HISTORY

DEEP ROOTS

Historical Shiner, Texas SHINER IS AT THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 90A AND STATE HIGHWAY 95, FOURTEEN MILES WEST OF HALLETTSVILLE IN WESTERN LAVACA COUNTY.

I

n the valley between the Lavaca and Guadalupe rivers, Shiner began as an Indian settlement called “Half Moon.” It was a place of ranchers and cattle, the railroad and Indians, outlaws and Texas Rangers -- and cotton was “King.” Texas roots run deep in Shiner, Texas. George West, one of the first to drive cattle in this part of Texas, was married to a Shiner - and Henry B. Shiner donated the land for the town of Shiner to have its start in 1887.

In 1885, a post office called Half Moon was opened at a trading post near the present site of Shiner. When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway came to the area in 1887, it bypassed Half Moon and built through land owned by Henry B. Shiner. Shiner donated 250 acres for a right-of-way and depot, and a town soon grew around the new transportation facilities. At first, the community was called New Half Moon, but in 1888 its name was changed to Shiner. Shiner was incorporated in 1890, and L.P. Amsler was elected the first mayor.

Czech and German immigrants soon became the dominant ethnic groups, and Shiner developed a cohesive Czech community through social organizations such as the National Sokol Society and the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. The population was reported at 2,213 in 1986. The town supports a weekly newspaper, the Gazette, which was established in 1892. The most important agricultural products are dairy and beef cattle, cotton, and corn.

ATTRACTIONS

For the last several years, Shiner’s Annual Half Moon Holidays celebration has been located in Green-Dickson Park during the 4th of July holiday weekend. Craft and food booths, barbecue cook-off, live music, parade, and washer tournament are all part of the festivities, followed by the Spoetzl Brewery Fireworks Spectacular. The park is located at 65 Co Rd 350.

The Edwin Wolters Memorial Museum is an outstanding legacy of Shiner’s history. Its displays include an antique gun collection, old-time country store, dinosaur bones, embroidery and hand stitchery collections, a delightful doll display, musical instruments, an implement shed, and many other interesting antiques. The Wolters Museum is located at 306 South Avenue I and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every second and fourth Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m. and online at www.woltersmuseum.org.

reen-Dickson Municipal Park is a 148-acre facility located at the northwest edge of town. The park features children’s playgrounds, covered picnic areas with barbecue pits, lighted tennis and volleyball courts, fishing, a first class baseball/softball complex and an enclosed pavilion with an air-conditioned dining and kitchen facility. There are also several spaces for overnight camping (RV’s only) with hookups.

First opened in 1895, the Louis Ehlers Cigar Factory produced three favorite cigars, the “Becky Brown,” “Katy Lee,” and “Good Company.” These historic buildings, including the offices of the Shiner Chamber of Commerce, are located at 817 N. Avenue E/Hwy 90-A, directly across the street from the old City Hall.

One of Shiner’s real jewels is the Catholic Church. Blessed under the names of Saints Cyril and Methodius, two missionaries who first brought Christianity to Bohemia and Moravia, the church is truly an awe-inspiring sight. Dedicated in 1921, the red brick Romanesque Revival style architecture features a majestic altar, painted murals, beautiful statues, and astonishing stained glass windows imported from Bavaria. In 1994, a total renovoation of the church began with the bell tower being repaired and a stained glass window of the Good Shepherd installed above the main entrance at the front of the church. as one of the most eye-catching landmarks in South Central Texas, drawing visitors from around the world who stop regularly to photograph and tour the church. Its beauty is enhanced by six stained glass windows and a huge mural of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane which overlooks the altar. The church is located at 306 S Ave F, Shiner.

The one-square-block Welhausen Park is located just a block west of downtown Shiner on Ave. E (Hwy 90-A). It features an historic bandstand, children’s playground and various monuments describing Shiner’s historic past. The picturesque setting is reminiscent of yesteryear America and beautiful when decorated with a holiday lighting display beginning December 1. Welhausen Park features a series of plaques, monuments, and historical markers. There is even a howitzer cannon on display, as well as a time capsule buried onsite. The park is open year-round for locals and visitors to the area. Street parking is free, but there are not any services or restrooms.

