Equine Diseases Contained on Smith County Premises AUSTIN – Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) confirmed Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) in nine racing Quarter Horses located on a Smith County premises on January 31, 2019. Through subsequent testing, seven of the EIA positive horses and one additional horse on the property were confirmed positive for a secondary infectious disease, Equine Piroplasmosis (EP).
considered endemic in Texas or the U.S.; however, isolated outbreaks of the disease have occurred. Like EIA, EP can also be spread directly between animals by transfusions and blood-contaminated instruments such as needles. Cases of EP can be mild or acute.
Symptoms of acutely affected equine include fever, anemia, jaundiced mucous membranes, swollen abdomens, and labored breathing. For more information on EP please visit: https://www.tahc.texas.gov/ news/brochures/TAHCBrochure_Piroplasmosis.pdf For information on biosecurity measures you can take to keep horses healthy, visit:
www.tahc.texas.gov/news/ brochures/TAHCBrochure_BiosecurityEquine.pdf Further updates on EIA cases will be posted on the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) website: www.equinediseasecc.org/ alerts/outbreaks
The Smith County premises remains in compliance with TAHC rules which require owners to maintain EIA and EP exposed horses in a quarantine zone of no less than 200 yards from unexposed equine and retest exposed animals until cleared. Permanent quarantine and treatment are available options for EP positive horses while EIA positive cases must remain quarantined for the life of the animal. EIA is an incurable, infectious viral disease spread through blood-to-blood contact, not through close proximity or casual contact. The virus can be transmitted from an infected equine to a “clean” equine by biting flies, the use of unsterilized or contaminated medical instruments, or through a blood transfusion. The most common clinical sign of acute EIA is fever, which often precedes the development of other signs. In chronic cases, symptoms such as weight loss, weakness, anemia and swelling of the lower legs, chest and abdomen may occur. For more information on EIA please visit: www.tahc.texas. gov/news/brochures/TAHCBrochure_EIA.pdf EP is a blood-borne protozoal disease that affects horses, donkeys, mules and zebras. Big Al’s View Of The World
They say the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. I pulled the same thing on my wife when we started dating. On our first date I was so scared I couldn’t even eat my meal so on our second date I decided I would cook for her. I made the salad full blown fancy. I had the cucumbers and the tomatoes all circled around the edge. It was almost too pretty to eat. It must have worked. She still has me around after 26 years. I’m thinking the same thing could be said for rodeo contestants. The fastest way to their heart is through their draw. Give them a good draw and you’ve got them hooked. Give them a bad draw and well you might be going back on Tinder looking for a date. It still surprises me that people have not figured this out. It’s not that hard. Good stock equals a great time for all. Just like serving a man chicken fried steak on your first date. Give him chicken McNuggets and you too could be looking for another dance partner this weekend. It’s not just the good stock that is needed. It’s the fact that you have to use the good stock correctly. We just got back from a rodeo that

had really good calves. Probably better than what we see at most rodeos. Despite the fact that the calves were good they decided to pen them up on the left side of the arena. Not a return alley, but by horse. Guess which way a lot of those nice calves decided to run when it was time to compete? It didn’t take a rocket science degree to figure that out did it? I was at a rodeo one summer that this happened at. By the end of the rodeo you couldn’t get a calf to run down the arena if you’d had a sack of feed. The next year I mentioned this to the guy doing the rodeo. We ended up taking the back off of the calf box and running the calves through a small opening in the chute. It was a little bit of trouble to do this each time but we never had a single calf duck back to the left. It’s not rocket science. It’s just common sense!!! Work smarter, not harder they say. I’ve seen rodeos with barriers either too long or too short for the cattle they had. You can ruin a really nice set of cattle pretty fast with the wrong set up (either way). I would rather go to a knife fight roping and not be fast enough than to go somewhere and draw

a runner on a barrier that is too long for the cattle. Not only that, but now that calf or steer is always going to try and outrun everyone. There are a lot of things that you have to think about when you get to a rodeo. Keeping your cattle great should be number 1. This can go for the rough stock also. Why do some rodeos get two bull riders per perf when others get twenty something? Remember the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Give him something he can ride and they’ll be lining up. No one wants to be beat by their draw. Guys want to ride a bull. Give them a spinner and they’ll be there. Everyone wants to show off for the girlfriend. The girlfriend doesn’t know that was a spinner. She’s just happy because you finally rode one. Regardless of what the setup is (barrier, cattle, quality of bulls) mostly the same guys are going to win. If you prepare better than everyone else you should excel in all conditions. Most of the field is just happy to be there competing alongside you. Keep them happy and they’ll keep coming back which in turn keeps the money flowing in both directions. By both directions I mean they keep entering and you keep winning. The contractor is making a little money, the winners are making a little money and the contestants on a whole are happy. Keep in mind that 75% of us do this as a hobby. When it’s not fun anymore they’ll start fishing or something else.
Trying to make rodeo great again, Big Al’

