Message /// From the Publisher

Happy Holidays! I love the winter season. Even though here in Florida we don’t see much of the changes that let us know that the winter season is near, such as the change of colors of the leaves and the chilly air sending us to get our warm wear. But non-the-less, we enjoy this season with fabulous Nutcracker performances, lots of Holiday treats and fun Tea Parties. Dr. Kathleen Davenport, take stock on the difficult times we are facing with tragedies happening all around us. She urges us to continue to focus on our dancing as a way of healing in her article “Disaster Dancing”. Staff writer Jenne Vermes always remembers the essentials of giving during the holiday season. Don’t know what to get your favorite dancer this year? Have a look at the ‘Five Gift Ideas for Dancers”. As our Tap Technique Advisor, Jenne, shares her insight on proper “Musicality” understanding for the tap dancers. With the holidays around the corner, we are all working to look our best, The Kate Effect, Kate Corallo, is on target with her advice on getting healthy white teeth the natural way; Simple, easy suggestions to brighten your smile for the holidays. We have this misconception that it take courage to make big decisions in life, when in reality it’s the little every day moment by moment decisions are the ones that matter the most. Read, Natasha Felix’s journey in her realization of the act of “Courage”.

7x7. 7x7 features seven dances, each seven minutes long, by seven different choreographers, all set to original scores by composer David Brazzeal. The dances are performed multiple times, viewed each time by a roving, different docent-lead group. Due to the unique format of the evening, last year’s audience enthusiasm was palpable. “Changing locations and performers every few minutes kept everyone completely engaged,” gushes Vencel. The evening is designed to present dance in vastly different locations while also showcasing the nooks and crannies of the historic 81-year-old Memorial Presbyterian Church. The fluid acrylic paintings of artist Jaci Jackson will be on display an hour before the 7x7 performances begin. Originally from South Africa, Jackson says her work is “about using the chaos and unpredictability of fluid art to create works that are as dramatic as they are peaceful.” Artwork will be available for purchase. Audience members are invited to arrive early and stay afterward for a small reception with all of the artists. Admission is DIY—pay what you can. A portion of the proceeds will go to charity. These dancers attended nationally renowned dance programs that included Move the Initiative, Joffrey Ballet School NY/LA, Art of Movement, Broadway Dance Center, Modas Dance, and PeriDance Center. The 2017 Nationals in Orlando at the Embassy Suites was also quite an event. The sold out weekend brought many talented dancers and schools to the stage. Disaster Dancing /// Doctors Advice

Reading and watching the news these days can make dancing seem a little irrelevant. What is the point of a perfect plie when our neighbors in Puerto Rico have no water? But this is exactly the time when art, expression, and physical activity are the most important. How are we to take care of our neighbors if we have not taken care of ourselves and have nothing to give? How can we give a shoulder to cry on if we haven’t strengthened our shoulders? What better way to make others aware of our neighbors’ needs than through art? Dance is unique in that it is activity and art, exercise and expression, sport and statement. While this article specifically addresses the recent hurricanes in our community, these suggestions can also be applicable to any trauma such as injury, loss, and life events. Teachers and studio owners after a disaster have the responsibility to take care of their students while also having the added stress of ensuring the studio is safe, has electricity, and students are physically able to return. Similarly, parents are working to return their children’s lives to a level of normalcy while potentially contending with home damage, work disruption, and

www.DanznMagazine.com

limited basic essentials. While creating a safe physical environment, there is a need to create a welcoming and healing emotional environment. After a natural disaster, a family may have lost a home, lost contact with family members, or lost something as simple as a favorite tree. These emotions of loss and isolation can be hard for all families and students, but they may also be the first time our younger students have experienced loss. It can be challenging to know the “best way to navigate through a post-disaster environment, both emotionally and physically. First, try to return to a sense of normalcy and routine as quickly as possible. Returning to familiarity is helpful if there are other areas of life far from “normal. Second, be open to sharing times, if appropriate, in class. Sometimes it is more efficient to have a timed sharing moment during warm up or cool down and then refocus the class rather than fighting a distracted class for the entire time. Lastly, there is a strong desire to be there for dancers as the teacher, studio owner, and/or parent. Know your limits. You cannot be everything to every student in every situation and there may

15

be a time where the students need counseling, intervention, or medical support in addition to the walls of the dance studio. Know what you know, but also know what you don’t know. Students returning to class may have difficulty focusing. Returning to a routine can feel welcoming and restorative, but can also feel pointless and distracting. The challenge is that each student has unique needs, not just in technique training but also in their emotional lives. An open expressive environment like a dance class can be the road to recovery, healing, reaching the new normal. Providing space for expression while providing stability in structure provide an environment to build strength. Finding a balance between providing structure, strength, athleticism and allowing expression, artistry, and imagination is the gift that dance provides. The road after a loss can be winding and confusing, but it tends to go through basic stages. These stages include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. They do not necessarily occur in a singular or linear order. Each person processes and moves through these stages in their unique way and in their own timing. Dance and dance education can support these stages, the individual, and the community as the road to recovery progresses. As dancers, we do not function in isolation and bringing life experiences into our art can provide a richness and fullness to movement. Loss can provide inspiration for artistry, expression, and growth. In short, the perfect plie can be the exact treatment needed to start down the long road after loss.

