YOU SHOULD KNOW Pray On Eat Best, Leave the Rest Eating healthy isn’t complicated. It basically boils down to eating lots of vegetables, fruits and whole grains and limiting your red meat. It’s also best to limit processed foods, sugary drinks and partially hydrogenated oils. And, be sure to keep your calorie intake balanced with your needs and activity level. Don’t eat too many, but don’t eat too few either.

Activity Fuels More Activity Exercise doesn’t just control weight. It also combats negative health conditions, improves mood, boosts energy, promotes better sleep and can even enhance intimacy. When done right, it just makes you feel good. The key is to find something fun to do so you’ll keep doing it. Go for walks, take a dance class, join a team or simply play with your kids. It doesn’t matter, just do something.

Early to Bed, Early to Rise Sleep is essential to healthy growth in children. It also supports a strong immune system, a healthy balance of the hormones, and the healing and repair of the heart and blood vessels. Too little sleep increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes, not to mention depression, memory loss, bad grades and accidents. Out of everything we can do for our health, sleep is the most important. And it’s the easiest and cheapest too!

Attitude is Everything No joke. A positive attitude can add years to your life. In separate studies spanning 15-16 years, it was found that among 6000 plus participants, those with higher levels of emotional vitality had lower rates of cardiovascular disease and lower likelihoods of having a stroke. But don’t let that depress you; instead be inspired to be more optimistic. How? Identify negative thinking and focus on positive thinking. It’ll take some time and effort, but the more you do it, the easier it gets.

A Loving Life Together It has been shown through studies that people in a romantic/committed relationship are happier, more satisfied in life, and tend to have less stress or depression. Evidently, having a dependable partner helps you feel less isolated and better able to cope and manage life’s stressors. How about a “thank you sweetie!”

There’s no denying the benefits of prayer on personal health. There have been numerous scientific studies to prove it. Of course, prayer cannot be directly observed so many studies focus on the relaxation response prayer has on the body, similar to meditation. But there are plenty citing evidence that religious people who pray not only get sick less often, they recover faster when they do. Plus, there’s the whole praying for others thing that, studies show, works too. Not familiar with prayer? You can simply sit in silence and quiet the mind — the effects appear to be the same. A wide variety of spiritual practices have been shown to help alleviate stress levels, which are one of the major risk factors for disease. They also are powerful ways to maintain a positive outlook and successfully weather the trials which come to all of us in life. Hmmm, prayers for world peace would be nice.

Q. I am anticipating caring for my elderly mother now that my father has passed away. She would need to relocate to Texas from Washington. What is the best way to keep her healthy? She is actually a strong 81 year-old. A. Many older adults may still like to live-out their lives in their own home or possibly in an assisted living environment with other older adults to build friendships. You will need to have conversations with your wife and your mom, regarding her care, financial statuses, etc. Many seniors who own a home may sell their homes to fund the move. You may want to do your own research on local assisted living centers, right here in North Texas, before your conversation. Also, having you to help with your mom’s care could save her from fraud. There has been a lot of financial fraud towards the elderly.

running fo r m y

I

am sweeping my light colored maple kitchen floor, my Triathlon finisher’s medal swinging back and forth in rhythm with the broom. I have showered off the dried salty layer of sweat from my 750 m lake swim, my 20 km bike ride and my 5 km run. What I have not showered off is the three-digit number marked vertically along my left arm or the sense of achievement that is coursing through my body riding the wave of the leftover adrenaline. My eyes keep glancing at the black numbers marked on my skin. I did it. I completed my first sprint triathlon. I feel strong and fit having demolished another mental barrier of my limits. The phone rings and it is my sister-in-law calling to congratulate me on my efforts and ask about the details. I put the broom in the closet and take the portable phone out onto the deck into the warm sunny, June afternoon. I hold the phone against my left ear, my left elbow and my right forearm rest along the railing of the wooden deck. I watch my children, my son who is almost three and my daughter who is almost five playing in the sandbox. My husband is puttering in the yard, staying close to our threeyear-old boy who can sprint to the road faster than any of the athletes that crossed the finish line ahead of me. My sister-in-law is congratulatory and supportive. She has always been one of my biggest fans, no matter the challenge. After I have broken down the three events and expressed my wonder that I was able to do this, she asks,