The Shiner Chamber of Commerce is housed in part of the Cigar Factory.

Built new in the late 1990’s, the Shiner Public Library, also known as the Hoffie & Lank Wolters Shiner Public Library, offers books, magazines, and free Internet access to Shiner residents. The building also includes a public meeting room used for art and music exhibits as well as cultural events.

The Shiner Public Library is located at 115 E 2nd Street, just one block off of Avenue E/Hwy 90-A.

One of Shiner’s real jewels is the Catholic Church.

The Gaslight Theatre, Shiner’s first Opera House lives again.

Originally the setting for plays, balls, political debates, church socials, town meetings and “social hops,” the Opera House claimed a center of Shiner’s social life from 1895 until 1927.

Today, the Gaslight Theatre is known for its outstanding amateur productions held three times a year. Call the Box Office at 361-594-2079 for reservations and information about upcoming performances. Their address is 207 East 7th Street in downtown Shiner.

SHINER’S GIBLET RICE GIBLET RICE Although everyone adjusts the recipe to make their giblet rice their very own, this is a basic recipe to get you started.

• 1 cup uncooked rice • 2 cups chicken stock (or chicken soup base mixed with 2 cups water) • chicken giblets from one stewing chicken, chopped • 1 small onion, chopped • 1 small green peppper, chopped • 3 cloves garlic, chopped fine • 1/2 cup melted butter • salt and pepper to taste

Bring broth to boil over medium heat in heavy saucepan. Add uncooked rice, giblets, onion, celery, pepper, garlic and butter. Lower heat and cover, leaving lid slightly vented for steam to escape. Cook rice thoroughly, about 25-30 minutes.

Taste for doneness. Season to taste.

Although the stories told of the origins of Shiner’s famous giblet rice may differ from town to town in the area, its appeal is something that no one can argue.

Giblet rice is unique. ago, when we first started making it in 30-gallon kettles, you could cook a kettle’s worth of giblet rice for about $50. Over the years, the price has gone up, but it’s still a pretty easy and inexpensive side dish for a benefit plate.”

Having worked local fundraisers for over thirty years, David has decided to take a step back and pass on the tradition to the next generation.

“I’ve cooked a lot of it over the last 30 years,” shared David. “There’s a lot of people here that cook it. I started in the pits, but I wanted to move inside to the kettle room. The old timers had been doing it for many years before me and I learned from those guys. I’ve kind of retired from doing the big benefits. I was doing it two to three weekends a month, cooking for over 60,000 people a year, and it gets tough after a while. I’m passing it on to the younger generation, teaching them, and keeping the Shiner giblet rice tradition alive. It’s a great way to get together with people and have a good time with a little bit of work involved. Whoever shows up and wants to help, we’re hoping to teach them.”

A

unique store where patrons will find that every item is made in Texas, Bluestem of Shiner was founded by shop-owners Ross and Patricia Tieken to afford local artists, artisans and craftsmen a way to market their wares to the public.

“Years ago, I worked on the Shiner Main Street Committee,” said Ross. “I interviewed several artists in the area and every single one said the reason they don’t sell their art is because they have no place to sell it. We started carrying different artists – what we defined as local – and then shifted to offering the opportunity to the entire state of Texas.”

The variety of items that Bluestem carries run the gamut from jewelry to jelly and wine to T-shirts.

This Texas-only store carries something for everyone.

“We are always looking for new artists,” added Ross. “It is a never-ending search for different items that can be brought into the store. Our customers like to see something different every time they come in. We have jewelry, pens, leatherworks, paintings, pottery, wind chimes, soaps, fresh cheese, a wide variety of Texas wines, using exclusively Texas grapes, and even mantels.”