Five Gift Ideas/// Holiday Giving

A Dancer’s Holiday Wish list Five perfect gift ideas for dancers by Jenne Vermes Staff Writer The Holidays are here and with all of the excitement of family time, delicious food and of course, The Nutcracker, dancers can have a pretty full schedule this time of year. One of the staples of the holiday season is the tradition of gift-giving, and as such, every dancer would do well to be prepared with a list of items that would both bring joy to their lives and benefit them in their art. I asked dancers at companies, studios and schools around Florida what they would most want for the holidays as a dancer, and the list was extensive! I’ve compiled the research and narrowed it down a bit, and came up with this list of five great gifts dancers can ask for and/or receive for the holidays.

1.Shoes One of the biggest expenses dancers and dance parents have throughout the year is shoes. Not only are they expensive to purchase, but with the wear and tear accumulated on them in short amounts of time, it can really add up. Asking for shoes as gifts can save a good deal of money over time, and also give dancers the chance to ask for different kinds of shoes like custom colored tap shoes or new styles of ballet shoes that will make them more exciting as a gift.

2. Workshops and Dance Classes One of the most important things dancers need regularly is training, especially dancers that are professionals or are aspiring to become professionals in the future. Weekend workshops, special pop-up classes, tuition for more classes at their studio or school, and summer intensive funds are perfect gifts for dancers of all types. A gift like this can help students branch out and learn from new teachers as well as travel to dance with companies and conservatories they may otherwise not have the opportunity to.

3. Dancewear and dancewear gift certificates Leotards. Tights. Shorts. Skirts. Leg warmers and warm-ups. The list is endless for dance clothes that dancers need and want. Shopping for these items can be fun as there is a great variety of each type of clothing item when it comes to design, color and style; however, gift certificates work well by allowing the dancer to choose the style and color that fits them best. Moreover, studios and schools may have specific class and dress code requirements that gift-givers may not know about when purchasing dancewear. Whether giving a gift card or just a really great outfit, this gift is a surefire win for both the giver and the recipient.

4. Practice Tools Outside of class, many dancers spend a good deal of time working on stretches and strength training exercises in order to maximize their performance in class and on stage. Great gift ideas that help dancers work on their skills and technique outside of class include stretch bands, resistance bands, foot stretchers, foot rollers, yoga mats and more.

5. Photography sessions A gift of a photography session is very useful for dancers that are embarking on the transition into the college and professional world. Headshots and bodyline photos are often asked for as part of audition packets, and having a set of professionally done dance photos can be used to help social media profiles look more professional for dancers trying to gain notability. There are local photographers in every area that offer headshot and dance photography packages, but be sure to do your research in choosing the one that fits your budget and desires best. Good tips for finding respectable photographers include asking studios for recommendations and looking through dance magazines to see who is submitting photos that you like. Holiday gift-giving is enjoyable and brings a wonderful spirit to the season. Choosing gifts to ask for as a dancer, or to give dancers, that can aid in their practice and performance hit the marks on both practicality and indulgence.

Tap Technique /// Musicality

Tap Technique Talk: Musicality By Jenne Vermes Staff Writer

Tap dance is an art form that is so unique and special in many ways, but one of the most important distinctions between tap dance and many other forms of movement is the fact that tap dancers have to be skilled musicians as well and use these skills at the same time as they execute the movement. Other types of dance

November/December2017 . Danz’n

that also require this feat include clogging, Irish Step, body percussion and more. Every dance has to have musicality, but tap dancers and other dancers who fully incorporate sound in their movement have to be both dancers and musicians at the same time. This is no easy task. One of the most