14

“Why do you do this? Why do you push your body this way?” She is asking out of curiosity tinged with concern not judgment. The same age as me, she is a fit mom who likes to run but not race, so this level of commitment has her bemused. My voice is joking but my words are dead serious. “I am running for my life.” How else can I explain it? The endorphins bring me joy. I need to do something with an end to it, something I can check off my list, something that gives me a medal. Motherhood seems to offer few chances to do that. It is a job that is never complete and for me, it is a job that has meant one medical challenge after another. My motherhood triathlon includes: cancer, a life-threatening allergy, and now, likely an autism diagnosis is coming for my son. I know my sister-in-law is worried that this athleticism is pushing my middle-aged, tired body too hard. Some days I wonder the same. I struggle to explain how this pushing of my body is positive. Painful and tiring at times, yes, but positive. It is unlike the year I pushed my body when caring for my 11-month old daughter who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that required an intense, tortuous treatment. It is unlike living in that hospital room with no window for almost six months. It is unlike how my body managed to carry a pregnancy to term while living in the hospital with my daughter. It is unlike when my infant son, my 20-month old daughter and I all slept in a hospital bed for days upon

days while my husband returned to work to support us. It is unlike breastfeeding a new baby whose small, dark head lay cradled my left elbow while with my right hand I caught vomit with a cardboard fish and chips container as my daughter on chemotherapy retched in bed beside us. It is unlike moving across the country to be close to family when treatment ended so our daughter could have access to family for whatever unknown days she might have. This pushing is good and necessary. This sweating, this exertion is rebuilding my body and my spirit, drained from that year of chemotherapy and the times my daughter almost died. This training sweats away the fear of a relapse, at least for the minutes that I am running, swimming or biking. What I do not say to anyone and what is only a whisper in my soul is that this exercise will make me strong in case I need to guide her through treatment again. If she relapses I know I will need every ounce of strength I can mine from these muscle fibers. The first time through cancer treatment I was naïve. I had no script. My New Balance runners sat ignored in the closet in her hospital room because I did not know that living in a windowless room in a hospital and dealing with daily and sometimes hourly medical crises, would suck all the energy out of me, leaving no motivation for a rejuvenating run. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to eat because we made sure that she was never alone in her hospital bed. One of us was always with her and sometimes that meant we missed the cafeteria. But now I know what childhood cancer looks like and knowing is terrifying. I know that about half the children who come onto that ward will die, not matter what the statistics say. I know some who leave do so with physical or mental handicaps. I know chemotherapy can erase a baby’s lips, replacing them with yellow blisters. I know what it is like to change your baby’s diaper with gloves because her waste is toxic. A baby’s bottom that should be soft and sweet, not dangerous and so chewed up from chemotherapy that it looks like hamburger and hurts when touched. I know that my only hope of surviving in that world again is to build my physical body into an endurance vessel. My dedication to exercise washes away the anger and the fear that builds daily in me as I watch my son slip away from me, when I see his vacant look, when I have to manage a dozen daily tantrums because I cannot understand him. My almost three-year-old son is awaiting an appointment where we fully expect he will be given an autism diagnosis. His speech is delayed or when present it is what is called echolalia. He cannot answer the question what is your name but he can recite full pages of the Toy Story audio book, echoing it back without error. When I say, “Say Alexander.” He repeats, “Say Alexander.” So I swim twice a week, on Tuesday night when my husband can watch the kids and on Saturday morning at seven when I can be home before the family is out of their pajamas. My runs are stolen between my son’s appointments with speech and early intervention and my daughter’s Kindergarten. I put my bike on a training device in my basement so I can ride when kids are in bed. In good weather, I ride with a group of women who only know I’m the woman riding that red specialized mountain bike. In the pool I’m just the mom in the blue, Speedo swim suit, a woman in training just like the rest, training for fun and fitness. Not many of them know I am running for my life. SP Find Your Inner Strength. Sue LeBreton is a freelance journalist who still uses exercise to cope with life’s challenges. She is the author of Parenting Joyfully When our Child Has Diabetes.

EATING DISORDERS

BY C H R I S TA M E L N Y K H I N E S

affecting our teens

F

ueled by anxiety and depression, bullying, sports, and feelings of inadequacy in an appearance-driven culture, eating disorders continue to rise among young people. Early intervention is key to successful treatment, but these life-threatening psychiatric conditions aren’t always immediately obvious or associated with weight loss. It’s such a quiet, insidious illness. An eating disorder can go on for a couple of years before friends, parents or teachers figure it out. According to ANRED, a non-profit online eating disorders resource, anorexia and bulimia primarily affect teens and young adults, but studies now find that children as young as six are suffering from the disorders.

