local community. Located at the Triangle, the Farmer’s Market on Wednesday April 8, will feature one of Pound House’s chuck wagons, to instruct the community on its history with the city’s Founder’s Day in a

few weeks, and to also promote its Heritage Gala. In May, the Heritage Gala, this year on May 2, is the only fundraiser of the museum. In June, the city holds a Tomato Round Up, where local gardeners enter homegrown tomatoes in various categories for judges and people’s choice awards. Held at Founder’s Park, the Pound House will feature live demonstrations. In July, Time Travel Thursday happens every Thursday starting July 9, with hands-on pioneer activities for kids aged 6- 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. The Pound House is open every Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. with trained docents on site to help with any questions one might have. Admission is always free.

DRIPPING SPRINGS RANCH PARK F

rom Dog show, to craft show, wedding showcase to livestock shows. There’s always something happening at The Dripping Springs Ranch Park and Event Center. The venue includes a 166,000 square foot covered arena, a 12,000 square foot meeting room and more. “A lot of people in the community think it’s just a rodeo arena. There’s so much to do out there,” Lynne Dickinson said, Dripping Springs Ranch Park Coordinator. “It’s 110 acres. We have a 3/4 mile hiking trail that goes around a beautiful pond on the park. We have a playground. We have numerous open spaces and fields. A lot of people bring their dogs.” So even on the rare occasion, there’s not an event going on, there is still plenty to be enjoyed just by visiting the grounds. “We have washer pits and horseshoe pits next to the playground. There’s a picnic area there. There’s a two mile horse trail. Admission is free to the park itself so go take advantage of the outdoor space that’s there,” Dickinson said. The Events Center is a fairly new venue. It’s less than two years old, although the park opened in 2008 before the facility was built. In that short amount of time, it’s already proving to be a destination spot of sorts.

“We take bookings 18 months in advance and in all honesty, almost every weekend for the next 18 months is booked,” Dickinson said. “It’s been very successful.” Dripping Springs Ranch Park is owned and operated by the City of Dripping Springs. Where to eat CREEK ROAD CAFÉ W

hen travelling to a new area, in order to find a good restaurant, the best thing to do is to go where the locals go. In Dripping Springs, Creek Road Café is one of those places. Returning customers is what keeps Carl Shroyer and Chae Donahue’s business successful. The restaurant’s success is what owner Shroyer says is based on the three very simple rules of running a fine dining restaurant: food, service and atmosphere. If a restaurant is missing one of the three, “they will have a hard time.” The food offerings are off a lunch menu and dinner menu. Food dishes are named for local area landmarks and towns such as the Henly Italian Sub, or Onion Creek Beef Dip for lunch and Ranch Road 12 Cognac Peppercorn Filet of beef tenderloin and Pedernales Pork Chop for dinner. Co-owner Chae Donahue has lived on both the East and

West Coasts and has expertise when it comes to the seafood served. Having been raised in the restaurant business, he over sees the kitchen, to make sure things run right. Seafood offerings are plenty, with Tuesday night being Oyster Night, with certified oysters from the Gulf Coast and entrees that include Belterra Sauteed Shrimp and Harrison Park Salmon, with other seafood specialties. Desserts are also special. The Polo Club Pie is made with coconut chopped from real fresh coconut that is cracked and harvested in the kitchen. The service run by Donahue’s sons Chad and Dylan, is unique as it is a concept of team service. One waiter might take your order, another serve your order and another yet serve you dessert, so that the diners will never feel like they are unwelcome. “You are taken care of by everybody and you get to know all of our staff,” says Shroyer. “If you come

Eat in two minutes before closing, you are as welcome as if you came earlier.” The last piece for success is atmosphere, which is intimate. There are three main areas that are separated by the others and very cozy with subdued lighting. The bar has unique wine holders made out of drilled limestone sitting on it giving it a ‘Dripping Springs’ feel. The stonework everywhere is native limestone.