. The Community Dance Magazine

30

repeated lessons I give in my tap classes is to stress the execution of the steps with correct timing and that it should fit with the music as if the dancer is simply another instrument in the band. Even if and especially if the tap dancer is performing without music (a cappella) the responsibility to maintain musical structure and steady

www.DanznMagazine.com

tempo is paramount. Being precisely on beat is as important to a tap dancer as being precisely in line throughout the body is for a ballet dancer. The movement/music does not work well without precision. Dancers can train their musicality and rhythm skills in several ways. First, emphasizing rhythmic precision in practice is key. Practicing exercises and steps is an important part of honing skills for any variety of dancer, and one of the best ways to work on musicality while executing steps is to practice the steps in rhythm. Strive for getting both the step and the rhythm right instead of just mastering the step and moving on without giving it a musical context. If a dancer has mastered the movement in a step but cannot control it musically and rhythmically to fit into the beat, they still have more work to do in the practice room. Another way to work on musician skills as a tapper is to take music classes. Whether it’s music theory (learning about things like notes and meter) or actually learning how to play an instrument like the piano or flute, taking music lessons from musicians and music teachers gives tap dancers valuable training and insight into how to make music with their instrument…their feet. Combining music and movement becomes easier to do when you train both aspects of the craft. One of the most common notes that tap dancers receive from judges at competitions is that they need to work on staying on beat. Many tappers who are judges use the phrase “Be in the pocket of the music,” which basically means that you want to fit into the groove of the song, you want your steps to become a part of the rhythm and beat in the music. When a tap dancer’s sounds are not exactly with the music it creates something called rhythmic dissonance. Dissonance occurs in music when notes that are not in harmony with each other are played at the same time. (Think about hitting three piano keys that are right next to each other at the same time and it creates an unpleasant sound). Rhythmic dissonance occurs when this happens in the rhythm of the song, i.e. if two people were clapping at the same time but not in sync with each other. Tap dancers need to strive to be in the pocket of the music as much as possible in order to keep the groove of the song going uninterrupted. Musicality in movement is an important skill for all varieties of dancers to hone, as it ensures that the movement and the music work in harmony with each other at every performance. Even when there is no music, creating musicality in movement allows the audience to stay in the moment with the dancer(s) and understand the flow of what they are watching on stage. Learning how to match rhythm and tempo, practicing steps and movements with rhythm, and understanding musical ideas like meter and time signature are important for all dancers, but especially for the dancers who make music along with their movement. Tap shoes, clogging shoes, Irish hard shoes or jig shoes and any other type of dancewear or tools that make sound aren’t just shoes and props; they are instruments which dancers should strive to play artistically, musically and skillfully.

Personal Development /// Courage

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ~ Nelson Mandela Courage is the blind man daring to leave his house on his own to take care of everyday errands; trusting that his long cane will warn him of danger ahead and that there will be one or two good hearted strangers looking out for him when crossing the street, or while making his way down subway stairs. I give this example, because when we think of courage, we tend to think of grand gestures; like someone running into a burning building to rescue people they usually don’t even know. But that morning, as I was walking through the subway, and saw that blind man making his way around, I couldn’t help but think to myself; “now this is the example of everyday, unrecognized courage”. This man had the courage to leave the safety and comfort of his home, with all of its familiar surroundings, to go out onto the very busy streets of Manhattan and take the subway no less. Here was a man who chose courage over fear; to live life to its fullest and not quit because life had dealt him a bad hand.

November/December 2017 . Danz’n

. The Community Dance Magazine

He was an elderly man, with his backpack over his shoulders, moving his long cane from side to side, slowly making his way through the subway. While the act of taking care of everyday personal errands usually doesn’t rank high on the courage meter, in his case it does, because his blindness just added a component that we hardly ever consider when going to the grocery store. I can only imagine the insecurity he could be feeling, unsure of what to expect; fear for his own safety while out on the streets. That ranks pretty high on the courage meter if you ask me. He was daring to be independent. I saw strength. I saw courage. I was inspired. Inspired to be more courageous myself. I realized that courage isn’t always about standing up for someone else. Sometimes being courageous means standing up for me! And courage isn’t always about standing up for yourself against someone else, but sometimes it’s the courage like I was inspired by today; which is the courage to face your fears and do the little things that will propel your life

forward, little by little; like that elderly blind man I saw that Friday morning.

allow to win? The fear or the dream? It’s really that simple. Is fear real? Absolutely. But so is the dream, whatever that dream may be.

Personal everyday courage is waking up 20 minutes earlier to study, or exercise or to prepare a healthy breakfast.

Pursuing the dream can be scary, makes your heart race, palms in full-sweat mode, legs shaking; but ooohhh that feeling of being alive, the goosebumps of possibility.

Courage to choose to focus on the solution, instead of whining about the problem;

Taking the first step, is like being on a roller coaster ride, just at that precise moment where the fear has morphed into total exhilaration and you start to enjoy the ride. The roller coaster is still going fast, and there are certain dips and twists on the “ride” where fear rears its head and you’re tempted to grab hold of its hands, but then you realize; “I got this. I’m going to be fine. I can do this”. And then before you know it, the ride is over and you think to yourself “THAT WAS AWESOME. What was I afraid of? Let’s do it again!”

The courage to act on a dream, even if there’s a chance you may fail. Ultimately, you never regret the actions you took, even if they resulted in failure. You do regret the ones you didn’t take, always wondering if the results would have been successful. It’s the courage to be you, and not what anyone else wants or expects you to be.