Hillman Wins $5,000 Jerry Ann Taylor Award at World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® by Johna Cravens for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 9, 2018) The judges for the annual Jerry Ann Taylor BestDressed Cowgirl Award at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo had a tough decision to make as several of the top 12 barrel racers expended extra effort in their arena presentation. The award includes a $5,000 cash prize along with permanent recognition on a plaque at the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame which co-sponsors the award with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.
four other winners with their finals’ outfits reached out to Hillman early last week about helping her. Dickson and her TruColors custom clothing line offered to provide an outfit for Simpson. “I’m glad Kendra called me,” Hillman said. “I’m normally kind of low-key,” she said, “but it was for a good cause, so I decided why not. But I didn’t want an outfit that was crazy, over-the-top.” Hillman said, “I knew they gave the award at Fort Worth every year, but I didn’t know a lot about it. Kendra filled me in on the background. That’s a really cool award.” Hillman and Dickson got together on Friday to plan her

FWSSR photo by James Phifer Stevi Hillman from Weatherford, Texas, a threetime National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier, was named the winner. Hillman, who earned a degree in radiology from Weatherford College and has worked as an x-ray technician, came into the finals in fifth place. I had several outfits for her to look at, but we both decided the red would really pop on her palomino horse.” “She handed me her jeans and shirt and I went to work,” Dickson said. She had taken her sewing machine with her and spent much of the day at Belton in her trailer working on the outfit.

“It was snowing and sleeting, and I spent some of the time in the back of the trailer with a manger door that would not close, using butcher paper and spray adhesive,” Dickson said. “If people only knew what goes on behind the scenes,“ she added with a laugh. The two cowgirls agreed to share the prize money if Hillman won the award, with Dickson’s share going to her Rodeo For A Reason charity that raises money for childhood cancer. Hillman will donate to Rockin’ W Rodeo Ministry, whose founders Ted and Linda Weise provide food and fellowship at rodeos across the country through their Cowboy Bistro. Hillman said she had fun and while she’ll likely donate the breast collar and horse boots to a good cause, she plans to keep the outfit. “When I make the NFR again, I’ll wear the red on Canada night,” she said, a nod to her friend from Canada who owns Sherlock. Dickson also helped two other finalists – Dona Kay Rule of Minco, Oklahoma, and Tiany Schuster of Krum, Texas – with their outfits.
“I was very happy that more women participated this year,” Dickson said. “I strongly believe this is not only an opportunity to pay tribute to Jerry Ann Taylor who did so much for all of us, but a chance to add to the audience’s enjoyment.” The Jerry Ann Taylor Award is only given at the National Finals Rodeo and at the finals of the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo in Fort Worth. Taylor, a 1986 National Cowgirl Hall of Fame honoree, was a flamboyant trick rider and roper who was known for her sense of style. Pam Minick of Fort Worth, a National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame board member and honoree and former WPRA vice president, said the award is to encourage women in professional rodeo to carry on the tradition of wearing colorful western attire in the rodeo arena. Barrel racing has a long history with the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo®. The Fort Worth rodeo began holding an invitational ranch girls barrel race in 1955, not long after barrel racing competition started.