THE RISKS Inadequate nutrition can result in stunted growth especially during puberty, subpar athletic performance and a lack of brain development which hinders academic progress. A restrictive diet also puts kids at increased risk for fractures and bone breaks. If the child suffers from binge eating disorder, she may gain weight. AWARENESS IS KEY Parents, teachers and coaches can help prevent eating disorders through awareness, avoiding mandatory weigh-ins and role modeling a healthy lifestyle. Coaches can be one of the biggest advocates in making sure kids stay healthy by reinforcing how important nutrition is to fuel your body to do the sport accurately and to prevent injuries. A GENDERLESS ILLNESS Eating disorders are most prevalent among girls, but boys are also at risk. Following a difficult divorce with her son’s father, a mom of a nine-year-old noticed signs of an eating disorder marked by distressing nightmares about 16

overeating and a fear of gaining weight. With guidance from her son’s pediatrician and a counselor, she helped him feel less anxious about food. ”It was this assertion, this sense of order of “mom knows best” that helped him feel the world was in control and he didn’t need to try to control his world through food,” his mom says.

DIETING’S SLIPPERY SLOPE Accompanied by compliments and positive attention, weight loss can turn addictive. Most females start off with an ‘innocent’ diet to lose some weight, whereas many males desire to become more muscular and powerful, yet ‘cut’ like a bodybuilder, which is a tricky balance to achieve through nutrition and exercise. It’s important to avoid discussing your child’s weight or size or comparing her weight to her friends. The focus should always be on sustainable lifestyle choices that promote health, yet are realistic. Children and teens are still growing and developing so body weight is not a reliable way to gauge health. PROMOTE OPEN COMMUNICATION Cyber-bullying and cruel remarks from peers about appearance can distort a child’s self-image. Monitor your child’s online activity and establish boundaries like powering off devices at bedtime. Most of all talk and listen to your kids to remain aware of what is happening in their lives. People underestimate how serious eating disorders can really be; some parents think it’s just a phase. The longer the behaviors continue, the harder it is to stop. SP Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two active boys. Christa’s latest book is Happy, Healthy & Hyperconnected: Raising a Thoughtful Communicator in a Digital World.

FUN STUFF { LIFE IS BETTER WHEN YOU’RE LAUGHING }

WHY DID THE FARMER RUN A STEAMROLLER OVER HIS POTATO FIELD ON THANKSGIVING DAY?

WHAT DID THE TURKEY SAY TO THE COMPUTER?

He wanted to raise mashed potatoes.

google, google, google.

Make Thanksgiving

Super Fun

for everyone

H LOL WITH JAMES ESTES!

ey, this year find ways to make Thanksgiving Holiday super fun for everyone. This is your chance to bring a little childlike fun home for the holidays. It’s true that a bit of effort and a willingness to be silly can create a happy gathering of family and friends. Play!

Name that Bird & Share its Story: Tom is not allowed! Have a small group (kids & adults) come up with a few names on a piece of paper (include middle names too) and invite guests to put a tally mark on their vote. Then throughout the day refer to the bird by his/her given name. Go further and give the bird a story – share anecdotes about your turkey’s life; create a worthy legend that ensures “Magnus T. Wrigglefeather” was not sacrificed in vain. Story telling is a great way to spend time with adults and children. Dress up: Go ahead and get yourself a pair of turkey socks or dig around and find autumn-colored clothes. Maybe pick up a turkey hat or be “that” uncle and rent a pilgrim costume! Memories have to be made, and funny memories last for years to come.

Cook together: Seize the opportunity to build relationships by cooking together. Some of the best conversations and memories are made while stirring gravy and mashing potatoes. Make sure to let the kids help too, or let them eat pie before dinner! If hosting, please try not to worry about perfection. This holiday is about family and thankfulness.

WHOLESOME ENDING { MANAGING A COLD }

A little cold advice COUGHING AND SNIFFLES GOT YOU DOWN? Try a Mediterranean favorite like minestrone soup with a side of garlic bread. The antioxidant rich vegetables and the sulfur compounds from the garlic are powerful anti-inflammatories and immunity boosters

ABOUT THAT HOT BATH Grab a book or your favorite relaxing playlist and soak in the tub for 30-45 minutes each day. This could reduce your sick days. That’s right, a good soak flushes toxins from the skin which reduces inflammation and can start the healing process sooner; and it also allows for a good sinus flush to reduce congestion.

GET THOSE ZZZ’S A good night’s sleep can give you a great immunity boost from the production of antibodies. These large protein molecules will latch on to invading germs and take them down. You may want to wear an eye mask so no light can reduce your melatonin production.

HEALING FOOT MASSAGE A good foot massage can increase your white blood cells by 25%. So rub your feet (or our scalp) for 10 minutes. This daily rub

CUDDLE IN COMFORT Get out those flannel PJ’s or fuzzy socks. When your skin is toasty the blood vessels in your nose dilate, which allows immune cells to find and destroy invading viruses.