I believe that if we nurture our ability to be courageous for ourselves with the little things when no one is watching, it will grow into being courageous for others.

The courage to step up and focus on the future and not wallow in past mistakes, misfortunes or self-pity. The courage to put your differences aside and choose to work together instead of fight each other.

Live Daringly The courage to recognize that being right isn’t nearly as important as treasuring your relationships.

Natasha Felix Personal Development Coach

And most importantly the courage to trust yourself. Courage is about doing it even if you’re afraid. What will you

Reading Room /// So You Want to Be a Ballet Dancer?

“Going for Gold –“There can be so many rewarding benefits but also innumerable disadvantages connected to the world of competing in dance. When I was growing up, my teacher never really proposed to her students the idea of competing formally. It seemed that for her, ballet was strictly a performance art, not a competitive sport. To be sure, the nature of the dance world at that time was different. Generally speaking little emphasis was placed on ballet competitions, and the prestigious ones that did exist were few and far between. Nowadays, competing has become commonplace, and many students believe that if they don’t participate and compete, they will find themselves at a disadvantage when the time comes to secure a job. As far as my experience has demonstrated, however, there is no need to worry. There are many professional ballet dancers, including myself, who continue to make fantastic careers for themselves and have never participated in a formal competition. What competitions don’t guarantee is success. Young dancers should understand that if the idea of competing seems unattractive, several other roads can lead to scholarships and careers. The notion of formally competing at anything has always made my stomach turn. Though I absolutely love to perform, I can’t stand the thought of being technically scrutinized and judged for a score. When I turned sixteen, my teacher surprisingly suggested that I enroll in the Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland. She warned that I should have no expectations -- this would be just for “the experience.” I dutifully agreed, but truthfully the very idea of being in that scenario scared me to death. The trip turned out to be costly, and given the level of my dancing at the time, chances are I would not have made it very far in the competition. Ultimately we decidNovember/December 2017 . Danz’n

ed against it. Relief! I could breathe again. Looking back, I know that had I in fact made it there, my insecurities would surely have gotten the better of me. Nevertheless, my destiny was scripted. The following year I leisurely attended one of the many open auditions being held at SAB; just for the experience, with no expectations. It was for a young Balanchine-based company then on the rise called the Miami City Ballet. The rest is history. Students, teachers, and parents should discuss together whether competing is a challenge that a young dancer is ready for and willing to tackle. Competing does provide a great forum to exhibit technical strength, and it allows students the chance to size themselves up against other students in the same age range from around the world. It is a great way to get a realistic idea of where one stands and how much, how quickly, and in what areas one may need to improve. If a dancer is confident of being able to perform at a high level, then competing can be a fantastic way to get noticed by the dance world at large. It also provides one with objective feedback from some new sets of eyes. Dancers who compete well may even come home with a medal -- the standard gold, silver, or bronze. Additional acknowledgment prizes are also awarded, such as for the strongest overall performance or best in any given age group. Major school and company directors are often judging or in attendance, and separate scholarships (and even apprentice/trainee positions) are awarded to exceptional competitors, offering a wideopen door to the beginnings of a career. As always, along with all of the positives come downsides that one must be sure of being equipped to handle. Being judged can trigger intense feelings of pressure and stress. One must put oneself in a professionals state of mind, which is easi-

-- Ballet Competitions” er said than done. Criticism can be harsh, and though it is not meant as a personal attack, it can still be painful. To stand their ground, competitors need to give more than 100 percent and be ready to handle major disappointment. It may turn out that even the best of efforts are simply not enough. Surprises may also present themselves; competitions are notorious for having slippery performance and rehearsal floors, and dancers usually have little time to get acclimated to the performance space. The size of the stage may be very different than in the space where one has rehearsed, and adjusting quickly to the lighting and wing space may prove challenging. One must arrive mentally prepared to focus internally, adapt quickly to a new environment, accept criticism, and tune out distractions to be truly free to perform at one’s best.

Tip: If you do decide to compete, make sure to have all solo variations and pas de deux (steps for two) you plan to perform extremely well-rehearsed. Selections should accentuate your best qualities and also establish your versatility. Do be cautious of over-rehearsing. Try not to focus on one small series of steps from a solo or on specific tricks to only one side. Doing so can ultimately be detrimental; it can create imbalances in technique and development and can also lead to injury. At the end of your preparatory period, a piece should feel comfortable, well prepared, and finely tuned but still fresh and exciting.”

This is also the only Nutcracker in Sarasota with Live Music, as The Sarasota Ballet is accompanied by the Sarasota Orchestra. 15 - 16 December 2017 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. VENUE: Van Wezel Performing Arts