A woodworker by trade, Ross also uses Bluestem as a way to display his own furniture. Concerned that Patricia might be bored, the Tiekens installed a commercial kitchen, something they both could use. Patricia, known far and wide for her baking, prepares sweet pies on Fridays and Ross bakes their popular cinnamon rolls every Saturday, along with some type of bread.

“I am the only thing in here that isn’t from Texas,” Patricia shared with a laugh. “Plus, I have no artistic ability at all. My role is to bake and run the store, doing the ordering and inventory. During

the week, I make food for the freezer. These are meals that people can take home like chicken pot pies and casseroles. And the first Saturday of every month, Ross and I make New York style bagels that we offer in seven different varieties.”

And if a store full of Texas-based items, baked goods and homemade meals wasn’t enough, the Tiekens also offer grass-fed beef and heritage pork from their own farm.

FUN & ADVENTURE ooking for a thrilling adventure? Shiner Escape Room puts players in a real-life game where they must work together in a race against the clock to solve a series of increasingly challenging puzzles. Participants should be prepared to have their wits tested and entertainment level raised when they prepare to enter the best escape room in the area.

Founded by Wayne Denson, Shiner Escape Rooms was born from a love of escape rooms that he shares with his daughter, Katie.

“It’s kind of our thing,” said Denson. “My daughter and I have played many escape rooms together. Between us both, we’ve played over 200 rooms in five different states. We enjoy it so much that, in 2019, we decided that Shiner needed that kind of entertainment.”

Denson writes all of the story lines and comes up with the challenges that players will face in each of the four scenarios he currently has in play at Shiner Escape Room.

lways the first Sunday in December, patrons delight in music, tables of treats, and festive lights at Christmas in the Park. Visits with Santa Claus promise to instill the Christmas Spirit in the heart of even the most stubborn Scrooge.

The annual Christmas celebration features holiday music performed by local choirs and bands. Upon his arrival in Shiner, Santa Claus is escorted from the Shiner Fire Station to the park on the Shiner Chamber of Commerce’s royalty float. Patrons are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and arrive early.

SHINER VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT’S ANNUAL COOK-OFF AND CAR SHOW AT GREEN-DICKSON PARK

ach year the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department turns up the heat at Green-Dickson Park in April with their annual CookOff and Car Show. Their main fundraiser of their year, this event helps the completely volunteer organization offset operating expenses, purchase new equipment, and, currently, fund the construction of a new fire station.

“Our cook-off includes contests for pork spare ribs, half chicken, brisket, and jackpot beans,” said Shiner Volunteer Fire Department Chief Billy Petru. “We give half the calcutta back to the entrants for first, second and third placements.”

In conjunction with the cook-off, automotive enthusiasts will want to hang around for the car show Saturday.

“The show runs from 8 a.m. until judging at noon,” added Petru. “There’s also a mini-tractor pull in the afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m., brought to us by the Texas Minirod Tractor Pullers Association.”

Although the event evolves from year to year, there is typically live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Attendees can also participate in a 5k walk/run, a kids fishing tournament in the park, and a washer tournament.

“And, as a special feature for both the young and young at heart, we have helicopters fly in and land in the park,” shared Petru.

“They give the kids tours. They have so much fun climbing in and out of the helicopters.”

SHINER TRADITION alf Moon Holidays grew out of a tradition established many years ago by a downtown Fourth of July parade, with pictures of the parade dating as far back as 1904. In the ‘70s, the event evolved as a fundraiser for the hospital and was named Half Moon Holidays.

From dancehall to local diner SUNKEN GARDENS WELCOMES HUNGRY DINERS FOR LUNCH

local hotspot and favorite among travelers, Sunken Gardens’ owner Travis Maeker doesn’t take credit for the restaurant’s success.

He’s quick to tell you that the real backbone of the restaurant is actually his mother, Kay Villalpando.

“It’s all her ideas, her deal, her vision,” shared Maeker.

