Celebrating National Arts & Humanities Month Art Lives. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of
National Arts and Humanities Month in October, Artomatic comes to Prince George’s. One of the most anticipated exhibitions in the region–Artomatic–(October 30-December 12) is an arts festival of unparalleled presence and incredible participation across the region. Partnering with Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning, the annual non-profit arts festival returns with a sixweek long exhibit in Hyattsville, Md. Transforming empty open spaces into vibrant artistic expression, more than 1,700 artists showcase their creative work in visual art, music, film, performance and fashion in this unjuried, free event that draws more than 70,000 visitors (www.artomatic.org). According to Artomatic: “Every night of the event, thousands of people visit to discover new art, grab a drink, listen to music, go on dates, and mingle with the creative community. No matter what kind of creative events you like, you’ll find something to like at Artomatic.” But the arts and humanities are not limited to a single venue or brackets on a calendar. The Prince George’s Philharmonic is celebrating 50 years of classical music this season. Since its early days in Bowie, Md. in 1965, the Philharmonic has offered season after season of thrilling concert performances. The new Performing Arts Center at Bowie State University opened in 2012 as a $70 million state of the art performance facility. And further north, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s season includes events from Intimate Apparel and the
UMD Repertoire Orchestra: Rainbow Body to Camille A. Brown & Dancers. The Gateway Arts District in Prince George's County encompasses the neighborhoods of Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Hyattsville. The arts and humanities come to life with shopping, entertainment and restaurants along with art studios and galleries. Catch pumpkin and fall festivals: the seventh annual American Indian Festival, Bowie International Festival, the Maryland Renaissance Festival and the Greenbelt Rhythm and Drum Festival. Also, consider 3D art at the Sidewalk Arts Festival. Always fun, Oktoberfest is at Hard Bargain Farm in Accokeek, MD, and there’s an animal lover version, Oktobearfest at The Maryland Zoo. Enjoy outdoor performances while the weather’s still kind. Find your way to the The Mystery Plays –Theater in the Woods in Accokeek, Md. More this month: Enter the dark side when you step into Laurel’s House of Horror in Laurel or gather the family for FrightFest at Six Flags America in Bowie/Mitchellville. Don’t say you weren’t warned. Don a mask and enjoy Masquerade Tea in Laurel, Md. Enjoy the playhouses with performances such as Sweeney Todd and The Music Man. Get some comic relief and laughter as Mo'Nique and Margaret Cho pack the house. Art lives in many forms. Turn the pages and discover.