All the hanging artwork, photographs and paintings are of local area landmarks and of the area. There are also eating areas outside with gardens, weather permitting. The restaurant is open 7 days a week, 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. for lunch and 5 until 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, while closing at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. “Come in your business suit or your flip flops, you are welcome,” says Shroyer. www.creekroadcafe.com or (512)858-9459.

Dripping Springs’

EVENTS

Founders Day F

ounders Day Festival is the community’s largest event and one that locals and visitors alike look forward to every year. The festival celebrates the founding of Dripping Springs which was in 1850 by the Moss, Wallace and Pound families. It’s a grand three-day celebration, complete with a carnival, street dances, a parade and more. “Founders Day is a 28 year old tradition that brings the entire community of Dripping Springs together every

April,” Dripping Springs Resident and Cook Off Club President Mark Treadway said. “The event is filled with good food, fun, music, shopping and fellowship. Many of the BBQ competitors have been competing at Founders Day since before it became a city event. Everyone in Drippin’ looks forward to “Founders.” Treadway has been involved with the festival for almost ten years. For residents like him, Founders Day means so much more than just a fun-filled weekend.

Continued from page 40 » “This festival is part of who we are in Drippin’ and it holds a great tradition of real small town America. There have been so many contributors to this event, from its humble beginnings to what you see today,” Treadway said. It’s something the community takes pride in as there is even a Founders Day Commission who spends a good portion of the year planning the celebration. Founders Day is set for April 24-26 and this year’s parade theme is “Destination Drippin” “I think it says that our community longs for the small town atmosphere that seems to be getting swallowed up by urban America everywhere you look. The folks who grew up here and the people who moved here to get away from the big city, our way of life is getting compromised everyday with urban sprawl,” Treadway said. “Founde’s Day lets us enjoy the reasons we live here in the first place.” For more information about the festival, you can visit www. DRIPPING with taste

D

ripping Springs is a quaint little town just west of Austin. Its small shops and bed and breakfasts are great to get away from the fast pace of the big city. But for big entertainment and for the “most taste of Texas under one roof,” Saturday September 12 is one date to remember. If you’re anywhere around Dripping Springs on Saturday, September 12, something that shouldn’t be missed is the 8th Annual Dripping with Taste, the premiere culinary event of the Hill Country. Every year, area restaurants, breweries, vintners, distillers artisans and more come together for the Dripping Springs Area Chamber of Commerce’s largest fundraiser. With music playing in the background and the rolling hills of Central Texas as a backdrop, the festival is a won-

derful way to spend a September Saturday. Food is prepared by numerous area restaurants, from crepes to cakes, BBQ, Mexican and whatever else you’d desire or you can sample a little bit of all. Music is played all afternoon long. Central Texas is a great place for raising grapes; the combination of limestone soil and the numerous aquifers along with the sunny temperatures produce excellent wine, which can be sampled from over 25 wineries. From sweet to dry, there’s bound to be a perfect glass to suit your taste. If wine isn’t your cup of tea, the crafted beers of the area have plenty to offer. The region’s breweries have multiplied in the past couple of years as has the different flavors that are represented. Whether is Tex-Mex style, ales, or flavored beers, they are featured here. The area is now also booming as a site for distilleries. Vodka, rum, bourbon, and other spirits are represented at the festival. Specialty and other handmade crafts are represented as the festival features makers of salsas to soaps and olive products to local artists’ creations in wood and other mediums are also available. But that’s only half the fun: there are live demonstrations, radio broadcasts, door prizes offered and fun for everyone. What a great way to spend a Saturday, relaxing, eating and just having a great time in Dripping Springs. The Dripping with Taste Festival is held at the 160,000-square foot, covered Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center, just off Ranch Road 12 North, with plenty of room to enjoy the country air, visit all of the vendors, eat to your heart’s delight and savor the flavors of wine, beer and spirits.