“Her idea was to serve the type of food to her diners that she serves her family. Momma is a foodie. She’s very strict about food and only uses what’s fresh. She’s even particular about the oils she uses – butter, olive oil, peanut oil and coconut are the only oils in the building. And there’s no high fructose corn syrup, well, unless you have a Coca Cola with your lunch.”

“I traveled to Brazil,” added Maeker. “This type of restaurant where people weigh their food is very common, kilo restaurants. It allows our diners to try a lot of different things from the buffet and pay for only what they want, what they take. It’s a very interesting concept where you can try a lot of different things and pay one price. It reminds me of eating at a family reunion.”

And speaking of family, Maeker carries a lot of history in the diner. His grandparents used to sell tickets and two-step across the floor of this former dancehall turned restaurant. Today, with a focus on food quality, Sunken Gardens now has a reputation in the area for fresh ingredients and homestyle goodness.

“Customers are extremely loyal, and it amazes me how far people come from to eat here,” said Maeker.

“A lot of restaurants want to focus on so many things besides food, developing staff, training them properly, atmosphere. That’s’ difficult when you face a lot of turnover, as well. We focus solely on the food and we’ve been very successful with that tactic. We don’t have a lot of fancy furniture or a brand new building. Our mission is to provide high quality whole foods, without preservatives or chemicals. ometimes the only way to truly experience a town is to spend some time outdoors and that’s exactly what campers love the most about Shiner Boggy Creek RV Park. Proudly situated across the street from Shiners’ iconic Green-Dickson Park, campers can easily enjoy acres of rolling hills, a fishing lake, and casual walking trails.

“We’re quite proud of our country setting,” said Jane Kalina, who owns and operates Shiner Boggy Creek RV Park along with her husband, David. “We’re close to town, but we also enjoy the quiet here. We have Pete and Pearl, our mules, and there’s cows in the pasture next door. All of the campers really appreciate the quiet. And, because so many people travel with their puppies, having the park across the street is great for them to walk down and use the trails and playground.”

Although the Kalina’s didn’t originally plan to fall in love with the RV park, that’s exactly what happened in the long run.

“I had been working in Austin and my husband was running a tractor business,” shared Jane. “We retired and needed something to do, so I researched businesses.

You know the saying, ‘Build it and they will come?’ Well, they did. I had no experience in the RV campground, but we discovered we really enjoyed the business.

The people we have met and forged friendships with over the years have made it really enjoyable. For example, our first customer is still here after nine years! He’s from Louisiana and, when we’ve had five or six customers from Louisiana here, they love a good crawfish boil. We have one annually for all of the RV guests.”

Jane is quick to attest that, without her husband, Shiner Boggy Creek RV Park wouldn’t run as smoothly as it does.

“David is my jack-of-all-trades guy,” added Jane. “With campers, you never know what is going to happen. He helps anyone that has an issue, and he can fix anything. We’re fortunate that he can do that, he can always figure things out.”

More than a campground, Jane is proud to offer facilities that locals can use as well.

“The public rents the clubhouse for showers, kid’s parties, and more,” said Jane.

“It’s a great space that people can use, complete with laundry and showers, and it stays pretty busy. In fact, with 29 sites, we both stay pretty busy. Although both my husband and I are retirement age, I told him that we’re going to hang on to the RV park as long as we can – it keeps us busy, and I enjoy it.”

Their annual Kolache Festival every September offers a full day of family entertainment. The day starts off with the Kolache Fest Parade on the town square, then moves to the Hallettsville Knights of Columbus Hall for the domino tournament, kolache bake-off, polka music, arts and crafts booths, kolaches and more!

YOAKUM – It’ll take you a mere 14 minutes to get to Yoakum and it’ll be worth your drive. Plan your visit around the Tom Tom Festival the first weekend in June, the Yoakum Birthday Bash the last Saturday in July, or Christmas on Grand the first weekend in December. The Yoakum Heritage Museum’s Gala is in September, St. Joseph Catholic Church Gala is in February and their popular Church Picnic is always the first weekend in August.