It was the first time since 2012 a freshman had won the all-around title and she continued that momentum throughout the year to qualify for her first Cinch United Finals Rodeo in Sulphur Springs, Texas. “I went to the minimum amount of rodeos I could in the barrels and a few extra in the breakaway,” Conner said. “I did compete in both barrels and breakaway all year.” Conner had an outstanding CUFR, winning the barrel racing average as well as the All-Around championship and the rookie barrel racing title. She won a little over $9,000 at a record breaking CUFR. According to a UPRA press release, the CUFR had $194,679 added and bonus monies and paid out $254,679 to contestants, breaking records in each of the nine events, and paid out over $5 million dollars during the 2018 rodeo season, also breaking the record for larg-

She also punched her ticket to Fort Worth by winning the Junior American barrel racing qualifier in Jackson, MS. She has learned to handle the pressure that comes with competing with the best. “I do get a little nervous, but I do not think I will ever not get nervous or anxious,” Conner said. “I try to tell myself to do the best I can, and leave the rest to God.” Conner has three more years of high school but already has her sights set on bigger and better things. “My goals this year are to make the CUFR in the breakaway and the barrels and win the barrel racing,” she said. “I plan to keep going to UPRA, LRCA and Facing Page: Kylie competes at the Katy, Texas CPRA/UPRA rodeo this past CPRA rodeos while high school rodeoing. It took some time to get with him, but we just clicked from the first time I sat on him,” Conner said. “My breakaway horse is a sorrel gelding and is 14 years old. He is about as solid as they come.” A good horse is crucial to rodeo success and so is putting in the hours it takes to become a winning all-around competitor. “I am in the arena every day. I rope two to three times a week from a horse, but I rope the dummy every day. I exercise my barrel horse every day and work him on the barrels once a week. On the weekends I go to rodeos,” Conner said. “I am homeschooled, so I do school in the mornings, and then go outside to practice the rest of the day. That is pretty much every day of the week.” Rodeo is not for the faint of heart and is filled with many ups and downs. “My favorite part

It also gives me the chance to see what the atmosphere will be like to pro rodeo.” Her favorite UPRA/CPRA rodeo is Katy, Texas held each February. She also has a support system behind her, helping her along the way. “My whole family has always been behind me since I started riding,” Conner said. “Also, coaches Talmadge Green in the barrels and Jade Conner in the breakaway.” The

PROFESSIONAL BULL RIDING AND RODEO COMBINE FOR WESTERN SPORTS BONANZA WEEKEND IN GREEN BAY
Coupled with PBR’s Elite Series, WCRA will hold its second Major of 2019, Titletown Stampede to be Televised on CBS Sports- AUSTIN, TEXAS and PUEBLO, COLO. — For the first time in the city of Green Bay, an unforgettable weekend of western sports action will combine the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) and World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA)
the championship round for one more bull and a chance at the event title. The Titletown Stampede will feature athletes from around the globe who have qualified to compete through the WCRA Virtual Rodeo Qualifier (VRQ), a web based app used to track rodeo athletes performances worldwide. The WCRA major rodeo events series will award top money to the top com-
in three days of on-the-dirt action. PBR’s elite series will debut at Resch Center for two days of epic rides and wrecks. Sandwiched between the PBR event, WCRA, a new marquee rodeo, will bring its own brand of western sports excitement to the popular bull-riding event. The WCRA Titletown Stampede – a One-Day $1 Million Major Rodeo – will be WCRA’s second major of 2019. “Following a great weekend in Chicago in January for the first million-dollar WCRA rodeo of the 2019 season, we’re thrilled to again pair WCRA with PBR for an exciting weekend of western sports,” said Sean Gleason, CEO, PBR. “In representing WCRA’s media rights we are thrilled to bring this marquee rodeo to network television on CBS Sports.” The top 35 bull riders in the world will take to the dirt for Round 1 on Friday, May 31 and then for Round 2 on Sunday, June 2. Each rider will face one bull each. Following Round 2 Sunday afternoon, the event’s Top 15 riders with the highest two-round cumulative scores will advance to
petitor in eight events — bareback riding, women’s breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding — each athlete competing for their piece of the $1 million purse. Athletes in each discipline — including both headers and heelers in the team-roping event — will compete for more than $111,000, with the champions walking away with $50,000 each. “We are truly excited about the opportunity to bring rodeo to another major U.S. market east of the Mississippi and network television,” said WCRA President, Bobby Mote. “Our partnership with PBR continues to expose the sport of rodeo to new demographics and will broaden the horizon of professional rodeo, which is exactly what we set out to do.” On Sunday, June 2 fans will be able to tune into the Titletown Stampede Showdown Round on a CBS network broadcast at 1:30-2:30 P.M. ET “WCRA’s media rights relationship with PBR is crucial to our mission to broaden exposure for rodeo through network television,” said Mote. “We are now one of only three rode-

os in North America (Calgary Stampede and Days of ‘47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo) to reach every American household through broadcast media coverage.” In early 2018, PBR and WCRA announced a collaboration to jointly produce, market, and promote rodeo events in an effort to expand television and digital coverage of the sport, build the profiles of the world’s best rodeo athletes, and grow the sport’s fan base. All WCRA events will be broadcast live on RidePass, the definitive source on western sports and lifestyle, which delivers fans the most entertaining, authentic, and accessible western sports experience in the world. Since launching in May of 2018, the WCRA and its partners have awarded more than $3,024,000 in new money to rodeo athletes. Q u a l i f y i n g for events will be based purely on performance and on series points, rather than dollars won, through a new world-ranking points system. The PBR action in
Green Bay starts at 7:45 p.m. CT on Friday, May 31 airing live on RidePass and concludes on Sunday, June 2 with a Live telecast on CBS Sports Network 4-6:30 p.m. EST. Tickets sales for the two-day PBR event as well as the Titletown Stampede on Saturday, June 1 starting at 7 p.m. will be announced sometime next month and start at $10. All tickets for the event can be purchased at Resch Arena Box Office or by calling Ticketmaster 1-800-745-3000 or going online at Ticketmaster. com. Combination tickets for the WCRA and PBR events will be available through PBR Rewards as well. This year both Premium and Elite Seats will be available for those fans wanting to be up close and personal with all the action on Friday and Saturday night. Elite Seats can be purchased for $350 and are available on Friday and Sundayonly while premium experience will be available all three nights.

“Guardrails” From Pastor Randy Weaver The definition of a guardrail is a system designed to keep vehicles from straying into dangerous or off-limit areas. No one has ever regretted establishing guardrails, but there are plenty of us who look back and probably wish that we had built guardrails sooner. No one pays attention to guardrails unless you need one; they are an invisible part of the driving experience. You generally find guardrails in one of three areas. On bridges, because on a bridge there’s a very small margin for error. You also find them in medians, to keep us from driving in areas where we’re very close to people moving in the opposite direction. The third area where you find guardrails, specifically, is around curves – unexpected changes in roadside conditions. If you think about it, the point of a guardrail isn’t to say, don’t drive on this particular piece of real estate. It is the piece of real estate just beyond the guardrail that’s a point of danger. So, generally speaking, guardrails are actually constructed in areas where theoretically you could possibly drive, but guardrails are there to keep us from moving into an area where there’s actual danger. I would like to encourage you to think through and develop a personal standard of behavior that becomes a matter of conscience that serves as a guardrail to you. I want you to begin thinking in terms of standards of behavior or behavioral practices that you are so committed to as an individual that when you violate them, it bothers your conscience and you would feel like you’ve actually done something wrong. That’s the guardrail. But these guardrails are just for you. So that when you begin to bump up against them, little warning lights will go off and something in you says danger. If you ignore the warning and continue to bump up against it, it may lead you into areas of trouble from which you might not be able to recover or which you might live the rest of your life with regret. It is a personal decision that informs or ignites your conscience that becomes a standard by which you live your life. In the fifth chapter of Ephesians, the apostle Paul is explaining how a person avoids the ditches on the left and the right, how a person avoids rolling his car off the side of a mountain, how a person stays in between the lines
and in between the guardrails. And in doing so, he explains this principle of the guardrail. Ephesians 5:15-17: “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” What Paul is saying is, as you live your life, be very careful how you walk. He says, because of the things that I’ve called you to do, because of the life that God wants you to lead, and because God wants to protect and direct you, then as
Cowboy Sports News Page 58 - March 2019
you live your life in every area of life, be careful. He’s saying because we live in a dangerous world morally, ethically, professionally, financially, marriage is less and less respected—whatever it might be—because we live in a dangerous time, he says you’ve got to be careful how you live or how you walk. He’s saying, look, I want you to be honest with yourself. You know what’s on the other side of this guardrail financially, morally and you know what could happen to your marriage. You know what can happen to your physical body if you don’t change some things. You don’t need new information. I want you to stop and I want you to face up to what you know God’s will for your life is—God’s will for your body, God’s will for your marriage, God’s will for
these different areas of your life. I want you to quit deceiving yourself and face up to what you know God’s will is. You will never regret have Godly guardrails in your life. They will keep you safe from the areas of life that you need to avoid or that can harm you. Let God guide as you build these guardrails in your life.
